Soft drink and non-caloric soft drink intake and their association with blood pressure: the Health Workers Cohort Study. Nutr J 2022; 21:37. Abstract
Background A few prospective studies have investigated the potential association of soft drink and non-caloric soft drink intake with high blood pressure using methods that adequately consider changes in intake over time and hypertensive status at baseline. Objective To prospectively examine the association of soft drink and non-caloric soft drink intake with systolic and diastolic blood pressure in a sample of Mexican adults, overall and by hypertension status. Methods We used data from the Health Workers Cohort Study spanning from 2004 to 2018 (n = 1,324 adults). Soft drink and non-caloric soft drink intake were assessed with a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. We fit multivariable-adjusted fixed-effects models to test the association of soft drink and non-caloric soft drink intake with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The models were adjusted for potential confounders and considering the potential modifying effect of hypertension status at baseline. Results A one-serving increase in soft drink intake was associated with a 2.08 mm Hg (95% CI: 0.21, 3.94) increase in systolic blood pressure and 2.09 mm Hg (95% CI: 0.81, 3.36) increase in diastolic blood pressure over ten years. A stronger association between soft drink intake and diastolic pressure was observed among participants with versus without hypertension at baseline. We found no association between non-caloric soft drink intake and blood pressure. Conclusions Our findings support the hypothesis that soft drink intake increases blood pressure. While further studies should be conducted to confirm our findings, food policies and recommendations to limit soft drink intake are likely to help reduce blood pressure at the population level. We probably did not find an association between non-caloric soft drink intake and blood pressure because of the low consumption of this type of beverage in the cohort. More studies will be needed to understand the potential effect of non-caloric beverages on blood pressure. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effect of swimming training (T) on the renal system and body composition parameters in young animals treated with a high sucrose diet (SUD) during 12 weeks. RESULTS The SUD impaired the physical performance, increased the body adiposity index (BAI), Lee index (LI) and retroperitoneal adipose tissue (RAT) weight, plasma creatinine and number renal cells nuclei, decreased urinary volume and urinary creatinine excretion besides creatinine clearance. The T reversed the increased the BAI, LI, RAT weight, plasma and urinary creatinine, creatinine clearance and number renal cells nuclei in addition to promoting decrease in urinary protein excretion. This study found that eight weeks of swimming physical training protected renal function and restored normal glomerular filtration rate (GFR) values. Swimming training also contributed to prevention of the onset of a renal inflammatory process and caused a decrease in the risk of development of obesity promoted by SUD decreasing the body composition parameters (BAI, LI, and RAT weight).

Abstract
Background: Medical professionals attribute a crucial role in the development of several age-related, chronic health maladies to glucose-insulin perturbations - particularly, discernible insulin resistance (IR). However, little information is available concerning the degree to which relatively minor changes in IR participate over time in overall aging population, e.g., when circulating glucose and/or insulin concentrations are consistently within the higher end of normally accepted ranges. Objective: Obtaining precise knowledge is important, because proper nutritional management has the distinct capability of ameliorating the consequences. Methods: Five key concepts are suggested to underpin current thinking as to the applicable mechanisms and these are (1) the practical use of fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels as an estimate of IR, (2) the potential role of even slightly aberrant insulin regulation over time in the aging process, (3) the implementation of "continuum of risks" rather than checkpoints in considering prevention, (4) the presence and meaning of an aging paradox discovered in a recent study, and (5) the importance nutritional considerations in the "deadly triangle" as key factors in aging. Conclusions: Maintaining relatively low levels of FBG representing IR during aging via nutritional means has the potential to deliver a longer, more healthful lifespan as well as ameliorate many adverse manifestations of aging.

