Abstract
BACKGROUND Mood and psychotic disorders are both associated with verbal memory impairments. Verbal memory represents an important treatment target for both disorders. However, whether the neurocognitive and neurophysiological profiles of verbal memory impairments differ between specific disorders within these two diagnostic categories and healthy controls remains unclear. The current systematic review synthesized findings from comparative studies which used behavioural and neuroimaging tasks to investigate verbal memory impairments between: (1) mood disorder, psychotic disorder, and healthy control groups; and (2) mood disorder without psychotic features, mood disorder with psychotic features, and healthy control groups. METHODS The search strategy combined terms related to three main concepts: 'mood disorders', 'psychotic disorders', and 'verbal memory'. Searches were executed in Embase, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, and PubMed databases. A total of 38 articles met the full eligibility criteria and were included in the final narrative synthesis. Findings were stratified by memory domain (overall composite score, verbal working memory, immediate recall, delayed recall, and recognition memory) and by illness phase (acute and non-acute). RESULTS Mood and psychotic disorders displayed consistent verbal memory impairments compared to healthy controls during the acute and non-acute phases. Few significant differences were identified in the literature between mood and psychotic disorders, and between mood disorders with and without psychotic features. Individuals with schizophrenia were found to have decreased immediate and delayed verbal recall performance compared to bipolar disorder groups during the acute phase. Major depressive disorder groups with psychotic features were also found to have decreased delayed verbal recall performance compared to those without psychosis during the acute phase. No consistent differences were identified between mood and psychotic disorders during the non-acute phase. Finally, preliminary evidence suggests there may be functional abnormalities in important frontal and temporal brain regions related to verbal memory difficulties in both mood and psychotic disorders. DISCUSSION The current findings have potential implications for the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairments in mood and psychotic disorders. Verbal recall memory may serve as a sensitive tool in the risk stratification of cognitive impairments for certain mood and psychotic disorders. Moreover, since no widespread differences between clinical groups were identified, the evidence supports providing targeted interventions for verbal memory, such as pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, through a trans-diagnostic approach in mood and psychotic disorders.

Abstract
Emotional bias in attention and memory is well researched in depression. Patients with depression prioritize processing of negative information over positive input. While there is evidence that emotional bias exists in seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during winter, it is unclear whether such altered cognition exists also during summer. Moreover, it is unclear whether such bias affects attention, memory, or both. In this study, we investigated 110 individuals in summer, 34 of whom reported suffering from low mood during winter, according to the seasonal pattern assessment questionnaire. While the electroencephalogram was recorded, participants learned 60 emotional pictures and subsequently were asked to recognize them in an old/new task. There were no clear group differences in behavioral measures, and no brain response differences in frontal alpha power during learning. During recognition, at 100-300 ms post stimulus individuals with higher seasonality scores exhibited larger alpha power in response to negative as compared to neutral stimuli, while individuals with low seasonality scores exhibited larger alpha power in response to positive as compared to neutral stimuli. While we cannot draw conclusions whether this is an effect of attention or memory, the finding suggests that early cognitive processes are altered already during summer in individuals with increased likelihood to experience SAD during winter. Our data provide evidence for an all-year-round cognitive vulnerability in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lifetime psychotic symptoms are present in over half of the patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and can have an adverse effect on its course, outcome, and treatment. However, despite a considerable amount of research, the impact of psychotic symptoms on BD remains unclear, and there are very few systematic reviews on the subject.
AIM To examine the extent of psychotic symptoms in BD and their impact on several aspects of the illness.
METHODS The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines were followed. An electronic literature search of six English-language databases and a manual search was undertaken to identify published articles on psychotic symptoms in BD from January 1940 to December 2021. Combinations of the relevant Medical Subject Headings terms were used to search for these studies. Articles were selected after a screening phase, followed by a review of the full texts of the articles. Assessment of the methodological quality of the studies and the risk of bias was conducted using standard tools.
RESULTS This systematic review included 339 studies of patients with BD. Lifetime psychosis was found in more than a half to two-thirds of the patients, while current psychosis was found in a little less than half of them. Delusions were more common than hallucinations in all phases of BD. About a third of the patients reported first-rank symptoms or mood-incongruent psychotic symptoms, particularly during manic episodes. Psychotic symptoms were more frequent in bipolar type I compared to bipolar type II disorder and in mania or mixed episodes compared to bipolar depression. Although psychotic symptoms were not more severe in BD, the severity of the illness in psychotic BD was consistently greater. Psychosis was usually associated with poor insight and a higher frequency of agitation, anxiety, and hostility but not with psychiatric comorbidity. Psychosis was consistently linked with increased rates and the duration of hospitalizations, switching among patients with depression, and poorer outcomes with mood-incongruent symptoms. In contrast, psychosis was less likely to be accompanied by a rapid-cycling course, longer illness duration, and heightened suicidal risk. There was no significant impact of psychosis on the other parameters of course and outcome.
CONCLUSION Though psychotic symptoms are very common in BD, they are not always associated with an adverse impact on BD and its course and outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Negative auditory verbal hallucination (AVH) content is a major predictor of distress and typically occurs more frequently than positive or neutral content. Recent research has found that negative views of self are associated with the negative content of AVHs. However, research investigating the role of self in AVH content is in its infancy and warrants further study. DESIGN The current study examined correspondence between negative voice content and internalized representations of self, using a self-discrepancy paradigm incorporating multiple domains of self (ideal, ought, and feared). It also considered the impact of depression and anxiety. METHOD An adapted self-discrepancy questionnaire was administered to a transdiagnostic clinical sample of 86 current voice-hearers. Participants rated how similar they believed themselves to be (actual self), and how similar their voices would say they are (voice self), to their ideal, ought, and feared self-concepts. RESULTS Voice content was related to how the person viewed themselves in relation to their ideal, ought, and feared self-concepts. Additionally, voices reflected negative feared self-concepts, particularly in people with anxiety. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide further insight into the phenomenon of hearing voices and have the potential to change the way we approach formulation and treatment of AVHs. In particular, treatment approaches that reduce discrepancies between how one views themselves and their positive and negative self-concepts, or alter the relationship one has with their self-concepts and negative voices, have the potential to reduce the impact of distressing voices. PRACTITIONER POINTS Voice experiences can be meaningfully related to how the person views themselves in relation to concepts of their ideal, ought, and feared selves Negative voice content might be understood as reflecting discrepancies from these self-representations, which may have a self-regulatory function in relation to goal-directed behaviour. Identifying how voice content relates to self could be useful in not only challenging the extent of perceived self-discrepancies, but also considering how to enact valued parts of self.

