Fabrication of cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsions with high antibacterial activities via microfluidization

The high volatility and hydrophobicity of cinnamon essential oils (CiEO) limited their practical application. To enhance their stability and antibacterial activity, nanoemulsions encapsulating CiEO were prepared using hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/lauroyl arginate (HPCD/LAE) inclusion complexes through high-pressure microfluidization (HPM). Effects of HPM parameters on the stability and antibacterial properties of nanoemulsion were investigated. Results revealed that increased processing pressure and cycle numbers were associated with reduced droplet size and greater homogeneity in CiEO distribution. Storage and thermal stability were optimized at 100 MPa and seven cycles. Moreover, the nanoemulsions showed strong synergistic antibacterial against E. coli (19.79 mm) and S. aureus (23.61 mm) compared with LAE (11.52 mm and 12.82 mm, respectively) and CiEO alone (13.26 mm and 17.68 mm, respectively). This study provided new information for constructing CiEO nanoemulsion, which is suitable for use in the food industry.

Enhanced stability of encapsulated lemongrass essential oil in chitosan-gelatin and pectin-gelatin biopolymer matrices containing ZnO nanoparticles

The use of essential oils is widespread in various fields such as pharmacy, pest control, and active packaging. However, their instability and short-term effects require methods to enhance their durability and effectiveness. Encapsulation in biopolymer matrices appears to be a promising approach due to the environmental safety and cost-effectiveness of such formulations. In this study, different oil-in-water emulsions were prepared by mixing chitosan-gelatin (C-G) or pectin-gelatin (P-G) solutions with lemongrass essential oil (LG). ZnO NPs were used as an additional active component. Encapsulation in biopolymer matrices resulted in stable emulsions with a significantly slower release of LG, and ZnO NPs further suppressed LG release, particularly in the P-G emulsion. They also contributed to the stability of the emulsions and a decrease in the average droplet size of LG. Furthermore, the presence of LG and ZnO NPs improved the smoothness of the films prepared from the emulsions and dispersions using the casting technique. SEM/EDS analysis confirmed the homogeneous distribution of ZnO NPs in both C-G and P-G films. By adjusting the type and content of the biopolymers and NPs, such emulsions could be effectively utilized in various applications where controlled release of active components is required.

Replacement of milk fat by rapeseed oil stabilised emulsion in commercial yogurt

The incorporation of lipid droplets and further characterization of matrices within dairy products may be possible using such adjacent particles as protein complexes/lipids. Among the range of varied emulsions and their functionalities, great attention has recently focused on the fabrication of high internal phase types. Feasibly, stable alternatives structured with health-beneficial lipids like those derived from plants could replace saturated fatty acids. As a fat replacement strategy, the fate of incorporated HIPE would require some adjustments either with storage stability and/or structural feat for the food matrix. Therefore, the replacement of milk fat by rapeseed oil stabilised emulsion in commercial yogurt was investigated. This involved 25%, 50% and 75% rapeseed oil respectively assigned as low (LIPE), medium (MIPE), and high internal phase emulsion (HIPE). Specifically, emulsions were examined by droplet size, encapsulation, pH, zeta potential, phase separation, and rheology. The fat free yogurt supplemented by HIPE were examined by droplet size, zeta potential, pH, color, sensory, texture and microbiological aspects against positive (regular milk fat) and negative (fat free) yogurt controls. Results showed increasing rapeseed oil contents would form smaller droplet-like emulsions. Within the yogurt matrix however, incorporating HIPE would seemingly reduce oil droplet size without much compromise to bacterial viability, sensory, or texture. Overall, this simple method of lipid alternation shows promise in dairy products.

Recent insights into Nanoemulsions: Their preparation, properties and applications

The ever-increasing demand for healthy diet by consumers has prompted the research adopting cutting-edge methods that can maintain the quality of fruits and vegetables without the use of preservatives. Emulsion based coating approach has been regarded as a viable way to extend the shelf life of fresh produce. New opportunities are being created in a number of industries, (medicines, cosmetics and food) because of new advancements in the developing field of nanoemulsions. Nanoemulsion based methods are efficient for encapsulating the active ingredients including antioxidants, lipids, vitamins and antimicrobial agents owing to the small droplet size, stability and improved biological activity. This review provides an overview of recent developments in preserving the quality and safety of fresh-cut fruits & vegetables with nanoemulsion as a carrier of functional compounds (antimicrobial agents, antibrowning/antioxidants and texture enhancers). In addition, material and methods used for fabrication of the nanoemulsion is also described in this review. Food grade nanoemulsions: promising delivery systems for functional ingredients

Nano-emulsions are receiving great attention in various industries, especially in the food sector. Peculiar properties of nano-sized droplets and high surface area are most suited for the development and delivery of functional ingredients. Nano-emulsions systems are suitable for encapsulation, protection, improving bioavailability, and target release of sensitive functional compounds. Nano-emulsions have promising potential for the delivery of nutraceuticals, probiotics, flavors, and colors. Nano-emulsions with active ingredients (antimicrobials) have a key part in ensuring food safety, nutrition, and quality of food. Nanoemulsions can also be used for biodegradable coating, packaging, antimicrobial coating, and quality and shelf life enhancement of different foods. The current review includes an overview of nanotechnology nano-emulsions, materials, techniques for formulation & production of nano-emulsions for food and nutrition. Furthermore, the analytical approaches used for the characterization of nano-emulsions and finally, the applications and limitations of nano-emulsions in the food industry are discussed in detail.

