Current situation and publication trends of skeletal muscle related research: A bibliometric analysis

Skeletal muscle (SM) is a highly plastic and dynamic tissue of the body and is largely responsible for body maintenance. SM is primarily responsible for body balance, movement, postural support, thermogenesis, and blood glucose homeostasis. SM regeneration depends on the activation of muscle satellite (stem) cells (MSCs) under the regulation of several muscle regulatory factors that regulate myogenesis. Bibliometric analysis involves the quantitative and qualitative assessments of research and scientific progress that provides researchers access to recent publications, research directions, and thus generates ideas that can be implemented to guide future research. In this analysis, the Web of Science database was searched for articles using the search term "skeletal muscle AND myogenesis AND muscle satellite cell", and 1777 articles (original research/review articles) published from the year 1997 to June 2023 were retrieved. After applying several other exclusion and inclusion criteria, 129 articles were considered for analysis. Types of research, keywords, journals, authors, years, institutions, funding agencies, and average annual citations were analyzed. Muscle regeneration, satellite cell, and myogenesis were often used keywords and exhibited increasing trends in research articles over the decades. Some journals were found to strongly support research publications with high impact factors and citation scores. This study aimed to examine research ideas and growth in the skeletal muscle related field for atrophy and aging improvement.

The top 100 most cited articles on COVID-19 vaccine: a bibliometric analysis

This study aimed to uncover the current major topics regarding COVID-19 vaccine, and systematically evaluate the development trends for future research. The top 100 most cited original articles on COVID-19 vaccine from January 2020 to October 2022 were identified from Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace (v6.1.R3) was adopted for bibliometric analysis with statistical and visual analysis. The number of citations ranged from 206 to 5881, with a median of 349.5. The USA (n = 56), England (n = 33), and China (n = 16) ranked the top three countries/regions in terms of the number of publications. Harvard Medical School (centrality = 0.71), Boston Children's Hospital (centrality = 0.67), and Public Health England (centrality = 0.57) were the top three institutions leading the way on COVID-19 vaccine research. The New England of medicine journal dominated with 22 articles in the 32 high-quality journals. The three most frequent keywords were immunization (centrality = 0.25), influenza vaccination (centrality = 0.21), and coronavirus (centrality = 0.18). Cluster analysis of keywords showed that the top four categories were protection efficacy, vaccine hesitancy, spike protein, and second vaccine dose (Q value = 0.535, S value = 0.879). Cluster analysis of cited references showed that top eight largest categories were Cov-2 variant, clinical trial, large integrated health system, COV-2 rhesus macaque, mRNA vaccine, vaccination intent, phase II study, and Cov-2 omicron variant (Q value = 0.672, S value = 0.794). The research on COVID-19 vaccine is currently the hottest topic in academic community. At present, COVID-19 vaccines researches have focused on vaccine efficacy, vaccine hesitancy, and the efficacy of current vaccines on omicron variants. However, how to increase vaccine uptake, focus on mutations in the spike protein, evaluate of the efficacy of booster vaccine, and how effective new vaccines under pre- and clinical development against omicron will be spotlight in the future.

The application of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in pathogen diagnosis: a bibliometric analysis based on Web of Science

Background

Infectious disease is a large burden on public health globally. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has become popular as a new tool for pathogen diagnosis with numerous advantages compared to conventional methods. Recently, research on mNGS increases yearly. However, no bibliometric analysis has systematically presented the full spectrum of this research field. Therefore, we reviewed all the publications associated with this topic and performed this study to analyze the comprehensive status and future hotspots of mNGS for infectious disease diagnosis.

Methods

The literature was searched in the Web of Science Core Collection and screened without year or language restrictions, and the characteristics of the studies were also identified. The outcomes included publication years, study types, journals, countries, authorship, institutions, frontiers, and hotspots with trends. Statistical analysis and visualization were conducted using VOSviewer (version 1.6.16) and CiteSpace (version 6.1. R3).

Results

In total, 325 studies were included in the analysis after screening. Studies were published between 2009 and 2022 with a significantly increasing number from 1 to 118. Most of the studies were original articles and case reports. Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology and Clinical Infectious Disease were the most commonly cited and co-cited journals. Institutions and researchers from China contributed the most to this field, followed by those from the USA. The hotspots and frontiers of these studies are pneumonia, tuberculosis, and central nervous system infections.

Conclusion

This study determined that mNGS is a hot topic in the diagnosis of infectious diseases with development trends and provides insights into researchers, institutions, hotspots and frontiers in mNGS, which can offer references to related researchers and future research.

The 100 Most-Cited Articles in COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Based on Web of Science: A Bibliometric Analysis

Purpose

To perform a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most-cited articles (T100 articles) on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy to characterize current trends.

