Abstract
Iron microparticles were coated with polypyrrole in situ during the chemical oxidation of pyrrole with ammonium peroxydisulfate in aqueous medium. A series of hybrid organic/inorganic core-shell materials were prepared with 30-76 wt% iron content. Polypyrrole coating was revealed by scanning electron microscopy, and its molecular structure and completeness were proved by FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. The composites of polypyrrole/carbonyl iron were obtained as powders and characterized with respect to their electrical properties. Their resistivity was monitored by the four-point van der Pauw method under 0.01-10 MPa pressure. In an apparent paradox, the resistivity of composites increased from the units Ω cm for neat polypyrrole to thousands Ω cm for the highest iron content despite the high conductivity of iron. This means that composite conductivity is controlled by the electrical properties of the polypyrrole matrix. The change of sample size during the compression was also recorded and provides a parameter reflecting the mechanical properties of composites. In addition to conductivity, the composites displayed magnetic properties afforded by the presence of iron. The study also illustrates the feasibility of the polypyrrole coating on macroscopic objects, demonstrated by an iron nail, and offers potential application in the corrosion protection of iron. The differences in the morphology of micro- and macroscopic polypyrrole objects are described.

Abstract
High-performance flexible actuators, integral components of soft robotics, hold promise for advancing applications in safe human-robot interactions, healthcare, and various other fields. Notable among these actuators are flexible electrochemical systems, recognized for their merits in low-voltage manipulation, rapid response speed, and cost-effectiveness. However, the optimization of output strain, response speed, and stability presents a significant challenge in this domain. Despite the application of diverse electrochemically active materials to enhance actuation performance, a critical need persists for corresponding electrical-mechanical models to comprehensively grasp actuation mechanisms. In this study, we introduce a novel electrochemical actuator that utilizes conductive polymer ionogel as active electrodes. This ionogel exhibits exceptional properties, including high conductivity, flexibility, and electrochemical activity. Our electrochemical actuators exhibit noteworthy bending strain capabilities and rapid response rates, achieving frequencies up to 10 Hz at a modest voltage of 1 V. An analytical model integrating ion migration and dynamic processes has been established to elucidate actuator behavior. Simulation results highlight that electrodes characterized by low resistance and high capacitance are optimal for simultaneous enhancement of bending strain and blocking force. However, the augmentation of Young's modulus, while increasing blocking force, compromises bending strain. Furthermore, a larger aspect ratio proves beneficial for unidirectional stress output, leading to increased bending strain, while actuator blocking force diminishes with greater length. These findings underscore the intricate interplay between material properties and dimensions in optimizing the performance of flexible electrochemical actuators. This work provides important practical and theoretical guidance for the manufacture of high-performance flexible actuators and the search for new smart materials.

Abstract
The current research focused on the super capacitive behavior of organic conducting polymer, i.e., polypyrrole (PPy) and its composites with gum arabic (GA) prepared via inverse emulsion polymerization. The synthesized composites material was analyzed by different analytical techniques, such as UV-visible, FTIR, TGA, XRD, and SEM. The UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy clearly show the successful insertion of GA into PPy matrix. The TGA analysis shows high thermal stability for composites than pure PPy. The XRD and SEM analysis show the crystalline and amorphous structures and overall morphology of the composites is more compact and mesoporous as compared to the pure PPy. The electrochemical properties of modified solid state supercapacitors established on pure polypyrrole (PPy), polypyrrole/gum arabic (PPy/GA) based composites were investigated through cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD). The specific capacitance of the PPy modified gold electrode is impressive (~168 F/g). The specific capacitance of PPy/GA 1 electrode has been increased to 368 F/g with a high energy density and power density (~73 Wh/kg), and (~599 W/kg) respectively.

