Effectiveness of infant massage on babies growth, mother-baby attachment and mothers' self-confidence: A randomized controlled trial

Infant massage is a unique massage that can be application to babies in the postpartum period for centuries. While baby massage provides contact between the baby and the mother, it supports the growth processes of the baby. This study aimed to investigate the effects of online infant massage training on infant growth, mother-infant attachment, and mothers' self-confidence. This randomized controlled clinical trial included 60 healthy-term infants and mother. The Demographic Data Collection Form, Maternal Attachment Scale, and Pharis Self-Confidence Scale were completed by all the mothers participating in the study. At the end of the 4th week, infant massage training was given to the mothers of the babies in the massage group by the primary investigator. Body weight, height, and head circumference measurements were made at the end of the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th week of both group babies. At the end of the 20th week, the self-confidence of the mothers in both groups was assessed using the Maternal Attachment Scale and Pharis Self-Confidence Scale. Infants in the massage group had significantly higher mean body weight at the end of the 8th week (p = 0.006) and mean height at the end of 20th week (p = 0.05) than the infants in the control group. The Maternal Attachment Scale values were higher for the mothers in the massage group (p = 0.030). Infant massage is an effective method that strengthens maternal attachment and increases body weight and height in infants. The study is registered under the ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT05302427.

The effect of antenatal education on expectant mother's childbirth attitudes, maternal role attainment, and self-confidence levels

We aim to determine the effect of antenatal education on the attitudes of expectant mothers toward birth, maternal role attainment and self-confidence levels. We carried out this quasi-experimental, non-randomized, prospective study in a hospital located in Istanbul, in the pre- and post-education model. Women in the education group (EG = 60) attended 6 weeks of education. Women in the control group (CG = 60) participated in a periodic follow-up visit. We collected the data using Childbirth Attitudes Questionnaire (CAQ), Pharis Self-Confidence Scale (PSCS), and Semantic Differential Scale-Myself as Mother (MMS). We made three measures in total: in the first visit, after six weeks and in the sixth week postpartum. We found the mean scores of second measurement of CAQ, PSCS, third measurement of MMS statistically significant in favor of EG (p < 0.05). Antenatal educations positively affect childbirth attitude, maternal role attainment and self-confidence levels.

The role of midwives in supporting the development of the mother-infant relationship: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

The mother-infant relationship is complex and dynamic, informing the psychological development of the infant through bonding and attachment. Positive early interactions influence the quality of this relationship. Midwives are well placed to support the developing relationship between the mother and baby, yet there has been limited research exploring the role of the midwife in this context.

AIM

To explore interventions that have been provided by the midwife which support the development of the maternal-fetal or mother-infant relationship amongst a low-risk population from pregnancy, and up to six weeks postnatal. The review also sought to understand the types of interventions developed, format and delivery, outcomes measured and if cultural considerations had been incorporated.

METHODS

A scoping review of the research literature was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute framework. Five online databases were searched for relevant articles published in English from 2000 to 2021.

FINDINGS

Sixteen articles met the inclusion criteria. Three themes emerged: (1) viewing the fetus as separate from the mother, (2) focused activities on the maternal-infant relationship and (3) targeted educational interventions.

DISCUSSION

Providing focused activities and targeted education during the pre and postnatal periods support the development of the mother-infant relationship. Significantly, there was insufficient research that considered the influence of culture in supporting the mother-infant relationship.

CONCLUSION

Further research is required to develop interventions that include a diverse sample to ensure culturally appropriate activities can be integrated into care during pregnancy and/or the postnatal period provided by midwives.

A mixed method study to explore the maternal impact and outcomes of a specialist Building Attachment and Bonds Service (The BABS Study)

Our intent was to explore if maternal anxiety, depression, reflective functioning and level of attachment significantly changed after the Building Bonds and Attachment Service (BABS) Intervention. We measured outcomes for 46 at risk mothers via HADS; MAAS; MPAS and P-PRFQ. Our findings, triangulated with 32 semi structured interviews identified that BABS intervention made a significant difference to participants who were admitted during the antenatal period (Pregnant group: depression 9.63[CI:7.63-11.63; p < 0.001]; anxiety 9.40[CI: 7.56-11.24]; p < 0.001]; reflective functioning 30.78[CI:24.84-36.72; p < 0.001] and maternal attachment 8.78[CI:4.08-13.48]; p 0.001). Suicidal contemplation was prevented for two women. Our conclusions explained the service made a significant difference to the lives of mothers between baseline and post intervention for pregnant mothers with anxiety and depression who struggled to bond with their baby. Appropriate referral may help to increase accessibility to those who may benefit most. Further research needs to test if this care model would be acceptable to culturally diverse populations.