Methods

The data of the bibliometric analysis were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database on January 29, 2023, and the results were sorted in descending order by citations. Two researchers independently extracted the characteristics of the top 100 cited articles, including title, author, citations, publication year, institution, country, author keywords, Journal Cited Rank, and impact factor. Excel and VOSviewer were used to analyze the data.

Results

The T100 articles ranged from 79 to 1125 citations, with a mean of 208.75. The T100 articles were contributed by 29 countries worldwide, of which the USA ranked first with 28 articles and 5417 citations. The T100 articles were published in 61 journals; the top three citations were VACCINES, NATURE MEDICINE, and EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF EPIDEMIOLOGY, and the number of citations was 2690, 1712, and 1644, respectively. Professor Sallam, M(n=4) from Jordan, is the author who participated in the most published articles. Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (n=8) had the most T100 articles.

Conclusion

It is the first bibliometric analysis of the T100 articles in the field of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. We carefully analyzed and described the characteristics of these T100 articles, which provide ideas for further strengthening COVID-19 vaccination and fighting against the epidemic in the future.

Global Research Trend in Vaccine Design

The current study established a research mapping of the vaccine design using bibliometric indicators and network visualization. For an analysis of the result, the study retrieved a total of 5379 documents from Scopus from 1983 to 2021. The study used the VOS Viewer and the RStudio tools for data visualization. The findings revealed that there has been significant growth in literature on vaccine design in the last two decades; in the last ten years, the year with the most publications were 2020, with 477 publications, and the highest had a total of 14,145 citations. D.R. Burton was ranked as the most prolific author, with 86 publications and 18,449 total citations and was observed as the most frequently published author in the domain. The National Institute of Health (NIH) was the most productive organization in the domain, with 266 publications. The document entitled "Genome analysis of multiple pathogenic isolates of Streptococcus agalactiae" received a total of 1398 citations, and was the most cited document in the field of vaccine design. In network visualization, an analysis of the co-occurrence of keywords showed that "vaccine" and "vaccine design" occurred the most, which was 761 and 335 times, respectively. The study also observed that there were five clusters of author collaboration with a maximum of 18 authors and a minimum of two authors. The findings of the study will aid scholarly coalitions in the domains of medicine and health, information science and bibliometric professionals to carry out further research in the area of vaccine design.

The top 100 cited studies on bacterial persisters: A bibliometric analysis

Background: Bacterial persisters are thought to be responsible for the recalcitrance and relapse of persistent infections, and they also lead to antibiotic treatment failure in clinics. In recent years, researches on bacterial persisters have attracted worldwide attention and the number of related publications is increasing. The purpose of this study was to better understand research trends on bacterial persisters by identifying and bibliometrics analyzing the top 100 cited publications in this field.

Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection was utilized to retrieve the highly cited publications on bacterial persisters, and these publications were cross-matched with Google Scholar and Scopus. The top 100 cited publications were identified after reviewing the full texts. The main information of each publication was extracted and analyzed using Excel, SPSS, and VOSviewer.

Results: The top 100 cited papers on bacterial persisters were published between 1997 and 2019. The citation frequency of each publication ranged from 147 to 1815 for the Web of Science Core Collection, 153 to 1883 for Scopus, and 207 to 2,986 for Google Scholar. Among the top 100 cited list, there were 64 original articles, 35 review articles, and 1 editorial material. These papers were published in 51 journals, and the Journal of Bacteriology was the most productive journal with 8 papers. A total of 14 countries made contributions to the top 100 cited publications, and 64 publications were from the United States. 15 institutions have published two or more papers and nearly 87% of them were from the United States. Kim Lewis from Northeastern University was the most influential author with 18 publications. Furthermore, keywords co-occurrence suggested that the main topics on bacterial persisters were mechanisms of persister formation or re-growth. Finally, “Microbiology” was the most frequent category in this field.

Conclusion: This study identified and analyzed the top 100 cited publications related to bacterial persisters. The results provided a general overview of bacterial persisters and might help researchers to better understand the classic studies, historical developments, and new findings in this field, thus providing ideas for further research.

A bibliometric analysis of the 100 most-cited articles on curcumin

Background: Extensive studies related to curcumin were carried out over the preceding several decades. Citation frequencies represent the most prominent contributions in a specific field. This research aimed to identify and analyze the 100 most-cited articles on curcumin and to highlight the most important advances in this field.

Methods: Highly cited articles were identified in the Web of Science core collection database. “curcumin*” was used as the search string to retrieve in the “Title” field. VOSviewer was applied to perform bibliometric analysis of these papers.