Abstract
In this work, we synthesized electroactive and degradable microgels based on biomacromolecular building blocks, which enable the controlled release of therapeutic drugs. Functional chitosan-poly(hydroquinone) (Ch:PHQ) microgels exhibiting redox-active and pH-sensitive properties were synthesized by an oxidative polymerization in an inverse miniemulsion system. Physically crosslinked microgels were formed by polymerization of hydroquinone in the presence of chitosan through the formation of hydrogen bonds between PHQ and Ch. A series of microgel samples with variable Ch : PHQ ratios were synthesized. These obtained microgels exhibit pH-responsive properties due to the protonation/deprotonation of amino-groups of chitosan in the microgel system. Poly(hydroquinone) is a redox-active polymer exhibiting a two-electron/proton-transfer behavior and conveys this property to the microgels as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the microgels can be switched by electrochemical means: they swell in the oxidized state or shrink in the reduced state. In the presence of urea or lysozyme, the microgels undergo a fast degradation due to the disruption of hydrogen bonds acting as physical crosslinks in the microgel networks or due to the cleavage of glucosidic linkages of the incorporated chitosan scaffold, respectively. Doxorubicin (DOX), an anticancer drug, could be effectively encapsulated into the microgels and released in the presence of an enzyme, indicating that these biodegradable microgels could be used as drug delivery vehicles for tumor cells.

Abstract
PEDOT nanowires (NWs) directly grown on the conducting electrode of quartz resonators enable an advanced electrogravimetric analysis of their charge storage behavior. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and its coupling with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ac-electrogravimetry or AC-EG) were used complementarily and reveal that TBA+, BF4- and ACN participate in the charge compensation process with different kinetics and quantity. BF4- anions were dominant in terms of concentration over TBA+ cations and the anion transfer results in the exclusion of the solvent molecules. TBA+ concentration variation in the electrode was small compared to that of the BF4- counterpart. However, Mw of TBA+ is much higher than BF4- (242.3 vs. 86.6 g·mol-1). Thus, TBA+ cations' gravimetric contribution to the EQCM response was more significant than that of BF4-. Additional contribution of ACN with an opposite flux direction compared with BF4-, led to a net mass gain/lost during a negative/positive potential scan, masking partially the anion response. Such subtleties of the interfacial ion transfer processes were disentangled due to the complementarity of the EQCM and AC-EG methodologies, which were applied here for the characterization of electrochemical processes at the PEDOT NW electrode/organic electrolyte interface.

Abstract
Polypyrrole nanotubes rank among the most conducting forms of organic semiconductors. They are prepared by the oxidation of pyrrole in the presence of methyl orange. Other organic dyes, viz. ethyl orange, Acid Blue 25, and Acid Blue 129, have been used in the present study to prepare globules or nanofibers. The resulting polypyrroles were studied in detail by Raman spectroscopy. The apparent paradox when a dye contribution to spectra is absent with 785 nm excitation line and present with shorter wavelengths is explained by the resonance character of the Raman scattering, which allows the separation of the contributions from the polypyrrole surface and from the bulk. These differ depending on the laser excitation wavelength and the position of absorption maximum of the individual dyes in ultraviolet-visible spectra and affect both the laser-penetration depth and observation of the resonance effect. The spectra are discussed in terms of different ordering of polymer chains in individual morphologies. The correlation between conductivity, surface areas, and the proportions of ordered and disordered polypyrrole phases at the surface and in the interior of nanostructures is proposed and established using resonance Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract
Polyaniline nanoparticles (PANI-NPs) were easily obtained applying the solvent displacement method by using N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as good solvent and water as poor solvent. Different polymers such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), chondroitin sulfate (ChS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were used as stabilizers. Dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy corroborated the size and morphology of the formed NPs. It was demonstrated that the size of nanoparticles could be controlled by setting the concentration of PANI in NMP, the NMP to water ratio, and the stabilizer's nature. The functionalization and fluorescence of NPs were checked by spectroscopic techniques. Since polyaniline show only weak intrinsic luminescence, fluorescent groups were linked to the polyaniline chains prior to the nanoparticle formation using a linker. Polyaniline chains were functionalized by nucleophilic addition of cysteamine trough the thiol group thereby incorporating pendant primary aliphatic amine groups to the polyaniline backbone. Then, dansyl chloride (DNS-Cl), which could act as an extrinsic chromophore, was conjugated to the amine pendant groups. Later, the functionalized polyaniline was used to produce nanoparticles by solvent displacement. The optical and functional properties of fluorescent nanoparticles (F-PANI-NPs) were determined. F-PANI-NPs in the conductive state (pH < 4) are able to absorb near infrared radiation (NIR) creating a photothermal effect in an aqueous medium. Thus, multifunctional nanoparticles are obtained. The application of NIR on a F-PANI-NPs dispersion in contact with Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes bacterial death. Therefore, the F-PANI-NPs could be tracked and applied to inhibit different diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms and resistant to antibiotics as well as a new disinfection method to surgical materials.

