Abstract
Physical fitness plays a crucial role in determining human health and overall well-being. The objective of the study was to assess the changes in body structure and physical fitness among individuals examined in 2004 and 2022 (persons aged 32-34 and 50-52). The research material consists of data from the Krakow Continuous Study (KCS) of somatic development and physical fitness of people born in 1970 and 1972, conducted in Krakow in the years 1976-2022. In total, in 2004, 103 women and 122 men took part in the study, and in 2022-47 women and 67 men. Of these participants, 37 women and 53 men were present for both measurements. The following measurements were performed-physical fitness tests: handgrip strength of left and right hand, standing broad jump, sit-and-reach test and overhead medicine ball throw (2 kg); anthropometric measurements: body height, body weight and tissue composition, circumferences of the chest (relaxed and in deep inspiration), waist, hips, thigh, mid-upper-arm (MUAC, relaxed and in deep inspiration), forearm and calf, thickness of biceps, triceps, subscapular, abdominal, suprailiac and calf skinfolds; width of shoulders and hips, depth and width of the chest. A comparative analysis of the two series showed that all fitness test scores deteriorated. The percentage decrease was greater in women than in men in the tests of right and left handgrip strength and overhead medicine ball throw than in men, in the standing broad jump test similar in both sexes, in the sit-and-reach test-lower in women than in men. The greatest decreases were observed in the standing broad jump (by 14%) and the 2 kg medicine ball throw (15-12%), both in women and men. In contrast, the level of development of most of the somatic characteristics studied in 2022 was higher compared to the previous study, and, apart from body height, elbow and knee width and calf skinfold in both sexes, the differences in arithmetic means between the 2004 and 2022 series were statistically significant. Furthermore, the absence of involutionary changes in body height can be highlighted. In conclusion, the decrease in physical fitness occurring in adulthood and the increase in most somatic characteristics between 32 and 34 year-olds and 50 and 52 year-olds were confirmed.

Abstract
Whether morning heart rate variability (HRV) predicts the magnitude of its circadian variation in the absence of disease or is influenced by chronotype is unclear. We aimed to quantify associations between (1) morning HRV and its diurnal change, and (2) morning HRV and a Morningness−Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ)-derived chronotype. Resting electrocardiograms were obtained in the morning and evening on separate days in a counterbalanced order to determine the mean RR interval, root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), and standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals (SDNN) in 23 healthy men (24.6 ± 3.4 yrs; body mass index: 25.3 ± 2.8 kg/m2). The MEQ was completed during the first laboratory visit. Morning RMSSD and SDNN were significantly higher (Ps < 0.05) than evening values. Morning RMSSD and SDNN were associated with their absolute (Ps < 0.0001), and relative diurnal changes (Ps < 0.01). No associations were observed between HRV parameters and the MEQ chronotypes (Ps > 0.09). Morning HRV was a stronger determinant of its evening change than chronotype. Greater diurnal variation in HRV was dependent on higher morning values. Strategies to improve basal HRV may therefore support healthier cardio-autonomic circadian profiles in healthy young men.

Abstract
There is a scarcity of evidence on the association between heart rate variability (HRV) and chronotype, i.e., morningness and eveningness. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the association between chronotype, HRV, mood and stress response. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cinahl, PsycINFO and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed articles published in English between January 2000 and June 2020. A total of 11 articles met the inclusion criteria and were on study population, assessment of HRV and chronotype, main results and study limitations. Seven of the included studies were experimental and four were crossovers. The sample size varied from 9 to 221 participants, and both females and males were included. HRV was assessed using mostly time-domain and frequency-domain parameters; nonlinear parameters were used in only one study. The most used assessments for measuring chronotype were the Horne-Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ). The results showed that chronotype was associated with HRV, but the study designs were situation-specific, focusing, for example, on the effects of shiftwork, stressful situations, exercise, or sleep deprivation on HRV. In addition, some studies showed that evening types (E-type) performed better during evening or nighttime tasks, whereas morning types (M-type) performed better during morning activities. Specifically, E-types showed decreased HRV and HRV recovery in relation to tasks performed during morning or daytime when compared to M-types. As the findings are somewhat contradictory and include some methodological limitations (e.g., small sample sizes, age groups), it is important for future studies to evaluate the association between chronotype and HRV in a longitudinal setting. In addition, further research is needed to determine how chronotype can be optimally and individually utilized to increase the health and well-being of M-type and E-type individuals.

Abstract
Long-duration Antarctic expeditions are characterized by isolation, confinement, and extreme environments. Here we describe the time course of cardiac autonomic modulation assessed by heart rate variability (HRV) during 14-month expeditions at the German Neumayer III station in Antarctica. Heart rate recordings were acquired in supine position in the morning at rest once before the expedition (baseline) and monthly during the expedition from February to October. The total set comprised twenty-five healthy crewmembers (n = 15 men, 38 ± 6 yrs, n = 10 women, 32 ± 6 yrs, mean ± SD). High frequency (HF) power and the ratio of low to high frequency power (LF/HF) were used as indices of vagal modulation and sympathovagal balance. HF power adjusted for baseline differences decreased significantly during the expedition, indicating a gradual reduction in vagal tone. LF/HF powers ratio progressively shifted toward a sympathetic predominance reaching statistical significance in the final trimester (August to October) relative to the first trimester (February to April). This effect was particularly pronounced in women. The depression of cardio-vagal tone and the shift toward a sympathetic predominance observed throughout the overwintering suggest a long-term cardiac autonomic modulation in response to isolation and confinement during Antartic overwintering.

