Elevated temperature impairs gonadal development by suppressing the expression of the genes for kisspeptin, GnRH1 and GTH subunits in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

Temperature is a preeminent factor in the regulation of fish reproduction and hinders gonadal development beyond a specific threshold. To comprehend the molecular mechanism responsible for reproductive suppression at different temperature, expression of the genes encoding kisspeptin (kiss2), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (gnrh1) and their receptors (gpr54, gnrh1r) in the brain, and the gonadotropin (GTH) subunits (fshb and lhb) in the pituitary were studied in juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) along with gonadal histology. Fish were acclimatized to three distinct temperatures, including 31 °C, 34 °C and 37 °C for 14 days. The mRNA levels of kiss2, gpr54, gnrh1, and gnrh1r were significantly decreased at 37 °C compared to 31 °C and 34 °C in the both sexes. In parallel, the expression level of fshb in the both sexes and lhb in the female were significantly lower at 37 °C in the pituitary. Histologically, the gonads of both sexes had normal growth of gametes at control temperature (31 °C), whereas the spermatogenesis and oocyte maturation were slowed down and atretic oocytes were found in the ovary at 37 °C acclimation temperature. Taken together, the results imply that elevated temperature beyond the specific threshold may have a negative impact on reproduction by suppressing the gene expressions of kisspeptin/GnRH1/GTH system and eventually restrains normal growth and maturation of gametes in the both sexes of Nile tilapia.

Fluctuating and Stable High Temperatures Differentially Affect Reproductive Endocrinology of Female Pupfish

For many fishes, reproductive function is thermally constrained such that exposure to temperatures above some upper threshold has detrimental effects on gametic development and maturation, spawning frequency, and mating behavior. Such impairment of reproductive performance at elevated temperatures involves changes to hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis signaling and diminished gonadal steroidogenesis. However, how HPG pathways respond to consistently high versus temporally elevated temperatures is not clear. Here, sexually mature Amargosa River Pupfish (Cyprinodon nevadensis amargosae) were maintained under thermal regimes of either stable ∼25°C (low temperature), diurnal cycling temperatures between ∼27 and 35°C (fluctuating temperature), or stable ∼35°C (high temperature) conditions for 50 days to examine effects of these conditions on HPG endocrine signaling components in the pituitary gland and gonad, ovarian and testicular gametogenesis status, and liver gene expression relating to oogenesis. Female pupfish maintained under stable high and fluctuating temperature treatments showed reduced gonadosomatic index values as well as a lower proportion of oocytes in the lipid droplet and vitellogenic stages. Females in both fluctuating and stable 35°C conditions exhibited reduced ovarian mRNAs for steroid acute regulatory protein (star), cholesterol side chain-cleavage enzyme, P450scc (cyp11a1), and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3bhsd), while ovarian transcripts encoding 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11bhsd) and sex hormone-binding globulin (shbg) were elevated in females at constant 35°C only. Ovarian aromatase (cyp19a1a) mRNA levels were unaffected, but circulating 17β-estradiol (E2) was lower in females at 35°C compared to the fluctuating temperature condition. In the liver, mRNA levels for choriogenins and vitellogenin were downregulated in both the fluctuating and 35°C conditions, while hepatic estrogen receptor 2a (esr2a) and shbg mRNAs were elevated in 35°C females. Taken together, these results demonstrate the potential for elevated temperatures to impair ovarian steroidogenesis and reduce egg envelope and vitellogenin protein production in female C. n. amargosae pupfish, while also shedding light on how thermal regimes that only intermittently reach the upper thermal range for reproduction have differential impacts on reproductive endocrine pathways than constantly warm conditions.

A cross-taxonomic perspective on the integration of temperature cues in vertebrate seasonal neuroendocrine pathways

The regulation of seasonality has been an area of interest for decades, yet global climate change has created extra urgency in the quest to understand how sensory circuits and neuroendocrine control systems interact to generate flexibility in biological timekeeping. The capacity of temperature to alter endogenous or photoperiod-regulated neuroendocrine mechanisms driving seasonality, either as a direct cue or through temperature-dependent effects on energy and metabolism, is at the heart of this phenological flexibility. However, until relatively recently, little research had been done on the integration of temperature information in canonical seasonal neuroendocrine pathways, particularly in vertebrates. We review recent advances from research in vertebrates that deepens our understanding of how temperature cues are perceived and integrated into seasonal hypothalamic thyroid hormone (TH) signaling, which is a critical regulator of downstream seasonal phenotypic changes such as those regulated by the BPG (brain-pituitary-gonadal) axis. Temperature perception occurs through cutaneous transient receptor potential (TRP) neurons, though sensitivity of these neurons varies markedly across taxa. Although photoperiod is the dominant cue used to trigger seasonal physiology or entrain circannual clocks, across birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians, seasonality appears to be temperature sensitive and in at least some cases this appears to be related to phylogenetically conserved TH signaling in the hypothalamus. Nevertheless, the exact mechanisms through which temperature modulates seasonal neuroendocrine pathways remains poorly understood.

Accustomed to the heat: Temperature and thyroid hormone influences on oogenesis and gonadal steroidogenesis pathways vary among populations of Amargosa pupfish (Cyprinodon nevadensis amargosae)