Preparation and Characterization of Aprepitant Solid Dispersion with HPMCAS-LF

This study focused on improving the physicochemical characteristics of aprepitant with poor water solubility by preparing solid dispersion (SD). To prepare the SD with HPMCAS-LF, the solvent evaporation method was applied. Based on dissolution analysis, the dissolution rate of SD increased by five times compared with aprepitant. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results suggested the presence of amorphous-form aprepitant inside SD. According to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, intermolecular hydrogen bonds were detected between polymer and aprepitant. The Caco-2 cell experiment proved that SD did not lower the transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) values but improved the permeation amount of aprepitant. Additionally, the SD of aprepitant displayed excellent stability.

Microfluidic preparation of a novel phoxim nanoemulsion pesticide against Spodoptera litura

With continuous development of pesticide dosage forms, emulsifiable concentrates using large amounts of organic solvents are gradually obsoleted. Nanoemulsions with high water content have been developed and the preparation processes also evolved, but these processes still exist some problems, such as poor controllability and high energy consumption. Microfluidic is a controllable nanoemulsion preparation system which mainly applied to pharmaceutical synthesis. In this study, the pesticide phoxim nanoemulsion was prepared by microfluidic technology. The optimized formulation of phoxim nanoemulsion was composed of Tween 80 and pesticide emulsifier 500 as surfactant, hexyl acetate as oil, and n-propanol as co-surfactant. Moreover, when the flow rates of water and oil in the microfluidic system were adjusted to 5 μL/min and 20 μL/min, phoxim nanoemulsion was obtained with a cloud point/boiling point of 109 °C, a particle size of 21.5 ± 0.8 nm and a potential value of - 18.7 ± 0.6 mV. Furthermore, the nanoemulsion had a rapid release effect in vitro which could be fitted by the Ritger-Peppas model. The feeding toxicity of the phoxim nanoemulsion was higher than that of commercial formulation while the contact killing effect was higher than that of the active ingredient. Therefore, pesticide dosage was reduced and the insecticidal effect was enhanced by using phoxim nanoemulsions. These results also confirm the potential of microfluidics as a green process to produce pesticide nanoemulsions.

Saponins as Natural Emulsifiers for Nanoemulsions

The awareness of sustainability approaches has focused attention on replacing synthetic emulsifiers with natural alternatives when formulating nanoemulsions. In this context, a comprehensive review of the different types of saponins being successfully used to form and stabilize nanoemulsions is presented, highlighting the most common natural sources and biosynthetic routes. Processes for their extraction and purification are also reviewed altogether with the recent advances for their characterization. Concerning the preparation of the nanoemulsions containing saponins, the focus has been initially given to screening methods, lipid phase used, and production procedures, but their characterization and delivery systems explored are also discussed. Most experimental outcomes showed that the saponins present high performance, but the challenges associated with the saponins' broader application, mainly the standardization for industrial use, are identified. Future perspectives report, among others, the emerging biotechnological processes and the use of byproducts in a circular economy context.

Features, applications, and sustainability of lipid nanoparticles in cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals are a branch of cosmetic products that forms a bridge between cosmetic and drug products. It is a fast-growing branch of the cosmetic industry, especially after the introduction of novel formulation and manufacturing techniques such as lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). These LNPs-based cosmeceutical products offer several advantages such as enhanced bioavailability of cosmeceutical active ingredients (CAIs), improved aesthetic appeal, and stability of the final products. However, the use of these LNPs may raise some concerns about possible side effects of these LNPs and potential hazards to the customer's health. Accordingly, an update that focuses on the use of this important branch of nanoparticles is necessary since most review papers are dealing with all types of nanocarriers in the same review with little focus on LNPs. Therefore, in the current review, a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of LNPs in this field was highlighted, to emphasize the LNPs-based cosmeceuticals on the market, as well as the potential risk posed by LNPs on exposure and recently introduced regulatory guidelines to address them. In addition, if these products can be a candidate as products that meet the sustainable development goals raised by the UN are discussed.

