Abstract
Background Patients with lung cancer often experience high levels of pain and recurrent pain episodes after thoracoscopic surgery, compromising their adherence to rehabilitation exercises and quality of life. Pain catastrophizing is defined as an exaggerated and negative mindset towards actual or anticipated pain and is one of the significant factors influencing pain. To date, prior investigations on pain catastrophizing have predominantly employed variable-centered approaches, focusing on broader population levels while neglecting individual specificity. Latent profile analysis represents an individual-centered data analysis method that can accurately identify distinct phenotypic subgroups and deeply analyze the characteristics of each subgroup. This enables clinicians to identify high-risk patients early and provide precision interventions to reduce pain catastrophizing and ultimately alleviate postoperative pain burden. Stratification-guided interventions play a crucial role in treating patients with pain catastrophizing, aligning with the principles of precision medicine. Methods 409 patients were included in this cross-sectional study. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was employed to discern distinct classes of pain catastrophizing among these patients. Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and multinomial logistic regression were conducted to analyze the factors influencing the different pain catastrophizing profiles among patients following thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery. Results Three distinct latent classes of pain catastrophizing were identified, Class1, labeled "Mild Pain Catastrophizing-Rumination Type"(26.2% of participants), Class2, referred to as "Moderate Pain Catastrophizing-Ruminative Exaggerative Type"(33.2%), Class3, designated as "Severe Pain Catastrophizing-Ruminative Helpless Exaggerative Type"(40.6%). Unordered multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that factors influencing mild pain catastrophizing included fatigue, perception of social support, marital status, primary caregiver, tumor location, and clinical stage. In contrast, factors influencing moderate pain catastrophizing included fatigue, perception of social support, marital status, education level, primary caregiver, and clinical stage (P < 0.05). Conclusion Three distinct patterns of pain catastrophizing were identified in patients following lung cancer surgery, each exhibiting unique classification characteristics. Healthcare professionals should promptly identify individuals at high risk for pain catastrophizing and develop targeted interventions that address physiological, psychological, and social factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Chronic pain is often accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue and sleep disturbance, and these symptoms all correlate with neuroimmune activation. However, their relation to one another on a neuroimmune axis remains elusive. Based on a recent review, cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) seem to be generally upregulated in patients with chronic pain compared to controls, disregarding pain type. Some of these have the possilibity of altering blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. Therefore, cytokine levels in serum and CSF, as well as BBB permeability, were measured in a cohort of patients suffering from either degenerative disc disease (DDD), lumbar disc herniation (LDH) or osteoarthritis (OA). In this exploratory study, we were interested in whether cytokines in the serum or CSF are associated with sleep disturbance or fatigue, with special consideration of the effect of BBB permeability, and whether functional clusters can be found among these cytokines. METHOD One-hundred-twenty patients with DDD/LDH/OA, all awaiting surgery, were included. Blood and CSF were collected on the day of surgery. Pain was measured with a visual analog scale 0-100 mm, sleep disturbance was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and fatigue was measured using the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI). A 92-protein multiplex panel (OLINK, Sweden) was used to analyze cytokine expression in serum and CSF, respectively. CSF-serum albumin quotient was measured using ELISA. Non-parametric statistics were used for univariate analyses, and a false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.10 was considered statistically significant. Bonferroni correction was applied to all multivariable protein analyses to obtain conservative effect estimates. MAIN RESULTS There was an association between BBB permeability and serum-CSF dynamics: thirty-one cytokines showed significant CSF-serum correlation, and BBB permeability was significantly correlated to the quotients of 35 cytokines and to the CSF levels of 11 cytokines. Several cytokines were negatively correlated to both pain at rest and general fatigue. No correlations were found between sleep disturbance and cytokines. Network analyses of serum and CSF cytokines that were correlated with fatigue revealed functional clusters in both compartments. Anxiety, depression, and pain during rest were important regressors for sleep disturbance with an R2 = 0.41. In addition to depression and pain during rest, CSF levels of CCL25 was a significant regressor regarding general fatigue, with an R2 = 0.47. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION In this exploratory study of immune profiles in chronic pain cohorts awaiting surgery, the importance of BBB dynamics on serum-CSF cytokine dynamics, and to a lesser extent on central levels of cytokines, is highlighted. Surprisingly, there were no associations between any cytokines in serum or CSF and sleep disturbance, despite a high prevalence of clinically significantly disturbed sleep. In contrast, several associations between general fatigue and cytokine levels in both serum and CSF were found. Cytokines of note are CXCL11 and CCL25 in the CSF, especially because of their direct functional association. CXCL11 has been found to exert neuroprotective effects in animal models, while CCL25 is known as a proinflammatory cytokine and is the only cytokine to fall out as a significant negative contributor to degree of fatigue. While causality cannot be addressed, the negative correlation between CCL25 and fatigue in both univariate and multivariate analyses implies that neuroimmune activity might have an ameliorating effect on the degree of fatigue. This study further adds to existing evidence that centrally acting cytokines are associated with severity of symptomatology, and highlights that pain and fatigue seem to have slightly different cytokine profiles. Sleep disturbance needs to be further addressed, ideally using both subjective and objective assessment methods. CCL25 and CXCL11 are interesting biomarkers for future research on pain and associated symptoms.