Effects of health promotion program on maternal attachment, parenting self-efficacy, infant development: a randomised controlled trial

This study was designed to test the efficacy of the health promotion program used on maternal-infant attachment, parental self-efficacy, infant development. For this experimental study parallel-group randomised control design was used. Data was collected from 64 mother and their infants. The intervention group received the health promotion program in addition to standard care, the control group received only the standard care. Family Information Form, Prenatal Attachment Inventory, Maternal Attachment Inventory, Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale, and Denver II Developmental Screening Tests were used for the collection of the data. Pearson χ2 test, Yates corrected χ2 test, independent t-test, and Mcnemar test were used for analysing the collected data. The groups on maternal-infant attachment (d:1.20 [CI:0.671-1.736]), parental self-efficacy (d:1.37 [CI:0.835 to 1.925]), and development delays of infants (p = .003, C.V: 0.41) were found to be statistically significant. Health promotion program positively influenced the maternal attachment, parental self-efficacy, the development of the infants.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Pregnancy and postpartum is a difficult period for mothers. Mothers need support. Parenting self-efficacy and maternal attachment are important for improving infant health. Infant should be supported to prevent developmental delays.What do the results of this study add? Supporting parenting self-efficacy, maternal attachment and infant development should be started during pregnancy and should be continued in the postpartum period.

The effect of Web-based preterm infant care training on mothers' self-confidence

The internet can be used as an alternative method in infant care education for mothers of preterm infants. This study was conducted to examine the effect of the Web-based infant care training program given to mothers of preterm infants on the self-confidence levels of mothers. This nonrandomized controlled study with a posttest design was conducted in Ministry of Health training and research hospital and university hospital. The study group comprised 84 mothers and their infants (intervention group: N = 42; control group: N = 42). Mothers with preterm infants in the intervention group participated in the Web-based program. The self-confidence of the mothers was evaluated before and after the training. The mothers' Pharis self-confidence scale mean scores were higher than the control group, but there was no significant difference. Web-based education program can be an alternative method that can be used in the education of mothers with preterm infants.

Effect of Infant Care Training on Maternal Bonding, Motherhood Self-Efficacy, and Self-Confidence in Mothers of Preterm Newborns

AIM

This study aims to evaluate the effect of infant care training on maternal bonding, motherhood self-efficacy, and self-confidence in mothers of preterm newborns and examine the relationship between them.

METHOD

The study was conducted experimentally with pre-test and post-test control groups in the Maternity Hospital. The population of the study consisted of late preterm newborns and their mothers (N = 81) who met the inclusion criteria of the study. Data was collected with an information form, a maternal bonding scale (MBS), a perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy scale (PMP-SE), and a Pharis self-confidence scale (PSCS). Mothers of the infants in the experimental group were given preterm infant care training as a nursing initiative.

RESULTS

In the study, the post-test MBS scores significantly increased in the experimental group, with a significant difference between all the sub-dimensions and the total scores of the PMP-SE post-test of mothers in both groups (p < 0.001). The post-test PSCS scores were significantly higher in the experimental group (p < 0.01). The correlation between MBS and PMP-SE (p < 0.05) mean scores of the mothers was positive, a correlation between PMP-SE and PSCS (p < 0.001) mean scores was positive and a correlation between PSCS and MBS (p < 0.05) mean scores was positive.

CONCLUSIONS

The existence of a directly proportional relationship between the variables of maternal bonding, motherhood self-efficacy, and self-confidence may mean that motherhood self-efficacy can be increased and motherhood self-confidence can be enhanced by supporting maternal bonding. Further studies starting from the prenatal period are recommended.