Many fish experience diminished reproductive performance under atypically high or prolonged elevations of temperature. Such high temperature inhibition of reproduction comes about in part from altered stimulation of gametogenesis by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) endocrine axis. Elevated temperatures have also been shown to affect thyroid hormone (TH) signaling, and altered TH status under high temperatures may impact gametogenesis via crosstalk with HPG axis pathways. Here, we examined effects of temperature and 3'-triiodo-_L-thyronine (T₃) on pathways for gonadal steroidogenesis and gametogenesis in Amargosa pupfish (Cyprinodon nevadensis amargosae) from two allopatric populations: 1) the Amargosa River - a highly variable temperature habitat, and 2) Tecopa Bore - an invariably warm groundwater-fed marsh. These populations were previously shown to differ in TH signaling profiles both in the wild and under common laboratory conditions. Sexually-mature pupfish from each population were maintained at 24 °C or 34 °C for 88 days, after which a subset of fish was treated with T₃ for 18-24 h. In both populations, mRNA abundances for follicle-stimulating hormone receptor and luteinizing hormone receptor were higher in the ovary and testis at 24 °C compared to 34 °C. Females from Tecopa Bore - but not from the Amargosa River - also had greater ovarian transcript abundances for steroidogenic enzymes cytochrome P450 aromatase, 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase at 24 °C compared to 34 °C, as well as higher liver mRNA levels of vitellogenins and choriogenins at cooler temperature. Transcript abundances for estrogen receptors esr1, esr2a, and esr2b were reduced at 34 °C in Amargosa River females, but not in Tecopa Bore females. T₃ augmented gonadal gene transcript levels for steroid acute regulatory protein (StAR) transporter in both sexes and populations. T₃ also downregulated liver estrogen receptor mRNAs in females from the warmer Tecopa Bore habitat only, suggesting T₃ modulation of liver E₂ sensitivity as a possible mechanism whereby temperature-induced changes in TH status may contribute to shifts in thermal sensitivity for oogenesis.

Anomalous Temperature Interdicts the Reproductive Activity in Fish: Neuroendocrine Mechanisms of Reproductive Function in Response to Water Temperature

Fish are poikilotherm and small changes in water temperature can greatly affect physiological processes including reproduction, which is regulated by complex neuroendocrine mechanisms that respond to climatic events. This review provides evidence that anomalous high and low temperature may directly affect reproduction in fish by suppressing the expression of genes in the reproductive neuroendocrine system. The grass puffer, Takifugu alboplumbeus, is an excellent animal model for studying the thermal regulation of reproduction, for they exhibit periodic spawning activities, which are synchronized with seasonal, lunar and daily cycles. In the grass puffer, the expression of the genes encoding gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) 1, kisspeptin, gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) and their receptors were markedly suppressed in the diencephalon of fish exposed to high temperature (28°C) when compared to normal temperature (21°C), followed by the decrease in the pituitary mRNA levels for follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and growth hormone (GH). On the other hand, the exposure to low temperature (14°C) also inhibited the expression of gnrh1, kiss2, gnih and their receptor genes in the brain and fshb, lhb, gh and prl in the pituitary. Taken together, it is plausible that anomalous high and low temperature may be a proximate driver of termination of reproduction by suppressing the activity of the reproductive GnRH/kisspeptin/GnIH system, possibly through direct action of temperature signals at transcription level.

Widespread alterations to hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis signaling underlie high temperature reproductive inhibition in the eurythermal sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus)

Fish experiencing abnormally high or prolonged elevations in temperature can exhibit impaired reproduction, even for species adapted to warm water environments. Such high temperature inhibition of reproduction has been linked to diminished gonadal steroidogenesis, but the mechanisms whereby hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis signaling is impacted by high temperature are not fully understood. Here, we characterized differences in HPG status in adult sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus), a eurythermal salt marsh and estuarine species of eastern North America, exposed for 14 d to temperatures of 27 °C or 37 °C. Males and females at 37 °C had lower gonadosomatic index (GSI) values compared to fish at 27 °C, and females at 37 °C had fewer spawning capable eggs and lower circulating 17β-estradiol (E₂). Gene transcripts encoding gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (gnih) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone-3 (gnrh3) were higher in relative abundance in the hypothalamus of both sexes at 37 °C. While pituitary mRNAs for the β-subunits of follicle-stimulating hormone (fshβ) and luteinizing hormone (lhβ) were lowered only in males at 37 °C, Fsh and Lh receptor mRNA levels in the gonads were at lower relative levels in both the ovary and testis of fish at 37 °C. Females at 37 °C also showed reduced ovarian mRNA levels for steroid acute regulatory protein (star), P450 side-chain cleavage enzyme (cyp11a1), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3βhsd), 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (hsd17β3), and ovarian aromatase (cyp19a1a). Females at the higher 37 °C temperature also had a lower liver expression of mRNAs encoding estrogen receptor α (esr1) and several vitellogenin and choriogenin genes, but elevated mRNA levels for hepatic sex hormone-binding globulin (shbg). Our results substantiate prior findings that exposure of fish to high temperature can inhibit gonadal steroidogenesis and oogenesis, and point to declines in reproductive performance emerging from alterations at several levels of HPG axis signaling including increased hypothalamic Gnih expression, depressed gonadal steroidogenesis, and reduced egg yolk and egg envelope protein production in the liver.

Reproductive biology and recruitment of bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix (Perciformes: Pomatomidae) in the southwestern Atlantic

The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linneus 1766) is captured by industrial, artisanal, and recreational fisheries throughout its distribution range. The reproductive biology of P. saltatrix in the southwestern Atlantic was studied using 1,102 specimens captured by the Brazilian commercial fleet between March 2014 and December 2015. The recruitment period was identified from records of juveniles in experimental beach seine hauls carried out on sandy beaches in the external sector of Guanabara Bay for four years (2012–2015). Based on the reproductive indices and on the macro- and microscopic analyses of the gonads, spawning peaks were identified in autumn and spring. The size at first maturity was estimated at 35.5, 38.3, and 37.4 cm for females, males, and general, respectively. Ovary analyses and measurements of the oocyte diameters indicated that bluefish are multiple spawners with asynchronous oocyte development. The batch fecundity estimate was 202,752.5 eggs and ranged from 9,800.9 to 426,787.0 eggs. The species reproduces throughout the entire study area, but it is more active in the south of Arraial do Cabo. The young-of-the-year were recorded on shallow water in all seasons, with modal peaks in the summer months. The parameters estimated in this study expand and update information on this species, providing important data for the evaluation and fisheries management of the stock of P. saltatrix in the southwestern Atlantic.

