Abstract
Fifteen novel antioxidant peptides were identified from Asian swamp eel (ASE) hydrolysate through in silico screening, demonstrating ABTS and ORAC activities ranging from 1.17 to 3.28 and 1.94 to 5.67 times higher than Trolox, respectively. Concurrently, four new sequences (AVLW, VWPS, VPWP, and HWDGSLPR) were discovered. The critical role of the hydrogen atom on the tryptophan indole nitrogen in ABTS radical scavenging was elucidated by quantum chemical calculations and subsequent active site methylation experiments, while the significance of hydrogen atoms on both the tryptophan indole nitrogen and tyrosine phenolic hydroxyl groups for ORAC values was emphasized. Moreover, molecular docking analysis demonstrated that ASE antioxidant peptides primarily interacted with myeloperoxidase (MPO) via hydrogen bonds with Arg405, Arg499, Arg590, Gln257, Glu268, His261, and Thr266, and electrostatic interactions with Arg405, Arg590, Glu268, His261, and His502, resulting in a tight binding to MPO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Saffron petals are usually considered as waste after saffron harvest. However, saffron petals contain many important phytochemical components (e.g. quercetin and kaempferol), which may alleviate oxidative damage in human cells. RESULTS The contents of flavonoids and crocin in different parts of saffron were analyzed. The protective effects of flavonoids from saffron on oxidative damage of B16 cells were investigated. Saffron stigma contained high contents of crocin and picrocrocin, whereas flavonoid content (quercetin, 4.03 ± 0.33 mg g-1 DW; kaempferol, 47.80 ± 0.60 mg g-1 DW) was higher in saffron petals than in other parts. Incubation of B16 cells with quercetin (10-30 μmol L-1) and kaempferol (20-30 μmol L-1) obtained from saffron extracts could significantly increase the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and the activity of NADPH:dehydrogenase quinone-1 (NQO1) to alleviate H2O2-induced oxidative damage. Quercetin was better than kaempferol in increasing NQO1 activity and T-AOC. Quercetin extracted from saffron petals could induce NQO1 expression through regulating kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 signaling pathway to protect B16 cells from oxidative damage. CONCLUSION The content of kaempferol-3-O-sophoroside and quercetin-3-O-sophoroside was higher in saffron petals than in other parts of saffron. The kaempferol and quercetin obtained from saffron petals could enhance the activity of antioxidant enzyme NQO1 and T-AOC in B16 cells. This indicated that saffron petals, as a potential functional food, may prevent diseases caused by oxidative stress. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Elaeagnus moorcroftii Wall. ex Schlecht (EWS) as a suitable food matrix contains abundant flavonoids for promoting human health, this study aimed to use flavonoid-targeted metabolomics and transcriptome sequencing to investigate the transformation of flavonoids in EWS juice (EWSJ) by mono- and mixed-cultures fermentations of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN-3 (B.an3) and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei YL-29 (L.cp29). A total of 33 flavonoids were identified in mono- and mixed-cultures fermented EWSJ. Among them, fermentation by B.an3 produced specific deglycosylation products (kaempferol (17.6 mmol/L) and luteolin (4.5 mmol/L)) and methoxylation products (syringaldehyde (59.05 mmol/L)), and fermentation by L.cp29 resulted in a specific deglycosylation product (quercetin (9.2 mmol/L)). The co-culture fermentation further increased the levels of isorhamnetin (52.3 mmol/L), and produced a specific product (homoplantaginin (0.03 mmol/L)), which significantly increased the bioactive-form flavonoids. Moreover, we analyzed changes in different flavonoid metabolites and differential genes before and after fermentation. After L.cp29 fermentation the expression of glycoside hydrolases and oxidoreductases were increased compared to other groups. After B.an3 fermentation the expression of isomerases and synthetases were increased compared to other groups. In particular, 6-phosphogluconolactonase (Pgl) and glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (Pgi) were increased in B.an3 fermentation. Thus, we validated the predicted transformation reactions by the biotransformation of flavonoids by the collected strains and crude enzyme extracts of B.an3 and L.cp29. These findings provided a basis for the development of functional plant-based foods with enhanced bioactive flavonoids.

Abstract
Alcoholic liver injury (ALI) accounts for a major share of the global burden of non-viral liver disease. In the absence of specialized medications, research on using fruit flavonoids as a treatment is gaining momentum. This study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of four fruits rich in structurally diverse flavonoids: ougan (Citrus reticulata cv. Suavissima, OG), mulberry (Morus alba L., MB), apple (Malus × domestica Borkh., AP), and turnjujube (Hovenia dulcis Thunnb., TJ). A total of one flavanone glycoside, three polymethoxyflavones, two anthocyanins, one flavonol glycoside, and one dihydroflavonol were identified through UPLC analysis. In an acute ethanol-induced ALI mouse model, C57BL/6J mice were supplemented with 200 mg/kg·BW/day of different fruit extracts for three weeks. Our results showed that the four extracts exhibited promising benefits in improving lipid metabolism disorders, iron overload, and oxidative stress. RT-PCR and Western blot tests suggested that the potential mechanism may partially be attributed to the activation of the NRF2-mediated antioxidant response and the inhibition of ferroptosis pathways. Furthermore, fruit extracts administration demonstrated a specific regulatory role in intestinal microecology, with increases in beneficial bacteria such as Dubosiella, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium. Spearman correlation analysis revealed strong links between intestinal flora, lipid metabolism, and iron homeostasis, implying that the fruit extracts mitigated ALI via the gut microbiota-liver axis. In vitro experiments reaffirmed the activity against ethanol-induced oxidative damage and highlighted the positive effects of flavonoid components. These findings endorse the prospective application of OG, MB, AP, and TJ as dietary supplements or novel treatments for ALI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Late-ripening citrus plays an important role in the stability of the global citrus industry. However, the regreening phenomenon in Valencia oranges impacts the peel color and commercial value. Ethylene degreening is an effective technique to improve the color of citrus fruits, but this effect may be delayed in regreened oranges. To better clarify this phenomenon, plastid morphology, pigment and phytohormone content in ethephon-degreened Midknight Valencia oranges harvested in different stages were evaluated. RESULTS Results showed that in fruits harvested at the turning stage, ethephon degreening treatment induced a chloroplast-to-chromoplast transition, and chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid accumulation were accelerated. Conversely, in fruits harvested at the regreening stage, the changes in plastid morphology were minimal, with delayed changes in chlorophyll and carotenoids. Genes related to ethylene biosynthesis and signaling pathways supported these responses. Variations in endogenous auxin, jasmonic acid, abscisic acid and gibberellins could partially explain this phenomenon. CONCLUSION The response of Midknight Valencia oranges to ethephon degreening was delayed in the regreening stage, possibly due to the dynamic variations in endogenous phytohormones. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Arrhythmia occurs as a common heart vascular disease. Functional food is a rich source of natural compounds with significant pharmacological, The aim of this paper is to explore its effect on arrhythmia. METHODS By reviewing the literature and summarising the findings, we described the role of functional foods in the alleviation of cardiac arrhythmias from different perspectives. RESULTS Our study shows that functional foods have anti-arrhythmic effects through modulation of ion channels, oxidative stress, and Calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II. CONCLUSIONS We summarize the mechanism of arrhythmia inhibition by the active ingredients of medicinal diets in this review article, intending to provide research ideas for dietary therapy to regulate arrhythmia.

