Abstract
In older adults' everyday life, time-based prospective memory (TBPM) is relevant as health-related intentions are often part of daily activities. Nonetheless, it is still unclear which task-related factors can potentially moderate the magnitude of age-related differences, such as duration of the PM target time (the time-window within which an individual must complete a given TBPM task), the frequency of the TBPM tasks, and the criterion chosen to compute PM accuracy. The present meta-analysis aimed to quantify age-related differences in laboratory TBPM tasks, and to investigate how specific task-related factors potentially moderate the magnitude of age effects. The results showed that age effects consistently emerged among the studies, with older adults showing lower TBPM performance and checking the clock less often than younger adults, especially for shorter intervals (e.g., ≤ 4 min). Furthermore, the results indicated that the duration of the PM target time interacted with the frequency of the PM task, suggesting that learning effects may attenuate the magnitude of age differences in TBPM performance. The results are discussed in terms of potential implications about the possible cognitive processes involved in TBPM and aging, as well as in terms of robustness of the TBPM laboratory paradigm in aging research.

Abstract
PURPOSE Aging is associated with increased needs related to complex decisions, particularly in medical and social issues. However, the complexity of decision-making involves many neurological functions and structures which are potentially altered by cognitive aging. METHODOLOGY A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines to examine changes in decision-making occurring in normal cognitive aging. The keywords "decision making" and "normal aging" were used to find the clinical studies and literature reviews focused on these changes. RESULTS A total of 97 articles were considered in the review, and ultimately 40 articles were selected, including 30 studies and 10 literature reviews. The data from these studies were of uneven quality and too disparate to allow meta-analysis according to PRISMA criteria. Nevertheless, a key result of the analysis is the decrease of processing speed with aging. In ambiguous decision-making situations, the alteration of the ventromedial system is associated with changes in motivation profiles. These changes can be compensated by experience. However, difficulties arise for older adults in the case of one-off decisions, which are very common in the medical or medico-social domains. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive aging is associated with a slowdown in processing speed of decision-making, especially in ambiguous situations. However, decision-making processes which are based on experience and cases in which sufficient time is available are less affected by aging. These results highlight the relativity of decision-making capacities in cognitive aging.

Abstract
Schizophrenia patients are known to have prospective memory (PM) deficits. There is no robust evidence showing that PM deficits have a major impact on community living skills in schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to examine the association between PM and community living skills in schizophrenia. Forty-four individuals with schizophrenia formed the study sample. Participants׳ psychopathology, prospective and retrospective memory, level of intelligence, and community living skills were measured with standardized instruments. In bivariate analyses, community living skills overall but not self-care correlated with PM total and subscales scores. In multivariate analyses, event-based PM was more predictive than time-based PM of the level of community living skills. In conclusion, PM has a significant impact on community living skills in schizophrenia and attention should be paid to this type of memory disturbance in rehabilitation of schizophrenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Prospective memory (PM) refers to the ability to undertake intended actions in the future. The functional significance of PM in bipolar disorder (BD) has not yet been investigated. This study examined PM impairment and its role in community living skills in clinically stable individuals with BD. METHODS Seventy-six individuals with BD and 44 healthy individuals were assessed with the Chinese version of the Cambridge Prospective Memory Test. Socio-demographic characteristics, retrospective memory (RM; the ability to recall or recognize past information), and intelligence were also measured in all participants. The clinical condition and community living skills of patients with BD were rated independently with standardized instruments. RESULTS Patients with BD showed PM impairment and their PM total scores independently predicted the level of community living skills in regression analyses. In follow-up analyses, the contribution was found to be accounted for by the time-based PM scores. CONCLUSIONS Given the expanding body of research on the utility of PM in predicting functioning, these findings further support the role of PM in community living skills in individuals with BD. The results suggest that PM training might be an integral part of clinical rehabilitation devised for individuals with BD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated mental functions expected to remain impaired or not ain adulthood following childhood-onset brain lesions. METHODS Thirty unilaterally lesioned young adults were tested a decade after lesion onset with an effort-demanding complex executive function (EF) task as well as a task of incidental declarative retrospective episodic recognition memory (IRM). Thirty neurotypical participants were also tested. RESULTS The EF task was significantly impaired in the lesion group and significantly more so than the IRM task. Regarding the lesioned cases, performance on EF, but not IRM, was significantly positively correlated with long-term educational persistence (EP). Both EF and EP but not IRM were significantly positively correlated with the age of onset of the lesion. Severity of neurological impairment was unrelated to any variable. CONCLUSION Mental abilities acquired through early schooling remain impaired into adulthood when early schooling is disturbed, not everyday memory which does not depend on schooling.