Relationship between prenatal and maternal attachment: a longitudinal study from Turkey

The healthy development of the attachment which starts in the prenatal period and continues after the birth strengthens, positively supports the newborn care and contributes to raising healthy individuals in the future. This study was carried out to determine the effect of mother-fetus attachment that develops during pregnancy on mother-infant attachment in the postpartum period. This descriptive, correlational and longitudinal study was conducted with 150 volunteer mothers who could be reached again within 1-4 months after birth. Data were collected by the Questionnaire Form, the Prenatal Attachment Inventory (PAI) and the Maternal Attachment Scale (MAS). When the relationship between participants' PAI (41.20 ± 11.35) and MAS (26.05 ± 5.13) point averages was examined, it was observed that there was a weak, positive and statistically significant relationship between the two scales (r = 0.304, p=.000). It was observed that there was a relationship between the attachment between pregnant woman and developing fetus and the maternal attachment in the postnatal period.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? Attachment is a process which is formed by an interaction between the mother and the infant that is satisfying and enjoyed by both sides. It provides a basis for the establishment of relationships of the infant with the outside world and for the psychological development of the infant.What the results of this study add? Effect of education on the readiness levels of primigravida women to hygienic care practices of the newborn with the use of QR code

The researcers planned this study to determine the effect of the education on the hygienic care of the newborn with the use of QR Code on readiness levels of primigravida women to hygienic care practices of the newborn. A total of 68 primigravida women constituted of this interventional study. After the intervention group completed their education on newborn care, mobile application and QR codes were introduced to the pregnant women. The control group received routine newborn care training. It was observed that the education of hygienic care to the newborn, which was provided to pregnant women with the use of QR Code, was effective on their readiness to care. Pediatric nurses can provide QR code supported training to prepare pregnant women for the hygienic care of the newborn.

Efficacy of a multimodal nursing intervention strategy in the process of becoming a mother: A randomized controlled trial

The lack of knowledge and skills for transitioning to motherhood places first-time mothers at greater risk of depression and stress, may lower their perceived self-efficacy and satisfaction with the maternal role, and potentially affects the mother-infant bond. The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of a multimodal nursing intervention (AMACOMPRI), based on Mercer's Becoming a Mother Theory, in supporting the process of becoming a mother in first-time mothers of term infants. This study was a parallel-group, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial with a 4-month postpartum follow-up. The outcome measures were the process of becoming a mother, functional social support, mother-infant bond, and perceived maternal self-efficacy. Sixty-six first-time mothers completed the study: 33 in the intervention group and 33 in the control group. The intervention was effective in supporting the process of becoming a mother, with a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.50) and higher scores on the Becoming-a-Mother Scale in the intervention group compared with the control group (intergroup difference 13.04 points; 95% confidence interval: 8.72-17.34). Participants in the intervention group demonstrated higher scores in functional social support, perceived maternal self-efficacy, and mother-infant bond. This study provides evidence for the efficacy of an innovative nursing intervention that supports the process of becoming a mother. Further testing of the intervention is required in different settings and first-time mothers of low and high risk newborns.

Parent-targeted postnatal educational interventions in low and middle-income countries: A scoping review and critical analysis

OBJECTIVES

To identify and map existing postnatal educational interventions targeting parents in low and middle-income countries. A secondary objective is to conduct a critical analysis of the strengths and limitations of the educational strategies used for parent-targeted postnatal education. Design & data sources: Using scoping review methodology, MedLine, CINAHL, and SCOPUS were searched in October 2017.

REVIEW METHODS

All studies published after 2000 reporting on educational interventions that targeted parents from the period of birth to 6 weeks postnatally in low and middle-income countries were included. Studies were excluded if they targeted healthcare professionals or were community interventions that spanned antenatal to postnatal care. Title, abstract and full-text screening was conducted by two reviewers.

RESULTS

We initially identified 9284 articles with 77 articles included after title, abstract and full-text screening. Most of the studies were quantitative (94%) with over half published after 2014. Most studies (61%) targeted a single newborn care education intervention, of which 75% targeted breastfeeding. Interventions used on average three different methods of implementation (e.g., verbal, written information, counselling). Interventions were provided in the hospital (76%), at home (23%), at a clinic/hospital (8%), and/or virtually through an eHealth intervention, including phone or text messages (12%). Maternal outcomes primarily included knowledge, self-efficacy, anxiety and stress while newborn outcomes primarily included exclusive breastfeeding, weight gain at follow-up, and morbidities. Positive changes were found to occur for reported maternal outcomes (89%) and newborn outcomes (56%).

CONCLUSIONS

Parent-targeted education varied in terms of educational topics covered, method and location of intervention, and outcomes examined. While the best strategies of implementing postnatal education interventions to parents in low and middle-income countries is yet to be determined, evidence suggests that current interventions had a positive impact on parents' outcomes using a combined approach. Further work is needed to evaluate the impact on newborn outcomes and to identify the most effective methods and timing of the interventions.

