Adsorption isotherm, kinetic and mechanism of expanded graphite for sulfadiazine antibiotics removal from aqueous solutions

Azadirachta indica leaf extract based green-synthesized ZnO nanoparticles coated on spent tea waste activated carbon for pharmaceuticals and personal care products removal

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants in aqueous systems, posing threat to both human health and environment. In prior research, predominant focus has been on examining various adsorbents for removing PPCPs from single-pollutant systems. However, no study has delved into simultaneous adsorption of PPCPs multi-pollutant mixture. This study evaluates performance of Azadirachta indica leaf extract-based green-synthesized ZnO nanoparticles coated on spent tea waste activated carbon (ZTAC) for removing sulfadiazine (SZN) and acetaminophen (ACN). Adsorption investigations were conducted in single-component (ACN/SZN) and binary-component (ACN + SZN) systems. The synthesized ZTAC was characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX, porosimetry and pHpzc analysis. The study examines impact of time (1-60 min), dose (0.2-4 g/L), pH (2-12) and PPCPs concentration (1-100 mg/L) on ACN and SZN removal. Various kinetic and isotherm models were employed to elucidate mechanisms involved in sorption of PPCPs. Furthermore, synergistic and antagonistic aspects of sorption process in multi-component system were investigated. ZTAC, characterized by its crystalline nature and surface area of 980.85 m2/g, exhibited maximum adsorption capacity of 47.39 mg/g for ACN and 34.01 mg/g for SZN under optimal conditions of 15 min, 3 g/L and pH 7. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model best-fitted the experimental data indicating chemisorption mechanism. Removal of ACN and SZN on ZTAC demonstrated synergistic nature, signifying cooperative adsorption. Overall, valorization of ZTAC offers effective and efficient adsorbent for elimination of PPCPs from wastewater.

Experimental data and modeling of sulfadiazine adsorption onto raw and modified clays from Tunisia

In recent years, the increasing detection of emerging pollutants (particularly antibiotics, such as sulfonamides) in agricultural soils and water bodies has raised growing concern about related environmental and health problems. In the current research, sulfadiazine (SDZ) adsorption was studied for three raw and chemically modified clays. The experiments were carried out for increasing doses of the antibiotic (0, 1, 5, 10, 20, and 40 μmol L-1) at ambient temperature and natural pH with a contact time of 24 h. The eventual fitting to Freundlich, Langmuir and Linear adsorption models, as well as residual concentrations of antibiotics after adsorption, was assessed. The results obtained showed that one of the clays (HJ1) adsorbed more SDZ (reaching 99.9 % when 40 μmol L-1 of SDZ were added) than the other clay materials, followed by the acid-activated AM clay (which reached 99.4 % for the same SDZ concentration added). The adsorption of SDZ followed a linear adsorption isotherm, suggesting that hydrophobic interactions, rather than cation exchange, played a significant role in SDZ retention. Concerning the adsorption data, the best adjustment corresponded to the Freundlich model. The highest Freundlich KF scores were obtained for the AM acid-treated and raw HJ1 clays (606.051 and 312.969 Ln μmol1-n kg-1, respectively). The Freundlich n parameter ranged between 0.047 and 1.506. Regarding desorption, the highest value corresponded to the AM clay, being generally <10 % for raw clays, <8 % for base-activated clays, and <6 % for acid-activated clays. Chemical modifications contributed to improve the adsorption capacity of the AM clay, especially when the highest concentrations of the antibiotic were added. The results of this research can be considered relevant as regard environmental and public health assessment since they estimate the feasibility of three Tunisian clays in SDZ removal from aqueous solutions.

Efficient Cr(vi) removal by expanded graphite synergized with oxalic acid under UV irradiation

Expanded graphite (EG), an easily-obtained carbon material with the potential of transferring electrons, was utilized successfully in the removal of hazardous hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)) by environment-friendly oxalic acid (Ox) under UV irradiation. EG with a unique worm-like structure was obtained via a facile microwave treatment. The results showed that the EG + Ox + UV system had optimum performance, removing 99.32% of the Cr(vi) (1 mM) within 60 min at pH = 3, and the kinetic rate constant of Cr(vi) elimination was 7.95 mol L^-1 min^-1. Three components are potentially involved in the Cr(vi) elimination mechanism by the EG + Ox + UV system: (1) the direct electron transfer (DET) pathway of the EG-Ox-Cr(vi) through the acceleration effect of EG caused the majority removal of Cr(vi) under UV; (2) ·CO₂ ^- generated from Ox photolysis was used to reduce some Cr(vi); (3) ·CO₂ ^- created from Cr(vi)-Ox complexes in the solution through the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) pathway also reduced a little Cr(vi). Overall, the efficient removal of Cr(vi) by the EG + Ox + UV system provided new ideas for future research on Cr(vi) treatment.

