Abstract
Aims To investigate the association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and sensory impairments (SIs). Methods We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) (2015). Logistic regressions estimated the odds ratio for associations of SEP with SIs. In addition, Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to assess the causal relationship between them with the inverse variance weighting (IVW) estimator. MR-Egger, simple median, weighted median, maximum likelihood, and robust adjusted profile score were employed for sensitivity analyses. Results In the observational survey, we enrolled 19,690 individuals aged 45 and above. SEP was negatively associated with SIs. Adjusted odds of vision impairment were higher for illiterate (1.50; 95%CI: 1.19, 1.91), less than elementary school diploma (1.76; 95%CI: 1.39, 2.25), middle school diploma (1.53; 95%CI: 1.21, 1.93) and lower income (all p < 0.001). The odds of hearing impairment were significantly higher for people with less than a high school diploma than those with a college degree or higher diploma, for agricultural workers than non-agricultural workers, and for people in low-income families (p < 0.01). The MR analysis also showed that occupation was associated with HI (1.04, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.09, p < 0.05) using IVW. Conclusion We found that both observational and causal evidence supports the theory that SEP can result in SIs and that timely discovery, targeted management, and education can prevent SIs among middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Aging deteriorates peripheral and central auditory structures and functions. In elders, for an accurate audiological evaluation, it is important to explore beyond the cochlear receptor. Audiograms provide an estimation of hearing thresholds, while the amplitudes and latencies of supra-threshold auditory brainstem response (ABR) can offer noninvasive measures of the auditory pathways functioning. Regarding ABR, in young populations, level-specific chirp (LS CE-chirp) stimulus has been proposed as an alternative synchronizing method to obtain larger ABR responses than those evoked by clicks. However, the supra-threshold characteristics of chirp evoked ABR, and their association to hearing thresholds is relatively unknown in the elderly. The aim of this study was to evaluate supra-threshold LS CE-chirp ABRs in an aged population by comparing their features with click ABRs, and evaluating their relationship with audiometric hearing thresholds. METHODS We carried out a cross-sectional study to characterize the hearing of 125 adults aged over 65 years. We determined the audiometric hearing thresholds and supra-threshold ABRs elicited by LS CE-chirp and click stimuli at 80 dB nHL. We evaluated associations by means of partial correlations and covariate adjustment. We performed specific frequencies' analysis and subgroup analysis per hearing level. RESULTS Wave V responses had significantly shorter latencies and larger amplitudes when elicited by LS CE-chirp as compared to click-evoked responses. Audiometric hearing thresholds correlated with age, but ABR characteristics did not. We found mild correlations between hearing thresholds and ABR characteristics, predominantly at higher frequencies and with chirp. We found scarce evidence of correlation between ABR characteristics and the average of behavioral hearing thresholds between 0.5 to 4 kHz (0.5-4 kHz PTA). After subgroup analysis according to the hearing level, no stronger or more significant correlations were found between ABR characteristics and 0.5-4 kHz PTA. DISCUSSION In this study, we found that supra-threshold LS CE-chirp ABR presented some of the previously described similitudes and differences with supra-threshold click ABR in younger populations. Although, the average amplitude and latency of wave V evoked by LS CE-chirp were larger and faster than those evoked by clicks, these results should be taken with caution at the individual level, and further studies are required to state that LS CE-chirp ABRs are better than click ABRs in elders for clinical evaluations. We did not find consistent associations between hearing thresholds and supra-threshold wave V features, suggesting that these measures should be considered independently in the elderly.

Abstract
PURPOSE Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are related to various immune-related adverse events (irAEs). However, the knowledge is limited with rare irAEs like hearing loss. Therefore, we evaluated the characteristics, presentation, and treatment of ICI-related hearing loss by reviewing the individual patient data from the previous studies. METHODS We conducted a systematic search of the Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase databases for studies published until 17 November 2022. The selected MeSH search terms were "hearing loss" OR "hearing impairment" OR "ototoxicity" OR "vestibular toxicity" OR "audiovestibular toxicity" AND "immune checkpoint inhibitor" OR "immunotherapy." RESULTS A total of 38 patients were included. Melanoma was the most frequent diagnosis (73.7%). The median time from ICI initiation to hearing loss development was 3 months. The hearing impairment was secondary to bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in 24 (68.6%) patients, and at least one other irAE accompanied the hearing loss in 24 patients. Hearing loss significantly improved in 45.7% of the patients. The overall response rate and disease control rate were 67.6% and 85.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION We observed that most cases of ICI-related hearing loss were reversible, observed in patients with melanoma, accompanied by other irAEs, and associated with a high response rate to ICIs. With the expanded use of ICIs in the earlier treatment lines and adjuvant settings, the number of survivors with ICI-related hearing loss is expected to increase. Further research is needed to define the true prevalence of ICI-related hearing loss, optimal diagnosis, and management.

