Abstract
Sleep spindle differences in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to healthy adolescents is an ongoing debate. Results mostly indicate decreased sleep spindle activity in adolescents with MDD. Given that sleep spindles predominate NREM and that acutely delaying the sleep period via a "sleep delay challenge" (SDC) increases non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep duration, it may be possible to increase spindle density in adolescents with MDD, which may provide a therapeutic benefit to depression symptoms. Here, we examined the impact of a SDC on spindle density and depression symptomology in adolescents with MDD (n = 66) and healthy controls (n = 62) tested across three nights: adaptation, normal sleep, and a SDC night which delayed bedtime by three hours. The results showed that; (1) there was no difference in spindle density between groups on the normal sleep night, (2) following the SDC, both males and females with MDD had a decrease in the frequency of slow spindles, while only females with MDD had an increase in the frequency of fast spindles, (3) acute SDC reduced depression symptoms in both groups, and (4) light sleep on the normal sleep night and slow spindle frequency at SDC predicted an 8 % improvement in depression symptoms, regardless of sex or MDD diagnosis. Taken together, these results suggest that; (a) spindles may be a useful biological marker of depression symptomatology regardless of clinical MDD diagnosis, and (b) that acute SDC may help alleviate depression symptoms in adolescents with MDD.

Abstract
AIM Depression and anxiety are both common psychological outcomes triggered via trauma-related experience. The current study aimed to identify the prevalence of depression and anxiety among youth survivors, explore the heterogeneity patterns of depression and anxiety symptoms in the chronic phase, and integrate early available information to predict patterns. METHODS The study is a longitudinal study conducted at 2 weeks and 12 months after the Lushan earthquake. Finally, 1725 children and adolescents' survivors who accomplished both two-time stages assessments were included. The heterogeneous patterns of depression and anxiety symptoms assessed by latent profile analysis (LPA) were used to predict heterogeneity patterns of depression and anxiety symptoms by early attained variables. RESULTS A three-class solution characterized mild depression/mild anxiety (64.3%), moderate depression/moderate anxiety (25.9%), and high depression/high anxiety (9.8%) parallel patterns was the most suitable model in our research. Demographic characteristics, earthquake-related exposures, sleep, and somatic symptoms were variables that can be used to predict the parallel profiles. CONCLUSIONS Detection of heterogeneity patterns, especially for youth survivors at high risk, based on the self-reported measurement attained at the early stage, is feasible. Our study may promote operational strategies by enabling targeted intervention.

Abstract
Sleep problems are frequently associated with the principal diagnostic criteria for many mental disorders. Alterations in the sleep of depressive patients are of high clinical significance because continuous sleep problems raise the chance of relapse, recurrence, or suicide, as well as the need for augmenting medications. Most antidepressants have been proven to influence the sleep architecture. While some classes of antidepressants improve sleep, others may cause sleep impairment. The successful treatment of depressive disorder also requires an understanding of the effects of antidepressants on sleep. This article briefly reviews the physiology of sleep and the typical alterations in the sleep architecture in depressive patients and updates the different effects of the majority of antidepressants including novel drugs in clinical practice on sleep. The summary of the updated scientific findings of the relationship between depression and sleep disturbances could be clinically beneficial in choosing the best medication for depressive patients with concurrent sleep disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is highly prevalent among adolescents, and depressive symptoms rise rapidly during early adolescence. Depression is often accompanied by subjective sleep complaints and alterations in sleep neurophysiology. In this study, we examine whether depressive symptoms, measured on a continuum, are associated with subjective and objective (sleep architecture and neurophysiology) measures of sleep in early adolescence. METHODS High-density sleep EEG, actigraphy, and self-reported sleep were measured in 52 early adolescents (12.31 years; SD: 1.121; 25 female). Depressive symptoms were measured on a continuum using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The association between depressive symptoms and 2 weeks of actigraphy, self-reported sleep, sleep architecture, and sleep neurophysiology (slow wave activity and sigma power) was determined via multiple linear regression with factors age, sex, and pubertal status. RESULTS Despite no association between polysomnography measures of sleep quality and depressive symptoms, individuals with more depressive symptoms manifested worse actigraphically measured sleep. Less sleep spindle activity, as reflected in nonrapid eye movement sleep sigma power, was associated with more depressive symptoms over a large cluster encompassing temporal, parietal, and occipital regions. Furthermore, worse subjectively reported sleep quality was also associated with less sigma power over these same areas. Puberty, age, and sex did not impact this association. CONCLUSIONS Sleep spindles have been hypothesized to protect sleep against environmental disturbances. Thus, diminished spindle power may be a subtle sign of disrupted sleep and its association with depressive symptoms in early adolescence may signal vulnerability for depression.

