Structure-Function Relationships of Nanocarbon/Polymer Composites for Chemiresistive Sensing: A Review

Composites of organic compounds and inorganic nanomaterials provide novel sensing platforms for high-performance sensor applications. The combination of the attractive functionalities of nanomaterials with polymers as an organic matrix offers promising materials with tunable electrical, mechanical, and chemisensitive properties. This review mainly focuses on nanocarbon/polymer composites as chemiresistors. We first describe the structure and properties of carbon nanofillers as reinforcement agents used in the manufacture of polymer composites and the sensing mechanism of developed nanocomposites as chemiresistors. Then, the design and synthesizing methods of polymer composites based on carbon nanofillers are discussed. The electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, and the applications of different nanocarbon/polymer composites for the detection of different analytes are reviewed. Lastly, challenges and the future vision for applications of such nanocomposites are described.

Kinetic Modeling and Degradation Study of Liquid Polysulfide Resin-Clay Nanocomposite

Kinetic modeling and degradation study of liquid polysulfide (LPS)/clay nanocomposite is possible through Ozawa–Flynn–Wall (OFW) and Kissinger methods. Comparing the results of these models with experimental data leads to provide an accurate degradation kinetic evaluation of these materials. To this aim, the morphology and distribution of clay nanoparticles (CNPs) within the LPS matrix were investigated using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). To evaluate the interaction between the LPS and the CNPs, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) identification was utilized. Furthermore, to investigate the kinetics of degradation, the thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) of the samples were used in the nitrogen atmosphere with the help of Kissinger and Ozawa–Flynn–Wall (OFW) models. The characterization results confirmed the homogenous dispersion of the CNPs into the LPS matrix. In addition, the presence of CNPs increased the thermal stability and activation energy (E_a) of the samples at different conversion rates. Moreover, the OFW method was highly consistent with the experimental data and provided an appropriate fit for the degradation kinetics.

Convenient CNT-Paper Gas Sensors Prepared by a Household Inkjet Printer

A hydrosoluble light-sensitive polymer named PSAG (poly-styrenesulfonate acrylic acid glycidyl methacrylate) was synthesized by acrylic acid (AA), sodium 4-styrenesulfonate (SS), and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). PSAG is used to modify multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a length diameter between 0.004 and 0.016. An inkjet conductive ink was formed by well-dispersed MWCNTs in aqueous and organic solvents, which could adjust the surface tension and viscosity of the ink. Gas sensors were then fabricated using this conductive ink on a household inkjet printer. The sensors demonstrated good reproducibility and acceptable recovery time (<200 s) to ammonia, methanol, and acetone. The resistance of the inkjet-printed sensor electrodes remained stable in the process of bending the sensors to different angles because of ultraviolet curing.