Recent exploration of nanoemulsions for drugs and cosmeceuticals delivery

BACKGROUND

Nanoemulsions (NEs) have been explored as nanocarriers for the delivery of many drugs and cosmeceuticals. The extraordinary expansion of using NEs is due to their capability to conquer the main challenges of conventional delivery systems such as short residence time with low patient acceptance, poor stability, low aqueous solubility, permeability, and hence bioavailability.

METHODS

This review recapitulated the most recent pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical applications of NEs as effective delivery nanocarriers. The outputs of our research studies and the literature review on the latest NEs applications were assessed to highlight the NEs components, preparations, applications, and the improved quality and elegance of the used product.

RESULTS

NEs are stable submicronic translucent dispersions with narrow droplet size distribution. They exhibited excellent ability to efficiently encapsulate therapeutics of diverse nature of drugs and cosmeceuticals. NE formulations showed superiority over conventional delivery approaches with overabundances of advantages through different routes of administration. This novel technology exhibited better aesthetic appeal, higher bioavailability, and a longer duration compared to the conventional delivery systems.

CONCLUSION

This novel technology holds promise for different therapeutics fields. However, the success of NEs use advocated the development of robust formulations, proper choice of equipment, ample process characterization, and assurance of their efficacy, stability, safety and cosmetic appeal.

TES Nanoemulsions: A Review of Thermophysical Properties and Their Impact on System Design

Thermal energy storage materials (TES) are considered promising for a large number of applications, including solar energy storage, waste heat recovery, and enhanced building thermal performance. Among these, nanoemulsions have received a huge amount of attention. Despite the many reviews published on nanoemulsions, an insufficient number concentrate on the particularities and requirements of the energy field. Therefore, we aim to provide a review of the measurement, theoretical computation and impact of the physical properties of nanoemulsions, with an integrated perspective on the design of thermal energy storage equipment. Properties such as density, which is integral to the calculation of the volume required for storage; viscosity, which is a decisive factor in pressure loss and for transport equipment power requirements; and thermal conductivity, which determines the heating/cooling rate of the system or the specific heat directly influencing the storage capacity, are thoroughly discussed. A comparative, critical approach to all these interconnected properties in pertinent characteristic groups, in close association with the practical use of TES systems, is included. This work aims to highlight unresolved issues from previous investigations as well as to provide a summary of the numerical simulation and/or application of advanced algorithms for the modeling, optimization, and streamlining of TES systems.

Encapsulation of volatile compounds in liquid media: Fragrances, flavors, and essential oils in commercial formulations

The first marketed example of the application of microcapsules dates back to 1957. Since then, microencapsulation techniques and knowledge have progressed in a plethora of technological fields, and efforts have been directed toward the design of progressively more efficient carriers. The protection of payloads from the exposure to unfavorable environments indeed grants enhanced efficacy, safety, and stability of encapsulated species while allowing for a fine tuning of their release profile and longer lasting beneficial effects. Perfumes or, more generally, active-loaded microcapsules are nowadays present in a very large number of consumer products. Commercial products currently make use of rigid, stable polymer-based microcapsules with excellent release properties. However, this type of microcapsules does not meet certain sustainability requirements such as biocompatibility and biodegradability: the leaking via wastewater contributes to the alarming phenomenon of microplastic pollution with about 4% of total microplastic in the environment. Therefore, there is a need to address new issues which have been emerging in relation to the poor environmental profile of such materials. The progresses in some of the main application fields of microencapsulation, such as household care, toiletries, cosmetics, food, and pesticides are reviewed herein. The main technologies employed in microcapsules production and the mechanisms underlying the release of actives are also discussed. Both the advantages and disadvantages of every technique have been considered to allow a careful choice of the most suitable technique for a specific target application and prepare the ground for novel ideas and approaches for encapsulation strategies that we expect to be proposed within the next years.

Shape-Controlled Nanoparticles from a Low-Energy Nanoemulsion

Nanoemulsion technology enables the production of uniform nanoparticles for a wide range of applications. However, existing nanoemulsion strategies are limited to the production of spherical nanoparticles. Here, we describe a low-energy nanoemulsion method to produce nanoparticles with various morphologies. By selecting a macro-RAFT agent (poly(di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate-co-N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide) (P(DEGMA-co-HPMA))) that dramatically lowers the interfacial tension between monomer droplets and water, we can easily produce nanoemulsions at room temperature by manual shaking for a few seconds. With the addition of a common ionic surfactant (SDS), these nanoscale droplets are robustly stabilized at both the formation and elevated temperatures. Upon polymerization, we produce well-defined block copolymers forming nanoparticles with a wide range of controlled morphologies, including spheres, worm balls, worms, and vesicles. Our nanoemulsion polymerization is robust and well-controlled even without stirring or external deoxygenation. This method significantly expands the toolbox and availability of nanoemulsions and their tailor-made polymeric nanomaterials.

