Abstract
Objectives This retrospective cohort study aimed to analyze volumes of craniomaxillofacial bone and masticatory muscles of young adults with bilateral idiopathic condylar resorption. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of 84 adults with bilateral idiopathic condylar resorption (BCR) and 48 adults with normal temporal-mandibular joint (TMJ) matched for age and sex (mean age, 23.2 ± 3.6 years). The volumes of craniomaxillofacial bone and masticatory muscles, as well as intercondylar angle were measured. Unpaired t-tests and Pearson correlation tests were applied to analyze the data. Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the association between bilateral condylar volume and volumes of craniomaxillofacial bone and masticatory muscles adjusted for age, sex, and disc status. Results Compared to the control group, the BCR group displayed significant decreased volumes of craniomaxillofacial bone (p < 0.001), craniomaxillofacial bone without mandible (p < 0.001), mandible (p < 0.001), mandible without mandibular condylar process (p < 0.001), bilateral masseter muscle (p < 0.001) and bilateral temporalis muscle (p < 0.001), as well as the intercondylar angle (p < 0.001). These variables were significantly correlated to the volume of mandibular condylar process (0.5< r < 0.8; p < 0.001). By linear regression analyses, significant associations were found for the bilateral condylar volume with craniomaxillofacial bone volume and mandible bone volume. Conclusions Young adults with BCR displayed smaller volumes of craniomaxillofacial skeleton and masticatory muscles, and smaller intercondylar angle than the normal patients. The craniofacial musculoskeletal volume and intercondylar angle are associated with mandibular condylar process volume.

Abstract
Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the maximum bilateral molar bite force and the Root Mean Square (RMS) Electromyography (EMG) index of the masticatory muscles in the maximum bilateral molar bite (MMBMax) of women with myogenic Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and asymptomatic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, composed of 86 women allocated to the TMD Group (n=43) and Control Group (n=43) diagnosis through the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. The maximum bilateral molar bite force was evaluated using a bite dynamometer and the RMS EMG index of the masticatory muscles (anterior temporalis, masseter) during 5 seconds of the MMBMax task. Student t-test was used for data comparison between accuracy of the bite force and RMS EMG of masticatory muscles during the MMBMax. Results: The maximum bilateral molar bite force showed high accuracy (AUC=0.99) for the diagnosis of women with myogenic TMD and asymptomatic women, and the RMS EMG index evaluated during the MMBMax showed a moderate level of accuracy for all masticatory muscles (AUC=0.70 to 0.75). Conclusion: The bilateral bite dynamometer with a surface EMG during bilateral bite can be used to diagnose TMD in young women.

Abstract
IntroductionMasticatory function is often impaired in patients with painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD) therefore more detailed studies on comminution and mixing ability are warranted in well-defined TMD patients with chronic myalgia. Moreover, there is a need to explore the correlation between any changes in perceived pain or fatigue in such patients and the masticatory function.Materials and methodsSelf-assessments using questionnaires regarding pain, oral health, jaw function, masticatory ability, fear of movement and psychosocial signs were answered by all the participants. A series of chewing tasks involving viscoelastic food and two-colored gum was performed. Optical imaging and analyzing was conducted. Bite force as well as characteristics of pain and fatigue were assessed.ResultsIn patients, the fragmented soft candy particles were less in number and had larger median of area and minimum Feret's diameter after standardized chewing compared to healthy individuals (P = 0.02). Surprisingly, the two-colored Hue-Check gum was less mixed by the healthy controls since they displayed a greater variance of the hue (P = 0.04). There were significant differences between the patients and the healthy controls in the self-assessed masticatory ability mainly regarding pain-related variables.ConclusionsObjectively, TMD patients with chronic myalgia exhibited an impaired masticatory performance with less efficiency in comminuting soft viscoelastic food compared to the pain-free healthy control group. There was an agreement between the patients' self-assessed masticatory ability and the efficiency of their masticatory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effects of adenoid hypertrophy (AH) and adenoidectomy on maximal bite force (MBF) in patients were evaluated by comparing them with healthy controls. METHODS A total of 118 children diagnosed with AH and undergoing adenoidectomy (Group A), and healthy controls (Group B) were included. The MBF and nasopharyngeal airway passage distance (NAPD) were recorded. RESULTS There was a correlation between NAPD and MBF at the beginning of the study (r = -0.675 and p < 0.001). The initial mean MBF of Groups A and B were 318.37 ± 70.76 N and 344.04 ± 64.14 N, respectively (p = 0.041). However, there was no significant difference between the groups due to the increase in the MBF of Group A at 12 months (p = 0.165). CONCLUSION The MBF may be negatively affected in proportion to decreased NAPD, and it could also be an indicator for monitoring the status of children with AH.

