Abstract
In this work, the synthesis of activated carbon from the bark of the Magonia pubescens (known as Tingui) and its efficiency in the removal of diclofenac sodium through batch adsorption tests and physical-chemical characterizations were investigated. The phytotoxicity of this material was also evaluated through germination and root growth of Lactuca sativa seeds. According to the experimental design performed for the synthesis of Tingui carbon, the optimized temperature and residence time for the production of this adsorbent were 550 °C and 120 min, respectively. The equilibrium time was reached in 600 min and the theoretical model that best fitted the kinetic data was the Elovich model. The BET was the best fit for the adsorption isotherm dataThis indicates that the adsorption process of sodium diclofenac by activated carbon can occur by two different mechanisms, monolayer and/or multilayer adsorption, depending on the conditions employed in the process, such as temperature and adsorbate concentration. The thermodynamic study showed that the process was favourable and spontaneous in the temperature range evaluated. Furthermore, the characterizations showed by TG/DTG and FTIR analyses that the temperature throughout the process had a marked impact on the degradation of the organic constituents of the biomass and the appearance of distinct functional groups that contributed to the adsorption process of diclofenac sodium. Finally, the toxicity tests recognized that this adsorbent does not affect the germination of L. sativa species. Thus, this adsorbent may become a novel and viable option to be used in the removal of sodium diclofenac.

Abstract
Increasing population growth and rapid expansion of the industrialization of the world society have caused severe environmental pollution to the planet. This study was carried out in order to investigate the synthesis of biopolymeric texture nano adsorbent based on the Lentinan (LENT), Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) and Iron Oxide nanoparticles for the removal of environmental pollutants. The spherical structural morphology of Fe3O4@LENT/PVA nanocomposite has been determined by FE-SEM analyses. According to the obtained results from FTIR analyses, all absorption bands of the Fe3O4, LENT, and PVA, had been existed in nanocomposite and approved the successful formation of it. From EDS analysis, it has been revealed that 57.21 wt% Fe, 17.56 wt% C and 25.23 wt% O. Also, the XRD pattern of the nanocomposite, approved the presence of polymeric and magnetic parts with card no. JCPDS, 01-075-0033. The BET analysis has defined specific surface area (47 m2/g) and total pore volume (0.15 cm3/g). Moreover, high heterogeneity and structural stability of the fabricated Fe3O4@LENT/PVA nanocomposite have been proven by TGA. Besides, VSM analysis measured great magnetic property of the nanocomposite (48 emu/g). Also, the Fe3O4@LENT/PVA nanocomposite potential for effective removal of malathion (MA), Diazinon (DA), and Diclofenac (DF) from watery solution has studied by an experiment based on the efficacy of adsorbent dosage, pH, and temperature. The adsorption kinetics of three pollutants had investigated using pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO) and intra-particle diffusion (IPD) velocity equations, the results showed that the kinetics followed PSO velocity equations. Also, the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubbin-Radushkevich (D-R) and Temkin isotherm models had investigated, and the adsorption isotherm was adopted from the Langmuir model. The results demonstrated that in the presence of Fe3O4@LENT/PVA nanocomposite, at the optimal conditions (contact time = 180 min, pH = 5, nanocomposite dosage = 0.20 g/L and temperature of 298 K) the maximum adsorption capacity of MA, DF, and DA were 101.57, 153.28, and 102.75 mg/g, respectively. The antibacterial features of the Fe3O4@LENT/PVA nanocomposite, had evaluated by Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria, but the result did not show any antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Diclofenac is a worldwide consumed drug included in the watch list of substances to be monitored according to the European Union Water Framework Directive (Directive 2013/39/EU). Aerobic granular sludge sequencing batch reactors (AGS-SBR) are increasingly used for wastewater treatment but there is scant information on the fate and effect of micropollutants to nutrient removal processes. An AGS-SBR fed with synthetic wastewater containing diclofenac was bioaugmented with a diclofenac degrading bacterial strain and performance and microbial community dynamics was analysed. Chemical oxygen demand, phosphate and ammonia removal were not affected by the micropollutant at 0.03 mM (9.54 mg L-1). The AGS was able to retain the degrading strain, which was detected in the sludge throughout after augmentation. Nevertheless, besides some adsorption to the biomass, diclofenac was not degraded by the augmented sludge given the short operating cycles and even if batch degradation assays confirmed that the bioaugmented AGS was able to biodegrade the compound. The exposure to the pharmaceutical affected the microbial community of the sludge, separating the two first phases of reactor operation (acclimatization and granulation) from subsequent phases. The AGS was able to keep the bioaugmented strain and to maintain the main functions of nutrient removal even through the long exposure to the pharmaceutical, but combined strategies are needed to reduce the spread of micropollutants in the environment.