Results: Totally 17,645 publications on the topic of curcumin were identified. The top most-cited 100 articles were published between 1973 and 2017. Most of these papers were original (n = 62). The total citation frequency in the top 100 article ranged from 355 to 3364, with a median of 560. The United States and India were the major countries researching curcumin. The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center was the institution with the highest contribution rate of these articles. The most frequently nominated authors were Aggarwal B. B., Kunnumakkara A. B., Prasad S., and Priyadarsini K. I. The top 100 articles were published in 68 journals. The top four journals in terms of the number of our included articles were Cancer Research (n = 7), followed by Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemical Pharmacology, and Cancer Letters, with 4 articles each. NF-kappa B, cancer, gene expression, apoptosis, inflammation, chemopreventive agent, and nitric oxide synthase are presumed to be the current hot topics. Bioavailability, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities were the major research directions of curcumin.

Conclusion: This study analyzed the 100 most-cited articles on curcumin and provided insights into the characteristics and research hotspots of the articles on this topic.

Global Research Mapping of Psycho-Oncology Between 1980 and 2021: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background and Aim

Psycho-oncology is a cross-disciplinary and collaborative sub-specialty of oncology that focuses on the psychological, behavioral, ethical, and social aspects of cancer in clinical settings. The aim of this bibliometric study was to analyze and characterize the research productivity and trends in psycho-oncology between 1980 and 2021.

Methodology

In May 2022, the Scopus^® database was searched for psycho-oncology-related publications using predetermined search keywords with specific restrictions. Lotka’s law was applied to check the authors’ productivity, while Bradford’s law was used to assess the core journals in this field. The data was analyzed for different bibliometric indicators in the Biblioshiny package, an RStudio tool for bibliometric analysis.

Results

The initial search resulted in a total of 2,906 publications. Of which, 1,832 publications were included in the final analysis, published between 1980 and 2021. The analyzed publications were written by 7,363 authors from 74 countries and published in 490 journals. There has been a significant increase in psycho-oncology-related publications after 2010. The most productive year was 2021 (n = 365). The annual scientific growth rate was found to be 13.9%. The most relevant leading author in terms of publications was Luigi Grassi from the University of Ferrara, Italy (n = 42). Lotka’s law found that the number of authors declined as the number of papers written increased. The core journals were Psycho-Oncology, Supportive Care in Cancer, and Journal of Psychosocial Oncology. The most frequently used author’s keywords other than searching keywords were cancer, oncology, quality of life, depression, and anxiety. Recent psycho-oncology-related topics included mental health, COVID-19 infection in humans, people, pandemic, and tumor. The University of Sydney was the top-ranked institution. The leading country in terms of publications, citations, corresponding author country, and international collaboration was the United States of America (United States). The United States had the strongest collaboration with Australia and Canada.

Conclusion

The research hotspots include mental health conditions and interventions in cancer patients. We identified international collaboration and research expenditure to be strongly associated with psycho-oncology research productivity. Researchers’ collaboration, which is visible among developed countries, should be extended to low-income countries in order to expand psycho-oncology-related research and understanding.

Bibliometric Analysis and Visualization Mapping of Anthrax Vaccine Publications from 1991 through 2021

Purpose: This study aims to analyze and characterize anthrax vaccine-related research, key developments, global research trends, and mapping of published scientific research articles during the last three decades (1991–2021). Methods: A bibliometric and visualized study was conducted. The Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC) was searched using relevant keywords (“Anthrax” OR “Anthrax bacterium” OR “Bacillus anthracis” OR “Bacteridium anthracis” OR “Bacillus cereus var. Anthracis” (Topic)) AND (“Vaccine” OR “Vaccines” OR “Immunization” OR “Immunisation” OR “Immunizations” OR “Immunisations” (Topic)) with specific restrictions. The data was analyzed and plotted by using different bibliometric software and tools (HistCiteTM software, version 12.3.17, Bibliometrix: An R-tool version 3.2.1, and VOSviewer software, version 1.6.17). Results: The initial search yielded 1750 documents. After screening the titles and abstracts of the published studies, a total of 1090 articles published from 1991 to 2021 were included in the final analysis. These articles were published in 334 journals and were authored by 4567 authors from 64 countries with a collaboration index of 4.32. The annual scientific production growth rate was found to be 9.68%. The analyzed articles were cited 31335 times. The most productive year was 2006 (n = 77, 7.06%), while the most cited year was 2007 (2561 citations). The leading authors and journals in anthrax research were Rakesh Bhatnagar from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India (n = 35, 3.21%), and Vaccine (n = 1830, 16.51%), while the most cited author and journal were Arthur M. Friedlander from the United States Department of Defense (n = 2762), and Vaccine (n = 5696), respectively. The most studied recent research trend topics were lethal, double-blind, epidemiology, B surface antigen, disease, and toxin. The United States of America (USA) was the most dominant country in terms of publications, citations, corresponding author country, and global collaboration in anthrax vaccine research. The USA had the strongest collaboration with the United Kingdom (UK), China, Canada, Germany, and France. Conclusion: This is the first bibliometric study that provides a comprehensive historical overview of scientific studies. From 2006 to 2008, more than 20% of the total articles were published; however, a decrease was observed since 2013 in anthrax vaccine research. The developed countries made significant contributions to anthrax vaccine-related research, especially the USA. Among the top 10 leading authors, six authors are from the USA. The majority of the top leading institutions are also from the USA. About 90% of the total studies were funded by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), USA.