Abstract
Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is increasingly used in treating masticatory muscle pain disorder; however, safe doses and reinjection intervals still need to be established. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the degree and duration of the impairment of masticatory muscle performance. Fifty-seven subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one of which received BoNT-A first (n = 28) while the other received saline first (n = 29), with the cross-over being in week 16, and a total follow-up period of 32 weeks. A total dose of 50 U of BoNT-A was injected in the masseter and temporal muscles bilaterally. Electromyographic (EMG) activity and bite forces were assessed. A significant reduction in EMG activity was observed up to week 18 (p ≤ 001), with total recovery at week 33. A significant reduction in maximum bite force was observed up to week 11 (p ≤ 005), with total recovery at week 25. In conclusion, when treating masticatory muscle pain disorder with 50 U of BoNT-A, a reinjection interval of 33 weeks can be considered safe since the recovery of muscle function occurs by that time.

Validation of Experimental and Finite Element Biomechanical Evaluation of Human Cadaveric Mandibles. LUBRICANTS 2022. Abstract
Background: Biomechanical analysis of human mandible is important not only to understand mechanical behavior and structural properties, but also to diagnose and develop treatment options for mandibular disorders. Therefore, the objective of this research was to generate analytical and experimental data on mandibles, construct custom 3D models, and compare the analytically derived maximum strains with strain gage data in five areas of interest for each mandible. Methods: We investigated the surface strains in the cadaveric human mandibles under different configurations of cyclic compressive loads in an experimental setting and compared these experimental strain data with results derived from computational finite element analysis (FEA), accurately replicating the experiments. Strains on the surface of each mandible were measured with strain gauges, and subsequently a subject-specific finite element (FE) volume mesh was generated from computed tomography (CT) scans of each mandible. Strain patterns of each mandible were derived from the FEA simulating the experimental setup and matched with the experimental data. Findings: Analysis of experimental data showed that strain as measured at the condylar locations was significantly different from those at other locations on the mandible, and that the sex and age of the subject did not have a significant correlation with the strain. Comparing the FE numerical predictions with the experimental data, we found a good statistical correlation and statistical agreement between in-vitro measurements and FE results. Interpretation: The study demonstrates that our methodology of generating subject-specific FE models is a valid and accurate, non-invasive method to evaluate the complex biomechanical behavior of human mandibles.