Abstract
AIM Fatigue is a common health problem in older adults. Chronic pain is associated with fatigue. However, the longitudinal association between chronic pain and the incidence of subjective fatigue among community-dwelling older adults remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between chronic pain and subjective fatigue using prospective data. METHODS The study included 2060 community-dwelling older adults (age 70.5 ± 6.4 years; male: n = 944) without subjective fatigue at baseline. Chronic pain and other data were assessed at baseline. Subjective fatigue incidence was investigated at the follow-up examination 2.5 years from baseline. RESULTS In total, 389 (18.9%) reported chronic low back pain, 322 (15.6%) reported chronic knee pain at baseline, and 342 (16.6%) reported subjective fatigue at follow-up examination. A logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio for the incidence of subjective fatigue in participants with chronic low back pain had a higher odds ratio for the incidence of subjective fatigue compared to participants without chronic low back pain (odds ratio = 1.71, 95% confidence interval = 1.29-2.26). Chronic knee pain had a higher odds ratio for the incidence of subjective fatigue compared to participants without chronic knee pain (odds ratio = 1.63, 95% confidence interval = 1.21-2.20). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that chronic low back pain and knee pain increase the risk of subjective fatigue incidence. These findings emphasize the contribution of chronic pain to fatigue among older adults. Therefore, intervention studies are required to prevent subjective fatigue in participants with chronic pain. Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple Osteochondromas (MO) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by the presence of numerous benign bone tumours, known as osteochondromas. Within the spectrum of debilitating symptoms associated with MO, pain is recognized as a major problem. Interestingly, our clinical observations suggest that fatigue is also a significant concern but has merely been touched upon in MO literature. This study aims to (1) assess the level of pain and fatigue in adult patients with MO; (2) compare fatigue in MO to healthy subjects and patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA); (3) identify associated variables for pain and fatigue in patients with MO. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 353 adult MO patients completed a survey with validated questionnaires on pain, fatigue and psychosocial factors. Pain and fatigue were assessed with the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and fatigue was also measured with the Checklist Individual Strength (CIS). Fatigue (CIS) was compared with reference scores of healthy subjects and patients with RA, using a one-sample t-test. Multiple linear regression models for pain and fatigue were developed using a-priori selected independent variables based on a theoretical framework (ICF-model). RESULTS Pain was reported by 87.8% (NRS = 3.19±2.6) and fatigue by 90.4% (NRS = 4.1±2.6) of patients with MO. Fatigue scores for MO (CIS = 84.1±15.3) were significantly higher (p<0.001) compared to reference scores of healthy subjects and patients with RA. The multivariable analysis for pain provided a final regression model with six variables (R2 = 0.445, p<0.001) of which fear avoidance beliefs and fatigue had the strongest association. For the fatigue models NRS (R2 = 0.455, p<0.001) and CIS (R2 = 0.233, p<0.001), the strongest associations were found with anxiety and depression respectively. CONCLUSIONS Pain and fatigue are highly prevalent in patients with MO. Fatigue is significantly higher compared to healthy subjects and patients with RA. Several variables associated with pain and fatigue have been identified that could help improve multidisciplinary treatment plans.