From gametogenesis to spawning: How climate-driven warming affects teleost reproductive biology

Ambient temperature modulates reproductive processes, especially in poikilotherms such as teleosts. Consequently, global warming is expected to impact the reproductive function of fish, which has implications for wild population dynamics, fisheries and aquaculture. In this extensive review spanning tropical and cold-water environments, we examine the impact of higher-than-optimal temperatures on teleost reproductive development and physiology across reproductive stages, species, generations and sexes. In doing so, we demonstrate that warmer-than-optimal temperatures can affect every stage of reproductive development from puberty through to the act of spawning, and these responses are mediated by age at spawning and are associated with changes in physiology at multiple levels of the brain-pituitary-gonad axis. Response to temperature is often species-specific and changes with environmental history/transgenerational conditioning, and the amplitude, timing and duration of thermal exposure within a generation. Thermally driven changes to physiology, gamete development and maturation typically culminate in poor sperm and oocyte quality, and/or advancement/delay/inhibition of ovulation/spermiation and spawning. Although the field of teleost reproduction and temperature is advanced in many respects, we identify areas where research is lacking, especially for males and egg quality from "omics" perspectives. Climate-driven warming will continue to disturb teleost reproductive performance and therefore guide future research, especially in the emerging areas of transgenerational acclimation and epigenetic studies, which will help to understand and project climate change impacts on wild populations and could also have implications for aquaculture.

Climate change impacts on fish reproduction are mediated at multiple levels of the brain-pituitary-gonad axis

Anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have generated rapid variations in atmospheric composition which drives major climate changes. Climate change related effects include changes in physico-chemical proprieties of sea and freshwater, such as variations in water temperature, salinity, pH/pCO₂ and oxygen content, which can impact fish critical physiological functions including reproduction. In this context, the main aim of the present review is to discuss how climate change related effects (variation in water temperature and salinity, increases in duration and frequency of hypoxia events, water acidification) would impact reproduction by affecting the neuroendocrine axis (brain-pituitary-gonad axis). Variations in temperature and photoperiod regimes are known to strongly affect sex differentiation and the timing and phenology of spawning period in several fish species. Temperature mainly acts at the level of gonad by interfering with steroidogenesis, (notably on gonadal aromatase activity) and gametogenesis. Temperature is also directly involved in the quality of released gametes and embryos development. Changes in salinity or water acidification are especially associated with reduction of sperm quality and reproductive output. Hypoxia events are able to interact with gonad steroidogenesis by acting on the steroids precursor cholesterol availability or directly on aromatase action, with an impact on the quality of gametes and reproductive success. Climate change related effects on water parameters likely influence also the reproductive behavior of fish. Although the precise mechanisms underlying the regulation of these effects are not always understood, in this review we discuss different hypothesis and propose future research perspectives.

Effects of temperature on the reproductive physiology of female elasmobranchs: The case of the narrownose smooth-hound shark (Mustelus schmitti)

The knowledge of how temperature influences elasmobranchs reproductive physiology allows a better understanding of their reproductive patterns. This study describes the relationship between temperature fluctuations and the plasmatic changes of the sex steroids related to reproduction: testosterone (T), estradiol (E₂) and progesterone (P₄), throughout the female reproductive cycle of the shark Mustelus schmitti. A total of 123 adult females were bi-monthly sampled in Buenos Aires, Argentina, coastal waters. Bottom temperatures were recorded at each sampling point and blood samples were taken from each female for plasma sex steroids measurement. Sex steroid plasma levels were analyzed in relation with maximum follicular diameter (MFD), uterosomatic index (USI, as indicator of pregnancy) and temperature using Generalized Additive Models. Plasmatic E₂ and T increased during follicular growth until MFD reached 1.34 and 1.46 cm, respectively. Peak of T occurred at the follicular stage associated with parturition (MFD, 1.4-1.6 cm), just prior to final maturation and ovulation (MFD, 1.6-2.0 cm). Progesterone significantly increased at this last ovarian phase, while T and E₂ decreased. The increase of USI with pregnancy was associated to a decrease in T and mainly E₂ levels, while P₄ remained unaffected. Prior to ovulation, T plasma levels decreased with temperature below to 13 °C and then increased progressively with a pronounced elevation above 17 °C, while E₂ presented an opposite pattern. Progesterone plasma levels changed with temperature showing a similar pattern to that observed for T. Using M. schmitti shark as model species, this study shows a clear picture of how seawater temperature variations can affect the reproductive physiology in elasmobranch females. A hypothetical mechanism (based on T elevation driven by temperature increase and its connection by feedback with a P₄ rise and parturition/ovulation induction) is proposed as evidence to support that the increase in temperature can trigger reproductive events in elasmobranchs. In addition to its ecological scope, this work contributes to reinforce the relatively scarce general knowledge of elasmobranchs reproductive physiology.

Temperature-induced testicular germ cell loss and recovery in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

Water temperature is a critical external factor influencing gonadal development in fish. This research aimed to study the impact of elevated temperature on testicular germ cell survival and reproductive capacity of Nile tilapia. Male Nile tilapia were exposed to high temperatures of either 36 (HT1) or 37 °C (HT2) for 3000 degree-days (DD) and thereafter returned to the control temperature of 27 °C (CT) for 2200 DD. The deleterious effects on testicular germ and somatic cells were observed histologically, characterised by vacuolisation, atrophy and the loss of spermatogenic cells in testes with a more severe impact of HT2 compared to HT1. Interestingly, serum 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and testosterone (T) levels tended to be higher during the heat treatments than CT. Expression levels of germline-specific genes piwil1, piwil2 and nanos2 and Bcl-2 family genes, bcl-xLb and baxa were significantly reduced during the heat treatment compared to CT, more so in the HT2, while the levels of nanos3 and gfra1 transcripts were only significantly reduced in HT2, implying a significant loss of spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) and spermatogonia in HT2. The effect of HT2 is further evidenced by the significantly reduced sperm density and fertilisation rate compared to CT and HT1 at the end of the recovery period but complete sterility was not induced by HT2. Overall, the present study showed significant effects of HT2 on germ cell survival with histological changes in testes, reduced milt quality, increased 11-KT, and decreased expression of germline-specific genes, SSC marker genes and Bcl-2 family genes in testes which could therefore be potential target genes for sterilisation by genome editing.