Abstract
Background Hearing can be impaired in many neurological conditions and can even represent a forme fruste of specific disorders. Auditory function can be measured by either subjective or objective tests. Objective tests are more useful in identifying which auditory pathway (superior or inferior) is most affected by disease. The inner ear's perilymphatic fluid communicates with the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via the cochlear aqueduct representing a window from which pathological changes in the contents of the CSF due to brain inflammation could, therefore, spread to and cause inflammation in the inner ear, damaging inner hair cells and leading to hearing impairment identifiable on tests of auditory function. Methods A systematic review of the literature was performed, searching for papers with case-control studies that analyzed the hearing and migraine function in patients with neuro-inflammatory, neurodegenerative disorders. With data extracted from these papers, the risk of patients with neurological distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) was then calculated. Results Patients with neurological disorders (headache, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis) had a higher risk of having peripheral auditory deficits when compared to healthy individuals. Conclusion Existing data lend credence to the hypothesis that inflammatory mediators transmitted via fluid exchange across this communication window, thereby represents a key pathobiological mechanism capable of culminating in hearing disturbances associated with neuroimmunological and neuroinflammatory disorders of the nervous system.

Abstract
Age-related (AR) hearing loss (HL) is the most common sensory impairment with heritability of 55%. The aim of this study was to identify genetic variants on chromosome X associated with ARHL through the analysis of data obtained from the UK Biobank. We performed association analysis between self-reported measures of HL and genotyped and imputed variants on chromosome X from ∼460,000 white Europeans. We identified three loci associated with ARHL with a genome-wide significance level (p < 5 × 10-8), ZNF185 (rs186256023, p = 4.9 × 10-10) and MAP7D2 (rs4370706, p = 2.3 × 10-8) in combined analysis of males and females, and LOC101928437 (rs138497700, p = 8.9 × 10-9) in the sex-stratified analysis of males. In-silico mRNA expression analysis showed MAP7D2 and ZNF185 are expressed in mice and adult human inner ear tissues, particularly in the inner hair cells. We estimated that only a small amount of variation of ARHL, 0.4%, is explained by variants on the X chromosome. This study suggests that although there are likely a few genes contributing to ARHL on the X chromosome, the role that the X chromosome plays in the etiology of ARHL may be limited.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Substantial evidence supports the association between untreated hearing loss, cognitive decline, and dementia in the non-tonal language-speaking population. Whether a similar association between hearing loss and cognitive decline and dementia exists in Sinitic tonal language-speaking people is yet to be elucidated. We aimed to systematically review the current evidence on the association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment/decline, and dementia in older adults who speak a Sinitic tonal language. Research Design and Methods This systematic review considered peer-reviewed articles that employed objective or subjective hearing measurement and cognitive function, cognitive impairment, or diagnosis of dementia. All articles written in English and Chinese and published before March 2022 were included. Databases including Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, PsycINFO and Google Scholar, SinoMed, and CBM were utilized using MeSH terms and keywords. Results Thirty-five articles met our inclusion criteria. Of these, 29 unique studies with an estimated 372,154 participants were included in the meta-analyses. Among all included studies, the effect size of cognitive function with hearing loss, the regression coefficient was -0.26 (95% confidence interval [CI], -0.45 to -0.07). Among cross-sectional and cohort studies, a significant association was found between hearing loss and cognitive impairment and dementia, with odds ratios of 1.85 (95% CI, 1.59-2.17) and 1.89 (95% CI, 1.50-2.38), respectively. Discussion and Implications Most of the studies included in this systematic review observed a significant association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment and dementia. There was no significant difference to the findings in non-tonal language populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related hearing loss, mental health conditions, and loneliness commonly affect older adults. This study aimed to determine whether untreated hearing loss is independently associated with depression, anxiety, stress, and loneliness in tonal language-speaking older adults in China. STUDY DESIGN Observational, cross-sectional study. METHODS 293 older adults (111 males, M = 70.33 ± 4.90 years; 182 females, M = 69.02 ± 4.08 years) were recruited. All participants completed a pure tone audiometric hearing assessment, and provided information on living arrangements, marital status, leisure activities, tobacco and alcohol use, and medical history. The Mandarin version of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale was used to measure loneliness, and the Mandarin version of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used to assess a range of symptoms common to depression, stress, and anxiety of the participants. The analysis focused on determining the predictors of depression, anxiety, and stress, and the predictors of measures of loneliness. RESULTS Multiple stepwise regression analyses revealed that the emotional loneliness (β = 0.303, p < 0.001) and living status (β = 0.110, p = 0.048) significantly predicted DASS depression scores; emotional loneliness (β = 0.276, p < 0.001) and a history of vascular disease (β = 0.148, p = 0.009) were significantly related to DASS anxiety scores; emotional loneliness (β = 0.341, p < 0.001) and a history of vascular disease (β = 0.129, p = 0.019) significantly predicted DASS stress scores. Furthermore, multiple stepwise regression analyses showed that DASS stress scores (β = 0.333, p < 0.001), education years (β = -0.126, p = 0.020), marriage status (β = 0.122, p = 0.024), and a history of vascular disease (β = 0.111, p = 0.044) significantly predicted emotional loneliness; four-frequency average hearing loss (β = 0.149, p = 0.010) and DASS stress scores (β = 0.123, p = 0.034) significantly predicted social loneliness scale; and four-frequency average hearing loss (β = 0.167, p = 0.003) and DASS stress scores (β = 0.279, p < 0.001) also significantly predicted overall loneliness. There were no significant associations with high-frequency hearing loss. CONCLUSION This study revealed that loneliness has a significant relationship both with hearing loss and aspects of mental health in an older adult Mandarin-speaking population. However, mental health was not significantly associated with hearing loss in this population.

