Abstract
This experiment was conducted to study the effect of mineral supplementation on seminal plasma minerals level, biochemical constituents and total antioxidant capacity of Osmanabadi bucks. The study comprised of forty healthy bucks, aged five months were randomly assigned to ten groups (n = 4 per group). The control group was fed with a basal diet without any additional mineral supplementation. In addition to basal diet, treatment bucks were supplemented with three graded doses of organic Zinc (Zn) as 20, 40 and 60 mg/kg dry matter (DM); organic Copper (Cu) as 12.5, 25, 37.5 mg/ kg DM and combination of Zn + Cu as Zn20+Cu12.5, Zn40+Cu25, Zn60+Cu37.5 mg /kg DM basis respectively. Minerals were supplemented for 8 months and the separated seminal plasma used for analysis of minerals, biochemical profile, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), lipid peroxidation (LPO), and protein carbonylation (PC). In treatment groups, significantly lower LPO and PC were observed, except Zn60 and Zn60+Cu37.5, where higher malondialdehyde (MDA) (P < 0.05) formed. The TAC was relatively higher (P < 0.05) in Zn20, Zn40, Cu12.5 and Zn60+Cu37.5 than control. The minerals and biochemical parameters were significantly altered and positive relationship was observed among them. From this study, it was concluded that supplemented minerals changed the seminal plasma minerals profile (Zn- 7-13; Cu- 0.5-1.9 mg/L), reduced the stress (LPO and PC of control Vs treatment as 0.3 Vs 0.1 nmol/ml and 25.7 Vs 4.3 nmol protein carbonyl/mg protein), which improved the sperm quality in Zn40, all Cu treatments and Zn60+Cu37.5 groups respectively.

Abstract
The protective role of astaxanthin nanoparticles (Ast NPs, 25 mg/kg p.o) against cadmium (Cd, 1 mg/100 g b.w. SC), a known inductor of lipid peroxidation and changes in the antioxidant defense system in the Ross 308 breeder roosters sperm, was examined. Sperm motility (computer-assisted sperm motility analysis), membrane integrity (hypoosmotic swelling test), viability, total abnormality, and enzymatic parameters were assessed after thawing. The testis/body weight (mg/kg) ratio and HE staining results of testis were also performed. The obtained results showed that Cd induced detrimental effects on testis and sperm, while Cd treated by Ast NPs (Cd Ast) diminished this change compared to the Cd group. Cd-treated group resulted in significantly (P < 0.05) lowest total (37.29 ± 2.46) and progressive (5.84 ± 0.47) motility and decreased antioxidant enzyme activity (CAT, TAC, and GPx), as well as producing a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in testis weight (mg) compared to the control group. Treatment with Ast NPs (Ast NPs + Cd) had reversed Cd-induced changes in the antioxidant defense system and significantly prevented Cd-induced testis damage. In conclusion, the results of our work suggest that Ast NPs at 25 mg/kg act as a potent antioxidant in protecting rooster testes against oxidative stress induced by Cd.

Abstract
In this study, semen seminal plasma contents and the motility of sperm cells were determined in Capoeta trutta via a computer-assisted sperm analysis system. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between semen seminal plasma ions and the velocities of sperm cells. Although the predominant ions were K ( 206.84 ± 20.61 mg L- 1 ) and Na ( 128.06 ± 23.82 mg L- 1 ) in the semen seminal plasma, Ca ( 14.05 ± 4.13 mg L- 1 ) and Mg ( 3.35 ± 0.44 mg L- 1 ) were not predominate according to our results. However, partially strong relationships between the curvilinear velocity value (VCL) and K (R 2 = 0.67 ; p < 0.05 ) were found, while it was moderate with Mg (R 2 = 0.48 ; p < 0.05 ). There was a weak relationship with Na (R 2 = 0.17 ; p < 0.05 ) and Ca (R 2 = 0.34 ; p < 0.05 ). In our results, while the trace metals were determined as Zn > Al > B > Li > Cu in semen seminal plasma, they are not correlated with sperm cell velocities. Finally, we hope that the present information on the motility parameters of Capoeta trutta in this paper will eventually help artificial insemination in reproduction practices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine whether the dysfunction of physiological apoptosis and specific seminal biochemical parameters could be associated with male infertility and sperm morphological defects. STUDY DESIGN Ejaculated sperm samples from sixty patients with isolated teratozoospermia and thirty fertile donors were analyzed. The proportion of both viable and dead spermatozoa expressing activated caspases was detected by fluorescence microscopy through the use of different specific carboxyfluorescein-labeled caspase inhibitors FLICA. The different stages of apoptosis in human were qualitatively and quantitatively determined by using the AO/EB fluorescent staining method. The levels of the seminal biochemical parameters (acetylcholinesterase (AChE), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine phosphokinase (CK), iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P)) were evaluated spectrophotometrically. RESULTS Patients with teratozoospermia showed significantly higher proportions of dead and live spermatozoa with activated caspases and spermatozoa in the late stage of apoptosis when compared to controls. Among the different studied biochemical seminal parameters, the rates of acetylcholinesterase activity, creatine phosphokinase, iron, and calcium were significantly increased in the patient group. However, the rate of phosphorus was significantly decreased. Interestingly, significant relationships were found between the studied biochemical and apoptotic biomarkers and the rates of atypical sperm forms with the incidences of head, mid-piece, and tail abnormalities. Furthermore, positive correlations were found between P, AChE, Fe, CK, and LDH with apoptotic markers. CONCLUSIONS These results emphasize the impact of apoptosis in the pathophysiology of teratozoospermia and suggest that seminal biochemical disturbance may arise such damage.

