Recipient iNOS but not eNOS deficiency reduces luminal narrowing in tracheal allografts

Monotherapy With Anti-CD70 Antibody Causes Long-Term Mouse Cardiac Allograft Acceptance With Induction of Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells

Allograft rejection has been an obstacle for the long-term survival of patients. CD70, a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family member critically expressed on antigen-presenting cells and strongly but transiently up-regulated during lymphocyte activation, represents an important co-stimulatory molecule that induces effective T cell responses. We used a mouse heterotopic cardiac transplantation model to evaluate the effects of monotherapy with the antibody targeting mouse CD70 (FR70) on transplantation tolerance and its immunoregulatory activity. FR70-treated C3H recipient mice permanently accepted B6 fully mismatched cardiac allografts. Consistent with the graft survival, the infiltration of CD8⁺ T cells in the graft was reduced, dendritic cells were differentiated into a tolerogenic status, and the number of regulatory T cells was elevated both in the graft and the recipient’s spleen. In addition, naïve C3H given an adoptive transfer of spleen cells from the primary recipients with FR70 treatment accepted a heart graft from a matching B6 donor but not third-party BALB/c mice.　Our findings show that treatment with FR70 induced regulatory cells and inhibited cytotoxic T cell proliferation, which led to long-term acceptance of mouse cardiac allografts. These findings highlight the potential role of anti-CD70 antibodies as a clinically effective treatment for allograft rejection.

Working toward immune tolerance in lung transplantation

Long-term allograft survival is a major challenge facing solid organ transplantation. Recent studies have shown a negative correlation between infiltration of memory T cells and allograft survival. Furthermore, blockade of leukocyte activation increases acceptance of transplanted organs, including heart, liver, and kidney. Lung allografts are associated with high rates of rejection, and therapies that increase acceptance of other transplanted organs have not translated into the lung. In this issue of the JCI, Krupnick and colleagues demonstrate in a murine model that lung allograft acceptance requires infiltration of a specific T cell population into the graft. This study highlights the unique immunobiology of the lung and the complexity of lung transplant tolerance.

Complement-mediated microvascular injury leads to chronic rejection

Microvascular loss may be an unappreciated root cause of chronic rejection for all solid organ transplants. As the only solid organ transplant that does not undergo primary systemic arterial revascularization at the time of surgery, lung transplants rely on the establishment of a microcirculation and are especially vulnerable to the effects of microvascular loss. Microangiopathy, with its attendant ischemia, can lead to tissue infarction and airway fibrosis. Maintaining healthy vasculature in lung allografts may be critical for preventing terminal airway fibrosis, also known as the bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS). BOS is the major obstacle to lung transplant success and affects up to 60% of patients surviving 5 years. The role of complement in causing acute microvascular loss and ischemia during rejection has recently been examined using the mouse orthotopic tracheal transplantation; this is an ideal model for parsing the role of airway vasculature in rejection. Prior to the development of airway fibrosis in rejecting tracheal allografts, C3 deposits on the vascular endothelium just as tissue hypoxia is first detected. With the eventual destruction of vessels, microvascular blood flow to the graft stops altogether for several days. Complement deficiency and complement inhibition lead to markedly improved tissue oxygenation in transplants, diminished airway remodeling, and accelerated vascular repair. CD4+ T cells and antibody-dependent complement activity independently mediate vascular destruction and sustained tissue ischemia during acute rejection. Consequently, interceding against complement-mediated microvascular injury with adjunctive therapy during acute rejection episodes, in addition to standard immunosuppression which targets CD4+ T cells, may help prevent the subsequent development of chronic rejection.

Antioxidant properties of pioglitazone limit nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate hydrogen oxidase and augment superoxide dismutase activity in cardiac allotransplantation

BACKGROUND

Many non-immunologic factors contribute to the development of cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), chief among them being ischemia-reperfusion injury associated with oxidative stress. We hypothesized that pioglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ agonist, could attenuate graft oxidant stress in cardiac transplantation.

METHODS

Experiments were performed using a murine heterotopic cardiac allotransplantation model. Pioglitazone was administered to recipients once daily, beginning 1 day before transplantation.

