Abstract
Ferulago angulata is a medicinal herb from the Apiaceae family known for its antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and neuroprotective properties. This study aimed to assess the effects of F. angulata extract on neurobehavioral and biochemical parameters in scopolamine-induced amnesic rats. Fifty-six male Wistar rats were divided into seven groups and orally treated with F. angulata extract (100, 200, 400 mg/kg) and Rivastigmine (1.5 mg/kg) for 10 days. Starting on the sixth day of treatment, the Morris water maze behavioral study was conducted to evaluate cognitive function, with scopolamine administered 30 min before training. Biochemical assays, including monoamine oxidase and oxidative stress measures, were performed on hippocampal tissue. Results showed that extract treatment significantly attenuated scopolamine-induced memory impairment in a dose-dependent manner. Following scopolamine administration, malondialdehyde levels and monoamine oxidase A/B activity increased, while total thiol content and catalase activity decreased compared to the control group. Pretreatment with F. angulata extracts ameliorated the scopolamine-induced impairment in all factors. Toxicological evaluation of liver, lung, heart, and kidney tissues did not indicate any side effects at high doses. The total extract of F. angulata prevents scopolamine-induced learning and memory impairment through antioxidant mechanisms and inhibition of monoamine oxidase. These results suggest that F. angulata extract is effective in the scopolamine model and could be a promising agent for preventing dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
Misuse of synthetic pesticides and antimicrobials in agriculture and the food industry has resulted in food contamination, promoting resistant pests and pathogen strains and hazards for humanity and the environment. Therefore, ever-increasing concern about synthetic chemicals has stimulated interest in eco-friendly compounds. Ferulago angulata (Schltdl.) Boiss. and Ferula assa-foetida L., as medicinal species with restricted natural distribution and unknown biological potential, aimed at investigation of their essential oil (EO) biological properties, were subjected. Z-β-Ocimene and Z-1-Propenyl-sec-butyl disulfide molecules were identified as the major composition of the essential oil of the fruits of F. angulata and F. assa-foetida, respectively. In vitro antimicrobial activity and membrane destruction investigation by scanning electron microscopy imaging illustrated that F. angulata EO had potent antibacterial activity. Besides, the EOs of both plants exhibited significant anti-yeast activity against Candida albicans. In relation to insecticidal activity, both EOs indicated appropriate potential against Ephestia kuehniella; however, the F. assa-foetida EO had more toxicity on the studied pest. Among several insecticidal-related targets, acetylcholinesterase was identified as the main target of EO based on the molecular docking approach. Hence, in line with in vitro results, in silico evaluation determined that F. assa-foetida has a higher potential for inhibiting acetylcholinesterase and, consequently, better insecticide properties. Overall, in addition to the antioxidant properties of both EO, F. angulata EO could serve as an effective prevention against microbial spoilage and foodborne pathogens, and F. assa-foetida EO holds promise as a multi-purpose and natural biocide for yeast contamination and pest management particularly against E. kuehniella.