Abstract
Abstract. A critical review was conducted to examine whether the peripheral hearing status of participants with neurological and psychological disorders was documented in published clinical studies of the auditory P300 response. Literature searches were conducted with three databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Scopus. Studies of participants with seven neurological or psychological disorders were included in the study. Each disorder was coupled with the main search phrase in separate searches on each database. Of the total 102 papers which met the inclusion criteria, the majority (64%) did not describe the peripheral hearing sensitivity of participants. In this review with studies that included participants at risk for hearing impairment, particularly age-related hearing loss, only a single publication adequately described formal hearing evaluation. Peripheral hearing status is rarely defined in studies of the P300 response. The inclusion of participants with a hearing loss likely affects the validity of findings for these studies. We recommend formal hearing assessment prior to inclusion of participants in studies of the auditory P300 response. The findings of this study may increase the awareness among researchers outside the field of audiology of the effects of peripheral hearing loss on the auditory P300.

Abstract
AIM To examine how the severity of age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and tinnitus or the presentation of ARHL with tinnitus is associated with overall cognition, in terms of specific cognitive domains in older community-dwelling Chinese adults. METHODS The study recruited 429 participants aged ≥58 years (mean age, 72.91 ± 7.014 years; female proportion, 57.30%), excluding those with dementia, disability, and severe mental illness. Patients were classified into normal cognition, pre-mild cognitive impairment (pre-MCI), and MCI according to the normative z-scores of neuropsychological test battery. The severity of ARHL and tinnitus was measured by pure-tone audiometry and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory. Cognitive impairment and low functions in specific cognitive domains were used as dependent variables in multiple regression analyses adjusted for covariates. RESULTS ARHL severity was positively associated with MCI and low executive function, delayed memory, and language function. Only individuals with mild (odds ratio (OR) 1.791; CI, 0.952-3.373; P = 0.071), and moderate and the disaster tinnitus (OR, 2.493; CI, 0.982-6.328; P = 0.055) were marginally associated with increased odds of MCI in model 1. Individuals with ARHL and tinnitus (OR, 3.888, CI = 1.481-10.205; OR, 4.471, CI = 1.636-12.219) were independently associated with high risk for MCI in models 1 and 2. CONCLUSIONS ARHL severity and the presentation of ARHL or ARHL with tinnitus were associated with overall cognition. ARHL severity was independently associated with executive function, delayed memory, and language function. The association between tinnitus severity and cognition is not clear. But the group with ARHL and tinnitus is a high-risk group with cognitive impairment. CLINICALTRIALS gov identifier: NCT2017K020.

