Abstract
Methanol is widely existed in fermented fruit wines (FFWs), and the concentration is excessive at times due to inappropriate fermentation conditions. Methanol is neurotoxic, and its metabolites of formaldehyde and formic acid can cause organic lesions and central respiratory system disorders. FFWs with unspecified methanol limits are often produced with reference to grape wine standards (250/400 mg/L). To clarify the causes of methanol production in FFWs and minimize the methanol content, this study summarizes the current process methods commonly applied for methanol reduction in FFWs and proposes novel potential controlling strategies from the perspective of raw materials (pectin, pectinase, and yeast), which are mainly the low esterification modification and removal of pectin, passivation of the pectinase activity, and the gene editing of yeast to target the secretion of pectinases and modulation of the glycine metabolic pathway. The modified raw materials combined with optimized fermentation processes will hopefully be able to improve the current situation of high methanol content in FFWs. Methanol detection technologies have been outlined and combined with machine learning that will potentially guide the production of low-methanol FFWs and the setting of methanol limits for specific FFW.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for the adsorption of minor molecular alcohols in the vapor phase. However, the drawbacks of powdered MOFs, including low recyclability and problematic separation, limit their application in fermented wine. Chitosan (CS) is a low-cost, eco-friendly, moldable matrix used in the food industry. In this study, a novel CS@ZIF-8 adsorbent with excellent microporous surface area was successfully synthesized by incorporating hydrophobic ZIF-8 into CS. The results showed that CS@ZIF-8 beads had a high adsorption affinity for methanol at a Zn2+/2-methylimidazole molar ratio of 1:5. The adsorption mechanism of methanol on CS@ZIF-8 beads was systematically studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, isotherms, and kinetics. The Langmuir model calculated the maximum adsorption of methanol to 56.8 mg/g. Adsorption kinetics are consistent with pseudo-second-order models. Furthermore, CS@ZIF-8 beads presented excellent recyclability for removing methanol for five consecutive cycles. It could treat 60 bed volumes of Chinese yellow wine in column filtration experiments to make the concentration below 50 mg/L. In summary, the highly efficient CS@ZIF-8 adsorbent has great potential for methanol adsorption from fermented wines. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Methanol will exhibit adverse symptoms such as weakness and headaches after it is ingested. Therefore, methanol control is an important safety factor in the production of fermented wine. The adsorption method is recognized as a widely used technique due to its high efficiency and selectivity. The CS@ZIF-8 adsorbent synthesized in this paper provides a new idea for methanol removal.

