Abstract
Bioactive compounds (BACs) have attracted much attention due to their potential health benefits. However, such substances have problems such as difficulty dissolving in water, poor stability, and low intestinal absorption, leading to serious limitations in practical applications. Nowadays, food colloidal delivery carriers have become a highly promising solution due to their safety, controllability, and efficiency. The use of natural macromolecules to construct delivery carriers can not only regulate the solubility, stability, and intestinal absorption of BACs but also effectively enhance the nutritional added value of functional foods, improve sensory properties, and extend shelf life. Moreover, smart-responsive colloidal delivery carriers can control the release characteristics of BACs, thus improving their absorption rate in the human body. This review describes the characteristics of several typical food colloid delivery carriers, focuses on their physical properties from static structure to dynamic release, summarizes their applications in delivery systems, and provides an outlook on the future development of food colloid delivery carriers. The different compositions and structures of food colloids tend to affect their stability and release behaviors, and the different surface properties and rheological characteristics of the carriers predestine their different application scenarios. The control of in vivo release properties and the effect on food media should be emphasized in the future exploration of safer and more controllable carrier systems.

Abstract
With styrene and acrylonitrile in ABS plastic toys as examples, this paper introduces to the development of a systematic strategy for studying the chemical migration risk in toys. The approach, included the detection method, establishment of migration model, model verification, and the practical application of the model in risk assessment. First, simple and sensitive methods for detecting analyte residues and migration were developed by headspace GC-MS. Then, the migration models were established based on the migration data from 5 min to 168 h and verified using 11 ABS samples. The results showed that the predicted values of the models and the experimental values had a good fit (RMSE=0.10-8.72 %). Subsequently, the migration of analytes in 94 ABS toys was predicted with these models at specific migration times. The daily average exposure level to styrene and acrylonitrile were estimated for children (3 months to 3 years). At last, the migration models reasonably predicted that the cancer risk of styrene and acrylonitrile in ABS toys were 1.6 × 10-8-1.4 × 10-6 and 3.1 × 10-8-1.6 × 10-6, respectively. This research contributes to promote toy safety and child health by enriching migration models and risk assessments.

Abstract
When equilibrium of leaching is reached within a product's duty cycle, partition coefficients polymer/solution dictate the maximum accumulation of a leachable and thus, patient exposure by leachables. Yet, in the pharmaceutical and food industry, exposure estimates based on predictive modeling typically rely on coarse estimations of the partition coefficient, with accurate and robust models lacking. This first part of the study aimed to explore linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs) as high performing models for the prediction of partition coefficients polymer/water. For this, partition coefficients between low density polyethylene (LDPE) and aqueous buffers for 159 compounds spanning a wide range of chemical diversity, molecular weight, vapor pressure, aqueous solubility and polarity (hydrophobicity) were determined and complimentary data collected from the literature (n=159, MW: 32 to 722, logKi,O/W: -0.72 to 8.61 and logKi,LDPE/W: -3.35 up to 8.36). The chemical space represented by this compounds set is considered indicative for the universe of compounds potentially leaching from plastics. Based on the dataset for the LDPE material purified by solvent extraction, a LSER model for partitioning between LDPE and water was calibrated to give:logKi,LDPE/W=-0.529+1.098Ei-1.557Si-2.991Ai-4.617Bi+3.886Vi. The model was proven accurate and precise (n = 156, R2 = 0.991, RMSE = 0.264). Further, it was demonstrated superior over a log-linear model fitted to the same data. Nonetheless, it could be shown that log-linear correlations against logKi,O/W can be of value for the estimation of partition coefficients for nonpolar compounds exhibiting low hydrogen-bonding donor and/or acceptor propensity. For these nonpolar compounds, the log - linear model was found to be: logKi,LDPE/W=1.18logKi,O/W-1.33 (n = 115, R2=0.985, RMSE = 0.313). In contrast, with mono-/bipolar compounds included into the regression data set, an only weak correlation was observed (n = 156, R2 = 0.930, RMSE = 0.742) rendering the log-linear model of more limited value for polar compounds. Notably, sorption of polar compounds into native (non-purified) LDPE was found to be up to 0.3 log units lower than into purified LDPE. To identify maximum (i. e. worst-case) levels of leaching in support of chemical safety risk assessments on systems attaining equilibrium before end of shelf-life, it appears adequate to utilize LSER - calculated partition coefficients (in combination with solubility data) by ignoring any kinetical information.