Abstract
We analysed sodium (Na), copper (Cu) and selenium (Se) levels in human semen and glutathione peroxidase activity (GPx) in seminal plasma and examined their relationships with sperm quality. Semen samples were obtained from men (n=168) undergoing routine infertility evaluation. The study design included two groups based on standard ejaculate parameters: Group I (n=39) with normal ejaculates (normozoospermia) and Group II (n=129) with a pathological spermiogram. Se concentration (but not Na or Cu) and GPx activity were significantly higher in normozoospermic males than in those with a pathological spermiogram and also in males with correct sperm motility and normal sperm morphology than in asthenozoospermic and teratozoospermic males. There were significant correlations between sperm motility, Se and GPx, between rapid progressive motility and Cu, between sperm motility and Na, between normal sperm morphology and Se and Cu and between sperm concentration and Cu and GPx. Significant correlations were found between Na and Cu, between Na and Se and between Cu and Se in human semen in relation to alcohol consumption and tobacco use. Na, Cu, Se and GPx are related to sperm characteristics and male fertility and their survey could improve male infertility diagnosis.

Abstract
Mutual relationships between selected chemical elements (Na, K, Fe, Cu, Mg, and Zn), basic motility characteristics (motility and progressive motility), and markers of the oxidative balance (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, albumin, and malondialdehyde) were investigated in bovine seminal plasma and spermatozoa. Computer assisted sperm analysis was used to assess the motility parameters; mineral concentrations were determined by the voltammetric method and flame absorption spectrophotometry; antioxidants and malondialdehyde were evaluated by UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Concentrations of chemical elements in both seminal fractions were in the following descending order: Na > K > Zn > Mg > Fe > Cu. Higher amounts of all minerals and nonenzymatic antioxidants were detected in the seminal plasma (P < 0.01; P < 0.001), while higher MDA concentration and activity of enzymatic antioxidants were recorded in the cell lysates (P < 0.01; P < 0.001). Na, Fe, Cu, Mg, and Zn were positively correlated with the motility and antioxidant parameters (P < 0.05; P < 0.01; P < 0.001). Inversely, K exhibited the positive associations with malondialdehyde (P < 0.05). This study demonstrates that most chemical elements are integral components of bovine semen and are needed for the protection against oxidative stress development.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) content on basic motility characteristics (motility-MOT, progressive motility-PROG) as well as selected markers of the prooxidant-antioxidant balance (catalase-CAT, glutathione-GSH, malondialdehyde-MDA) in bovine seminal plasma and spermatozoa. Twenty five semen samples were collected from breeding bulls and used in the study. Motility analysis was carried out using the Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) system. The samples were centrifuged, fractions of seminal plasma and spermatozoa were separated, lysates were prepared from the sperm cell fractions. Pb and Cd concentrations were determined by the voltametric method (ASV), antioxidants and MDA were analyzed by UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The analysis showed that the average concentration of Pb in the seminal plasma was 0.23 ± 0.02 μg/mL, while its amount in the sperm cells was significantly higher (0.41 ± 0.07 μg/mL; P < 0.05). The average Cd content in bovine seminal fractions was similar and non-significant: 0.09 ± 0.01 μg/mL in the seminal plasma and 0.11 ± 0.01 μg/mL in spermatozoa (P > 0.05). The correlation analysis revealed that both heavy metals were significantly negatively correlated with MOT and PROG (P < 0.05; P < 0.01; P < 0.001), CAT (P < 0.05; P < 0.01) as well as GSH (P < 0.05; P < 0.01) but significantly positively associated with MDA as the marker of lipid peroxidation (P < 0.05; P < 0.01). Moreover the samples were categorized in three quality groups (Excellent, Good, Moderate) according to their motility values. The lowest Pb, Cd and MDA concentrations but the best antioxidant characteristics were found in samples of the best quality, moderate quality samples exhibited the highest Pb, Cd and MDA content together with the worst antioxidant capacity. This study demonstrates that Pb and Cd are serious toxic elements, which are able to increase the risk of seminal oxidative stress development and a subsequent decrease of male fertility.