Abstract
Methanol-induced optic neuropathy (MION) represents a critical public health issue, particularly prevalent in lower socioeconomic populations and regions with restricted alcohol access. MION, characterized by irreversible visual impairment, arises from the toxic metabolization of methanol into formaldehyde and formic acid, leading to mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation inhibition, oxidative stress, and subsequent neurotoxicity. The pathogenesis involves axonal and glial cell degeneration within the optic nerve and potential retinal damage. Despite advancements in therapeutic interventions, a significant proportion of affected individuals endure persistent visual sequelae. The study comprehensively investigates the pathophysiology of MION, encompassing the absorption and metabolism of methanol, subsequent systemic effects, and ocular impacts. Histopathological changes, including alterations in retinal layers and proteins, Müller cell dysfunction, and visual symptoms, are meticulously examined to provide insights into the disease mechanism. Furthermore, preventive measures and public health perspectives are discussed to highlight the importance of awareness and intervention strategies. Therapeutic approaches, such as decontamination procedures, ethanol and fomepizole administration, hemodialysis, intravenous fluids, electrolyte balance management, nutritional therapy, corticosteroid therapy, and erythropoietin (EPO) treatment, are evaluated for their efficacy in managing MION. This comprehensive review underscores the need for increased awareness, improved diagnostic strategies, and more effective treatments to mitigate the impact of MION on global health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute methanol intoxication, whether unintentional or deliberate, necessitates prompt intervention to prevent severe morbidity and mortality. Homemade alcoholic beverages are a frequent source of such poisoning. This retrospective analysis examined two outbreaks of methanol intoxication in Saudi Arabia. It investigated the clinical presentation, implemented management strategies, and any lasting complications (sequelae) associated with these cases. The aim was to assess the potential impact of different treatment modalities and the timeliness of their initiation on patient outcomes. METHODS This was a retrospective case series of methanol poisoning cases which presented to the adult emergency department (ED) at King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. There were two separate outbreaks in the city, the first one was from September 1 to September 10, 2020 and the second one was from May 14 to May 20, 2021. Electronic charts were reviewed, and data were extracted to previously prepared data extraction sheets. RESULT From the 22 patients who arrived in the ED alive, the most common complaints were nausea or vomiting followed by altered level of consciousness. About 9% from the patient were hypotensive, 36% were tachycardic, 41% were tachypneic and 4% were having SpO2 < 94%. Brain CT was abnormal in 6 patients. Vision impairment was the most common sequalae of methanol poisoning (7 out of 12 patients who were assessed by ophthalmologist, 58%). When the patients were divided based on severity (mild, moderate, severe), nausea or vomiting and loss of consciousness were the most common complaints among the moderate group while loss of consciousness predominated in the severe group. Two patients presented with low blood pressure and were in the sever group. The severe group had a mean Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 8. Most of the patients in the severity groups underwent the same management apart from those who died or deposited. Eight patients in the severe group had to be intubated. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the multifaceted clinical presentation of methanol poisoning, culminating in a 17.4% mortality rate. Notably, our findings emphasize the critical role of prompt diagnosis and swift initiation of combined fomepizole therapy and hemodialysis in mitigating mortality and minimizing the potential for chronic visual sequelae associated with methanol poisoning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Methanol is a highly toxic, non-potable alcohol. Outbreaks of methanol toxicity occur due to its fraudulent addition to alcoholic beverages as a cheaper substitute for ethanol. Recently, alongside the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, rumors circulated on social media that consuming alcohol can prevent or cure the virus, leading to a COVID-19 and methanol-induced optic neuropathy (MON) syndemic.
AIM To investigate the impact of erythropoietin (EPO) on the outcomes of patients diagnosed with MON.
METHODS In this prospective study, 105 patients presenting with acute bilateral visual loss secondary to methanol intoxication were enrolled from March to May 2020 at Farabi Eye Hospital. A comprehensive ocular examination was conducted for all participants. Recombinant human EPO and methylprednisolone were administered intravenously to all patients for three consecutive days.
RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 39.9 years (± 12.6). Ninety-four patients were male and eleven were female. The mean pre-treatment best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improved from 2.0 ± 0.86 to 1.39 ± 0.69 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution post-treatment (P < 0.001), with significant improvement observed in all age categories and genders (P < 0.001). Visual acuity improvement was also significant regardless of whether the patient presented before or after 72 h (P < 0.001), and the post-treatment BCVA remained significant at all monthly follow-up visits (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION EPO and methylprednisolone therapy have been shown to be effective in improving visual outcomes in patients with MON when administrated within the first month of exposure. Public awareness efforts are necessary to prevent further outbreaks of methanol toxicity in the current COVID-19 era.

Abstract
Acute methanol poisoning is first and foremost life-threatening. Otherwise, functional prognosis is mainly based on ocular impairment. In this case series we aimed to describe the ocular manifestations after acute methanol poisoning during an outbreak in Tunisia. The data from 21 patients (41 eyes) were analysed. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination including visual fields, colour vision test and optical coherence tomography with evaluation of the retinal nerve fibre layer. Patients were classified into two groups. Group 1 included patients with visual symptoms and group 2 included patients with no visual symptoms. Ocular abnormalities were seen in 81.8% of patients with ocular symptoms. They included: optic neuropathy in 7 patients (63.6%); central retinal artery occlusion in 1 patient (9.1%); and central serous chorioretinopathy in 1 patient (9.1%). Mean blood methanol levels were significantly higher in patients without ocular symptoms (p = .03).

