Persicasulphide C, a new sulphur-containing derivative from Ferula persica

New Phenylpropanoids and Disulphides Dimers from Ferula Kuhistanica

Five undescribed compounds, including three phenylpropanoid derivatives, 4'-methoxycinnamyl isobutyrate (1), 4'-methoxycinnamyl-2"-methyl butyrate (2) and (2Z)-3',4'-dimethoxycinnamyl isovalerate (3) and two disulphides dimers, kuhistanicasulphide A (7) and kuhistanicasulphide B (8) together with five known ones, including three phenylpropanoids (4-6) and two disulphides (9-10), were isolated from the roots of Ferula kuhistanica Korovin. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, including IR, UV, HRESIMS, NMR and quantum 13C NMR DP4+ probability. Anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic (Hela, A549 and HT-29 cell lines) activities of the obtained compounds was tested, which compounds 4 and 5 demonstrated good anti-inflammatory with IC50 values of 25.41±2.30 μM and 31.70±3.82 μM, respectively.

Novel Cytotoxic Sesquiterpene Coumarin Ethers and Sulfur-Containing Compounds from the Roots of Ferula turcica

Six new sesquiterpene coumarin ethers, namely turcicanol A (1), turcicanol A acetate (2), turcicanol B (3), turcica ketone (4), 11'-dehydrokaratavicinol (5), and galbanaldehyde (6), and one new sulfur-containing compound, namely turcicasulphide (7), along with thirty-two known secondary metabolites were isolated from the root of the endemic species Ferula turcica Akalın, Miski, & Tuncay through a bioassay-guided isolation approach. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the literature. Cell growth inhibition of colon cancer cell lines (COLO205 and HCT116) and kidney cancer cell lines (UO31 and A498) was used to guide isolation. Seventeen of the compounds showed significant activity against the cell lines.

New Sulfoxide-Containing Derivatives from the Resin of Ferula sinkiangensis

Four undescribed sulfoxide-containing derivatives, sinkiangenoxides A and B, (2Z, 4E)-sinkiangenoxide C, and (2E, 4E)-sinkiangenoxide C (1:  - 4: ), and one known compound, 1-(methylthio)propyl (E)-1-propenyl disulfide (5: ), were isolated from the resin of Ferula sinkiangensis. Their structures were determined based on spectroscopic methods, including IR, UV, HRESIMS, NMR, and CD analysis. Compounds 2:  - 4: showed moderate cytotoxic activities against four human cancer cell lines with IC₅₀ values ranging from 15.0 to 40.3 µM. Sinkiangenoxide B (2: ) was shown to induce apoptosis in HepG2 cells. In addition, compound 5: effectively attenuated lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide release and TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10 expression.

Ferula hermonis: A Review of Current Use and Pharmacological Studies of its Sesquiterpene Ester Ferutinin

Ferula hermonis Boiss, is an endemic plant of Lebanon, locally known as "shilsh Elzallouh". It has been extensively used in the traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of sexual impotence. Crude extracts and isolated compounds of ferula hermonis contain phytoestrogenic substances having a wide spectrum of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological properties including anti-osteoporosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-fungal, anti-cancer and as sexual activity enhancer. The aim of this mini-review is to highlight the traditional and novel applications of this plant's extracts and its major sesquiterpene ester, ferutinin. The phytochemical constituents and the pharmacological uses of ferula hermonis crude extract and ferutinin specifically will be discussed.

Chemical constituents of Ferula seravschanica

Phytochemical investigation of Ferula seravschanica afforded seven new compounds, including three new bicyclic-type sesquiterpene coumarins (1-3), two new monocyclic-type sesquiterpene coumarins (16-17), two new phenylpropanoids (23-24) as well as twenty-two known compounds (4-15, 18-22, and 25-29). The structures of new compounds were determined by HRESIMS, NMR, ECD calculations, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. Furthermore, crude EtOAc extract and separated fractions (F1-F12) possessed cytotoxic activity against four human tumor cell lines (HT-29, DU145, HeLa, and Jurkat). Subsequently, we examined Jurkat inhibitory activity of isolated compounds. Compound 12 significantly inhibited the proliferation of the leukemia cells with IC₅₀ value of 2.50 μM.

Phytochemistry and pharmacology of Ferula persica Boiss.: A review

Ferula persica, is the well-known species of the genus Ferula in Iran and has two varieties: persica and latisecta. They have both been extensively used in traditional medicine for a wide range of ailments. A great number of chemical compounds including sesquiterpene coumarins and polysulfides have been isolated from this plant. Fresh plant materials, crude extracts and isolated components of F. persica have shown a wide spectrum of pharmacological properties including anti-pigmentation in Serratia marcescens, cytotoxic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-leishmanial, cancer chemopreventive, reversal of multi-drug resistance, anti-inflammatory and lipoxygenase inhibitory activity. The present review summarizes the data available regarding the chemical constituents and biological activities of F. persica.

Pharmacological and phytochemical appraisal of selected medicinal plants from jordan with claimed antidiabetic activities

Plant species have long been regarded as possessing the principal ingredients used in widely disseminated ethnomedical practices. Different surveys showed that medicinal plant species used by the inhabitants of Jordan for the traditional treatment of diabetes are inadequately screened for their therapeutic/preventive potential and phytochemical findings. In this review, traditional herbal medicine pursued indigenously with its methods of preparation and its active constituents are listed. Studies of random screening for selective antidiabetic bioactivity and plausible mechanisms of action of local species, domesticated greens, or wild plants are briefly discussed. Recommended future directives incurring the design and conduct of comprehensive trials are pointed out to validate the usefulness of these active plants or bioactive secondary metabolites either alone or in combination with existing conventional therapies.