Abstract
Research on citrus plants is the result of increasing interest in the discovery of plant species with potential insect-repellent properties. Insect-repelling ability can be achieved by the numerous ubiquitous citrus species. This is mainly due to the presence of phytochemicals such as limonene, citronellol, citral, and α-pinene. These phytochemicals' composition varies depending on the geographical location of the plant. The extraction method dictates the configuration of attainable phytochemicals while the dosage affects the repellency potential. Therefore, developing insect repellent involved a number of observations related to the identification of both citrus plant phytochemical composition present in the different parts of the plant and the repellency potential of these phytochemicals in advance. Conversely, the development of repellent methods that go beyond conventional methods has been made possible by scientific developments including modern strategies such as encapsulation, the preparation of emulsion, and the incorporation of repellents into textiles. Therefore, this review article intends to probe into the aforementioned information and provide a sound insight into citrus-based repellent development in the future.

Abstract
Salvia miltiorrhiza and Salvia prattii seeds are rich in metabolites that are beneficial to human health and can be utilised as nutritional supplements. In this study, UPLC-MS and GC-MS based on extensively focused metabolomics were used to compare the seed metabolomics of the two species. LC-MS detected 118 metabolites, primarily Lipids and phenylpropanoids. GC- MS detected a total of 188 metabolites, mainly organic acids and their derivatives, of which Salvia prattii seeds contain high levels of nutrients. In addition, we experimentally determined antioxidant activity of two Salvia species, and the results showed that the antioxidant activity of Salvia prattii seeds was about twice as high as that of Salvia miltiorrhiza seeds. We used WGCNA to group the metabolites, and found the central metabolites in the focal modules including flavonoids and terpenoids. Our study contributes valuable knowledge for future research on the chemical makeup of Salvia prattii seeds.

Abstract
UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) play a crucial role in the glycosylation of secondary metabolites in plants, which is of significant importance for growth and response to biotic or abiotic stress. Despite the wide identification of UGT family members in various species, limited information is available regarding this family in citrus. In this study, we identified 87 UGT genes from the Citrus sinensis genome and classified them into 14 groups. We characterized their gene structures and motif compositions, providing insights into the molecular basis underlying discrepant functions of UGT genes within each evolutionary branch. Tandem duplication events were found to be the main driving force behind UGT gene expansion. Additionally, we identified numerous cis-acting elements in the promoter region of UGT genes, including those responsive to light, growth factors, phytohormones, and stress conditions. Notably, light-responsive elements were found with a frequency of 100 %. We elucidated the expression pattern of UGTs during fruit development in Citrus aurantium using RNA-seq and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), revealing that 10 key UGT genes are closely associated with biosynthesis of bitter flavanone neohesperidosides (FNHs). Furthermore, we identified Ca1,2RhaT as a flavonoid 1-2 rhamnosyltransferase (1,2RhaT) involved in FNHs biosynthesis for the first time. Isolation and functional characterization of the gene Ca1,2RhaT from Citrus aurantium in vitro and in vivo indicated that Ca1,2RhaT encoded a citrus 1,2RhaT and possessed rhamnosyl transfer activities. This work provides comprehensive information on the UGT family while offering new insights into understanding molecular mechanisms regulating specific accumulation patterns of FNHs or non-bitter flavanone rutinosides (FRTs) in citrus.

Abstract
The cross-talk between plant-derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) and mammalian cells has been explored by several investigations, underlining the capability of these natural nanovesicles to regulate several molecular pathways. Additionally, PDNVs possess biological proprieties that make them applicable against pathological conditions, such as hepatic diseases. In this study we explored the antioxidant properties of lemon-derived nanovesicles, isolated at laboratory (LNVs) and industrial scale (iLNVs) in human healthy hepatocytes (THLE-2) and in metabolic syndrome induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in the rat. Our findings demonstrate that in THLE-2 cells, LNVs and iLNVs decrease ROS production and upregulate the expression of antioxidant mediators, Nrf2 and HO-1. Furthermore, the in vivo assessment reveals that the oral administration of iLNVs improves glucose tolerance and lipid dysmetabolism, ameliorates biometric parameters and systemic redox homeostasis, and upregulates Nrf2/HO-1 signaling in HFD rat liver. Consequently, we believe LNVs/iLNVs might be a promising approach for managing hepatic and dysmetabolic disorders.

Abstract
Plant pathogenic fungi frequently disrupt the normal physiological and biochemical functions of plants, leading to diseases, compromising plant health, and ultimately reducing crop yield. This study aimed to address this challenge by identifying antifungal agents with innovative structures and novel mechanisms of action. We designed and synthesized a series of flavonoid derivatives substituted with 5-sulfonyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole and evaluated their antifungal activity against five phytopathogenic fungi. Most flavonoid derivatives demonstrated excellent antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea), Alternaria solani (A. solani), Rhizoctorzia solani (R. solani), Fusarium graminearum (F. graminearum), and Colletotrichum orbiculare (C. orbiculare). Specifically, the EC50 values of 38 target compounds against R. solani were below 4 μg/mL, among which the compounds C13 (EC50 = 0.49 μg/mL), C15 (EC50 = 0.37 μg/mL), and C19 (EC50 = 0.37 μg/mL) had the most prominent antifungal activity, superior to that of the control drug carbendazim (EC50 = 0.52 μg/mL). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the cellular ultrastructures of R. solani mycelia and cells after treatment with the compound C19 revealed sprawling growth of hyphae, a distorted outline of their cell walls, and reduced mitochondrial numbers. Studying the 3D-QSAR between the molecular structure and antifungal activity of 5-sulfonyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-substituted flavonoid derivatives could significantly improve conventional drug molecular design pathways and facilitate the development of novel antifungal leads.

Abstract
Myricetin (1), Quercetin (2), Kaempferol (3) and Kaempferide (4) were flavonoids with phenolic hydroxyl groups. The antioxidant and pharmacological mechanisms of them were investigated in detail. The lowest hydroxyl dissociation enthalpies of 1, 2, 3 and 4 were calculated by DFT, respectively. The hydroxyl dissociation enthalpies of the four flavonoids at the O2 site are the highest. By analyzing the intramolecular hydrogen bonds and HOMO-LUMO orbitals of the four flavonoids, the reasons for their divergence of hydroxyl dissociation enthalpies and antioxidant mechanisms were further investigated. The UV-vis and IR spectra of four flavonoids were compared. The interactions about electrostatic attraction, p-π conjugation and hydrogen bond combined the flavonoid with the target protein closely. The root mean square deviation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ combined with 1, 2 and 3 increased, while that of PPARγ combined with 4 decreased.

Abstract
Direct surface analysis in ambient conditions provides information on the position and chemical composition of an object at the time of investigation. An angled sampling probe is developed in this work for direct analysis in real time (DART) ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry. The DART ion source and the interface were modified for improved surface resolution, increased ion transfer efficiency, as well as enabling two-dimensional surface scanning. The angled probe DART-MS system was used for investigating a variety of food samples including fruit peels, ginseng root, plant leaves and sections of radish. Abundant signals and distinct chemical profiles are obtained in seconds, and spatial distribution of different molecules across the sample surfaces can be observed. In addition, the developed system can quickly identify the chemical changes when the surfaces were treated. The method is capable of directly evaluating food sample surfaces with different shapes, hardness, and conditions, without any sample pretreatments.

Abstract
O-Glycosylflavonoids exhibit diverse biological activities but their low content in plants is difficult to extract and isolate, and chemical synthesis steps are cumbersome, which are harmful to the environment. Therefore, the biosynthesis of O-glycosylflavonoids represents a green and sustainable alternative strategy, with glycosyltransferases playing a crucial role in this process. However, there are few studies on flavone 5-O-glycosyltransferases, which limits the synthesis of rare flavone 5-O glycosides by microorganisms. In this study, we characterized a highly regioselectivity flavone 5-O glycosyltransferase from Panicum hallii. Site-directed mutagenesis at residue P141 switches glucosylation to xylosylation. Using a combinatorial strategy of metabolic engineering, we generated a series of Escherichia coli recombinant strains to biocatalyze glycosylation of the typical flavone apigenin. Ultimately, further optimization of transformation conditions, apigenin-5-O-glucoside and apigenin-5-O-xyloside were biosynthesized for the first time so far, and the yields were 1490 mg/L and 1210 mg/L, respectively. This study provides a biotechnological component for the biosynthesis of flavone-5-O-glycosides, and established a green and sustainable approach for the industrial production of high-value O-glycosylflavones by engineering, which lays a foundation for their further development and application in food and pharmaceutical fields.