Abstract
Mandibular range of motion and bite force are indispensable variables for the evaluation of mandibular function. There are a variety of medical and dental conditions that can negatively affect mandibular function. Values for mandibular range of motion (i.e., active and passive maximum interincisal mouth opening, protrusion, and laterotrusion) and anterior maximum voluntary bite force (AMVBF) in healthy children and adolescents can help in recognizing temporomandibular dysfunction. In this longitudinal study, 169 healthy children aged 6-18 years were included. They were examined at four time points over 1 year. Mixed model analysis was performed to produce growth curves of mandibular range of motion and AMVBF. Average active maximum interincisal mouth opening was significantly higher in boys with 50.0 mm compared to 47.8 mm in girls. Boys also had a significantly higher AMVBF than girls with an average of 169.0 N versus 140.0 N, respectively. Growth curves of active and passive maximum interincisal mouth opening showed an increase with age, albeit levelling off through puberty. The growth curves of AMVBF in girls reach a plateau phase at ages 12-14 years, after which the curve descends; in boys, the AMVBF tended to increase up to 18 years of age, although a slow-down after 14 years of age was noted.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate BMI changes following a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) diagnosis. The Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort from 2002 to 2015 was used. In Study I, 1808 patients with TMJD (TMJD I) were matched with 7232 participants in comparison group I. The change in BMI was compared between the TMJD I and comparison I groups for 1 year. In study II, 1621 patients with TMJD (TMJD II) were matched with 6484 participants in comparison group II participants. The change in BMI was compared between the TMJD II and comparison II groups for 2 years. In Study I, the BMI change was not associated with TMJD. In Study II, the BMI change was associated with TMJD in the interaction of the linear mixed model (p = 0.003). The estimated value (EV) of the linear mixed model was −0.082. The interaction was significant in women < 60 years old, women ≥ 60 years old, and the obese I category. TMJD was not associated with BMI changes after 1–2 years in the overall population. In women and obese patients, TMJD was associated with a decrease in BMI after 2 years.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM How axial displacement may be affected by the mechanical properties and internal discrepancy of a cement-retained implant-supported prosthesis is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the difference in internal discrepancy and axial displacement according to the prosthesis material in cement-retained prostheses splinting nonparallel implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) titanium abutments were fabricated for a vertically placed implant and a 15-degree tilted implant. Three types of prostheses, in zirconia, cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy, and polymethylmethacrylate resin (PMMA), were fabricated (n=10). The internal discrepancy between the CAD-CAM titanium abutment and the prosthesis was measured by using the replica technique. After luting with an interim cement, they were mounted in Type IV gypsum. The specimens were cyclic loaded, and axial displacement of the prosthesis was measured after 3, 10, 100, and 106 cycles. The internal discrepancy and cumulative axial displacement were assessed by using a 3-way analysis of variance and repeated measures analysis of variance (α=.05). RESULTS The internal discrepancy of the prosthesis did not differ based on the prosthesis material (P=.869); however, it was significantly different based on the measurement location, with the occlusal discrepancy (224 ±29 μm) being greater than the axial discrepancy (21 ±10 μm) (P<.05). Implants with an angled placement exhibited less axial displacement than implants with vertical placement (P<.05). The PMMA prosthesis demonstrated significantly greater axial displacement than the zirconia or Co-Cr prostheses (P<.05), which were similar (P=.623). CONCLUSIONS Prostheses made with high-elastic moduli materials exhibited less axial displacement than PMMA prostheses, even though the internal discrepancy was not different. Moreover, vertically placed implants presented a greater axial displacement of the prosthesis than implants with angled placement.

Methods Cylindrical posts of 1.5 mm in diameter cemented to the roots of human maxillary canines presented a length of 15 mm, cervical diameter of 5–5.5 mm in the mesiodistal direction, and 7–7.5 mm in the vestibule-palatal direction. The groups studied were: Group I—10 glass fiber posts; Group II—10 human dentin posts; Group III—10 bovine dentin posts (self-adhesive resin cement); and Group IV—10 bovine dentin posts (resin-modified glass-ionomer cements). The coronal part of tooth was restored with a standardized core build-up using composite. All of the groups were submitted to a compression force test and the resistance to fracture was verified using a universal testing machine. The fracture pattern was likewise evaluated.
Results The values of resistance to fracture were: 723.3N in group I, 561.5N in group II, 556.6N in group III, and, 613.27N in group IV. However, no statistically significant difference was observed among the groups. The fractures in groups I and II were most commonly found in the middle/apical third and were considered irreparable. For restored teeth in group III, half of the fractures appeared in the cervical third and were reparable. In group IV, all of the fractures were reparable, with the majority in the cervical thirds. Conclusion Bovine dentin can be used as intraradicular post to substitute human dentin and glass fiber posts. The greater the malleability of the post, the greater the chances of survival of the teeth when subjected to fracture testing.

