Abstract
BACKGROUND The current study uses a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of sexual minority adults in the US to investigate the pathways from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to adulthood suicidal thoughts and behaviors. METHODS ACEs were measured at year one, potential mediators at year two, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (suicidal ideation, intent, plan, and attempt) at year three. We conducted an exploratory mediation analysis to identify potential mediating factors linking ACEs to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Ten candidate mediators were examined: social well-being, felt stigma, experiences of everyday discrimination, social support, psychological distress, alcohol and drug use, importance of sexual identity, community connection, and internalized homophobia. RESULTS Participants were 1518 adults who identified as lesbian or gay (n = 833; 55 %), bisexual (n = 493; 33 %), or with other sexual minority identities (n = 181; 12 %) and were on average 36.48 years (SD = 14.7) of age. Psychological distress served as a common mediator between ACEs and suicidal ideation, intent, plan, and attempt. Additionally, experiences of everyday discrimination emerged as a specific mediator leading to suicidal intent, whereas social support uniquely mediated the relation between ACEs and suicide plan. LIMITATIONS Potential recall bias due to retrospective reporting of ACEs may be a limitation. Future studies should broaden the measurement scope of ACEs and implement intersectional methods. CONCLUSION The current findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions that address the specific mental health needs of sexual minority individuals, particularly focusing on mitigating psychological distress, combating systemic discrimination, and enhancing social support.

Abstract
In multidimensional tests, the identification of latent traits measured by each item is crucial. In addition to item-trait relationship, differential item functioning (DIF) is routinely evaluated to ensure valid comparison among different groups. The two problems are investigated separately in the literature. This paper uses a unified framework for detecting item-trait relationship and DIF in multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) models. By incorporating DIF effects in MIRT models, these problems can be considered as variable selection for latent/observed variables and their interactions. A Bayesian adaptive Lasso procedure is developed for variable selection, in which item-trait relationship and DIF effects can be obtained simultaneously. Simulation studies show the performance of our method for parameter estimation, the recovery of item-trait relationship and the detection of DIF effects. An application is presented using data from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire.

Abstract
Early life events can have long-lasting effects that may impact the quality of life into adulthood. The link between childhood adversities and adult mental and physical health is well documented, however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Executive functions are assumed to be a key factor in successfully dealing with cognitive-emotional challenges thereby contributing to stress resilience and mental health across the lifespan. Here, we examined whether cognitive control moderates the link between early life adversity and depression. Data was available from a sample of 424 participants aged 20-70 years (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT05155397). They performed in the Stroop task and behavior as well as frontal theta power were recorded. Negative childhood experiences were assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), chronic stress was measured with the Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress (TICS) and depression symptoms with Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI). The CTQ predicted symptoms of chronic stress and depression. Regression models pointed to the TICS as a crucial mediator in the relationship between CTQ and BDI. However, parameters of cognitive control demonstrated a rather weak effect as moderators. These results indicate that chronic stress is an important mediator linking childhood trauma to depression but suggest only a limited role for cognitive control.

