Abstract
This review aims to identify in vivo studies investigating the potential of plant substances and their natural molecules in managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Specifically, the objective is to examine the impact of these substances on interleukins and other key inflammatory signaling markers. Relevant articles published up to December 2022 were identified through a search of the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases. The search used keywords including "inflammatory bowel disease", "medicinal plants", "natural molecules", "anti-inflammatory", and "ulcerative colitis", and identified 1,878 potentially relevant articles, of which 89 were included in this review after completion of the selection process. This study provides preclinical data on natural products (NPs) that can potentially treat IBD, including ulcerative colitis. The main actions of these NPs relate to their effects on nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), the Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling pathway, the regulation of T helper 17/regulatory T cells balance, and oxidative stress. The ability of these NPs to inhibit intestinal inflammation appears to be dependent on lowering levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-17, via the Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)1, NF-κβ-p65, and STAT3 pathways. In addition, NPs were shown to reduce oxidative stress and the severity of ulcerative colitis, as well as increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes. These actions suggest that NPs represent a promising treatment for IBD, and potentially have greater efficacy and safety than current treatments.

Abstract
The genus Amorphophallus belongs to the family Araceae. Plants belonging to this genus are available worldwide and have been used in traditional medicines since ancient times, mainly in Ayurveda and Unani medical practices. Amorphophallus species are an abundant source of polyphenolic compounds; these are accountable for their pharmacological properties, such as their analgesic, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, antiobesity, and immunomodulatory effects, as well as their ability to prevent gastrointestinal disturbance and reduce blood glucose. Moreover, Amorphophallus species contain numerous other classes of chemical compounds, such as alkaloids, steroids, fats and fixed oils, tannins, proteins, and carbohydrates, each of which contributes to the pharmacological effects for the treatment of acute rheumatism, tumors, lung swelling, asthma, vomiting, abdominal pain, and so on. Additionally, Amorphophallus species have been employed in numerous herbal formulations and pharmaceutical applications. There has been no extensive review conducted on the Amorphophallus genus as of yet, despite the fact that several experimental studies are being published regularly discussing these plants' pharmacological properties. So, this review discusses in detail the pharmacological properties of Amorphophallus species. We also discuss phytochemical constituents in the Amorphophallus species and their ethnomedicinal uses and toxicological profiles.