Abstract
Bite forces are studied in order to understand a wide range of factors pertaining to the mastication system. Various strain gauge transducers have been employed to measure bite forces, with several descriptions of these available in the literature; unfortunately, many reports provide insufficient detail to enable accurate reproduction. The aim of this project was to develop a bite force transducer with the capability of measuring maximum voluntary bite forces between individual opposing tooth surfaces. Furthermore, in an attempt to address the issue of vague device descriptions in the available literature, a detailed account of the transducer development has been included. A novel strain gauge transducer was designed and built. Bite forces of forty individuals were measured to verify the capabilities and clinical application of the device.

Abstract
Endocrowns represent a conservative and esthetic restorative alternative to full coverage crowns. They can be constructed using various CAD/CAM materials that can provide a modulus of elasticity similar to that of teeth. The ability to use of such materials in composite blocks that can be easily repaired is also an advantage, provided appropriate bonding performance is ensured. This study, therefore, evaluated the marginal gap and fracture resistance of two CAD/CAM endocrown materials using two bonding protocols. Thirty-two mandibular molars were evaluated in two groups based on the material type: a Cerasmart group (GC America Inc; n = 16) acting as the control and a Ceramill COMP group (Amann Girrbach, Germany; n = 16). These groups were then classified according to the bonding protocol used: a total-etch bonding protocol (n = 8) and a self-etch bonding protocol (n = 8) implemented using RelyX ultimate adhesive resin cement (3M ESPE). The samples were then subjected to aging by simulating a 1-year thermo-mechanical process. The marginal gap results were statistically insignificant across the material and bonding protocol groups before thermo-mechanical aging. Thermo-mechanical aging significantly reduced the marginal gap distance for Ceramill COMP endocrowns cemented using the total-etch protocol (p = 0.002). No statistically significant difference was recorded for the fracture resistance in either the material or bonding protocol groups (p ≥ 0.05). Both materials and bonding protocols can, therefore, be used in the posterior region providing conservative treatment, adequate marginal gap and fracture resistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this in vitro study was to investigate fracture load, fracture types, and impact of chewing simulation of human molars restored with 3D printed indirect polyetheretherketone (PEEK) inlays and compare these with milled indirect PEEK inlays, direct resin composite fillings, and sound teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 112 molars with form congruent class I cavities were restored with (n = 16/group) 3D printed indirect PEEK inlays via fused layer manufacturing (FLM): (1) Essentium PEEK (ESS), (2) KetaSpire PEEK MS-NT1 (KET), (3) VESTAKEEP i4 G (VES), (4) VICTREX PEEK 450G (VIC), (5) milled indirect PEEK inlays JUVORA Dental Disc 2 (JUV), and (6) direct resin composite fillings out of Tetric EvoCeram (TET). Sound teeth (7) acted as positive control group. Half of the specimens of each group (n = 8) were treated in a chewing simulator combined with thermal cycling (1.2 million × 50 N; 12,000 × 5 °C/55 °C). Fracture load and fracture types of all molars were determined. Statistical analyses using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and two-way ANOVA with partial eta squared (ηp2) followed by Scheffé post hoc test, chi square test and Weibull modulus m with 95% confidence interval were computed (p < 0.05). RESULTS ESS and TET demonstrated the lowest fracture load with a minimum of 956 N, whereas sound molars showed the highest values of up to 2981 N. Chewing simulation indicated no impact (p = 0.132). With regard to Weibull modulus, KET presented a lower value after chewing simulation than JUV, whereas TET had the highest value without chewing simulation. All indirect restorations revealed a tooth fracture (75-100%), direct resin composite fillings showed a restoration fracture (87.5%), and 50% of the sound teeth fractured completely or had cusp fractures. CONCLUSIONS All 3D printed and milled indirect PEEK inlays as well as the direct resin composite fillings presented a higher fracture load than the expected physiological and maximum chewing forces. CLINICAL RELEVANCE 3D printing of inlays out of PEEK via FLM provided promising results in mechanics, but improvements in terms of precision and esthetics will be required to be practicable in vivo to represent an alternative dental material.

