Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in clams and sediments from an impacted estuary by the oil industry in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico: concentrations and bioaccumulation factors

Quantitative determination of heavy metal contaminants in edible soft tissue of clams, mussels, and oysters

Aquatic environments are important sources of healthy and nutritious foods; however, clams, mussels, and oysters (the bivalves most consumed by humans) can pose considerable health risks to consumers if contaminated by heavy metals in polluted areas. These organisms can accumulate dangerously high concentrations of heavy metals (e.g., Cd, Hg, Pb) in their soft tissues that can then be transferred to humans following ingestion. Monitoring contaminants in clams, mussels and oysters and their environments is critically important for global human health and food security, which requires reliable measurement of heavy-metal concentrations in the soft tissues. The aim of our present paper is to provide a review of how heavy metals are quantified in clams, mussels, and oysters. We do this by evaluating sample-preparation methods (i.e., tissue digestion / extraction and analyte preconcentration) and instrumental techniques (i.e., atomic, fluorescence and mass spectrometric methods, chromatography, neutron activation analysis and electrochemical sensors) that have been applied for this purpose to date. Application of these methods, their advantages, limitations, challenges and expected future directions are discussed.

Trace Metals in Two Geoduck Clams (Panopea generosa and P. Globosa) Exploited for the Regional Market from Two Areas of Northwest Mexico

Biological and fishery features of Panopea sp. clams have been studied in northwest Mexico because of their importance for human consumption. However, the content of pollutants in their tissues, along with their implications have not been addressed yet. The concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) in soft tissues of Panopea generosa and P. globosa clams were examined in this region by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The metal concentrations (µg/g wet weight) ranged from 6.5 to 14.2, 0.97-8.09, 0.60-1.18, and 0.01-0.07, for Zn, Cu, Cd, and Hg, respectively. This study proposes that metal presence is related to weathering, upwelling, and drainage from adjacent agricultural lands to the coast. According to the Official Mexican Standard (NOM-242-SSA1-2009) and the World Health Organization (WHO, 2022), the metal content in siphon tissue indicates safe levels for human consumption.

Evaluation of trace metal levels in surface water and sediments of the Hungarian upper section of the Danube River and its tributaries

The objective of this study was to assess the concentration levels of trace metals (Zn, Hg, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb and Cu) in surface water and bottom sediments of the Hungarian upper section of the Danube River and its main tributaries. A total of 935 samples (water and sediments) were collected from 10 different sampling sites in the period of 2001-2012 and analyzed for the trace metals. Moreover, the dissolved arsenic content was determined in a number of 467 water samples in the period of 2004-2012. The highest dissolved trace element concentrations were observed at the site of Kenyérmezei-patak Creek located near a hazardous waste incinerator. However, the comparison of the dissolved trace metal(loid) concentrations determined with other sections of the Danube River and the European Union environmental quality standards revealed that the dissolved trace metal(loid) concentrations were relatively low in the Hungarian upper section during the 12-year study period (excluding some samples for Hg, Cd and Cr). The concentrations of trace metals in sediments were higher than those found in water samples and varied very much in all sampling sites during the study period. The sediment samples were mainly classified as low or moderate polluted for trace metals. However, some sediment samples collected especially from the Moson Danube branch indicated a considerable (for Zn, Hg, Cd, Ni and Cu) or a very high (for Zn and Hg) contamination.

Metal pollution in a contaminated bay: relationship between metal geochemical fractionation in sediments and accumulation in a polychaete

Jinzhou Bay in Northern China has been seriously contaminated with metals due to the impacts of smelting activities. In this study, we investigated the relationship between metal accumulation in a deposit-feeding polychaete Neanthes japonica and metal concentration and geochemical fractionation (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Ni) in sediments of Jinzhou Bay. Compared with the historical data, metals in the more mobile geochemical fraction (exchangeable and carbonate fractions) were gradually partitioned into the more stable fraction (Fe-Mn oxides) over time. Metal concentration and geochemical fractionation in sediment significantly affected metal bioavailability and accumulation in polychaetes, except for Ni. Metal accumulation in polychaetes was significantly influenced by Fe or Mn content, and to a lesser degree by organic matter. Prediction of metal bioaccumulation in polychaetes was greatly improved by normalizing metal concentrations to Mn content in sediment. The geochemical fractionation of metals in sediments including the exchangeable, organic matter and Fe-Mn oxides were important in controlling the sediment metal bioavailability to polychaetes.

A review of seafood safety after the deepwater horizon blowout

BACKGROUND

The Deepwater Horizon (DH) blowout resulted in fisheries closings across the Gulf of Mexico. Federal agencies, in collaboration with impacted Gulf states, developed a protocol to determine when it is safe to reopen fisheries based on sensory and chemical analyses of seafood. All federal waters have been reopened, yet concerns have been raised regarding the robustness of the protocol to identify all potential harmful exposures and protect the most sensitive populations.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to assess this protocol based on comparisons with previous oil spills, published testing results, and current knowledge regarding chemicals released during the DH oil spill.

METHODS

We performed a comprehensive review of relevant scientific journal articles and government documents concerning seafood contamination and oil spills and consulted with academic and government experts.

RESULTS

Protocols to evaluate seafood safety before reopening fisheries have relied on risk assessment of health impacts from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposures, but metal contamination may also be a concern. Assumptions used to determine levels of concern (LOCs) after oil spills have not been consistent across risk assessments performed after oil spills. Chemical testing results after the DH oil spill suggest PAH levels are at or below levels reported after previous oil spills, and well below LOCs, even when more conservative parameters are used to estimate risk.

CONCLUSIONS

We recommend use of a range of plausible risk parameters to set bounds around LOCs, comparisons of post-spill measurements with baseline levels, and the development and implementation of long-term monitoring strategies for metals as well as PAHs and dispersant components. In addition, the methods, results, and uncertainties associated with estimating seafood safety after oil spills should be communicated in a transparent and timely manner, and stakeholders should be actively involved in developing a long-term monitoring strategy.