Abstract
Objectives: The objective of the study was to investigate the association between untreated age-related hearing loss and cognitive impairment in Mandarin-speaking older adults living in China. Methods: Older adults (293; 111 males, M = 70.33 ± 4.90 years; 182 females, M = 69.02 ± 4.08 years) were recruited. All participants completed a pure tone audiometric hearing assessment, Hearing Impairment-Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test (HI-MoCA), and a computerized neuropsychology test battery (CANTAB). The Mandarin version of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale was used to measure the loneliness, and the Mandarin version of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used to measure the current severity of a range of symptoms common to depression, stress, and anxiety of the participants. Results: A multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the average of four mid-frequency thresholds in the better ear was related to CANTAB Paired Associates Learning (β = 0.20, p = 0.002), and the global cognitive function score (HI-MoCA) (β = -0.25, p < 0.001). The average of three high frequencies in the better ear was significantly associated with CANTAB Delayed Matching to Sample (β = -0.16, p = 0.008), and Spatial Working Memory (β = 0.17, p = 0.003). Conclusion: The results revealed a significant relationship between age-related hearing loss and cognitive impairment in Mandarin-speaking older adults. These research outcomes have clinical implications specifically for hearing health care professionals in China and other populations that speak a tonal language, especially when providing hearing rehabilitation.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in the correlation between hearing impairment and cognitive decline, two conditions that have demonstrated a strong association. Hearing loss appears as a risk factor for cognitive impairment, especially among certain populations, notably nursing home residents. Furthermore, hearing loss has been identified as a modifiable age-related condition linked to dementia, and it has been estimated that midlife hearing loss, if eliminated, might decrease the risk of dementia in the general population. Several mechanisms have been suggested to explain the pathologic connections between hearing loss and dementia; however, clear evidence is missing, and the common pathophysiological basis is still unclear. In this review, we discussed current knowledge about the relationship between hearing loss and dementia, and future perspectives in terms of the effects of hearing rehabilitation for early prevention of cognitive decline.

Abstract
cGMP is generated by the cGMP-forming guanylyl cyclases (GCs), the intracellular nitric oxide (NO)-sensitive (soluble) guanylyl cyclase (sGC) and transmembrane GC (e.g. GC-A and GC-B). In summarizing the particular role of cGMP signalling for hearing, we show that GC generally do not interfere significantly with basic hearing function but rather sustain a healthy state for proper temporal coding, fast discrimination and adjustments during injury. sGC is critical for the integrity of the first synapse in the ascending auditory pathway, the inner hair cell synapse. GC-A promotes hair cell stability under stressful conditions such as acoustic trauma or ageing. GC-B plays a role in the development of efferent feed-back and gain control. Regarding the crucial role hearing has for language development, speech discrimination and cognitive brain functions, differential pharmaceutical targeting of GCs offers therapeutic promise for the restoration of hearing.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effects of the aging process on peripheral and central auditory functions in adults with normal hearing. In this study, 149 participants with normal hearing were divided into four groups: aged 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-59 years for statistical purposes. Electrocochleography (EcochG), transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE), Mandarin Hearing in Noise Test (MHINT) and the Gap Detection Test (GDT) were used. Our study found: (1) MHINT is significantly associated with aging (left ear R2=0.29, right ear R2=0.35). (2) TEOAE amplitude, TEOAE contralateral acoustic stimulation (CS) amplitude, EcochG action potential (AP), EcochG AP latency, EcochG summating potential (SP) and GDT progressively declined with age. (3) The EcochG SP/AP has no statistically significant difference among different age groups. (4) The peripheral auditory function of the right ear declines more slowly than that of the left ear. (5) Hypofunction of the central auditory system accelerates after age 40. The results demonstrate: (1) The age-related decline in the ability of speech recognition in a noisy environment may be the most sensitive indicator that reflects auditory function. (2) The decline of central auditory function is independent of peripheral auditory function, according to the auditory characteristics of the right ear. (3) Auditory function needs to be assessed individually to allow early prevention before age 40.