Abstract
Food contact materials (FCMs) can transfer chemicals arising from their manufacture to food before consumption. Regulatory frameworks ensure consumer safety by prescribing methods for the assessment of FCMs that rely on migration testing either into real-life foods or food simulants. Standard migration testing conditions for single-use FCMs are justifiably conservative, employing recognized worst-case contact times and temperatures. For repeated-use FCMs, the third of three consecutive tests using worst-case conditions is taken as a surrogate of the much shorter contact period that often occurs over the service life of these items. Food contact regulations allow for the use of migration modelling for the chemicals in the FCM and for the partitioning that occurs between the FCM and food/simulant during prolonged contact, under which steady-state conditions are favored. This study demonstrates that the steady-state is rarely reached under repeated-use conditions and that partitioning plays a minor role that results in migration essentially being diffusion controlled. Domains of use have been identified within which partitioning does not play a significant role, allowing modelling based upon diffusion parameters to be used. These findings have the potential to advance the modelling of migration from repeated-use articles for the benefit of regulatory guidance and compliance practices.

Abstract
Food packaging is designed to protect foods, to provide required information about the food, and to make food handling convenient for distribution to consumers. Packaging has a crucial role in the process of food quality, safety, and shelf-life extension. Possible interactions between food and packaging are important in what is concerning food quality and safety. This review tries to offer a picture of the most important types of active packaging emphasizing the controlled/target release antimicrobial and/or antioxidant packaging including system design, different methods of polymer matrix modification, and processing. The testing methods for the appreciation of the performance of active food packaging, as well as mechanisms and kinetics implied in active compounds release, are summarized. During the last years, many fast advancements in packaging technology appeared, including intelligent or smart packaging (IOSP), (i.e., time-temperature indicators (TTIs), gas indicators, radiofrequency identification (RFID), and others). Legislation is also discussed.

Abstract
Several food contact articles (FCAs) contaminated with unapproved brominated flame retardants (BFRs) purchased in the US market were analysed and subjected to migration tests. Migration tests were performed in food simulants (water, 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol and 50% ethanol) and food (milk, coffee and chicken bouillon soup) to evaluate the BFRs mass transfer from the contaminated FCA. The BFRs studied, 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP), 3,3',5,5'-tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and 1,2,5,6,9,10-hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) were analysed by UHPLC-MS/MS. The method validation parameters were r2 ≥ 0.999, LOD ≤ 0.3 ng mL-1, and RSD ≤ 1.7 % (n = 7). HBCD was not stable under our migration conditions and was not detected in any FCA, food or food simulant, including positive controls. Phenolic BFRs (TBP and TBBPA) migrated at concentrations ranging from non-detected to 73 µg kg-1 in food simulants, and from 1 to 23 µg kg-1 in food. Phenolic BFRs migrated into 50% ethanol food simulant at higher concentrations than in more aqueous food simulants and foods.

Abstract
Nowadays, food packaging is a crucial tool for preserving food quality and has become an inseparable part of our daily life. Strong consumer demand and market trends enforce more advanced and creative forms of food packaging. New packaging development requires safety evaluations that always implicate the application of complex analytical methods. The present work reviews the development and application of new analytical methods for detection of possible food contaminants from the packaging origin on the quality and safety of fresh food. Among food contaminants migrants, set-off migrants from printing inks, polymer degradation products, and aromatic volatile compounds can be found that may compromise the safety and organoleptic properties of food. The list of possible chemical migrants is very wide and includes antioxidants, antimicrobials, intentionally added substances (IAS), non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), monomers, oligomers, and nanoparticles. All this information collected prior to the analysis will influence the type of analyzing samples and molecules (analytes) and therefore the selection of a convenient analytical method. Different analytical strategies will be discussed, including techniques for direct polymer analysis.