Abstract
The aims of this study were to determine the miRNAs involved in the methanol poisoning, and identify the male- and female-specific miRNA expression patterns in mice. Methanol was applied orally at the doses of 4 g/kg and 8 g/kg to induce mild and severe methanol poisoning in Balb/c mice. miRNA expression levels were detected at 3 different time periods (30, 60, and 180 min) following methanol exposure. miRNA expression profiles were determined using the high-throughput Fluidigm BioMark real-time PCR. We observed that serum miR-206 expression in male mice and miR-6357 expression in female mice could be an indicator of methanol poisoning. miR-9-3p downregulation and miR-1187 upregulation could be important for liver tissue. miR-3106-5p and miR-133a-5p upregulations and miR-122-3p downregulation could be poison biomarkers for ocular tissue in male mice. However, miR-194-5p downregulation could be a biomarker for ocular tissue in female mice. miR-122-5p and miR-124-3p downregulations and miR-499a-5p upregulation appeared to be important for kidney tissue in male mice. miR-543 and miR-6342 upregulations could be potential candidate biomarkers for kidney tissue in female mice. Our study is the first to report that differential miRNA expressions are involved in blood and tissues in male and female mice after methanol treatment.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore PINK1/Parkin's role in methanol metabolite formic acid-induced autophagy in PC12 cells and provide a theoretical basis for elucidating methanol-induced neurotoxicity. After treatment with different formic acid concentrations, we observed the morphology and mitochondria of PC12 cells. We used an ultra-micro enzyme kit to detect the mitochondrial Na+ -K+ -ATPase and Ca2+ -Mg2+ -ATPase activities; a JC-1 kit to detect changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP); MDC staining to detect the autophagy levels; and western blotting to measure the expression levels of the mitochondrial marker protein COX IV and the autophagy-related proteins Beclin1, P62 and LC3II/LC3I, and the mitochondrial and cytoplasmic levels of PINK1, Parkin and P-Parkin. Compared with the control group, the mitochondrial diameters, the mitochondrial Na+ -K+ -ATP and Ca2+ -Mg2+ -ATPase activities, the MMP, and the COX IV expression levels decreased significantly (P < 0.05). The fluorescence signal intensity (indicating autophagy); relative Beclin1 and LC3II/LC3I protein expression levels; and relative mitochondrial PINK1, Parkin and P-Parkin levels increased significantly, and the relative P62 protein expression levels and relative cytoplasmic PINK1, Parkin and P-Parkin levels decreased significantly (P < 0.05) compared with the control group. Thus, formic acid alters mitochondrial morphology, causes mitochondrial dysfunction, affects the PINK/Parkin pathway and, thus, activates the process of mitochondrial autophagy.

Abstract
Objective To describe a patient with hemi-retinal artery occlusion following methanol toxicity. Methods Observational case report. Results We report a case presented with an acute altitudinal visual field loss in the right eye following consumption of illicit alcoholic drink. In fundus photography, a well demarcated superior hemi-retinal whitening with foveal sparing was noted. Careful inspection of the optic nerve head in the right eye revealed that there was no main trunk of the central retinal artery anterior to the lamina cribrosa. Two separately emerging superior and inferior arterial trunks were noted. In fundus fluorescein angiography, earlier dye filling in the territory of the superior arterial trunk compared to the inferior arterial trunk was evident. Conclusion Hemi-central retinal occlusion may happen as an ocular consequence of methanol toxicity in patients with a proximal bifurcation of the central retinal artery.

Abstract
The commercial active dry yeast strains used for cider production in China are far behind the requirements of the cider industry development in recent decades. In this study, eight yeasts, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Pichia bruneiensis, and Pichia kudriavzevii, were screened and assessed by growth performance, methanol production, aroma analysis, and their transcriptive characterization. Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains WFC-SC-071 and WFC-SC-072 were identified as promising alternatives for cider production. Strains WFC-SC-071 and WFC-SC-072 showed an excellent growth capacity characterized by 91.6 and 88.8% sugar utilization, respectively. Methanol production by both strains was below 200 mg/L. Key aroma compounds imparting cider appreciably characteristic aroma increased in cider fermented by strains WFC-SC-071 and WFC-SC-072. RT-qPCR analysis suggested that most genes associated with growth capacity, carbohydrate uptake, and aroma production were upregulated in WFC-SC-071 and WFC-SC-072. Overall, two Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains are the optimal starters for cider production to enable the diversification of cider, satisfy the differences in consumer demand, and promote cider industry development.

