Abstract
This paper introduces an integrated workflow that effectively evaluates environmental and health risks of dioxin-like Persistent Organic Pollutants (dl-POPs) at industrial hotspot regions. The developments of validated, cost effective and user-friendly analytical strategies which can be field deployable are quintessential for routine monitoring of dl-POPs, particularly in developing countries. This study addresses the lacunae by enabling an exclusive gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer based analytical workflow substituting conventional magnetic sector high resolution mass spectrometer technique and validated the methodology as per the European Union regulation 644/2017. The viable monitoring utility of the methodology for predicting enviro-food-health nexus was field-tested by analyzing fish and sediment samples from the Eloor-Edayar industrial belt, a solitary POPs hotspot in India. The profiles of congeners indicate that dl-POPs were formed through precursor pathways, suggesting the potential release of chlorinated precursor species from surrounding industrial area as the root cause. Fish samples from hotspots were observed to have 8 times higher levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/furans (PCDD/Fs) and 30 times higher levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) than the control sites. A strong statistically significant (p < 0.05) positive correlation was observed between dl-POPs levels in fish and sediment samples at the study site and the Biota sediment accumulation factors for PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs ranged from 0.019 to 0.092 and 0.004 to 0.671 respectively. The estimated weekly intake from fish consumption in the study region was observed to be 3 to 24 times higher than the maximum levels set by the European food safety authority (2 pgTEQ kg-1bwweek-1). Hence, the periodic surveillance of dl-POPs employing user friendly/validated confirmatory tools stands highly imperative to safeguard human health and environment. Abstract
PCDD/F and PCB concentrations were analysed in sediments, fish muscles, and livers collected from four lakes in Poland. In general, the fish and sediments had low levels of dioxins and PCBs. The total TEQ in the sediments was 0.12-0.47 pg WHO-TEQ g-1 dry matter (dm), the NDL-PCB content was at 0.05-0.36 ng g-1 dm. The muscles contained PCDD/F/DL-PCBs levels of 0.03-3.19 pg WHO-TEQ g-1 wet weight (ww) while the NDL-PCB content was 0.08-27.30 ng g-1 ww. The livers contained 0.73-8.74 pg WHO-TEQ g-1 ww and the NDL-PCB content was 1.52-88.84 ng g-1 ww. The potential health risk for fish consumers was assessed using the Tolerable Weekly Intake (2 pg WHO-TEQ/kg bw). The consumption of 200 g of fish containing an average PCDD/D/DL-PCB content results in an intake of 43-455% TWI and 14-150% TWI for children and adults, respectively, depending on fish species and sampling point.

Abstract
Mercury and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) accumulate in organisms through food webs and exert potentially toxic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. This study examined the levels of mercury and PCDD/Fs in organisms and sediment samples collected from a saltwater pond at the An-Shun site, a chloralkali factory that shut down in Tainan City, Taiwan. It was also a pentachlorophenol production plant. After the factories were shut down in the 1980s, mercury and PCDD/Fs contamination remained, posing severe health hazards. The correlation between PCDD/Fs congener accumulation patterns in distinct fish organs and the sediment was evaluated. Mercury and PCDD/Fs levels in all the fish samples exceeded food safety limits, and the concentrations of mercury and PCDD/Fs in each species were closely correlated (n = 12, Spearman's rank correlation [R] = 0.811, p < 0.01). The mercury concentrations were positively but non-significantly correlated with the weight (n = 11, R = 0.741, p < 0.01) and length (n = 11, R = 0.618, p < 0.05) of the species. The fish likely accumulated the contaminants through ingestion of other organisms or the sediment. However, after the pollutants entered a fish, they exhibited distinct accumulation patterns because of their differing chemical properties. Specifically, the mercury concentration was correlated with organism weight and length, whereas the PCDD/Fs concentration was associated with organ lipid content. The study results are valuable for assessing the health risks associated with ingesting mercury- and PCFF/F-contaminated seafood from the study site.

