Multifunctional properties of CdO nanostructures Synthesised through microwave assisted hydrothermal method

Synthesis, Characterization, Photocatalysis, and Antibacterial Study of WO3, MXene and WO3/MXene Nanocomposite

Tungsten oxide (WO₃), MXene, and an WO₃/MXene nanocomposite were synthesized to study their photocatalytic and biological applications. Tungsten oxide was synthesized by an easy and cost-effective hydrothermal method, and its composite with MXene was prepared through the sonication method. The synthesized tungsten oxide, MXene, and its composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) for their structural, morphological, spectral, elemental and surface area analysis, respectively. The crystallite size of WO₃ calculated from XRD was ~10 nm, the particle size of WO₃ was 130 nm, and the average thickness of MXene layers was 175 nm, which was calculated from FESEM. The photocatalytic activity of as-synthesized samples was carried out for the degradation of methylene blue under solar radiation, MXene, the WO₃/MXene composite, and WO₃ exhibited 54%, 89%, and 99% photocatalytic degradation, respectively. WO₃ showed maximal degradation ability; by adding WO₃ to MXene, the degradation ability of MXene was enhanced. Studies on antibacterial activity demonstrated that these samples are good antibacterial agents against positive strains, and their antibacterial activity against negative strains depends upon their concentration. Against positive strains, the WO₃/MXene composite’s inhibition zone was at 7 mm, while it became 9 mm upon increasing the concentration. This study proves that WO₃, MXene, and the WO₃/MXene nanocomposite could be used in biological and environmental applications.

Development of Methanol Sensor Based on Sol-Gel Drop-Coating Co3O4·CdO·ZnO Nanoparticles Modified Gold-Coated µ-Chip by Electro-Oxidation Process

Herein, novel Co₃O₄·CdO·ZnO-based tri-metallic oxide nanoparticles (CCZ) were synthesized by a simple solution method in basic phase. We have used Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Tunneling Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) techniques to characterize the CCZ nanoparticles. XRD, TEM, DLS, and FESEM investigations have confirmed the tri-metallic nanoparticles’ structure, while XPS and EDS analyses have shown the elemental compositions of the CCZ nanoparticles. Later, a Au/μ-Chip was modified with the CCZ nanoparticles using a conducting binder, PEDOT: PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate) in a sol-gel system, and dried completely in air. Then, the CCZ/Au/μ-Chip sensor was used to detect methanol (MeOH) in phosphate buffer solution (PBS). Outstanding sensing performance was achieved for the CCZ/Au/μ-Chip sensor, such as excellent sensitivity (1.3842 µAµM⁻¹cm⁻²), a wide linear dynamic range of 1.0 nM–2.0 mM (R² = 0.9992), an ultra-low detection limit (32.8 ± 0.1 pM at S/N = 3), a fast response time (~11 s), and excellent reproducibility and repeatability. This CCZ/Au/μ-Chip sensor was further applied with appropriate quantification results in real environmental sample analyses.

Biocompatible chitin-encapsulated CdS quantum dots: Fabrication and antibacterial screening

Chitin-encapsulated cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS@CTN QDs) were successfully synthesized from chitin and Cd(NO₃)₂ precursor using the colloidal chemistry method, toward the development of biocompatible and biodegradable QDs for biomedical applications. CdS@CTN QDs exhibited the nanocrystalline cubic CdS encapsulated by α-chitin. The average particle size of CdS@CTN QDs was estimated using empirical Henglein model to be 3.9 nm, while their crystallite size was predicted using Scherrer equation to be 4.3 nm, slightly larger compared to 3-mercaptopropionic acid-capped CdS QDs (3.2 and 3.6 nm, respectively). The mechanism of formation was interpreted based on the spectroscopic data and X-ray crystal structures of CdS@CTN QDs fabricated at different pH values and mass ratios of chitin to Cd(NO₃)₂ precursor. As an important step to explore potential biomolecular and biological applications of CdS@CTN QDs, their antibacterial activities were tested against four different bacterial strains; i.e. Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtillus, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Biosynthesis and characterization of CdO nanostructure and its influence on cancer cells of (HT29)

Due to increased drug potency and lower toxicity in the nano-sized mediated drug delivery model, the environmentally sustainable synthesis of nanoparticles by the bio route from plant extracts has a wide variety of applications in novel science. In this report, our research groups have synthesized stable and cost-effective CdO nanostructure by the Curcuma plant. The biosynthesis of CdO nanostructure by the Curcuma plant extract was confirmed by different analytical methods such as UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Atomic force microscopy AFM and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), in addition to MTT assay screening of the synthesized CdO nanostructure for anticancer activity on (HT29). The result was that the biosynthesized CdO nanostructure exhibited strong anticancer cytotoxicity on (HT29). The findings of the MTT shows that at a concentration of 50.81 μ, 50 percent of the cancer cell line was destroyed by the extract.

Synthesis and characterization of microbial mediated cadmium oxide nanoparticles

Microbial mediated synthesis of metallic nanoparticles constitutes as effective and promising approach for the development of antibacterial materials in the field of bioengineering and biomedicine. We prepared Cadmium oxide nanoaprticles (CdO NPs) utilizing Penicillium oxalicum, and cadmium acetate solution via coprecipitate method. The elemental composition and morphology of these synthesized CdO NPs were examined through X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Furthermore, we evaluated the bactericidal potential of prepared CdO NPs using Escherichia coli (E.coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus), Bacillus cereus (B.cereus), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Dimethyl sulfoxide was used as negative control while erythromycin was used as positive control. The XRD spectrum revealed cubic crystalline nanoparticles with 22.94 nm size and UV showed absorbance peak at 297 nm with 2.5 eV band gap energy. FTIR depicted O─H and carboxylic groups along with CdO stretching vibration. EDS showed the presence of organic compounds on Cd and O over NPs surface. SEM results revealed the spherical shape of the CdO NPs. The synthesized NPs exhibited highly potent bactericidal activity against selected strains and demonstrated less optical density of 0.086 after 24 hr. Owing to the significant antibacterial activity of CdO NPs, the broad application prospects of these nanoparticles CdO NPs in extensive biomedical applications is indicated.

