Abstract
Zinc finger MYND-type containing 15 (ZMYND15) has been documented to play important roles in spermatogenesis, and mutants contribute to recessive azoospermia, severe oligozoospermia, non-obstructive azoospermia, teratozoospermia, even male infertility. ZMYND10 is involved in sperm motility. Whether environmental pollutants impair male fertility via regulating the expression of ZMYND15 and ZMYND10 has not been studied. Arsenic exposure results in poor sperm quality and male infertility. In order to investigate whether arsenic-induced male reproductive toxicity is related to the expression of ZMYND15, ZMYND10 and their target genes, we established a male rat model of sodium arsenite exposure-induced reproductive injury, measured sperm quality, serum hormone levels, mRNA and protein expressions of intratesticular ZMYND15 and ZMYND10 as well as their target genes. The results showed that, in addition to the increased mRNA expression of Tnp1, sodium arsenite exposure reduced sperm quality, serum hormone levels, and mRNA and protein expression of intratesticular ZMYND15 and ZMYND10 and their target genes in male rats compared with the control group (p < .05). Therefore, our study first showed that the environmental pollutant arsenic impairs sperm quality in male rats by reducing the expression of ZMYND10 and ZMYND15 and their regulatory genes, which provides a possible diagnostic marker for environmental pollutants-induced male infertility.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to assess the concentration of various heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Hg) in the blood of sheep, followed by biochemical and hematological analysis in order to reveal possible associations. Blood was collected in two different seasons: winter (fed by fodder) and spring (grazing animals). The higher concentrations of Pb (p < 0.01), Cu (p < 0.05) and Hg, but lower of Cd and Zn were found in spring. Evaluation of the biochemical and hematological parameters during different seasons showed a possible environmental effect on the health of animals. A statistically significant increase of Ca (p < 0.001), Mg (p < 0.05), urea (p < 0.001), TP (p < 0.05), glucose (p < 0.01), AST (p < 0.001), ALT (p < 0.001), ALP (p < 0.01), cholesterol (p < 0.001), bilirubin (p < 0.05), triglycerides (p < 0.001) and a decrease of P (p < 0.05), HGB (p < 0.05), MCHC (p < 0.05) and RDWc (p < 0.05) in spring was detected. The results of this study showed statistically significant correlations between Pb and ALP (r = 0.53) level in winter and between Pb and Ca (r = -0.73) in the spring. The hematological analysis revealed a significant correlation between Zn and RBC (r = 0.61), MCV (r = -0.74), MCH (r = -0.71) and between Pb and MCH (r = -0.55), PCT (r = -0.66), PDWC (r = -0.55) in the winter. A high positive significant correlations were found between Cd and RDWC (r = 0.77) and Cu and RDWC (r = 0.75). The significance of this work is the use the data in the preventive diagnosis of metabolic and production diseases. The collected data may serve as a control indicator to detect toxic hazards related to the heavy metal occurrence on animal health status.

Abstract
Nickel is an environmental pollutant that adversely affects the male reproductive system. In the present study, the effects of nickel exposure on Spodoptera litura Fabricius were investigated by feeding larvae artificial diets containing different doses of nickel for three generations. Damage to testes and effects on male reproduction were examined. The amount of nickel that accumulated in the testes of newly emerged males increased as the nickel dose in the diet increased during a single generation. Nickel exposure increased the amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and decreased the amount of glutathione in treatment groups compared with the control. The activity levels of the antioxidant response indices superoxide dismutases, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in the testes showed variable dose-dependent relationships with nickel doses and duration of exposure. Nickel doses also disrupted the development of the testes by decreasing the weight and volume of testes and the number of eupyrene and apyrene sperm bundles in treatment groups compared with the control. When the nickel-treated males mated with normal females, fecundity was inhibited by the higher nickel doses in all three generations, but fecundity significantly increased during the second generation, which received 5 mg kg(-1) nickel. Hatching rates in all treatments significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner in the three successive generations. The effects of nickel on these parameters correlated with the duration of nickel exposure. Results indicate assays of testes may be a novel and efficient means of evaluating the effects of heavy metals on phytophagous insects in an agricultural environment.

Abstract
Many evidences have surfaced the adverse effects of environmental pollutants on male reproduction. Volcanogenic pollution is understudied, although it is a well-known source of hazardous contaminants. This study aims to assess the effects of chronic exposure to volcanogenic pollution on wild mice testes by studying: (i) diameter of seminiferous tubules; (ii) relative volumetric density of different spermatogenic cells and interstitial space; (iii) damage in the seminiferous tubules and (iv) apoptotic level in the germinal epithelium. The mice from the polluted site showed higher levels of the selected heavy metals than those from the reference site. The mean diameter of seminiferous tubules and the relative volume occupied by spermatozoa and lumen in exposed mice were significantly lower than in the unexposed group. Contrarily, exposed mice showed a significantly higher relative volume occupied by interstitium, as well as, a higher degree of damage and a significantly higher number of apoptotic cells in the germinal epithelium. Results show that secondary manifestations of volcanic activity can pose a serious risk of testicular injury and therefore for male reproduction.