Abstract
The demand is improved for ready-to-eat meals by lifestyle changes and fermented sausages are popular meat products because of their flavor. Natural compositions are considered as substitutes of synthetic preservatives in products, which have been extensively employed. The aim of present research is to investigate the impact of Ferulago Angulata Essential Oil (FAEO) as an antimicrobial and antioxidant factor for preserving of dry fermented sausages throughout storage. Initially, FAEO was extracted using microwave assisted hydrodistillation and its components were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Fermented sausages were treated by starter culture (Biobak K) and FAEO at various concentrations (0, 400, 800 and 1000 ppm). Afterwards, tests such as pH, moisture, thiobarbituric acid, texture, microbial growth, electron microscope images, and sensory evaluation were conducted during storage (28 d). The high levels of bioactive compositions such as limonene (30.71%) and α-pinene (19.02%) were indicated in FAEO. The results illustrated that pH and moisture of all fermented sausages were within the standard range during storage. At different concentrations, FAEO significantly decreased thiobarbituric acid of treated samples compared to control (p<0.05). Furthermore, FAEO was able to improve cohesiveness and elasticity of fermented sausages, which were also visible in electron microscope images. Antimicrobial feature of FAEO was distinguished by evaluating microbial attributes (total viable count, lactic acid bacteria and yeast) in fermented sausages. Ultimately, FAEO at 800 ppm concentration was detected as a promising and appropriate natural preservative during storage in fermented sausages.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of sodium alginate (ALG) coating incorporated with Ferulago angulata (Schlecht.) Boiss essential oil (FAEO, 10 and 20 mg/mL), nisin (N, 500 and 1000 IU/mL), and NaCl (2 %) on microbial (lactic acid bacteria, LAB; total viable bacteria, TVC; psychrotrophic bacteria; Pseudomonas; Enterobacteriaceae, and yeast and mold), chemical (pH, PV, TVB-N, and TBARS), sensory (color, odor, texture, and overall acceptance), and antioxidant properties of refrigerated (4 °C) chicken breasts. GC-MS analysis revealed that trans-β-ocimene (45.36 %) and α-pinene (18.01 %) constituted most of the components in FAEO. The antioxidant properties of FAEO were evaluated via the DPPH method. The IC50 value of FAEO was 562 mg/mL. The results of antimicrobial evaluations indicated that there was no significant difference between control and ALG treatments (p > 0.05). The highest antimicrobial effect was associated with ALG + FAEO2 + N2 + NaCl treatment. The logarithmic reduction of the TVC, psychrotrophic count, Pseudomonas count, Enterobacteriaceae, LAB, as well as yeast and mold count in the ALG + FAEO2 + N2 + NaCl treatment were 1.40, 0.92, 1.20, 1.02, 0.88, and 1 log CFU/g, respectively compared to the control treatment. The initial level of TVB-N in the control treatment was 8.26 mg/100 g, which reached 42.84 mg/100 g at the end of the storage period. In ALG+ FAEO2 + N2 + NaCl treatment, the lowest TVB-N was observed, being 36.37 mg/100 g at the end of the storage period. The initial level of PV in the control treatment was 0.14 meq/kg, which reached 3.04 meq/kg at the end of the storage period. In the treatments containing FAEO, PV was lower than in other treatments, indicating the antioxidant properties of FAEO. There was a significant difference between control and other treatments in pH and TBARS evaluation (p < 0.05). The samples treated with FAEO had a lower pH than control. At the end of the storage period, the TBARS level in the control treatment reached 1.20 mg MDA/kg, while in the treatment of ALG+ FAEO2 + N2 + NaCl treatment, its level was 0.36 mg MDA/kg. The results of sensory properties indicated that in evaluating the color, odor, texture, and overall acceptance on the final days, treatments containing FAEO, nisin, and NaCl had higher scores due to their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In conclusion, this study indicated that adding FAEO, nisin, and NaCl to ALG coating would enhance the shelf-life of chicken meat.

Abstract
Abstract
Chavil (Ferulago angulata) extract (CE) and microencapsulated chavil extract (MCE) were added to UF- Feta-type Cheese. The aim of this study was to comprising CE and MCE on physicochemical and microbiological properties in cheese. The scanning electron microscope images demonstrate the MCE had elliptical shape. The average size diameter curve of the MCE revealed bimodal distribution with two peaks (1541 and 2222 nm) separately. The hardness value of MCE cheese (212.83 ± 17.63 g) was lower than that of CE (343.67 ± 25.53 g) because of canola oil used in the microencapsulation process. The MCE-cheese showed lower values of acidity (1.67%) in comparison with CE-cheese (1.87%). The viable numbers of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactococcus lactis were equal among the samples (4.6–4.9 log10 CFU/g respectively). The acid degree value of MCE (2.07 ± 0.21%) and CE (1.83 ± 0.25%) cheese were nearly equal at the end of storage time.

Abstract
In the present study, the phytochemical features of the essential oils from leaves, flowers, and fruits in three Ferulago species including F. angulata, F. carduchorum, and F. contracta was investigated. The essential oils were extracted using the hydrodistillation method and analyzed by GC-FID and GC/MS. The essential oil content varied between 0.46 to 2.65 % (v/w) among the various parts of the studied species. Monoterpene hydrocarbons (leaves: 34.80-78.76 %, flowers: 88.67-94.26 %, fruits: 89.54-94.21 %) constituted the main fraction of three Ferulago species. The major compounds of the essential oil among the species were α-pinene (15.01-22.16 %), β-phellandrene (2.48-14.73 %), α-phellandrene (0.52-13.8 %), and germacrene B (0.11-13.28 %) in leaves; (Z)-β-ocimene (38.46-47.21 %), α-pinene (10.25-18.32 %), and α-phellandrene (5.07-9.44 %) in flowers; (Z)-β-ocimene (10.21-41.19 %), α-phellandrene (7.51-31.89 %), α-pinene (8.96-17.71 %), β-phellandrene (7.24-17.44 %), terpinolene (2.90-7.77 %), and δ-3-carene (1.57-7.66 %) in fruits. The classical antioxidant activity of the essential oils was assessed using the DPPH method. The fruit essential oils of the studied species induced a significant level of antioxidant activity compared to ascorbic acid (EC50 =50.24 μg/mL). The highest level of antioxidant activity was found in F. carduchorum (EC50 =68.75 μg/mL) fruits essential oil. Ferulago species, therefore, have the potential to be utilized as natural antioxidants in the pharmaceutical, food or cosmetic industries owing to their high level of antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Background Two experiments were conducted to compare the growth-promoting (experiment 1), protective, and immunostimulatory effects (experiment 2) of salinomycin, probiotic, a vitamin-selenium complex, and Ferulago angulata hydroalcoholic extract (FAE) against coccidiosis in broilers. In each experiment, 350 1-day-old broiler chickens were equally divided in 7 groups: uninfected negative control (NC); infected positive control (PC); or PC supplemented with salinomycin (Sal); probiotic (Pro); a combination of vitamin E, vitamin C, and selenium (ECSe); 200 mg/kg of FAE (FAE200); or 400 mg/kg of FAE (FAE400). All these groups (except NC) were challenged via oral gavage with oocysts of mixed Eimeria spp. on d 10 (experiment 1) or d 14 (experiment 2). Results In the first trial, all treatments improved growth and feed conversion compared with the PC group, where the best values were noticed in the NC and FAE400 groups throughout the entire experimental period (d 1 to 42). Further, a lower mortality rate (P < 0.05) was observed in the NC, Sal, and FAE400 groups as compared to that in the PC group. In the second trial, intestinal lesion scores and total oocyst numbers were reduced in the Sal, Pro, and FAE400 groups compared to the PC group, albeit all coccidiosis-challenged groups had higher oocyst shedding (P < 0.05) compared to NC group. Immune responses revealed that among challenged birds, those fed diets Pro, ECSE, and FAE400 had significantly higher primary total and secondary total and IgG antibody titers against sheep red blood cells, serum and cecum specific IgG levels, and serum IFN-γ concentration than the PC group. Conclusions Considering the results, dietary FAE, especially at high levels of inclusion in broiler diet (400 mg/kg), could beneficially influence growth performance and immune status under coccidiosis challenge, which was comparable to that of probiotic supplement.