Abstract
Background: Aging is a natural biological process influenced by multiple factors and is a significant contributor to various chronic diseases. Slowing down the aging process and extending health span have been pursuits of the scientific field. Methods: Examination of the effects of dietary polyphenols on hallmarks of aging such as genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, disabled macroautophagy, deregulated nutrient-sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, chronic inflammation, and dysbiosis. Results: Polyphenols, abundant in nature, exhibit numerous biological activities, including antioxidant effects, free radical scavenging, neuroprotection, and anti-aging properties. These compounds are generally safe and effective in potentially slowing aging and preventing age-related disorders. Conclusions: The review encourages the development of novel therapeutic strategies using dietary polyphenols to create holistic anti-aging therapies and nutritional supplements.

Abstract
Orange (Citrus sinensis L.) is a common fruit crop widely distributed worldwide with the peel of its fruits representing about 50% of fruit mass. In the current study, orange peel was employed to mediate the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in a low-cost green approach. Aqueous extracts of suitably-processed peel were prepared using different extraction methods; and their phytochemical profile was identified. Based on phytochemical screening, amount of main phytochemicals, free radical-scavenging ability, reducing power and antioxidant activity, the peel extract prepared by boiling seemed to be the most promising. Thus, major compounds of this extract were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Potency of the peel extract to mediate the synthesis of AgNPs was then monitored by visual observation, UV-visible spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy and zetametry. Color change of the reaction mixture to brown and absorption peak at 450 nm indicated AgNPs formation. Characterization of AgNPs revealed spherical shape, size of 30-40 nm, zeta potential of -18.2 mV and yield conversion of 82%. The as-synthesized AgNPs had antioxidant capacity (free radical-scavenging ability, reducing power and antioxidant activity) lower than that of the orange peel extract. However, these biogenic AgNPs had antitumor activity (IC50 of 16 ppm against HCT-116 and 1.6 ppm against HepG2 cell lines) much higher than the peel extract that was completely non-toxic to the considered cell lines.

Abstract
Background Doxorubicin (DOX) is a highly effective chemotherapy drug widely used to treat cancer, but its use is limited due to multisystemic toxicity. Lipid metabolism is also affected by doxorubicin. Orange juice can reduce dyslipidemia in other clinical situations and has already been shown to attenuate cardiotoxicity. Our aim is to evaluate the effects of Pera orange juice (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) on mitigating lipid metabolism imbalance, metabolic pathways, and DOX induced cytotoxic effects in the heart and liver. Methods Twenty-four male Wistar rats were allocated into 3 groups: Control (C); DOX (D); and DOX plus Pera orange juice (DOJ). DOJ received orange juice for 4 weeks, while C and D received water. At the end of each week, D and DOJ groups received 4 mg/kg/week DOX, intraperitoneal. At the end of 4 weeks animals were submitted to echocardiography and euthanasia. Results Animals treated with DOX decreased water intake and lost weight over time. At echocardiography, DOX treated rats presented morphologic alterations in the heart. DOX increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides. It also reduced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, increased protein carbonylation in the heart and dihydroethidium (DHE) expression in the liver, decreased glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) and the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ1) in the heart, and reduced carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT1) in the liver. Conclusion DOX caused dyslipidemia, liver and cardiac toxicity by increasing oxidative stress, and altered energy metabolic parameters in both organs. Despite not improving changes in left ventricular morphology, orange juice did attenuate oxidative stress and mitigate the metabolic effects of DOX.

Abstract
Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (LJF, called Jinyinhua in China), comes from the dried flower buds or flowers to be opened of Lonicera japonica Thunb. in the Lonicera family. It has a long history of medicinal use and has a wide range of application prospects. As modern research advances, an increasing number of scientific experiments have demonstrated the anticancer potential of LJF. However, there is a notable absence of systematic reports detailing the anti-tumor effects of LJF. This review integrates the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with contemporary pharmacological techniques, drawing upon literature from authoritative databases such as PubMed, CNKI, and WanFang to conduct a comprehensive study of LJF. Notably, a total of 507 compounds have been isolated and characterized from the plant to date, which include volatile oils, organic acids, flavonoids, iridoids, triterpenes and triterpenoid saponins. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that LJF extract, along with components such as chlorogenic acid, luteolin, rutin, luteoloside, hyperoside and isochlorogenic acid, exhibits potential anticancer activities. Consequently, we have conducted a comprehensive review and summary of the mechanisms of action and clinical applications of these components. Furthermore, we have detailed the pharmacokinetics, quality control, and toxicity of LJF, while also discussing its prospective applications in the fields of biomedicine and preventive healthcare. It is hoped that these studies will provide valuable reference for the clinical research, development, and application of LJF.

Abstract
Rational regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a vital importance in maintaining homeostasis of living biological systems. For ROS-related pathologies, chemotherapy technology derived from metal nanomaterials currently occupies a pivotal position. However, they suffer from inherent issues such as complicated synthesis, batch-to-batch variability, high cost, and potential biological toxicity caused by metal elements. Here, we reported for the first time that dual-action 3,5-dihydroxy-1-ketonaphthalene-structured small-molecule enzyme imitator (DHKNase) exhibited 2-edged ROS regulation, catering to the execution of physiology-beneficial ROS destiny among diverse pathologies in living systems. Based on this, DHKNase is validated to enable remarkable therapeutic effects in 2 classic disease models, including the pathogen-infected wound-healing model and the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-caused inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This work provides a guiding landmark for developing novel natural small-molecule enzyme imitator and significantly expands their application potential in the biomedical field.

Abstract
Basic research shows that flavonoids have anti-inflammatory effects that influence rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in rats. Investigating potential dietary interventions for RA helps prevent the onset and progression of the disease. Clinical evidence on the association of flavonoid and subclass intake with RA is lacking. Using three survey cycles of 2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2017-2018 from the National Health and Nutrition Survey and the United States Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), we analyzed 7,419 American adults (≥20 years old). The values of flavonoid and subclass intake were calculated using FNDDS. The status questions for self-reported RA were from the NHANES codebook. Weighted analyses, revealed that among the 7,419 participants included in this study (mean age of 44.69 years [standard error, 0.40] and 3,584 [48.31%] were female), 408 met the classification criteria for RA. According to the multivariable logistic regression model, compared with the risk of RA in the first quartile (Q1), the risks of RA in the second quartile (Q2), the third quartile (Q3) and the fourth quartile (Q4) were lower (Q2: OR=0.55, 95% CI: 0.38-0.80; Q3: OR=0.66, 95% CI: 0.44-0.97; Q4: OR=0.64, 95% CI: 0.46-0.89; trend: P=.03). The association between total flavonoids and RA remained significant after full consideration of confounding factors. With regard to the subclasses of flavonoids, high flavanones intake was associated with low RA prevalence in Model 3 (Q3: OR= 0.60, 95% CI:0.39-0.92; Q4: OR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.32-0.99, trend: P=.02), but no such association was found in the other subclasses. Total flavonoids intake protected against RA, and the risk of developing RA decreased significantly with increasing intake of total flavonoids. Total flavonoids and flavanones were significantly associated with reduced RA risk for the American adult population. We highlighted the importance of employing diverse methodologies to assess the health effects of flavonoids.

