Abstract
In this work, we used Raman spectroscopy to identify compounds present at different maturation stages of the exocarp of scarlet eggplant and two banana cultivars, 'prata' and 'nanica'. Raman spectral analyses of both fruits showed bands attributed to phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, and fatty acids. During the scarlet eggplant's maturation process, Raman spectral profile changes are mainly observed in the carotenoid content rather than flavonoids. Furthermore, it is suggested that naringenin chalcone together with β-carotene determines the orange-red color of the ripe stage. Variations in chemical composition among the maturation stages of bananas were observed predominantly in 'prata' when compared to 'nanica'. In contrast to scarlet eggplant changes in the spectral profile were more evident in the content of the flavonoid/phenolic acids. The in situ analysis was demonstrated to be useful as a guide in selecting bioactive compounds on demand from low-cost horticultural waste.

Abstract
Microorganisms have been extensively studied and used to produce a wide range of enzymes and bioactive substances for a number of uses. Cellulases have also been widely used for a variety of bioprocessing and biotransformation purposes and are acknowledged as the essential enzymes for industrial applications. Broad industrial applications and huge demand essentially require mass-scale and low-cost production of cellulase enzyme. Nevertheless, low-cost production of cellulase enzyme at industrial-level finds certain issues, and this may be mainly associated with the unavailability of cheap and effective substrate to be utilized in fermentation process. In this context, cellulosic wastes are counted as one of the suitable bioresources and have been well explored for low-cost and highly efficient cellulase enzyme productions. Further, banana peels waste is considered as the high cellulose & sugar containing food wastes which is renewable and hugely available worldwide. Therefore, the present review explores the possible utilizations of banana peels as a potential food waste to be employed as substrate to produce cellulase enzymes. Availability and compositional analysis of banana peels has been explored for the microbial cellulase production based on reported studies. Further, this review explores the applications of cellulase enzymes as antimicrobial agents. Based on the available studies and their evaluation, potential limitations and future suggestions for the production of cellulase enzymes and their applications as antibacterial agents have been provided, which have a high potential for numerous biomedical applications and may offer a new opportunity for industrial utility.

Abstract
The global consumption of a large quantity of banana generates a huge quantity of banana peels which creates the problem of its disposal and proper management. The utilization of banana peels for the extraction of resistant starch can be a valuable strategy of waste valorization with economic viability at the industrial level. Green techniques like ultrasound can be efficacious in terms of increasing the extraction efficiency and yield of resistant starch. In this study, ultrasound assisted enzymatic extraction of resistant starch was optimized using response surface methodology. The optimum yield (60.6%) of resistant starch was obtained at 35 °C temperature, 30:1 liquid to solid ratio after a treatment time of 9 min. The results showed that a combination of ultrasound treatment with enzymatic extraction of resistant starch can be an efficient approach for the valorization of banana peels. Resistant starch holds application as a valuable supplement in functional food development in the fields of dairy, bakery, beverages, etc.

Abstract
Bananas are among the world’s main economic crops and one of the world’s most-selling fresh fruits. However, a great deal of waste and by-products is produced during banana harvesting and consumption, including stems, leaves, inflorescences, and peels. Some of them have the potential to be used to develop new foods. Furthermore, studies have found that banana by-products contain many bioactive substances that have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties and other functions. At present, research on banana by-products has mainly focused on various utilizations of banana stems and leaves, as well as the extraction of active ingredients from banana peels and inflorescences to develop high-value functional products. Based on the current research on the utilization of banana by-products, this paper summarized the composition information, functions, and comprehensive utilization of banana by-products. Moreover, the problems and future development in the utilization of by-products are reviewed. This review is of great value in expanding the potential applications of banana stems, leaves, inflorescences, and peels, which will not only help to reduce waste of agricultural by-product resources and ecological pollution but will also be useful for the development of essential products as alternative sources of healthy food in the future.