Competitive adsorption analysis of antibiotics removal from multi-component systems using chemically activated spent tea waste: effect of operational parameters, kinetics, and equilibrium study

In this study, spent tea powder waste was chemically treated for the synthesis of adsorbent using two activating agents, i.e., sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, to obtain sulfuric acid activated carbon (SAC) and phosphoric acid activated carbon (PAC). The performance of PAC and SAC for the sorption of tetracycline (TCY) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) antibiotics from mono-component (SDZ/TCY) and multi-component (SDZ + TCY) adsorption systems was investigated. Synergistic and antagonistic effects were studied in removing target pollutants in SDZ + TCY systems. Kinetic and equilibrium studies were modeled by different kinetic and isotherm models. The adsorption capacity was assessed using Langmuir's competitive model in a [Formula: see text]. Pseudo-first-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models best fit the experimental kinetic and equilibrium data to remove antibiotics. The Langmuir's maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) of PAC for the removal of SDZ and TCY in a [Formula: see text] was found to be 16.75 and 10.87 mg/g, and q_m of SAC for the removal of SDZ and TCY was found to be 24.69 and 23.20 mg/g, respectively. In SDZ + TCY multi-component system, adsorption of TCY was synergistic in nature for both PAC and SAC. Sorption of SDZ displayed an antagonistic effect in the SDZ + TCY system for both SAC and PAC. In conclusion, the activated carbons synthesized from spent tea waste could be effectively adopted for the simultaneous adsorption of SDZ and TCY from multi-component systems.

Effective Removal of Sulfonamides Using Recyclable MXene-Decorated Bismuth Ferrite Nanocomposites Prepared via Hydrothermal Method

Developing a simple and efficient method for removing organic micropollutants from aqueous systems is crucial. The present study describes the preparation and application, for the first time, of novel MXene-decorated bismuth ferrite nanocomposites (BiFeO₃/MXene) for the removal of six sulfonamides including sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfathiazole (STZ), sulfamerazine (SMZ), sulfamethazine (SMTZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMXZ) and sulfisoxazole (SXZ). The properties of BiFeO₃/MXene are enhanced by the presence of BiFeO₃ nanoparticles, which provide a large surface area to facilitate the removal of sulfonamides. More importantly, BiFeO₃/MXene composites demonstrated remarkable sulfonamide adsorption capabilities compared to pristine MXene, which is due to the synergistic effect between BiFeO₃ and MXene. The kinetics and isotherm models of sulfonamide adsorption on BiFeO₃/MXene are consistent with a pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. BiFeO₃/MXene had appreciable reusability after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, BiFeO₃/MXene is stable and retains its original properties upon desorption. The present work provides an effective method for eliminating sulfonamides from water by exploiting the excellent texture properties of BiFeO₃/MXene.

Adsorptive removal of pharmaceutically active compounds from multicomponent system using Azadirachta indica induced zinc oxide nanoparticles: analysis of competitive and cooperative adsorption

In this research, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles synthesized using neem leaf (Azadirachta indica) extract were used as an adsorbent for removing two widely used pharmaceutical compounds acetaminophen (AMP) and sulfadiazine (SDZ). The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized using SEM-EDS, FTIR, TEM, BET, and XRD analysis. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were found to be in the size range of 10 nm with a surface area of 48.551 m²/g. The adsorptive performance of ZnO nanoparticles in both mono-component (MoS) and multi-component system (MuS) was investigated under various operational parameters viz. contact time, temperature, pH, concentration of pharmaceutical compound and ZnO nanoparticles dose. It was observed that the maximum adsorption capacity of ZnO nanoparticles was 7.87 mg/g and 7.77 mg/g for AMP and SDZ, respectively, under the optimum conditions of 7 pH and 2 g/L adsorbent dosage. The experimental data best-fitted with the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, indicating monolayer chemisorption. Further investigation on removal of AMP and SDZ from multicomponent system was modelled using a Langmuir competitive model. The desorption study has shown 25.28% and 22.4% removal of AMP and SDZ from the surface of ZnO nanoparticles. In general, green synthesized ZnO nanoparticles can be utilized effectively as adsorbent for removal of pharmaceutically active compounds from wastewater.