Abstract
Zusammenfassung. Schlafprobleme und -störungen sind in Kindheit und Jugendalter weitverbreitet. Dieser Review beleuchtet den Zusammenhang zwischen Schlafproblemen und psychischen Störungen im Kindes- und Jugendalter. Schlafprobleme und -störungen gelten zum einen als Risikofaktoren für die Entwicklung psychischer Störungen, aber auch als Symptom und Auswirkung psychischer Störungen. Oft stehen Schlafverhalten und Psychopathologie in einer Wechselwirkung, sodass Schlafprobleme zur Intensität und Aufrechterhaltung psychischer Störungen beitragen. Dieser bidirektionale Zusammenhang ist sowohl in der frühen Kindheit als auch im Schulalter und bei Jugendlichen zu beobachten. Viele Studien konnten zeigen, dass es einen langfristigen Zusammenhang über die kindliche Entwicklung hinweg gibt. Sowohl Umweltfaktoren als auch genetische Faktoren scheinen bei der Entwicklung und Aufrechterhaltung dieses Zusammenhangs eine Rolle zu spielen. Diverse Forschungsergebnisse zeigen, dass die Behandlung von psychischen Störungen und die Behandlung von Schlafproblemen sich wechselseitig positiv beeinflussen. Daher ist die Berücksichtigung von Schlafproblemen in der Diagnostik und Behandlung, aber auch in der Prävention von psychischen Störungen dringend anzuraten.

Abstract
It is increasingly clear that seminal sleep-affective relationships begin to take root in childhood, yet studies exploring how nighttime sleep characteristics relate to daytime affective symptoms, both in clinical and healthy populations of children, are lacking. The current study sought to explore these relationships by investigating whether trait-like and/or daily reports of affective and somatic symptoms of children with generalized anxiety disorder and matched controls relate to sleep architecture. Sixty-six children (ages 7-11; 54.4% female; 56.1% Caucasian; 18.2% biracial; 6.1% African American; 3% Asian; 16.7% Hispanic) participated including 29 with primary generalized anxiety disorder (without comorbid depression) and 37 healthy controls matched on age and race/ethnicity. Participants underwent structured diagnostic assessments including child-report measures and subsequently reported on their negative affect and somatic symptoms over the course of 1 week. Children also completed 1 night of polysomnography. Among children with generalized anxiety disorder only, greater amounts of slow wave sleep corresponded with less negative affect, and greater amounts of rapid eye movement sleep was related to more somatic complaints across the week. Similarly, for trait-like measures, more rapid eye movement sleep and shorter latency to rapid eye movement sleep were related to greater depressive symptoms in the anxious group only. The current findings suggest that physiologic sleep characteristics may contribute in direct ways to the symptom profiles of clinically anxious children. The functional relevance of such findings (e.g., how specific sleep characteristics serve to either increase or reduce long-term risk) is a vital direction for future research.

