Synthesis, electron tomography and single-particle optical response of twisted gold nano-bipyramids

Stimuli Responsive Molecular Exchange of Structure Directing Agents on Gold Nanobipyramids: Cancer Cell Detection and Synergistic Therapeutics

Surface-engineered gold nanoparticles have been considered as versatile systems for theranostics applications. Moreover, surface covering or stabilizing agents on gold nanoparticles especially gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) provides an extra space for cargo molecules entrapment. However, it is not well studied yet and also the preparation of AuNBPs still remains dependent largely on cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a cytotoxic surfactant. Therefore, the direct use of CTAB stabilized nanoparticles is not recommended for cancer theranostics applications. Herein, we address an approach of dodecyl ethyl dimethylammonium bromide (DMAB) as biocompatible structure directing agent for AuNBPs, which also accommodate anticancer drug doxorubicin (45%), an additional chemotherapeutics agent. Upon near-infrared light (NIR, 808 nm) exposure, engineered AuNBPs exhibit (i) better phototransduction (51 °C) due to NIR absorption ability (650-900 nm), (ii) photo triggered drug release (more than 80%), and (iii) synergistic chemophototherapy for breast cancer cells. Drug release response has been evaluated in tumor microenvironment conditions (84% in acidic pH and 80% at high GSH) due to protonation and high affinity of thiol binding with AuNBPs followed by DMAB replacement. Intracellular glutathione (GSH, 5-7.5 mM) replaces DMAB from AuNBPs, which cause easy aggregation of nanoparticles as corroborated by colorimetric shifts, suggesting their utilization as a molecular sensing probe of early stage cancer biomarkers. Our optimized recipe yield is monodisperse DMAB-AuNBPs with ∼90% purity even at large scales (500 mL volume per batch). DMAB-AuNBPs show better cell viability (more than 90%) across all concentrations (5-500 ug/mL) when directly compared to CTAB-AuNBPs (less than 10%). Our findings show the potential of DMAB-AuNBPs for early stage cancer detection and theranostics applications.

Macroscopic Superlattice Membranes Self-Assembled from Gold Nanobipyramids with Precisely Tunable Tip Arrangements for SERS

A persistent challenge in utilizing Au nanocrystals for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) lies in achieving controllable superstructures that maximize SERS performance. Here, a novel strategy is proposed to enhance the SERS performance by precisely adjusting the tip arrangements of Au nanobipyramids (BPs) in two-dimensional (2D) superlattices (SLs). This is achieved through ligand-exchange of Au BPs, followed by liquid-air interfacial assembly, resulting in large-area, transferrable SL membranes. The key to controlling the arrangement of Au BPs in the SLs is the regulation of the amount of free ligands added during self-assembly, which allows for the precise formation of various configurations such as tilted SLs, tip-on-tip SLs, and tip-to-tip SLs. Among these configurations, tip-on-tip SLs exhibit the highest enhancement factor for SERS, reaching an impressive value of 1.95×108, with uniform and consistent SERS signals across a large area. The experimental findings are further corroborated by simulations using the finite element method. This study establishes an efficient method for engineering the microstructure of 2D SLs composed of Au BPs, highlighting the importance of fine-tuning the tip arrangements of Au BPs to regulate SERS performance.

Temperature-Derived Purification of Gold Nano-Bipyramids for Colorimetric Detection of Tannic Acid

Gold nanostructures have attracted broad attention. Among various nanostructures, gold nanobipyramids have shown great potential in sensing, biomedicine, environmental protection, chemical catalysis, and optics due to their unique physical and optical properties and ease of chemical functionalization. Compared with other plasmonic nanostructures, gold nanobipyramids possess narrow optical resonances, stronger plasmonic local field enhancement, and size- and shape-dependent surface plasmon resonance. However, the synthesis and purification of homogeneous gold nanobipyramids are very challenging. The gold nanobipyramids synthesized via the commonly used seed-mediated growth method have low yields and are often coproduced with spherical nanoparticles. In this study, we reported a temperature-derived purification method for the isolation of gold bipyramids. In the presence of salt, by altering the temperature of the solution, large gold bipyramids can be separated from small spherical nanoparticles. As a result, a yield of as high as 97% gold nanobipyramids can be achieved through a single round of purification, and correspondingly, the ratio between the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and transverse SPR intensity significantly increases to as high as 6.7. The purified gold nanobipyramids can be used as a colorimetric probe in the detection of tannic acid with a detection limit of 0.86 μM and a linear detection range from 1.25 to 37.5 μM.