Nanomaterial-based drug delivery systems as promising carriers for patients with COVID-19

Once the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak to be pandemic, massive efforts have been launched by researchers around the globe to combat this emerging infectious disease. Here we review the most recent data on the novel SARS-CoV-2 pathogen. We analyzed its etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, and current medications. After that, we summarized the promising drug delivery application of nanomaterial-based systems. Their preparation routes, unique advantages over the traditional drug delivery routes and their toxicity though risk analysis were also covered. We also discussed in detail the mechanism of action for one example of drug-loaded nanomaterial drug delivery systems (Avigan-contained nano-emulsions). This review provides insights about employing nanomaterial-based drug delivery systems for the treatment of COVID-19 to increase the bioavailability of current drugs, reducing their toxicity, and to increase their efficiency.

Development and optimization of drug-loaded nanoemulsion system by phase inversion temperature (PIT) method using Box-Behnken design

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the present investigation was to develop a stable and optimized drug-loaded nanoemulsion system using the phase inversion temperature (PIT) method.

SIGNIFICANCE

The PIT method has been widely used for the development of food-grade nanoemulsion systems. For the first time, a simple and cost-effective, PIT method was used for the development of a stable drug-loaded nanoemulsion system.

METHODS

Box-Behnken experimental design was used for the development of an optimized drug-loaded nanoemulsion system by the PIT method. The independent variables were optimized for responses by using the desirability function. The hydrophobic drug, benidipine was used as a modal drug. Optimized oil phase (blend of long-chain triglycerides oil, medium-chain triglycerides oil and essential oil) was used for the development of oil in water (O/W) nanoemulsion system.

RESULTS

Optimum nanoemulsion formulation was stable, transparent and contained 50% of oil to surfactant percentage with a droplet size of 96.57 ± 1.61 nm. The optimum formulation also showed higher in-vitro drug diffusion from dialysis membrane as compared to the marketed formulation. Nanoemulsion droplets were observed as spherical in the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. Box-Behnken statistical analysis revealed that all the independent variables had a significant impact on characteristics of nanoemulsion and the predicated value of independent variables was found to be valid.

CONCLUSION

It was concluded that the PIT method produces a stable and efficient drug-loaded nanoemulsion system. Further, the optimized oil phase can be used as an alternative to costly, commercial medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oils, for the development of a stable nanoemulsion system.

Comparing microfluidics and ultrasonication as formulation methods for developing hempseed oil nanoemulsions for oral delivery applications

Emerging formulation technologies aimed to produce nanoemulsions with improved characteristics, such as stability are attractive endeavors; however, comparisons between competing technologies are lacking. In this study, two formulation techniques that employed ultrasound and microfluidic approaches, respectively, were examined for relative capacity to produce serviceable oil in water nanoemulsions, based on hempseed oil (HSO). The ultrasound method reached > 99.5% entrapment efficiency with nanoemulsions that had an average droplet size (Z-Ave) < 180 nm and polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.15 ± 0.04. Surfactant concentration (% w/v) was found to be a significant factor (p < 0.05) controlling the Z-Ave, PDI and zeta potential of these nanoparticles. On the other hand, the microfluidic approach produced smaller particles compared to ultrasonication, with good stability observed during storage at room temperature. The Z-Ave of < 62.0 nm was achieved for microfluidic nanoemulsions by adjusting the aqueous : organic flow rate ratio and total flow rate at 4:1 and 12 mL/min, respectively. Further analyses including a morphology examination, a simulated gastrointestinal release behavior study, transepithelial transport evaluations and a toxicity test, using a Caco2-cell model, were performed to assess the functionality of the prepared formulations. The results of this study conclude that both approaches of ultrasound and microfluidics have the capability to prepare an HSO-nanoemulsion formulation, with acceptable characteristics and stability for oral delivery applications.

Fabrication of nanoparticles for bone regeneration: new insight into applications of nanoemulsion technology

Introducing synthetic bone substitutes into the clinic was a major breakthrough in the regenerative medicine of bone. Despite many advantages of currently available bone implant materials such as biocompatiblity and osteoconductivity, they still suffer from relatively poor bioactivity, osteoinductivity and osteointegration. These properties can be effectively enhanced by functionalization of implant materials with nanoparticles such as osteoinductive hydroxyapatite nanocrystals, resembling inorganic part of the bone, or bioactive polymer nanoparticles providing sustained delivery of pro-osteogenic agents directly at implantation site. One of the most widespread techniques for fabrication of nanoparticles for bone regeneration applications is nanoemulsification. It allows manufacturing of nanoscale particles (<100 nm) that are injectable, 3D-printable, offer high surface-area-to-volume-ratio and minimal mass transport limitations. Nanoparticles obtained by this technique are of particular interest for biomedical engineering due to fabrication procedures requiring low surfactant concentrations, which translates into reduced risk of surfactant-related in vivo adverse effects and improved biocompatibility of the product. This review discusses nanoemulsion technology and its current uses in manufacturing of nanoparticles for bone regeneration applications. In the first section, we introduce basic concepts of nanoemulsification including nanoemulsion formation, properties and preparation methods. In the next sections, we focus on applications of nanoemulsions in fabrication of nanoparticles used for delivery of drugs/biomolecules facilitating osteogenesis and functionalization of bone implants with special emphasis on biomimetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, synthetic polymer nanoparticles loaded with bioactive compounds and bone-targeting nanoparticles. We also highlight key challenges in formulation of nanoparticles via nanoemulsification and outline potential further improvements in this field.