Abstract
Investigating sleep in mental disorders has the potential to reveal both disorder-specific and transdiagnostic psychophysiological mechanisms. This meta-analysis aimed at determining the polysomnographic (PSG) characteristics of several mental disorders. Relevant studies were searched through standard strategies. Controlled PSG studies evaluating sleep in affective, anxiety, eating, pervasive developmental, borderline and antisocial personality disorders, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and schizophrenia were included. PSG variables of sleep continuity, depth, and architecture, as well as rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep were considered. Calculations were performed with the "Comprehensive Meta-Analysis" and "R" software. Using random effects modeling, for each disorder and each variable, a separate meta-analysis was conducted if at least 3 studies were available for calculation of effect sizes as standardized means (Hedges' g). Sources of variability, that is, sex, age, and mental disorders comorbidity, were evaluated in subgroup analyses. Sleep alterations were evidenced in all disorders, with the exception of ADHD and seasonal affective disorders. Sleep continuity problems were observed in most mental disorders. Sleep depth and REM pressure alterations were associated with affective, anxiety, autism and schizophrenia disorders. Comorbidity was associated with enhanced REM sleep pressure and more inhibition of sleep depth. No sleep parameter was exclusively altered in 1 condition; however, no 2 conditions shared the same PSG profile. Sleep continuity disturbances imply a transdiagnostic imbalance in the arousal system likely representing a basic dimension of mental health. Sleep depth and REM variables might play a key role in psychiatric comorbidity processes. Abstract
BACKGROUND Hippocrates flagged the value of sleep for good health. Nonetheless, historically, researchers with an interest in developmental psychopathology have largely ignored a possible role for atypical sleep. Recently, however, there has been a surge of interest in this area, perhaps reflecting increased evidence that disturbed or insufficient sleep can result in poor functioning in numerous domains. This review outlines what is known about sleep in the psychiatric diagnoses most relevant to children and for which associations with sleep are beginning to be understood. While based on a comprehensive survey of the literature, the focus of the current review is on the latest science (largely from 2010). There is a description of both concurrent and longitudinal links as well as possible mechanisms underlying associations. Preliminary treatment research is also considered which suggests that treating sleep difficulties may result in improvements in behavioural areas beyond sleep quality. FINDINGS To maximise progress in this field, there now needs to be: (a) greater attention to the assessment of sleep in children; (b) sleep research on a wider range of psychiatric disorders; (c) a greater focus on and examination of mechanisms underlying associations; (d) a clearer consideration of developmental questions and (e) large-scale well-designed treatment studies. CONCLUSIONS While sleep problems may sometimes be missed by parents and healthcare providers; hence constituting a hidden risk for other psychopathologies - knowing about these difficulties creates unique opportunities. The current excitement in this field from experts in diverse areas including developmental psychology, clinical psychology, genetics and neuropsychology should make these opportunities a reality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Undiagnosed major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with increased morbidity in children and adolescents. This study evaluated features of sleep macro- and microarchitecture assessed by polysomnography (PSG) as diagnostic markers for MDD in children and adolescents. METHODS MEDLINE, PSYCINFO, EMBASE and PUBMED were searched from their availability dates to March 1st, 2013. The literature search identified 932 abstracts of which 51 studies were retrieved and 28 were included in the analysis. Study design, features of sleep macro- and microarchitecture, demographic and clinical characteristics of study groups were extracted for each study. RESULTS There were modest differences on sleep macroarchitecture between children and adolescents with MDD and healthy controls. The most robust difference was found in sleep latency, 31% of adolescents with MDD had increased sleep latency. Age, suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, and psychiatric comorbidities were significant predictors of sleep macroarchitecture. Modest differences were found for sleep microarchitecture, intrahemispheric and interhemispheric temporal coherence was decreased in a third of patients with MDD. Age was a significant predictor of sleep microarchitecture. LIMITATIONS This meta-analysis is limited by the small number of studies on sleep macroarchitecture in children with MDD and studies on sleep microarchitecture overall and by the heterogeneity in methodology between studies. CONCLUSIONS This synthetic review of the existing literature is among the largest to quantitatively assess impaired sleep as a diagnostic marker for MDD in children and adolescents. Knowledge of sleep macro- and microarchitecture in early-onset MDD may aid the clinician in developing a treatment strategy for MDD-related sleep symptoms in a subset of patients.