Abstract
Impaired executive function and impulsiveness or intolerance to boredom in adult attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are thought to compromise performance at work. Several task parameters help people with ADHD to perform better on computerized cognitive tasks, namely reduced response-to-stimulus interval, discriminative feedback, or a format resembling a videogame. However, still very little is known about how these contexts might be helpful in a real work environment. We developed a computerized task resembling a fast-paced videogame with no response-to-stimulus interval and constant and diverse discriminative error feedback. The task included several measurements of high-order executive function (planning, working memory, and prospective memory) formatted as a single multitask simulating occupational activities (SOA). We also administered the Continuous Performance Test-II (CPT-II), a very simple vigilance task without discriminative feedback and with long response-to-stimulus intervals. We tested 30 adults answering to DSM-IV criteria of ADHD (combined type) and 30 IQ-matched adults without ADHD. As has been reported many times, the ADHD participants made significantly more errors of commission than the control participants on the CPT-II, whereas the two groups made the same number of errors of commission on the SOA. The ADHD group also sought discriminative feedback significantly more actively on the SOA than the control group and performed at par with the control group in all respects. There was no speed/accuracy trade-off, nor was there any evidence of other costs of normalization on the SOA. Impulsiveness in adult ADHD is compensable on a task simulating the work environment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Though juvenile and adult ADHD cases are well known to have a nonverbal planning impairment, a verbal-planning impairment has been demonstrated only in juvenile ADHD. The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether a verbal planning impairment also characterizes adult ADHD. METHODS A cohort of 30 adult ADHD clients of a university psychological clinic are compared to 30 age-, education-, gender-, and IQ-matched persons recruited from the general population who did not have ADHD. The dependent measure is a set of 6 paper/pencil 10-item script generation tasks. RESULTS The findings reveal that the ADHD cohort was significantly impaired on the script task and the script task correlated significantly with severity of ADHD (CAARS index + WURS), whereas several neuropsychological measures of executive function (Stroop, COWA, Rey's Complex Figure, D2, CVLT, CPT-II) did not. Findings further showed that the script measure was weakly correlated with the other established neuropsychological measures of executive function (r < .46, shared variance of less than 21%). CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the study findings, it is concluded that verbal planning measured with script generation tasks is distinctly impaired in clinically referred adult ADHD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Executive functioning deficits have often been described in normal aging. They are also known to be a frequent sequel of traumatic brain injury, where patients may exhibit severe long-standing impairments in instrumental activities of daily living. One could therefore expect that cerebral lesions affecting executive functioning would result in more severe impairments in older patients. We previously developed an ecological assessment of executive functions, consisting of a cooking task, requiring multitasking abilities and known to be sensitive to a dysexecutive syndrome [Cortex 36 (2000) 649-669]. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of age on the cognitive and ecological assessments of executive functions in a group of patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) resulting in a dysexecutive syndrome. Studies in this area usually focus on patients older than 60 or 65, but we chose to analyze the effect of age in a younger population. We hypothesized that older patients would have poorer performances on the cognitive and ecological tests of executive functioning, when compared to younger patients. METHODS Forty-five patients with ABI resulting in frontal lesions and a dysexecutive syndrome participated in this study. Patients underwent a comprehensive battery of cognitive tests assessing executive functioning, as well as the cooking task. We also studied a group of 12 control subjects who performed the cooking task. RESULTS No effect of age was found on performance in the cooking task in the control group. Age was not related to demographic parameters or injury severity in the ABI group. Although the ABI group was relatively young (mean age: 40.3 years (S.D.=12.5), ranging from 17 to 63), results indicated a significant deleterious effect of age on the cognitive tests of executive functioning in the ABI group. We also highlighted a significant worsening of patients' performance in the cooking task with age, and this effect was found on several variables of task analysis: the number of errors and occurrence of dangerous behaviors. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates the deleterious effect of aging on cognitive and ecological assessment of executive functioning after ABI. The strength of this study is that it deviated from the traditional age considered in studies of elderly populations and focused on younger patients. It is therefore important to consider the implication that this may have on a patient's rehabilitation program and postinjury discharge.

Abstract
We explored the effect of age on executive functions by using script-sequencing and script-sorting tasks. Older participants (n = 39), relative to young subjects (n = 40), committed more errors in script sequencing. However, there was no difference in performance between elderly and young subjects in excluding irrelevant items. These results suggest that aging generates impairment in the ability to produce temporally coherent sequences without deficit in the ability to eliminate distractors in the action domain. We proposed that the sequencing difficulties in elderly participants could be due to working-memory and shifting deficits mediated by changes in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