Antimicrobial Activity of Some Plant Extracts and Their Applications in Homemade Tomato Paste and Pasteurized Cow Milk as Natural Preservatives. FERMENTATION-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Synthetic chemical preservatives are widely used in the food industry to delay the deterioration caused by microbial growth, enzyme activities and oxidation reactions. The last few decades have witnessed marked interest in finding natural food preservatives due to the potential health damage of synthetic preservatives; consumers have become skeptical of consuming foods containing these additives. Polyphenols used as natural preservatives that can be extracted from fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices provide the best alternative for partial or complete replacement of their synthetic analogues. The present study’s emphasis was on employing different plant extracts to be efficiently used as antimicrobial agents for developing replacements for the synthetic chemical additives in food products. The study also investigated the antimicrobial potentialities of five medicinal plants, widely used in Egypt (sumac, tamarind, rosemary, roselle and lemon) against six microbial markers (E. coli, P. aeruginosae, B. subtilis, S. aureus, Penicillium sp. and A. niger.). Sumac extracts showed the best activity against all tested microorganisms, producing the widest inhibition zones ranging from 14 to 45 mm, followed by tamarind and roselle extracts, with inhibition zones ranging from 8–36 and 8–34 mm, respectively. On the other hand, extracts of rosemary and lemon showed variable antimicrobial activity. All extracts from all tested plants were less active against fungal species than bacterial species. In all cases, the organic extracts (80% methanol, 80% ethanol) showed the same or greater activity than the aqueous extracts. In addition, the methanolic extracts showed the strongest and broadest spectrum. The most sensitive strain to plant extracts was B. subtilis, while the most resistant strain was P. aeruginosae. The MIC and MBC or MFC values of methanolic extracts were assayed using the broth dilution method. Sumac extract showed the best activity against all tested microorganisms with the lowest values of MIC and MBC or MFC (from 0.260 to 0.877 and 0.310 to 1.316 mg/mL, respectively, for bacteria, and from 1.975 to 2.5 and 2.5 to 4.444 mg/mL, respectively, for fungi). Interestingly, the tested extracts inhibited microbial growth in tomato paste and pasteurized cow milk for a long storage period (increase shelf life) as compared to the control samples. In conclusion, herbal and spice extracts could be successfully applied as natural antimicrobials for the elimination of food borne microbes and pathogen growth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Workers in fireworks production are mainly at risk for explosion injury. However, there are few reports on the consequences of methanol poisoning in fireworks laborers. CASE PRESENTATION We report on three patients with visual loss caused by inhalation exposure to high concentrations of methanol, who were engaged in the granulation process of the fireworks manufacturing industry. They presented with severe metabolic acidosis and visual impairments, accompanied by headache, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and vomiting. All were diagnosed with acute methanol poisoning. One patient developed bilateral blindness and two patients improved after timely hemodialysis treatment. CONCLUSIONS These case reports emphasize the risk of methanol poisoning in the fireworks industry or other factories using commercial alcohol with high methanol content. Early hemodialysis intervention and metabolic acidosis correction are crucial for rescuing visual impairment caused by methanol exposure. Awareness and supervision of commercial alcohol use are indispensable for similar industrial processes.

Abstract
Methanol is present at high concentrations in unrecorded fruit spirits, placing consumers of these beverages at risk of exposure at high levels. When assessing any health risk it is necessary to consider blood methanol levels (BMLs), reference dose (RfD), and maximum tolerable blood methanol level (MTBML). The aim of our study was to estimate daily methanol intake and related BMLs attributable to drinking unrecorded fruit spirits in the European population using a probabilistic Monte Carlo simulation. Data on the concentration of methanol in unrecorded fruit spirits in European Union member states were collected and the health risk posed by consumption of unrecorded fruit spirits was estimated. We found that drinking unrecorded fruit spirits containing methanol at a concentration higher than 8598.1 mg/litre of pure alcohol (p.a.) or 6382.1 mg/litre of p.a. and also at least 10 g ethanol can result in a methanol intake above the RfD by men and women, respectively. We confirmed that consumption of unrecorded fruit spirits containing methanol does not result in BMLs higher than the MTBML. Further studies are required to assess whether there is any health risk from chronic exposure to methanol above the RfD from unrecorded fruit spirits.

Abstract
Acute methanol poisoning is a global health concern. This study was designed to compare the prognostic roles of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and their combination in the prediction of clinical outcomes in methanol-intoxicated patients as well as to evaluate their associations with all initial patients' characteristics. We conducted a cross-sectional study among methanol-intoxicated patients. A total of 109 patients were enrolled in the study. Thirty-four (31%) patients died during hospital admission while 30 (27.5%) patients developed visual loss. Most of the unfavorable findings were evident in patients with high NLR and PLR. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and PLR can excellently differentiate between survivors and non-survivors with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.991 vs 0.923, respectively. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio showed an accepted discrimination ability to differentiate between patients who developed and patients who did not develop visual loss, AUC of 0.734, however, NLR showed no discrimination, AUC of 0.558. We concluded that NLR and PLR can serve as valuable tools in risk-stratifying patients and prognosticating outcomes in acute methanol poisoning. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio is superior to NLR as a predictive factor in patients with permanent visual impairment. However, a combination of NLR with PLR can develop a more powerful prediction for overall clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Rapid, accurate, and intuitive detection of unknown liquids is greatly important for various fields such as food and drink safety, management of chemical hazards, manufacturing process monitoring, and so on. Here, we demonstrate a highly responsive and selective transparency-switching medium for on-site, visual identification of various liquids. The light scattering–based sensing medium, which is designed to be composed of polymeric interphase voids and hollow nanoparticles, provides an extremely large transmittance window (>95%) with outstanding selectivity and versatility. This sensing medium features ternary transparency states (transparent, semitransparent, and opaque) when immersed in liquids depending on liquid-polymer interactions and diffusion kinetics. Several different types of these transparency-changing media can be configured into an arrayed platform to discriminate a wide variety of liquids and also quantify their mixing ratios. The outstanding versatility and user friendliness of the sensing platform allow the development of a practical tool for discrimination of diverse organic liquids.

