Carbon quantum dots in bioimaging and biomedicines

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are gaining a lot more attention than traditional semiconductor quantum dots owing to their intrinsic fluorescence property, chemical inertness, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and simple and inexpensive synthetic route of preparation. These properties allow CQDs to be utilized for a broad range of applications in various fields of scientific research including biomedical sciences, particularly in bioimaging and biomedicines. CQDs are a promising choice for advanced nanomaterials research for bioimaging and biomedicines owing to their unique chemical, physical, and optical properties. CQDs doped with hetero atom, or polymer composite materials are extremely advantageous for biochemical, biological, and biomedical applications since they are easy to prepare, biocompatible, and have beneficial properties. This type of CQD is highly useful in phototherapy, gene therapy, medication delivery, and bioimaging. This review explores the applications of CQDs in bioimaging and biomedicine, highlighting recent advancements and future possibilities to increase interest in their numerous advantages for therapeutic applications.

Elastomer Nanocomposites: Effect of Filler-Matrix and Filler-Filler Interactions

The reinforcement of elastomers is essential in the rubber industry in order to obtain the properties required for commercial applications. The addition of active fillers in an elastomer usually leads to an improvement in the mechanical properties such as the elastic modulus and the rupture properties. Filled rubbers are also characterized by two specific behaviors related to energy dissipation known as the Payne and the Mullins effects. The Payne effect is related to non-linear viscoelastic behavior of the storage modulus while the Mullins or stress-softening effect is characterized by a lowering in the stress when the vulcanizate is extended a second time. Both effects are shown to strongly depend on the interfacial adhesion and filler dispersion. The basic mechanisms of reinforcement are first discussed in the case of conventional rubber composites filled with carbon black or silica usually present in the host matrix in the form of aggregates and agglomerates. The use of nanoscale fillers with isotropic or anisotropic morphologies is expected to yield much more improvement than that imparted by micron-scale fillers owing to the very large polymer-filler interface. This work reports some results obtained with three types of nanoparticles that can reinforce rubbery matrices: spherical, rod-shaped and layered fillers. Each type of particle is shown to impart to the host medium a specific reinforcement on account of its own structure and geometry. The novelty of this work is to emphasize the particular mechanical behavior of some systems filled with nanospherical particles such as in situ silica-filled poly(dimethylsiloxane) networks that display a strong polymer-filler interface and whose mechanical response is typical of double network elastomers. Additionally, the potential of carbon dots as a reinforcing filler for elastomeric materials is highlighted. Different results are reported on the reinforcement imparted by carbon nanotubes and graphenic materials that is far below their expected capability despite the development of various techniques intended to reduce particle aggregation and improve interfacial bonding with the host matrix.

One-Pot Synthesis of Dual Color-Emitting CDs: Numerical and Experimental Optimization towards White LEDs

Carbon Dots (CDs) are fluorescent carbon-based nanoparticles that have attracted increasing attention in recent years as environment-friendly and cost-effective fluorophores. An application that can benefit from CDs in a relatively short-term perspective is the fabrication of color-converting materials in phosphor-converted white LEDs (WLEDs). In this work we present a one-pot solvothermal synthesis of polymer-passivated CDs that show a dual emission band (in the green and in the red regions) upon blue light excitation. A purposely designed numerical approach enables evaluating how the spectroscopic properties of such CDs can be profitable for application in WLEDs emulating daylight characteristics. Subsequently, we fabricate nanocomposite coatings based on the dual color-emitting CDs via solution-based strategies, and we compare their color-converting properties with those of the simulated ones to finally accomplish white light emission. The combined numerical and experimental approach can find a general use to reduce the number of experimental trial-and-error steps required for optimization of CD optical properties for lighting application.