Abstract
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (CRP) is a traditional herbal and food spice, the flavor and active compounds content of Xinhui CRP improves with aging. To investigate the pattern of microbial community succession during the aging of Xinhui CRP and its correlation with changes in flavor compounds, the high-throughput sequencing, HPLC, and GC-IMS were used to analyze the microbial community, flavonoids, and flavor compounds of five different aging years in this study. The results revealed different dominant microbial communities in Xinhui CRP at different aging time, and unclassified Bacteria were the predominant bacterial genus during 10-15 years of aging. As the aging time increases, the abundance of microbial community decreases and gradually stabilizes. At the fungal genus level, Xeromyces (>99 %) were the dominant genus during the 10-15 years aging time and had a significant correlation with polymethoxyflavones (PMFs), and the concentrations of PMFs increased with the progression of aging years. The GC-IMS results revealed distinctive flavor profiles in Xinhui CRP across different aging years, floral and fruity aromas, such as heptanal, 3-methyl-3-butenol, and 1-butanol, among others, with increasing aging years. A comprehensive correlation analysis further elucidates the close relationship between the core microorganism community and flavor formation in Xinhui CRP (p < 0.05). Notably, Pseudomonas and Escherichia Shigella exhibited significant correlations with beta-pinene and alpha-pinene, whereas Aureobasidium and Sarcopodium were associated with nerol and α-phellandrene (p < 0.05). This study provides new ideas for accelerating the good quality and flavor of Xinhui CRP during the aging process from the perspective of key microorganisms.

Abstract
Object To investigate the effects of Shen Qi Bu Qi Powder (SQBQP) on the average daily gain, blood indexes, gastrointestinal microflora, and serum metabolites of calves. Methods A total of 105 calves were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 35 per group): the control group (C, fed with a basal diet for 21 days) and two treatment groups (SQBQP-L and SQBQP-H, fed with the basal diet supplemented with 15 and 30 g/kg of SQBQP), respectively for 21 days. The active components of SQBQP were identified using LC-MS/MS. Serum digestive enzymes and antioxidant indices were determined by ELISA kits and biochemical kits, respectively. Serum differential metabolites were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), while flora in rumen fluid and fecal were analyzed by 16S rDNA sequencing. Further correlation analysis of gastrointestinal flora and serum metabolites of SQBQP-H and C groups were performed with Spearman's correlation. Results The principal active components of SQBQP mainly includes polysaccharides, flavonoids, and organic acids. Compared to the control group (C), calves in the SQBQP-H (high dose) and SQBQP-L (low dose) groups showed a significant increase in serum amylase (AMS) levels (P<0.001), while lipase content significantly decreased (P<0.05). Additionally, the average daily gain, T-AOC, and cellulase content of calves in the SQBQP-H group significantly increased (P<0.05). Proteobacteria and Succinivibrio in the rumen flora of the SQBQP-H group was significantly lower than that of the C group (P<0.05). The relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Candidatus_Saccharibacteria, Deinococcus_Thermus, Cyanobacteria, and Succinivibrio in the SQBQP-H group was significantly increased (P<0.05), while the relative abundance of Tenericutes and Oscillibacter was significantly decreased (P<0.05). Serum metabolomics analysis revealed 20 differential metabolites, mainly enriched in amino acid biosynthesis, β-alanine metabolism, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis metabolic pathways (P<0.05). Correlation analysis results showed that Butyrivibrio in rumen flora and Oscillibacter_valericigenes in intestinal flora were significantly positively correlated with average daily gain, serum biochemical indexes, and differential metabolite (-)-Epigallocatechin (R>0.58, P<0.05). Conclusion SQBQP can promote calves weight gain and enhance health by modulating gastrointestinal flora and metabolic processes in the body.

Abstract
Objective Carnation is a plant that holds high value in terms of its edibility, medicinal properties, and ornamental appeal. Creating no sense he aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antitumor properties of extracts derived from various parts of the carnation plant. Metabolomics technology was employed to identify the primary chemical constituents. Methods Initially, we measured the total phenolic and total flavonoid contents in carnation roots, stems, leaves, and flowers, followed by assessing the antioxidant and anti-tumor capabilities of each component using diverse experimental methods. Subsequently, UPLC-MS/MS was employed to identify metabolites in different parts of carnation and investigate their roles in antioxidant and anti-tumor activities. Results Mention numerical value- for better underatnding- Results of the study indicated that the methanol extract obtained from carnation flowers and roots exhibited superior antioxidant capacity compared to that from the stems and leaves. This disparity may be attributed to the abundance of polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidants present in the flowers, including methyl ferulate and luteolin-4'-O-glucoside. Furthermore, the significant presence of the anthraquinone compound rhein-8-O-glucoside in carnation roots may contribute to their enhanced antioxidant properties. Ten distinct compounds were isolated and recognized in carnation flowers, with Isoorientin 2"-O-rhamnoside and Kurarinone demonstrating notable antioxidant activity and binding affinity to SOD1 and SOD3, as validated through antioxidant screening and molecular docking. Conclusion Overall, the findings from this study have expanded our knowledge of the phytochemical composition across different anatomical regions of the carnation plant, providing valuable insights for its holistic utilization.

Abstract
Petrol vapors as important occupational and environmental pollutants can cause oxidative stress and may play a role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases along with the risk factors involved. This research is designed as a preliminary study to evaluate the protective effects of apigenin (APG) on oxidative stress caused by petrol vapors inhalation in rats. A total of 24 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups inside the inhalation chamber. Body weight changes and oxidative stress markers were investigated. The average body weight of the group exposed to petrol vapors was significantly lower compared to the other groups. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), content of oxidized-glutathione (GSSG), and Malondialdehyde were found to be higher in the petrol-inhaled group, while the content of reduced-glutathione (GSH) was lower compared to the other groups. APG administration did result in any significant improvement in these toxicities induced by petrol vapor. APG administration may ameliorate the petrol-induced oxidative stress. In chronic exposures, in addition to personal protection and engineering control, the use of compounds of natural origin may help in reducing the side effects (such as CNS) caused by exposure to petrol vapors.

Abstract
Sixteen novel antioxidant peptides from Asian swamp eel (ASE) were identified in previous studies. However, their chemical and cellular antioxidant mechanisms remain unclear. Molecular docking of these peptides with ABTS and DPPH radicals revealed the critical role of hydrogen bonding and Pi-Pi stacking hydrophobic interactions between hydrophobic amino acid residues and free radicals. Residues, such as tryptophan, proline, leucine, and valine, played significant roles in these interactions. All these peptides exhibited notable erythrocyte morphoprotective effects in a model of AAPH-induced oxidative damage of human erythrocytes. Erythrocyte hemolysis was reduced primarily through the modulation of both non-enzymatic (GSH/GSSG) and enzymatic antioxidant systems (SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px) by these peptides. A decrease in levels of MDA, LDH release, and hemoglobin oxidation was observed. Among the peptides, VLYPW demonstrated superior chemical and cellular antioxidant activities, which may be attributed to its higher levels of tyrosine and tryptophan, as well as to its increased hydrophobic amino acid content.