Effects of high and low temperature on expression of GnIH, GnIH receptor, GH and PRL genes in the male grass puffer during breeding season

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) is a multifunctional hypophysiotropic neurohormone and has a stimulatory role in the control of reproduction in the grass puffer. To clarify the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying the effect of changes in water temperature on reproduction in fish, we previously revealed that, in parallel to gonadal regression, both low and high temperature significantly decreased the expressions of the genes encoding kisspeptin (kiss2), kisspeptin receptor (kiss2r), gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (gnrh1) in the brain and gonadotropin (GTH) subunits (fshb and lhb) in the pituitary of sexually mature male grass puffer. In this study, we examined the changes in expression of gnih and GnIH receptor gene (gnihr) in the brain and pituitary along with the genes for growth hormone (gh) and prolactin (prl) in the pituitary of male grass puffer exposed to low temperature (14 °C), normal temperature (21 °C, as initial control) and high temperature (28 °C) conditions for 7 days. The levels of gnih and gnihr mRNAs were significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions compared to normal temperature in the brain and pituitary. Similarly, the gh mRNA levels were significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions. The prl mRNAs showed no significant changes at high temperature, whereas drastically decreased at low temperature possibly by dysfunctional cold stress. Taken together, the present results suggest that, in addition to the inhibitory effect of temperature changes on the Kiss2/GnRH1/GTH system, the suppression of GnIH/GH system may also be involved in the termination of reproduction by high temperature at the end of breeding season.

Reproduction of Eutropiichthys vacha (Schilbeidae) in the Ganges River (NW Bangladesh) with special reference to potential influence of climate variability

The Batchwa vacha, Eutropiichthys vacha is commercially important, supporting a viable small- and large-scale fishery throughout the Ganges River, NW Bangladesh. This study provides detail information on reproduction of E. vacha including size at sexual maturity, spawning and peak spawning season, and fecundity based on 734 female specimens through regular monthly sampling using cast net, gill net, and square lift net in the Ganges River during January to December 2016. Also, our study estimated the effects of climate change including temperature and rainfall on reproduction of E. vacha in the Ganges River. For each individual, lengths (total length, TL; standard length, SL) and body weight (BW) were measured with slide caliper and digital balance, respectively. Gonads (ovaries) were collected carefully by ventral dissection of each female specimen and weighed to the nearest 0.01 g accuracy. The gonadosomatic index (GSI % = (GW/BW) ×100), modified gonadosomatic index (MGSI % = (GW/BW - GW) × 100), and Dobriyal index (DI = [Formula: see text]) were calculated to estimate the size at sexual maturity (L₅₀) and spawning season. Based on GSI, MGSI, and DI, the L₅₀ was calculated as 12.5 cm TL for female. The TL₅₀, the TL at which 50% of individuals become mature, was calculated by logistic equation as 12.7 cm. Also, on the basis of higher values of GSI, MGSI, and DI, spawning season was ranged from April to August, with the peak in June-July, signifying the peak spawning season for E. vacha in the Ganges River. The total fecundity (F_T) ranged from 4800 to 77,976 (mean ± SD, 31384 ± 23,747) and was highly correlated with TL and BW. Water temperature during the spawning period ranged from 28 to 34 °C, with an average of 31 °C and there was significant correlation between temperature and GSI. Also, the spawning season coincides with the peak rainfall and there was significant correlation between rainfall and GSI. Additionally, analysis of long data series indicated that annual average air temperature is increasing by 0.0258 °C/year, while the annual average rainfall is decreasing by 3.107 mm/year. Finally, the findings of this study would be very effective to impose specific management for E. vacha in the Ganges River and surrounding ecosystems.

Temperature-induced physiological stress and reproductive characteristics of the migratory seahorse Hippocampus erectus during a thermal stress simulation

Inshore-offshore migration occurs frequently in seahorse species, either because of prey opportunities or because they are driven by reproduction, and variations in water temperature may dramatically change migratory seahorse behavior and physiology. The present study investigated the behavioral and physiological responses of the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus under thermal stress and evaluated the potential effects of different temperatures on its reproduction. The results showed that the thermal tolerance of the seahorses was time dependent. Acute thermal stress (30°C, 2-10 h) increased the basal metabolic rate (breathing rate) and the expression of stress response genes (Hsp genes) significantly and further stimulated seahorse appetite. Chronic thermal treatment (30°C, 4 weeks) led to a persistently higher basal metabolic rate, higher stress response gene expression and higher mortality rates, indicating that the seahorses could not acclimate to chronic thermal stress and might experience massive mortality rates due to excessively high basal metabolic rates and stress damage. Additionally, no significant negative effects on gonad development or reproductive endocrine regulation genes were observed in response to chronic thermal stress, suggesting that seahorse reproductive behavior could adapt to higher-temperature conditions during migration and within seahorse breeding grounds. In conclusion, this simulation experiment indicates that temperature variations during inshore-offshore migration have no effect on reproduction, but promote significantly high basal metabolic rates and stress responses. Therefore, we suggest that the observed high tolerance of seahorse reproduction is in line with the inshore-offshore reproductive migration pattern of lined seahorses.This article has an associated First Person interview with the first author of the paper.

Reproductive gene expression in a coral reef fish exposed to increasing temperature across generations

Reproduction in marine fish is generally tightly linked with water temperature. Consequently, when adults are exposed to projected future ocean temperatures, reproductive output of many species declines precipitously. Recent research has shown that in the common reef fish, Acanthochromis polyacanthus, step-wise exposure to higher temperatures over two generations (parents: +1.5°C, offspring: +3.0°C) can improve reproductive output in the F2 generation compared to F2 fish that have experienced the same high temperatures over two generations (F1 parents: +3.0°C, F2 offspring: +3.0°C). To investigate how a step-wise increase in temperature between generations improved reproductive capacity, we tested the expression of well-known teleost reproductive genes in the brain and gonads of F2 fish using quantitative reverse transcription PCR and compared it among control (+0.0°C for two generations), developmental (+3.0°C in second generation only), step (+1.5°C in first generation and +3.0°C in second generation), and transgenerational (+3.0°C for two generations) treatments. We found that levels of gonadotropin receptor gene expression (Fshr and Lhcgr) in the testes were reduced in developmental and transgenerational temperature treatments, but were similar to control levels in the step treatment. This suggests Fshr and Lhcgr may be involved in regulating male reproductive capacity in A. polyacanthus. In addition, lower Fshb expression in the brain of females in all temperature treatments compared to control, suggests that Fshb expression, which is involved in vitellogenesis, is sensitive to high temperatures. Our results help elucidate key genes that facilitate successful reproduction in reef fishes when they experience a gradual increase in temperature across generations consistent with the trajectory of climate change.