Nanostructured metal oxides and its hybrids for photocatalytic and biomedical applications

Metal oxide nanoparticles and its hybrids are deemed to be one of the most attractive materials in an extensive range of applications due to their impressive optical, electronic, photocatalytic, and biological properties. Metal oxide based nanomaterials with extraordinary characteristics have been proposed, prepared, and used as main materials in the recent area of photocatalysis and biomedicine, due to their non-toxic nature, large specific surface area, useful optical bandgap, and high biological activity. Herein, this review reveals the recent advance development in the area like photocatalytic, anticancer and antibacterial performance of metal oxide nanomaterials for multidimensional applications. Consequently, we also focused on the encountered difficulties and prospects for the future application of metal oxide-based composites as promising candidates for the development of highly efficient photocatalytic and biomedical systems. This review article also delivers advanced knowledge to the scientific community who intends to design efficient photocatalytic and biomedical systems.

Cockroach wings-promoted safe and greener synthesis of silver nanoparticles and their insecticidal activity

Simpler and biocompatible greener approaches for the assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) have been the focus lately which have minimum environmental damage and often entails the use of natural biomolecules to synthesize NPs. Such greener synthesis of nanoparticles has capitalized on the use of microbes, fungi, and plants using biological resources. In this study, Periplaneta americana (American cockroach) wings' extract (chitin-rich) is studied as a novel biomaterial for the first time to synthesize silver NPs (less than 50 nm); chitin is the second most abundant polymer after cellulose on earth. The physicochemical properties of these NPs were analyzed using UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The insecticidal effect of ensuing NPs was examined on the mortality of Aphis gossypii under laboratory conditions; 48 h after treatments of A. gossypii with silver NPs (100 μg/ml), the mortality rate in treated aphids was about 40% (an average), while an average percentage of losses in the control sample was about 10%. These results indicate the lethal effect of green-synthesized silver NPs on A. gossypii, in vitro. Antifungal and antibacterial activity of densely dispersed silver nanospheres with homogeneity size which synthesized using chicory: An in vitro study

With increase in isolation of multi and extensive drug resistance hospital pathogens (MDR, XDR) in burn centers of many hospitals in the world, attempt to use nanomaterials for treatment of burn-infected patients is the focus of researches all around the world. In the present investigation silver nanospheres (Ag NSs) has been synthesized by chicory seed exudates (CSE). The various parameters influencing the mechanism of Ag NSs synthesis including temperature, concentration, pH and time were studied. Greener Ag NSs were formed when the reaction conditions were altered with respect to pH, concentration of AgNO3 and incubation temperature. Finally, we evaluated antimicrobial activity of silver nanospheres biosynthesized by chicory (Cichodrium intybus) against most prevalent burn bacteria pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and fungus Fusarium solani. The UV visible spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) used for primary screening of physicochemical properties. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed the Ag NSs (with globular shape) with a size less than 25nm that they have the same size about 8nm (more than 97% are 8nm). Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Ag NSs against the standard strains of A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumonia showed a relatively high inhibitory and bactericidal activity (MIC 1.56μg/mL and MBC 3.12μg/mL) of the nanoparticles and F. solani cultures. In antifungal tests, the lowest level of zone of inhibition was observed at a concentration of 5μg/mL synthesized silver nanospheres with the 7% inhibition of growth. Ag NSs have high antimicrobial activity against three common burn bacteria pathogens and fungus F. solani. Therefore, Ag NSs can be used to prevent burn infection and for wound healing.

Fabrication of MgO nanostructures and its efficient photocatalytic, antibacterial and anticancer performance

Magnesium oxide (MgO) nanostructures were prepared using microwave-assisted (M 1) and hydrothermal (M 2) methods and characterized by XRD, SEM and FT-IR. It exhibits cubic structure with an average crystallite size of 20 nm (M 1) and 14 nm (M 2) and the lattice strain (WH plot) is 0.0017 (M 1), 0.0037 (M 2). It's spherical and rods like structures are confirmed through SEM and TEM. The vibrational stretching mode of MgO is 439 (M 1) and 449 cm^-1 (M 2). The optical bandgap is estimated as 5.93 eV (M 1) and 5.85 eV (M 2) through UV-Vis spectra. The fluorescence spectrum shows emission peaks at 414 and 437 (M 1) and 367 and 385 nm (M 2). The photodegradation studies of MgO nanostructures were assessed by monitoring the decolorization of methylene blue and Congo red dyes in aqueous solution under sunlight irradiation. The antibacterial activities of M 1 and M 2 are investigated against the gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhi, Proteus mirabilis, Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio cholera) and gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis and Rhodococcus rhodochrous) bacteria. The zone of inhibition of 24 (M 1) and 25 mm (M 2) indicates high antibacterial activity towards the gram negative bacterium A. hydrophila. Confocal laser scanning microscopic (CLSM) analysis was utilized for understanding the variation in antibacterial activity between different orientations of MgO nanostructures. The cytotoxicity assay confirmed that the prepared nanostructures are non - toxic to normal healthy RBC's. In-vitro anticancer efficiency (IC₅₀) of MgO nanostructures against human lung cancer cell line (A549) was investigated.