Abstract
Previous studies reported that diets high in simple carbohydrates could increase blood pressure in rodents. We hypothesized that the converse, a low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet, might reduce blood pressure. Six-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR; n = 54) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY; n = 53, normotensive control) were fed either a control diet (C; 10% fat, 70% carbohydrate, 20% protein) or a low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet (HF; 20% carbohydrate, 60% fat, 20% protein). After 10 wk, SHR-HF had lower (P < 0.05) mean arterial pressure than SHR-C (148 ± 3 vs. 159 ± 3 mmHg) but a similar degree of cardiac hypertrophy (33.4 ± 0.4 vs. 33.1 ± 0.4 heart weight/tibia length, mg/mm). Mesenteric arteries and the entire aorta were used to assess vascular function and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) signaling, respectively. Endothelium-dependent (acetylcholine) relaxation of mesenteric arteries was improved (P < 0.05) in SHR-HF vs. SHR-C, whereas contraction (potassium chloride, phenylephrine) was reduced (P < 0.05). Phosphorylation of eNOSSer1177 increased (P < 0.05) in arteries from SHR-HF vs. SHR-C. Plasma glucose, insulin, and homoeostatic model of insulin assessment were lower (P < 0.05) in SHR-HF vs. SHR-C, whereas peripheral insulin sensitivity (insulin tolerance test) was similar. After a 10-h fast, insulin stimulation (2 U/kg ip) increased (P < 0.05) phosphorylation of AktSer473 and S6 in heart and gastrocnemius similarly in SHR-C vs. SHR-HF. In conclusion, a low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet reduced blood pressure and improved arterial function in SHR without producing signs of insulin resistance or altering insulin-mediated signaling in the heart, skeletal muscle, or vasculature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed the ability of two commercially-available fractions labeled SX and D derived from the edible maitake mushroom to overcome many age-associated metabolic perturbations such as progressive, age-related elevation of blood pressure, over activity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), decreased insulin sensitivity, and inflammation in an in vivo laboratory model. DESIGN AND METHOD We divided forty mature, female Sprague-Dawley rats (SD) into five groups of eight. SD ingested regular rat chow containing added sucrose (20% w/w). The groups received baseline diet alone (control) or baseline diet containing captopril, niacin-bound chromium, maitake fraction SX, or maitake fraction D. In addition to blood pressure readings, the following procedures were implemented: losartan and insulin challenges, evaluation of serum ACE activity, glucose tolerance testing, blood chemistries, LNAME challenge, and measurement of various circulating cytokines. RESULTS We found that implementation of all test conditions stopped the gradual elevation of systolic blood pressure (SBP) in the SD over the four months of study, even reversing some of the previous elevation that occurred over time. In general, the treatment groups showed decreased activity of the RAS estimated by less lowering of SBP after losartan challenge and decreased serum ACE activity and were more sensitive to exogenous insulin challenge. TNFa levels decreased in all four test groups suggesting a lessening of the inflammatory state. CONCLUSIONS We believe our data suggest that maitake mushroom fractions lessen age-related hypertension, at least in part, via effects on the RAS; enhance insulin sensitivity; and reduce some aspects of inflammation--actions that should lead to a longer, healthier life span.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has been associated with an elevated risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type II diabetes mellitus. However, the effects of SSB consumption on blood pressure (BP) are uncertain. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between changes in SSB consumption and changes in BP among adults. METHODS AND RESULTS This was a prospective analysis of 810 adults who participated in the PREMIER Study (an 18-month behavioral intervention trial). BP and dietary intake (by two 24-hour recalls) were measured at baseline and at 6 and 18 months. Mixed-effects models were applied to estimate the changes in BP in responding to changes in SSB consumption. At baseline, mean SSB intake was 0.9+/-1.0 servings per day (10.5+/-11.9 fl oz/d), and mean systolic BP/diastolic BP was 134.9+/-9.6/84.8+/-4.2 mm Hg. After potential confounders were controlled for, a reduction in SSB of 1 serving per day was associated with a 1.8-mm Hg (95% confidence interval, 1.2 to 2.4) reduction in systolic BP and 1.1-mm Hg (95% confidence interval, 0.7 to 1.4) reduction in diastolic BP over 18 months. After additional adjustment for weight change over the same period, a reduction in SSB intake was still significantly associated with reductions in systolic and diastolic BPs (P<0.05). Reduced intake of sugars was also significantly associated with reduced BP. No association was found for diet beverage consumption or caffeine intake and BP. These findings suggest that sugars may be the nutrients that contribute to the observed association between SSB and BP. CONCLUSIONS Reduced consumption of SSB and sugars was significantly associated with reduced BP. Reducing SSB and sugar consumption may be an important dietary strategy to lower BP. Abstract