Abstract
Twelve different brands of mineral water were collected from the Algerian market and analyzed to determine the initial antimony (Sb) content in both the PET package and mineral water. Experiments were conducted under different time conditions: 1, 10, to 365 days, different temperatures: 6, 25, and 40 °C, and different bottles sizes: 0.33 L and 1.5 L. The Sb in mineral water bottles varies between 0.50 and 1.12 μg/L for 0.33 L bottles, and 0.37 to 0.77 μg/L for 1.5 L ones. All of these values remain below the limit set by the European Union of 5 μg/L in drinking water. The diffusion coefficient of Sb in PET has been experimentally determined at 6, 25, and 40 °C, after the content of Sb in 1.5 L PET bottles had been determined. In the second part of the study, a factorial design 23 enabled a model the migration of antimony (Sb) in the bottled solutions and highlighted the influencing effects, such as temperature (°C), time (h), and thickness (mm) for two different time domains encompassing the entire validity period of the product. A simple polynomial function based on a single parameter has been determined with a precision indicator R2 = 0.98. This model has the advantage of being simple and fast. The Chronic Daily Intake (CDI) of Sb has been calculated, for adults. It does not exceed the Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulated CDI value of 400 ng/kg/day. The CDI values for children increase as the weight of the children decreases. The passage from the maximum child weight to the minimum value in the study increases the CDI of 77%.

Abstract
This study investigated how the properties of a polymeric can coating film, such as thickness and crosslink density as well as the type of migrant, influence the migration kinetics of model migrants in an attempt to better understand, model and control the migration process. Four model migrants were used BADGE (bisphenol A diglycidyl ether), BADGE·H2O, cyclo-diBADGE and Uvitex OB, that differ in size and polarity. Fatty and aqueous food simulants were used at high temperatures (70-130°C). The apparent diffusion coefficients were found to decrease with increasing crosslink density, while they increased with increasing film thickness. The apparent activation energy of BADGE and BADGE-related compounds was calculated from the diffusion data and were high, in the range of 250-264kJmol-1. The polarity of the simulant and the polarity of the migrant were found to influence migration. The results can be used to improve existing migration models, and thereby help to reduce migration from packaging into food by using safety-by-design approaches in new product development.

Abstract
AbstractNano-titanium dioxide and nano-silver combined with polystyrene granules to form a nano-composite film. Migration assess were performed by using food simulants 3% acetic acid (indicative acidic food) and 95% ethanol (indicative fatty food) at 40°C on different times of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 days. It was found that nanoparticle migration rate in acidic food was higher than fatty food. Diffusion coefficients of nanoparticles into simulants were estimated by inverse simulation of the migration process using finite-element method and experimental data of varied concentration. Simulation revealed an acceptable consistency between experimental data and predicted values. The numerical results indicated that the greatest diffusion coefficient was obtained by nano-titanium (2.8E-10 to 4.1E-9 m2s−1) in the 3% acetic acid. Results of concentration distribution confirmed a higher release rate and more uniformed distribution of nanoparticles for nano-titanium in the 3% acetic acid. It also found that in the migration process the diffusion coefficient is more important than the amount of nanoparticles concentration.

Abstract
Under the ExpoCast program, United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) researchers have developed a high-throughput (HT) framework for estimating aggregate exposures to chemicals from multiple pathways to support rapid prioritization of chemicals. Here, we present methods to estimate HT exposures to chemicals migrating into food from food contact substances (FCS). These methods consisted of combining an empirical model of chemical migration with estimates of daily population food intakes derived from food diaries from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). A linear regression model for migration at equilibrium was developed by fitting available migration measurements as a function of temperature, food type (i.e., fatty, aqueous, acidic, alcoholic), initial chemical concentration in the FCS (C0) and chemical properties. The most predictive variables in the resulting model were C0, molecular weight, log Kow, and food type (R2=0.71, p<0.0001). Migration-based concentrations for 1009 chemicals identified via publicly-available data sources as being present in polymer FCSs were predicted for 12 food groups (combinations of 3 storage temperatures and food type). The model was parameterized with screening-level estimates of C0 based on the functional role of chemicals in FCS. By combining these concentrations with daily intakes for food groups derived from NHANES, population ingestion exposures of chemical in mg/kg-bodyweight/day (mg/kg-BW/day) were estimated. Calibrated aggregate exposures were estimated for 1931 chemicals by fitting HT FCS and consumer product exposures to exposures inferred from NHANES biomonitoring (R2=0.61, p<0.001); both FCS and consumer product pathway exposures were significantly predictive of inferred exposures. Including the FCS pathway significantly impacted the ratio of predicted exposures to those estimated to produce steady-state blood concentrations equal to in-vitro bioactive concentrations. While these HT methods have large uncertainties (and thus may not be appropriate for assessments of single chemicals), they can provide critical refinement to aggregate exposure predictions used in risk-based chemical priority-setting.

