Abstract
BACKGROUND Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterized by hyperglycemia during pregnancy. There are many diabetes-specific tools for collecting information validated in Brazilian Portuguese. However, there are no specific instruments to assess knowledge about GDM in Brazilian Portuguese. The aim of this study was to cross-culturally adapt and validate the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Knowledge of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus questionnaire (GDMKQ). METHODS This study was conducted in southern Brazil from January to December 2023. Women with GDM or diabetes identified during pregnancy were considered eligible based on specific criteria. Clinical and demographic data were obtained through a medical records search. The GDMKQ underwent a multistep adaptation process, including translation, back-translation, content validity assessment, and cognitive interviews. After administration to participants, internal consistency, item-total correlation, and intraclass correlation were assessed. Confirmatory factor analysis was also conducted to ensure validity. RESULTS A total of 155 pregnant women were recruited for the study. Most participants were aged 18-30 years, and hypertension was the main comorbidity (25.2%). Regarding education, most participants (58.7%) attended high school. The Brazilian Portuguese version of the GDMKQ consisted of 32 items. The intraclass correlation was established by two independent interviews with 57 participants, yielding a correlation coefficient of 0.79 (p < 0.01). Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) was 0.81 overall but was less than 0.7 for each domain. Item-total correlations were calculated, and confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good model fit. The final Brazilian Portuguese version of the questionnaire consisted of 32 items. CONCLUSIONS The Brazilian Portuguese version of the GDMKQ yielded a reliable and valid tool for evaluating diabetes knowledge in pregnant women.

Abstract
Introduction Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the fastest growing type of diabetes in many countries worldwide, including Australia. Although studies have explored the experiences of women with GDM from ethnic minority groups, few have compared their experiences with women from Anglosphere backgrounds. Objective To investigate the responses to diagnosis, the management of GDM, and the experiences of healthcare services among women with GDM from different culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Methods Participants were recruited via convenience sampling by advertisement posted around antenatal clinics of three hospitals in NSLHD: Royal North Shore, Hornsby, and Manly Hospitals. The interviews were semi-structured, one-on-one, and in-person conducted by a trained female volunteer. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed into text. The data was analyzed via an inductive and descriptive coding approach. The codes were then categorized into main themes and sub-themes. Results 30 women (7 Australian-born, 11 Chinese, 8 Indians, and 4 Koreans) partook the semi-structured interviews and 5 themes were identified: (1) Reaction to diagnosis; (2) Management issues; (3) Roles of friends and family; (4) Information access; and (5) Experience with healthcare services. The lack of culturally tailored dietary information, social support and language barriers were the main factors underpinning the differences in GDM experiences among women from CALD backgrounds versus Australian-born. Conclusion Healthcare models should provide more emotional support upon diagnosis, culturally tailored guidelines for lifestyle modifications, and involve friends and family in care and management to enhance the experience of GDM for women from CALD backgrounds.

Abstract
Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a carbohydrate intolerance of variable severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy; it does not include diabetics who become pregnant or women who become lactosuric. Knowledge of this problem among the public will promote its prevention, screening, and treatment strategies. This study aims to assess the knowledge of GDM regarding its risk factors, screening, treatment, and complications among women in the Al Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted among 617 females aged 18 years and older through convenience sampling between October 2022 and January 2023. An online questionnaire was distributed using Google Forms (Google LLC, Mountain View, CA, USA) and WhatsApp (Meta, Menlo Park, CA, USA). Data was entered, cleaned, and analyzed using SPSS Statistics version 27 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Informed consent was obtained from every participant, and the participants' information was kept confidential. Results In this study, 52.4% of the women (323/617) had moderate knowledge, and 27.6% (170/617) had excellent knowledge about GDM. Only 13.3% (n = 82) knew the