Abstract
The contamination of water by pharmaceutical pollutants is a major issue these days due to excessive use of these ingredients in modern life. This study evaluated the adsorption and effectiveness of a low-cost composite prepared from heavy sugarcane ash (HSA) fused with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and functionalized with iron (Fe3+) in a dynamic system through a fixed-bed column. The solution of synthetic drugs was prepared and placed in a reservoir, using a peristaltic pump the solution is run onto the fixed bed column at a flow rate of 2 mL min-1. Saturation time and adsorption capacity were evaluated by centrifugation and extraction after a regular interval of 2 h from the adsorption column. The samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the data was modeled for quantification. For DIC removal, an adsorption capacity of 324.34 μg. g-1 and a saturation time of 22 h were observed, while the adsorption capacity of NAP was 956.49 μg. g-1, with a saturation time of 8 h. Thus, the PETSCA/Fe3+ adsorbent proved to be quite efficient for removing the pharmaceutical pollutants, with a longer period of operation for DIC removal. These findings suggested that a highly efficient bed column made from a less expensive waste material and could be used to remove hazardous pharmaceutical contaminants.

Abstract
Every year, a considerable volume of medications is consumed. Because these medications are not entirely eliminated in the sewage treatment plants and impact the surface waterways, the environmental pollution problem arises. This study objective was to evaluate the possibility of using an absorbent material made with of polyethylene terephthalate and sugarcane bagasse ash functionalized with iron oxide (PETSCA/Fe3+) in the removal of naproxen from water. The feasibility of having viable features in becoming an efficient adsorbent was first determined. The batch test was performed, allowing the dose effect, adsorption kinetics, and isotherm models to be evaluated. The determination of naproxen (NAP) concentration in water was analyzed on a high-performance liquid chromatograph and Langmuir method best represented the adsorption isotherm model. PETSCA/Fe3+ adsorbent material demonstrated potential in the naproxen removal at a low cost. The batching process was satisfactory, with 0.30 g of composite being the optimum fit for the system. The adsorption kinetics was determined and described by the pseudo second order model, with an average correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.974. The adsorption system model was best represented by the Langmuir isotherm curve. Moreover, adsorption in the presence of H2O2 had a positive impact on the process, removing 81.9% of NAP, whereas the process without H2O2 did not remove more than 62.0% of NAP. Therefore, because of its good qualities for NAP removal, PETSCA/Fe3+ is recommended as adsorbent material, primarily in small-volume water filtration systems.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride modified by molybdenum trioxide (g-C3N4/MoO3) as a nanohybrid was synthesized by co-precipitation method. Here, g-C3N4/MoO3 nanohybrid was used for the first time as an adsorbent for the pharmaceutical drug, diclofenac, (an aqueous micropollutant) from water to mitigate its possible environmental toxic effects. Compared to pristine components, the nanohybrid exhibited better adsorptive removal of diclofenac. Adsorption was enhanced with increment in MoO3 content from 1 to 3 wt %; however further increment in MoO3 content resulted in lower adsorption capacity due to agglomeration of MoO3 particles over g-C3N4. 162 mg g−1 adsorption capacity was achieved for 300 mg L−1 diclofenac in solution with 1 g L−1 adsorbent at pH = 6. Adsorption of diclofenac over g-C3N4 /MoO3 followed pseudo 2nd order kinetics. Temkin, Langmuir, Dubinin Radushkevich and Freundlich isotherm models were applied on the experimental results concluding that diclofenac adsorption over g-C3N4/MoO3 followed the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption mechanism could be explained by the π–π interaction between aromatic rings of diclofenac and g-C3N4/MoO3 (3%) nanohybrid, which is also evident by the FTIR results. This study presents the facile fabrication of a 2nd generation adsorbent for the treatment of diclofenac contaminated water that may as well help achieve the removal of other micropollutants form water.