Edge carboxylation-induced charge separation dynamics of graphene quantum dot/cellulose nanocomposites

Graphene quantum dot (GQD)@cellulose nanocomposites possess optoelectronic properties of interest for photovoltaic applications. However, the optoelectronic properties related to the shapes and edge types of GQDs have not been fully explored. In the present work, we investigate the effects of carboxylation on the energy alignment and charge separation dynamics at the interface of GQD@cellulose nanocomposites using density functional theory calculations. Our results show that the GQD@cellulose nanocomposites composed of hexagonal GQDs with armchair edges exhibit better photoelectric performance than those composed of other types of GQDs. Carboxylation stabilizes the energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the triangular GQDs with armchair edges but destabilizes the HOMO energy level of cellulose, resulting in hole transfer from the GQDs to cellulose upon photoexcitation. However, the calculated hole transfer rate is lower than the nonradiative recombination rate because excitonic effects dominate the dynamics of charge separation in GQD@cellulose nanocomposites.

Integration of Carbon Dots on Nanoflower Structured ZnCdS as a Cocatalyst for Photocatalytic Degradation

The application of catalysts is one of the most effective methods in the oil refining, chemical, medical, environmental protection, and other industries. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) were selected as an initiator and doped into the main catalyst, Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S, and a novel Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S@CD composite catalyst with a nanoflower structure was successfully obtained. The synthesized composites (Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S@CDs) were characterized by means of SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and UV-Vis DRS. Transient photocurrent response and Nyquist curve analysis further proved that the carrier separation efficiency of the composite catalyst was significantly improved. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S@CDs for rhodamine B removal from aqueous solution was tested under visible-light irradiation. When the amount of Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S@CDs composite catalyst reached 50 mg, the degradation rate of rhodamine B was 79.35%. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of the Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S@CDs complex was studied. CD doping enhances the adsorption capacity of Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S@CDs composite catalysts due to the increase in surface area, effectively inducing charge delocalization and enhancing the photocatalytic capacity. Zn_0.2Cd_0.8S@CDs composites with low cost and high carrier separation efficiency have broad application prospects in the photocatalytic degradation of dyes.

A novel technique to overcome fluid flow influence in carbon quantum dots/paper-based analytical devices

Paper-based analytical devices are promising choices for rapid tests and lab-on-chip detection techniques. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), on the other hand, are biocompatible nanomaterials, which are industrially promising, due to their fast and cost-effective gram-scale synthesis techniques, as well as their significantly high and stable photoluminescence (PL) properties, which are durable and reliable over a year. However, there have been limitations in the entrapment of CQDs on cellulose papers in a way that their PL is not influenced by the flowing of the CQDs with the stream of analyte fluid, making the sensors less accurate at very low concentrations of liquid analytes. Therefore, in this investigation, a polyvinyl alcohol/alkaline-based method was systematically generated and developed to entrap CQDs inside a 3D crystalline matrix on paper, in a way that they can be used directly as probes for a simple drop-and-detect method. As a proof of concept, N/P-doped CQD on cellulose paper was used to make fluorescent paper-based analytical devices for identifying traces of Hg²⁺ of around 100 ppb. The designed sensor was tested over several months, to study its durability and functionality over long periods, for potential industrial applications.

Synthesis of CoFe2O4/Peanut Shell Powder Composites and the Associated Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction of Phenoxy Carboxylic Acid Herbicides in Water

The magnetic biochar material CoFe₂O₄/PCPS (peanut shell powder) was prepared based on the hybrid calcination method. The properties of prepared composites and the extraction effect of magnetic solid phase extraction on phenoxy carboxylic acid herbicides were assessed. The morphology, crystal structure, specific surface area, and pore size distribution of the material were analysed using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), infrared Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N₂ absorption surface analysis (BET). The results of the magnetic solid phase extraction of a variety of phenoxy carboxylic acid herbicides in water using CoFe₂O₄/PCPS composites showed that, when the mass ratio of CoFe₂O₄ and PCPS was 1:1, 40 mg of the composite was used, and the adsorption time was 10 min at pH 8.50. Methanol was used as the eluent, and the recovery rates of the three phenoxy carboxylic acid herbicides were maintained at 81.95–99.07%. Furthermore, the actual water sample analysis results showed that the established method had good accuracy, stability, and reliability.