Estrogen therapy offsets thermal impairment of vitellogenesis, but not zonagenesis, in maiden spawning female Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

In female Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), exposure to warm summer temperatures causes a reduction in plasma 17β-estradiol (E2), which impairs downstream vitellogenesis and zonagenesis, and reduces egg fertility and embryo survival. The aim of the present study was to determine whether E2-treatment could offset thermal impairment of endocrine function and maintain egg quality in maiden (first-time-spawning) S. salar reared at 22 °C. Treatment with E2 at 22 °C stimulated vitellogenin (vtg) gene expression and subsequent protein synthesis which promoted oocyte growth and increased egg size relative to untreated fish at 14 and 22 °C. However, E2-treatment at 22 °C was not associated with an increase in egg fertility and embryo survival relative to untreated fish at 22 °C, despite the positive effects of E2-treatment on vitellogenesis and oocyte growth. As there was no evidence to suggest that the estrogen receptor alpha expression was suppressed by high temperature, this could be due to the lack of stimulation on zonagenesis by E2-treatment observed at high temperature during oocyte development. Our results demonstrate that treatment with E2 is not able to maintain zonagenesis or egg quality in maiden S. salar at high temperature, even when vtg gene expression, protein synthesis and subsequent oocyte growth is promoted. This implies that the mechanisms regulating zonagenesis, but not vitellogenesis are impaired at elevated temperature in female S. salar broodstock, and highlights the remarkable complexity of thermally induced endocrine disruption in fish.

Effects of GnRHa treatment during vitellogenesis on the reproductive physiology of thermally challenged female Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Tasmanian Atlantic salmon (S. salar) broodstock can experience temperatures above 20 °C, which impairs reproductive development and inhibits ovulation. The present study investigated the prolonged use of gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) during vitellogenesis as a means of maintaining endocrine function and promoting egg quality at elevated temperature in maiden and repeat spawning S. salar. GnRHa-treatment during vitellogenesis did not compensate for the negative effects of thermal challenge on the timing of ovulation, egg size, egg fertility or embryo survival in any fish maintained at 22 °C relative to 14 °C. The lack of effectiveness was reflected by the endocrine data, as plasma follicle stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone levels were not different between treated and untreated groups at 22 °C. Furthermore, plasma testosterone and E2 levels were unchanged in GnRHa-treated fish at 22 °C, and plasma levels were generally lower in both groups maintained at 22 °C relative to 14 °C. Transcription of vitellogenin, and zona pellucida B and C was not enhanced in GnRHa-treated fish relative to untreated fish at 22 °C, presumably due to observed suppression of plasma E2. These results indicate that thermal impairment of reproduction is likely to occur on multiple levels, and is difficult to overcome via hormonal manipulation.

Effects of altered photoperiod and temperature on expression levels of gonadotrophin subunit mRNAs in the female stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis

Differential effects of photoperiod and temperature on the temporal modulation of gonadotrophin subunit genes (glycoprotein α, gpα), follicle-stimulating hormone β (fshβ) and luteinizing hormone β (lhβ) expression were investigated in the stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis. Female H. fossilis were exposed to varying photoperiod and temperature conditions for 14 and 28 days in the early preparatory phase of the annual reproductive cycle. Gonadotrophin subunit gene expression, gonado-somatic index (I_G ), ovarian histology and plasma steroid hormone levels were evaluated. The exposure of H. fossilis to long photoperiod (LP) of 16 h light or high temperature (HT) at 28 ± 2° C (mean ± s.e.), alone or in combination, resulted in significant increases in gpα, fshβ and lhβ messenger (m)RNA levels, I_G , plasma oestradiol-17β (E₂ ), testosterone (T) and progesterone (P₄ ) levels. The ovaries were filled with advanced yolky oocytes. On the other hand, the short photoperiod (SP) of 8 h light exposure decreased the transcript levels with higher inhibition in the normal temperature (NT) group at 18 ± 2° C (mean ± s.e.) than the HT group at 28 ± 2° C. Furthermore, the inhibition reached the highest level in total darkness (TD) of 24 h light deprivation under NT conditions at 18 ± 2° C. Consequently, the SP and TD treatments inhibited the I_G , plasma E₂ and T levels and ovarian development. The exposure to high temperature at 28 ± 2° C also modified the short photoperiod effect by elevating plasma E₂ level. The plasma T level changed only mildly while the plasma P₄ level showed the greatest fluctuations; the level reached the nadir in the SP + HT group but increased in the SP + NT group on day 28. A two-way ANOVA of the data showed differential effects of photoperiod and temperature; photoperiod produced a highly significant effect on fshβ expression while temperature had a highly significant effect both on lhβ and gpα levels. Thus, the differential expression of the gpα by the environmental variables ensures temporal synchronization of ovarian development and spawning.

Effect of water temperature on reproductive performance and offspring quality of rare minnow, Gobiocypris rarus

Water temperature plays a significant role in the reproductive processes of temperate fishes. In the present study, the effects of water temperature on the reproductive performance and offspring quality of rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) were evaluated by cultured parent fish at different temperature (18～30℃) in a 2-month trial. The results revealed that rare minnows could spawn continuously within the range from 18℃ to 30℃, and these at 24℃ and 27℃ spawned every 3-4 days. Batch size of rare minnow increased with increasing water temperature, while egg production increased with increasing water temperature and then decreased at 30℃. High water temperature (30℃) had significantly adverse effects on fertilization rate and hatching rate (P<0.05). It was found that the oocyte growth at 18℃, 21℃, and 30℃ were slower than those at 24℃ and 27℃. Histologic analysis further showed that low temperature (18℃ and 21℃) slowed down vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation, while high temperature (30℃) had suppressive effects on oocyte maturation and ovulation. Based on present results, it was concluded that 24-27℃ was optimal breeding temperature for rare minnows and water temperature higher than 30℃ resulting from climate change would pose a threat to its wild populations.