optimum time (24 to 28 weeks of gestational age) for gestational diabetes screening in the absence of risk factors. Moreover, 44.6% (n = 275) knew that insulin is one of the treatments for gestational diabetes, while 45.4% (n = 280) knew that gestational diabetes increases a baby's risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) later in life. A statistically significant association was found between the development of GDM with multigravida (19.5%), a BMI of >25 (15%), and age 31 to 45 years (17.8%), with corresponding p-values of 0.001, 0.0001, and 0.0001, respectively. Conclusion In this study, almost four-fifths of the study population had moderate to excellent knowledge regarding GDM. However, there is a need to enhance knowledge about optimum screening time and insulin use for gestational diabetes treatment. Therefore, encouraging the existing population to learn more about diabetes education programs and health promotional measures should be undertaken periodically. Further studies are required to support this study's findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is currently rising. Assessing GDM knowledge and taking various public health actions will help pregnant women know more about the condition, resulting in its prevention. OBJECTIVE To assess pregnant women's knowledge of GDM and associated factors at antenatal care clinics of public hospitals in the North Shewa zone, Oromia region, Central Ethiopia. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Five public hospitals of North Shewa zone, Oromia regional state, Central Ethiopia. PARTICIPANTS A total of 417 pregnant women. METHODS A face-to-face interview was conducted. A 13-items tool was used to measure GDM knowledge. Multivariable binary logistic regression was fitted to identify factors associated with the knowledge of GDM. The adjusted OR (AOR) with 95% CI and a p<0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. RESULTS Overall, 48% (95% CI 43.4% to 52.8%) of pregnant women had sufficient knowledge about GDM. The level of sufficient knowledge for GDM risk factors, screening/treatment and its consequences were 48%, 54.4% and 99%, respectively. Age group 15-24 years (AOR 3.49, 95% CI 1.05 to 11.59), attending secondary and above education (AOR 4.27, 95% CI 1.29 to 14.070, women whose partners attended primary school (AOR 3.83, 95% CI 1.36 to 10.78), history of GDM (AOR 3.36, 95% CI 1.68 to 6.71), history of hypertension (AOR 2.42, 95% CI 1.21 to 4.84), receiving preconception care (AOR 3.02, 95% CI 1.74 to 5.22) and being multigravida (AOR 3.19, 95% CI 1.52 to 6.67) were factors significantly associated with sufficient knowledge about GDM. CONCLUSION Overall, more than half of pregnant women have insufficient knowledge about GDM. Significant association between GDM knowledge and women's age, women's and partners' educational status, preconception care, history of GDM and hypertension, and the number of pregnancies were detected. Therefore, to increase pregnant women's GDM knowledge, health education programmes in the community and healthcare facilities should target the identified factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The International Association of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) criteria have been heavily scrutinised with concerns that the consequent GDM prevalence increase has not been associated with improved perinatal outcomes. AIMS At a tertiary hospital in Melbourne, Australia we aimed to evaluate prevalence trends for GDM, type 2 diabetes (T2DM), maternal obesity and large-for-gestational age (LGA) and assess changes in perinatal outcomes following IADPSG criteria uptake in 2015. METHODS A retrospective cohort study of singleton births from 20 weeks' gestation was conducted between 1st January 2011 and 31st December 2020. Maternal characteristics and perinatal outcomes were extracted from medical records. RESULTS 52,795 pregnancies were included. GDM prevalence increased 2.7 times from 8.9% in 2011 to 23.7% in 2020 and increased annually by 8.59% (95%CI 7.77, 9.42). The rate of T2DM increased annually by 11.69% (95%CI 7.72, 16.67). Obesity prevalence increased annually by 3.18% (95%CI 2.58, 3.78). Induction of labour (IOL) prevalence increased annually by 8.35% (95%CI 5.69, 11.06). LGA prevalence remained unchanged. Increasing maternal obesity was the major contributing factor for LGA prevalence. CONCLUSIONS From 2011 to 2020 GDM, obesity and T2DM prevalence increased significantly, with associated increased IOL, without change in LGA rates. Prospective studies are required to explore interactions between GDM, obesity, LGA and obstetric interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is experienced at a higher rate in women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. The aim of this systematic review is to describe the experiences of women with GDM from CALD backgrounds and compare their experiences to women with GDM from non-CALD backgrounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Scopus, WOS