Abstract
Fatigue, an increasingly acknowledged symptom in various chronic diseases, has garnered heightened attention, during the medical era of bio-psycho-social model. Its persistence not only significantly compromises an individual's quality of life but also correlates with chronic organ damage. Surprisingly, the intricate relationship between fatigue and female reproductive health, specifically infertility, remains largely unexplored. Our exploration into the existing body of evidence establishes a compelling link between fatigue with uterine and ovarian diseases, as well as conditions associated with infertility, such as rheumatism. This observation suggests a potentially pivotal role of fatigue in influencing overall female fertility. Furthermore, we propose a hypothetical mechanism elucidating the impact of fatigue on infertility from multiple perspectives, postulating that neuroendocrine, neurotransmitter, inflammatory immune, and mitochondrial dysfunction resulting from fatigue and its co-factors may further contribute to endocrine disorders, menstrual irregularities, and sexual dysfunction, ultimately leading to infertility. In addition to providing this comprehensive theoretical framework, we summarize anti-fatigue strategies and accentuate current knowledge gaps. By doing so, our aim is to offer novel insights, stimulate further research, and advance our understanding of the crucial interplay between fatigue and female reproductive health.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fatigue is prevalent, problematic, and co-occurs in chronic low back pain. When left untreated, fatigue can increase depressive mood, and intensify pain burden and disability in patients with chronic low back pain. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of fatigue to depressive mood, pain severity, and pain interference in patients with chronic low back pain. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional design was used to enroll and evaluate adults (n = 67) with chronic low back pain (>6 months) during their visit to an outpatient pain clinic. Participants completed psychometric instruments for fatigue, depressive mood, pain severity, and pain interference. RESULTS Participants were primarily women (73%), White (59%), with a median age of 59 years (range 22-70 years). Multiple regression models showed significant positive associations between fatigue and depressive mood (SD: 0.025 p = 0.017) with a coefficient of 0.069; fatigue and pain interference (SD: 0.123 p = 0.010) with a coefficient of 0.652; fatigue and pain severity (SD: 0.125 p-value <0.05) with a coefficient of 0.359. After adjusting for demographic factors (age, sex, and race/ethnicity) the associations remained significant. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that fatigue is associated with greater depressive mood, pain severity, and pain interference in adults with chronic low back pain. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Assessing the extent of fatigue and depressive mood as part of pain management may benefit patients with chronic low back, thereby reducing symptom burden.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of pain comorbid and anxiety/depression in clinical observations has been high, and the number of related publications has increased in recent years. Nevertheless, few studies have used bibliometric methods to analyze the scientific research on comorbid pain and depression/anxiety. The aim of this study was to systematically examine the trends in global scientific research on comorbid pain and depression/anxiety from 2012 to 2022. Methods Papers published between 2012 and 2022 were identified in the Web of Science database. Publications that examined comorbid pain and depression/anxiety were included. The language was limited to English. CiteSpace, Excel and VOSviewer were used to analyze the volume of publications, countries, institutions, authors, cocited authors, and keywords. Results A total of 30,290 papers met the inclusion criteria of the study. Using CiteSpace, VOSviewer and Excel, the results showed that the United States (10,614 publications), Harvard University (1195 publications), and Jensen, Mark P. (77 publications) were the most productive country, institution, and author, respectively. The hotspots and frontiers were "relationship between depression and pain", "gender differences in pain and depression/anxiety domains", "study of specific pain types with depression/anxiety", "treatment of pain combined with anxiety/depression", and "effects of COVID-19 on patients with pain combined with depression/anxiety". Conclusion These findings indicate a growing interest in the field of comorbid pain and depression/anxiety. The research has been broad and deep, but there is still much room for growth. Furthermore, there is a need for more mature global collaborative networks as well as more high-quality research results in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Fatigue is common in patients with chronic pain. Still, there is a lack of studies examining objectively measurable cognitive aspects of fatigue: cognitive fatigability (CF). We aimed to investigate the presence of CF in patients with chronic pain and its relation to self-rated fatigue, attention, pain characteristics, sleep disturbance, depression, and anxiety. METHODS Two hundred patients with chronic pain and a reference group of 36 healthy subjects underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery, including measurement of CF with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III Coding subtest, and self-assessment of trait and state fatigue. RESULTS The patients with chronic pain did not show more CF as compared to the reference group. There was an association between CF and processing speed on a test of sustained and selective attention in the chronic pain group, while self-rated fatigue measures and pain characteristics were not associated with CF. Self-rated fatigue measures were highly correlated with self-rated pain intensity, spreading of pain, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the distinction between objective and subjective aspects of fatigue in chronic pain, and that the underlying causes of these different aspects of fatigue need to be studied further.