Abstract
AIM Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) refer to functional disorders of the masticatory system, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and masticatory muscles. The main objective of this study was to determine whether and to what extent temporomandibular disorders (TMD) affect the maximum bite force (MBF). METHODS The present study included subjects with and without temporomandibular disorder. The presence of TMD was assessed by means of the Helkimo clinical dysfunction index analysis. We measured the maximum bite pressure (MBP) and occlusal contact area (OCA) by means of a Fuji Prescale Pressure measurement film. Based on the MBP and OCA values obtained, MBF values were determined. RESULTS The MBF values were significantly lower in patients with TMD compared to subjects without TMD (P Conclusion: TMDs have a significant impact on MBF and masticatory muscle action potential. More research is needed to determine the impact of reduced maximum bite force on the functional efficiency of the masticatory system.

Abstract
The reported failure rate for full veneer crowns of canine teeth of dogs is suboptimal, particularly in teeth with naturally poor retentive features, such as those with low height/diameter (H/D) ratios or high convergence angles (CAs). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the application of axial grooves in an effort to develop a crown preparation design that enhances the retention of full veneer crowns in dogs. Crown dislodgment testing was performed on cast alloy dies of canine teeth with unfavorable retention features (low H/D and high CA) prepared with (n = 14) and without axial grooves (n = 15) to evaluate the force required to dislodge a cemented full veneer crown. The crown/die units were secured within a universal testing machine and a load was applied at the 45° oblique direction from distal to mesial to replicate the vector encountered during biting-pulling action. The maximum force required to cause crown dislodgment was recorded for each crown. Statistical analysis revealed a significant increase in force required for crown dislodgment when axial grooves were included in the crown preparation design ( P < .001). Crown retention is improved in canine teeth with otherwise poor retention features when axial grooves are made in the labial and palatal/lingual walls during crown preparation.

Abstract
PURPOSE Bite force has been studied as representative of functional indices of mastication and its value may have diagnostic significance in disorders of the musculoskeletal system of facial bones. This study aimed to evaluate bite force in adolescents with and without orthodontic needs considering presence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) as well as anthropometry: craniofacial dimensions and body mass index (BMI). METHODS A total of 80 subjects were screened (61 females, 19 males; 18 ± 3 years old). Unilateral molar bite force was measured using a digital dynamometer with a fork thickness of 12 mm. Direct anthropometry was used to quantify craniofacial measurements. Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN-DHC) and the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) were used to classify samples according to malocclusion and to TMD, respectively. Data were analyzed using normality tests, Mann-Whitney U test, and multiple linear regression analyses with stepwise backward elimination, controlling for the presence of malocclusion and TMD (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS The cephalic index was greater in females with malocclusion and the longitudinal cranial diameter was reduced in females with malocclusion. BMI was not different between normal and malocclusion groups for either gender. Bite force was negatively related with vertical dimension of the face, and positively related with facial width and facial index. The model explained 32% of bite force variability, considering the sample size (coefficient of determination R 2 = 0.324). CONCLUSIONS Even when orthodontic needs and TMD signs and symptoms are present, stronger bite force is still observed in males and in subjects with smaller anterior facial heights and wider facial widths.

Abstract
PURPOSE Due to the bite force importance in functionality of the masticatory system, this study aimed to characterize it in dolichofacial and brachyfacial individuals. METHODS A sample comprised by 190 patients was divided into two groups: 90 severe dolichofacial, and 100 severe brachyfacial individuals classified according to the VERT index and the face height ratio (Jarabak quotient). Bite force was measured by using an adjusted digital dynamometer and proper methodology. RESULTS The sample met the parametric assumptions and presented statistical significance when right and left sides of dolichofacial and brachyfacial individuals were compared. However, within the same group, no differences between the left and right sides were found. Generally, bite force was higher for male, left masticator, age between 41-50 years, weighing over 100kg and between 1.81 and 1.90m tall. CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of this cross-sectional study, it was possible to conclude that the bite force in severe brachyfacial individuals was significantly higher than in severe dolichofacial individuals, being influenced by gender, weight and height.