Chronic arsenic exposure is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease and has a strong correlation with hypertension. Oxidative stress may be one of the major contributors to arsenic-induced hypertension. To investigate the antioxidative and CYP systems through which inorganic arsenic compounds may contribute to blood pressure elevation in rats, we administered 50ppm arsenic (as arsenite and arsenate) in drinking water to Wistar rats for 200 successive days. Systolic blood pressure was determined every 20 days, and blood samples and tissues were collected at each time point for biological analysis. Compared to the control group, weight gain in the arsenic-exposed animals was slightly but significantly lower, whereas the relative weights of the various tissues was higher. Blood pressure was elevated until day 80 in both arsenic groups followed by a time-dependent change in the antioxidative enzyme system. The hypertensive effect remained until day 200 for arsenite when the change by arsenate was minimized. Patterns of antioxidative enzyme change differed between arsenite and arsenate. However, the most common marker of hypertension, the angiotensin-converting enzyme, showed no significant change in either arsenic group. CYP4A was highly expressed in both arsenic groups, particularly in the arsenite group. These results indicate that low but chronic arsenic exposure might cause elevated blood pressure and antioxidative interference. Furthermore, CYP4A might be more important than ACE in contributing to arsenic-induced hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Consumption of high-glycemic index foods contributes to the development of hypertension in some patients. Likewise, in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), high sucrose promotes a secondary rise in systolic blood pressure (SBP). Chromium (III) (Cr(3+)) prevents sucrose-induced hypertension, but leaves the basal hypertension that characterizes SHR intact. METHODS Since hypertension entails increased peripheral resistance, we compared effects of Cr(3+) on resistance arteries from SHR fed low-glycemic (starch) versus high-glycemic (sucrose) index diets. Subgroups of SHR also received Cr(3+). Structure, stiffness, and vasodilation of mesenteric resistance arteries were studied using pressurized myography. RESULTS Sucrose increased SBP in SHR and, exclusively in sucrose-fed SHR, Cr(3+) reduced SBP and augmented acetylcholine or nitroprusside-dependent vasodilation. Neither sucrose nor Cr(3+) affected artery structure or stiffness. Since Cr(3+) enhanced vasodilation, we assessed endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), guanylate cyclase, cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG-1alpha and 1beta), and PKG activity by immunoblotting. Sucrose reduced eNOS, PKG-1beta, and PKG activity. Cr(3+) prevented the effects of sucrose on NO signaling. CONCLUSION In hypertension exacerbated by high-glycemic index diet, Cr(3+) reduces SBP. The BP-lowering effect of Cr(3+), selectively on sucrose-induced but not basal hypertension in SHR, involves at least in part, improving vasodilatory function vis-à-vis restoration of NO signaling in resistance arteries.

Abstract
A low fat, high carbohydrate diet in combination with regular exercise is the traditional recommendation for treating diabetes. Compliance with these lifestyle modifications is less than satisfactory, however, and a high carbohydrate diet raises postprandial plasma glucose and insulin secretion, thereby increasing risk of CVD, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity and diabetes. Moreover, the current epidemic of diabetes and obesity has been, over the past three decades, accompanied by a significant decrease in fat consumption and an increase in carbohydrate consumption. This apparent failure of the traditional diet, from a public health point of view, indicates that alternative dietary approaches are needed. Because carbohydrate is the major secretagogue of insulin, some form of carbohydrate restriction is a prima facie candidate for dietary control of diabetes. Evidence from various randomized controlled trials in recent years has convinced us that such diets are safe and effective, at least in short-term. These data show low carbohydrate diets to be comparable or better than traditional low fat high carbohydrate diets for weight reduction, improvement in the dyslipidemia of diabetes and metabolic syndrome as well as control of blood pressure, postprandial glycemia and insulin secretion. Furthermore, the ability of low carbohydrate diets to reduce triglycerides and to increase HDL is of particular importance. Resistance to such strategies has been due, in part, to equating it with the popular Atkins diet. However, there are many variations and room for individual physician planning. Some form of low carbohydrate diet, in combination with exercise, is a viable option for patients with diabetes. However, the extreme reduction of carbohydrate of popular diets (<30 g/day) cannot be recommended for a diabetic population at this time without further study. On the other hand, the dire objections continually raised in the literature appear to have very little scientific basis. Whereas it is traditional to say that more work needs to be done, the same is true of the assumed standard low fat diets which have an ambiguous record at best. We see current trends in the national dietary recommendations as a positive sign and an appropriate move in the right direction.

Abstract
Essential hypertension in humans may develop through a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Diet has long been under investigation as a potential effector of blood pressure. A diet high in sucrose or fructose can give rise to hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance and hypertension. Insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and oxidative stress are common features of hypertension. If glucose metabolism through the glycolytic pathway is impaired, as in insulin resistance, there will be a build-up of glyceraldehyde, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate with further metabolism to methylglyoxal, a highly reactive ketoaldehyde. Excess aldehydes can bind sulfhydryl groups of membrane proteins, altering membrane calcium channels, increasing cytosolic free calcium, peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure. The presence of reactive aldehydes can also lead to oxidative stress. Dietary management through lower sucrose or fructose intake and increased consumption of vitamins improves glucose metabolism, lowers tissue aldehydes, increases anti-oxidant capacity and may also prevent hypertension.