Selective adsorption of various phosphorus species coexistence in water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate on goethite: Experimental investigation and molecular dynamics simulation

The geochemical processes of polyphosphates (poly-Ps) are important for phosphorus (P) management and environmental protection. Water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate (APP) containing various P species has been increasingly used as an alternative P-fertilizer. The various P species coexistence and the chelation of poly-Ps with mental would trigger the P's competitive adsorption and affect the APP's adsorption intensity on goethite, compared to single orthophosphate (P₁). P adsorption behaviors of APP1 with two P species and APP2 with seven P species on goethite were investigated via batch experiments in comparison to the traditional P-fertilizer of mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP). Coadsorption of P₁ and pyrophosphate (P₂) on goethite was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The more Fe³⁺ dissolved from goethite as a bridge due to the chelation of poly-Ps in APP and contributed to the stronger APP adsorption on goethite compared with MAP. Ion chromatography and spectral analysis showed P₁ and P₂ in APP were mainly adsorbed by goethite via mainly forming bidentate complexes. The goethite preferentially adsorbed P₁ at lower APP concentration but increased the poly-Ps' adsorption at higher APP concentration. MD simulation showed that electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds played a key role in water-phosphates-goethite systems. The P₁ pre-adsorbed on goethite could be replaced by P₂ at high P₂ concentration. The results develop new insights regarding the selective adsorption of various P species coexistence in goethite-rich environments.

Negatively Charged Composite Nanofibrous Hydrogel Membranes for High-Performance Protein Adsorption

Nanofibrous materials are considered as promising candidates for fabricating high-efficiency chromatography media, which are urgently needed in protein pharmaceuticals purification and biological research, yet still face several bottlenecks. Herein, novel negatively charged composite nanofibrous hydrogel membranes (NHMs) are obtained by a facile combination of electrospinning and surface coating modification. The resulting NHMs exhibit controllable morphologies and chemical structures. Benefitting from the combined effect of the stable framework of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) nanofiber and the function layer of negatively charged hydrogel, as well as good pore connectivity among nanofibers, NHMs exhibit a high protein adsorption capacity of around 1000 mg g^-1, and are superior to the commercial cellulose fibrous adsorbent (Sartobind^®) and the reported nanofibrous membranous adsorbents. Moreover, due to their relatively stable physicochemical and mechanical properties, NHMs possess comprehensive adsorption performance, favorable resistance to acid and solvents, good selectivity, and excellent regenerability. The designed NHMs composite adsorbents are expected to supply a new protein chromatography platform for effective protein purification in biopharmaceuticals and biochemical reagents.

Transport of tetracycline in saturated porous media: combined functions of inorganic ligands and solution pH

To date, there is still very little knowledge about the combined effects of typical inorganic ligands and solution pH values on mobility characteristics of tetracycline (TC) through saturated aquifer media. In this work, three typical inorganic ligands (i.e., phosphate, silicate, and iodate) were employed in the transport experiments. Generally, all the ligands promoted TC mobility over the pH range of 5.0-9.0 owing to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between sand grains and TC anionic forms (i.e., TC^- and TC^2-) as well as the competitive deposition between ligands and antibiotic molecules for attachment sites. Furthermore, the transport-enhancement effects of ligands on TC intensively depended on ligand type and followed the sequence of phosphate > silicate > iodate. This phenomenon was ascribed to their different molecular sizes and binding abilities to sand grains. Interestingly, the differences in extents of enhanced effects of various inorganic ligands on TC transport varied with background solution pH due to pH-induced different extents of deposition site competition effects. Moreover, the two-site nonequilibrium model (which accounts for an equilibrium site and a kinetic site) as well as adsorption and kinetic studies were performed to help interpret the controlling mechanisms for the synergistic effects of inorganic ligands and solution pH on TC transport in saturated quartz sand. The findings of our study clearly demonstrate that inorganic ligands may be critical factors in assessing the fate and transport of antibiotics in groundwater systems.