RESULTS

At 4 hours after transplantation, pioglitazone significantly reduced the expression of endothelial cell adhesion receptors and infiltration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). The anti-oxidant balance in pioglitazone-treated cardiac allografts was significantly bolstered by reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate hydrogen (NADPH) oxidase (Nox1 and p22(phox) sub-units) activity and preservation of manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, resulting in the mitigation of oxidative damage at the level of lipids, proteins, and DNA. At 7 days after transplantation, PPAR-γ was significantly up-regulated by pioglitazone, but nuclear factor-κB and inducible nitric oxide synthase were significantly down-regulated. A concomitant reduction of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and graft leukosequestration was noted. Pioglitazone consequently prolonged cardiac allograft survival and attenuated CAV development. In vitro experiments demonstrated that pioglitazone decreased transendothelial PMN migration, NADPH oxidase activity, and loss of SOD activity in PMNs and endothelial cells.

CONCLUSIONS

Pioglitazone can suppress the oxidative stress and damage and can stimulate antioxidant capacity in cardiac allografts after transplantation. Mitigation of graft oxidant stress could be an important mechanism through which pioglitazone confers benefit after cardiac transplantation.

Ecto-5'-nucleotidase (CD73) attenuates allograft airway rejection through adenosine 2A receptor stimulation

There are multiple drivers of leukocyte recruitment in lung allografts that contribute to lymphocytic bronchitis (LB) and bronchiolitis obliterans (BO). The innate mechanisms driving (or inhibiting) leukocyte trafficking to allografts remain incompletely understood. This study tested the hypothesis that CD73 (ecto-5'nucleotidase), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of AMP to adenosine, is a critical negative regulator of LB and BO. Implantation of tracheal allografts from wild type (WT) mice into CD73(-/-) recipients revealed a striking increase in airway luminal obliteration at 7 d (62 +/- 4% and 47 +/- 5% for CD73(-/-) and WT allograft recipients, respectively; p = 0.046). There was also a concordant increase in CD3(+) lymphocytic infiltration (523 +/- 41 cells and 313 +/- 43 cells for CD73(-/-) and WT allograft recipients, respectively; p = 0.013). Because real-time PCR revealed a 43-fold upregulation of mRNA for the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) in WT allografts compared with WT isografts (p = 0.032), additional experiments were performed to determine whether the protective effect of CD73 was due to generation of adenosine and its stimulation of the A2AR. Treatment of WT recipients with an A2AR agonist significantly reduced CD3(+) lymphocyte infiltration and airway luminal obliteration; similar treatment of CD73(-/-) recipients rescued them from LB and airway obliteration. These data implicate CD73 acting through adenosine generation and its stimulation of the A2AR as a critical negative modulator of lymphocyte recruitment into airway allografts. The CD73/adenosine axis might be a new therapeutic target to prevent BO.

Translational research: animal models of obliterative bronchiolitis after lung transplantation

Obliterative bronchiolitis (OB) or chronic graft dysfunction remains the major limitation to long-term success of lung transplantation. Investigation using animal models is a critical component of research to understand the underlying pathological mechanisms and to develop novel preventive and therapeutic strategies for OB. Multiple animal models of OB exist, including orthotopic lung transplantation in rodents and large animals, orthotopic tracheal transplantation and heterotopic transplantation of a trachea in variable sites such as subcutaneous, intraomental and intrapulmonary sites. The most important issue for researchers is not specifically which model is the best but which is the most appropriate model to test their scientific hypothesis. For example, while orthotopic lung transplantation best mimics the overall surgical procedure, a question regarding fibrotic processes of OB may be better answered using heterotopic tracheal transplant models because of their reliable reproducibility of allograft obliterative airway fibrosis. Animal models should be continuously refined, modified and sometimes combined to fit the particular research purpose. We review the available animal models, their modifications and possible applications to assist researchers in choosing the appropriate model for their intended research.