Abstract
A novel bio-nanocomposite was developed by incorporating the extracted nanochitosan from shrimp wastes with Schiff base cobalt complex (Chit-Co complex). The phytosynthesis of Chit-Co complex/Ag bio-nanocomposite was designed utilizing Chit-Co complex at the presence of Ferulago angulate extraction and characterized by AFM, SEM, EDAX, TEM, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. The radioprotective application of this bio-nanocomposite on human lymphocyte cells was evaluated using micronucleus (MN) assay. Total antioxidant activities of it were evaluated using FRAP and DPPH assays. Chit-Co complex/Ag bio-nanocomposite significantly decreased the frequency of micronuclei in human lymphocytes exposed to ionization irradiation (IR). The highest protection was observed at 200 μg/ml. Also, maximum antioxidant activities of bio-nanocomposite were provided at the same dose. These data exhibit the radioprotective effect of a bio-nanocomposite based on wastes of living organisms can be an excellent radioprotective agent, which can protect the normal cells of human against the genetic damage by IR.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The genus Ferulago, belonging to the Apiaceae family, is found mainly in the Mediterranean area, Southwest and Middle Asia, the Caucasus and North Africa. Since ancient times, species of this genus have been largely employed in traditional medicine for their biological properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, insecticidal, and anti-malaria, cholinesterase inhibition effects, etc. AIMS: The scope of this paper is to present a comprehensive respect review of this interesting genus including traditional uses, chemical composition of volatile and non-volatile metabolites, and in vitro and in vivo biological properties either utilizing the crude extracts or essential oils, or the single isolated compounds. Furthermore, critical considerations of the published data have been highlighted by comparing them with the results obtained from species of other genus belonging to the Apiaceae family. MATERIALS AND METHODS The available information on these genera was collected from scientific databases and cover from 1967 up to 2020. The following electronic databases were used: PubMed, SciFinder, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar. The search terms used for this review included Ferulago, all the botanical names of the species, both accepted names or synonyms, essential oils, volatile components, traditional uses, activity, pharmacology, and toxicity. No limitations were set for languages. A total of 230 articles were included in the present review. RESULTS Researches performed on either crude extracts, solvent fractions or isolated pure compounds from species of genus Ferulago showed several biological properties such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antidiabetic, enzymatic, cytotoxic, anticancer, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, antileishmanial, antimalarial, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, etc. Activities. Phytochemical investigations of Ferulago species have revealed that coumarins are the main constituents of the genera. A large number of flavonoids, terpenoids and other metabolites were also identified. Furthermore, a complete review on the essential oil composition of all the taxa studied so far has been also included. CONCLUSION In the present study, we have provided scientific information and research developments on traditional uses, phytochemical profiles, biological activities and industrial practices on the Ferulago genus. The commercial use and the applications in agri-food sector of some of these species have been also considered. In fact, the various extracts and essential oils have been used as antioxidants and/or as antimicrobial agents, for the stabilization of sunflower and soybean oil, for food packagings, as antioxidants of mayonnaise and yogurt during their storage and, also, as economically valid source for obtaining single compounds, more expensive at a synthetic level.