Fabrication of magnetic nickel incorporated carbon nanofibers for superfast adsorption of sulfadiazine: Performance and mechanisms exploration

Herein, novel magnetic nickel incorporated carbon nanofibers (Ni@CNF) were successfully synthesized via electrostatic spinning method for sulfadiazine (SDZ) adsorption. We combined computational and experimental tools to clarify the distinct nature of SDZ on Ni@CNF. Extensive computations and characterizations of SDZ-Ni adsorption complexes evidenced that Ni atoms were indispensable for SDZ adsorption and increasing the number of Ni atoms in Ni@CNF significantly improved SDZ adsorption due to the lower adsorption energy (E_ad). As we surmised, the adsorption capacity of Ni@CNF enhanced gradually with increasing the mass ratio of Ni in the composite. The as-prepared 9%Ni@CNF achieved removal efficiency of 98.9% for SDZ (2.5 mg/L) in 25 min, while the pure CNF hardly removed any SDZ under the identical conditions. The experimental data was better fitted by the Langmuir model with the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 103.21 mg/g at 318 K. Besides, the 9%Ni@CNF exhibited great applicability to various organic contaminants, and excellent stability and reusability over five consecutive cycles. Overall, for the first time, we provide the evidence that Ni atoms in the Ni@CNF plays a crucial role in SDZ adsorption, which can guide us for constructing nickle incorporated adsorbents with impressive adsorption capacity in environmental remediation.

Insight into the inhibitory mechanism of inorganic ligands on the adsorption of tetracycline onto hematite

Inorganic ligands, ubiquitous in the natural environment, can interact with iron oxide minerals. To date, our knowledge regarding the effects of inorganic ligands on the adsorption properties of antibiotics onto iron oxides is still limited. In this work, the influences of different inorganic ligands (chosen iodate, silicate, and phosphate as the model ligands) on the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) onto hematite were examined. Adsorption isotherms indicated that inorganic ligands inhibited TC adsorption. The observations were attributed to the increase of electrostatic repulsion between anionic species (i.e., TC^-) and negatively charged hematite particles as well as the competition between TC^- species and inorganic ligand anions for the adsorption sites on hematite surfaces. Interestingly, the inhibitory effects of the three inorganic ligands were in the order of phosphate > silicate > iodate; the trend was stemmed from their differences in the binding affinities to hematite and the molecular size. When the background solutions contained divalent cations (e.g., Ca²⁺), surface precipitation of Ca-inorganic ligand compounds on hematite was another important mechanism for the inhibitory effects. Furthermore, adsorption of TC onto hematite with or without inorganic ligands was strongly affected by solution pH, which was due to the combination of the amphoteric behavior of TC and highly pH-dependent surface charges of the hematite mineral. Current results highlight the critical roles of ubiquitous inorganic ligands in revealing the fate of tetracycline antibiotics in natural systems.

Linearized and nonlinearized modellings for comparative uptake assessment of metal-organic framework-derived nanocomposite towards sulfonamide antibiotics

The emergent occurrence of sulfonamide species involving sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) in aquatic systems can cause a wide range of potential risks; hence, remediation strategies need to be necessary. Here, we develop the novel metal-organic framework-derived nanocomposite, and apply for the adsorption of SDZ and SMZ antibiotics. To assess the best-fitting kinetic (pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order) and isotherm (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, and Khan) models, a series of numerous statistical analysis was performed. Numerous error functions including squares of the errors (SSE), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), Marquardt's percent standard deviation (MPSD), and mean relative error (MRE) were also analyzed to assess the linear and nonlinear models. The results indicated that both linear and nonlinear kinetic models were mostly fitted well with pseudo second-order models (R_adj)² > 0.97. Although linear kinetics gave better (R_adj)², error functions (MRE, SSE, HYBRID, and MPSD) were mostly higher than those of nonlinear kinetics. For adsorption isotherm, nonlinear Redlich-Peterson was the most compatible model with extremely high adjusted coefficients of determination (R_adj)² ~ 1.0000. While nonlinear Langmuir model gave relatively high (R_adj)² (0.9898-0.9960) and acceptable error functions, we found the considerable difference of error functions and parameters among four types of linear Langmuir (Types I, II, III, IV). The findings indicate potential errors as selecting one of linearized Langmuir types in equilibrium study. It is suggested that nonlinear models should be applied for better fitness.