Facet-dependent gold nanocrystals for effective photothermal killing of bacteria

Gold-based plasmonic nanocrystals have been extensively developed for noninvasive photothermal therapy. In this study, gold nanorods (AuNRs) with (200) plane and gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) with (111) plane were utilized as photothermal agents for noninvasive photothermal therapy. With longitudinal surface plasma bands at ~808 nm, both of AuNRs and AuNBPs revealed photothermal capability and reversibility of laser response under 808-nm near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Moreover, AuNBPs with (111) plane exhibited higher photothermal performance than that of AuNRs with (200) plane under NIR laser irradiation. Density function theory (DFT) simulations revealed that water adsorption energy followed the order Au(111) < Au(100), indicating that the water was easily desorbed on the Au(111) surface for photothermal heating. For the photothermal therapy against Escherichia coli (E. coli), AuNBPs also exhibited higher efficiency compared to that of AuNRs under NIR laser irradiation. Combination of experimental photothermal therapy and DFT simulations demonstrated that AuNBPs with (111) plane were better photothermal agents than that of AuNRs with (100) plane.

Synthesis and bioconjugation of alkanethiol-stabilized gold bipyramid nanoparticles

Gold bipyramid (GBP) nanoparticles are promising for a range of biomedical applications, including biosensing and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, due to their favorable optical properties and ease of chemical functionalization. Here we report improved synthesis methods, including preparation of gold seed particles with an increased shelf life of ∼1 month, and preparation of GBPs with significantly shortened synthesis time (< 1 h). We also report methods for the functionalization and bioconjugation of the GBPs, including functionalization with alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and bioconjugation with proteins via carbodiimide cross-linking. Binding of specific antibodies to the nanoparticle-bound proteins was subsequently observed via localized surface plasmon resonance sensing. Rabbit IgG and goat anti-Rabbit IgG antibodies were used as a model system for antibody-antigen interactions. As-synthesized, SAM-functionalized, and bioconjugated bipyramids were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, zeta potential, and dynamic light scattering.

Effects of Conformational Variation on Structural Insights from Solution-Phase Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra contain information on the chemical structure on nanoparticle surfaces through the position and alignment of molecules with the electromagnetic near field. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) can provide the Raman tensors needed for a detailed interpretation of SERS spectra. Here, the impact of molecular conformations on SERS spectra is considered. TDDFT calculations of the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide with five conformers produced more accurate unenhanced Raman spectra than a simple all-trans structure. The calculations and measurements also demonstrated a loss of structural information in the CH2/CH3 scissor vibration band at 1450 cm-1 in the SERS spectra. To study lipid bilayers, TDDFT calculations on conformers of methyl phosphorylcholine and cis-5-decene served as models for the symmetric choline stretch in the lipid headgroup and the C═C stretch in the acyl chains of 1,2-oleoyl-glycero-3-phosphocholine. Conformer considerations enabled a measurement of the distribution of double-bond orientations with an order parameter of SC═C = 0.53.

Single Gold Bipyramid Nanoparticle Orientation Measured by Plasmon-Resonant Scattering Polarimetry

The 3D orientation of a single gold nanoparticle is probed experimentally by light scattering polarimetry. We choose high-quality gold bipyramids (AuBPs) that support around 700 nm a well-defined narrow longitudinal localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) which can be considered as a linear radiating dipole. A specific spectroscopic dark-field technique was used to control the collection angles of the scattered light. The in-plane as well as the out-of-plane angles are determined by analyzing the polarization of the scattered radiation. The data are compared with a previously developed model where the environment and the angular collection both play crucial roles. We show that most of the single AuBPs present an out-of-plane orientation consistent with their geometry. Finally, the fundamental role of the collection angles on the determination of the orientation is investigated for the first time. Several features are then deduced: we validate the choice of the analytical 1D model, an accurate 3D orientation is obtained, and the critical contribution of the evanescent waves is highlighted.

