Construction of Magnetic Composite Bacterial Carrier and Application in 17β-Estradiol Degradation

Estrogen contamination is widespread and microbial degradation is a promising removal method; however, unfavorable environments can hinder microbial function. In this study, a natural estrogen 17β-estradiol (E2) was introduced as a degradation target, and a new combination of bacterial carrier was investigated. We found the best combination of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) was 4% total concentration, PVA:SA = 5:5, with nano-Fe3O4 at 2%, and maltose and glycine added to promote degradation, for which the optimal concentrations were 5 g·L−1 and 10 g·L−1, respectively. Based on the above exploration, the bacterial carrier was made, and the degradation efficiency of the immobilized bacteria reached 92.3% in 5 days. The immobilized bacteria were reused for three cycles, and the degradation efficiency of each round could exceed 94%. Immobilization showed advantages at pH 5, pH 11, 10 °C, 40 °C, and 40 g·L−1 NaCl, and the degradation efficiency of the immobilized bacteria was higher than 90%. In the wastewater, the immobilized bacteria could degrade E2 to about 1 mg·L−1 on the 5th day. This study constructed a bacterial immobilization carrier using a new combination, explored the application potential of the carrier, and provided a new choice of bacterial immobilization carrier.

An overview of in-situ remediation for nitrate in groundwater

Faced with the increasing nitrate pollution in groundwater, in-situ remediation has been widely studied and applied on field-scale as an efficient, economical and less disturbing remediation technology. In this review, we discussed various in-situ remediation for nitrate in groundwater and elaborate on biostimulation, phytoremediation, electrokinetic remediation, permeable reactive barrier and combined remediation. This review described principles of each in-situ remediation, application, the latest progress, problems and challenges on field-scale. Factors affecting the efficiency of in-situ remediation for nitrate in groundwater are also summarized. Finally, this review presented the prospect of in-situ remediation for nitrate pollution in groundwater. The objective of this review is to examine the state of knowledge on in-situ remediation for nitrate in groundwater and critically evaluate factors which affect the up-scaling of laboratory and bench-scale research to field-scale application. This helps to better understand the control mechanisms of various in-situ remediation for nitrate pollution in groundwater and the design options available for application to the field-scale.

Research progress in solid carbon source-based denitrification technologies for different target water bodies

Nitrogen pollution in water bodies is a serious environmental issue which is commonly treated by various methods such as heterotrophic denitrification. In particular, solid carbon source (SCS)-based denitrification has attracted widespread research interest due to its gradual carbon release, ease of management, and long-term operation. This paper reviews the types and properties of SCSs for different target water bodies. While both natural (wheat straw, wood chips, and fruit shells) and synthetic (polybutylene succinate, polycaprolactone, polylactic acid, and polyhydroxyalkanoates) SCSs are commonly used, it is observed that the denitrification performance of the synthetic sources is generally superior. SCSs have been used in the treatment of wastewater (including aquaculture wastewater), agricultural subsurface drainage, surface water, and groundwater; however, the key research aspects related to SCSs differ markedly based on the target waterbody. These key research aspects include nitrogen pollutant removal rate and byproduct accumulation (ordinary wastewater); water quality parameters and aquatic product yield (recirculating aquaculture systems); temperature and hydraulic retention time (agricultural subsurface drainage); the influence of dissolved oxygen (surface waters); and nitrate-nitrogen load, HRT, and carbon source dosage on denitrification rate (groundwater). It is concluded that SCS-based denitrification is a promising technique for the effective elimination of nitrate-nitrogen pollution in water bodies.