Abstract
BACK GROUND Hemodialysis (HD) is a lifesaving procedure required for many patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) who are not able to undergo a kidney transplant. However, HD could cause anxiety and depression for those patients. This study aimed to assess the levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms and find out the predictors affecting them. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was adopted on a sample of 230 patients who received HD. Patients answered the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale along with demographic and clinical variables. RESULTS The study found that patients with ESRD undergoing HD had a high level of anxiety (mean = 10.59 SD = 2.78) and depression (mean = 10.86 SD = 2.49). There were significant differences in anxiety and depressive symptoms in regard to comorbidity, vascular access type, fatigue, fear, and financial status. Predictors of anxiety and depressive symptoms were: creatinine level, fatigue level, HD duration, number of dialysis sessions, blood urea nitrogen level, and age. CONCLUSIONS Anxiety and depression are under-diagnosed in patients with ESRD undergoing HD in Jordan. Screening and referral to psychological health specialists are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychometric validation of the Multidimensional Chronic Asthenia Scale (MCAS) was conducted in order to provide an effective tool for assessing the health-related quality of life of French-speaking patients with chronic asthenia (CA). METHODS Items resulting from the initial formulation of the self-reported MCAS (along with other materials) were completed by French-speaking volunteers with inactive or active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD-I vs. IBD-A) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Responses from 621 participants (180 patients with IBD-A, 172 with IBD-I, 269 with CFS) collected in a single online survey were divided into three subsamples to test the construct validity of the MCAS (Step 1, N = 240), to confirm its factorial structure (Step 2, N = 204) and to explore its convergent-discriminant validity with the Fatigue Symptoms Inventory (FSI) and revised Piper Fatigue Scale (r-PFS, Step 3, N = 177). RESULTS Steps 1 and 2 showed that, as expected, MCAS has four dimensions: feeling of constraint (FoC), physical (PC), life (LC) and interpersonal consequences (IC), which are also related to the duration of CA (i.e., the longer it lasts, the more the dimensions are impacted). The results further showed that the MCAS is sensitive enough to capture between-group differences, with the CFS group being the most impaired, followed by IBD-A and IBD-I. While convergent-discriminant validity between the 4 factors of MCAS and FSI and r-PFS, respectively, was satisfactory overall, Step 3 also pointed to some limitations that call for future research (e.g., shared variances between the PC and IC dimensions of MCAS and behavioral dimension of r-PFS). CONCLUSION Despite these limitations, the MCAS clearly constitutes a promising tool for measuring quantitative differences (i.e., severity/intensity) in CA associated with various diseases, but also, and importantly, the clinically important differences in domains of its expression (i.e., qualitative differences).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The PROMIS Preference score (PROPr) is a new health state utility (HSU) score that aims to comprehensively incorporate the biopsychosocial model of health and apply favorable psychometric properties from the descriptive PROMIS system to HSU measurements. However, minimal evidence concerning comparisons to the EQ-5D-3L and the PROPr's capability to differentiate clinical severity are available. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the PROPr to the EQ-5D-3L in terms of scale agreement, ceiling/floor effects, distribution, construct validity, discriminatory power, and relative efficiency (RE) in terms of the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for patients with low back pain (LBP). METHODS We used intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) and Bland-Altman plots to compare the PROPr and EQ-5D-3L with regared to scale agreement in a cross-sectional routine sample of LBP patients. For distribution, we used the Pearson's coefficient for skewness and for ceiling/floor effects, a 15%-top/bottom threshold. For convergent validity, we used Pearson's correlation coefficients. For known-groups validity, we applied a linear regression with interaction terms (predictors sex, age, and ODI level) and an analysis of variance (ANOVA). For discriminatory power, we calculated the effect size (ES) using Cohen's d and the ratio of the area under the receiver-operating characteristics curves (AUROC-ratio = AUROCPROPr/AUROCEQ-5D-3L). RE was measured using the ratio of F-values (RE = FPROPr/FEQ-5D-3L). RESULTS Of 218 LBP patients, 50.0% were female and the mean age was 61.8 years. The mean PROPr (0.20, 95%CI: 0.18; 0.22) and EQ-5D-3L scores (0.55, 95%CI: 0.51; 0.58) showed low agreement (d = 0.35, p < 0.001; ICC 0.27, 95%CI: -0.09; 0.59). The PROPr's distribution was positively skewed, whereas the EQ-5D-3L's was negative. Neither tool showed ceiling/floor effects, but all EQ-5D-3L dimensions did. Pearson correlation was r = 0.66 (95%CI: 0.58; 0.73). Differences were invariant to sex and age but not to ODI severity: ESEQ-5D-3L > ESPROPr and RE < 1 in higher ODI severity; ESEQ-5D-3L < ESPROPr and RE > 1 in lower ODI severity. AUROC-ratios did not show significant differences in terms of ODI severity. CONCLUSIONS All PROPr and EQ-5D-3L biopsychosocial dimensions of health showed impairment in LPB patients. The capability of EQ-5D-3L and PROPr to differentiate ODI levels depends on ODI severity. Joint application of both tools may provide additional information.