Asymmetry in Psychoactive Research: A Bibliometric Study on 15 Psychoactive Drugs

Although intended to avoid illicit drug use, national laws and international conventions have limited research on psychoactive drugs. To characterise the evolution of the literature on psychoactive drugs, a bibliometric study of 15 psychoactive drugs from 1960 to 2018 was conducted in which 956,703 academic publications were obtained from Web of Science. Growth patterns were analysed per drug type, legal status and country. Our results show the existence of heterogeneous patterns of growth for the publications of different psychoactive drugs. Strikingly, the literature on legal substances and depressants represented between 60% and 80% throughout the years. We found unexpected regional differences in the scientific output about the selected drugs, which might be explained by cultural and political phenomena. Governments and funding bodies should consider these results when allocating resources to research on psychoactive drugs to optimise the therapeutic applications of these compounds and our understanding of the nervous system.

Current and Future Perspectives on the COVID-19 Vaccine: A Scientometric Review

This study attempted to draw the present and future perspective of the COVID-19 vaccine by identifying the most important scientists and their scientific contexts, trends of research topics, and relationships between different entities. Methods: To achieve this purpose, bibliometric and scientometric techniques were used to analyze 6288 scientific documents contributing to COVID-19 vaccines from the beginning of 2019 to 13 December 2021, indexed in the Web of Science. Results: The United States (US) had the greatest impact by publishing 2104 documents and receiving 32,958 citations. The US and the UK countries had the highest level of scientific collaborations with 192 collaborative studies. The University of Oxford and the Harvard Medical School were the most active institutions, and the University of Oxford and Emory University were the most influential institutions. Pollard AJ and Lambe T had the most publications and the highest citations and h-index. T Lambe, SC Gilbert, M Voysey, and AJ Pollard from the University of Oxford had the highest number of co-authorships. More than 19% of the research was conducted in the field of immunology. The Vaccines journal had the most publications, with 425 articles. The US Department of Health & Human Services granted the most research. In 2019, studies were focused on the topics of COVID-19 virus identification and ways to deal with it; in 2020, studies focused on the topics of COVID-19 and vaccines, whereas in 2021, they focused on the topics of COVID-19 vaccines and their effects, vaccines hesitancy, the role of healthcare workers in COVID-19, as well as discussions about these vaccines in the social media. Conclusions: Recognition of the most important actors (countries, institutes, researchers, and channels for the release of COVID-19 vaccine studies), research trends, and fields of study on the COVID-19 vaccine can be useful for researchers, countries, and policy makers in the field of science and health to make decisions and better understand these vaccines.

A Bibliometric Analysis of COVID-19 Vaccines and Sentiment Analysis

Recent statistical and social studies have shown that social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter contain valuable data that influence human behaviors. This data can be used to track, fight, and control the spread of the COVID-19 and are an excellent asset for analyzing and understanding people’s sentiments. Current levels of willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination are still insufficient to achieve immunity standards as stipulated by the World Health Organization (WHO). The present study employs bibliometric analysis to uncover trends and research into sentiment analysis and COVID-19 vaccination. A range of analyses is conducted using the open-source tool VOSviewer and Scopus database from 2020-2021 to acquire a deeper insight and evaluate current research trends on COVID-19 vaccines. The quantitative methodology used generates various bibliometric network visualizations and trends as a function of publication metrics such as citation, geographical attributes, journal publications, and research institutions. Results of network visualization revealed that understanding the the-state-of-the-art in applying sentiment analysis to the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial to local government health agencies and healthcare providers to help in neutralizing the infodemic and improve vaccine acceptance.

Analysis of the Research Hotspot of Drug Treatment of Tuberculosis: A Bibliometric Based on the Top 50 Cited Literatures

Objective

The objective of the current study was to analyze the research hotspot of drug treatment for tuberculosis via top literatures.

Materials and Methods

A retrospective analysis was performed on June 7th, 2021. Literatures were searched on the Web of Science Core Collection to identify the top 50 cited literatures related to drug treatment of tuberculosis. The characteristics of the literatures were identified. The outcomes included authorship, journal, study type, year of publication, and institution. Cooccurrence network analysis and visualization were conducted using the VOS viewer (Version 1.6.16; Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands).

