Abstract
Mixed ligand copper(II) complexes [Cu(L1)(bpy)](ClO4)21 and [Cu(L2)(bpy)](ClO4)22 (where L1 = 1-(anthracen-9-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine, L2 = 1-(pyren-1-yl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesised and characterised thoroughly via different analytical and spectroscopic techniques i.e., UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, HRMS and EPR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of the synthesised complexes were obtained using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Both complexes exhibited penta-coordinated and acquired distorted square pyramidal geometry. The redox behaviour of complexes 1 and 2 was investigated by employing cyclic voltammetry. The DNA binding study was carried out by UV-vis spectrophotometry using double-stranded salmon sperm DNA (ds-ss-DNA). The binding constant (Kb) values of 1 and 2 were 0.11 × 104 M-1 and 1.05 × 104 M-1, respectively, which indicates that 2 has better binding ability than 1. This might be due to the higher conjugative abilities with the extended surface area of the aromatic pyrene ring compared to the anthracene moiety. The fluorescence quenching experiments were also performed with EB bound DNA (EB-DNA) and Stern-Volmer constant (KSV) values were calculated as 1.23 × 105 M-1 and 1.39 × 105 M-1 for 1 and 2, respectively, suggesting that 2 showed stronger interaction with ss-DNA than 1. The molecular docking data support the DNA-binding studies, with the sites and mode of interactions against B-DNA varying with 1 and 2. Evaluation of the DNA binding properties of the complexes to linearized plasmid DNA indicated that 2 had modest DNA binding properties, which is a pre-requisite for a genotoxic agent. The effect of 1 and 2 on cell survival was analysed using HeLa cells by MTT assay and it was observed that the IC50 values of 1 and 2 were 43.7 μM and 18.6 μM, respectively. Our study paves the way for the designing of bio-inspired novel mixed metal complexes, which shows promising results for further exploration of molecular and mechanistic studies towards the development of non-platinum based economical metallodrugs.

Abstract
Metal complexes of iminodiacetamide (imda) ligands and metal ions Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) were prepared using eight imda ligands (L1-L8) substituted with groups of different steric and electronic properties on the central amine N atom (H atom, methyl, isopropyl, and benzyl) and the para position of the phenyl rings (nitro and dimethylamino). The effect of these substituents on the stoichiometry (ML and ML2), geometry, and stereochemistry (mer, trans-fac, cis-fac) of the complexes was studied in the solid state, in solution, and by density functional theory calculations. Single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, and IR spectroscopy showed that in the solid state imda ligands preferentially form trans-fac ML2 complexes, with the exception of the cis-fac complex 7Zn. NMR spectroscopy of diamagnetic Zn(II) and paramagnetic Co(II) complexes revealed the formation of both ML and ML2 complexes in solution, which was also confirmed by UV-vis titrations. Variable-temperature NMR was used to study the effect of the substituent on the central amine N atom on the Zn-N bond strength and nitrogen inversion. The relative stabilities of the isomers were rationalized by computations and the optimized structures used for geometry analysis.

Abstract
Metal complexes with ML or ML2 stoichiometry have been isolated in the reaction of Zn(NO3)2, ZnBr2 or M(NO3)2/NaBF4, M = Zn(ii), Co(ii) or Ni(ii), with either amino acid or amine substituted tridentate nitrogen ligands based on bis(2-picolyl)amine (bpa) or bis(2-quinaldyl)amine (bqa). The stoichiometry (M : L = 1 : 1 or 1 : 2) and stereochemistry (mer, trans-fac or cis-fac) of the products have been studied by NMR and IR spectroscopy, X-ray single crystal analysis and quantum-chemical calculations with an implicit SMD solvation model.

Abstract
Molecular photophysics and metal coordination chemistry are the two fundamental pillars that support the development of fluorescent cation indicators. In this article, we describe how Zn(II)-coordination alters various ligand-centered photophysical processes that are pertinent to developing Zn(II) indicators. The main aim is to show how small organic Zn(II) indicators work under the constraints of specific requirements, including Zn(II) detection range, photophysical requirements such as excitation energy and emission color, temporal and spatial resolutions in a heterogeneous intracellular environment, and fluorescence response selectivity between similar cations such as Zn(II) and Cd(II). In the last section, the biological questions that fluorescent Zn(II) indicators help to answer are described, which have been motivating and challenging this field of research.