Abstract
The degree of interplay among variables in dental implant treatment presents a challenge to randomized clinical trials attempting to answer questions in a timely, unbiased, and economically feasible fashion. Further adding complexity to the different scenarios is the varied implant designs and related bone response, area of implantation, implant bulk material, restoration, abutments and related screws, fixation mode (screwed, fixed, or a combination), and horizontal implant-abutment matching geometry. This article critically appraises the most common mechanical testing methods used to characterize the implant-prostheses complex. It attempts to provide insight into the process of construction of an informed database of clinically relevant questions regarding preclinical evaluation of implant biomechanics and failure mechanisms. The use of single load to failure, fatigue life, fatigue limit, and step-stress accelerated life testing is discussed with emphasis on their deliverables, weaknesses, and strengths. Fractographic analysis and challenges in the correlation between laboratory- and in-service-produced failures of dental ceramics, resin composites, and titanium are introduced. In addition, examples are presented of mechanical characterization studies used in our laboratory to assess some implant-supported rehabilitation variables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chewing is composed of structures that must be balanced to achieve optimal function and bite force is one of the components of this function. AIM To analyze the bite force of candidates for bariatric surgeries. METHOD Was used surface electromyography Miotool 200/400 (Miotec® , Porto Alegre/RS, Brazil) coupled to bite load cell, SDS1000 sensor, to record the maximum force reading during the execution of the bite. The device was integrated with software Miograph 2.0. Inclusion criteria were: morbidly obese patients regardless of gender, age 20-40 years, no absences and/or important dental changes and candidates for gastroplasty. Were studied the bites in left and right lateral position and their intensity measured in kilogram force (kgf). The exclusion criterion was that of patients who had facial deformities and/or occlusal position preventing any collection. RESULTS Were analyzed 39 patients (59 % women), mean age 27.1 (+/-5.7). They had anterior bite force in average 9.1 kgf (min 1.3 and max 22.9 kgf - +/-5.2 ); left side with average 16.3 kgf (min 1.5 and max 55.6 kgf - +/-11.9); right side with average of 14.0 kgf (min 2.3 and max 45.3 kgf - +/-9.4 ). CONCLUSION The bite force was inferior to those described for the general population and the gender did not have any influence on it.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy on occlusal contact area, occlusal pressure and bite force in temporomandibular disorder patients. PATIENTS AND METHOD Twenty patients (14 women, six men, mean age 33.1 ± 3.8 years) diagnosed with myofascial pain according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorder (RDC/TMD) participated in the study. Twenty healthy individuals, matched in age and gender, served as a control group. Low-level laser was applied to the mastication muscles three times per week, for a total of 10 sessions. The mandibular mobility range was evaluated. The maximum bite force, occlusal contact area and occlusal pressure were measured bilaterally with a dental pre-scale before and after treatment. All variables were analyzed descriptively. Changes in the masticatory muscle tenderness, mandibular movements, maximum bite force, occlusal contact area and occlusal pressure were compared by paired-sample Student's t-tests. RESULTS There was a significant increase in the pressure pain threshold of the examined muscles. Mandibular movements were significantly improved in all patients. There was also a significant decrease in pain by palpation after laser exposure. However, no significant change was found in the maximum bite force, occlusal contact area or occlusal pressure after the treatment and also the values after the treatment were still significantly lower than those of the healthy individuals. CONCLUSION This particular type of LLLT is effective at relieving pain but does not provide physical improvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Curved osteotomy of a prominent mandibular angle is widely used in narrowing the width of the lower face, but its influence on occlusal force has not been evaluated. METHODS The maximum occlusal forces of five different teeth areas in 20 consecution patients with an average age of 26.5 years were studied. The examinations were performed both before the operation and 6 months afterward. RESULTS The values of maximum occlusal force had reached the preoperative levels or slightly above for the incisor teeth, bilateral premolar teeth, and bilateral molar teeth 6 months after operation. There were no significant differences between the levels before the operation and 6 months afterward (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION According to the study findings, curved osteotomy of the prominent mandibular angle had no long-term harmful effects on occlusal force.