Abstract
Experiments with turkeys were conducted to determine the effects of long-term ingestion of Cd (2.0 mg Cd/day/turkey) on its accumulation in the tissues and organs. The cadmium was found especially in the muscles, livers and kidneys. The highest average content of cadmium was found in the kidneys (1.09 mg/kg). The contents of Cd in the kidneys and livers were 19 times and 14 times (respectively) higher compared to the muscles. The administration of Zn (72 mg / day / turkey) along with high doses of Cd, significantly (P < 0.001) reduced the concentrations of Cd in the organs of the experimental animals. The average concentrations of cadmium in the kidneys and livers of turkeys from the CdZn group were 43 % and 48 % (respectively) lower than the average concentrations in the same organs in the turkeys from the group which received only Cd.

Abstract
In this in vitro study the effects of mercuric chloride on the motility and structural integrity of rabbit spermatozoa were investigated. The spermatozoa motility was evaluated using CASA method and Annexin analysis was used for detection of structural changes. The concentration of mercury in the medium varied from 5.0 to 83.3 microg HgCl(2)/mL. At Time 0 the highest motility was detected in the control group (67.09 +/- 8.72%). Motility in groups with mercury administration was lower in comparison with control. Significant differences were detected in groups with 50.0-83.3 microg HgCl(2)/mL (P < 0.001) at Time 0. After 60 and 120 minutes of incubation with mercuric chloride the motility significantly decreased almost in all experimental groups. Progressive motility had a decreasing trend in all experimental groups. At time 60 and 120 significant differences were noted in the group receiving 6.25-83.3 microg HgCl(2)/mL. Significant differences were detected in all experimental groups, except the group with the lowest mercuric chloride administration. The concentration-dependent decrease of spermatozoa progressive motility up to 50% of control was detected for groups receiving 50.0 - 83.3 microg HgCl(2)/mL at Time 0, for groups receiving 12.5-83.3 microg HgCl(2)/mL at Time 60 and 120, decreasing from 36.46 +/- 18.73% to 1.03 +/- 2.50%. Detailed evaluation of spermatozoa distance (DAP, DCL, and DSL) and velocity (VAP, VCL, and VSL) parameters as well as straightness (STR), linearity (LIN), wobble (WOB), amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) and beat cross frequency (BCF) of spermatozoa revealed decrease in groups with the highest mercury concentration in comparison with the control group at all time periods. Detection of spermatozoa with disordered membrane was carried out for groups with higher mercury concentrations and control, using Annexin analysis. Analysis showed higher occurrence of positive spermatozoa in the mercury exposed groups. Some Annexin positive reactions from all spermatozoa were detected in the control group. In mercury-exposed groups positive reaction proved alteration in anterial part of head (acrosome), connection part (connection piece) and in mitochondrial segment. Detected data evidently confirm adverse effects of high mercuric chloride concentrations in rabbit semen on spermatozoa motility parameters.

Abstract
In this study the concentrations of trace elements such as lead, cadmium, iron, nickel, copper and zinc in the human semen (n = 47), occurrence of pathological spermatozoa, and correlations of these elements to pathological forms were investigated. For each sample of human spermatozoa at least 500 spermatozoa were evaluated. Metal contents were determined by the voltametric method and flame absorption spectrophotometry method. The concentrations of trace elements in human semen were: lead 1.49 +/- 0.40 mg x kg(- 1), cadmium 0.13 +/- 0.15 mg x kg(- 1), iron 2.59 +/- 0.21 mg x kg(- 1), nickel 0.40 +/- 0.07 mg x kg(- 1), copper 0.28 +/- 0.06 mg x kg(- 1), and zinc 153.93 +/- 67.08 mg x kg(- 1), respectively. The total percentage of pathological spermatozoa was 41.61 +/- 9.80% with predominancy of broken flagellum, flagellum torso and separated flagellum. In relation to trace elements the analysis showed correlation between copper and lead (r = -0.47), nickel and iron (r = 0.36), lead and flagellum ball (r = -0.39), cadmium and large heads (r = 0.37) and between iron and other forms of pathological spermatozoa (r = -0.32). Results of this study describe possible effects of trace elements on the spermatozoa quality in normal human sperm.