Role of gold nanoparticles in advanced biomedical applications

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have generated keen interest among researchers in recent years due to their excellent physicochemical properties. In general, GNPs are biocompatible, amenable to desired functionalization, non-corroding, and exhibit size and shape dependent optical and electronic properties. These excellent properties of GNPs exhibit their tremendous potential for use in diverse biomedical applications. Herein, we have evaluated the recent advancements of GNPs to highlight their exceptional potential in the biomedical field. Special focus has been given to emerging biomedical applications including bio-imaging, site specific drug/gene delivery, nano-sensing, diagnostics, photon induced therapeutics, and theranostics. We have also elaborated on the basics, presented a historical preview, and discussed the synthesis strategies, functionalization methods, stabilization techniques, and key properties of GNPs. Lastly, we have concluded this article with key findings and unaddressed challenges. Overall, this review is a complete package to understand the importance and achievements of GNPs in the biomedical field.

Simulating Plasmon Resonances of Gold Nanoparticles with Bipyramidal Shapes by Boundary Element Methods

Computational modeling and accurate simulations of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption properties are reported for gold nanobipyramids (GNBs), a class of metal nanoparticle that features highly tunable, geometry-dependent optical properties. GNB bicone models with spherical tips performed best in reproducing experimental LSPR spectra while the comparison with other geometrical models provided a fundamental understanding of base shapes and tip effects on the optical properties of GNBs. Our results demonstrated the importance of averaging all geometrical parameters determined from transmission electron microscopy images to build representative models of GNBs. By assessing the performances of LSPR absorption spectra simulations based on a quasi-static approximation, we provided an applicability range of this approach as a function of the nanoparticle size, paving the way to the theoretical study of the coupling between molecular electron densities and metal nanoparticles in GNB-based nanohybrid systems, with potential applications in the design of nanomaterials for bioimaging, optics and photocatalysis.

Nanomaterials for the Photothermal Killing of Bacteria

An upsurge in the multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pestilence is a global cause for concern in terms of human health. Lately, nanomaterials with photothermal effects have assisted in the efficient killing of MDR bacteria, attributable to their uncommon plasmonic, photocatalytic, and structural properties. Examinations of substantial amounts of photothermally enabled nanomaterials have shown bactericidal effects in an optimized time under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. In this review, we have compiled recent advances in photothermally enabled nanomaterials for antibacterial activities and their mechanisms. Photothermally enabled nanomaterials are classified into three groups, including metal-, carbon-, and polymer-based nanomaterials. Based on substantial accomplishments with photothermally enabled nanomaterials, we have inferred current trends and their prospective clinical applications.

Calligraphed Selective Plasmonic Arrays on Paper Platforms for Complementary Dual Optical "ON/OFF Switch" Sensing

Designing innovative (nano)detection platforms, respecting their low-cost and fabrication simplicity, capable to chemically detect multiple target analytes by employing the same engineered device, is still a great challenge in the multiplexed biosensor development. In this scientific context, in the current manuscript, we exploit the low-cost plasmonic calligraphy as a versatile approach to directly draw continuous plasmonic lines on Whatman paper using a regular ballpoint pen successively filled with two different anisotropic nanoparticles shapes (gold bipyramids—AuBPs and gold nanorods—AuNRs) as colloidal inks. After the efficient immobilization of the positively-charged AuBPs and AuNRs onto the paper fibres, proved by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) investigations, the specificity of our as-calligraphed-paper platform is ensured by coating the selected lines with a thin layer of anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) polyelectrolyte, creating, consequently, a well-defined plasmonic array of charge-selective regions. Finally, the functionality of the well-isolated and as-miniaturized active plasmonic array is, subsequently, tested using the anionic Rose-Bengal and cationic Rhodamine 6G target analytes and proved by complementary dual optical “ON/OFF Switch” sensing (i.e. Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering sensing/metal-enhanced fluorescence sensing) onto the same plasmonic line, developing thus a simple multiplexed plasmonic array platform, which could further facilitate the well-desired biomarker detection in complex mixtures.