Suppression of nitrosative and oxidative stress to reduce cardiac allograft vasculopathy

Oxidant injury occurs when an organ is severed from its native blood supply and then reperfused and continues during subsequent periods of immune attack. Experiments here test the hypothesis that an antioxidant given only in the peri-reperfusion period protects against not only oxidative but also nitrosative stress, leading to reduced vasculopathy long after cardiac allotransplantation. Experiments were performed using a murine heterotopic cardiac transplantation model. An antioxidant, in the form of intraperitoneal high-dose riboflavin, was given to recipients during the initial 3 days after transplantation. Antioxidant-treated mice showed significantly longer graft survival than control mice. At 4 h after transplantation, antioxidant treatment significantly reduced graft lipid peroxidation and oxidized DNA and preserved antioxidant enzyme activity. At day 6 posttransplantation, the redox-sensitive transcription factor nuclear factor-kappaB and inducible nitric oxide synthase were significantly reduced following antioxidant treatment, with concomitant reduction of nitrotyrosine. Despite the limited duration of antioxidant treatment, both acute and chronic rejection were significantly suppressed. In vitro experiments confirmed suppression of nitrosative and oxidative stress and cardiomyocyte damage in antioxidant-treated cardiac allografts. Collectively, antioxidant administration during the initial 3 days after transplantation significantly reduces nitrosative and oxidative stress in cardiac allografts, modulates immune responses, and protects against vasculopathy.

The complex role of iNOS in acutely rejecting cardiac transplants

This review summarizes the evidence for a detrimental role of nitric oxide (NO) derived from inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and/or reactive nitrogen species such as peroxynitrite in acutely rejecting cardiac transplants. In chronic cardiac transplant rejection, iNOS may have an opposing beneficial component. The purpose of this review is primarily to address issues related to acute rejection, which is a recognized risk factor for chronic rejection. The evidence for a detrimental role is based upon strategies involving nonselective NOS inhibitors, NO neutralizers, selective iNOS inhibitors, and iNOS gene deletion in rodent models of cardiac rejection. The review is presented in the context of the impact on various components, including graft survival, histological rejection, and cardiac function, which may contribute to the process of graft rejection in toto. Possible limitations of each strategy are discussed in order to understand better the variance in published findings, including issues related to the potential importance of cell localization of iNOS expression. Finally, the concept of a dual role for NO and its downstream product, peroxynitrite, in rejection vs immune regulation is discussed.

A mouse model of orthotopic vascularized aerated lung transplantation

Outcomes after lung transplantation are markedly inferior to those after other solid organ transplants. A better understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to lung graft injury will be critical to improve outcomes. Advances in this field have been hampered by the lack of a mouse model of lung transplantation. Here, we report a mouse model of vascularized aerated single lung transplantation utilizing cuff techniques. We show that syngeneic grafts have normal histological appearance with minimal infiltration of T lymphocytes. Allogeneic grafts show acute cellular rejection with infiltration of T lymphocytes and recipient-type antigen presenting cells. Our data show that we have developed a physiological model of lung transplantation in the mouse, which provides ample opportunity for the study of nonimmune and immune mechanisms that contribute to lung allograft injury.

Early growth response gene-1 promotes airway allograft rejection

Chronic airway rejection, characterized by lymphocytic bronchitis, epithelial cell damage, and obliterative bronchiolitis (OB), limits long-term survival after lung transplantation. The transcription factor early growth response gene-1 (Egr-1) induces diverse inflammatory mediators, some involved in OB pathogenesis. An orthotopic mouse tracheal transplant model was used to determine whether Egr-1 promotes development of airway allograft rejection. Significantly higher Egr-1 mRNA levels were seen in allografts (3.2-fold increase vs. isografts, P = 0.012). Allografts revealed thickening of epithelial and subepithelial airway layers (51 +/- 4% luminal encroachment for allografts vs. 20 +/- 3% for isografts, P < 0.0001) marked by significant lymphocytic infiltration. Absence of the Egr-1 gene in donor (but not recipient) tissue resulted in significant reduction in luminal narrowing (34 +/- 4%, P = 0.0001) with corresponding diminution of T cell infiltration. Egr-1 null allografts exhibited a striking reduction in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. Effector cytokines previously implicated in OB pathogenesis with known Egr-1 promoter motifs (IL-1beta and JE/monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) were reduced in Egr-1 null allografts. These data suggest a paradigm wherein local induction of Egr-1 in tracheal allografts drives expression of inflammatory mediators responsible for lymphocyte recruitment and tissue destruction characteristic of airway rejection.