A nanosized photothermal responsive core-shell carbonized polymer dots based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) for light-triggered drug release

Core-shell nanocomposites are one of the most important achievements in the fast-growing field of nanotechnology. The combination of multi-responsive nano-shell with luminescent and photothermal core has led to promising applications in various fields such as optics, electronics and medicine. In this work, a nanosized core-shell system composed by carbonized dots core and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) shell was developed and the photothermal triggered release of doxorubicin was demonstrated. The system was fully characterized by H¹-NMR, DLS, Z-potential, AFM, optical absorption and fluorescence measurements. A photothermal conversion efficiency (η) value of about 67.9% and a doxorubicin photo-release rate value of about 1.0% min^-1 were measured. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations data were in agreement with experimental results, at 310 K the coil-to-globule transition and a consequent desorption of doxorubicin from the polymer were observed. Both the radius of gyration and the fluctuation of the distance doxorubicin-PNIPAM pointed that the temperature above the LCST and the acid pH facilitated the polymer transition. Moreover, MD simulations and experimental data suggested an influence on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) exerted by the number of polymer chains anchored to the carbon core.

Carbon Dot/Polymer Composites with Various Precursors and Their Sensing Applications: A Review

Carbon dots (CDs) have generated much interest because of their significant fluorescence (FL) properties, extraordinary photophysical attributes, and long-term colloidal stability. CDs have been regarded as a prospective carbon nanomaterial for various sensing applications because of their low toxicity, strong and broad optical absorption, high chemical stability, rapid transfer properties, and easy modification. To improve their functionality, CD/polymer composites have been developed by integrating polymers into CDs. CD/polymer composites have diversified because of their easy preparation and applications in sensing, optoelectronics, semiconductors, molecular delivery, and various commercial fields. Many review articles are available regarding the preparation and applications of CDs. Some review articles describing the production and multiple applications of the composites are available. However, no such article has focused on the types of precursors, optical properties, coating characteristics, and specific sensing applications of CD/polymer composites. This review aimed to highlight and summarize the current progress of CD/polymer composites in the last five years (2017–2021). First, we overview the precursors used for deriving CDs and CD/polymer composites, synthesis methods for preparing CDs and CD/polymer composites, and the optical properties (absorbance, FL, emission color, and quantum yield) and coating characteristics of the composites. Most carbon and polymer precursors were dominated by synthetic precursors, with citric acid and polyvinyl alcohol widely utilized as carbon and polymer precursors, respectively. Hydrothermal treatment for CDs and interfacial polymerization for CDs/polymers were frequently performed. The optical properties of CDs and CD/polymer composites were almost identical, denoting that the optical characters of CDs were well-maintained in the composites. Then, the chemical, biological, and physical sensing applications of CD/polymer composites are categorized and discussed. The CD/polymer composites showed good performance as chemical, biological, and physical sensors for numerous targets based on FL quenching efficiency. Finally, remaining challenges and future perspectives for CD/polymer composites are provided.

Carbon-based nano-filler in polymeric composites for supercapacitor electrode materials: a review

The concept of this paper was to explore the comparative advantage of polymer composite in the formation of a critical part of electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. These parts largely determine the overall performance of new evolving supercapacitors (SC) as against many other existing storage devices. Polymer materials are reputed for their low weight and life-cycle flexibility which makes supercapacitors unique in their functions. In this paper, application and classification of SCs were undertaken to take into consideration the peculiarities of polymer composite suitable for each class of SCs identified in this work. Part of the rationale of this review paper was to bridge the existing gap identified in many storage devices using salient properties inherent in light-weight materials. This paper also discussed the potential threats to SCs, which require further research works. It is expected that this paper would assist other researchers in evolving SCs devoid of low cell voltages, lower energy density, and reduction of production cost.

Carbon Nanomaterials Embedded in Conductive Polymers: A State of the Art

Carbon nanomaterials are at the forefront of the newest technologies of the third millennium, and together with conductive polymers, represent a vast area of indispensable knowledge for developing the devices of tomorrow. This review focusses on the most recent advances in the field of conductive nanotechnology, which combines the properties of carbon nanomaterials with conjugated polymers. Hybrid materials resulting from the embedding of carbon nanotubes, carbon dots and graphene derivatives are taken into consideration and fully explored, with discussion of the most recent literature. An introduction into the three most widely used conductive polymers and a final section about the most recent biological results obtained using carbon nanotube hybrids will complete this overview of these innovative and beyond belief materials.