Colorimetric and visual detection of cyanide ions based on the morphological transformation of gold nanobipyramids into gold nanoparticles

In this study, we developed a facile, rapid, selective and sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of cyanide ions (CN⁻) by using gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs).

Beyond the Concentration Limitation in the Synthesis of Nanobipyramids and Other Pentatwinned Gold Nanostructures

Gold nanoparticles offer unique optoelectronic properties relevant for a wide range of processes and products, in biology and medicine (therapeutic agents, diagnostic, drug delivery), as well as in electronics, photovoltaics, and catalysis. So far, various synthesis methods proposed have led to rather limited concentration and purity of the colloidal suspensions, severely hindering their use. Here, we present a simple and versatile procedure for the synthesis of gold pentatwinned nanostructures, including nanobipyramids based on a seed-mediated growth process that overcomes the concentration limitations of current methods by 2 orders of magnitude. Moreover, our novel process offers quantitative yields while easily allowing a fine control of the particles' shape, size (with a high monodispersity), and plasmonic properties. Finally, we demonstrate that our method can be easily upscaled to produce large amounts of nanostructures, up to the gram scale, with minimal waste and postprocessing, thus facilitating their use for further applications and industrial developments.

Multimodal Biosensing on Paper-Based Platform Fabricated by Plasmonic Calligraphy Using Gold Nanobypiramids Ink

In this work, we design new plasmonic paper-based nanoplatforms with interesting capabilities in terms of sensitivity, efficiency, and reproducibility for promoting multimodal biodetection via Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR), Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), and Metal Enhanced Fluorescence (MEF). To succeed, we exploit the unique optical properties of gold nanobipyramids (AuBPs) deposited onto the cellulose fibers via plasmonic calligraphy using a commercial pen. The first step of the biosensing protocol was to precisely graft the previously chemically-formed p-aminothiophenol@Biotin system, as active recognition element for target streptavidin detection, onto the plasmonic nanoplatform. The specific capture of the target protein was successfully demonstrated using three complementary sensing techniques. As a result, while the LSPR based sensing capabilities of the nanoplatform were proved by successive 13-18 nm red shifts of the longitudinal LSPR associated with the change of the surface RI after each step. By employing the ultrasensitive SERS technique, we were able to indirectly confirm the molecular identification of the biotin-streptavidin interaction due to the protein fingerprint bands assigned to amide I, amide III, and Trp vibrations. Additionally, the formed biotin-streptavidin complex acted as a spacer to ensure an optimal distance between the AuBP surface and the Alexa 680 fluorophore for achieving a 2-fold fluorescence emission enhancement of streptavidin@Alexa 680 on the biotinylated nanoplatform compared to the same complex on bare paper (near the plasmonic lines), implementing thus a novel MEF sensing nanoplatform. Finally, by integrating multiple LSPR, SERS, and MEF nanosensors with multiplex capability into a single flexible and portable plasmonic nanoplatform, we could overcome important limits in the field of portable point-of-care diagnostics.

Single gold bipyramids on a silanized substrate as robust plasmonic sensors for liquid environments

Sensitive, robust and stable sensors are required to bring biosensing techniques from the forefront of research to clinical and commercial settings. To this end, we report on the development of new robust plasmonic sensors consisting of gold nano-bipyramids (BPs) grafted to a glass substrate via silanization, associated with a novel setup based on Spatial Modulation Spectroscopy allowing the measurement of the optical response of individual nano-objects in a liquid environment. We thereby show that changes in the refractive index of the medium around individual silanized BPs can be detected by measuring their plasmonic shift with sensitivities comparable to values reported elsewhere and in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The optical response is furthermore shown to be stable and robust allowing for repeated measurements in different media and storage over many months. This work opens up new perspectives in the field of plasmonic bio-sensing as our setup is readily adaptable to dynamic liquid measurements and a wide range of applications such as the detection of clinically important analytes or pollutants in water.