Results

The top 50 cited literatures were cited 308 to 2689 times and were published between 1982 and 2014. The most studied drugs were the first-line drugs such as isoniazid and rifampicin (n = 22), and drug-resistant tuberculosis was most frequently reported (n = 16). They were published in 18 journals, and the New England Journal of Medicine published the most literatures (n = 18), followed by the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (n = 7), and the Lancet (n = 6). The authors were from 13 countries, and the authors from the USA published most of the literatures (n = 30), while authors from other countries published less than five literatures. The CDC in the USA (n = 4), the World Health Organization (WHO) (n = 3), and the American Philosophical Society (n = 3) were the leading institutions, and only two authors published at least two top-cited literatures as first authors.

Conclusions

This study provides insights into the development and most important literatures on drug therapy for tuberculosis and evidence for future research on tuberculosis treatment.

Trends of High-Impact Studies in Pharmacology and Pharmacy: A Cross-Sectional Study

Objective: To investigate the trends of high-impact studies in pharmacology and pharmacy research and to provide evidence for future research in the field of pharmacology and pharmacy.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed to understand the current status of high-impact studies (top 1%) in pharmacology and pharmacy research via InCites tool based on Web of Science Core Collection. VOSViewer software was used to visualize the results. The outcomes included development trends, countries, subject areas, research institutes, collaborative networks, and subject terms.

Results: We found 4,273 high-impact (top 1%) studies between 2011 and 2020 in the field of pharmacology and pharmacy. The number of studies increased from 366 in 2011 to 510 in 2020. These studies were mainly distributed in the following Web of Science subject categories: pharmacology and pharmacy (n = 4,188); neurosciences (n = 397); chemistry, multidisciplinary (n = 359); chemistry, medicinal (n = 314); microbiology (n = 301); biotechnology and applied microbiology (n = 280). These studies were cited in 646,855 studies from more than 100 Web of Science subject categories, and studies in pharmacology pharmacy accounted for the largest share of these citations. The top three countries that contributed the highest number of studies were the United States, United Kingdom, and China. The top three institutions that contributed the highest number of studies in the United States were the University of California System, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Harvard University. The top research collaborative circle was from universities in the United States. The top international collaborative circle was from universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and China. The subject-term analysis indicated that cancer was still the top disease, NF-κB was the top signaling pathway, and drug-delivery and nanoparticles were the top methods.

Conclusion: The high-impact studies in pharmacology and pharmacy research have grown over time. The United States, the United Kingdom, and China are the top countries that contributed the high-impact studies. Cancer is still the greatest challenge in the field of disease treatment. It calls for more international collaboration in pharmacology and pharmacy research, which will help discover novel drugs.

Characteristics of Publications on Occupational Stress: Contributions and Trends

This study aimed to analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the publications on occupational stress and highlight key research topics and future trends. The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched to collect publications on occupational stress, from inception to December 9, 2020. Two authors independently screened eligible literature and extracted the data. Bibliometric analyses were performed using VOSviewer 1.6.6 and R 3.6.3 software. Overall, 6,564 publications on occupational stress were included. “Stress,” with a total link strength of 1,252, appeared as the most co-occurrence keyword, followed by “occupational stress,” “job stress,” and “job satisfaction.” All studies were published between 1956 and 2020. Among them, 6,176 (94.35%) papers were written in English, and 4,706 (70.25%) were original articles. The top three Web of Science categories were “public environmental occupational health” (n = 1,711), “psychology, applied” (n = 846), and “psychology, multidisciplinary” (n = 650). The 100 top-cited articles were mentioned a total of 36,145 times, with a median of 361, ranging from 174 to 5,574. The United States was the most productive country, with 1,780 publications. The main partners of the United States were England and China. Three themes of occupational stress research were identified: job satisfaction, burnout, and occupational stress-related health problems. This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of the trends and most influential contributions to the field of occupational stress, thus promoting ideas for future research.

Research trends in rabies vaccine in the last three decades: a bibliometric analysis of global perspective

INTRODUCTION

Rabies is an infectious zoonotic viral disease which mainly occurs in Africa and Asia. Dogs are predominantly responsible for rabies transmission contributing up to 99% of all human rabies cases. Rabies is a vaccine preventable disease in both animals and humans.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to quantify and characterize the scientific literature and identify the top most cited studies in rabies vaccine research (RVR) from 1991 to 2020.

METHODS

The data used in this study were downloaded from Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) database. Network visualization analysis was performed using VOSviewer software.

