Brain functional connectivity in hyperthyroid patients: systematic review

Introduction

Functional connectivity (FC) is the correlation between brain regions' activities, studied through neuroimaging techniques like fMRI. It helps researchers understand brain function, organization, and dysfunction. Hyperthyroidism, characterized by high serum levels of free thyroxin and suppressed thyroid stimulating hormone, can lead to mood disturbance, cognitive impairment, and psychiatric symptoms. Excessive thyroid hormone exposure can enhance neuronal death and decrease brain volume, affecting memory, attention, emotion, vision, and motor planning.

Methods

We conducted thorough searches across Google Scholar, PubMed, Hinari, and Science Direct to locate pertinent articles containing original data investigating FC measures in individuals diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.

Results

The systematic review identified 762 articles, excluding duplicates and non-matching titles and abstracts. Four full-text articles were included in this review. In conclusion, a strong bilateral hippocampal connection in hyperthyroid individuals suggests a possible neurobiological influence on brain networks that may affect cognitive and emotional processing.

[Structural Equation Modeling for Quality of Life of Mothers of Children with Developmental Disabilities: Focusing on the Self-Help Model]

PURPOSE

This study aimed to construct and test a predictive model for the quality of life (QOL) in mothers of children with developmental disabilities (DB). The hypothesized model included severity of illness, distress, uncertainty, self-help, and parenting efficacy as influencing factors, QOL as a consequence based on the Braden's Self-Help Model.

METHODS

The data were collected through a direct and online surveys from 206 mothers in 8 locations, including welfare or daycare centers, developmental treatment centers, and The Parents' Coalition for the Disabled located in two provinces of Korea. Data were analysed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and AMOS 21.0 program.

RESULTS

The fit indices of the predictive model satisfied recommended levels; χ² = 165.79 (p < .001), normed χ² (χ²/df) = 2.44, RMR = .04, RMSEA= .08, GFI = .90, AGFI = .85, NFI = .91, TLI = .93, CFI = .95. Among the variables, distress (β = - .46, p < .001), parenting efficacy (β = .22, p < .001), and self-help (β = .17, p = .018) had direct effects on QOL. Severity of illness (β = - .61, p = .010) and uncertainty (β = - .08, p = .014) showed indirect effects. The explanatory power of variables was 61.0%.

CONCLUSION

The study results confirm the utility of Braden's Self-Help Model. They provide a theoretical basis for improving QOL in mothers of children with DB. Nursing intervention strategies that can relieve mothers' distress and uncertainty related to disease and enhance parenting efficacy and self-help behavior should be considered.

Can Music Therapy Improve the Quality of Life of Institutionalized Elderly People?

INTRODUCTION

The current population has new characteristics that require changes to be made in the public health system. In the case of the elderly, the concrete aspects of their health must be known to improve the system, in search of a better quality of life and as much independence as possible.

METHOD

The aim of this study was to verify the efficiency of a music therapy program with institutionalized elderly participants to avoid depressive symptoms and improve social interaction and creativity. This is a group case study that uses a pretest-post-test descriptive design. The program was divided into sixteen sessions, two sessions each week. As inclusion and exclusion criteria, physical dependency and cognitive state were used.

RESULTS

The results present an improvement in the physical dimensions of quality of life and an increase in creativity and social interaction. It is recommended that the sessions in the program, aiming to achieve a greater efficiency, are extended because the elderly have very ingrained habits and routines that are very hard to eliminate.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

Music therapy, a non-pharmacological and worthwhile treatment, is a therapeutic option with proven benefits. Music therapy has the potential to improve health and quality of life in the elderly and also foster the amelioration of various chronic illnesses, such as depression.

Early Life Stress and Brain Plasticity: From Alterations of Brain Morphology to Development of Psychopathology

Advances in our understanding of the genetics of mental disorders (MD) have contributed to a better understanding of their pathophysiology. Nonetheless, several questions and doubts remain. Recent research has focused on the role of the environment in developing mental disorders, and the advent of neuroscientific methodologies has opened up new avenues of inquiry. However, the mechanism by which childhood stress affects neurodevelopment via mechanisms, such as gene-environment interactions and epigenetic regulation leading to diseases in adulthood, is unclear. This paper aims to review the evidence on the role of early life stress and parental psychopathology in the pathophysiology and clinical expression of MD. Methodology: The study will conduct a comprehensive systematic review using medical search terms (MeSH). Electronic searches for published studies will be performed using the MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, Scopus, PsychINFO, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. We will look for research on the neuroplasticity effects of early life stress on development and review articles that evaluate cognitive functions and the development of psychopathology and MD. Before identifying full-text articles, several studies will be filtered based on titles, abstracts, keywords, and synonyms. Publications to be included in the review will be assessed for quality and consistency before inclusion. Data will be extracted independently and duplicated by two authors from each eligible study to ensure consistency between reviews. All databases will be searched from inception until July 2021 and will be limited to human studies. The search will be limited only to publication in the English language and any publication that can be converted to English. Discussion and Conclusions: The findings of this review will meticulously articulate the effects of childhood adversity, such as ELS and parental psychopathology on cognitive development and neuroplasticity.
