An ionization chamber for the dosimetry of 14 MeV neutron beams

Cell death (apoptosis) in the mouse small intestine after low doses: effects of dose-rate, 14.7 MeV neutrons, and 600 MeV (maximum energy) neutrons

The production of dead (apoptotic) cells by low doses of gamma-rays was independent of dose-rate between 0.27 and 450 cGy per min. The r.b.e. for doses of 14.7 MeV neutrons between 1 and 15 cGy was about 4, and for neutrons generated by bombarding a beryllium target with 600 MeV protons the r.b.e. was about 2.7. The dose-incidence curves for all three radiation types reached a plateau at about 3-4 dead cells per crypt section, and this occurred at about 20-40 cGy of gamma-rays. These curves are compatible with exponential survival of the cell population at risk (D0 of 24 cGy for gamma-rays, 6 cGy for 14.7 MeV neutrons and 9 cGy for 600 MeV neutrons). Since the dose-response is exponential there is no indication of much higher r.b.e. values at very low doses, a point of concern in radiation protection. The spatial distribution of dead cells in the crypt was similar after doses of gamma-rays or neutrons, indicating that the same population of target cells was affected in both cases.

Tolerance of rodent tails to necrosis after "daily" fractionated X rays or D-T neutrons

The rat tail has been used as a model system to study the necrosis of an organized tissue following fractionated doses of collimated D-T neutrons or 290 kV X rays. RBE values for tail tolerance - 10 per cent of tails necrosing after the early skin reactions - rise from about 1-7 (single doses) to about 3-1 (16 fractions in 22 days). Neutron tolerance doses are almost independent of fractionation from 2 to 16 fractions. The tissues at risk are shown to be rather hypoxic. Early skin reaction levels can be used to predict the fraction of tails that will necrose. Early peak reactions for a given fraction of necrotic tails were slightly higher for neutrons than for X rays, and this difference was consistent for all the dose fractionation schedules employed.

A comparison for use in radiotherapy of neutron beams generated with 16 and 42 MeV deuterons on beryllium

The physical and radiobiological properties of two neutron beams have been compared. The beams were generated by deuterons of 16 MeV at Hammersmith Hospital and 42 MeV at Harwell, in both cases falling on a Be/Cu target. The dose-rate and depth-dose characteristics at the higher energy were found to be superior to those at the lower energy. Collimation and shielding at the higher energy are facilitated by the greater degree of forward-peaking and by the fact that a higher dose-rate allows longer collimators to be used. Attenuation in iron was found to be similar at the two energies. The radiobiological properties of the two neutron beams are very similar. There is a difference of about 20 per cent in RBE for effects on mammalian tissues for doses between 300 and 2,000 rad of neutrons. The OER and the sparing effect of two large fractions are the same for the two beams.

The use of a calorimeter for neutron dosimetry

The dose given to a polythene energy absorber in the radiation field from a 14 MeV neutron generator has been measured calorimetrically. The calorimeter was calibrated by giving the energy absorber a known dose of gamma-rays. The dose measured in this way was compared with that determined with a polythene-ethylene ionization chamber, and the two results agreed to better than 1%, though the estimated uncertainties on the calorimeter and ionization chamber results were each about 4%. This result can be used to determine a value of the ratio Wn/We, for 14 MeV neutrons in ethylene, where Wn is the W value for the charged particles generated in the neutron field in ethylene, and We is the W value for electrons in the same gas. The measured value of Wn/We was found to be 1.07 plus or minus 3.9%. The significance of the 'thermal defect' in polythene is discussed.