Decorating gold nanostars with multiwalled carbon nanotubes for photothermal therapy

Gold nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes have attracted substantial attention in recent years for their potential applications in photothermal therapy (PTT) as an emerging breakthrough in cancer treatment. Herein, a hybrid nanomaterial of gold nanostars/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was synthesized by two-step reduction via the control of several synthetic conditions such as the reducing agent, pH value, concentration and ratio of reagents. The material shows good biocompatibility and high photothermal conversion efficiency, demonstrating its applicability in PTT. The lack of surfactant in the synthesis process made the hybrid nanomaterial cell-friendly, with no effects on viability in vitro. The MWCNT/gold nanostars hybrid nanomaterial presented 12.4% higher photothermal efficiency than gold nanostars alone and showed a 2.4-fold increase over gold nanospheres based on a heating test under 808 nm laser irradiation. Moreover, the MWCNTs/gold nanostars at low concentration (0.32 nM) exhibited remarkably improved photothermal cancer cell-killing efficacy, which may be attributed to the surface plasmon resonance absorption of the gold nanostars and the combined effects of enhanced coupling between the MWCNTs and gold nanostars. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the MWCNTs/gold nanostars developed herein show prominent photothermal value, and thus may serve as a novel photothermal agent for cancer therapy.

Light-Induced Hydrogel Based on Tumor-Targeting Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles as a Theranostic Platform for Sustained Cancer Treatment

Herein, we report a facile fabrication of a polymer (azobenzene and α-cyclodextrin-functionalized hyaluronic acid) and gold nanobipyramids (AuNBs) conjugated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to be used as an injectable drug delivery system for sustained cancer treatment. Because of the specific affinity between the hyaluronic acid (HA) on MSNs and the CD44 antigen overexpressed on tumor cells, the MSNs can selectively attach to tumor cells. The nanocomposite material then exploits thermoresponsive interactions between α-cyclodextrin and azobenzene, and the photothermal properties of gold nanobipyramids, to in situ self-assemble into a hydrogel under near-infrared (NIR) radiation. Upon gelation, the drug (doxorubicin)-loaded MSNs carriers were enclosed in the HA network of the hydrogel, whereas further degradation of the HA in the hydrogel due to the upregulation of hyaluronidase (HAase) around the tumor tissue will result in the release of MSNs from the hydrogel, which can then be taken by tumor cells and deliver their drug to the cell nuclei. This design is able to provide a microenvironment with rich anticancer drugs in, and around, the tumor tissue for time periods long enough to prevent the recrudescence of the disease. The extra efficacy that this strategy affords builds upon the capabilities of conventional therapies.

The intrinsic luminescence of individual plasmonic nanostructures in aqueous suspension by photon time-of-flight spectroscopy

We have studied the intrinsic one-photon excited luminescence of freely diffusing gold nanoparticles of different shapes in aqueous suspension. Gold nanospheres were used as a reference, since their luminescence has been investigated previously and their light absorption and scattering properties are described analytically by Mie theory. We then studied gold nanobipyramids and nanostars that have recently gained interest as building blocks for new plasmonic nanosensors. The aim of our study is to determine whether the luminescence of gold nanoparticles of complex shape (bipyramids and nanostars) is a plasmon-assisted process, in line with the conclusions of recent spectroscopic studies on spheres and nanorods. Our study has been performed on particles in suspension in order to avoid any artefact from the heterogeneous environment created when particles are deposited on a substrate. We employ a recently developed photon time-of-flight method in combination with correlation spectroscopy of the light scattered by the particles to probe the luminescent properties of individual particles based on a particle-by-particle spectral analysis. Furthermore, we have performed resonant light scattering spectroscopic measurements on the same samples. Our work demonstrates the power of our time-of flight method for uncovering the plasmonic signatures of individual bipyramids and nanostars during their brief passage in the focal volume of a confocal set-up. These spectral features of individual particles remain hidden in macroscopic measurements. We find that the intrinsic photoluminescence emission of gold bipyramids and gold nanostars is mediated by their localized surface plasmons.