Human and murine obliterative bronchiolitis in transplant

Obliterative bronchiolitis is a devastating illness that limits the long-term success of lung transplantation. Its high prevalence and overall poor response to current therapeutic measures demands further research to elucidate pathogenic mechanisms. Toward this goal, there is a role for animal models to study the mechanisms of obliterative bronchiolitis, such as the murine heterotopic tracheal allograft model. This review compares the tracheal allograft model to human obliterative bronchiolitis pathology and highlights the important mechanisms of airway rejection described using this model. Although certain limitations exist, the pursuit of proof-of-concept studies in this model, as well as other animal models, can provide the basis for genetic and cellular translational human studies directed toward post-transplant obliterative bronchiolitis pathogenesis. To meet these challenges, we call for the establishment of a National Institutes of Health-supported Lung Transplant Network to better orchestrate translational research efforts in obliterative bronchiolitis pathogenesis and treatment, and to advance the field of lung transplantation.

Obligatory role for interleukin-13 in obstructive lesion development in airway allografts

The pathogenesis of bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), a common and devastating obliterative disorder of small airways following lung transplantation, remains poorly understood. Lesions are characterized in their early stages by lymphocyte influx that evolves into dense fibrotic infiltrates. Airway specimens taken from patients with histological BO revealed infiltrating myofibroblasts, which strongly expressed the signaling chain of the high affinity interleukin-13 (IL-13) receptor IL-13Ralpha1. Because IL-13 has proinflammatory and profibrotic actions, a contributory role for IL-13 in BO development was examined using murine models of orthotopic and heterotopic tracheal transplantation. Compared with airway isografts, allografts exhibited a significant increase in relative IL-13 mRNA and protein levels. Allogeneic tracheas transplanted into IL-13-deficient mice were protected from BO in both transplant models. Flow cytometric analysis of orthotopic transplant tissue digests revealed markedly fewer infiltrating mononuclear phagocytes and CD3(+) T lymphocytes in IL-13-deficient recipients. Furthermore, protection from luminal obliteration, collagen deposition, and myofibroblast infiltration was observed in heterotopic airways transplanted into the IL-13(-/-) recipients. Transforming growth factor-beta1 expression was significantly decreased in tracheal allografts into IL-13(-/-) recipients, compared to wild-type counterparts. These human and murine data implicate IL-13 as a critical effector cytokine driving cellular recruitment and subsequent fibrosis in clinical and ex-perimental BO.

CXCR3 and its ligands in a murine model of obliterative bronchiolitis: regulation and function

Lung transplantation remains the only effective therapy for patients with end-stage lung disease, but survival is limited by the development of obliterative bronchiolitis (OB). The chemokine receptor CXCR3 and two of its ligands, CXCL9 and CXCL10, have been identified as important mediators of OB. However, the relative contribution of CXCL9 and CXCL10 to the development of OB and the mechanism of regulation of these chemokines has not been well defined. In this study, we demonstrate that CXCL9 and CXCL10 are up-regulated in unique patterns following tracheal transplantation in mice. In these experiments, CXCL9 expression peaked 7 days posttransplant, while CXCL10 expression peaked at 1 day and then again 7 days posttransplant. Expression of CXCL10 was also up-regulated in a novel murine model of lung ischemia, and in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid taken from human lungs 24 h after lung transplantation. In further analysis, we found that 3 h after transplantation CXCL10 is donor tissue derived and not dependent on IFN-gamma or STAT1, while 24 h after transplantation CXCL10 is from recipient tissue and regulated by IFN-gamma and STAT1. Expression of both CXCL9 and CXCL10 7 days posttransplant is regulated by IFN-gamma and STAT1. Finally, we demonstrate that deletion of CXCR3 in recipients reduces airway obliteration. However, deletion of either CXCL9 or CXCL10 did not affect airway obliteration. These data show that in this murine model of obliterative bronchiolitis, these chemokines are differentially regulated following transplantation, and that deletion of either chemokine alone does not affect the development of airway obliteration.