Abstract
Lower back pain is a prevalent condition affecting people across all age groups and causing significant personal and societal burdens. While numerous treatments exist, nerve mobilization has emerged as a promising approach for managing lower back pain. Nerve mobilization involves applying gentle and rhythmic movements to the affected nerves, promoting normal nerve function and releasing tension. It has been well documented that nerve mobilization can be effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with lower back pain, but the underlying mechanisms have not been clarified. This study aims to review the mechanisms of nerve mobilization in the management of lower back pain, its application, and effectiveness evaluation, and provide a potential solution for managing lower back pain.

Abstract
Background Fatigue is one of the most common subjective symptoms that impairs daily life and predict health-related events. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of fatigue in the global population. Methods PubMed and the Cochrane Library were used to search for relevant articles from inception to December 31, 2021. Studies with prevalence data of fatigue in the general population were selected and reviewed by three authors independently and cross-checked. Regarding subgroups, adults (≥18 years), minors (<18 years), and specific occupation population (participants in each study being limited to a specific occupational group), and fatigue types and severity, meta-analysis was conducted to produce point estimates and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results From the initial 3,432 studies, 91 studies accounting for 115 prevalence data points (623,624 participants) were finally selected. The prevalence of general fatigue (fatigue lasting < 6 months, or fatigue of unspecified duration) was 20.4% (95% CI, 16.7-25.0) in adults, 11.7% (95% CI, 5.2-26.6) in minors, and 42.3% (95% CI, 33.0-54.2) in specific occupations. Chronic fatigue (fatigue lasting more than 6 months) affected 10.1% (95% CI, 8.2-12.5) of adults, 1.5% (95% CI, 0.5-4.7) of minors, and 5.5% (95% CI, 1.4-21.6) of subjects in specific occupations. There was an overall female-predominant prevalence for all subgroup analyses, with a total odds ratio of 1.4 (95% CI, 1.3-1.6). Regarding the severity and presence of medical causes, the total prevalence of moderate fatigue [14.6% (95% CI, 9.8-21.8)] was 2.4-fold that of severe fatigue [6.1% (95% CI, 3.4-11.0)], while unexplained fatigue (fatigue experienced by individuals without any underlying medical condition that can explain the fatigue) was ~2.7-fold that of explained fatigue (fatigue experienced by individuals with a medical condition that can explain the fatigue); as proportion of 40.0% of physical, 8.6% of mental, and 28.4% of mixed cause. Conclusions This study has produced the first comprehensive picture of global fatigue prevalence in the general population, which will provide vital reference data contributing to fatigue-related research, including the prevention of diseases. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to explore the literature on fatigue in patients with syndromic heritable thoracic aortic disease (sHTAD), including Marfan syndrome (MFS), Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS), vascular Ehlers Danlos syndrome (vEDS) and other sHTADs, critically appraise and synthesize the relevant literature. We also aimed to investigate how adults with sHTAD experience and perceive fatigue, and to discuss clinical implications and direction for further research. METHODS First, a systematic review was performed by searching the published literature in all relevant databases and other sources until 20th October 2022. Second, a qualitative focus group interview study was conducted of 36 adults with sHTADs (LDS n = 11, MFS n = 14, vEDS n = 11). RESULTS In the systematic review, 33 articles satisfied the eligibility criteria (3 reviews and 30 primary studies). Of the primary studies: 25 dealt with adults (MFS n = 17, MFS/EDS n = 1, EDS n = 2, LDS/vEDS n = 3, different sHTADs n = 2), 5 with children (MFS n = 4, different sHTADs n = 1). Twenty-two were cross-sectional quantitative studies, 4 prospective and 4 qualitative studies. The quality of the included studies was mostly good, but many had small sample sizes, low response rates and/or participants without verified