From gold nanobipyramids to nanojavelins for a precise tuning of the plasmon resonance to the infrared wavelengths: experimental and theoretical aspects

Anisotropic gold nanoparticles and in particular with shapes exhibiting tips are known to present an extremely strong localized electromagnetic field. This field is mostly located at the top of the tips and can be used in various optical applications. Moreover, as a consequence of their anisotropy, they present two plasmon resonance bands corresponding to the transverse and longitudinal resonance modes. Tuning the aspect ratio it becomes possible to display SPR bands near the near infrared region. This was particularly investigated in the case of nanorods and also for bipyramids. In this paper we report a high yield synthesis approach that allows one to precisely control the aspect ratio of bipyramids and to elongate the structure until they adopt a javelin-like aspect. We were able to prepare nano-javelins with surface plasmon resonances up to 1850 nm, opening important perspectives in terms of optical applications in the NIR and IR regions. The synthetic methods are fully reported and the optical properties were correlated with the theoretical approach, taking into consideration not only the aspect ratio but also the truncation of the nano-objects.

Real-time monitoring for the morphological variations of single gold nanorods

The morphological characteristics of metal nanoparticles, particularly the shape, play an essential role in the optical, physical and chemical properties. In this work, we reported a transverse etching process to investigate the morphological variations of single gold nanorods (GNRs). Dark-field microscopy and Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy were used as complementary technologies to track the transverse etching process. Dark-field imaging with high spatial and temporal resolution could easily monitor the transverse etching process of GNRs in situ and in real time. Interactions between the scattering spectrum and the morphological variations were judiciously calculated within the dipole approximation by the Drude function. The calculated peak shift of GNRs (Δλmax = 17 nm) was obtained via the ratio of the long axis and short axis (aspect ratio) of GNRs from transmission electron microscopy. The average scattering peak shift (Δλmax = 22 nm) from Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy was in good agreement with the calculated peak shift. Monitoring the morphological variations of single GNRs enables us to track the transverse etching of GNRs at arbitrary time. This promises to be a useful method for the study of different nanomaterials and their spectral properties.

Reshaping anisotropic gold nanoparticles through oxidative etching: the role of the surfactant and nanoparticle surface curvature

We study reshaping of gold nanorods, bipyramids and triangles to reveal roles of the surfactant in the oxidative etching process.

Site-specific growth of AgPd nanodendrites on highly purified Au bipyramids with remarkable catalytic performance

Au nanorods have been extensively explored in various applications as the template for heterogeneous metallic nanostructures. However, Au bipyramids (AuBPs) have been paid much less attention although they possess an intriguing crystalline structure and extremely superior plasmonic properties which are absent in AuNRs. The state-of-the-art synthesis cannot produce pure AuBPs, which has become a major barrier to their various applications like catalysis since purity is often critical for achieving the desired performance. Herein, we have shown a facile approach to obtain large-scale high-purity AuBPs. The purity of AuBPs can be improved from 30 to 50% for the as-synthesized AuBP solution to over 95% for the purified solution. Site-specific growth of AgPd nanodendrites on multiply twinned AuBPs from core-shell to tipped nanostructures was achieved for the first time by coupling a galvanic replacement with a co-reduction process, which show remarkable catalytic activity in the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by NaBH4. The use of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reductant in the co-reduction process and the intriguing crystalline structure of AuBPs play a critical role in forming these unique structures. We believe that this work would provide a general strategy to prepare high-purity AuBP based trimetallic nanostructures, which offers the opportunity for AuBPs to be widely used in catalysis or other plasmonic-effect related applications in the near future.