Abstract
The relationship of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in sediment, water, and fish was studied for 55 fish farms near a contaminated site in Tainan, Taiwan. Samples were collected from the farms and analyzed for seventeen 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs congeners. High correlations were found between PCDD/Fs in water and sediment in regard to both concentration and toxicity (R(2) = 0.933 for concentration and R(2) = 0.832 for toxicity). The congener profiles of the 17 PCDD/Fs in water were similar to those in the sediment. However, the PCDD/Fs congener composition in the fish and fish belly samples were different from those in the sediment and water samples obtained from the same fish farm and were also different among the fish samples. It is thus suggested that the biotic PCDD/Fs distribution is more complex than the abiotic PCDD/Fs distribution. Among the seven factors analyzed, only the lipid percentage presented a relationship with the PCDD/Fs congener composition in the fish and fish bellies. A multiple linear regression of the concentration of each congener in the fish was conducted using the concentration of each congener in the site-matched sediment and the lipid content of the fish as independent variables. The results showed that only seven PCDD/Fs congeners with a lower degree of chlorination, which were 4-6 chlorine substitutes, in the fish presented a significant correlation with the lipid content in the fish and their concentration in sediment (r > 0.65, P < 0.005 for both independent variables). In addition, the octanol-water partition coefficients were not significantly related to this distribution behavior.

Abstract
Though heavy metal such as mercury is toxic to plants and microorganisms, the synergistic activity between them may offer benefit for surviving. In this study, a mercury-reducing bacterium, Photobacterium spp. strain MELD1, with an MIC of 33 mg x kg(-1) mercury was isolated from a severely mercury and dioxin contaminated rhizosphere soil of reed (Phragmites australis). While the whole genome sequencing of MELD1 confirmed the presence of a mer operon, the mercury reductase MerA gene showed 99% sequence identity to Vibrio shilloni AK1 and implicates its route resulted from the event of horizontal gene transfer. The efficiency of MELD1 to vaporize mercury (25 mg x kg(-1), 24 h) and its tolerance to toxic metals and xenobiotics such as lead, cadmium, pentachlorophenol, pentachloroethylene, 3-chlorobenzoic acid, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and 1,2,3,7,8,9-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin is promising. Combination of a long yard bean (Vigna unguiculata ssp. Sesquipedalis) and strain MELD1 proved beneficial in the phytoprotection of mercury in vivo. The effect of mercury (Hg) on growth, distribution and tolerance was examined in root, shoot, leaves and pod of yard long bean with and without the inoculation of strain MELD1. The model plant inoculated with MELD1 had significant increases in biomass, root length, seed number, and increased mercury uptake limited to roots. Biolog plate assay were used to assess the sole-carbon source utilization pattern of the isolate and Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) productivity was analyzed to examine if the strain could contribute to plant growth. The results of this study suggest that, as a rhizosphere-associated symbiont, the synergistic activity between the plant and MELD1 can improve the efficiency for phytoprotection, phytostabilization and phytoremediation of mercury.

Abstract
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) was a commonly used fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, and bactericide in industrial, agricultural, and domestic settings; however, it was also contaminated with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). It has been reported that technical grade PCP had immunosuppressive effects and that the immune system was the major target of PCDD/PCDFs toxicity. Although the immune response after exposure to PCP or 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) has been studied, the toxic effects of exposure to both PCP and TCDD have not yet been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects on immune cells from mice intraperitoneally immunized with OVA and subsequently treated with PCP or TCDD alone or in combination by gavage. The animals were terminated on day 7 and 14, and the spleen and plasma samples were collected for immunotoxicity evaluation. The numbers and populations of splenocytes, T cell-derived cytokines produced by splenocytes, splenocyte-generated cytotoxicity and OVA-specific antibodies in plasma were investigated. Our results indicate that the spleen/body weight ratio and splenocyte number was reduced by TCDD alone; in addition, this reduction was enhanced when TCDD was combined with PCP. Exposure to TCDD alone or in conjunction with PCP suppressed many ovalbumin (OVA)-stimulated cytokines, including IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10. Furthermore, the immunoglobulins IgG and IgM were suppressed in mice administered by PCP alone, but the suppressive effects were greater in mice treated with TCDD alone or in combination with PCP. Co-exposure to PCP and TCDD resulted in an antagonistic effect on TCDD-induced suppression of IFN-γ and IL-10. Our results demonstrate that PCP alone is immunotoxic, regardless of the presence of TCDD. PCP led to mild changes in cytokine secretion, and it compromised splenocyte-generated cytotoxicity and IgM and IgG antibody production on day 7. The finding that PCP antagonizes TCDD-induced IFN-γ suppression could be due to the competitive binding of PCP to AhR (aryl hydrocarbon receptor).