Preparation of a stabilized aqueous polystyrene suspension via phase inversion

Polymer suspensions have found various applications in novel technologies. In this research, an aqueous suspension of polystyrene was prepared via the phase inversion method using sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as an anionic surfactant and two co-surfactants. The effects of co-surfactant ratio and salt concentration were investigated and the stability and characteristics of the prepared samples were identified. All samples possessed a zeta potential lower than −50 mV which reveals an electrostatic stability. The sample PS-1, containing the lower salt concentration of 1 × 10⁻³ M, was the most stable sample, while its stability decreases with increasing salt concentration. The sample PS-5 during the electrical conductivity measurement exhibited partial instability via agglomeration of polymer on the probe. Rheology measurements revealed that the suspension behavior varies between Newtonian and non-Newtonian. Eventually, PS-1 containing 4.00 g polystyrene, 1.70 g SLS and a co-surfactant ratio of 0.66, suspended within 150 mL of 0.003 M aqueous NaCl solution, exhibited proper stability.

The phase inversion emulsification method was used to prepare polystyrene aqueous suspensions. Final suspensions were characterized to determine the most stable suspension.

Integrating Nanotherapeutic Platforms to Image Guided Approaches for Management of Cancer

Cancer is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for 8.8 million deaths in 2015. The landscape of cancer therapeutics is rapidly advancing with development of new and sophisticated approaches to diagnostic testing. Treatment plan for early diagnosed patients include radiation therapy, tumor ablation, surgery, immunotherapy and chemotherapy. However the treatment can only be initiated when the cancer has been diagnosed thoroughly. Theranostics is a term that combines diagnostics with therapeutics. It embraces multiple techniques to arrive at comprehensive diagnosis, molecular images and an individualized treatment regimen. Recently, there is an effort to tangle the emerging approach with nanotechnologies, in an attempt to develop theranostic nanoplatforms and methodologies. Theranostic approach to management of cancer offers numerous advantages. They are designed to monitor cancer treatment in real time. A wide variety of theranostic nanoplatforms that are based on diverse nanostructures like magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, gold nanomaterials, polymeric nanoparticles and silica nanoparticles showed great potential as cancer theranostics. Nano therapeutic platforms have been successful in integrating image guidance with targeted approach to treat cancer.

Therapeutic Nanoemulsion: Concept to Delivery

Nanoemulsions (NEs) or nanometric-scaled emulsions are transparent or translucent, optically isotropic and kinetically stable heterogeneous system of two different immiscible liquids namely, water and oil stabilized with an amphiphilic surfactant having droplet size ranges up to 100 nm. They offer a variety of potential interests for certain applications: improved deep-rooted stability; excellent optical clarity; and, enhanced bioavailability due to its nanoscale of particles. Though there is still comparatively narrow insight apropos design, development, and optimization of NEs, which mainly stems from the fact that conventional characteristics of emulsion development and stabilization only partly apply to NEs. The contemporary article focuses on the nanoemulsion dosage form journey from concept to key application in drug delivery. In addition, industrial scalability of the nanoemulsion, as well as its presence in commercial and clinical practice, are also addressed.

Enhancement in brain uptake of vitamin D3 nanoemulsion for treatment of cerebral ischemia: formulation, gamma scintigraphy and efficacy study in transient middle cerebral artery occlusion rat models

AIM

For the treatment of cerebral ischaemia, vitamin-D₃ loaded nanoemulsions were developed.

METHOD

Tween 20 and polyethylene glycol were chosen as surfactant/co-surfactant, while oleic acid as the oil phase. The formulation was characterised for various in-vitro parameters. Targeting efficiency was investigated through radiometry, gamma scintigraphy and efficacy was studied in transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) rat model.

RESULT

Vitamin D₃-nanoemulsion showed a mean size range of 49.29 ± 10.28 nm with polydispersity index 0.17 ± 0.04 and zeta potential 13.77 mV. The formulation was found stable during thermodynamic stability study and permeated within 180 min through sheep nasal mucosa (permeation coefficient 7.873 ± 0.884 cm/h). Gamma scintigraphy and radiometry assay confirmed better percentage deposition (2.53 ± 0.17%) of ^99mTc-vitamin D₃-nanoemulsion through nasal route compared to IV administered ^99mTc-vitamin D₃ solution (0.79 ± 0.03%). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the ischaemic model confirmed better efficacy of vitamin D₃-nanoemulsion.