Abstract
Abstract
Composite membranes based on porous support membranes filled with a proton-conducting polymer appear to be a promising approach to develop novel proton exchange membranes (PEMs). It allows optimization of the properties of the filler and the matrix separately, e.g. for maximal conductivity of the former and maximal physical strength of the latter. In addition, the confinement itself can alter the properties of the filling ionomer, e.g. toward higher conductivity and selectivity due to alignment and restricted swelling. This article reviews the literature on PEMs prepared by filling of submicron and nanometric size pores with Nafion and other proton-conductive polymers. PEMs based on alternating perfluorinated and non-perfluorinated polymer systems and incorporation of fillers are briefly discussed too, as they share some structure/transport relationships with the pore-filling PEMs. We also review here the background knowledge on structural and transport properties of Nafion and proton-conducting polymers in general, as well as experimental methods concerned with preparation and characterization of pore-filling membranes. Such information will be useful for preparing next-generation composite membranes, which will allow maximal utilization of beneficial characteristics of polymeric proton conductors and understanding the complicated structure/transport relationships in the pore-filling composite PEMs.

Hydrogel-based biosensors have drawn considerable attention due to their various advantages over conventional detection systems. Recent studies have shown that hydrogel biosensors can be excellent alternative systems to detect a wide range of biomolecules, including small biochemicals, pathogenic proteins, and disease specific genes. Due to the excellent physical properties of hydrogels such as the high water content and stimuli-responsive behavior of cross-linked network structures, this system can offer substantial improvement for the design of novel detection systems for various diagnostic applications. The other main advantage of hydrogels is the role of biomimetic three-dimensional (3D) matrix immobilizing enzymes and aptamers within the detection systems, which enhances their stability. This provides ideal reaction conditions for enzymes and aptamers to interact with substrates within the aqueous environment of the hydrogel. In this review, we have highlighted various novel detection approaches utilizing the outstanding properties of the hydrogel. This review summarizes the recent progress of hydrogel-based biosensors and discusses their future perspectives and clinical limitations to overcome.

Abstract
In the present work, we have studied a nanocomposite of polyaniline nanofiber-graphene microflowers (PANInf-GMF), prepared by an in situ rapid mixing polymerization method. The structural and morphological studies of the nanocomposite (PANInf-GMF) were carried out by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The mesoporous, nanofibrous and microflower structures were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The functional groups and synergetic effects were observed by FTIR and micro-Raman measurements. The water wettability was carried out by a contact angle measurement technique and found to be super hydrophilic in nature towards water. This nanocomposite was deposited onto indium-tin-oxide coated glass substrate by a drop casting method and used for the detection of cholesterol using an electrochemical technique. The differential pulse voltammetry studies show the appreciable increase in the current with the addition of 1.93 to 464.04 mg dl(-1) cholesterol concentration. It is also found that the electrodes were highly selective towards cholesterol when compared to other biological interfering analytes, such as glucose, urea, citric acid, cysteine and ascorbic acid. The sensitivity of the sensor is estimated as 0.101 μA mg(-1) dl cm(-2) and the lower detection limit as 1.93 mg dl(-1). This work will throw light on the preparation of non-enzymatic biosensors based on PANInf-carbon nanostructure composites.

Abstract
Two different methods were used to obtain polypyrrole/AuNP (Ppy/AuNP) composites. One through the electrooxidation of the pyrrole monomer in the presence of colloidal gold nanoparticles, referred to as trapping method (T), and the second one by electrodeposition of both components from one solution containing the monomer and a gold salt, referred to as cogeneration method (C). In both cases, electrodeposition was carried out through galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods and using platinum (Pt) or stainless steel (SS) as substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that in all cases gold nanoparticles of similar size were uniformly dispersed in the Ppy matrix. The amount of AuNPs incorporated in the Ppy films was higher when electropolymerization was carried out by chronopotentiometry (CP). Besides, cogeneration method allowed for the incorporation of a higher number of AuNPs than trapping. Impedance experiments demonstrated that the insertion of AuNPs increased the conductivity. As an electrochemical sensor, the Ppy/AuNp deposited on platinum exhibited a strong electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of catechol. The effect was higher in films obtained by CP than in films obtained by chronoamperometry (CA). The influence of the method used to introduce the AuNPs (trapping or cogeneration) was not so important. The limits of detection (LOD) were in the range from 10(-5) to 10(-6) mol/L. LODs attained using films deposited on platinum were lower due to a synergy between AuNPs and platinum that facilitates the electron transfer, improving the electrocatalytic properties. Such synergistic effects are not so pronounced on stainless steel, but acceptable LOD are attained with lower price sensors.