and CINAHL databases were searched for qualitative and quantitative studies which included data on the experiences of CALD background women with GDM during all stages of pregnancy. Quality appraisal utilized checklists for analytical cross-sectional studies and qualitative research. Thematic analysis was performed using nVivo software. RESULTS Of the 3054 studies identified, 24 studies met the inclusion criteria. Data synthesis produced five key themes: (1) Response to diagnosis, (2) Experiences with self-management, (3) Interactions with the healthcare system, (4) Mental health challenges and (5) Facilitators and barriers to support. Women with GDM from CALD and non-CALD backgrounds similarly expressed mental health challenges, feeling burdened by recommendations, and challenges interacting with healthcare professionals (HCP). The major difference in experience was the cultural relevance of recommendations, especially related to diet recommendations. CONCLUSION Gestational diabetes mellitus is a burdensome diagnosis for CALD and non-CALD women, with CALD women uniquely experiencing a lack of culturally relevant recommendations for self-management. The similarities and differences in experience call for optimisation of GDM management and support for women with GDM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous research on seasonal variation in the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has shown inconclusive results. Furthermore, little is known about whether a seasonal variation in GDM might be associated with the maternal country of birth. We examined whether there was seasonal variation in GDM incidence by the maternal country background. DESIGN National population-based registry study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS We used national population-based data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN), n=1 443 857 (1990-2016) and data from four merged community-based studies (4GDM) with universal screening for GDM, n=2 978 (2002-2013). OUTCOME MEASURES The association between season of pregnancy onset with incidence of GDM was examined separately in both datasets using logistic regression analyses, stratified by the mother's country background using two broad geographical categories (MBRN: Norwegian and immigrant; 4GDM: European and African/Asian ethnicity). Winter season was used as reference category. RESULTS The incidence of GDM in MBRN was highest when the pregnancy started during the winter (Norwegian-born: 1.21%; immigrants: 3.32%) and lowest when pregnancy started during the summer for both Norwegian and immigrant women (Norwegian-born: 1.03% (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.81 to 0.98); immigrants: 2.99% (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.84 to 0.96)). The 4GDM data showed that women with European ancestry had the highest incidence of GDM when pregnancy started during autumn (10.7%, OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.69 to 1.46) and winter (10.6%), while ethnic African and Asian women had the highest incidence when pregnancy onset was during the summer (15.3%, OR 1.17, 95% CI 0.54 to 2.53). CONCLUSIONS Based on national population-based data, this study suggests that GDM incidence varies by season in both Norwegian-born and immigrant women. The 4GDM dataset did not show a clear seasonal variation in GDM incidence, possibly due to the relatively small sample. Causes for the seasonal variation in GDM should be explored further.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) burden is burgeoning globally. Correct knowledge about GDM among young people is paramount for timely prevention. This study assesses GDM knowledge and identifies factors associated with it among United Arab Emirates (UAE) University students. A validated self-administered questionnaire collected data from the university students. We analyzed the data for GDM knowledge status (ever heard of GDM) and GDM knowledge levels (poor, fair, and good) and conducted ordinal logistic regressions to assess for associated factors. A total of 735 students were surveyed with a mean age of 21.0 years. Of these, 72.8% had heard of GDM, and 52.9% of males versus 20.3% of female students had never heard of the condition before. Higher age (p = 0.019) and being a postgraduate student (p = 0.026) were associated with higher GDM knowledge status in males. GDM knowledge level analysis showed that 24.0%, 58.5%, and 17.5% had poor, fair, and good knowledge. The mean GDM-knowledge score was 6.3 ± 2.4 (out of 12). Being married [aOR-1.82 (95%CI 1.10–3.03)] and knowing someone who had GDM [aOR-1.78 (95%CI 1.23–2.60)] were independently associated with higher GDM knowledge levels among students. Students’ primary source of GDM knowledge was family/friends. There is an observed knowledge gap related to GDM among the students, especially males. This study urges the need to accelerate targeted GDM awareness campaigns among university students and the general population in the UAE.