Abstract
In mediation analysis, the exposure often influences the mediating effect, i.e., there is an interaction between exposure and mediator on the dependent variable. When the mediator is high-dimensional, it is necessary to identify non-zero mediatorsM and exposure-by-mediator ( X -by- M ) interactions. Although several high-dimensional mediation methods can naturally handle X -by- M interactions, research is scarce in preserving the underlying hierarchical structure between the main effects and the interactions. To fill the knowledge gap, we develop the XMInt procedure to select M and X -by- M interactions in the high-dimensional mediators setting while preserving the hierarchical structure. Our proposed method employs a sequential regularization-based forward-selection approach to identify the mediators and their hierarchically preserved interaction with exposure. Our numerical experiments showed promising selection results. Further, we applied our method to ADNI morphological data and examined the role of cortical thickness and subcortical volumes on the effect of amyloid-beta accumulation on cognitive performance, which could be helpful in understanding the brain compensation mechanism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has seen an explosion in popularity in recent years; however, an improved understanding of how to minimise (selective) non-adherence is needed. METHODS We examined a range of respondent characteristics predictors of adherence (defined as the number of EMA surveys completed) in the D2M EMA study. Participants were a sample of n = 255 individuals drawn from the longitudinal z-proso cohort who completed up to 4 EMA surveys per day for a period of 2 weeks. RESULTS In unadjusted analyses, lower moral shame, lower self-control, lower levels of self-injury, and higher levels of aggression, tobacco use, psychopathy, and delinquency were associated with lower adherence. In fully adjusted analyses with predictors selected using lasso, only alcohol use was related to adherence: beer and alcopops to higher adherence and spirits to lower adherence. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide potential insights into some of the psychological mechanisms that may underlie adherence in EMA. They also point to respondent characteristics for which additional or tailored efforts may be needed to promote adherence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cuproptosis is the latest novel form of cell death. However, the relationship between asthma and cuproptosis is not fully understood. METHODS In this study, we screened differentially expressed cuproptosis-related genes from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and performed immune infiltration analysis. Subsequently, patients with asthma were typed and analyzed by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was performed to calculate the module-trait correlations, and the hub genes of the intersection were taken to construct machine learning (XGB, SVM, RF, GLM). Finally, we used TGF-β to establish a BEAS-2B asthma model to observe the expression levels of hub genes. RESULTS Six cuproptosis-related genes were obtained. Immune-infiltration analysis shows that cuproptosis-related genes are associated with a variety of biological functions. We classified asthma patients into two subtypes based on the expression of cuproptosis-related genes and found significant Gene Ontology (GO) and immune function differences between the different subtypes. WGCNA selected 2 significant modules associated with disease features and typing. Finally, we identified TRIM25, DYSF, NCF4, ABTB1, CXCR1 as asthma biomarkers by taking the intersection of the hub genes of the 2 modules and constructing a 5-genes signature, which nomograph, decision curve analysis (DCA) and calibration curves, receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) showed high efficiency in diagnosing the probability of survival of asthma patients. Finally, in vitro experiments have shown that DYSF and CXCR1 expression is up expressed in asthma. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides further directions for studying the molecular mechanism of asthma.

Abstract
Intelligence is highly heritable. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shown that thousands of alleles contribute to variation in intelligence with small effect sizes. Polygenic scores (PGS), which combine these effects into one genetic summary measure, are increasingly used to investigate polygenic effects in independent samples. Whereas PGS explain a considerable amount of variance in intelligence, it is largely unknown how brain structure and function mediate this relationship. Here, we show that individuals with higher PGS for educational attainment and intelligence had higher scores on cognitive tests, larger surface area, and more efficient fiber connectivity derived by graph theory. Fiber network efficiency as well as the surface of brain areas partly located in parieto-frontal regions were found to mediate the relationship between PGS and cognitive performance. These findings are a crucial step forward in decoding the neurogenetic underpinnings of intelligence, as they identify specific regional networks that link polygenic predisposition to intelligence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicidal ideation is highly prevalent in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). However, the factors determining who will transition from ideation to attempt are not established. Emerging research points to suicide capability (SC), which reflects fearlessness of death and increased pain tolerance, as a construct mediating this transition. This Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression study (CANBIND-5) aimed to identify the neural basis of SC and its interaction with pain as a marker of suicide attempt. METHODS MDD patients (n = 20) with suicide risk and healthy controls (n = 21) completed a self-report SC scale and a cold pressor task measuring pain threshold, tolerance, endurance, and intensity at threshold and tolerance. All participants underwent a resting-state brain scan and functional connectivity was examined for 4 regions: anterior insula (aIC), posterior insula (pIC), anterior mid-cingulate cortex (aMCC) and subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC). RESULTS In MDD, SC correlated positively with pain endurance and negatively with threshold intensity. Furthermore, SC correlated with the connectivity of aIC to the supramarginal gyrus, pIC to the paracingulate gyrus, aMCC to the paracingulate gyrus, and sgACC to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. These correlations were stronger in MDD compared to controls. Only threshold intensity mediated the correlation between SC and connectivity strength. LIMITATIONS Resting-state scans provided an indirect assessment of SC and the pain network. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight point to a neural network underlying SC that is associated with pain processing. This supports the potential clinical utility of pain response measurement as a method to investigate markers of suicide risk.