Abstract
We report a new electrochemical capacitor with an aqueous KI-KOH electrolyte that exhibits a higher specific energy and power than the state-of-the-art nonaqueous electrochemical capacitors. In addition to electrical double layer capacitance, redox reactions in this device contribute to charge storage at both positive and negative electrodes via a catholyte of IOx-/I- couple and a redox couple of H2O/Had, respectively. Here, we, for the first time, report utilizing IOx-/I- redox couple for the positive electrode, which pins the positive electrode potential to be 0.4-0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl. With the positive electrode potential pinned, we can polarize the cell to 1.6 V without breaking down the aqueous electrolyte so that the negative electrode potential could reach -1.1 V vs Ag/AgCl in the basic electrolyte, greatly enhancing energy storage. Both mass spectroscopy and Raman spectrometry confirm the formation of IO3- ions (+5) from I- (-1) after charging. Based on the total mass of electrodes and electrolyte in a practically relevant cell configuration, the device exhibits a maximum specific energy of 7.1 Wh/kg, operates between -20 and 50 °C, provides a maximum specific power of 6222 W/kg, and has a stable cycling life with 93% retention of the peak specific energy after 14,000 cycles.

Abstract
TiO2 semiconductor nanobelts have unique structural and functional properties, which lead to great potential in many fields, including photovoltaics, photocatalysis, energy storage, gas sensors, biosensors, and even biomaterials. A review of synthetic methods, properties, surface modification, and applications of TiO2 nanobelts is presented here. The structural features and basic properties of TiO2 nanobelts are systematically discussed, with the many applications of TiO2 nanobelts in the fields of photocatalysis, solar cells, gas sensors, biosensors, and lithium-ion batteries then introduced. Research efforts that aim to overcome the intrinsic drawbacks of TiO2 nanobelts are also highlighted. These efforts are focused on the rational design and modification of TiO2 nanobelts by doping with heteroatoms and/or forming surface heterostructures, to improve their desirable properties. Subsequently, the various types of surface heterostructures obtained by coupling TiO2 nanobelts with metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, chalcogenides, and conducting polymers are described. Further, the charge separation and electron transfer at the interfaces of these heterostructures are also discussed. These properties are related to improved sensitivity and selectivity for specific gases and biomolecules, as well as enhanced UV and visible light photocatalytic properties. The progress in developments of near-infrared-active photocatalysts based on TiO2 nanobelts is also highlighted. Finally, an outline of important directions of future research into the synthesis, modification, and applications of this unique material is given.

Abstract
We in this study used a commercial grade kitchen sponge as the scaffold where both graphene platelets (GnPs) and polyaniline (PANi) nanorods were deposited. The high electrical conductivity of GnPs (1460 S cm(-1)) enhances the pseudo-capacitive performance of PANi grown vertically on the GnPs basal planes; the interconnected pores of the sponge provide sufficient inner surface between the GnPs/PANi composite and the electrolyte, which thus facilitates ion diffusion during charge and discharge processes. When the composite electrode was used to build a supercapacitor with two-electrode configuration, it exhibited a specific capacitance of 965.3 F g(-1) at a scan rate of 10 mV s(-1) in 1.0 M H2SO4 solution. In addition, the composite Nyquist plot showed no semicircle at high frequency corresponding to a low equivalent series resistance of 0.35 Ω. At 100 mV s(-1), the supercapacitor demonstrated an energy density of 34.5 Wh kg(-1) and a power density of 12.4 kW kg(-1) based on the total mass of the active materials on both electrodes. To demonstrate the performance, we built an array consisting of three cells connected in series, which lit up a red light emitting diode for five minutes. This simple method holds promise for high-performance yet low-cost electrodes for supercapacitors.