Abstract
Primary Sjögren's Syndrome (pSS) is a systemic autoimmune disease that leads to reduced saliva production, primarily affecting women due to estrogen deficiency. The estrogen receptor α (ERα) plays a crucial role in mediating the expression of the aquaporin 5 (AQP5) gene through the estrogen response element-dependent signaling pathway, making ERα a key drug target for pSS. Several flavonoids have been reported to have the potential to treat pSS. This study aimed to screen and compare flavonoids binding to ERα using AutoDock, providing a basis for treating pSS with flavonoids. The estrogenic potential of six representative flavonoids was examined in this study. Molecular docking revealed that the binding energy of all six flavonoids to ERα was less than -5.6 kcal/mol. Apigenin, naringenin, and daidzein were the top three flavonoids with even lower binding energies of -7.8, -8.09, and -8.59 kcal/mol, respectively. Similar to the positive control estradiol, apigenin, naringenin, and daidzein showed hydrogen bond interactions with GLU353, GLY521, and HIS524 at the active site. The results of luciferase reporter assays demonstrated that apigenin, naringenin, and daidzein significantly enhanced the transcription of estrogen receptor element (ERE) in the PGL3/AQP5 promoter. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations using GROMACS for a time scale of 100 ns revealed relatively stable binding of apigenin-ERα, naringenin-ERα, and daidzein-ERα. Mechanistically, homology modeling indicated that GLU353, GLY521, and HIS524 were the key residues of ERα exerting an estrogenic effect. The therapeutic effect of apigenin on dry mouth in pSS models was further validated. In conclusion, these results indicate the estrogenic and pSS therapeutic potential of apigenin, naringenin, and daidzein.

Abstract
Seven novel antioxidant peptides (AWF, LWQ, WIY, YLW, LAYW, LPWG, and LYFY) exhibiting a superior activity compared to trolox were identified through in silico screening. Among these, the four peptides (WIY, YLW, LAYW, and LYFY) displayed notably enhanced performance, with ABTS activity 2.58-3.26 times and ORAC activity 5.19-8.63 times higher than trolox. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the phenolic hydroxyl group in tyrosine and the nitrogen-hydrogen bond in the indole ring of tryptophan serve as the critical sites for antioxidant activity. These findings likely account for the potent chemical antioxidant activity. The corn peptides also exerted a protective effect against AAPH-induced cytomorphologic changes in human erythrocytes by modulating the antioxidant system. Notably, LAYW exhibited the most pronounced cytoprotective effects, potentially due to its high content of hydrophobic amino acids.

Abstract
Volatile compounds are important determinants affecting fruit flavor. Previous study has identified a bud mutant of 'Ehime 38' (Citrus reticulata) with different volatile profile. However, the volatile changes between WT and MT during fruit development and underlying mechanism remain elusive. In this study, a total of 35 volatile compounds were identified in the pulps of WT and MT at five developmental stages. Both varieties accumulated similar and the highest levels of volatiles at stage S1, and showed a downward trend as the fruit develops. However, the total volatile contents in the pulps of MT were 1.4-2.5 folds higher than those in WT at stages S2-S5, which was mainly due to the increase in the content of d-limonene. Transcriptomic and RT-qPCR analysis revealed that most genes in MEP pathway were positively correlated with the volatile contents, of which DXS1 might mainly contribute to the elevated volatiles accumulation in MT by increasing the flux into the MEP pathway. Moreover, temporal expression analysis indicated that these MEP pathway genes functioned at different developmental stages. This study provided comprehensive volatile metabolomics and transcriptomics characterizations of a citrus mutant during fruit development, which is valuable for fruit flavor improvement in citrus.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, which is mainly caused by the damage of the structure and function of the central nervous system. At present, there are many adverse reactions in market-available drugs, which can't significantly inhibit the occurrence of AD. Therefore, the current focus of research is to find safe and effective therapeutic drugs to improve the clinical treatment of AD. Oxidative stress bridges different mechanism hypotheses of AD and plays a key role in AD. Numerous studies have shown that natural flavonoids have good antioxidant effects. They can directly or indirectly resist -oxidative stress, inhibit Aβ aggregation and Tau protein hyperphosphorylation by activating Nrf2 and other oxidation-antioxidation-related signals, regulating synaptic function-related pathways, promoting mitochondrial autophagy, etc., and play a neuroprotective role in AD. In this review, we summarised the mechanism of flavonoids inhibiting oxidative stress injury in AD in recent years. Moreover, because of the shortcomings of poor biofilm permeability and low bioavailability of flavonoids, the advantages and recent research progress of nano-drug delivery systems such as liposomes and solid lipid nanoparticles were highlighted. We hope this review provides a useful way to explore safe and effective AD treatments.

Abstract
Lung cancer stands as a formidable global health challenge, necessitating innovative therapeutic strategies. Polyphenols, bioactive compounds synthesized by plants, have garnered attention for their diverse health benefits, particularly in combating various cancers, including lung cancer. The advent of whole-genome and transcriptome sequencing technologies has illuminated the pivotal roles of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), operating at epigenetic, transcriptional, and posttranscriptional levels, in cancer progression. This review comprehensively explores the impact of polyphenols on both oncogenic and tumor-suppressive lncRNAs in lung cancer, elucidating on their intricate regulatory mechanisms. The comprehensive examination extends to the potential synergies when combining polyphenols with conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. Recognizing the heterogeneity of lung cancer subtypes, the review emphasizes the need for the integration of nanotechnology for optimized polyphenol delivery and personalized therapeutic approaches. In conclusion, we collect the latest research, offering a holistic overview of the evolving landscape of polyphenol-mediated modulation of lncRNAs in lung cancer therapy. The integration of polyphenols and lncRNAs into multidimensional treatment strategies holds promise for enhancing therapeutic efficacy and navigating the challenges associated with lung cancer treatment.

Abstract
Background Hyperlipidemia is a worldwide health problem and a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases; therefore, it imposes a heavy burden on society and healthcare. It has been reported that flavonoids can increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation, be anti-inflammatory, and reduce lipid factor levels, which may reduce the risk of hyperlipidemia. However, the relationship between the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and dietary flavonoid intake in the population remains unclear. Methods This study included 8,940 adults from the 2007-2010 and 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The relationship between dietary flavonoid intake and the prevalence of hyperlipidemia was analyzed using weighted logistic regression and weighted restricted cubic spline. Results We found an inverse relationship between subtotal catechins intake and hyperlipidemia prevalence in the third quartile [0.74 (0.56, 0.98), p = 0.04] compared with the first quartile. The prevalence of hyperlipidemia and total flavan-3-ol intake in the third quartile were inversely correlated [0.76 (0.59, 0.98), p = 0.03]. Total anthocyanin intake was inversely related to the prevalence of hyperlipidemia in the third quartile [0.77 (0.62, 0.95), p = 0.02] and the fourth quartile [0.77 (0.60, 0.98), p = 0.04]. The prevalence of hyperlipidemia was negatively correlated with total flavonols intake in the fourth quartile [0.75 (0.60, 0.94), p = 0.02]. Using restricted cubic splines analysis, we found that subtotal catechins intake and total flavan-3-ol intake had a nonlinear relationship with the prevalence of hyperlipidemia. Conclusion Our study may provide preliminary research evidence for personalizing improved dietary habits to reduce the prevalence of hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
The reduced antioxidant capacity of trans-resveratrol (Res) than the second generation of Res, namely pterostilbene (Pte), severely prohibits its in-depth intriguing radical-scavenging applications in food formulations. Herein, a unique chemical structure-dependent strategy was proposed to specifically enhance the radical scavenging activity of Res over Pte, relying on the two more hydroxyl groups on the A-benzene ring of Res, thus facilitating its binding with lactoferrin (LF) to form stable complexes through more hydrogen bonds. We prepared LF-Res and LF-Pte complexes, revealed their binding mechanisms by multispectral analysis and molecular docking/dynamics simulations, further evaluated their antioxidant properties via ABTS and DPPH assays and a model of inhibiting apple browning, eventually elucidated their structure-binding-property relationships. This contribution offers a new approach to restore the antioxidant capability of Res, also paves the way to precisely regulate the fascinating bioactivities of hydrophobic compounds by protein-binding in a chemical structure-, especially hydroxyl group-dependent manner.