Abstract
The results of total ammoniacal nitrogen (NH(3) + NH(4) (+)) removal in aquaculture systems using two experimental sets, aquatic seedlings produced in laboratory controlled conditions and wild seaweed (Macrocystis spp.) in reproductive state, are shown in this work. Biofiltration assays were carried out using a load of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) of 1 mg/L. Absorption rates were measured taking into account a previous surface characterization, which gave values of 44 ± 14 cm(2)/g and 18 ± 6 cm(2)/g for aquatic seedlings and wild algae, respectively. The following parameters were measured during the experimental runs: temperature, pH, O(2), illuminance or light intensity, salinity and total solids. TAN removals of 61% and 70% were achieved for the seedlings and Macrocystis spp., respectively, after 17 h of treatment. The TAN absorption results were expressed as a function of surface and mass achieving the following values: 3.0 nmol N cm(-2) h(-1) and 111 nmol N g(-1) h(-1) for the seedlings, and 6.9 nmol N cm(-2) h(-1) and 122.4 nmol N g(-1) h(-1) for the macroalgae. In the light of these biofiltration processes, the initial TAN concentration decreased by 90% for the seedlings and wild algae over approximately 110 and 41 h, respectively. In addition, TAN removals achieved with Macrocystis spp. were always higher than those obtained with aquatic seedlings for the same operating periods.

Abstract
Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) were determined in surface sediments from Lake Shihwa and from creeks that discharge into this artificial lake. The toxic equivalents (TEQs) in sediments ranged from 1.0 to 1770 pg/g dry weight, which were some of the highest values ever reported so far for coastal sediments on a global basis. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs decreased with increasing distance from the creeks to offshore regions of the lake. Based on a multivariate statistical analysis and congener profiles, it was found that high contamination by PCDD/Fs in creek sediments collected around Lake Shihwa was associated with releases from chlor-alkali processes. Significant correlations were found for total organic carbon content and the concentrations of highly chlorinated PCDD/F congeners. This is the first report to document chlor-alkali processes as a significant source of PCDD/F contamination in Korean coastal waters.

Abstract
PCDD/Fs are found as impurities in commercial pesticide sodium pentachlorophenol (Na-PCP) salt. We compared, using multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for confounding factors, serum PCDD/F levels and biochemical examinations of retired Na-PCP workers and other inhabitants living near a closed Na-PCP plant that discharged PCP-contaminated wastewater into a nearby pond in Tainan, Taiwan. In this cross-sectional study from October 2006 through May 2009, 1167 participants were divided into groups according to their occupational (retired Na-PCP plant workers versus other residents) and dietary exposure (eating polluted fish versus not eating polluted fish) to PCDD/Fs, and a general population from a large-scale survey. Serum PCDD/F levels were significantly different between these groups (range: from 22.9±10.0pg WHO(98)-TEQ(DF) g(-1) lipid in the general population to 109.6±94.5pg WHO(98)-TEQ(DF) g(-1) lipid in retired Na-PCP workers eating polluted seafood; P(trend)<0.001). Distinct patterns of PCDD/Fs congener profiles, showing a significantly higher proportion of 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxDD, and less 2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF, OCDF, were also found among workers and residents with different serum PCDD/F levels versus the general population. After adjusting for confounding factors, glucose (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 7.22 [95% CI: 4.04-12.90]), triglycerides (AOR 4.31 [95% CI: 2.57-7.22]), blood urea nitrogen (AOR 2.90 [95% CI: 1.58-5.33]), creatine (AOR 5.83 [95% CI: 1.12-30.30]) and total protein (AOR 3.74 [95% CI: 1.91-7.31]) levels in retired workers were significantly higher than in the reference group. Occupational exposure to PCDD/Fs is associated with biochemical abnormalities that may persist for years after serum PCDD/F levels have declined.