Abstract
The widely accepted and used migration models that describe the mass transport from polymeric packaging material to food and food simulants are confirmed here. A critical review of the most accepted models is presented in detail. Their main advantages and weak points, regarding their predictive accuracy, are discussed and weighted toward their usage extensiveness. By identifying the specific areas where using such models may not provide a strong correlation between theoretical and actual results, this work also aims in outlining some particular directions regarding further research on food - packaging interactions.

Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of parameters such as temperature and type of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film on the log Kp/f values of seven model migrants in food simulants. Two different types of LDPE films contaminated by extrusion and immersion were placed in contact with three food simulants including 20% ethanol, 50% ethanol and olive oil under several time-temperature conditions. Results suggest that most log Kp/f values are little affected by these parameters in this study. In addition, the relation between log Kp/f and log Po/w was established for each food simulant and regression lines, as well as correlation coefficients, were calculated. Correlations were compared with data from real foodstuffs. Data presented in this study could be valuable in assigning certain foods to particular food simulants as well as predicting the mass transfer of potential migrants into different types of food or food simulants, avoiding tedious and expensive laboratory analysis. The results could be especially useful for regulatory agencies as well as for the food industry.

Abstract
The mass transport process (migration) of a model substance, benzophenone (BZP), from LDPE into selected foodstuffs at three temperatures was studied. A mathematical model based on Fick's Second Law of Diffusion was used to simulate the migration process and a good correlation between experimental and predicted values was found. The acquired results contribute to a better understanding of this phenomenon and the parameters so-derived were incorporated into the migration module of the recently launched FACET tool (Flavourings, Additives and Food Contact Materials Exposure Tool). The migration tests were carried out at different time-temperature conditions, and BZP was extracted from LDPE and analysed by HPLC-DAD. With all data, the parameters for migration modelling (diffusion and partition coefficients) were calculated. Results showed that the diffusion coefficients (within both the polymer and the foodstuff) are greatly affected by the temperature and food's physical state, whereas the partition coefficient was affected significantly only by food characteristics, particularly fat content.

Abstract
Today most foods are available in a packed form. During storage, the migration of chemical substances from food packaging materials into food may occur and may therefore be a potential source of consumer exposure. To protect the consumer, standard migration tests are laid down in Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011. When using those migration tests and applying additional conservative conventions, estimated exposure is linked with large uncertainties including a certain margin of safety. Thus the research project FACET was initiated within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission with the aim of developing a probabilistic migration modelling framework which allows one (1) to calculate migration into foods under real conditions of use; and (2) to deliver realistic concentration estimates for consumer exposure modelling for complex packaging materials (including multi-material multilayer structures). The aim was to carry out within the framework of the FACET project a comprehensive systematic study on the solubility behaviour of foodstuffs for potentially migrating organic chemicals. Therefore a rapid and convenient method was established to obtain partition coefficients between polymer and food, KP/F. With this method approximately 700 time-dependent kinetic experiments from spiked polyethylene films were performed using model migrants, foods and ethanol-water mixtures. The partition coefficients of migrants between polymer and food (KP/F) were compared with those obtained using ethanol-water mixtures (KP/F's) to investigate whether an allocation of food groups with common migration behaviour to certain ethanol-water mixtures could be made. These studies have confirmed that the solubility of a migrant is mainly dependent on the fat content in the food and on the ethanol concentration of ethanol-water mixtures. Therefore dissolution properties of generic food groups for migrants can be assigned to those of ethanol-water mixtures. All foodstuffs (including dry foods) when allocated to FACET model food group codes can be classified into a reduced number of food categories each represented by a corresponding ethanol-water equivalency.