Temperature affects sexual maturation through the control of kisspeptin, kisspeptin receptor, GnRH and GTH subunit gene expression in the grass puffer during the spawning season

Water temperature is an environmental factor of primary importance that influences reproductive function in fish. To understand the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying the regulation of reproduction by temperature, we examined changes in expression of genes encoding kisspeptin (kiss2), kisspeptin receptor (kiss2r) and three gonadotropin-releasing hormones (gnrh1, gnrh2 and gnrh3) in the brain and genes encoding gonadotropin (GTH) subunits (gpa, fshb and lhb) in the pituitary of grass puffer exposed to a low temperature (14°C), normal temperature (21°C) and high temperature (28°C) for 7days. In addition, the plasma levels of cortisol were examined after exposed to three temperature conditions. The gonadosomatic index was significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions. The levels of kiss2 and kiss2r mRNAs were significantly decreased at both low and high temperature conditions compared to normal temperature (control) condition. gnrh1 but not gnrh2 were significantly decreased in both temperature conditions, while gnrh3 showed a decreasing tendency in low temperature. Consequently, the levels of fshb and lhb mRNAs were significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions. Interestingly, the plasma levels of cortisol were significantly increased in low temperature but remain unchanged in high temperature, suggesting that the fish were under stress in the low temperature conditions but not in the high temperature conditions. Taken together, the present results indicate that anomalous temperature have an inhibitory effect on reproductive function through suppressing kiss2/kiss2r/gnrh1/fshb and lhb expression and these changes may occur in a normal physiological response as well as in a malfunctional stress response.

Effects of increasing temperature due to aquatic climate change on the self-fertility and the sexual development of the hermaphrodite fish, Kryptolebias marmoratus

In order to assess the effects of increasing temperature on the reproductive performance of fish, different thermal conditions (i.e., 25.0, 26.5, 27.5, 28.5, 30.0 °C) were used in this study and the self-fertilizing hermaphrodite fish, Kryptolebias marmoratus, was exposed to these different thermal conditions. During an exposure period of 30 to 150 days, the gonadosomatic index (GSI), gonadal development, the levels of plasma 17β-estradial (E2) and testosterone (T), hepatic vitellogenin (VTG) mRNA abundance, and the number of self-fertilized eggs were analyzed. This study confirmed that a high water temperature above 27.5 °C led to the suppression of self-fertility of hermaphroditic fish from 30 days after exposure. The oocyte quality and maturation would be affected by the disruption of hepatic VTG synthesis at a high water temperature of 30 °C, which resulted in the reduced the self-fertility in K. marmoratus. Consequently, this study suggests that elevated water temperature due to aquatic climate change prior to sexual maturation and the onset of spawning can lead to the reproductive dysfunction of hermaphroditic K. marmoratus.

Seasonal changes and endocrine regulation of pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) spermatogenesis in the wild

The endocrine mechanisms that regulate spermatogenesis and their interaction with environmental cues have been poorly studied compared with oogenesis in fish. The aim of this work was to study the spermatogenesis in pejerrey under the influence of photoperiod and water temperature fluctuation in the wild, evaluating the transcript levels of brain Gnrh variants and cyp19a1b, pituitary Gth subunits, gonadal Gth receptors, 11β-hsd, and 11-KT plasma levels. Males at spermiogenic stage were observed during spring and autumn, under a photoperiod above 11h of light and a water temperature below 23 °C. Most arrested males were observed in summer when water temperatures increased above 23 °C. Males at spermatogonial stage were mainly observed in autumn, while most males at spermatocytary stage were caught in winter. An increase of gnrh-I, cyp19a1b, fshb, gpha and 11β-hsd transcripts and 11-KT plasma levels was observed during spermatogonial and/or spermatocytary stage (early spermatogenesis). The spermiogenic stage was associated to the maximum gnrh-I gene expression level and a significant increase of Gth receptors transcripts, being this fact more evident for lhcgr. During this last gonadal stage, cyp19a1b transcript level remained high, while fshb mRNA and 11-KT plasma levels showed a significant decreased compared to that occurred at the spermatocytary stage. Also, gphα and 11β-hsd gene expression levels fell during spermiation up to similar values to those observed in arrested males. A significant correlation between 11-KT and gnrh-I, cyp19a1b, gphα, fshb, 11β-hsd transcripts, and the number of spermatocytes was observed during spermatogenesis. All these findings suggested that in pejerrey, the spermatocyte proliferation occurs mainly during winter under the stimulation of 11-KT induced by FSH through the stimulation of specific enzymes, including the 11β-hsd while spermiation occurs after photoperiod increase and with temperatures of the water below 23 °C, through the stimulation of gnrh-I, cyp19a1b and lhcgr.

Environmental impacts on the gonadotropic system in female Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) during vitellogenesis: Photothermal effects on pituitary gonadotropins, ovarian gonadotropin receptor expression, plasma sex steroids and oocyte growth

The gonadotropic system and ovarian growth and development were studied during vitellogenesis in female Atlantic salmon subjected to either simulated natural photoperiod and ambient water temperature (NL-amb), or an accelerating photoperiod (short day of LD8:16 from May 10) combined with either warmed (ca 2°C above ambient; 8L-warm) or cooled water (ca 2°C below ambient; 8L-cold) from May to September. Monthly samples were collected from 10 females/group for determination of transcript levels of pituitary gonadotropin subunits (fshb and lhb) and ovarian gonadotropin receptors (fshr and lhr), plasma sex steroids (testosterone: T and estradiol-17β: E2), gonadosomatic index (GSI) and oocyte size. Short day in combination with either warmed or cooled water induced an earlier increase in pituitary fshb and lhb levels compared with NL-amb controls, and advanced ovarian growth and the seasonal profiles of T, E2. By contrast only minor effects were seen of the photothermal treatments on ovarian fshr and lhr. The 8L-cold had earlier increase in fshb, lhb and E2, but similar oocyte and gonadal growth as 8L-warm, suggesting that the 8L-cold group tried to compensate for the lower water temperature during the period of rapid gonadal growth by increasing fshb and E2 production. Both the 8L-warm and 8L-cold groups showed incomplete ovulation in a proportion of the females, possibly due to the photoperiod advancement resulting in earlier readiness of spawning occurring at a higher ambient temperature, or due to some reproductive dysfunction caused by photothermal interference with normal neuroendocrine regulation of oocyte development and maturation.

