Influence of aging on molecular motion in PBAT-thermoplastic starch blends studied using solid-state NMR

Enhanced compatibility and functionality of thermoplastic cassava starch blended PBAT blown films with erythorbate and nitrite

Improved miscibility between thermoplastic starch (TPS) and polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) enhances processability and properties of TPS-based biodegradable plastic packaging. This research investigated compatibility and functionality of TPS/PBAT (50/50) blends with sodium nitrite and sodium erythorbate (1-5%) via blown film extrusion. Film morphology and mechanical and barrier properties were investigated. Sodium nitrite and sodium erythorbate improved processing efficiency of TPS, modified film flexibility and enhanced physical and chemical compatibility between TPS and PBAT matrices via hydrolysis, confirmed by ¹H NMR and ATR-FTIR analyses. These chemical reactions also affected thermal and phase transition behaviors. Increased starch granule dispersion caused smoother microstructure, resulting in higher oxygen barrier. Sodium nitrite and sodium erythorbate functionalized TPS/PBAT films reduced discoloration of packaged cured meat during storage at 4 °C for 9 days. These compounds provided extra functionality and improved compatibility between TPS and PBAT biodegradable plastic blends for novel and sustainable food packaging.

Influence of Air Humidity Level on the Structure and Mechanical Properties of Thermoplastic Starch-Montmorillonite Nanocomposite during Storage

Thermoplastic starch (TPS) consisting of corn starch and glycerol as a plasticizer, and TPS-montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite were stored at room temperature in the air with relative humidities (RH) of 11, 55 and 85% for seven weeks. Mechanical testing and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) were performed to detect changes in their mechanical properties. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy monitoring the changes in molecular mobility in the samples provided an insight into relations between mechanical properties and local structure. The results of mechanical testing indicated that the addition of MMT results in the increase in the tensile strength and Young's modulus while elongation at break decreased, indicating the reinforcing effect of MMT. DMTA experiments revealed a decrease in glass transition temperature of starch-rich phase below room temperature for samples stored at higher RH (55 and 85%). This indicates that absorbed water molecules had additional plasticizing effect on starch resulting in higher mobility of starch chain segments. Recrystallization in these samples was deduced from the shape of cross-polarization magic-angle spinning ¹³C NMR spectra. The shape of broad-line ¹H NMR spectra reflected changes in molecular mobility in the studied samples during seven weeks of storage and revealed that a high amount of water molecules impacts the starch intermolecular hydrogen bond density.

Dielectric Responses of Polyurethane/Zinc Oxide Blends for Dry-Type Cast Cold-Curing Resin Transformers

The influence of different concentrations (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt.%) of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) filler on the dielectric properties of the cold-curing polyurethane (PU) resin is presented in this study. For this purpose, the direct DC conductivity and the broadband dielectric spectroscopy measurements were used to describe the changes in dielectric responses of PU/ZnO nanocomposites over the frequency and temperature range, respectively. It can be stated that, the 1.0 wt.% nanoparticles and lower caused a decrease in the real relative permittivity compared to the pure PU resin, while the higher concentration of nanoparticles for frequencies above 1 Hz had the opposite effect. The presence of nanoparticles in the polyurethane resin affected the segmental dynamics of the polymer chain and changed a charge distribution in the given system. These changes caused a shift of local relaxation peaks in the spectra of imaginary permittivity and dissipation factor of nanocomposites. It is suggested that the temperature-dependent transition of the electric properties in the nano-composite is closely associated with the α-relaxation and intermediate dipolar effects (IDE).
