Premenstrual syndrome and lifestyle: Development and validity of a Premenstrual Syndrome Quality-Of-Life Scale

BACKGROUND

Premenstrual Syndrome significantly affects young women's quality of life, encompassing psychological and clinical symptoms. The aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive and reliable Premenstrual Syndrome Quality of Life Scale and identify factors that affect women's quality of life.

METHODS

A methodological and descriptive study was conducted to develop a Premenstrual Syndrome Quality of Life Scale in three phases. Initially, a literature review and qualitative interviews were conducted to generate an item pool. In the second phase, the validity and reliability of the scale were tested. Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis were used to confirm the validity and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was calculated for reliability. In the final phase, the psychometric properties of the scale were evaluated.

RESULTS

A 28-item scale was developed in phase one. In Phase two 260 women were participated. Factor analysis confirmed the scale's validity with a KMO measure of 0.837 and significant Bartlett's Sphericity Test (p < 0.000). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit for the scale. Reliability analysis showed high reliability for the overall scale and subscales. Phase three included 212 participants diagnosed with premenstrual syndrome. There are no significant correlations between age, menarche age, and overall PMS Quality-of-Life scores. However, higher PMS severity and urban living negatively impact quality of life (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The Premenstrual Syndrome Quality of Life Scale provides a holistic assessment of premenstrual syndrome impact on women's lives, addressing physical, emotional, and social dimensions.

Patterns of premenstrual syndrome in collegiate women: A cross-sectional study

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has a wide variety of symptoms. The classification of these symptoms into several patterns is useful for more effective tailor-made treatment. Therefore, our study aimed to examine the patterns of PMS by analyzing multiple factors to identify the characteristics of each pattern. This is a cross-sectional study. A total of 165 women (18.9 ± 1.0 years) were investigated by using of questionnaire about PMS, nutrition, physical activity, and other lifestyle traits. Then, the factor analysis was performed to classify the premenstrual symptoms, that is, the pattern of PMS. Additionally, logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the characteristics of each pattern, adjusted for age, body mass index, sleep duration, and caffeine intake. As the result, PMS was classified into 3 patterns. The type related to psychological symptoms such as depression, physiological symptoms, such as abdominal pain, and intermingled type, were labeled as affected, somatic, and mixed types, respectively. From the result of logistic regression analysis, self-rating depression scale scoring was marginally associated with affective type (odds ratio [OR]: 1.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.99-1.16), physical activity was significantly associated with the mixed type (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.00-1.28), and physical activity (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.05-1.36) and some nutrients (OR: 0.56-1.00) were significantly associated with the somatic type. Understanding PMS and management of these complicated symptoms has been difficult. From the results of this study, the complicated symptoms were categorized into simpler patterns. Our findings may contribute to the understanding and possible management adjusted for each categorized case of PMS.

Premenstrual syndrome prevalence in Turkey: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome among reproductive age women living in Turkey with a systematic review and meta-analysis study. In this study were scanned keywords ['premenstrual syndrome' and prevalence and Turkish] in the databases including Turkish Medline, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus and ISI Web of Knowledge. This study included full-text research articles from conducted in Turkey, published in Turkish or English between 2014 and 2018 and indicating prevalence. This study included a total of 18 studies conducted in Turkey reporting the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome. A total of 6890 women participated in these studies. The overall premenstrual syndrome prevalence in the studies examined in this systematic review was 52.2%. Subgroup prevalence was found to be 59% in high school students, 50.3% in university students and 66% of women in general population. In the meta-regression analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between the mean age of the participants with the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome. The results of the study showed that premenstrual syndrome was prevalent among Turkish reproductive age women. Health professionals should organize training for women to gain the ability to manage PMS symptoms. Further interventional studies are needed to cope with PMS.

The effects of health belief model-based education and acupressure for coping with premenstrual syndrome on premenstrual symptoms and quality of life: A randomized-controlled trial

PURPOSE

This study investigated the effects of health belief model-based education and acupressure for coping with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) on premenstrual symptoms and quality of life.

DESIGN AND METHODS

The sample size was identified as 163 women. While the acupressure education group-administered education and acupressure, the education group-administered only education. No intervention made to the control group.

FINDINGS

There was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest total mean scores of the intervention groups compared with the control group (P < .001).

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

The education given to women for coping with PMS and acupressure both reduced premenstrual symptoms and improved quality of life.

The effects of acupressure and yoga for coping with premenstrual syndromes on premenstrual symptoms and quality of life

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to identify the effects of acupressure and yoga for coping with premenstrual syndromes (PMS) on the premenstrual symptoms and quality of life.

METHODS

This study adopted a randomized intervention design with a pretest-posttest control group. The sample consisted of 155 students with PMS complaints (50 in yoga, 51 in acupressure, and 54 in control group). The students in the intervention groups did yoga and received acupressure throughout 12 weeks.

RESULTS

It was found that the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale posttest mean score of the students was lower, and the physical health, psychological health, and environment sub-scale mean scores of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire were higher in the yoga group in comparison to the other groups (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Yoga was found to be a more effective non-pharmacological method for coping with premenstrual symptoms.

The role of immune and oxidative pathways in menstrual cycle associated depressive, physio-somatic, breast and anxiety symptoms: Modulation by sex hormones

OBJECTIVE

To examine whether 1) immune and nitro-oxidative stress (IO&NS) biomarkers are associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS); and 2) changes in IO&NS biomarkers during the menstrual cycle (MC) are associated with PMS symptoms and plasma estradiol and progesterone.

METHODS

This longitudinal study examined 41 women who completed the Daily Record of Severity of Problems (DRSP) rating scale during 28 consecutive days and assayed plasma levels of complement C3 and C4, highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), haptoglobin (Hp), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), nitric oxide metabolites (NOx), total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP), sulfhydryl (-SH) groups and the activity of paraoxonase (PON)1 at days 7 (D7), 14 (D14), 21 (D21) and 28 (D28) of the MC. MC Associated Syndrome (MCAS) was diagnosed when the summed DRSP score during the MC is >0.666 percentile.

RESULTS

All biomarkers, except hsCRP, showed significant alterations during the MC. Arylesterase (AREase) was lowered at D28, while LOOH increased at D14 and C4 at D21 in MCAS. Total DRSP scores were predicted by the combined effects of C4 (positively) and AREase and malondialdehyde (MDA) (both inversely associated). Progesterone lowered levels of LOOH, AOPP and C3 and estradiol lowered levels of Hp while both sex hormones increased 4-(chloromethyl)phenyl acetate (CMPA)ase and AREase activities and levels of -SH groups.

CONCLUSION

PMS/MCAS is not accompanied by a peripheral inflammatory response. Lowered MDA and antioxidant defenses and increased C4 may play a role in MC symptoms while sex hormones may have a protective effect against oxidative stress toxicity.