Abstract
Leukemia is a leukocyte cancer that is characterized by anarchic growth of immature immune cells in the bone marrow, blood and spleen. There are many forms of leukemia, and the best course of therapy and the chance of a patient’s survival depend on the type of leukemic disease. Different forms of drugs have been used to treat leukemia. Due to the adverse effects associated with such therapies and drug resistance, the search for safer and more effective drugs remains one of the most challenging areas of research. Thus, new therapeutic approaches are important to improving outcomes. Almost half of the drugs utilized nowadays in treating cancer are from natural products and their derivatives. Medicinal plants have proven to be an effective natural source of anti-leukemic drugs. The cytotoxicity and the mechanisms underlying the toxicity of these plants to leukemic cells and their isolated compounds were investigated. Effort has been made throughout this comprehensive review to highlight the recent developments and milestones achieved in leukemia therapies using plant-derived compounds and the crude extracts from various medicinal plants. Furthermore, the mechanisms of action of these plants are discussed.

Abstract
Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract by potentially pathogenic bacteria and their shedding in animal feces is a fundamental factor for both animal health and human food safety. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of salinomycin (Sal), direct-fed microbial (DFM), and Ferulago angulata hydroalcoholic extract (FAE) against Campylobacter jejuni in broiler chickens in a 6-week pilot-scale study. A total of six hundred and seventy two 1-day-old broiler chickens were equally divided into 6 groups (each consisting of 8 replicates of 14 birds): negative control (NC; untreated and uninfected); positive control (PC; untreated, infected with C. jejuni); PC + Sal; PC + DFM; PC + 200 mg/kg of FAE (FAE200); or PC + 400 mg/kg of FAE (FAE400). All these groups (except NC) were challenged with C. jejuni on day 15. The results showed that all experimental treatments improved (P < 0.05) average daily gain compared with the PC group, and the best value was observed in the NC and FAE400 groups throughout the entire experimental period (day 1-42). The overall feed conversion ratio and mortality rate, as well as the population of C. jejuni (day 24 and 42) and Coliforms (day 42) in the ileum and cecum, were higher (P < 0.05) in broiler chickens fed with the PC diet than for chickens in the other groups, except those in the FAE200 group. Immune responses revealed that among challenged birds, those that were fed diets DFM and FAE400 had significantly higher IgG (day 24 and 42), IgA (day 24), IL-6 (day 24), and gamma interferon (day 24 and 42) concentrations than the PC group. In conclusion, dietary FAE, especially at a high level of inclusion in broiler diet (400 mg/kg), could beneficially influence the immune status, as well as improve growth performance and intestinal microflora under Campylobacter challenge, which was comparable to those of Sal and DFM supplements.

Abstract
The application of medicinal plants for combating various human ailments, as a
food fortificant and additive have been adapted from ancient routine custom. Currently,
developing countries use plants as a major source of primary health care. Besides, the emerging
drug resistant pathogenic microbes encourage the utilization of medicinal plants as
preeminent alternative sources of new bioactive substances. Extensive research findings
have been reported in the last three decades. But methods to investigate the phytoconstituent
and their biological effects are limited. This review contains brief explanations about the selection
of medicinal plants, procedure for obtaining the crude as well as essential oil extracts,
phytochemical screening, and in-vitro evaluation of antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, the
antimicrobial activity of medicinal plant extracts reported from their respective solvent
fractionated and non-fractionated in-vitro analysis has also been described in the present paper.
The bioactive substances from medicinal plant along with chemical structure and biological
effects are highlighted in the content.

Abstract
Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-dependent neurodegenerative disorder and major cause of mortality in the elderly. AD has a complex pathophysiology and needs new multi-targeted compounds to halt the disease progression through several mechanisms. Medicinal plants contain various compounds with heterogeneous pharmacological effects, therefore are a good source. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of total extracts of Sanguisorba minor and Ferulago angulata on beta-amyloid (Aβ)-induced toxicity in primary neural cell culture.Methods: Cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs) were cultured according to standard protocols. The cultured neurons were incubated with Aβ alone or in combination with different concentrations of extracts for 24 hours. Cell viability was measured by methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium (MTT) assay. In addition acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and oxidative stress markers were measured after incubation. Also, the effects of different concentrations of the extracts on AChE activity of the cultured neurons were investigated. For measuring the acute toxicity of the extract, LD50 was estimated by limit test.Results: Both extracts could protect CGNs against Aβ-induced cell death. Aβ-induced oxidative stress and increase of AChE activity were ameliorated by both extracts. S. minor extract dose-dependently reduced AChE activity in cultured CGNs. LD50 of both extracts was estimated above 2000 mg/kg and considered as safe.Conclusion: Both studied extracts protected CGNs against Aβ-induced toxicity by ameliorating oxidative stress mechanism. According to these results, these extracts are recommended for further investigation in AD treatment.