Cerebral blood flow and cardiovascular risk effects on resting brain regional homogeneity. Neuroimage 2022; 262:119555. Abstract
Regional homogeneity (ReHo) is a measure of local functional brain connectivity that has been reported to be altered in a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders. Computed from brain resting-state functional MRI time series, ReHo is also sensitive to fluctuations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) that in turn may be influenced by cerebrovascular health. We accessed cerebrovascular health with Framingham cardiovascular risk score (FCVRS). We hypothesize that ReHo signal may be influenced by regional CBF; and that these associations can be summarized as FCVRS→CBF→ReHo. We used three independent samples to test this hypothesis. A test-retest sample of N = 30 healthy volunteers was used for test-retest evaluation of CBF effects on ReHo. Amish Connectome Project (ACP) sample (N = 204, healthy individuals) was used to evaluate association between FCVRS and ReHo and testing if the association diminishes given CBF. The UKBB sample (N = 6,285, healthy participants) was used to replicate the effects of FCVRS on ReHo. We observed strong CBF→ReHo links (p<2.5 × 10-3) using a three-point longitudinal sample. In ACP sample, marginal and partial correlations analyses demonstrated that both CBF and FCVRS were significantly correlated with the whole-brain average (p<10-6) and regional ReHo values, with the strongest correlations observed in frontal, parietal, and temporal areas. Yet, the association between ReHo and FCVRS became insignificant once the effect of CBF was accounted for. In contrast, CBF→ReHo remained significantly linked after adjusting for FCVRS and demographic covariates (p<10-6). Analysis in N = 6,285 replicated the FCVRS→ReHo effect (p = 2.7 × 10-27). In summary, ReHo alterations in health and neuropsychiatric illnesses may be partially driven by region-specific variability in CBF, which is, in turn, influenced by cardiovascular factors.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are on the rise and greatly impact the quality of individuals’ lives. Although accumulating evidence indicates a relationship between OA and PD, the particular interactions connecting the two diseases have not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, this study explored the association through genetic characterization and functional enrichment. Four datasets (GSE55235, GSE12021, GSE7621, and GSE42966) were chosen for assessment and validation from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) was implemented to determine the most relevant genes for clinical features. Then, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) were carried out to explore the biological processes of common genes, and to display the interrelationships between common genes, the STRING database and the application Molecular Complex Detection Algorithm (MCODE) of Cytoscape software were leveraged to get hub genes. By intersecting the common genes with the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) acquired from GSE12021 and GSE42966, the hub genes were identified. Finally, we validated the diagnostic efficacy of hub genes and explored their correlation with 22 immune infiltrating cells. As a consequence, we discovered 71 common genes, most of which were functionally enriched in antigen processing and presentation, mitochondrial translation, the mRNA surveillance pathway, and nucleocytoplasmic transport. Furthermore, WDR43 was found by intersecting eight hub genes with 28 DEGs from the two validation datasets. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) implied the diagnostic role of WDR43 in OA and PD. Immune infiltration research revealed that T-cell regulatory (Tregs), monocytes, and mast cells resting were associated with the pathogenesis of OA and PD. WDR43 may provide key insights into the relationship between OA and PD.

Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for a large proportion of lung cancer cases, with few diagnostic and therapeutic targets currently available for NSCLC. This study aimed to identify specific biomarkers for NSCLC. We obtained three gene-expression profiles from the Gene Expression Omnibus database (GSE18842, GSE21933, and GSE32863) and screened for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between NSCLC and normal lung tissue. Enrichment analyses were performed using Gene Ontology, Disease Ontology, and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes. Machine learning methods were used to identify the optimal diagnostic biomarkers for NSCLC using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression, and support vector machine recursive feature elimination. CIBERSORT was used to assess immune cell infiltration in NSCLC and the correlation between biomarkers and immune cells. Finally, using western blot, small interfering RNA, Cholecystokinin-8, and transwell assays, the biological functions of biomarkers with high predictive value were validated. A total of 371 DEGs (165 up-regulated genes and 206 down-regulated genes) were identified, and enrichment analysis revealed that these DEGs might be linked to the development and progression of NSCLC. ABCA8, ADAMTS8, ASPA, CEP55, FHL1, PYCR1, RAMP3, and TPX2 genes were identified as novel diagnostic biomarkers for NSCLC. Monocytes were the most visible activated immune cells in NSCLC. The knockdown of the TPX2 gene, a biomarker with a high predictive value, inhibited A549 cell proliferation and migration. This study identified eight potential diagnostic biomarkers for NSCLC. Further, the TPX2 gene may be a therapeutic target for NSCLC.

Abstract
Mediation analysis in high-dimensional settings often involves identifying potential mediators among a large number of measured variables. For this purpose, a two-step familywise error rate procedure called ScreenMin has been recently proposed. In ScreenMin, variables are first screened and only those that pass the screening are tested. The proposed data-independent threshold for selection has been shown to guarantee asymptotic familywise error rate. In this work, we investigate the impact of the threshold on the finite-sample familywise error rate. We derive a power maximizing threshold and show that it is well approximated by an adaptive threshold of Wang et al. (2016, arXiv preprint arXiv:1610.03330). We illustrate the investigated procedures on a case-control study examining the effect of fish intake on the risk of colorectal adenoma. We also apply our procedure in the context of replicability analysis to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) associated with crop yield in two distinct environments.

Abstract
Purpose Although considerable progress has been made in basic and clinical research on nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the biomarkers of the progression of NPC have not been fully studied and described. This study was designed to identify potential novel biomarkers for NPC using integrated analyses and explore the immune cell infiltration in this pathological process. Methods Five GEO data sets were downloaded from gene expression omnibus database (GEO) and analysed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs), followed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses. The four algorithms were adopted for screening of novel and key biomarkers for NPC, including random forest (RF) machine learning algorithm, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression, support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE), and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Lastly, CIBERSORT was used to assess the infiltration of immune cells in NPC, and the correlation between diagnostic markers and infiltrating immune cells was analyzed. Results Herein, we identified 46 DEGs, and enrichment analysis results showed that DEGs and several kinds of signaling pathways might be closely associated with the occurrence and progression of NPC. DTL was recognized as NPC-related biomarker. DTL, also known as retinoic acid-regulated nuclear matrix-associated protein (RAMP), or DNA replication factor 2 (CDT2), is reported to be correlated with the cell proliferation, cell cycle arrest and cell invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer and gastric cancer. Immune infiltration analysis demonstrated that macrophages M0, macrophages M1 and T cells CD4 memory activated were linked to pathogenesis of NPC. Conclusion In summary, we adopted a comprehensive strategy to screen DTL as biomarkers related to NPC and explore the critical role of immune cell infiltration in NPC.

Abstract
DNA methylation (DNAm) has been suggested to play a critical role in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), through mediating the relationship between trauma and PTSD. However, this underlying mechanism of PTSD for African Americans still remains unknown. To fill this gap, in this article, we investigate how DNAm mediates the effects of traumatic experiences on PTSD symptoms in the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study (DNHS) (2008-2013) which involves primarily African Americans adults. To achieve this, we develop a new mediation analysis approach for high-dimensional potential DNAm mediators. A key novelty of our method is that we consider heterogeneity in mediation effects across subpopulations. Specifically, mediators in different subpopulations could have opposite effects on the outcome, and thus could be difficult to identify under a traditional homogeneous model framework. In contrast, the proposed method can estimate heterogeneous mediation effects and identifies subpopulations in which individuals share similar effects. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing methods for both homogeneous and heterogeneous data. We also present our mediation analysis results of a dataset with 125 participants and more than 450,000 CpG sites from the DNHS study. The proposed method finds three subgroups of subjects and identifies DNAm mediators corresponding to genes such as HSP90AA1 and NFATC1 which have been linked to PTSD symptoms in literature. Our finding could be useful in future finer-grained investigation of PTSD mechanism and in the development of new treatments for PTSD.