Abstract
Aging is characterized by the progressive degeneration of bodily tissues and decline in physiological functions, a process that may be exacerbated by imbalances in intestinal flora. Soluble dietary fiber (PSDF) from Citrus unshiu peel has demonstrated strong free radical scavenging ability to regulate intestinal flora in vitro. However, further evidence is required to ascertain the effectiveness of PSDF in vivo. In our study, 8-week-old mice were artificially aged through subcutaneous injections of a 200 mg/kg/d D-galactose solution for 42 days, followed by a 28-day dietary intervention with varying doses of PSDF, insoluble dietary fiber (PIDF), and vitamin C. After the intervention, we observed a significant mitigation of D-galactose-induced oxidative stress, as evident by weight normalization and reduced oxidative damage. 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that PSDF significantly altered the composition of intestinal flora, increasing Firmicutes and reducing Bacteroidota percentages, while also enriching colonic short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Spearman correlation analysis further identified a positive correlation between Firmicutes and isovaleric acid, and negative correlations between Muribaculaceae and acetic acid, and between Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group and caproic acid. These findings support the potential of Citrus PSDF to alleviate oxidative stress.

Abstract
In recent years, Flammulina velutipes (F. velutipes) has attracted consequential attention in various research fields due to its rich composition of proteins, vitamins, amino acids, polysaccharides, and polyphenols. F. velutipes polysaccharides (FVPs) are considered as key bioactive components of F. velutipes, demonstrating multiple physiological activities, including immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Moreover, they offer health benefits such as antioxidant and anti-aging properties, which have exceptionally valuable clinical applications. Polysaccharides derived from different sources exhibit a wide range of biomedical functions and distinct biological activities. The varied biological functions of polysaccharides, coupled with their extensive application in functional foods and clinical applications, have prompted a heightened focus on polysaccharide research. Additionally, the extraction, deproteinization, and purification of FVPs are fundamental to investigate the structure and biological activities of polysaccharides. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the extraction, deproteinization, purification, characterization, and structural elucidation of FVPs. Furthermore, the biological activities and mechanisms of FVPs have been further explored through in vivo and in vitro experiments. This review aims to provide a theoretical foundation and guide future research and development of FVPs.

Abstract
Plant-derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) have recently emerged as natural delivery systems of biofunctional compounds toward mammalian cells. Considering their already described composition, anti-inflammatory properties, stability, and low toxicity, PDNVs offer a promising path for developing new preventive strategies for several inflammatory diseases, among which the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, we explore the protective effects of industrially produced lemon vesicles (iLNVs) in a rat model of IBD. Characterization of iLNVs reveals the presence of small particles less than 200 nm in size and a profile of bioactive compounds enriched in flavonoids and organic acids with known beneficial properties. In vitro studies on human macrophages confirm the safety and anti-inflammatory effects of iLNVs, as evidenced by the reduced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increased levels of anti-inflammatory markers. As evidenced by in vivo experiments, pre-treatment with iLNVs significantly alleviates symptoms and histological features in 2,4 dinitrobenzensulfuric acid (DNBS)-induced colitis in rats. Molecular pathway analysis reveals modulation of NF-κB and Nrf2, indicating anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Finally, iLNVs affects gut microbiota composition, improving the consistent colitis-related alterations. Overall, we demonstrated the protective role of industrially produced lemon nanovesicles against colitis and emphasized their potential in managing IBD through multifaceted mechanisms.

Abstract
Polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) are a class of abundant specialized metabolites with remarkable anticancer properties in citrus. Multiple methoxy groups in PMFs are derived from methylation modification catalyzed by a series of hydroxylases and O-methyltransferases (OMTs). However, the specific OMTs that catalyze the systematic O-methylation of hydroxyflavones remain largely unknown. Here, we report that PMFs are highly accumulated in wild mandarins and mandarin-derived accessions, while undetectable in early-diverging citrus species and related species. Our results demonstrated that three homologous genes, CreOMT3, CreOMT4, and CreOMT5, are crucial for PMF biosynthesis in citrus, and their encoded methyltransferases exhibit multisite O-methylation activities for hydroxyflavones, producing seven PMFs in vitro and in vivo. Comparative genomic and syntenic analyses indicated that the tandem CreOMT3, CreOMT4, and CreOMT5 may be duplicated from CreOMT6 and contributes to the genetic basis of PMF biosynthesis in the mandarin group through neofunctionalization. We also demonstrated that N17 in CreOMT4 is an essential amino acid residue for C3-, C5-, C6-, and C3'-O-methylation activity and provided a rationale for the functional deficiency of OMT6 to produce PMFs in early-diverging citrus and some domesticated citrus species. A 1,041-bp deletion in the CreOMT4 promoter, which is found in most modern cultivated mandarins, has reduced the PMF content relative to that in wild and early-admixture mandarins. This study provides a framework for reconstructing PMF biosynthetic pathways, which may facilitate the breeding of citrus fruits with enhanced health benefits.

Abstract
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) constitute approximately one-third of the global pharmaceutical market and are the first drugs of choice when treating fever and pain. Furthermore, among NSAIDs, the use of diclofenac sodium (DS) is preferred as it is a strong inhibitor of cyclooxygenase enzyme. However, despite its strong efficacy, DS is known for its potential to cause hepatorenal damage. Currently, to mitigate the adverse effects of certain drugs, medically effective agricultural products are often preferred as they are inexpensive, effective and safe. One such agricultural product-mandarin-is noteworthy for its high phenolic contents. The purpose of the present study was to assess the efficacy of mandarin peel ethanolic extract (MPEE) in protecting against hepatorenal damage induced by DS. Four groups (six/group) of adult male albino rats received oral administration of physiological saline (control group), DS (10 mg/kg body weight), MPEE (200 mg/kg body weight), and DS + MPEE for 7 days. Rats in the DS group showed increased serum levels of ALT, AST, ALP, BUN, CRE, and UA. Furthermore, the hepatic and renal tissue levels of MDA, TNF-α and IL-1β increased, whereas those of GSH, SOD, GP-x and IL-10 decreased (p < 0.05). Investigation of MPEE in terms of its effects on biochemical, oxidative and inflammatory parameters, it exerted protective and healing effects. Therefore, MPEE can be used to ameliorate DS-induced hepatorenal damage.

Abstract
Citrus fruits have a thick outer coat which is often discarded due to its low economic value and usually contributes to the waste. So this work focused on exploring the potential pharmacological properties of the discarded citrus peels. In the present study, we extracted the essential oil from peel wastes of Citrus reticulata Blanco (CREO) from the local market. The antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer properties of essential oil were evaluated. The CREO exhibited a strong antioxidant property with DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, H2 O2 radical scavenging, Ferric reducing antioxidant power and for Lipid peroxidation inhibition respectively. Antibacterial properties of CREO was indicated against different pathogenic microbial strains like E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and S. enterica in terms of disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Further, anticancer properties studied on breast cancer cell lines MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity with IC50 of 56.67±3.12 μg/mL and 76.44±2.53 μg/mL respectively. The GC-MS analysis of CREO revealed the presence of major compounds like S-limonene, α-pinene, α-myrcene, and cis-terpinene which might have played a significant role in strong antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer properties. The study thus identified the potential health benefits of Citrus reticulata peel waste.