CONCLUSION

This work demonstrated better permeation, deposition, and efficacy of vitaminD₃-nanoemulsion through the intranasal route.

Ultrasmall Polymer Nanoparticles Formed by Instantaneous Nanosplitting of Surfactant-Free Emulsion

Application of polymer nanoparticles has progressively broadened. There is now increasing interest in smaller polymer nanoparticles for use in organic solar cells and drug delivery systems. Unfortunately, it is difficult to control the particle size below 50 nm with conventional synthesis methods. Our previously proposed "two-step nanoprecipitation method" overcomes this problem. An oil-in-water emulsion is first formed from polymer solution and deionized water without using surfactant; it is then injected into ethanol to form particles. The particle formation mechanism in this method has now been investigated, and an interesting phenomenon was discovered: the injected droplets instantaneously split into nanosize droplets with a size of 100-150 nm. The splitting was very effective, and the formed nanosize droplets were virtually monodisperse. This occurred only for a mixture composition in which the surface tension of the poor solvent mixture (water and ethanol) equaled that of the good solvent. This composition also resulted in formation of the smallest particles. By adjusting the conditions, we were able to synthesize extremely small nanoparticles (∼5 nm) of poly(3-hexylthiophene). This method has the potential to synthesize nanoparticles composed of other types of materials, such as nonconductive polymers and small molecules.

Formulation and Application of Nanoemulsions for Nutraceuticals and Phytochemicals

Recent trends in research and investigation on nanoemulsion based products is the result of many reasons such as food security as a global concern, increasing demand for highly efficient food and agricultural products and technological need for products with the ability of manipulation and optimization in their properties. Nanoemulsions are defined as emulsions made up of nano sized droplets dispersed in another immiscible liquid which exhibit properties distinguishing them from conventional emulsions and making them suitable for encapsulation, delivery and formulations of bioactive ingredients in different fields including drugs, food and agriculture. The objective of this paper is to present a general overview of nanoemulsions definition, their preparation methods, properties and applications in food and agricultural sectors. Due to physicochemical properties of the nanoemulsion composition, creating nanosized droplets requires high/low energy methods that can be supplied by special devices or techniques. An overview about the mechanisms of these methods is also presented in this paper which are commonly used to prepare nanoemulsions. Finally, some recent works about the application of nanoemulsions in food and agricultural sectors along with challenges and legislations restricting their applications is discussed in the last sections of the current study.

Formulation of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) essential oil nano-emulsion via phase inversion temperature method

Recent trends in preservation of processed foods involve the use of natural compounds, rather than chemically synthesized additives, to simultaneously confer antimicrobial properties and prevent fat oxidation. In this regard, black pepper essential oils, due to its diversity in biological activities, have been increasingly popular. The compounds are often used in relatively low amounts and in the form of nanoparticles to permit well blending into foods or uniform dispersion on the surface of fresh meat. The purpose of this study is to determine experimental parameters of a nano-emulsion formation process from black pepper essential oil via the phase inversion temperature (PIT) technique. The study results showed that the system achieved the optimal nano-emulsion under following condition: the ratio by weight of water: Tween-80: oil = 86:9.7:4.3, the stirring speed of nano-emulsions at 500 rpm for 45 min (heating at 75°C for 30 min and then rapidly cooling at 5°C for 15 min).

Formulation and Optimization of Nanoemulsions Using the Natural Surfactant Saponin from Quillaja Bark

Replacing synthetic surfactants by natural alternatives when formulating nanoemulsions has gained attention as a sustainable approach. In this context, nanoemulsions based on sweet almond oil and stabilized by saponin from Quillaja bark with glycerol as cosurfactant were prepared by the high-pressure homogenization method. The effects of oil/water (O/W) ratio, total surfactant amount, and saponin/glycerol ratio on their stability were analyzed. The formation and stabilization of the oil-in-water nanoemulsions were analyzed through the evaluation of stability over time, pH, zeta potential, and particle size distribution analysis. Moreover, a design of experiments was performed to assess the most suitable composition based on particle size and stability parameters. The prepared nanoemulsions are, in general, highly stable over time, showing zeta potential values lower than −40 mV, a slight acid behavior due to the character of the components, and particle size (in volume) in the range of 1.1 to 4.3 µm. Response surface methodology revealed that formulations using an O/W ratio of 10/90 and 1.5 wt% surfactant resulted in lower particle sizes and zeta potential, presenting higher stability. The use of glycerol did not positively affect the formulations, which reinforces the suitability of preparing highly stable nanoemulsions based on natural surfactants such as saponins.