Abstract
Statistical methods to integrate multiple layers of data, from exposures to intermediate traits to outcome variables, are needed to guide interpretation of complex data sets for which variables are likely contributing in a causal pathway from exposure to outcome. Statistical mediation analysis based on structural equation models provide a general modeling framework, yet they can be difficult to apply to high-dimensional data and they are not automated to select the best fitting model. To overcome these limitations, we developed novel algorithms and software to simultaneously evaluate multiple exposure variables, multiple intermediate traits, and multiple outcome variables. Our penalized mediation models are computationally efficient and simulations demonstrate that they produce reliable results for large data sets. Application of our methods to a study of vascular disease demonstrates their utility to identify novel direct effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on coronary heart disease and peripheral artery disease, while disentangling the effects of SNPs on the intermediate risk factors including lipids, cigarette smoking, systolic blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Sparse estimation through regularization is gaining popularity in psychological research. Such techniques penalize the complexity of the model and could perform variable/path selection in an automatic way, and thus are particularly useful in models that have small parameter-to-sample-size ratios. This paper gives a detailed tutorial of the R package regsem, which implements regularization for structural equation models. Example R code is also provided to highlight the key arguments of implementing regularized structural equation models in this package. The tutorial ends by discussing remedies of some known drawbacks of a popular type of regularization, computational methods supported by the package that can improve the selection result, and some other practical issues such as dealing with missing data and categorical variables.

Abstract
This study aims to explore biomarkers associated with vitiligo and analyze the pathological role of immune cell infiltration in the disease. We used the robust rank aggregation (RRA) method to integrate three vitiligo data sets downloaded from gene expression omnibus database, identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and analyze the functional correlation. Then, the comprehensive strategy of combined weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) and logical regression of the selection operator (LASSO), support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE), and random forest (RF) machine learning algorithm are employed to screen and biomarkers associated with vitiligo. Finally, the immune cell infiltration of vitiligo was evaluated by CIBERSORT, and the correlation between biomarkers and infiltrating immune cells was analyzed. Herein, we identified 131 robust DEGs, and enrichment analysis results showed that robust DEGs and melanogenesis were closely associated with vitiligo development and progression. TYR, TYRP1, DCT and LARP7 were identified as vitiligo-related biomarkers. Immune infiltration analysis demonstrated that CD4 T Cell, CD8 T Cell, Tregs, NK cells, dendritic cells, and macrophages were involved in vitiligo’s pathogenesis. In summary, we adopted a comprehensive strategy to screen biomarkers related to vitiligo and explore the critical role of immune cell infiltration in vitiligo. Abstract
Mediation analysis attempts to determine whether the relationship between an independent variable (e.g., exposure) and an outcome variable can be explained, at least partially, by an intermediate variable, called a mediator. Most methods for mediation analysis focus on one mediator at a time, although multiple mediators can be jointly analyzed by structural equation models (SEMs) that account for correlations among the mediators. We extend the use of SEMs for the analysis of multiple mediators by creating a sparse group lasso penalized model such that the penalty considers the natural groupings of parameters that determine mediation, as well as encourages sparseness of the model parameters. This provides a way to simultaneously evaluate many mediators and select those that have the most impact, a feature of modern penalized models. Simulations are used to illustrate the benefits and limitations of our approach, and application to a study of DNA methylation and reactive cortisol stress following childhood trauma discovered two novel methylation loci that mediate the association of childhood trauma scores with reactive cortisol stress levels. Our new methods are incorporated into R software called regmed.