Abstract
The Hibiscus manihot L. (HML) Medic, an edible hibiscus of the Malvaceae family, is abundant with flavonoids. The study investigated how Rhizopus-arrhizus-31-assisted pretreatment affects the extraction and bioactivity of flavonoids from HML. The fiber structure of the fermented flavonoid sample (RFF) appears looser, more porous, and more disordered than the unfermented flavonoid sample (RUF). RFF demonstrates milder conditions and yields higher extraction rates. According to the Box-Behnken response surface optimization experiment, the optimal conditions for RFF include a material-liquid ratio of 1:41 g/mL, a 2 h extraction time, a 57% ethanol concentration, and an extraction temperature of 800 °C, resulting in a 3.69% extraction yield, which is 39.25% higher than that of RUF. Additionally, RFF exhibits greater activity than RUF in the radical-scavenging system. The IC50 values for DPPH, OH, and ABTS radicals are 83.43 μg/mL and 82.62 μg/mL, 208.38 μg/mL and 175.99 μg/mL, and 108.59 μg/mL and 75.39 μg/mL for RUF and RFF, respectively. UPLC-QTOF-MS analysis of the active components in the HML flavonoid sample revealed significant differences in the chromatograms of RUF and RFF, indicating that biofermentation led to substantial changes in composition and content from HML.

Abstract
Sepsis is a syndrome of organ dysfunction caused by an uncontrolled inflammatory response, which can seriously endanger life. Currently, there is still a shortage of specific therapeutic drugs. Quercetin and its natural derivatives have received a lot of attention recently for their potential in treating sepsis. Here, we provide a comprehensive summary of the recent research progress on quercetin and its derivatives, with a focus on their specific mechanisms of antioxidation and anti-inflammation. To obtain the necessary information, we conducted a search in the PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and Cochrane library databases using the keywords sepsis, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-infection, quercetin, and its natural derivatives to identify relevant research from 6315 articles published in the last five years. At present, quercetin and its 11 derivatives have been intensively studied. They primarily exert their antioxidation and anti-inflammation effects through the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB, Nrf2/ARE, and MAPK pathways. The feasibility of these compounds in experimental models and clinical application were also discussed. In conclusion, quercetin and its natural derivatives have good application potential in the treatment of sepsis.

Abstract
Anthocyanins are promising naturally occurring food preservatives for enhancing the quality of food products due to their excellent antioxidant properties. However, their low stability hinders their food packaging application. Here, we propose a facile strategy to achieve the improved stability of anthocyanins encapsulated in γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) with an in-depth exploration of their structure-property relationships. The adsorbed anthocyanins in CD-MOFs are stabilized by multiple cooperative non-covalent interactions including hydrogen bonding and van der Waals (vdW) interactions as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and spectroscopy analysis. Particularly, by ion-exchange of acetate ions into the pores of CD-MOFs, the resulting CD-MOFs (CD-MOF_OAc) shows a higher anthocyanins adsorption rate with a maximum loading capacity of 83.7 % at 1 min. Besides, CD-MOF_OAc possesses the more effective protecting effect on anthocyanins with at least two-fold enhancement of stability in comparison of free anthocyanins under heating and light irradiation. The anthocyanins encapsulated CD-MOFs films for fruit freshness was validated by the Kyoho experiment. This novel encapsulation system provides a new possibility for the potential use of CD-MOFs as the encapsulating material for anthocyanins in fruit preservation.

Abstract
Increasingly globally prevalent obesity and related metabolic disorders have underscored the demand for safe and natural therapeutic approaches, given the limitations of weight loss drugs and surgeries. This study compared the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of five different varieties of citrus physiological premature fruit drop (CPFD). Untargeted metabolomics was employed to identify variations in metabolites among different CPFDs, and their antilipidemic effects in vitro were assessed. The results showed that Citrus aurantium L. 'Daidai' physiological premature fruit drop (DDPD) and Citrus aurantium 'Changshan-huyou' physiological premature fruit drop (HYPD) exhibited higher levels of phytochemicals and stronger antioxidant activity. There were 97 differential metabolites identified in DDPD and HYPD, including phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, organic acids, terpenes, and lipids. Additionally, DDPD and HYPD demonstrated potential antilipidemic effects against oleic acid (OA)-induced steatosis in HepG2 hepatocytes and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In conclusion, our findings reveal the outstanding antioxidant activity and antilipidemic effects of CPFD, indicating its potential use as a natural antioxidant and health supplement and promoting the high-value utilization of this resource.

Abstract
Obesity is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality because it has a close relationship to metabolic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and some types of cancer. With no drugs available, the mainstay of obesity management remains lifestyle changes with exercise and dietary modifications. In light of the tremendous disease burden and unmet therapeutics, fresh perspectives on pathophysiology and drug discovery are needed. The development of epigenetics provides a compelling justification for how environmental, lifestyle, and other risk factors contribute to the pathogenesis of obesity. Furthermore, epigenetic dysregulations can be restored, and it has been reported that certain natural products obtained from plants, such as tea polyphenols, ellagic acid, urolithins, curcumin, genistein, isothiocyanates, and citrus isoflavonoids, were shown to inhibit weight gain. These substances have great antioxidant potential and are of great interest because they can also modify epigenetic mechanisms. Therefore, understanding epigenetic modifications to target the primary cause of obesity and the epigenetic mechanisms of anti-obesity effects with certain phytochemicals can prove rational strategies to prevent the disease and develop novel therapeutic interventions. Thus, the current review aimed to summarize the epigenetic mechanisms and advances in therapies for obesity based on natural products to provide evidence for the development of several potential anti-obesity drug targets.

Abstract
Background Traditional herbal medicine practitioners in the Ashanti region of Ghana use the fruit peels of Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck (C. limon) in preventive and curative treatment of many cancers including liver cancer. This ethnobotanical claim remains to be verified scientifically. Aim of the Study. This study investigated prophylactic hepatoprotective and anti-HCC effects of C. limon peel extract (LPE) in CCl4/olive oil-induced HCC-like rats. Materials and Methods After preparation of LPE, it was subjected to phytochemical screening using standard phytochemical methods. A total of 30 healthy adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (weighing 150-200 g) were randomly assigned into six groups of 5 rats each. Rats in the control group received olive oil (5 mL/kg ip) twice weekly for 16 weeks. Rats in the model group received CCl4/olive oil (2 mL/kg, ip) twice weekly for 16 weeks. Rats in capecitabine (10 mg/kg po) and LPE (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg po) groups received CCl4/olive oil (2 mL/kg, i.p) in the morning and their respective treatments in the afternoon twice a week for 16 weeks. Rats in all groups had free access to food and water ad libitum. Body weight and survival rates were monitored. Rats were sacrificed under deep anesthesia, blood was collected, and liver and other organs were isolated. Aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), prothrombin time, bilirubin, C-reactive protein (CRP), alpha- (α-) fetoprotein (AFP), and liver histology were assessed. Results Alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, and saponins were detected in LPE. Model rats demonstrated increased serum levels of AFP, CRP, ALP, GGT, ALT, and AST, prothrombin time, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, blood lymphocyte, and monocyte counts, but decreased serum albumin and total protein compared to control rats. Unlike the control, model rats demonstrated fat accumulation in periportal and centrilobular hepatocytes and neoplastic transformation. Semiquantitation of periodic acid Schiff- (PAS-) stained liver sections showed decreased glycogen storage in hepatocytes of model rats compared to control rats. Compared to the model, LPE treatment protected against CCl4-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, which was evidenced by decreased AFP, CRP, liver enzymes, total and direct bilirubin, prothrombin time, and blood lymphocyte and monocyte counts; attenuation of fat accumulation; and increased glycogen storage, albumin, and total protein. Conclusion LPE abates CCl4-induced hepatocarcinogenesis by attenuating liver inflammation and improving metabolic, biosynthetic, and detoxification functions of the liver. The prophylactic hepatoprotective and anti-hepatocarcinogenic effects of LPE are attributable to its phytochemical composition raising hopes of finding potential anticancer bioactive compounds from C. limon fruit peels.