Abstract
Our review article aimed for analysis of pathogenesis, diagnostyics and treatment of polyneuropathies manifesting in the course of COVID-19. The reasons for hyposmia and taste disturbances are considered in the subjects with this coronavirus infection as well as relationship between these clinical manifestations and severity of the viral infection. Special attention is given to description of autoimmune mechanisms of Guillain-Barré syndrome and polyneuropathies of critical conditions associated with COVID-19. Some data report about clinical deterioration of diabetic and alcoholic neuropathy during the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Inclusion of group B vitamins, together with C and D vitamins, is recommended to the schedules of combined treatment for polyneuropathies in these patients. Early diagnostics of polyneuropathies, especially, Guillain-Barré syndrome, is required during COVID-19 pandemics, thus helping to administer rational therapy and promoting better quality of life in the patients.

COVID-19 Among Patients With Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C: A Systematic Review. HEPATITIS MONTHLY 2021. Abstract
Context: Hepatic manifestations of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) are common among people living with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). Objectives: This systematic review aimed to summarize the evidence on COVID-19 patients living with HBV or HCV co-infections. Data Sources: We searched multiple electronic databases and preprint servers from December 1, 2019, to August 9, 2020. Study Selection: Studies were included if they reported quantitative empirical data on COVID-19 patients living with HBV or HCV co-infections. Data Extraction: Descriptive analyses were reported, and data were synthesized narratively. The quality assessment was completed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Results: Out of the 941 uniquely identified records, 27 studies were included. Of the eligible studies, 232 COVID-19 patients were living with HBV and 22 were living with HCV. Most patients were male, and the mean age was 49.8 and 62.8 years in patients living with HBV and HCV, respectively. Among the reported cases of SARS-CoV-2-HBV co-infection, the proportions of death were 4.7% and 15% in cross-sectional and case series/report studies, respectively. The death proportion was 8.3% among the reported cases of SARS-CoV-2-HCV co-infection. Among COVID-19 patients, 34.1% and 76.2% reported at least one comorbidity besides HBV and HCV infections, mainly hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The most common COVID-19-related symptoms in both HBV and HCV groups were fever, cough, dyspnea, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Conclusions: While understanding the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 requires further investigations, the careful assessment of hepatic manifestations and chronic infections, such as HBV and HCV upon the admission of COVID-19 patients could help reduce multimorbidity among HBV or HCV patients and lead to more favorable health outcomes among them.

This systematic review summarizes the evidence on the earliest patients with COVID-19-HIV co-infection. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, preprint databases, and Google Scholar from December 01, 2019, to June 1, 2020. From an initial 547 publications and 75 reports, 25 studies provided specific information on COVID-19 patients living with HIV. Studies described 252 patients, 80.9% were male, the mean age was 52.7 years, and 98% were on antiretroviral treatment (ART). Co-morbidities in addition to HIV and COVID-19 (multimorbidity) included hypertension (39.3%), obesity or hyperlipidemia (19.3%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (18.0%), and diabetes (17.2%). Two-thirds (66.5%) had mild to moderate symptoms, the most common being fever (74.0%) and cough (58.3%). Among patients who died, the majority (90.5%) were over 50 years old, male (85.7%), and had multimorbidity (64.3%). Our findings highlight the importance of identifying co-infections, addressing co-morbidities, and ensuring a secure supply of ART for PLHIV during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Spirits are alcoholic beverages commonly consumed in European countries. Their raw materials are diverse and include fruits, cereals, honey, sugar cane, or grape pomace. The main aim of this work is to present and discuss the source, quality control, and legal limits of methanol in spirits produced using fruit and honey spirits. The impact of the raw material, alcoholic fermentation, and the distillation process and aging process on the characteristics and quality of the final distilled beverage are discussed. In addition, a critical view of the legal aspects related to the volatile composition of these distillates, the origin and presence of methanol, and the techniques used for quantification are also described. The methanol levels found in the different types of spirits are those expected based on the specific raw materials of each and, almost in all studies, respect the legal limits.