diagnosis. Despite these limitations, studies indicated high prevalence of fatigue (ranging from 37 to 89%), and fatigue was associated with both health and psychosocial aspects. Few studies found that fatigue was associated with disease-related symptoms. In the qualitative focus groups most of the participants reported that they had experienced fatigue which influenced several aspects of life. Four themes related to fatigue were elucidated: (1) different diagnoses-different fatigue?, (2) the nature of fatigue, (3) searches for causes of fatigue, (4) dealing with fatigue in daily life. The four themes seemed mutually interrelated in terms of barriers, strategies and facilitators for dealing with fatigue. The participants experienced fatigue as a consistent dilemma between self-assertion and inadequacy. Fatigue seems to influence several aspects of daily life and may be one of the most debilitating symptoms of having a sHTAD. CONCLUSION Fatigue seems to negatively impact the lives of people with sHTADs and should be recognized as an important aspect in the lifelong follow-up of these patients. The life-threatening complications of sHTADs may result in emotional stress, including fatigue and the risk of developing a sedentary lifestyle. Research and clinical initiatives should consider rehabilitation interventions aiming at postponing the onset or reducing symptoms of fatigue.

Abstract
AIMS To examine associations between fatigue and poor sleep quality, depression symptoms, and pain intensity in an adult population with chronic arthralgia/myalgia in the temporomandibular region and to test whether fatigue predicted future pain-related interference above and beyond these other constructs. METHODS The sample included 40 participants with chronic arthralgia and/or myalgia in the temporomandibular region and 21 healthy controls. Participants self-reported fatigue (PROMIS fatigue score), sleep quality (PSQI), depression symptoms (PROMIS depression score), and average pain intensity and completed four weekly surveys of pain-related interference with daily activities. RESULTS The chronic arthralgia/myalgia group reported greater fatigue than healthy controls (t = 4.85, P < .001). Fatigue was significantly correlated with poor sleep quality (r = .46), higher depression symptoms (r = .41), and higher pain intensity (r = .46) in the chronic arthralgia/myalgia group, and these three variables together explained 39% of variance in fatigue. Greater fatigue-above and beyond sleep quality, depression symptoms, and average pain intensity-was associated with a higher average level of pain-related interference (β = 0.56, t score = 3.30, P = .002) over the following month. Depression symptoms, poor sleep quality, and pain intensity did not significantly predict pain interference above and beyond fatigue (all P > .05). CONCLUSION The results suggest that fatigue is a clinically relevant symptom distinct from depression, poor sleep quality, or pain intensity and may be related to worse pain outcomes over the following month in adults with chronic temporomandibular arthralgia/myalgia. Clinicians should assess, monitor, and treat fatigue to the best of their abilities when working with this population.

Abstract
Background Firefighters are faced with numerous work-related demands and stressors, including exposure to potentially traumatic events, and are thus at an increased risk for poor mental health outcomes. To better understand the mental health of trauma-exposed firefighters, the current study sought to examine the association of fatigue sensitivity with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depressive symptom severity in a cross-sectional study design. Methods Participants included 107 (M age = 40.8 years; SD age = 8.95; age range: 21-67 years; 95.0% male) trauma-exposed firefighters. Results Findings from the current study indicated that fatigue sensitivity was a statistically significant clinical correlate of PTSD, anxiety, and depressive symptom severity. The statistically significant incremental effects were small to medium across the mental health variables, but evident after accounting for years in the fire service, sleep quality, and trauma load. Conclusions The present data provide initial empirical evidence for the role of fatigue sensitivity in terms of a broad range of mental health indices among trauma-exposed firefighters.