High temperature-induced sterility in the female Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus

High temperature treatments induce germ cell loss in gonads of vertebrate animals, including fish. It could be a reliable source for induction of sterility if the treatments led to a permanent loss of germ cells. Here we report that heat treatment at 37 °C for 45-60 days caused a complete loss of germ cells in female Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, and that sterility was achieved in fish at all stages of their life cycle. Unlike previous observations, germ cells did not repopulate even after returning them to the water at control conditions suggesting permanent depletion of germ cells. Gonadal somatic cells immunopositive for 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) were clustered at one end of the germ cell depleted gonads close to the blood vessel. Serum level of testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone, and 17β-estradiol was significantly decreased in sterile fish compared to control. Body weight of sterile fish was higher than control fish at the end of experiment. Our observations of increased growth and permanent sterilization in the high temperature-treated fish suggest that this method could be an appropriate and eco-friendly tool for inducing sterility in fish with a higher thermal tolerance.

High water temperature impairs ovarian activity and gene expression in the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis in female red seabream during the spawning season

Temperature plays a pivotal role in the control of seasonal reproduction in temperate fish species. It is well known that temperatures that exceed a certain threshold impair gonadal development, maturation, and spawning. However, the endocrine mechanisms that underlie these effects are poorly understood. We evaluated the effect of high water temperature on the brain-pituitary-gonadal (B-P-G) axis of a perciform fish, red seabream, Pagrus (Chrysophrys) major during its spawning season (April-May). Fish were reared at either high (24 °C: H-group) or optimal/control (17 °C: C-group) temperatures for 5 or 10 d. After 5 d, the transcript abundance of gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1 (GnRH1) in the brain and GnRH receptor (GnRH-R) and FSH-β in the pituitary were significantly lower in H-group than in C-group. Conversely, there was no difference in pituitary LH-β mRNA levels, serum concentrations of estradiol-17β (E₂), or the gonadosomatic index (GSIs) between H- and C-groups on Day 5. After 10 d, the ovaries of all H-group fish had completely regressed and were filled with only perinucleolar stage primary oocytes and atretic oocytes. The brain GnRH1 expression, pituitary GnRH-R and pituitary LH-β expression, serum E₂ concentrations, and the GSI were significantly lower in the H-group on Day 10. Our results suggest that high water temperature is the proximate driver of the termination of the spawning season of female red seabream. The effect appears to be mediated by suppression of gene expression in the B-P-G axis.

Temperature differentially regulates the two kisspeptin systems in the brain of zebrafish

Kisspeptins encoded by the kiss1 and kiss2 genes play an important role in reproduction through the stimulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion by activating their receptors (KissR1 EU047918 and KissR2 EU047917). To understand the mechanism through which temperature affects reproduction, we examined kiss1 and kiss2 and their respective receptor (kissr1 and kissr2) gene expression in the brain of male zebrafish exposed to a low temperature (15°C), normal temperature (27°C), and high temperature (35°C) for 7-days. kiss1 mRNA levels in the brain were significantly increased (2.9-fold) in the low temperature compared to the control (27°C), while no noticeable change was observed in the high temperature conditions. Similarly, kissr1 mRNA levels were significantly increased (1.5-2.2-folds) in the low temperature conditions in the habenula, the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle, oculomotor nucleus, and the interpeduncular nucleus. kiss2 mRNA levels were significantly decreased (0.5-fold) in the low and high temperature conditions, concomitant with kissr2 mRNA levels (0.5-fold) in the caudal zone of the periventricular hypothalamus and the posterior tuberal nucleus. gnrh3 but not gnrh2 mRNA levels were also decreased (0.5-fold) in the low and high temperature conditions. These findings suggest that while the kiss1/kissr1 system is sensitive to low temperature, the kiss2/kissr2 system is sensitive to both extremes of temperature, which leads to failure in reproduction.

Effects of global warming on fish reproductive endocrine axis, with special emphasis in pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis

The ongoing of global warming trend has led to an increase in temperature of several water bodies. Reproduction in fish, compared with other physiological processes, only occurs in a bounded temperature range; therefore, small changes in water temperature could significantly affect this process. This review provides evidence that fish reproduction may be directly affected by further global warming and that abnormal high water temperature impairs the expression of important genes throughout the brain-pituitary-gonad axis. In all fishes studied, gonads seem to be the organ more readily damaged by heat treatments through the inhibition of the gene expression and subsequent synthesis of different gonadal steroidogenic enzymes. In view of the feedback role of sex steroids upon the synthesis and release of GnRH and GtHs in fish, it is possible that the inhibition observed at brain and pituitary levels in treated fish is consequence of the sharp decrease in plasma steroids levels. Results of in vitro studies on the inhibition of pejerrey gonad aromatase expression by high temperature corroborate that ovary functions are directly disrupted by high temperature independently of the brain-pituitary axis. For the reproductive responses obtained in laboratory fish studies, it is plausible to predict changes in the timing and magnitude of reproductive activity or even the total failure of spawning season may occur in warm years, reducing annual reproductive output and affecting future populations.

Extrahypophyseal expression of gonadotropin subunits in pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis and effects of high water temperatures on their expression

It has been traditionally accepted that the gonadotropins (GtHs), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), are synthesized and secreted only by the pituitary. However, the presence of theses hormones in extrapituitary tissues has been demonstrated in mammals, and more recently also in fish. In this study, we cloned the cDNAs and characterized the expression of FSH-β, LH-β, and glycoprotein hormone α (GPH-α) subunits from brain and gonads of male and female pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis at different stages of gonadal maturation. In situ hybridization revealed that, in addition to their classical location in pituitary cells, the three GtH transcripts were also located in the gonads. FSH-β and GPH-α subunits were found in the cytoplasm of oogonia, previtellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes in ovaries. LH-β expression was detected in previtellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes but not in oogonia. In males, the three subunits were expressed in spermatogonia and to a lesser extent in spermatocytes. Exposure of fish to high water temperatures that impair pejerrey reproduction also induced a decrease of extrahypophyseal expression of GtH subunits.