Abstract
This study included the following experiments: (1) effects of dextrose solution (250 mL of water containing 75 g of dextrose) or honey solution (250 mL of water containing 75 g of natural honey) on plasma glucose level (PGL), plasma insulin, and plasma C-peptide (eight subjects); (2) effects of dextrose, honey, or artificial honey (250 mL of water containing 35 g of dextrose and 40 g of fructose) on cholesterol and triglycerides (TG) (nine subjects); (3) effects of honey solution, administered for 15 days, on PGL, blood lipids, C-reactive protein (CRP), and homocysteine (eight subjects); (4) effects of honey or artificial honey on cholesterol and TG in six patients with hypercholesterolemia and five patients with hypertriglyceridemia; (5) effects of honey for 15 days on blood lipid and CRP in five patients with elevated cholesterol and CRP; (6) effects of 70 g of dextrose or 90 g of honey on PGL in seven patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; and (7) effects of 30 g of sucrose or 30 g of honey on PGL, plasma insulin, and plasma C-peptide in five diabetic patients. In healthy subjects, dextrose elevated PGL at 1 (53%) and 2 (3%) hours, and decreased PGL after 3 hours (20%). Honey elevated PGL after 1 hour (14%) and decreased it after 3 hours (10%). Elevation of insulin and C-peptide was significantly higher after dextrose than after honey. Dextrose slightly reduced cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) after 1 hour and significantly after 2 hours, and increased TG after 1, 2, and 3 hours. Artificial honey slightly decreased cholesterol and LDL-C and elevated TG. Honey reduced cholesterol, LDL-C, and TG and slightly elevated high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). Honey consumed for 15 days decreased cholesterol (7%), LDL-C (1%), TG (2%), CRP (7%), homocysteine (6%), and PGL (6%), and increased HDL-C (2%). In patients with hypertriglyceridemia, artificial honey increased TG, while honey decreased TG. In patients with hyperlipidemia, artificial honey increased LDL-C, while honey decreased LDL-C. Honey decreased cholesterol (8%), LDL-C (11%), and CRP (75%) after 15 days. In diabetic patients, honey compared with dextrose caused a significantly lower rise of PGL. Elevation of PGL was greater after honey than after sucrose at 30 minutes, and was lower after honey than it was after sucrose at 60, 120, and 180 minutes. Honey caused greater elevation of insulin than sucrose did after 30, 120, and 180 minutes. Honey reduces blood lipids, homocysteine, and CRP in normal and hyperlipidemic subjects. Honey compared with dextrose and sucrose caused lower elevation of PGL in diabetics.

Abstract
We examined the effects of anesthetic, age, and strain on oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT, 1 g/kg body weight) and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests (IPGTT, 2 g/kg body weight) in spontaneously hypertensive (SH) and Wistar rats. Pentobarbital anesthesia caused an elevation in basal glucose and insulin levels in Wistar rats at 9 and 16 weeks of age and in SH rats at 9 weeks. Anesthesia increased the insulin output during an OGTT in both strains of rats while glucose was unchanged. Anesthesia reduced the insulin sensitivity index calculated from the OGTT but not from the IPGTT data. The age of the rats (9-11 vs. 16-18 weeks) had no effect on the basal glucose or insulin levels, but older Wistar rats had a greater insulin output following oral glucose and older SH rats had a greater insulin output following intraperitoneal glucose. On the basis of the insulin sensitivity index, SH rats were clearly more insulin resistant than age-matched Wistar rats. The SH rats also had higher basal insulin levels, as well as higher insulin output, following both glucose challenges. In summary, SH rats are more insulin resistant than Wistar rats, and anesthesia, which elevated basal glucose and insulin levels and increased the insulin output in response to a glucose challenge, may increase insulin resistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effects of weight cycling and exercise on blood pressure and macronutrient intake in Sprague-Dawley rats. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 62; 5 months old) were assigned to an ad libitum (Con) or weight-cycled (Cyc) group. They were either sedentary (Con-Sed and Cyc-Sed) or exercise-trained (Con-Ex and Cyc-Ex) on a motorized treadmill (20 m/minute; 60 minutes/day; 6 days/week). The Cyc groups underwent 2 cycles of 3 weeks of 60% food restriction followed by 5 weeks of ad libitum refeeding using a macronutrient self-selection diet. Body mass and food intake were analyzed weekly. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was measured at baseline and during the first and fifth weeks of each refeeding. RESULTS For both cycling periods, SBP was elevated in Cyc vs. Con groups at Week 1 of refeeding, but was similar among groups by Week 5 of refeeding. Both Con groups had greater total energy intake than the Cyc groups for both cycling periods (Cycle 1: 2882.2 +/- 75.1, Con-Sed; 2916.1 +/- 67.1, Con-Ex; 2692.2 +/- 58.7, Cyc-Sed; and 2780.5 +/- 52.4 kcal, Cyc-Ex) (Cycle 2: 2815.8 +/- 75.1, Con-Sed; 2938.8 +/- 49.4, Con-Ex; 2577.1 +/- 60.5, Cyc-Sed; and 2643.5 +/- 65.9 kcal, Cyc-Ex). Relative fat intake (percentage of total kcal/week) was significantly less for Con-Ex and Cyc-Ex than Con-Sed and Cyc-Sed throughout both refeeding periods. DISCUSSION Weight cycling failed to produce significant sustained effects on SBP, body mass, or food intake. Exercise training, irrespective of diet, lowered dietary fat intake.