RESULTS

A total of 1,042 papers (article: n = 986, 94.6%, review: n = 56, 5.4%) were included in this study. These have been cited 17,390 times with an average citation per paper was 16.69 times. The most frequent publication year was 2019 (n = 75, 7.2%). More than 55% studies were published from the United State of America (USA) (n = 380, 36.5%), France (n = 128, 12.3%), and China (n = 97, 9.3%). The most studied Web of Science (WoS) category was immunology (n = 344, 33%). The most prolific author in RVR was Rupprecht CE (n = 55, 5.3%). 'Vaccine' was the leading journal (n = 218, 20.9%). Rabies was the most widely used keyword.

CONCLUSION

Abundant literature has been published on RVR in developed countries. This study might provide a reference to understand the current and future research trends in RVR. In developing countries research collaboration and co-operation among institutes and researchers needs to be strengthened with developed countries.

A global bibliometric analysis of research productivity on vaccine hesitancy from 1974 to 2019

Vaccine hesitancy is a phenomenon where individuals delay or refuse to take some or all vaccines. The objective of this study was to conduct a global bibliometric analysis of research productivity and identify country level indicators that could be associated with publications on vaccine hesitancy. We searched PubMed and Web of Science for publications from 1974 to 2019, and selected articles focused on behavioral and social aspects of vaccination. Data on country-level indicators were obtained from the World Bank. We used Spearman’s correlation and zero-inflated negative-binomial regression models to ascertain the association between country level indicators and the number of publications. We identified 4314 articles, with 1099 eligible for inclusion. The United States of America (461 publications, 41.9%), Canada (84 publications, 7.6%) and the United Kingdom (68 publications, 6.2%) had the highest number of publications. Although various country indicators had significant correlations with vaccine hesitancy publications, only gross domestic product (GDP) and gross national income (GNI) per capita were independent positive predictors of the number of publications. When the number of publications were standardized by GDP, the Gambia, Somalia and Malawi ranked highest in decreasing order. The United States, Canada and United Kingdom ranked highest (in that order) when standardized by current health expenditure. Overall, high-income countries were more productive in vaccine hesitancy research than low-and-middle-income countries. There is a need for more investment in research on vaccine hesitancy in low-and-middle-income countries.

Top 100 cited paramedicine papers: A bibliometric study

OBJECTIVE

Understanding the impact different journal articles have in any academic field is important - particularly in emerging professions. A bibliometric analysis like this does not yet exist for paramedicine, despite the rapid increase in its primary literature. The objective of the present study was to identify and analyse the 100 top-cited articles about paramedicine.

METHODS

We searched the Scopus database in August 2020 for studies relating to paramedicine. After screening titles and abstracts, we extracted the citation count, journal name, publication year, and country of origin. We manually assessed whether the study was clinical or not, noted the sex of the authors, the profession of first and last authors and the study design used.

RESULTS

The median citation count for the top 100 papers in paramedicine was 58 (interquartile range 46-84 citations). The articles were published across 48 different journals, with Resuscitation and Prehospital Emergency Care being the two most frequent. The top-cited paramedic papers originated from 16 different countries and were written predominantly by medical doctors. Three quarters (73%) of the studies had a clinical focus, and a quarter (26%) were randomised controlled trials.

CONCLUSIONS

The evolution of paramedicine towards professionalism is backed up by the growth of its own body of knowledge. This analysis of the 100 most cited studies in paramedicine is the first of its kind and highlights that paramedicine articles have a high citation count and are published across numerous journals, but with a relative lack of contribution from paramedic practitioners and female researchers.

The 100 Top-Cited Studies on Dyslexia Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background: Citation analysis is a type of quantitative and bibliometric analytic method designed to rank papers based on their citation counts. Over the last few decades, the research on dyslexia has made some progress which helps us to assess this disease, but a citation analysis on dyslexia that reflects these advances is lacking. Methods: A retrospective bibliometric analysis was performed using the Web of Science Core Collection database. The 100 top-cited studies on dyslexia were retrieved after reviewing abstracts or full-texts to May 20th, 2021. Data from the 100 top-cited studies were subsequently extracted and analyzed. Results: The 100 top-cited studies on dyslexia were cited between 245 to 1,456 times, with a median citation count of 345. These studies were published in 50 different journals, with the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America" having published the most (n = 10). The studies were published between 1973 and 2012 and the most prolific year in terms of number of publications was 2000. Eleven countries contributed to the 100 top-cited studies, and nearly 75% articles were either from the USA (n = 53) or United Kingdom (n = 21). Eighteen researchers published at least two different studies of the 100 top-cited list as the first author. Furthermore, 71 studies were published as an original research article, 28 studies were review articles, and one study was published as an editorial material. Finally, "Psychology" was the most frequent study category. Conclusions: This analysis provides a better understanding on dyslexia and may help doctors, researchers, and stakeholders to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of classic studies, new discoveries, and trends regarding this research field, thus promoting ideas for future investigation.

The Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria: A Bibliometric Survey of the one hundred most cited articles in the last 15 years

ABSTRACT Objective: Bibliometrics is a group of statistical and mathematical methods employed to measure and analyze the quantity and the quality of scientific articles, books, and other forms of publications. The objective of the present study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria (JBP) by listing its 100 most highly cited articles in the scientific literature and identifying their main characteristics in terms of authorship and research topics and design. Methods: The 100 top-cited references in the JBP were identified through a search with Google Scholar. The main author, last author, corresponding author, the total number of authors, gender of the authors, year of publication, research institution, geographic origin, language, and the research design and subject of each reference were recorded and analyzed. Results: A marked increase in the number of citations in the last 15 years, a relatively balanced distribution of publications among the Brazilian states and research centers, absence of gender bias among authors, and a varied range of published topics suggest a good current editorial performance by the JBP. Relative lack of systematic reviews and longitudinal studies, dearth of articles published in the English language, and modest participation of foreign authors were points requiring improvement. Conclusion: The present study suggests that a survey of the 100 most cited articles in the JBP can provide a historical overview of the progress of this journal, as well as highlight the main obstacles, constraints, and challenges faced by its editors and authors.

The 100 Top-Cited Studies on Neuropsychology: A Bibliometric Analysis

Objective

The present study aimed to identify and analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the 100 top-cited studies on neuropsychology.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database to collect studies on neuropsychology from inception to 31st December 2019. Two authors independently screened the literature and extracted the data. Statistical analyses were performed using R software.

Results

The 100 top-cited articles were cited a total of 166,123 times, ranging from 736 to 24,252 times per article. All of the studies were published from 1967 to 2014 in 47 journals. Neuropsychologia had the highest number of articles (n = 17), followed by Neurology (n = 8). The top three most productive countries were the USA (n = 60), England (n = 13), and Canada (n = 8). Eight authors contributed the same number of studies as the first author (n = 2) or corresponding author (n = 2). The most productive institute was the University of California (n = 9), followed by the University of Pennsylvania (n = 4). Of the 100 top-cited publications, 64 were original articles, and 36 were reviews. The top three Web of Science categories were clinical neurology (n = 28), behavioral sciences (n = 19), and psychiatry (n = 11).

Conclusion

This study provides insight into the impact of neuropsychology research and may help doctors, researchers, and stakeholders to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of trends and most influential contributions to the field, thus promoting ideas for future investigation.

Comparison of attention for malnutrition research on social media versus academia: Altmetric score analysis

OBJECTIVES

In this study, we aimed to provide bibliometric and Altmetric overviews and visualization and to evaluate the correlation between traditional bibliometric and Altmetric analyses in the field of malnutrition.

METHODS

Articles published in the past decade were identified by searching for the term "malnutrition" on the Web of Science indexing database and research platform. The top 50 cited articles were analyzed in terms of title, study type, topic of study, first author, publication year, citation number, keywords, organizations, average citations per year, journal H index, impact factor, and Altmetric attention score. Also, the top 50 Altmetric articles published in the past decade about malnutrition were provided on the website Altmetric.com.

RESULTS

Among the top 50 cited articles, the most common study type, topic of study, publication year, and keyword were, respectively, original scientific paper (n = 26), definition-diagnosis of malnutrition (n = 17), 2010 (n = 13), and malnutrition (n = 18). The article titled "Maternal and child undernutrition and overweight in low-income and middle-income countries" in Lancet had the highest citation number, and the article "Impacts of COVID-19 on childhood malnutrition and nutrition-related mortality" in Lancet had the highest Altmetric score.

CONCLUSIONS

Evaluating academic publications with an Altmeric analysis in addition to a traditional bibliometric analysis is beneficial because Altmetric attention scores can give information about what the population wants to know about malnutrition and allows us to develop appropriate policies.

A bibliometric analysis of sarcopenia: top 100 articles

PURPOSE

The aim of this study is to investigate the emergence and development of sarcopenia research and guide to most cited articles for researchers.

METHODS

Thomson Reuters' Web of Science database was used to search for all articles related to the term 'sarcopenia'. We also benefited from PubMed to find additional data about these articles. We analyzed the top 100 cited articles (T100) by topic, types of research methods, keywords, journal, author, year, institution, and average number of citations per year, as well. Correlations were also made between the total number of citations, the average number of citations per year (ACpY), impact factors, and the time period of publication.