Abstract
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the most prevalent sensory deficit in the elderly and constitutes the third highest risk factor for dementia. Lifetime noise exposure, genetic predispositions for degeneration, and metabolic stress are assumed to be the major causes of ARHL. Both noise-induced and hereditary progressive hearing have been linked to decreased cell surface expression and impaired conductance of the potassium ion channel KV7.4 (KCNQ4) in outer hair cells, inspiring future therapies to maintain or prevent the decline of potassium ion channel surface expression to reduce ARHL. In concert with KV7.4 in outer hair cells, KV7.1 (KCNQ1) in the stria vascularis, calcium-activated potassium channels BK (KCNMA1) and SK2 (KCNN2) in hair cells and efferent fiber synapses, and KV3.1 (KCNC1) in the spiral ganglia and ascending auditory circuits share an upregulated expression or subcellular targeting during final differentiation at hearing onset. They also share a distinctive fragility for noise exposure and age-dependent shortfalls in energy supply required for sustained surface expression. Here, we review and discuss the possible contribution of select potassium ion channels in the cochlea and auditory pathway to ARHL. We postulate genes, proteins, or modulators that contribute to sustained ion currents or proper surface expressions of potassium channels under challenging conditions as key for future therapies of ARHL.

Abstract
Tinnitus is the perception of sound without the occurrence of an acoustic event. The deficit in auditory sensory or echoic memory may be the cause of the perception of tinnitus. This study considered the mismatch negativity (MMN) to investigate the potential difference between and within groups of persons with normal hearing (NH) and tinnitus. Using an auditory multi-feature paradigm to elicit the MMN, this study considered the MMN peak amplitude at two central frequencies for two MMN subcomponents. These central frequencies were 1 and 5 kHz, which the latter was closer to the perceived tinnitus frequency in the group with tinnitus. The deviants were higher frequency, lower frequency, higher intensity, lower intensity, duration, location (left), location (right), and gap. The pure tone audiometry (PTA) test and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) test showed no meaningful difference between the two groups. For the frontal subcomponent, the mean amplitudes of the MMN peak for the two groups illustrated less negative meaningful MMN peak amplitudes in the group of persons with tinnitus. For the supratemporal component at 5 kHz central frequency, amplitudes were lower for the group of persons with tinnitus, whereas for the central frequency of 1 kHz, most deviants exhibited meaningful differences. Additionally, within-group comparisons indicated that mean amplitudes for both groups were more negative at the central frequency of 1 kHz for the frontal MMN subcomponent. In comparison, the supratemporal component illustrated a lower peak amplitude at 5 kHz central frequency in the group of persons with tinnitus and no difference in the NH group, which is a unique observation of this study. Results of the between-groups are in accordance with previous studies and within-group comparisons consider the probability of decreasing the change detection capability of the brain. The results of this study indicate that increasing the frequency of the stimuli close to the tinnitus perceived frequencies decreases the prediction error, including the prediction error of the silence. Such a decrease may cause the prediction error of the spontaneous neural activity in the auditory pathway to exceed the silence prediction error, and as a result, increases the probability of occurrence of tinnitus in higher frequencies according to the predictive coding model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the cochlear segment in which spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) loss may more severely impact discrimination thresholds. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirteen temporal bones from 13 subjects between 55 and 77 years of age were analyzed. The organ of corti was analyzed to identify the loss of hair cells, and the number of SGNs in each cochlear segment were counted. The results of the speech perception test (SPT) and pure tone audiometry (PTA) tests were collected. PTA averages for low and high frequencies were calculated. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson, Spearman, and multilinear regression tests were performed. RESULTS No statistically significant correlation was identified between the patient's age and number of SGNs. Statistically significant differences were observed between the number of SGNs in the different cochlear segments (one-way ANOVA: p<0.0001) and between poor PTA average and SPT scores (negative correlation) (p=0.03). A statistically significant correlation was identified between the overall number of cochlear SGNs and SPT scores (p=0.02) and between the number of SGNs in cochlear segments I (p=0.04) and II and the SPT score (p=0.03). CONCLUSIONS We identified that residual SGNs in the basal and middle turns of the cochlea might be determinants of speech perception.

Abstract
It is well-established that excessive noise exposure can systematically shift audiometric thresholds (i.e., noise-induced hearing loss, NIHL) making sounds at the lower end of the dynamic range difficult to detect. An often overlooked symptom of NIHL is the degraded ability to resolve temporal fluctuations in supra-threshold signals. Given that the temporal properties of speech are highly dynamic, it is not surprising that NIHL greatly reduces one's ability to clearly decipher spoken language. However, systematic characterization of noise-induced impairments on supra-threshold signals in humans is difficult given the variability in noise exposure among individuals. Fortunately, the chinchilla is audiometrically similar to humans, making it an ideal animal model to investigate noise-induced supra-threshold deficits. Through a series of studies using the chinchilla, the authors have elucidated several noise-induced deficits in temporal processing that occur at supra-threshold levels. These experiments highlight the importance of the chinchilla model in developing an understanding of noise-induced deficits in temporal processing.