Abstract
Parafunctional habits, such as bruxism, are contributory factors for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the maximal bite force (MBF) in the presence of TMD and bruxism (TMDB) in young adults. Twelve women (mean age 21.5 years) and 7 men (mean age 22.4 years), composed the TMDB group. Ten healthy women and 9 men (mean age 21.4 and 22.4 years, respectively) formed the control group. TMD symptoms were evaluated by a structured questionnaire and clinical signs/symptoms were evaluated during clinical examination. A visual analogical scale (VAS) was applied for stress assessment. MBF was measured with a gnatodynamometer. The subjects were asked to bite 2 times with maximal effort, during 5 seconds, with a rest interval of about one minute. The highest values were considered. The data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilks W-test, descriptive statistics, paired or unpaired t tests or Mann-Whitney tests when indicated, and Fisher's exact test (p < 0.05). TMDB women presented lower values of MBF as compared to those presented by TMDB men and by the control group. MBF for TMDB men was similar to that of the control group. The proportion of TMDB women with muscle pain and facial/teeth/head pain upon waking up was significantly higher than that of men. Control women presented significantly lower stress scores than the others. It was concluded that MBF was reduced in TMDB women, as they presented more signs and symptoms. Men presented higher MBF values than women, but TMD and bruxism did not significantly decrease MBF. Stress was not an influencing factor for TMD and bruxism in men.

Abstract
Maximum voluntary bite force has often been studied as an indicator of the functional state of the masticatory system. Bilateral, as well as unilateral, methods have been used to determine bite force. Only a few studies have compared the outcomes of both methods. The aim of this study was to measure bite force and jaw-muscle activity during bilateral as well as unilateral maximum clenching in a large number of healthy subjects, so that the results could be compared. In a group of 81 dentate subjects we observed an average bilateral bite force of 569 N. The average unilateral bite force was significantly lower, being 430 N (right) and 429 N (left). Masseter and anterior temporal muscle activities were also significantly lower during unilateral clenching as compared with bilateral clenching. The masseter muscles showed no difference in activity between the ipsilateral side and the contralateral side during unilateral clenching. In contrast, the activity of the anterior temporal muscle on the ipsilateral side was significantly higher than on the contralateral side. Thus, the change in the forces acting on the jaw during unilateral clenching compared with bilateral clenching leads to a different response in the temporal muscles than in the masseter muscles.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate molar bite force (BF) magnitude and its correlation to the signs of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), gender, weight, height and age in 101 students ranging in age from 6 to 18 years (32 boys/21 girls with mixed dentition and 23 boys/25 girls with permanent dentition). TMD clinical signs were evaluated using the Craniomandibular Index (CMI), and two subscales, the Dysfunction Index (DI) and the Palpation Index (PI). BF was determined with a pressurized tube connected to a sensor (MPX5700-Motorola SPS). anova, Tukey's test, and Pearson's and Spearman's coefficients were evaluated. BF was higher in the permanent dentition (P < 0.05). There was no difference in BF between genders within the groups, but boys with permanent dentition had higher values than children with mixed dentition (P < 0.05). The girls with permanent dentition presented negative correlation in BF with PI and CMI (P < 0.05). BF was positively correlated with weight, height and age in the permanent dentition group (P < 0.05). It was concluded that BF increased from mixed to permanent dentition, with an assumed enhancing influence of body variables and ageing. The TMD signs in older girls were correlated to decreasing BF, suggesting an influence of muscle tenderness preventing subjects from exerting maximum BF.