RESULTS

The median number of citations for the most cited articles was 309 (range is from 213 to 4,082). The most investigated topics of sarcopenia were definition-diagnosis (n = 35), prognosis (n = 19), and treatment-recommendation (n = 11). The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) consensus definition published in 2010 had the highest total number of citations and ACpY. The most common types of research method, country, year, and keyword were epidemiological studies (n = 55), USA (n = 69), 2010 (n = 13), and sarcopenia (n = 39), respectively. No correlation exists between impact factor (IF) and number of citations or IF and ACpY.

CONCLUSION

Despite some flaws, this study identifies the most significant contributions to sarcopenia research and reveals many important scientific breakthroughs and landmarks that took place over the years.

Bibliometric analysis of global scientific literature on vaccine hesitancy in peer-reviewed journals (1990-2019)

BACKGROUND

Vaccine hesitancy is a growing threat to national and global health security. The current study was undertaken to provide insights into the global scientific literature on vaccine hesitancy in peer-reviewed journals.

METHOD

The current study was a descriptive bibliometric study. A validated search strategy on vaccine hesitancy was implemented using SciVerse Scopus. Bibliometric indicators such as (1) annual growth of publications, (2) key players, (3) research themes, (4) pathogens/diseases encountered, (5) top-cited documents, and (6) annual growth of publications stratified by world region and by age category were presented. The study period was from 1990 to 2019.

RESULTS

Search strategy found 2791 documents. The h-index of the retrieved literature was 89. The leading journal was Vaccine (369; 13.2%%) followed by Human Vaccines and Immunotherapeutics (129; 4.6%). Authors from the USA led with 1125 (40.3%) followed by authors from Italy (234; 8.4%) and the UK (204; 7.3%). The US CDC led with 140 (5.0%) documents followed by Emory University (USA) (81, 2.9%). The list of active authors included six from the USA while the remaining were from France, Australia, and Canada. Research themes in the retrieved literature focused on influenza, human papillomavirus, and the role of parents in immunization of their children. The region of the Americas and the European region had the greatest share of publications and showed steep growth of publications lately. Vaccine hesitancy research on adolescents was most noticed after 2007 while that on children was present all the time but escalated lately. Titles/abstracts analysis indicated that 621(22.3%) documents focused on influenza, 392 (14.0%) focused on Human papillomavirus, and 292 (10.5%) focused on measles. The top-cited documents in literature published after 2015 focused on the definition and strategies to overcome vaccine hesitancy.

CONCLUSION

The last decade witnessed a noticeable increase in the number of publications. Influenza vaccine and parental concerns about the human papillomavirus vaccine were the main focus of the retrieved literature. Information on vaccine hesitancy needs to be collected from all countries to build a better coalition against the anti-vaccination groups. Re-building trust in vaccines requires targeting parents by providing adequate information on the vaccines.

Trending topics in orthodontics research during the last three decades: A longitudinal bibliometric study on the top-cited articles

OBJECTIVE

To perform a bibliometric analysis on the top-cited articles over the last three decades from 1989 to 2018, using a longitudinal set-up, in order to analyse how articles' features have evolved over time.

SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION

A sample of 312 articles divided into three subgroups of 104 top-cited articles for each decade were included. The h-index value was used to determine the sample size.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The articles were identified through a search in the category "dentistry oral surgery and medicine" of the Web of Science database. The information relative to the articles was collected. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the articles and the journals; selected parameters were analysed with the Kruskal-Wallis and the Mann-Whitney U test at the 0.05 level of significance.

RESULTS

The top-cited articles were published mainly by orthodontic journals. Along the last two decades, the scientific contribution of Asian and South American countries rose significantly. The trending topics varied in each decade. Skeletal anchorage-related articles dominated the production of the decade 1999-2008 while new technologies as CBCT displayed a higher prevalence in the last decade, where new topics such as corticotomy-assisted orthodontics started to appear. The number of multi-authored articles increased while the articles from no university institutions decreased.

CONCLUSION

The publications in the three studied decades were significantly different in terms of numbers and characteristics. A longitudinal set-up allows to study the evolution of the scientific production and how the area of interest has developed over time.

The 100 Top-Cited Studies About Pain and Depression

With the estimated high prevalence in the population, the two symptoms of pain and depression threaten the well-being of millions worldwide. Researches of the two symptoms increased year by year. Top-cited studies will help to understand the achievement and guide researchers toward the direction of the research field. However, it is unclear for researches in the field of pain and depression. In this paper, we reviewed the bibliometric characteristics of the top-cited papers about pain and depression. We will review the evidence of authorship, country of origin, institution, journal, study type, and publication year for the 100 top-cited studies on pain and depression based on the Web of Science Core collection. We also highlight studies with the highest cited times. Our study concluded that pain and depression were correlated, which may share common biological pathways.