Preparation of Fe/Ni Bimetallic Oxide Porous Graphene Composite Materials for Efficient Adsorption and Removal of Sulfonamides

An iron-nickel bimetallic oxide porous graphene composite material (Fe/Ni-PG) was prepared by a simple partial combustion method, which can be used to effectively remove sulfonamides (SAs) from an aqueous solution. The adsorption performance of Fe/Ni-PG, Fe-PG, and Ni-PG on six kinds of SAs was compared, and the influence of time, temperature, pH, and initial concentration of SAs on the adsorption behavior of SAs of Fe/Ni-PG in an aqueous solution was studied. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics exhibited that the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics model can describe the adsorption isotherm and kinetics. The maximum adsorption capacities of sulfadiazine (SD), sulfamerazine (SM), sulfamethazine (SDM), sulfathiazole (STZ), sulfapyridine (SPD), and sulfisoxazole (SIZ) calculated by the Langmuir model were 26.3, 50.3, 42.2, 27.3, 34.5, and 41.7 mg/g, respectively, which exceeded those of most reported adsorbents. In the adsorption process, hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor, electrostatic interaction, and bimetallic synergies play a major role, and the entire adsorption process is spontaneously endothermic. In addition, the material has excellent stability, and the Fe/Ni-PG after desorption is consistent with the raw material. This work provides a favorable way for the removal of SAs in the environment.

Removal of diclofenac from aqueous solutions by adsorption on thermo-plasma expanded graphite

The adsorption of diclofenac on thermo-plasma expanded graphite (a commercial product) from water solutions was investigated. The adsorbent material was characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, Raman and X-ray diffraction analyses. Typical diffractogram and Raman spectrum of graphitic material, dimension of 24.02 nm as crystallite dimension and a surface area of 47 m² g^-1 were obtained. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity was evaluated in the range 1-7 and the adsorption mechanism was described by kinetic and isothermal studies. Pseudo-second order and Dubinin-Radushkevich models agreed with theoretical values of adsorption capacity (i.e. 400 and 433 mg g^-1, respectively) and resulted to be the best fit for kinetics and isothermal experimental data. The thermodynamics of the process was evaluated by plotting the adsorption capacity/concentration ratio at the equilibrium as a function of different values of the multiplicative inverse of temperature. Moreover, the adsorbent regeneration was also investigated, comparing two different remediation techniques. Solvent washing performed with NaOH 0.2 M and thermo-treatment carried out by heating in an oven at 105 °C for 2 h and then at 200 °C for 4 h. The thermo-treatment was the best technique to regenerate the adsorbent, ensuring same performance after 4 cycles of use and regeneration.

Selective removal of color substances by carbon-based adsorbents in livestock wastewater effluents

Livestock wastewater effluent generated after the anaerobic treatment process contains the considerable amount of color-causing organic matter. In this study, a quantitative comparison of three carbon-based adsorbents included granular activated carbon (GAC), expanded graphite (EG), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was carried out for the potential application to the removal of color substances, and their mechanism was proposed. Although GAC showed the highest specific dissolved organic carbon (DOC) adsorption capacity, the color removal efficiency was the smallest among three adsorbents. The selective color removal ratios of EG and MWNTs reached 22.7 ± 0.1 PtCo/mg-DOC-removed and 21.2 ± 0.1 PtCo/mg-DOC-removed, respectively, while that of GAC was only 12.3 ± 0.1 PtCo/mg-DOC-removed. The selective adsorption of color substances by graphene-based carbon materials was due to the aromatic π-π interaction between organic matter and the hexagonal carbon lattice of graphene. The analysis of molecular weight distribution also confirmed that the exposed surface area and macro-pores were responsible for the adsorption of high molecular weight color substances. The chemical regeneration of three adsorbents was examined using 1% NaOCl solution and MWNTs showed almost complete recovery of the initial color removal capacity. In conclusion, MWNTs were the most suitable carbon nanomaterial for the selective color removal from livestock wastewater effluent.

Phosphate adsorption from aqueous solution by lanthanum-iron hydroxide loaded with expanded graphite

In this study, a novel adsorbent of expanded graphite loaded with lanthanum (III)-iron (III) hydroxide (EG-LaFe) was prepared for phosphate removal. The single factor of oscillating time, La/Fe molar ratio and total concentration of EG-LaFe were studied for optimization of preparation conditions. Effects of contact time, initial phosphate concentration, adsorption temperature and coexisting ions on the phosphate removal performance of EG-LaFe were investigated in detail. Adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption studies showed that the pseudo-second-order and the Langmuir model fitted the experimental data quite well. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the phosphate adsorption of EG-LaFe was spontaneous and endothermic. In addition, EG-LaFe exhibit high sorption selectivity toward phosphate over other coexisting ions. The phosphate adsorption mechanism was investigated by means of pH study, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the probable mechanisms of phosphate adsorption on EG-LaFe were the replacement of surface hydroxyl groups (M-OH), electrostatic interaction and Lewis acid-base interaction.