Abstract
Calligonum comosum is a perennial shrub growing and widely used in traditional medicinal system in Saudi Arabia. The total phenolic content and in vitro antioxidant activity were compared between the water extract (WE) and methanol extract (ME). The protective potential against acetic acid (AA) induced ulcerative colitis (UC) was also evaluated in rats. The obtained results showed that the total phenolic content of the WE and ME were 8.378 ± 0.738 and 33.819 ± 0.488 µg/mL. The antioxidant properties of the two extracts were directly influenced by their total phenolic contents. The ME with higher phenolic contents and stronger antioxidant power was more effective than the WE in protection against AA-induced colitis. Phytochemical study of the ME led to the identification of three flavonoid derivatives: (-)-epi-catechin, quercetin-3-O-α-l-arabinofuranoside (Avicularin) and quercetin-3-O-β-d-glucuronide-6″-methyl ester by various spectroscopic methods. (-)-Epi-catechin was the major component while the other two compounds were obtained in minute quantities. The anti-ulcerative colitis effect of the ME can be explained by the presence of the antioxidant flavonoids since AA-induced colitis featured by imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant substances. Further support of such explanation was provided by HPLC quantification of (-)-epi-catechin in the ME and WE. The percentage in ME was higher than the WE but the difference was higher in term of Total Phenolic Content (TPC). These results support the traditional use of C. comosum as anti-ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are two major forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The disease has been linked with gut microbiota dysbiosis in which the balance of commensal communities is disrupted. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that treatment with biologically active compounds can modulate gut microbiota composition in animal models. Our previous work has also shown the beneficial effect of Luem Pua (LP) rice extract, which is rich in anthocyanins, on inflammation. However, its effect on gut microbiota is yet to be explored. In this study, we profiled fecal microbiota of acetic acid (AA)-induced UC and indomethacin (ID)-induced CD rat models with and without pretreatment with LP rice extract by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that gut microbiota communities of rats were altered by both AA-induced UC and ID-induced CD. The relative abundances of beneficial bacteria, especially the Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 group and Lactobacillus, were decreased in the AA-induced UC model, while some opportunistic pathogens (Bacteroides, Escherichia/Shigella, Fusobacterium, and Veillonella) were raised by ID-induced CD. Interestingly, pretreatment with LP rice extract before AA-inducing UC in rats increased the proportion of the butyrate-producing bacteria (Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 group). The abundances of these beneficial bacteria and other SCFA-producing bacteria were unaffected by the indomethacin treatment with LP. Overall, our study revealed different impacts of AA-induced UC and ID-induced CD on changes in community composition and hinted at how LP may protect against UC by modifying the gut microbiota.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Stem bark of Anogeissus latifolia Roxb. (Family: Combretaceae) is used traditionally and ethnomedicinally for correction of kidney disorders. AIM OF THE STUDY The present study demonstrates the nephroprotective potential of stem bark of A. latifolia Roxb. MATERIALS AND METHODS The HPTLC fingerprint and HPLC analysis were carried out to standardize the ethanolic extract of stem bark of A. latifolia (ALEE) using ellagic acid as a marker. Nephrotoxicity was induced in adult Wistar albino rats by gentamicin (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneally for 8 days) and they were treated with ALEE (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, orally for 8 days), ellagic acid (10 mg/kg, orally for 8 days) and cystone syrup (5 ml/kg, orally), a standard reference a polyherbal formulation. Urine volume, serum and urine levels of creatinine, urea and uric acid, oxidative stress parameters (lipid peroxidation, catalase, superoxide dismutase and reduced glutathione), inflammatory markers (TNF-α and IL-6) and kidney weight along with its histological changes were studied in experimental animals. RESULTS HPTLC, HPLC and LC-MS analysis of ALEE revealed the presence of ellagic acid and other various phytoconstituents. Administration of gentamicin caused significant increase in urine output and kidney weight, elevated biochemical, inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters as well as caused histological damage in the kidney tissue. These parameters were attenuated by the concurrent treatment with ALEE and ellagic acid. The effects were comparable to cystone. CONCLUSION Present investigations concluded that ALEE exhibited nephroprotective potential and validated the traditional use of stem bark of A. latifolia in kidney disorders. The nephroprotective effect may be attributed to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytoconstituents in ALEE.

Abstract
Diabetic patients usually avoid germinated endosperm of sugar palm (GESP) and elephant foot yam tuber (EFYT), fearing that these may further deteriorate existing hyperglycemia. In the present study, this suspicion was investigated by analyzing the nutrients and following the animal experiments by supplementary feeding powder of GESP, EFYT, and their mixture in addition to the regular diet for the six consecutive weeks. Next three weeks, the powder was withdrawn, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were recorded from the beginning. The results clearly showed that these foodstuffs significantly (P < 0.001) reduced FBG levels of alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The mixture of GESP & EFYT showed the maximum antidiabetic effects followed by GESP and EFYT, respectively. GESP, as well as the mixture, returned the FBG levels of diabetic rats within the normal range by the end of the 6th week, even after withdrawing the powder, but not by the EFYT. These results suggested that the foodstuffs may restore the damaged pancreatic β-cell functions by the end of the 6th week. Nutrient contents like fiber, zinc, as well as antidiabetogenic phytochemicals present in these foodstuffs, could perform these functions. The germinated endosperm of sugar palm (Borassus flabellifer) has the highest antidiabetogenic phytochemicals. The combined impact of germinated endosperm and tuber had a significant level of antidiabetic action. Both foodstuffs were rich with a complex carbohydrate, fiber, zinc, minerals, as well as phytochemicals.