Abstract
Background Fatigue sensitivity, or the misattribution that fatigue symptoms will lead to negative personal consequences, is one individual difference factor related to adverse behavioral health consequences. Methods The current study investigated whether fatigue sensitivity was related to panic symptoms, depression, as well as fatigue severity among 166 persons of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds with severe fatigue. Results As hypothesized, fatigue sensitivity was statistically significantly related to greater panic symptoms, general depression, and fatigue severity. These results were evident over the variance explained by age, sex, neuroticism, and somatic symptoms. Conclusions This work is the first to evaluate fatigue sensitivity in terms of behavioral health outcomes among a racial/ethnically diverse sample with severe fatigue.

Abstract
Introduction Central pain facilitation can hinder recovery in people with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Objectives The objective of this observational study was to investigate whether indices of centrally facilitated pain are associated with pain outcomes in a hospital-based cohort of individuals with CLBP undertaking a pain management programme. Methods Participants provided self-report and pain sensitivity data at baseline (n = 97) and again 3 months (n = 87) after a cognitive behavioural therapy-based group intervention including physiotherapy. Indices of centrally facilitated pain were pressure pain detection threshold, temporal summation and conditioned pain modulation at the forearm, Widespread Pain Index (WPI) classified using a body manikin, and a Central Mechanisms Trait (CMT) factor derived from 8 self-reported characteristics of anxiety, depression, neuropathic pain, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, pain distribution, catastrophizing, and sleep. Pain severity was a composite factor derived from Numerical Rating Scales. Cross-sectional and longitudinal regression models were adjusted for age and sex. Results Baseline CMT and WPI each was associated with higher pain severity (CMT: r = 0.50, P < 0.001; WPI: r = 0.21, P = 0.04) at baseline and at 3 months (CMT: r = 0.38, P < 0.001; WPI: r = 0.24, P = 0.02). High baseline CMT remained significantly associated with pain at 3 months after additional adjustment for baseline pain (β = 2.45, P = 0.04, R 2 = 0.25, P < 0.0001). Quantitative sensory testing indices of pain hypersensitivity were not significantly associated with pain outcomes at baseline or at 3 months. Conclusion Central mechanisms beyond those captured by quantitative sensory testing are associated with poor CLBP outcome and might be targets for improved therapy.

Abstract
Background Numerous investigations have revealed significant relations between pain and fatigue in individuals with persistent pain conditions. However, the direction of influence between pain and fatigue remains unclear. Shortcomings of design and analytic approaches used in previous research limit the nature of conclusions that can be drawn about possible causal or directional relations between pain and fatigue. The present study investigated the temporal relation between changes in pain and changes in fatigue in individuals with musculoskeletal pain enrolled in a 10-week behavioral activation intervention. On the basis of previous findings, it was hypothesized that analyses would support a bi-directional relation between pain and fatigue. Methods The study sample consisted of 104 individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain participating in a 10-week standardized rehabilitation intervention. Measures of pain intensity and fatigue were completed pre-, mid-, and post-treatment. The three-wave data panel permitted examination of the direction of influence between pain and fatigue through the course of the intervention. A random-intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) was used to examine the temporal relation between pain and fatigue. Results Consistent with previous research, cross-sectional analyses of pre-treatment data revealed significant correlations between measures of pain and fatigue. Significant reductions in pain and fatigue were observed through the course of treatment (d = 0.33 and d = 0.66, p < .001, respectively). RI-CLPM revealed that pain severity predicted later fatigue (pre to mid-treatment standardized path coefficient (β) = 0.55, p = 0.02; mid to post-treatment β = 0.36, p = 0.001); however, fatigue did not predict later pain severity. Conclusions Discussion addresses the processes that might underlie the temporal relation between pain and fatigue. Clinical implications of the findings are also discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Along with the symptoms of pain and fatigue, pain catastrophizing and avoidance behaviors are highly prevalent and associated with functional impairment in fibromyalgia (FM) patients. Although pain and fatigue affect patients' quality of life, research has been exclusively focused on how pain affects physical activity and exercise. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of pain catastrophizing and preference for fatigue-avoidance goals in walking behavior and functional impairment in women with FM. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study the sample was composed of 76 participants aged 18 years and older (mean age=55.05, SD=7.70). The study evaluated pain catastrophizing, preference for fatigue-avoidance goals, functional impairment, and walking behavior along with sociodemographic variables and clinical data. RESULTS Pain catastrophizing was associated with preference for fatigue-avoidance goals and this preference was associated with greater functional impairment and less distance walked. Path analysis supported the mediating role of preference for fatigue-avoidance goals in the relationship between pain catastrophizing and walking behavior and between pain catastrophizing and functional impairment. Furthermore, pain catastrophizing predicted greater preference for fatigue-avoidance goals which predicted more problems in functioning and less distance walked. DISCUSSION The present study may help clarify the connection between the factors that stop individuals with FM from implementing beneficial behaviors such as walking, and thus, allowing for the design of psychological interventions that seek to maintain physical functioning despite experiencing fatigue.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fatigue is known to interfere with function in individuals with physical disabilities. In order to monitor changes in fatigue over time and evaluate the efficacy of treatments, psychometrically sound measures of fatigue are needed. The aim of this work was to evaluate the validity of the Silhouettes Fatigue Scale with English instructions (SFS-EN) in a sample of adults with physical disabilities living in the USA. METHODS Individuals with medical conditions associated with physical disabilities responded to an online survey that included the SFS-EN as well as another validated measure of fatigue (PROMIS short form-4a Fatigue Scale), and measures of pain intensity and pain catastrophizing. RESULTS 523 individuals participated (mean age = 59.1 years; SD = 11.4). Most participants were Caucasian (89%), women (59%) and unemployed (71%). Results showed strong positive correlations between both measures of fatigue, supporting the convergent validity of the SFS-EN. In addition, the magnitude of this association was significantly greater than the association between the scores of the SFS-EN and the measures of pain intensity and pain catastrophizing, supporting the former's discriminant validity. CONCLUSIONS The findings extend previous results supporting the SFS as a brief, easy to administer and understand, and valid measure of fatigue.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONFatigue is common in adults with physical disabilities and chronic pain.The Silhouettes Fatigue Scale (SFS) is a new single-item measure of general fatigue.Findings show that the SFS with English instructions (SFS-EN) is an easy to understand measure.Results support the convergent and discriminant validity of the SFS-EN score in adults with physical disabilities and chronic pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research has shown that opioid craving is one of the strongest determinants of opioid misuse in patients with chronic pain. To date, however, little is known on the factors that contribute to opioid craving in these patients. It is possible that patients' physical dependence to opioids, manifested by opioid withdrawal symptoms in between daily opioid doses, contribute to opioid craving. Physical dependence symptoms might also lead to psychological distress, which in turn might contribute to opioid craving. The first objective of this study was to examine the day-to-day association between opioid withdrawal symptoms and opioid craving among patients with chronic pain. We also examined whether negative affect and catastrophic thinking mediated this association. METHODS In this longitudinal study, chronic pain patients (n = 79) prescribed short-acting opioids completed daily diaries for 14 consecutive days. Diaries assessed a host of pain, psychological, and opioid-related variables. RESULTS Day-to-day elevations in opioid withdrawal symptoms were associated with heightened opioid craving (p < .001). Results of a multilevel mediation analysis revealed that this association was mediated by patients' daily levels of negative affect and catastrophizing (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS Our study provides valuable new insights into our understanding of factors that may contribute to prescription opioid craving among patients with chronic pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic low back pain is the second leading cause of disability in the United States and is frequently related to increased risk of opioid and alcohol misuse. Depression is associated with poor substance use outcomes among persons with chronic low back pain. Theoretically, the influence of depression on opioid and alcohol misuse among those with chronic low back pain may vary as a function of fatigue sensitivity. METHOD To empirically test this theorized model, the current study examined fatigue sensitivity as a moderator for the relation between depression and opioid and alcohol misuse among 291 adults (69.1% female, M age = 45.77 years, SD = 11.22) with chronic low back pain currently using opioids. RESULTS Results suggested that fatigue sensitivity moderated the effect of depression on opioid misuse (β=0.60, p= .001, 95%CI [0.02, 0.06]) and alcohol misuse (β=0.45, p= .025, 95%CI [0.002, 0.03]). Examination of simple slopes revealed that the association between depression and opioid and alcohol misuse was statistically significant for those with higher levels of fatigue sensitivity, but not lower levels of fatigue sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the current investigation provides initial empirical support for the moderating role of fatigue sensitivity in the relation between depression and alcohol and opioid misuse among adults with chronic low back pain.