Effect of experimental conditions on size control of Au nanoparticles synthesized by atmospheric microplasma electrochemistry

Atmospheric microplasma electrochemistry was utilized to synthesize Au nanoparticles (NPs). The synthesized Au NPs were investigated as a function of reduction current, solution temperature, and stirring (or not) by using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorbance and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was illustrated that high current promoted the growth of Au NPs with small size, and more Au NPs with large size were synthesized as a rise of temperature. The Au NPs often with small size were synthesized as a result of stirring. The production rate, the electrostatic repulsion, and the residence time of the Au NPs at the interfacial region play an important role in the growth of Au NPs. The results shed light upon the roadmap to control the size and particle size distribution (PSD) of Au NPs synthesized by atmospheric microplasma electrochemistry.

Plasmonic bipyramids for fluorescence enhancement and protection against photobleaching

A great number of studies focus their interest on the photophysical properties of fluorescent hybrid gold nanoparticles for potential applications in biotechnologies such as imaging and/or treatment. Spherical gold nanoparticles are known to quench a chromophore fluorescent signal, when moieties are located in their close vicinity. The use of a polymer spacer on such a system allowed only partial recovery of the dye emission by controlling the surface to dye distance. Gold-based anisotropic sharp nanostructures appear to exhibit more interesting features due to the strong electric field generated at their edges and tips. In this paper, a complete study of hybrid fluorescent bipyramidal-like gold nanostructures is presented. We describe the chemical synthesis of gold bipyramids functionalized with fluorescent water-soluble polymers and their photophysics both in solution and on a single object. We show that the use of a bipyramidal shape instead of a spherical one leads to total recovery of the fluorescence and even to an enhancement of the emission of the dyes by a factor of 1.4.

Resonant light scattering spectroscopy of gold, silver and gold-silver alloy nanoparticles and optical detection in microfluidic channels

Dark field resonant light scattering by gold and silver nanoparticles enables the detection and spectroscopy of such particles with high sensitivity, down to the single-particle level, and can be used to implement miniaturised optical detection schemes for chemical and biological analysis. Here, we present a straightforward optical spectroscopic methodology for the quantitative spectrometric study of resonant light scattering (RLS) by nanoparticles. RLS spectroscopy is complementary to UV-visible absorbance measurements, and we apply it to the characterisation and comparison of different types of gold, silver and gold-silver alloy nanoparticles. The potential of gold and silver particles as alternatives for fluorescent probes in certain applications is discussed. RLS spectroscopy is shown to be useful for studying analyte-induced gold nanoparticle assembly and nanoparticle chemistry, which can induce radical changes in the plasmonic resonances responsible for the strong light scattering. Furthermore, the feasibility of dark field RLS detection and quantitation of metal nanoparticles in microfluidic volumes is demonstrated, opening interesting possibilities for the further development of microfluidic detection schemes.

Acoustic vibrations of Au nano-bipyramids and their modification under Ag deposition: a perspective for the development of nanobalances

We investigated the acoustic vibrations of gold nanobipyramids and bimetallic gold-silver core-shell bipyramids, synthesized by wet chemistry techniques, using a high-sensitivity pump-probe femtosecond setup. Three modes were observed and characterized in the gold core particles for lengths varying from 49 to 170 nm and diameters varying from 20 to 40 nm. The two strongest modes have been associated with the fundamental extensional and its first harmonic, and a weak mode has been associated with the fundamental radial mode, in very good agreement with numerical simulations. We then derived linear laws linking the periods to the dimensions both experimentally and numerically. To go further, we investigated the evolution of these modes under silver deposition on gold core bipyramids. We studied the evolution of the periods of the extensional modes, which were found to be in good qualitative agreement with numerical simulations. Moreover, we observed a strong enhancement of the radial mode amplitude when silver is deposited: we are typically sensitive to the deposition of 40 attograms of silver per gold core particle. This opens up possible applications in the field of mass sensing, where metallic nanobalances have an important role to play, taking advantage of their robustness and versatility.