Abstract
Elephant foot yam is widely consumed as a vegetable and locally known as 'Ol' in Bangladesh. However, taboos regarding elephant foot yam are the prominent barrier for diabetic patients to consume this tuber. The study aims to judge the concept scientifically. The literature review showed that elephant foot yam tuber is a good source of carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and minerals but low in fat. Secondary metabolites viz. phytochemicals of this tuber had a significant anti-hyperglycemic effect. In conclusion, elephant foot yam tuber is safe and beneficial for patients with diabetes.

Abstract
The tubers of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Elephant foot yam), principally consumed as crop food and vegetables, are used in ethno-medicinal practices in mitigation of constipation and piles. Hence, present study evaluated the effect of tubers of A. paeoniifolius and its active constituents glucomannan and betulinic acid on experimentally-induced constipation. The tuber and its extracts were standardized as per Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and physicochemical constants were found within the pharmacopoeial limit. HPTLC fingerprint profile of extracts has been developed using suitable mobile phase. Methanolic extract was subjected to column chromatography. The isolated phytoconstituents were characterized by FT-IR, NMR and MS and identified as betulinic acid and β-sitosterol. Functional constipation was induced in rats by oral administration of loperamide (3 mg/kg) for first 3 consecutive days. The rats were orally treated with methanolic and aqueous tuber extracts in the doses of 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg, glucomannan (300 mg/kg) and betulinic acid (1.5 mg/kg) for 7 days. The parameters viz. number of stools, wet weight of stools and moisture content of stools and intestinal transit were studied. Treatment with tuber extracts, glucomannan and betulinic acid showed significant (p < 0.05) increase in fecal parameters and intestinal transit in constipated rats. The effects were comparable to standard laxative drug, sodium picosulfate (5 mg/kg, orally). The results indicated that tuber extracts and its active constituents showed laxative effect and relieved constipation. It is concluded that tuber of A. paeoniifolius exhibited beneficial effect in functional constipation possibly through its laxative action. The study validates its ethno-medicinal use in correction of constipation. The principal constituents, betulinic acid and glucomannan in tuber extracts might have played important role in relieving the constipation.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Malaria is still a highly challenging public health issue in southern Lao PDR, with increasing cases of artemisinin resistance and Plasmodium vivax infections which are more complicated to treat. Traditional medicine has a long history of use in Laos, and is primarily practised by traditional village healers, who possess unique bodies of transmitted knowledge focused on herbal prescriptions, including those for the treatment of malaria. Villagers also use plants for healthcare in the home. The aim of the study is to document local fever concepts and use of herbal remedies, and examine whether they may have potential as complementary treatments against malaria. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study took place in Champasak province in the far south of Laos, in primarily lowland areas. First, 35 traditional healers across the 10 districts of the province were interviewed to elicit details about knowledge and treatment of fevers. Second, a household survey was conducted in a village in a malaria-endemic area; 97 households were interviewed on fever incidence, differentiation, treatment-seeking behaviour and knowledge of plant-based remedies for fevers. Plants indicated by both healers and villagers were collected and voucher specimens deposited in the herbarium of the National University of Laos for identification. RESULTS Malaria is a well-known pathology among the healers and villagers of lowland Champasak province; biomedical treatments are preferentially used, but traditional medicine is a popular complementary method, especially in chronic cases with additional symptoms. 30 different fever types were recorded, which were usually named symptomatically, and grouped into 12 categories. Some were described as forms of malaria, which was conceived as a dynamic, changing pathology affecting many body systems. Healers formulate treatments based on symptoms and the person's constitution, and with the intention of creating specific pharmacological actions associated with temperature or flavours. 11 of the healers gave prescriptions for malaria (27 in total), including 47 identified plant species. The most-used plants (4 or more use-reports) were also the most cited in the literature for use against malaria, demonstrating a correspondence between Lao healers and other traditional medical systems. Furthermore, some of these species show promising results for future research, especially Amorphophallus paeniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson and Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) G. Don. CONCLUSION Traditional healers are important actors in the treatment of malaria in southern Laos, and herbal remedies should be evaluated further by the use of reverse treatment outcome trials, especially those which may be of use as complementary remedies in treating P. vivax. Initiatives on knowledge transmission, medicinal plant conservation and healthcare integration are also urgently needed.