Advances in controlled release pesticide formulations: Prospects to safer integrated pest management and sustainable agriculture

As the world is striving hard towards sustainable agricultural practices for a better tomorrow, one of the primary focuses is on effective pest management for enhanced crop productivity. Despite newer and potent chemicals as pesticides, there are still substantial crop losses, and if by any means this loss can be tackled; it will alleviate unwanted excessive use of chemical pesticides. Scientific surveys have already established that pesticides are not being utilized by the crops completely rather a significant amount remains unused due to various limiting factors such as leaching and bioconversion, etc., resulting in an adverse effect on human health and ecosystems. Concerted efforts from scientific diaspora toward newer and innovative strategies are already showing promise, and one such viable approach is controlled release systems (CRS) of pesticides. Moreover, to bring these smart formulations within the domain of current pesticide regulatory framework is still under debate. It is thus, paramount to discuss the pros and cons of this new technology vis-à-vis the conventional agrarian methods. This review deliberates on the developmental updates in this innovative field from the past decades and also appraises the challenges encumbered. Additionally, critical information and the foreseeable research gaps in this emerging area are highlighted.

Food-Grade Nanoemulsions: Preparation, Stability and Application in Encapsulation of Bioactive Compounds

Nanoemulsions have attracted significant attention in food fields and can increase the functionality of the bioactive compounds contained within them. In this paper, the preparation methods, including low-energy and high-energy methods, were first reviewed. Second, the physical and chemical destabilization mechanisms of nanoemulsions, such as gravitational separation (creaming or sedimentation), flocculation, coalescence, Ostwald ripening, lipid oxidation and so on, were reviewed. Then, the impact of different stabilizers, including emulsifiers, weighting agents, texture modifiers (thickening agents and gelling agents), ripening inhibitors, antioxidants and chelating agents, on the physicochemical stability of nanoemulsions were discussed. Finally, the applications of nanoemulsions for the delivery of functional ingredients, including bioactive lipids, essential oil, flavor compounds, vitamins, phenolic compounds and carotenoids, were summarized. This review can provide some reference for the selection of preparation methods and stabilizers that will improve performance in nanoemulsion-based products and expand their usage.

Nanotechnology is an innovative area of science that includes the design, characterization, production, and application of materials, devices and systems by controlling shape and size at the nanometer scale (1-100 nm). Nanotechnology incorporation in cosmetic formulation is considered as the hottest and emerging technology available. Cosmetic manufacturers use nanoscale size ingredients to provide better UV protection, deeper skin penetration, long-lasting effects, increased color, finish quality, and many more. Micellar nanoparticles is one of the latest field applied in cosmetic products that becoming trending and widely commercialized in local and international markets. The ability of nanoemulsion system to form small micellar nanoparticles size with high surface area allowing to effectiveness of bioactive component transport onto the skin. Oil in water nanoemulsion is playing a major role as effective formulation in cosmetics such as make-up remover, facial cleanser, anti-aging lotion, sun-screens, and other water-based cosmetic formulations. The objective of this review is to critically discuss the properties, advantageous, and mechanism of micellar nanoparticles formation in nanoemulsion system. Therefore, present article introduce and discuss the specific benefits of nanoemulsion system in forming micellar nanoparticles for cosmetic formulation which become major factors for further development of micellar-based cosmetic segments.

Nanoemulsions: Factory for Food, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics

Nanotechnology, particularly nanoemulsions (NEs), have gained increasing interest from researchers throughout the years. The small-sized droplet with a high surface area makes NEs important in many industries. In this review article, the components, properties, formation, and applications are summarized. The advantages and disadvantages are also described in this article. The formation of the nanosized emulsion can be divided into two types: high and low energy methods. In high energy methods, high-pressure homogenization, microfluidization, and ultrasonic emulsification are described thoroughly. Spontaneous emulsification, phase inversion temperature (PIT), phase inversion composition (PIC), and the less known D-phase emulsification (DPE) methods are emphasized in low energy methods. The applications of NEs are described in three main areas which are food, cosmetics, and drug delivery.

Nanoemulsion: A Review on Mechanisms for the Transdermal Delivery of Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Drugs

Nanoemulsions (NEs) are colloidal dispersions of two immiscible liquids, oil and water, in which one is dispersed in the other with the aid of a surfactant/co-surfactant mixture, either forming oil-in-water (o/w) or water-in-oil (w/o) nanodroplets systems, with droplets 20–200 nm in size. NEs are easy to prepare and upscale, and they show high variability in their components. They have proven to be very viable, non-invasive, and cost-effective nanocarriers for the enhanced transdermal delivery of a wide range of active compounds that tend to metabolize heavily or suffer from undesirable side effects when taken orally. In addition, the anti-microbial and anti-viral properties of NE components, leading to preservative-free formulations, make NE a very attractive approach for transdermal drug delivery. This review focuses on how NEs mechanistically deliver both lipophilic and hydrophilic drugs through skin layers to reach the blood stream, exerting the desired therapeutic effect. It highlights the mechanisms and strategies executed to effectively deliver drugs, both with o/w and w/o NE types, through the transdermal way. However, the mechanisms reported in the literature are highly diverse, to the extent that a definite mechanism is not conclusive.