Increasing Confidence and Ability in Implementing Kangaroo Mother Care Method Among Young Mothers

Mothers giving birth to low birth weight babies (LBWBs) have low confidence in caring for their babies because they are often still young and may lack the knowledge, experience, and ability to care for the baby. This research aims to determine the effect of education about kangaroo mother care (KMC) on the confidence and ability of young mothers to implement KMC. The research methodology used was a controlled-random experimental approach with pre- and post-test equivalent groups of 13 mothers and their LBWBs in the intervention group and 13 mothers and their LBWBs in the control group. Data were collected via an instrument measuring young mothers' confidence, the validity and reliability of which have been tested with a resulting r value of .941, and an observation sheet on KMC implementation. After conducting the education, the confidence score of young mothers and their ability to perform KMC increased meaningfully. The score of confidence of young mothers before education was 37 (p = .1555: and the ability score for KMC Implementation before education was 9 (p = .1555). The median score of confidence of young mothers after education in the intervention group was 87 and in the control group was 50 (p = .001, 95% CI 60.36-75.56), and ability median score for KMC implementation after education in the intervention group was 16 and in the control group was 12 (p = .001, 95% CI 1.50-1.88). KMC education should be conducted gradually, and it is necessary to involve the family, in order for KMC implementation to continue at home. A family visit can be done for LBWBs to evaluate the ability of the young mothers to implement KMC.

The effect of educational package on functional status and maternal self-confidence of primiparous women in postpartum period: a randomized controlled clinical trial

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a training package on functional status and self-confidence of primiparous women in the postpartum period.

METHOD

This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 136 primiparous women who were referred to health centers in Tabriz, Iran, for their second postpartum care (10-15 days after delivery). These women were randomly assigned to education (n= 68) and control (n = 68) groups. The education group was provided with a face-to-face training session, three phone sessions, and a booklet. The control group received the routine postpartum care on days 1-3, 10-15 and 42-60. Participants completed the functional status and maternal self-confidence questionnaires before the interventio n and eight weeks postpartum. Independent t, chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used for data analysis.

RESULTS

No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of sociodemographic characteristics, except for infant's gender (p > .05). At six weeks after the intervention and by adjusting for baseline scores and infant's sex, mean scores of functional status (adjusted mean difference: 0.9; 95% CI: 0.8-1.03, p < .001) and maternal self-confidence (adjusted mean difference: 16.6; 95% CI: 13.8-19.3, p < .001) were significantly higher in the education group than in the control group.

CONCLUSION

This study showed that training women has a positive effect in increasing their self-confidence and improving their functional status.

Development and evaluation of a newborn care education programme in primiparous mothers in Nepal

BACKGROUND

the health and survival of newborns depend on high levels of attention and care from caregivers. The growth and development of some infants are unhealthy because of their mother's or caregiver's lack of knowledge or the use of inappropriate or traditional child-rearing practices that may be harmful.

OBJECTIVE

to develop a newborn care educational programme and evaluate its impact on infant and maternal health in Nepal.

DESIGN

a randomised controlled trial.

PARTICIPANTS

one hundred and forty-three mothers were randomly assigned to the intervention (n=69) and control (n=74) groups. Eligible participants were primiparous mothers who had given birth to a single, full-term, healthy infant, and were without a history of obstetric, medical, or psychological problems.

METHODS

prior to being discharged from the postnatal unit, the intervention group received our structured newborn care education programme, which consisted of one-on-one educational sessions lasting 10-15minutes each and one postpartum follow-up telephone support within two weeks after discharge, in addition to the hospital's routine general newborn care education. The control group received only the regular general newborn care education. Outcomes were measured by using Newborn care Knowledge Questionnaires, Karitane Parenting Confidence Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Adults and infant health and care status.

FINDINGS

the number of mothers attending the health centre due to the sickness of their babies was significantly decreased in the intervention group compared to the control group. Moreover, the intervention group had significant increases in newborn care knowledge and confidence, and decreases in anxiety, compared with the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

the structured newborn care education programme enhanced the infant and mother health. Moreover, it increased maternal knowledge of newborn care and maternal confidence; and reduced anxiety in primiparous mothers. Thus, this educational programme could be integrated into routine educational programs to promote maternal and infant well-being in Nepalese society.