Abstract
The current investigation deals with the application of a one-pot system to facilitate the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from banana peel by a combination of microwave pre-treatment and mild oxidative hydrolysis with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 0-30 wt%) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4, 0-10%). H2O2 causes decolorization of the banana peel suspension from dark brown to light yellow, while further treatment with H2SO4 produces a white suspension, indicating successful removal of the non-cellulosic components from the banana peel. This finding was further supported by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis, which showed the gradual disappearance of lignin and hemicellulose peaks with increasing H2O2 and H2SO4 concentrations. The CNCs has considerably high crystallinity, with the highest crystallinity (~85%) being obtained at 6% H2SO4. Therefore, CNCs obtained at 6% H2SO4 were selected for further characterization. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis confirmed the disintegration of the cellulose fibres into small fragments after hydrolysis. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) analyses revealed the spherical shape of the CNCs with an average size of approximately 20 nm. The CNCs have good stability with zeta potential of -42.9 mV. Findings from this study suggest that the combination of microwave pre-treatment and oxidative hydrolysis with 30 wt% H2O2 and 6% H2SO4, which is about 11 times lower than the commonly used H2SO4 concentration, is proven effective for the isolation of CNCs from banana peel. These observations are expected to provide insight into a facile and environmentally benign alternative to the conventional CNCs isolation method, using abundant and underutilized agricultural waste as feedstock.

Abstract
This study aimed to efficiently convert banana peels (BP) into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) by using an integrated mechanoenzymatic/catalytic approach. There is no report on HMF production using mechanoenzymatic hydrolysis. Moreover, this method enables saccharification of lignocellulose without bulk solvents or pretreatment. The effects of the reaction volume, milling time, and reactive aging (RAging) on the mechanoenzymatic hydrolysis of BP were studied. The solvent-free enzymatic hydrolysis of BP under RAging conditions was found to provide higher glucose (40.5 wt%) and fructose (17.2 wt%) yields than chemical hydrolysis. Next, the conversion of the resulting monosaccharides into HMF in the presence of the AlCl3·H2O/HCl-DMSO/H2O system resulted in 71.9 mol% yield, which is so far the highest HMF yield obtained from cellulosic food wastes. Under identical reaction conditions, direct conversion of untreated BP to HMF yielded 22.7 mol% HMF, suggesting that mechanoenzymatic hydrolysis greatly promotes the release of sugars from BP to improve HMF yield.

Plantains are termed as ‘culinary bananas’ due to the fact that they are only consumed after cooking or other forms of processing. Providing good nutritional value and versatility in diet, it is considered as an important commercial crop and efficient dietary staple in Africa. However, irrespective of geographical locations and economic status of diverse ethnic groups plantains are consumed extensively due to its easy availability and preparation. They are prepared and consumed in numerous forms between the green and yellow stages of maturity and ripeness. The nutritional composition of plantains provides several health benefits and therapeutic applications, making it preferable for consumption. They are processed for the further development of a variety of products like biscuits, baby foods, bread, etc. The present review aims to enlist various traditional dishes and the value added products prepared from plantains after processing. It also highlights other diverse uses of plantain where all the parts of the crop are functional and demonstrates its potential in future scope.

Abstract
Contamination of water by heavy metals is a major environmental concern due to the potential ecological impact on human health and aquatic ecosystems. In this work, we studied the chemical modification of various fruit peels such as banana (BP), granadilla (GP), and orange ones (OP) in order to obtain novel bio-adsorbents to improve the removal of Zn(II) ions from 50 mg·L−1 synthetic aqueous solutions. For this purpose, sodium hydroxide and calcium acetate were employed to modify the fruit peels. The moisture, extractives, lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose contents of the raw materials were determined according to ASTM standards. The obtained bio-adsorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed the OP bio-adsorbents performed better, especially when the concentration of the modifier solutions increased, e.g., the OP particles modified using 0.8 M NaOH and Ca(CH3COO)2 solutions resulted in 97% removal of Zn(II) contaminating ions and reached a maximum adsorption capacity of 27.5 mg Zn per gram of bio-adsorbent. The adsorption processes were found to follow a pseudo-second order model. The error function sum of square error indicated the Freundlich isotherm (non-linear regression) as best fit model. The obtained results are particularly interesting for material selection in wastewater treatment technologies based on contaminant adsorption.