Microencapsulation of cocoa liquor nanoemulsion with whey protein using spray drying to protection of volatile compounds and antioxidant capacity

The aim of this study was microencapsulated a nanoemulsion of cocoa liquor with whey protein by spray drying, and evaluate the effect of different inlet drying temperatures on the properties of microcapsules. The nanoemulsion showed a particle size of 202.13 nm, PdI of 0.424, and ζ-potential of -25.20 mV. The inlet drying temperature showed differences in physicochemical properties of microcapsules. Microcapsules presented good thermal stability and protection against the melting of cocoa liquor. Microcapsules obtained showed excellent yields of polyphenolic compounds (78-93%), and high retention of volatile compounds, especially of pyrazines. Greater microencapsulation yield of bioactive compounds and retention of volatile compounds was obtained at higher drying temperature (180 °C). Excellent stability of polyphenols content, antioxidant capacity, and volatile compounds of cocoa liquor were observed during storage of the microcapsules at different temperature conditions, indicating the feasibility of this powder for its incorporation into functional foods.

Development and Permeability Testing of Self-Emulsifying Atorvastatin Calcium Pellets and Tablets of Compressed Pellets

Self-emulsifying pellets (SEPs) of Atorvastatin Calcium (AtrCa) were developed and processed into tablets (SETs). Self-emulsifying drug delivery system (SEDDS) composed of oleic acid, Tween 20, Span 80 and N-Methyl-2-pyrolidone gave great solubility improvement and was used as oil in water emulsion for the preparation of SEPs. Due to the high 60% w/w SEDDS content required to achieve a therapeutic dose in the final tablet form, sonication was necessary to improve fluidity and stability. Colloidal silicon dioxide (CSD) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) were the solids in the pellet formulation employed at a ratio 7:3, which enabled production of pellets with high SEDDS content and acceptable friability as well. Emulsions were characterized physico-chemically, SEPs for physical properties and reconstitution, and tablets of compressed pellets for mechanical strength, disintegration into pellets and drug release. SEPs compressed with 30% MCC at 60 MPa gave tablets of adequate strength that disintegrated rapidly into pellets within 1 min. Emulsion reconstitution took longer than drug release due to adsorption of SEDDS on CSD, implying dissolution at the pellet surface in parallel to that from the dispersed droplets. Compared to the commercial tablet, drug release from the self-emulsifying forms was faster at pH 1.2 where the drug solubility is poor, but slower at pH 6.8 where the solubility is higher. Permeability and cytotoxicity were also studied using Caco-2 cells. The results showed that drug transport from the apical to basolateral compartment of the test well was 1.27 times greater for SEPs than commercial tablets, but 0.86 times lower in the opposite direction. Statistical analysis confirmed the significance of these results. Toxicity was slightly reduced. Therefore, the increased permeability in conjunction with the protection of the drug being dissolved in the SEDDS droplets, may reduce the overall effect of presystemic metabolism and enhance bioavailability.

Ultrasonic nano-emulsification - A review

The emulsions with nano-sized dispersed phase is called nanoemulsions having a wide variety of applications ranging from food, dairy, pharmaceutics to paint and oil industries. As one of the high energy consumer methods, ultrasonic emulsification (UE) are being utilized in many processes providing unique benefits and advantages. In the present review, ultrasonic nano-emulsification is critically reviewed and assessed by focusing on the main parameters such pre-emulsion processes, multi-frequency or multi-step irradiations and also surfactant-free parameters. Furthermore, categorizing aposematic data of experimental researches such as frequency, irradiation power and time, oil phase and surfactant concentration and also droplet size and stability duration are analyzed and conceded in tables being beneficial to indicate uncovered fields. It is believed that the UE with optimized parameters and stimulated conditions is a developing method with various advantages.

Recent Advances in Formulation Strategies for Efficient Delivery of Vitamin D

Deficiency of vitamin D is a global concern affecting a huge number of human populations. This deficiency has a serious impact on human health not only affecting bone mineral density but also becoming the reason for cardiovascular disorders, infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases and cancers. Exposure to sunlight is the major source of vitamin D, but due to the present day-to-day lifestyle of working in a shade arouses the need for exogenous sources of vitamin D. Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) are the two major forms of vitamin D, which are hydrophobic in nature and highly susceptible to environmental conditions, like temperature and light. Therefore, novel drug delivery systems could be explored for efficient delivery of vitamin D. In this review, a brief account of vitamin D is provided followed by a detailed description of recent advances in various delivery systems, including solid lipid nanoparticles, nanoemulsion, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems, polymeric nanoparticles and solid dispersion, for the efficient delivery of vitamin D.