Abstract
The content of AVHs is a major predictor of distress. Although the relationship between mood and AVH content is considered of diagnostic relevance, research investigating the role of depression and anxiety in AVH content remains limited. This study investigated subtypes of negative AVH content, comprising critical, threatening, and self-harm commands in affective and non-affective psychosis. In addition, the study investigated relationships between negative, critical, threatening and self-harm related AVH content and depression and anxiety. Results showed that AVH content did not vary between affective and non-affective psychosis. Among affective voice-hearers, critical, threatening and self-harm content was predicted by anxiety. Whereas in non-affective voice-hearers, self-harm content was predicted by depression. Findings suggest that in affective psychosis, "mood" may be more relevant to whether people hear voices per se, given that by definition voices only arise in mood episodes, whereas anxiety appears to be important in influencing content. In contrast, anxiety and depression may have little influence over voice content in non-affective psychosis, with the exception of depression in self-harm commands. As such, anxiety should be considered in the formulation and treatment of negative AVHs in affective psychosis, and depression in non-affective voice-hearers with self-harm commands.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotional memory is a critical amygdala-dependent cognitive function characterized by enhanced memory for emotional events coupled with retrograde amnesia. Our study aims to assess the influence of bipolar disorder (BD), trauma, and the number of mood episodes on emotional memory. METHODS 53 subjects (33 euthymic patients with BD and 20 healthy controls) answered a clinical assessment, childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ), and an emotional memory test composed of lists of nouns, including neutral words, one emotional (E), one preceding (E-1) and one following word (E + 1). We assessed for the influence of type, position, diagnosis, trauma, and number of mood episodes in word recall using generalized estimating equations. RESULTS Controlling for neutral words, BD had a higher recall for E-1 (p = 0.038) and a trend for a higher recall of E (p = 0.055). There was no difference between patients with and without trauma. Patients with BD who suffered multiple mood episodes had a higher recall of E compared to patients with fewer episodes (p = 0.016). LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional design and small sample size. CONCLUSION Our results indicate dysfunction in emotional memory in patients with BD, particularly after multiple mood episodes. While we expected an impaired emotional memory, patients with BD showed an increased recall for emotional stimuli and events preceding them. Childhood trauma does not seem to interfere with emotional memory changes in patients with BD. Emotional memory enhancement seems to be a promising marker of progression in BD.