Abstract
There is growing interest in using wild animals to monitor the real-life cocktail effect of environmental chemicals on male reproduction. However, practical difficulties, such as long distances to the laboratory, generally prolong the time between euthanisation and specimen handling. For instance, tissue fixation is often performed on frozen material or on material where deterioration has started, which may affect tissue morphology. This study examined the effect of pre-fixation delay and freezing on mink testicular endpoints in order to determine robust endpoints in suboptimally handled specimens. Sexually mature farmed mink (n=30) selected at culling were divided into six groups and subjected to different time intervals between euthanisation and fixation or freezing: 0 hours (fixed immediately post mortem), 6 hours, 18 hours, 30 hours, 42 hours, or frozen 6 hours post mortem and thawed overnight. Unaffected endpoints when pre-fixation storage was extended to 30 hours included: area and diameter of the seminiferous tubules, length and weight of the testes, and acrosomes marked with Gata-4. Epithelial height, Sertoli cells marked with Gata-4 and cell morphology were affected endpoints after 6 hours of storage. Freezing the tissue prior to fixation severely altered cell morphology and reduced testicular weight, tubular diameter and area. Morphological changes seen after 6 hours included shredded germ cells and excess cytoplasm in seminiferous tubular lumen, chromatin rearrangements and increased germ cell death. Extended delay before fixation and freezing affected many endpoints in the mink testicular tissue. Some of these endpoints may mimic chemically induced effects, which is important to consider when evaluating specimens from wild animals for environmental toxicity.

Abstract
The present study aimed to elucidate the structural changes in testis and epididymis of adult rats following subchronic peroral administration of cadmium at 30 mg/L, diazinon at 40 mg/L, cadmium at 30 mg/L, and diazinon at 40 mg/L, respectively. At the end of 90-day experiment, the samples of the testes and epididymis were assayed by qualitative and quantitative histological methods. The testis and epididymis weights increased following exposure to cadmium and simultaneous exposure to cadmium and diazinon. Testicular damage following cadmium and diazinon coexposure was significantly less expressive than in groups with individual administration of these compounds. Cadmium caused a significant thickening of seminiferous epithelium, cellular degeneration, and necrosis. Desquamation of immature germ cells resulted in a significant increase of intraepithelial spaces and reduced tubule volume in all experimental groups. Vascular dilation and congestion were detected in the interstitial tissue. The changes in epididymal histology in the group exposed to cadmium and group exposed simultaneously included a reduction of epithelium, necrotic epithelial cells, vasoconstriction, and interstitial edema together with mononuclear cell infiltration. Results did not indicate a synergistic or any additional effect from the simultaneous administration of both toxicants. Further research is needed to determine the significance and the mechanism of the adverse effects.

Abstract
Environmental pollution results in serious health hazards to animals and blood analysis serves as a good alternative for health status assessment. The target of this study was to analyze the concentration of selected metals in equine blood, to analyze the blood parameters and to find possible correlations. Blood samples were collected from the vena jugularis of healthy adult horses. The highest concentration of all elements was found in whole blood (Cu 3.84 ± 0.90 mg L(-1); Cd = 0.81 ± 0.90 mg L(-1); Zn 26.67 ± 14.12 mg L(-1); Pb 9.33 ± 5.76 mg L(-1)). Higher concentrations of copper, cadmium, zinc and lead were detected in blood clots compared to blood sera (44.04%). A similar tendency was found for cadmium (50%), zinc (13.08%) and lead (46.02%), which showed generally higher concentrations in blood clots (cells). Correlation analysis proved some relations between analyzed elements. In blood clots there is a strong positive correlation between Cd - Pb (r = 0.93) and Zn - Pb (r = 0.71) was detected. For biochemical and hematological parameters mainly medium correlations were detected. Obtained results prove different correlations of analyzed elements in blood components as well as the effect on parameters of blood biochemical and hematological profiles.

Abstract
The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of nickel chloride (NiCl2) on secretion of progesterone (P), ultrastructure and apoptosis in porcine granulosa cells. NiCl2 was added to the cells to achieve a Ni(2+) concentration of 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1,000 μmol/L. A control group contained no NiCl2 addition. Quantification of P was performed directly from aliquots of the media from control and treated porcine granulosa cells after 48 h of culture using radioimmunoassay. Quantification of apoptotic cells was performed using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling assay, and ultrastructural changes were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy. A concentration-dependent depletion of P production was observed significantly for 1,000 μmol/L NiCl2. The percentage of apoptotic cells was increased in all experimental groups significantly only after addition of 1,000 μmol/L NiCl2. After addition of ≥250 μmol/L NiCl2, a higher incidence of euchromatin was observed. Also, lipid droplets and vacuoles in the cytoplasm increased after addition of ≥250 μmol/L NiCl2. NiCl2 induced the decrease in numbers of mitochondria and smooth endoplasmic reticulum after treatment with ≥500 μmol/L NiCl2. Our findings suggest a negative effect of NiCl2 on steroidogenesis and apoptosis as well as ultrastructure of porcine granulosa cells.