Abstract
Exploratory mediation analysis via regularization, or XMed, is a recently developed technique that allows one to identify potential mediators of a process of interest. However, as currently implemented, it can only be applied to continuous outcomes. We extend this method to allow application to dichotomous outcomes, including both mediators and dependent variables. Simulation results show that XMed can achieve the same sensitivity as more conventional methods for mediation analysis such as the Sobel test, percentile bootstrap, and bias-corrected bootstrap, but in general requires only half the sample size to do so. We demonstrate the implementation of this approach using an illustrative example examining the relationship between youth behavioral/emotional problems and alcohol use.

Abstract
Methodological innovations have allowed researchers to consider increasingly sophisticated statistical models that are better in line with the complexities of real world behavioral data. However, despite these powerful new analytic approaches, sample sizes may not always be sufficiently large to deal with the increase in model complexity. This poses a difficult modeling scenario that entails large models with a comparably limited number of observations given the number of parameters. We here describe a particular strategy to overcoming this challenge, called regularization. Regularization, a method to penalize model complexity during estimation, has proven a viable option for estimating parameters in this small n, large p setting, but has so far mostly been used in linear regression models. Here we show how to integrate regularization within structural equation models, a popular analytic approach in psychology. We first describe the rationale behind regularization in regression contexts, and how it can be extended to regularized structural equation modeling (Jacobucci, Grimm, & McArdle, 2016). Our approach is evaluated through the use of a simulation study, showing that regularized SEM outperforms traditional SEM estimation methods in situations with a large number of predictors and small sample size. We illustrate the power of this approach in two empirical examples: modeling the neural determinants of visual short term memory, as well as identifying demographic correlates of stress, anxiety and depression. We illustrate the performance of the method and discuss practical aspects of modeling empirical data, and provide a step-by-step online tutorial.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Suicide is a major public health concern. One consistently cited risk factor for suicide is childhood maltreatment, which also may play a role in the transition from suicidal ideation to suicidal behavior. METHOD The current study aimed to examine the relationship between childhood maltreatment and suicide attempts during adolescence (N = 4834; 52.1% female; 67.5% Caucasian). Data from the U.S. National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were utilized. Forty-six theoretically-relevant risk factors were explored as potential mediators of this relationship using an exploratory mediation data analytic method. RESULTS Results demonstrated a significant childhood maltreatment - suicide attempt relationship only among females. After considering demographics and suicidal ideation, having received counseling in the previous 12 months was the most influential mediator, followed by having a friend attempt suicide in the previous 12 months. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight potential gender differences in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and later suicide attempts, and, moreover, the importance of assessing for recent exposure to peer suicidal behavior in suicide risk assessments.

Abstract
Although a significant body of research has investigated the relationships among children’s emotion understanding (EU), theory of mind (ToM), and language abilities. As far as we know, no study to date has been conducted with a sizeable sample of both preschool and school-age children exploring the direct effect of EU on ToM when the role of language was evaluated as a potential exogenous factor in a single comprehensive model. Participants in the current study were 389 children (age range: 37–97 months, M = 60.79 months; SD = 12.66), to whom a False-Belief understanding battery, the Test of Emotion Comprehension, and the Peabody Test were administered. Children’s EU, ToM, and language ability (receptive vocabulary) were positively correlated. Furthermore, EU scores explained variability in ToM scores independently of participants’ age and gender. Finally, language was found to play a crucial role in both explaining variance in ToM scores and in mediating the relationship between EU and ToM. We discuss the theoretical and educational implications of these outcomes, particularly in relation to offering social and emotional learning programs through schools.

Abstract
Research in regularization, as applied to structural equation modeling (SEM), remains in its infancy. Specifically, very little work has compared regularization approaches across both frequentist and Bayesian estimation. The purpose of this study was to address just that, demonstrating both similarity and distinction across estimation frameworks, while specifically highlighting more recent developments in Bayesian regularization. This is accomplished through the use of two empirical examples that demonstrate both ridge and lasso approaches across both frequentist and Bayesian estimation, along with detail regarding software implementation. We conclude with a discussion of future research, advocating for increased evaluation and synthesis across both Bayesian and frequentist frameworks.