Abstract
Nowadays food wrapping assures attractive presentation and simplifies self-service shopping. Polyvinylchloride (PVC)- and polyethylene (PE)-based cling-films are widely used worldwide for wrapping cheeses. For this purpose, films used in retail possess suitable technical properties such as clinginess and unrolling capacity, that are achieved by using specific plasticizers during their manufacturing process. In the present study, the main VOCs of three cling-films (either PVC-based or PE-based) for retail use were characterized by means of Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction and GC/MS. In addition, the effects of cling film type and contact time on the migration of VOCs from the films to four different PDO Italian cheeses during cold storage under light or dark were also investigated. Among the VOCs isolated from cling-films, PVC released 2-ethylhexanol and triacetin. These compounds can likely be considered as a “non-intentionally added substance”. These same compounds were also detected in cheeses wrapped in PVC films with the highest concentration found after 20 days storage. The PE cling-film was shown to possess a simpler VOC profile, lacking some molecules peculiar to PVC films. The same conclusions can be drawn for cheeses wrapped in the PE cling-film. Other VOCs found in wrapped cheeses were likely to have been released either by direct transfer from the materials used for the manufacture of cling-films or from contamination of the films. Overall, HS-SPME is shown to be a rapid and solvent free technique to screen the VOCs profile of cling-films, and to detect VOCs migration from cling-films to cheese under real retail storage conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Historical proven wood species have no reported adverse health effect associated with its past use. Different historical proven species have traditionally been used to manufacture different wooden food contact items. This study uses survey questionnaires to assess suppliers', manufacturers', retailers' and consumers' (end-users') preferences for specific wood species, to examine the considerations that inform these preferences and to investigate the extent of awareness of the chemical benefits and chemical hazards associated with wooden food contact material use. METHODS Through the combined use of a cross sectional approach and a case study design, 25 suppliers, 25 manufacturers, 25 retailers and 125 consumers (end-users) of wooden food contact materials in four suburbs in Kumasi Metropolitan Area (Anloga junction, Ahinsan Bus Stop, Ahwia-Pankrono and Race Course) and Ashanti Akyim Agogo in the Ashanti Akyim North District of the Ashanti Region were administered with closed ended questionnaires. The questionnaires were prepared in English, but local language, Twi, was used to translate and communicate the content of the questionnaire where necessary. RESULTS Suppliers', manufacturers' and retailers' preferences for specific wood species for most wooden cookware differed from that of consumers (end-users). But all respondent groups failed to indicate any awareness of chemical benefits or chemical hazards associated with either the choice of specific wood species for specific wooden cookware or with the general use of wooden food contact materials. The lack of appreciation of chemical benefits or hazards associated with active principles of wooden cookware led to heavy reliance of consumers (end-users) on the wood density, price, attractive grain pattern and colour or on the judgement of retailers in their choice of specific species for a wooden cookware. CONCLUSION This study contributes some practical suggestions to guide national policy development on improvement in quality of available wooden food contact materials in Ghana.

Os polímeros constituem um grande percentual da composição do RSUs, sendo que as embalagens plásticas contribuem com maior volume e massa. Apesar da reciclagem de polímeros estarem se consolidando no Brasil, graças ao seu mercado ascendente e promissor, existem ainda restrições quanto a sua utilização em contato com alimentos devido aos eventuais processos de migração de contaminantes que podem ocorrer da resina reciclada para o alimento. Por outro lado, dados recentes do setor indicam que a maior parte do consumo de resina virgem é destinada, justamente, para o mercado de embalagens alimentícias. Assim, o desenvolvimento e o gerenciamento de tecnologias que possibilitem o retorno destes materiais a sua aplicação original é de grande importância para sociedade contemporânea. Em um panorama geral, este trabalho aborda as exigências e limitações do uso de polímeros reciclados para contato com alimentos.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to develop a rapid multimethod for the analysis of six photoinitiators (PIs) in powdered milk and to study the migration of these PIs from LDPE packaging into powdered milk. The optimized HPLC-DAD method showed high correlation coefficients (>0.9999) over a concentration range of 0.1-10.9 mg/L. The kinetics of migration of the photoinitiators from LDPE packaging into powdered milk were determined at different temperatures. The key parameters of migration phenomena (diffusion and partition coefficients) were determined. The diffusion coefficients at 5 degrees C ranged between 8.4 x 10(-12) (for ITX) and 5.1 x 10(-10) (for benzophenone) and those at 40 degrees C between 5.9 x 10(-10) (for ITX) and 6.1 x 10(-9) (for Irgacure 184). The diffusion coefficients of the six model migrants under study increased with temperature and showed a good Arrhenius relationship between 5 and 40 degrees C.