Abstract
A reduction in the amount of time spent sleeping occurs chronically in modern society. Clinical and experimental studies in humans and animal models have shown that immune function is impaired when sleep loss is experienced. Sleep loss exerts a strong regulatory influence on peripheral levels of inflammatory mediators of the immune response. An increasing number of research projects support the existence of reciprocal regulation between sleep and low-intensity inflammatory response. Recent studies show that sleep deficient humans and rodents exhibit a proinflammatory component; therefore, sleep loss is considered as a risk factor for developing cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis). Circulating levels of proinflammatory mediators depend on the intensity and duration of the method employed to induce sleep loss. Recognizing the fact that the concentration of proinflammatory mediators is different between acute and chronic sleep-loss may expand the understanding of the relationship between sleep and the immune response. The aim of this review is to integrate data from recent published reports (2002-2013) on the effects of sleep loss on the immune response. This review may allow readers to have an integrated view of the mechanisms involved in central and peripheral deficits induced by sleep loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical psychiatry has always been limited by the lack of objective tests to substantiate diagnoses and a lack of specific treatments that target underlying pathophysiology. One area in which these twin failures has been most frustrating is major depression. Due to very considerable progress in the basic and clinical neurosciences of sleep-wake cycles and underlying circadian systems this situation is now rapidly changing. DISCUSSION The development of specific behavioral or pharmacological strategies that target these basic regulatory systems is driving renewed clinical interest. Here, we explore the extent to which objective tests of sleep-wake cycles and circadian function - namely, those that measure timing or synchrony of circadian-dependent physiology as well as daytime activity and nighttime sleep patterns - can be used to identify a sub-class of patients with major depression who have disturbed circadian profiles. SUMMARY Once this unique pathophysiology is characterized, a highly personalized treatment plan can be proposed and monitored. New treatments will now be designed and old treatments re-evaluated on the basis of their effects on objective measures of sleep-wake cycles, circadian rhythms and related metabolic systems.

Abstract
Sleep adaptation in an unfamiliar environment, the so-called "first-night effect", is known to occur in healthy individuals. To avoid the confounding effects of the "first-night effect", the first-night sleep data are not used in most of sleep studies. In the present study, we examined changes of sleep adaptation in hospitalized patients with depression. Polysomnographic recordings were obtained for two consecutive nights from 14 patients, and sleep parameters were compared between both nights. Total sleep time, sleep latency, awakening times, movement awakening time, sleep efficiency, sleep architecture, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep latency, REM intensity, REM density, REM time, REM cycles, and other indicators showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the first and second nights. To conclude, hospitalized patients with depression have relatively less change in sleep adaptation, thus, the data from their first night do not need to be discarded.

Abstract
Depressive illness beginning early in life can have serious developmental and functional consequences. Therefore, understanding its etiology and pathophysiology during this developmental stage is critical for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies. There is considerable evidence of sleep alterations in adult major depressive disorder. However, studies in children and adolescents have not found consistent changes in sleep architecture paralleling adult depression. This review article summarizes sleep polysomnography research in early-onset depression, highlighting the factors associated with variable findings across studies. In addition, potential avenues for future research will be suggested in order to develop more comprehensive theoretical models and interventions for pediatric depression.

Abstract
Links between sleep and psychopathology are complex and likely bidirectional. Sleep problems and alteration of normal sleep patterns have been identified in major forms of child psychopathology including anxiety, depression and attention disorders as well as symptoms of difficulties in the full range. This review summarizes some key findings with regard to the links between sleep and associated difficulties in childhood and adolescence. It then proposes a selection of possible mechanisms underlying some of these associations. Suggestions for future research include the need to 1) use multi-methods to assess sleep; 2) measure sleep in large-scale studies; 3) conduct controlled experiments to further establish the effects of sleep variations on emotional and behavioral difficulties; 4) take an interdisciplinary approach to further understand the links between sleep and associated difficulties.

Abstract
Sleep problems are an essential part of the current diagnostic criteria for depressive and bipolar disorders in children and adolescents. Whereas many studies have reported subjective sleep problems in youth with depression or bipolar disorder, except for reduced rapid eye movement latency associated with depression, few objective mood-related sleep abnormalities have been consistently identified. Recent technologic advances, such as spectral EEG and actigraphy, hold promise for revealing additional objective disturbances. There are presently few evidence-based published practice recommendations for mood-related sleep problems in youth. In this article, the authors chronologically review research on the phenomenology and treatment of sleep difficulties in youth with depressive and bipolar disorders and present research-based and clinically guided recommendations for the assessment and treatment of these problems.