Disruption of the secretion and action of 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one in response to a rise in temperature in the Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus. Consequences on oocyte maturation and ovulation

Plasma levels of 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20βP), and the timing of ovulation were investigated in female Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) reared at 5°C and at 10°C during the pre-spawning period. The effects of switching from 5 to 10°C, and from 10 to 5°C were also investigated. 17,20βP plasma levels were higher at 5°C than at 10°C. A switch from 10 to 5°C stimulated 17,20βP secretion, whereas a switch from 5 to 10°C had the opposite effect. Ovulation occurred spontaneously in the females kept at 5°C, and in those switched from 10 to 5°C. In contrast, ovulation was inhibited in females reared at 10°C, and in those switched from 5 to 10°C. Oocyte maturation at 5°C and at 10°C in the presence of LH or of 17,20βP was also investigated in vitro using donor females reared at 5 or 10°C. Both LH and 17,20βP stimulated oocyte maturation more effectively in oocytes incubated at 5°C than at 10°C. At both incubation temperatures, the rearing temperature of the donor females had a significant impact on their responsiveness to LH stimulation, but had no effect on their responsiveness to 17,20βP stimulation. In addition to the inhibition of LH secretion, which had already been reported, the results reported here show that in Arctic charr raising the temperature above the physiological range reduces both follicular responsiveness to LH stimulation and the sensitivity of oocytes to 17,20βP stimulation.

Vulnerability of pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis populations to climate change in pampean lakes of Argentina

The vulnerability of the pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis population in Lake Chasicó was assessed under different climate change conditions. During the sampling period, the water temperature was adequate for fish reproduction and to sustain an adequate sex ratio. Climate-driven higher temperatures, however, may severely distort population structure and cause drastic reduction or local extinction of stocks. Lake Chasicó can be classified as eutrophic with clear waters and cyanobacteria that regularly cause fish mortality were identified as Nodularia spumigena and Oscillatoria sp. Global warming may strengthen the effects of eutrophication (e.g. toxic blooms or anoxia). Since many Cyanophyta species tolerate higher temperatures better than other algae, toxic blooms could increase. Furthermore, cyanobacteria have low nutritional value and could decouple the low-diversity food web. Lake Chasicó has currently the salinity optimum (c. 20) for the development of the early life-history stages of O. bonariensis. Climate change, however, is likely to amplify the intensity of droughts or inundations. Floods can endanger O. bonariensis development due to its sub-optimal growth at low salinity and droughts could increase lake salinity and also temperature and nutrient concentration. In order to reduce some of the effects of climate change on the O. bonariensis population in Lake Chasicó, integrated basin management based on an eco-hydrological approach is proposed.

Implications of climate change for the reproductive capacity and survival of New World silversides (family Atherinopsidae)

The New World silversides (family Atherinopsidae) are found in marine, estuarine and inland waters of North, Central and South America, where they are ecologically important as forage fishes and sometimes economically important for commercial and recreational fisheries. This report reviews the knowledge of the reproductive attributes of temperate and subtropical atherinopsids in relation to temperature and discusses the potential effects of climate change on their reproduction and adaptive responses. Their reproductive cycles are primarily entrained by photoperiod with high temperature acting as a limiting factor. They are generally multiple spawners which release successive batches of eggs in spring, but some species can spawn also in autumn and even summer when temperatures do not increase excessively. The decoupling of temperature patterns and photoperiod with further global warming and associated asymmetric thermal fluctuations could lead to spawning at times or temperatures that are unsuitable for larval development and growth. Many members of this family show temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), where the phenotypic sex of an individual is determined partly or wholly by the temperature experienced during gonadal sex differentiation, and high-temperature induced germ cell degeneration and decreased fertility. The predicted short-term reproductive responses of atherinopsids to climate change therefore include acceleration, shortening or overall disruption of spawning activity, and also more subtle, but nonetheless equally population-threatening, dysfunctions such as highly skewed sex ratios and partial or total loss of fertility. In the case of species with TSD, asymmetric thermal fluctuations could also cause larvae to encounter temperatures lower than normal during early development and be feminized. Such dysfunctions have been documented already in natural populations but are confined so far to landlocked, inland water habitats, perhaps because they impose more severe thermal fluctuations and limitations to migration and dispersal. The severity and recurrence of these dysfunctions with further climate change will depend both on the magnitude, speed and pattern of change and on how much (or how fast) physiological and behavioural traits can evolve to match the new conditions imposed by the climate, which is largely unknown. In this regard, compelling evidence is shown that numerous traits, including the sex determination system, are capable of rapid evolution and could mitigate the negative effects of temperature increases on population viability in atherinopsids.

Temperature and salmonid reproduction: implications for aquaculture

Fish reproduction is likely to be affected by increasing water temperatures arising from climate change. Normal changes in environmental temperature have the capacity to affect endocrine function and either advance or retard gametogenesis and maturation, but above-normal temperatures have deleterious effects on reproductive processes. In Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, exposure to elevated temperature during gametogenesis impairs both gonadal steroid synthesis and hepatic vitellogenin production, alters hepatic oestrogen receptor dynamics and ultimately results in reduced maternal investment and gamete viability. Exposure to high temperature during the maturational phase impairs gonadal steroidogenesis, delaying or inhibiting the preovulatory shift from androgen to maturation-inducing steroid production. There are also deleterious effects on reproductive development of female broodstock of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus when they are exposed to elevated temperature. Less is known about temperature effects on male fishes but inhibition of spermiation has been observed in S. salar and O. mykiss. Among wild stocks, the response to elevated temperature will involve behavioural thermoregulation with consequent change in geographical ranges and the possibility of local extinctions in some regions. For domesticated stocks, containment in the culture environment precludes behavioural thermoregulation and aquaculturists will be required to develop adaptive strategies in order to maintain productivity. The most direct strategy is to manage the thermal environment using one or more of a range of developing aquaculture technologies. Alternatively, there is potential to mitigate the effects of elevated temperature on reproductive processes through endocrine therapies designed to augment or restore natural endocrine function. Studies largely on S. salar have demonstrated the capacity for synthetic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone to offset the inhibitory effects of elevated temperature on maturational events in both sexes, but the potential for hormone therapy to provide protection during gametogenesis is still largely unexplored.