BLT1-mediated T cell trafficking is critical for rejection and obliterative bronchiolitis after lung transplantation

Leukotriene B₄ is a lipid mediator that recently has been shown to have potent chemotactic activity for effector T lymphocytes mediated through its receptor, BLT1. Here, we developed a novel murine model of acute lung rejection to demonstrate that BLT1 controls effector CD8⁺ T cell trafficking into the lung and that disruption of BLT1 signaling in CD8⁺ T cells reduces lung inflammation and mortality in the model. In addition, we used BLT1-deficient mice and a BLT1 antagonist in two tracheal transplant models of lung transplantation to demonstrate the importance of BLT1 for the recruitment of T cells into tracheal allografts. We also show that BLT1-mediated CD8⁺ T cell recruitment plays an important role in the development of airway fibroproliferation and obliteration. Finally, in human studies of lung transplant recipients, we found that BLT1 is up-regulated on T lymphocytes isolated from the airways of patients with obliterative bronchiolitis. These data demonstrate that BLT1 contributes to the development of lung rejection and obliterative bronchiolitis by mediating effector T lymphocyte trafficking into the lung. This is the first report that describes a pathologic role for BLT1-mediated T lymphocyte recruitment in disease and identifies BLT1 as a potential therapeutic target after lung transplantation.

Reciprocal regulation of airway rejection by the inducible gas-forming enzymes heme oxygenase and nitric oxide synthase

Obliterative bronchiolitis (OB) develops insidiously in nearly half of all lung transplant recipients. Although typically preceded by a CD8⁺ T cell–rich lymphocytic bronchitis, it remains unresponsive to conventional immunosuppression. Using an airflow permissive model to study the role of gases flowing over the transplanted airway, it is shown that prolonged inhalation of sublethal doses of carbon monoxide (CO), but not nitric oxide (NO), obliterate the appearance of the obstructive airway lesion. Induction of the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of CO, heme oxygenase (Hmox) 1, increased carboxyhemoglobin levels and suppressed lymphocytic bronchitis and airway luminal occlusion after transplantation. In contrast, zinc protoporphyrin IX, a competitive inhibitor of Hmox, increased airway luminal occlusion. Compared with wild-type allografts, expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), which promotes the influx of cytoeffector leukocytes and airway graft rejection, was strikingly reduced by either enhanced expression of Hmox-1 or exogenous CO. Hmox-1/CO decreased nuclear factor (NF)-κB binding activity to the iNOS promoter region and iNOS expression. Inhibition of soluble guanylate cyclase did not interfere with the ability of CO to suppress OB, implicating a cyclic guanosine 3′,5′-monophosphate–independent mechanism through which CO suppresses NF-κB, iNOS transcription, and OB. Prolonged CO inhalation represents a new immunosuppresive strategy to prevent OB.

Chemokine-mediated angiogenesis: an essential link in the evolution of airway fibrosis?

Angiogenesis may be an important factor in the development of fibrotic lung disease. Prior studies have strongly suggested a role for angiogenic vascular remodeling in pulmonary fibrosis, and emerging evidence indicates that new vessel formation is critical in airway fibrosis. Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome is a fibrotic occlusion of distal airways that is largely responsible for the morbidity and mortality of patients after lung transplantation. In this issue, Belperio et al. demonstrate a role for CXC chemokine receptor 2 in the regulation of angiogenesis-mediated airway fibroproliferation. By integrating an understanding of neovascularization into the study of events that occur between inflammation and fibrosis, it becomes increasingly possible to rationally design therapies that can halt conditions of maladaptive fibrosis.

Simultaneous LFA-1 and CD40 ligand antagonism prevents airway remodeling in orthotopic airway transplantation: implications for the role of respiratory epithelium as a modulator of fibrosis