Abstract
Research suggests that major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are both associated with unique emotional memory (EM) biases. To better elucidate the EM phenotypes of these disorders, we systematically reviewed the literature on non-autobiographical explicit EM biases in individuals with MDD and BD compared to healthy controls. The following databases were searched: Cochrane, Embase, HAPI, LILACs, Medline, PsycInfo and Web of Science. Grey literature and hand searches were also performed. Fourteen studies met full eligibility criteria. Eleven studies included data from an MDD sample (10 during acute depression, 1 during euthymia) and 3 studies included data from a BD sample (2 during acute mood episodes, 1 during euthymia). Only 3 of the studies in acute depression revealed a negative explicit EM bias. One study in MDD during euthymia revealed an EM deficit for negative stimuli. One of the two studies in BD (type I; BD-I) during an acute mood episode revealed a positive explicit EM bias, while the other showed no bias. One study in BD during euthymia showed an EM deficit for negative stimuli. Overall, this review concludes that current empirical evidence does not readily support the existence of an explicit EM bias in MDD during acute depression. The identification and implications of potential moderating factors on explicit EM performance in MDD and BD during both illness stages are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been suggested that patients with bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms (BD-P) have larger neurocognitive impairment than patients with bipolar disorder without a history of psychotic symptoms (BD-NP). The objective of this study was to compare neurocognitive performance of BD-P and BD-NP relative to a group of patients with schizophrenia (SZ), and healthy controls (HC). METHODS Neurocognitive function was examined in 100 subjects with bipolar I disorder (50 BD-P, 50 BD-NP), 50 SZ, and 51 HC. All patients with BD fulfilled criteria for euthymia, while all SZ patients were stabilised for at least the previous 3 months. RESULTS Patients with BD-P and BD-NP performed worse than HC in all neurocognitive measures, except for sustained attention. Differences between BD-P and BD-NP were subtle and circumscribed to the working memory domain (effect size: 0.29). SZ performed worse than BD-NP in the neurocognitive composite index (NCI) and in the working memory domain. There were no differences between SZ and BD-P in any neurocognitive measure. LIMITATIONS The relatively small sample size, the cross-sectional design and, that patients were receiving pharmacological treatment are the main limitations of this study. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show that the three groups of patients have a large neurocognitive impairment. Differences are quantitative and only present in some neurocognitive domains, such as working memory. These results suggest that patients with BD and SZ can benefit from the same strategies of cognitive remediation.

Abstract
AIM We carried out a systematic review of the available literature about potential biomarkers of psychotic bipolar disorder (BD-P), a specific subset presenting worse outcome and greater risk of relapse than non-psychotic bipolar disorder (BD-NP). METHODS We searched the main psychiatric databases (PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, PsychInfo). Only original articles with the main topic of BD-P compared to schizophrenia/BD-NP/healthy controls (HC) written in English from 1994 to 2015 were included. RESULTS BD-P patients presented higher kynurenic acid levels in the cerebrospinal fluid, elevated anti- S accharomyces cerevisiae antibodies levels, and lower serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and progesterone than BD-NP/HC. Event-related potentials abnormalities have been identified in BD-P with respect to BD-NP. BD-P patients also presented bigger ventricles but similar hippocampal volumes compared to BD-NP/HC. Although the results are contrasting, some cognitive deficits seemed to be related to the psychotic dimension of bipolar affective disorder, such as impairment in verbal/logical memory, working memory, verbal and semantic fluency and executive functioning. Finally, polymorphisms of genes, such as NRG1, 5HTTLPR (s), COMT, DAOA and some chromosome regions (16p12 and 13q), were positively associated with BD-P. CONCLUSION Data about the identification of specific biomarkers for BD-P are promising, but most of them have not yet been replicated. They could lead the clinicians to an early diagnosis and proper treatment, thus ameliorating outcome of BD-P and reducing the biological changes associated with a long duration of illness. Further studies with bigger samples are needed to detect more specific biological markers of the psychotic dimension of bipolar affective disorder.

Abstract
Although it is well established that Bipolar Disorder (BD) is characterized by excessive positive emotionality, the cognitive and neural processes that underlie such responses are unclear. We addressed this issue by examining the role that an emotion regulatory process called self-distancing plays in two potentially different BD phenotypes-BD with vs. without a history of psychosis-and healthy individuals. Participants reflected on a positive autobiographical memory and then rated their level of spontaneous self-distancing. Neurophysiological activity was continuously monitored using electroencephalogram. As predicted, participants with BD who have a history of psychosis spontaneously self-distanced less and displayed greater neurophysiological signs of positive emotional reactivity compared to the other two groups. These findings shed light on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying excessive positive emotionality in BD. They also suggest that individuals with BD who have a history of psychosis may represent a distinct clinical phenotype characterized by dysfunctional emotion regulation.