Abstract
Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a type of diabetes mellitus known as any stage of glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. Awareness of GDM is the first step toward its screening in pregnancy. This study was designed to assess knowledge of GDM, its screening, and risk factors among Saudi women attending primary healthcare center in Almadinah Almunawarah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methods This was an observational cross-sectional study conducted on Saudi women who attended the primary healthcare centers in Almadinah Almunawarah during the study period from January 2021 to June 2021. The sampling technique used was the stratification of primary healthcare centers in Madinah. According to the Epi-Info, version 3.5.1, the minimum sample size was 292. Data collection was done using a valid, Arabic self-administered questionnaire, which was composed of two main parts: general sociodemographic data and a questionnaire to assess GDM knowledge and awareness (12 questions). Data was recorded and analyzed using SPSS version 26. Results In this study, 333 women were enrolled with an age range between 18 and 60 years, with a mean of 34.31±9.21 years. Overall, more than half of the women (53.45%) had a poor level of knowledge related to GDM, whereas only 7.80% had a good level of knowledge. Results of multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that women living in rural areas were at almost four-fold higher risk of having a poor level of knowledge (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 3.97; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.44-41.98, p=0.0031). With a one-year increase in women’s age, the risk of poor knowledge increased by 4% (aOR: 1.38; 95% CI: 1.08-1.48, p=0.001). In comparison to illiterate women, university-graduated and postgraduate women had a significantly lower risk of poor knowledge (aOR: 0.03; 95% CI: 0.01-0.31, p=0.001 and aOR: 0.19; 95% CI: 0.06-0.66, p = 0.011, respectively). Conclusion The GDM knowledge of Saudi adult women was poor, particularly regarding risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment with insulin. However, their knowledge regarding treatment by lifestyle and diet modifications was quite acceptable.

Abstract
Background For women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poor dietary choices can have deleterious consequences for both themselves and their baby. Diet is a well-recognised primary strategy for the management of GDM. Women who develop GDM may receive dietary recommendations from a range of sources that may be inconsistent and are often faced with needing to make several dietary adaptations in a short period of time to achieve glycaemic control. The aim of this study was to explore how women diagnosed with GDM perceive dietary recommendations and how this information influences their dietary decisions during pregnancy and beyond. Methods Women diagnosed with GDM before 30 weeks’ gestation were purposively recruited from two GDM clinics in Auckland, New Zealand. Data were generated using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysed to identify themes describing women’s perceptions and experiences of dietary recommendations for the management of GDM. Results Eighteen women from a diverse range of sociodemographic backgrounds participated in the study. Three interconnected themes described women’s perceptions of dietary recommendations and experiences in managing their GDM through diet: managing GDM is a balancing act; using the numbers as evidence, and the GDM timeframe. The primary objective of dietary advice was perceived to be to control blood glucose levels and this was central to each theme. Women faced a number of challenges in adhering to dietary recommendations. Their relationships with healthcare professionals played a significant role in their perception of advice and motivation to adhere to recommendations. Many women perceived the need to follow dietary recommendations to be temporary, with few planning to continue dietary adaptations long-term. Conclusions The value of empathetic, individually tailored advice was highlighted in this study. A greater emphasis on establishing healthy dietary habits not just during pregnancy but for the long-term health of both mother and baby is needed. Abstract
BACKGROUND Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy and is associated with an increased risk of mental health (MH) disorders including antenatal and postnatal depression (PND), anxiety and post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD). We hypothesized GDM and MH disorders will disproportionately affect individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. METHODS A systematic methodology was developed, and a protocol was published in PROSPERO (CRD42020210863) and a systematic review of publications between 1st January 1990 and 30th January 2021 was conducted. Multiple electronic databases were explored using keywords and MeSH terms. The finalised dataset was analysed using statistical methods such as random-effect models, subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis. These were used to determine odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to establish prevalence using variables of PND, anxiety, PTSD and stress to name a few. FINDINGS Sixty studies were finalised from the 20,040 data pool. Forty-six studies were included systematically with 14 used to meta-analyze GDM and MH outcomes. A second meta-analysis was conducted using 7 studies to determine GDM risk among Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic women with pre-existing MH disorders. The results indicate an increased risk with pooled adjusted OR for both reflected at 1.23, 95% CI of 1.00-1.50 and 1.29, 95% CI of 1.11-1.50 respectively. INTERPRETATION The available studies suggest a MH sequalae with GDM as well as a sequalae of GDM with MH among Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic populations. Our findings warrant further future exploration to better manage these patients. FUNDING Not applicable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to explore how women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) experience advice about diet and self-monitoring of blood glucose received in primary health care (PHC) and secondary health care (SHC) with a focus on how women perceived the care coordination and collaboration between healthcare professionals. DESIGN, SETTING AND SUBJECTS Individual interviews were conducted with 12 pregnant women diagnosed with GDM. Six women had immigrant backgrounds, and six were ethnic Norwegian. Women received GDM care in the area of Oslo, Norway. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Women described feeling shocked when they were diagnosed with GDM and feeling an immediate need for information about the consequences and management of GDM. Most of the women felt that their general practitioner (GP) had too little knowledge about GDM. Women with an immigrant background felt that the PHC midwives provided them with sufficient dietary advice related to GDM. Ethnic Norwegian women appreciated receiving more individually tailored dietary advice in SHC. Self-monitoring of blood glucose influenced women's daily lives; however, they perceived the training in PHC and SHC as adequate. The women experienced poor collaboration between healthcare professionals in PHC and SHC, which implied that they sometimes had to initiate follow-up steps in their GDM care by themselves. CONCLUSIONS Ideally, women diagnosed with GDM should meet healthcare professionals with sufficient knowledge about GDM as soon as possible after being diagnosed. Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a major public health problem and a threat to maternal and child health. There is a lack of integrated and systematically synthesized knowledge about the prevalence GDM in Norway. Therefore, this systemic review aimed to present the best available peer-reviewed published evidence from the past 20 years about the prevalence of GDM in Norway. A comprehensive literature search was performed on online databases consisting of PubMed (including Medline), Web of Science, and Scopus to retrieve original research articles published on the prevalence of GDM up to August 2020. Also, databases of Norart and SveMed+ in the Norwegian language were searched to enhance the search coverage. Data were extracted using a standardized protocol and data collection form and were presented narratively. A total of 11 studies were selected to include for data analysis and synthesis with the total sample size of 2,314,191 pregnant women. The studies included heterogenous populations and mostly reported the prevalence of GDM in healthy mothers with singleton pregnancies. The prevalence of GDM in population registered-based studies in Norway was reported to be lower than 2%, using the World Health Organization (WHO) 1999 criteria. However, studies on high-risk populations such as the non-European ethnicity reported prevalence rates ranging from 8% to 15%. Given the evidence from available literature that reported trends in the prevalence of GDM, an increase in the prevalence of GDM across most racial/ethnic groups studied in Norway was observed. Overall, the prevalence of GDM in the low risk population of Norway is fairly low, but the available literature supports the perspective that the prevalence of GDM has shown an increasing trend in recent decades. This finding is very important for health service planning and evaluation, policy development, and research in Norway. Large-scale prospective studies, using the national data, are warranted to provide firm evidence over coming years. Our review findings can help policy makers devise appropriate strategies for improving women's reproductive health.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing worldwide. A healthy diet and stable blood glucose levels during pregnancy can prevent adverse health outcomes for the mother and the newborn child. Mobile health may be a useful supplement to prenatal care, providing women with targeted dietary information concerning GDM. Objective We analyzed secondary data from a two-arm, multicentered, nonblinded randomized controlled trial to determine if a smartphone app with targeted dietary information and blood glucose monitoring had an effect on the dietary behavior of women with GDM. Methods Women with a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test level of ≥9 mmol/L were individually randomized to either the intervention group receiving the Pregnant+ app and usual care or the control group receiving usual care only. Eligible women were enrolled from 5 diabetes outpatient clinics in the Oslo region, Norway, between October 2015 and April 2017. The Pregnant+ app promoted 10 GDM-specific dietary recommendations. A healthy dietary score for Pregnant+ (HDS-P+) was constructed from a 41-item food frequency questionnaire and used to assess the intervention effect on the dietary behavior completed at trial entry and at around gestation week 36. Dietary changes from baseline to week 36 were examined by a paired sample two-tailed t test. Between-group dietary differences after the intervention were estimated with analysis of covariance, with adjustment for baseline diet. Results A total of 238 women participated: 115 were allocated to the intervention group and 123 to the control group. Of the 238 women, 193 (81.1%) completed the food frequency questionnaire both at baseline and around gestational week 36. All the participants showed improvements in their HDS-P+ from baseline. However, the Pregnant+ app did not have a significant effect on their HDS-P+. The control group reported a higher weekly frequency of choosing fish meals (P=.05). No other significant differences were found between the intervention and control groups. There were no significant demographic baseline differences between the groups, except that more women in the intervention group had a non-Norwegian language as their first language (61 vs 46; P=.02). Conclusions Our findings do not support the supplementation of face-to-face follow-up of women with GDM with a smartphone app in the presence of high-standard usual care, as the Pregnant+ app did not have a beneficial effect on pregnant women’s diet.