Airway remodeling is a prominent feature of certain immune-mediated lung diseases such as asthma and chronic lung transplant rejection. Under conditions of airway inflammation, the respiratory epithelium may serve an important role in this remodeling process. Given the proposed role of respiratory epithelium in nonspecific injury models, we investigated the respiratory epithelium in an immune-specific orthotopic airway transplant model. MHC-mismatched tracheal transplants in mice were used to generate alloimmune-mediated airway lesions. Attenuation of this immune injury and alteration of antidonor reactivity were achieved by the administration of combined anti-LFA-1/anti-CD40L mAbs. By contrast, without immunotherapy, transplanted airways remodeled with a flattening of respiratory epithelium and significant subepithelial fibrosis. Unopposed alloimmune injury for 10 days was associated with subsequent epithelial transformation and subepithelial fibrosis that could not be reversed with immunotherapy. The relining of donor airways with recipient-derived epithelium was delayed with immunotherapy resulting in partially chimeric airways by 28 days. Partial chimerism was sufficient to prevent luminal fibrosis. However, epithelial chimerism was also associated with airway remodeling. Therefore, there appears to be an intimate relationship between the morphology and level of chimerism of the respiratory epithelium and the degree of airway remodeling following alloimmune injury.

Bronchiolitis obliterans in children

Bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) in children is a relatively rare diagnosis. The increase in lung and bone marrow transplantation in children, however, has led to a heightened interest in BO, as this is one of the important complications of those procedures. This article will discuss BO as an entity that can follow any of several illnesses or toxic exposures, in addition to following allogeneic lung or bone marrow transplantation. The complex and incompletely understood pathology, pathogenesis, and molecular pathology involved in BO remain the subject of ongoing investigations. As the prognosis for BO is uncertain and treatment is often unsuccessful, the continued need for the recognition of surrogate markers for BO in patients at risk and the development of better forms of therapy are paramount. This review will describe our current understanding of BO, and will call attention to those research areas that require continuing efforts in order to prevent or treat this entity.

The role of nitric oxide in renal transplantation

This review discusses the concept that nitric oxide synthase (NOS) may orchestrate both the inflammatory response to the renal allograft and anti-inflammatory defense in the graft itself. NO is produced by endothelial, epithelial, as well as inflammatory cells. In the setting of transplantation, the endothelium is the first lining to be subjected to the early response to injury. In turn, activated endothelial cells facilitate leukocyte recruitment, immune-mediated injury, and angiogenesis. On activation by inflammatory stimuli, endothelial cells up-regulate multiple vasoactive substances, oxygen radicals, cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors. Therefore, endothelial integrity, especially the expression of protecting vasoactive agents, such as NO, may be a key factor in resistance or sensitivity to transplantation-mediated injury. Thus, evaluating the mechanisms by which NO is involved in either protecting or injuring the transplanted allogeneic kidney is important for our understanding of renal allograft rejection. This review focuses on the role of NO in the inflammatory endothelial-leukocyte interactions, which are implicated in acute and chronic rejection of the transplanted kidney.

[Bronchiolitis with airflow obstruction in adults]

PURPOSE

The purpose of this paper is twofold: to describe the clinical and anatomical characteristics of bronchiolitis associated with airflow obstruction in adults; to present through a clinical approach, a classification of the main aetiologies or pathological frames associated with that entity.

KEY POINTS

The constrictive bronchiolitis type is the most frequently encountered. On clinical grounds, cough, crackles, and a progressive dyspnea develop usually within a few weeks. Radiological signs of bronchiolar abnormalities are best visualized on high resolution expiratory CT scan. The decrease in maximal airflows and oxygen tension is of limited amplitude and poorly reversible with bronchodilators. Diagnosis is easily performed when a causative event, or the clinical context, can be delineated: inhalation of toxic fumes, diffuse bronchiectasis, rheumatoid arthritis, lung or bone marrow transplantation. Delayed formation of bronchiectasis in the central airways is common. The treatment is not standardized; corticosteroids are usually prescribed as a first line therapy; the benefit of the addition of, or substitution with immunosuppressive drugs has not been adequately evaluated, but is, on the mean, of limited amplitude.

PERSPECTIVES

Recent advances in the identification of inhaled agents toxic for the distal airways help in establishing appropriate measures of prevention. When the aetiology of the bronchiolitis cannot be suspected, extensive search of a causative agent should be performed, including microbial and mineral analysis of bronchoalveolar products. Negative results should lead to perform a surgical lung biopsy. The study of chronic rejection processes in animal models of lung transplantation, the identification of inhibitory factors of bronchiolar fibrogenesis, and the efficacy of some anti-cytokines on inflammatory processes could result in new therapeutic approaches.