Tuning dye-to-particle interactions toward luminescent gold nanostars

Light-matter interactions are of great interest for potential biological applications (bioimaging, biosensing, phototherapy). For such applications, sharp nanostructures exhibit interesting features since their extinction bands (surface plasmon resonance) cover a large bandwidth in the whole visible wavelength region due to the existence of "hot spots" located at the end of the tips. In this context, gold nanostars appear to be interesting objects. However, their study remains difficult, mainly due to complicated synthetic methods and further functionalization. This paper reports the synthesis, functionalization, and photophysics of luminescent hybrid gold nanostars prepared using a layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition method for the tuning of chromophore-to-particle distances together with the impact of the spectral overlap between the plasmon and the emission/absorption of the dyes. Several luminescent dyes with different optical signatures were selectively adsorbed at the nanoparticle surface. The optimized systems, exhibiting the highest luminescence recovery, clearly showed that overlap must be as low as possible. Also, the fluorescence intensities were quenched in close vicinity of the metal surface and revealed a distance-dependence with almost full recovery of the dyes emission for 11 LbL layers, which corresponded to 15 nm distances evaluated on dried samples. The photophysics of the luminescent core-shell particles were carried out in suspension and correlated with the response of isolated single objects.

Size-controlled synthesis of gold bipyramids using an aqueous mixture of CTAC and salicylate anions as the soft template

One-dimensional (1D) gold (Au) bipyramids are successfully synthesized through a facile seed-mediated method using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), Au seed nanoparticles, Ag(+) ions, and ascorbic acid. The length and optical properties of the synthesized Au bipyramids are controlled with precision by varying the amount of salicylate anions (Sal(-)) added during the synthesis. The micelles formed from CTA(+)-Sal(-) mixtures in aqueous solutions act as effective templates for the size-controlled synthesis of 1D nanocrystals.

Nanocarriers with ultrahigh chromophore loading for fluorescence bio-imaging and photodynamic therapy

We describe the design of original nanocarriers that allows for ultrahigh chromophore loading while maintaining the photo-activity of each individual molecule. They consist in shells of charged biocompatible polymers grafted on gold nanospheres. The self-organization of extended polymer chains results from repulsive charges and steric interactions that are optimized by tuning the surface curvature of nanoparticles. This type of nano-scaffolds can be used as light-activated theranostic agents for fluorescence imaging and photodynamic therapy. We demonstrate that, labeled with a fluorescent photosensitizer, it can localize therapeutic molecules before triggering the cell death of B16-F10 melanoma with an efficiency that is similar to the efficiency of the polymer conjugate alone, and with the advantage of extremely high local loading of photosensitizers (object concentration in the picomolar range).

The unusual effect of AgNO3 on the growth of Au nanostructures and their catalytic performance

Au nanostructures attract much attention due to their potential applications in many fields. The controlled synthesis is critical to their properties modulation and applications. AgNO3-assisted synthesis is a widely used method for controllably preparing Au nanostructures in aqueous system. Herein, the effect of AgNO3 on the growth of Au nanostructures in polyol is studied. We observe an unusual effect that AgNO3 can induce the formation of pentatwinned Au nanostructures (nanorods and decahedra) and block the growth of Au nanorods. More interestingly, this blocking effect can be tuned through controlling the amount of AgNO3. A moderate amount of AgNO3 facilitates the formation of Au nanorods. A large amount of AgNO3 completely blocks the growth of nanorods and favors the formation of high quality decahedra (decahedra can be considered as nanorods with 0 nm longitudinal length). Besides, this blocking effect also allows preparation of different high-index-faceted Au nanobipyramids. These prepared Au nanostructures further serve as starting templates to fabricate other heterostructured Au/Ag nanomaterials, such as Ag-Au-Ag segmental nanorods, Au@Ag core-shelled nanostructures. The prepared nanostructures exhibit size- and structure-dependent catalytic performance in the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol by sodium borohydride.