Abstract
In this paper, a review of the compatibility of polymeric membranes with lignocellulosic biomass is presented. The structure and composition of lignocellulosic biomass which could enhance membrane fabrications are considered. However, strong cell walls and interchain hindrances have limited the commercial-scale applications of raw lignocellulosic biomasses. These shortcomings can be surpassed to improve lignocellulosic biomass applications by using the proposed pretreatment methods, including physical and chemical methods, before incorporation into a single-polymer or copolymer matrix. It is imperative to understand the characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass and polymeric membranes, as well as to investigate membrane materials and how the separation performance of polymeric membranes containing lignocellulosic biomass can be influenced. Hence, lignocellulosic biomass and polymer modification and interfacial morphology improvement become necessary in producing mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In general, the present study has shown that future membrane generations could attain high performance, e.g., CO2 separation using MMMs containing pretreated lignocellulosic biomasses with reachable hydroxyl group radicals.

Abstract
Nutritional quality and the well-being of the body system are directly linked aspects of human survival. From the unborn foetus to adulthood, the need for sustainable access to micronutrient-rich foods is pertinent and the global consumption of banana and plantain fruits, in effect, contributes to the alleviation of the scourge of malnutrition. This review is particularly aimed at evaluating the pharmacological dimensions through the biological mechanisms of Musa fruits in the body, which represent correlations with their constituent micronutrient factors and dietary polyphenolic constituents such as minerals, vitamin members, anthocyanins, lutein, α-,β- carotenes, neoxanthins and cryptoxanthins, epi- and gallo catechins, catecholamines, 3-carboxycoumarin, β-sitosterol, monoterpenoids, with series of analytical approaches for the various identified compounds being highlighted therein. Derivative value-products from the compartments (flesh and peel) of Musa fruits are equally highlighted, bringing forth the biomedicinal and nutritional relevance, including the potentials of Musa species in dietary diversification approaches.

Abstract
Banana and plantain contribute significantly to food security and amelioration of malnutrition, earning their status as staples in several localities of tropical and sub-tropical regions. The distribution of metabolites within the various parts also remains as a key essential to their nutritive and therapeutic potential. This study was aimed at evaluating the nutritional and mineral composition of the flesh, peel, and peel extract components of Musa sinensis L. and Musa paradisiaca L. fruits as well as their nutritional and therapeutic potentials. Proximate and antinutritional analyses were carried out using standard analytical methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC), while the mineral constituents were evaluated using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Proximate analysis revealed that the flesh and peel of M. sinensis L. and M. paradisiaca L. contain substantial amounts of moisture, fiber, carbohydrates, and low fat content, while minerals K, Mg, Ca, Na, P, and N were substantially concentrated in the peels and peel extracts in particular. The antinutrients alkaloid, oxalate, saponin, and phytate were detected in safe amounts according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The study points out that the peel and its derivative extract, as well as the flesh of M. sinensis L. and M. paradisiaca L. are to be put to more relevant human nutritional and therapeutic use.

Abstract
Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are used as nutritious foods, and at the same time, are a source of phytoconstituents for the pharmaceutical industry. As biological activities of especially the pulp and peel of Musa spp. have been documented, this study investigated the variation in the secondary metabolite profiles of the leaves from field, in vitro-grown and acclimatized accessions. The genetic fidelity of the diverse accessions was assessed using diversity array technology sequencing. It showed that the in vitro-grown accessions were true-to-type with the field samples. The antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities of the samples from different culture systems (field and in vitro) were evaluated by UV-spectrophotometry and compared to high-performance thin-layer chromatography-effect-directed analysis (HPTLC-EDA). The latter was applied for the first time for effect-directed profiling of the polar and medium polar sample components via different biochemical and biological assays. Compound zones showed acetyl-/butylrylcholinesterase inhibition (zones 1-4), α-/β-glucosidase inhibition (zones 1 and 2) as well as antioxidative (zones 1-3) and antimicrobial (zone 4) activities. Structures were preliminary assigned by HPTLC-HRMS. The HPTLC was effective for bioactivity-guided characterization of the bioactive constituents in Musa spp. accessions. Accumulation of useful metabolites, especially compounds with antioxidant and anticholinesterase properties, was higher in samples from in vitro system. This validated the use of plant tissue culturing as an alternative method for large scale production of plant material and supply of bioactive constituents.