Abstract
Flavonoids have been reported to be vital in treating various chronic disorders. Luteolin (3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyflavone) is a flavonoid present in a variety of plant sources such as celery, green pepper, olive oil, peppermint, thyme, rosemary, oregano, etc. It has been reported to have various pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-Alzheimer, antimicrobial, etc. Many scientific studies have been carried out on luteolin for its possible effects on diabetes and its associated complications. The present review focuses on the role of luteolin in diabetes mellitus and the associated complications. The antidiabetic impact of luteolin is linked with the increased expression of PPARγ and GLUT. Various in vitro and in vivo studies have been performed to explore the effects of luteolin on diabetic complications, and it has shown a significant impact in the management of the same.

Abstract
In this study, we compared the fruit quality and color of 'Kiyomi' (WT) and its mutant (MT) grafted on Ziyang xiangcheng (Cj) (WT/Cj, MT/Cj), and the MT grafted on Trifoliate orange (Pt) (MT/Pt). The differences in sugar, organic acid, flavonoids, phenols, and volatile substances of the three materials were also analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The results showed significant differences in the appearance of WT/Cj, MT/Cj, and MT/Pt. MT/Pt, compared to WT/Cj, MT/Cj, had lower sugar, acid, phenol and flavonoid contents in the pulp. However, MT/Pt pulp was higher in vitamin C (VC), and the peel had significantly higher total phenol and flavonoid contents. In terms of pulp, WT/Cj had the greatest diversity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). 4-methyl-1-pentanol was significantly higher in MT/Cj pulp, while MT/Pt pulp had a unique octanoic acid, methyl ester. VOCs were more diverse in the peels of the three materials. β-Myrcene and valencen were significantly higher in MT/Cj peels. In contrast, 16 unique VOCs were detected in MT/Pt, and D-limonene content was significantly higher than in WT/Cj and MT/Cj. The results suggest Trifoliate orange is a suitable rootstock for MT.

Abstract
Background: Myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury (MIRI) is a severe complication of revascularization therapy in patients with myocardial infarction. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to find more therapeutic solutions for MIRI. Recently, ferroptosis, which is characterized by lipid peroxidation, was considered a critical contributor to MIRI. Fucoxanthin (FX), a natural antioxidant carotenoid, which is abundant in brown seaweed, exerts protective effects under various pathological conditions. However, whether FX alleviates MIRI is unclear. This study aims to clarify the effects of FX on MIRI. Methods: Mice with left anterior descending artery ligation and reperfusion were used as in vivo models. Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCs) induced with hypoxia and reperfusion were used as in vitro models. TTC-Evans blue staining was performed to validate the infarction size. Transmission electron microscopy was employed to detect mitochondrial injury in cardiomyocytes. In addition, 4 weeks after MIRI, echocardiography was performed to measure cardiac function; fluorescent probes and western blots were used to detect ferroptosis. Results: TTC-Evans blue staining showed that FX reduced the infarction size induced by MIRI. Transmission electron microscopy showed that FX ameliorated the MIRI-induced myofibril loss and mitochondrion shrinkage. Furthermore, FX improved LVEF and LVFS and inhibited myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis after 4 weeks in mice with MIRI. In the in vitro study, calcein AM/PI staining and TUNEL staining showed that FX reduced cell death caused by hypoxia and reperfusion treatment. DCFH-DA and MitoSOX probes indicated that FX inhibited cellular and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, C11-BODIPY 581/591 staining, ferro-orange staining, MDA assay, Fe2+ assay, 4-hydroxynonenal enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and western blot were performed and the results revealed that FX ameliorated ferroptosis in vitro and in vivo, as indicated by inhibiting lipid ROS and Fe2+ release, as well as by modulating ferroptosis hallmark FTH, TFRC, and GPX4 expression. Additionally, the protective effects of FX were eliminated by the NRF2 inhibitor brusatol, as observed from western blotting, C11-BODIPY 581/591 staining, and calcein AM/PI staining, indicating that FX exerted cardio-protective effects on MIRI through the NRF2 pathway. Conclusion: Our study showed that FX alleviated MIRI through the inhibition of ferroptosis via the NRF2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Lignin, a by-product of processing lignocellulosic materials, has a polyphenolic structure and can be used as an antioxidant directly or synergistically with synthetic types of antioxidants, leading to different applications. Its antioxidant mechanism is mainly related to the production of ROS, but the details need to be further investigated. The antioxidant property of lignin is mainly related to the content of phenolic hydroxyl group, but methoxy, purity will also have an effect on it. In addition, different methods to detect the antioxidant properties of lignin have different advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, the antioxidant mechanism of lignin, the methods to determine the antioxidant activity and the progress of its application in various fields are reviewed. In addition, the current research on the antioxidant properties of lignin and the hot directions are provided, and an outlook on the research into the antioxidant properties of lignin is provided to broaden its potential application areas.

Abstract
The chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (Dox) is commonly used to treat various types of cancer, even though it can cause life-threatening cardiotoxicity. Clinically, there is no particularly effective way to treat Dox-induced cardiotoxicity. Therefore, it is imperative to identify compounds that can effectively alleviate Dox-induced cardiotoxicity. Ferroptosis and oxidative stress play a key role in Dox-induced cardiotoxicity, and the inhibition of ferroptosis and oxidative stress could effectively protect against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Taxifolin (TAX) is a flavonoid commonly found in onions and citrus fruits. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of TAX on Dox-induced cardiac injury and dysfunction and aimed to explore the mechanisms underlying these effects. Using a mouse model of Dox-induced cardiotoxicity, we administered 20 mg/kg/day of TAX by gavage for 2 weeks. A week after the first use of TAX, each mouse was administered a 10 mg/kg dose of Dox. TAX was first evaluated for its cardioprotective properties, and the outcomes showed that TAX significantly reduced the damage caused by Dox to the myocardium in terms of structural and functional damage by effectively inhibiting ferroptosis and oxidative stress. In vivo, echocardiography, histopathologic assay, serum biochemical analysis and western blotting was used to find the results that Dox promoted ferroptosis-induced cardiomyocyte death, while TAX reversed these effects. In vitro, we also found that TAX alleviated Dox-induced cardiotoxicity by using ROS/DHE staining assay, Cellular immunofluorescence and western blotting. TAX increasing expression of microRNA-200a (miR-200a) which affects ferroptosis by activating Nrf2 signaling pathway. We believe that TAX inhibits ferroptosis and is a potential phytochemical that prevents Dox-induced cardiotoxicity.

Abstract
The Cerrado biome is the world's largest and most diversified tropical savanna. Despite its diversity, there remains a paucity of scientific discussion and evidence about the medicinal use of Cerrado plants. One of the greatest challenges is the complexity of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, present in those plants and their extraction, purification, and characterization, which involves a wide range of approaches, tools, and techniques. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the search for accurately proven medicinal plants against cancer, a leading cause of death worldwide, has contributed to this growing area of research. This study set out to extract, purify, and characterize 3-O-methylquercetin isolated from the plant Strychnos pseudoquina A.St.-Hil. (Loganiaceae) and to test it for antiproliferative activity and selectivity against different tumor and nontumor human cell lines. A combined-method approach was employed using 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and theoretical calculations to extensively characterize this bioflavonoid. 3-O-methylquercetin melts around 275 °C and crystallizes in a nonplanar conformation with an angle of 18.02° between the pyran ring (C) and the phenyl ring (B), unlike quercetin and luteolin, which are planar. Finally, the in vitro cytotoxicity of 3-O-methylquercetin was compared with data from quercetin, luteolin, and cisplatin, showing that structural differences influenced the antiproliferative activity and the selectivity against different tumor cell lines.