Abstract
Individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are expected to have decreased maximum bite forces (MBF). This way, this study compared the MBF in subjects with TMD to a control group and also evaluated its association with age, gender, height and weight. Forty healthy adults with complete natural dentition divided into four groups according to gender and presence or absence of TMD signs/symptoms (based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria RDC) underwent a MBF test with a gnathodynamometer in molar and incisal areas. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test (p=0.05), and the relationship between age, gender, weight, height and MBF was verified by Pearson's correlation test. There were no differences in MBF results between TMD and control groups (p>0.05). Female subjects exhibited lower MBF than male and MBF for the anterior area was lower than that for posterior area (p<0.05). Significant correlation was found between MBF and weight in TMD subjects (p<0.05), except for the anterior area in female subjects. There was a positive correlation between MBF and height in TMD male subjects (p<0.05). Within the limitations of this study, it is possible to conclude that bite force was not affected by TMD. Correlation between MBF and weight in TMD subjects and between MBF and height in TMD male subjects was observed.

Abstract
Background Vertical facial pattern may be related to the direction of pull of the masticatory muscles, yet its effect on occlusal force and elastic deformation of the mandible still is unclear. This study tested whether the variation in vertical facial pattern is related to the variation in maximum occlusal force (MOF) and medial mandibular flexure (MMF) in 51 fully-dentate adults. Methods Data from cephalometric analysis according to the method of Ricketts were used to divide the subjects into three groups: Dolichofacial (n = 6), Mesofacial (n = 10) and Brachyfacial (n = 35). Bilateral MOF was measured using a cross-arch force transducer placed in the first molar region. For MMF, impressions of the mandibular occlusal surface were made in rest (R) and in maximum opening (O) positions. The impressions were scanned, and reference points were selected on the occlusal surface of the contralateral first molars. MMF was calculated by subtracting the intermolar distance in O from the intermolar distance in R. Data were analysed by ANCOVA (fixed factors: facial pattern, sex; covariate: body mass index (BMI); alpha = 0.05). Results No significant difference of MOF or MMF was found among the three facial patterns (P = 0.62 and P = 0.72, respectively). BMI was not a significant covariate for MOF or MMF (P > 0.05). Sex was a significant factor only for MOF (P = 0.007); males had higher MOF values than females. Conclusion These results suggest that MOF and MMF did not vary as a function of vertical facial pattern in this Brazilian sample.

Abstract
The elastic modulus of the restorative material is important in restoring endodontically treated teeth. This study aimed to compare the fracture resistance and failure patterns of 90 mandibular molars restored using resin composites with or without fiber posts, with respect to the number of residual cavity walls. Five restoration types were performed corresponding to different wall defects (groups 1-5). Groups were divided in two subgroups corresponding to the use or absence of fiber posts. Teeth were loaded and resistance of specimens was measured as the axial compressive load to cause fracture and macroscopic fracture patterns were observed. One way ANOVA revealed a significant difference in fracture resistance (p < 0.001). Tukey post hoc test also revealed significant differences between groups as samples restored with fiber posts exhibited mostly restorable fractures. It was concluded that the resistance of endodontically treated mandibular molars restored with composite resins is mainly affected by the number of residual walls. Using fiber-reinforced posts optimized fracture patterns.

Abstract
Mastication is a complex process that involves activities of the facial muscles, the elevator and suprahyoidal muscles, and the tongue. These activities result in patterns of rhythmic mandibular movements, food manipulation, and the crushing of food between the teeth. Saliva facilitates mastication by moistening food particles, making a bolus, and assisting swallowing, whereas food consistency modifies masticatory forces, the mandibular jaw movements, the duration of the mastication cycle, and the number of cycles preceding the first swallow. Jaw elevator EMG activity research shows a clear relation between muscular activity and food properties. The teeth, masticatory muscles, and temporomandibular joints are also important because together they form the mechanism by which the food particles are fragmented. Hard and dry foods require more chewing cycles and a longer time in the mouth until swallowing for sufficient breakdown to take place and for enough saliva to be added to form a coherent bolus safe enough for swallowing. Product characteristics, the amount of saliva, dentition, and bite force affect the chewing performance. This study presents an update and synopsis of the effects of saliva, food, dentition, muscle force, and temporomandibular disorders on the masticatory process.