Abstract
This study sought to determine whether a 6-week physical rehabilitation programme has a measurable influence on heart rate responsiveness to changing metabolic demand in patients with pulmonary fibrosis. Fifteen individuals (13 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and two with pulmonary fibrosis associated with rheumatoid disease) underwent assessments of physical function (6-min walk test), ventilatory function (spirometry), and cardio-respiratory function (respiratory gas analysis and electrocardiogram [ECG] recording during a protocol consisting of periods of rest, incremental bicycle exercise to maximal effort, and post-exercise recovery). RR (beat-to-beat cardiac intervals) data were derived from the ECG and used to quantify (a) heart rate variability (HRV) and (b) cardiac acceleration (AC) and deceleration capacities (DC) (via phase rectified signal averaging). Following the rehabilitation programme, heart rate was elevated by 11%–18% during exercise and recovery states. HRV was not statistically influenced by rehabilitation during any stage of the assessment protocol; however, qualitative changes were apparent with HRV increasing by 68%–75% during all stages of the protocol. Statistically, AC and DC were similar pre- and postrehabilitation (AC=−2.7 and −3.2 msec; DC=2.3 and 3.2 msec, respectively) but again we observed qualitative improvements in these indices of 19% and 38%, respectively. These results provide initial evidence that physical rehabilitation improves heart rate dynamics (via modulation of autonomic control of heart rate) in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients, even when respiratory and physical functions are unchanged or diminished.

Abstract
Heart rhythm complexity analysis has been shown to have good prognostic power in patients with cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to analyze serial changes in heart rhythm complexity from the acute to chronic phase of acute myocardial infarction (MI). We prospectively enrolled 27 patients with anterior wall ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and 42 control subjects. In detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), the patients had significantly lower DFAα2 in the acute stage (within 72 hours) and lower DFAα1 at 3 months and 12 months after MI. In multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis, the patients had a lower slope 5 in the acute stage, which then gradually increased during the follow-up period. The areas under the MSE curves for scale 1 to 5 (area 1–5) and 6 to 20 (area 6–20) were lower throughout the chronic stage. Area 6–20 had the greatest discriminatory power to differentiate the post-MI patients (at 1 year) from the controls. In both the net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement models, MSE parameters significantly improved the discriminatory power of the linear parameters to differentiate the post-MI patients from the controls. In conclusion, the patients with STEMI had serial changes in cardiac complexity.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the application of the principal component analysis (PCA) technique on power spectral density function (PSD) of consecutive normal RR intervals (iRR) aiming at assessing its ability to discriminate healthy women according to age groups: young group (20-25 year-old) and middle-aged group (40-60 year-old). Thirty healthy and non-smoking female volunteers were investigated (13 young [mean ± SD (median): 22·8 ± 0·9 years (23·0)] and 17 Middle-aged [51·7 ± 5·3 years (50·0)]). The iRR sequence was collected during ten minutes, breathing spontaneously, in supine position and in the morning, using a heart rate monitor. After selecting an iRR segment (5 min) with the smallest variance, an auto regressive model was used to estimate the PSD. Five principal component coefficients, extracted from PSD signals, were retained for analysis according to the Mahalanobis distance classifier. A threshold established by logistic regression allowed the separation of the groups with 100% specificity, 83·2% sensitivity and 93·3% total accuracy. The PCA appropriately classified two groups of women in relation to age (young and Middle-aged) based on PSD analysis of consecutive normal RR intervals.

Abstract
PURPOSE Endurance exercise is associated with high cardiac vagal tone, but how the cardiac autonomic control correlates with shorter anaerobic performances is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate how autonomic modulations of heart rate (HR) variability (V) correlate with performances of short- (<1 min) and very short (<30 s) duration in elite athletes. METHOD Thirteen male swimmers, national-level crawl specialists in short (100-m) and very short (50-m) distances, were enrolled. HR was recorded during 15-min supine rest: (1) in the morning after wake up, (2) in the afternoon before sprint-oriented training sessions, (3) few minutes after training (first recovery phase after swimming cooldown). Heart rate variability (HRV) vagal and sympatho/vagal indices were calculated in time, frequency and complexity domains. Correlations of best seasonal times on 100- or 50-m distances with HRV indices and the velocity at blood lactate accumulation onset (V OBLA) were calculated. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Vagal indices were highest in the morning where they positively correlated with very short-distance times (higher the index, worse is the 50-m performance). Sympatho/vagal indices were highest after training where they negatively correlated with short-distance times (higher the index, better is the 100-m performance). V OBLA did not correlate with the performances. Therefore, autonomic HRV indices and not V OBLA predict short and very short, most anaerobic, performances. Results also suggest that a strong cardiac vagal control has no effect on short performances and is even detrimental to very short performances, and that the capacity to powerfully increase the sympathetic tone during exercise may improve short, but not very short performances.

Abstract
In recent years there has been substantial support for heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) as a treatment for a variety of disorders and for performance enhancement (Gevirtz, 2013). Since conditions as widely varied as asthma and depression seem to respond to this form of cardiorespiratory feedback training, the issue of possible mechanisms becomes more salient. The most supported possible mechanism is the strengthening of homeostasis in the baroreceptor (Vaschillo et al., 2002; Lehrer et al., 2003). Recently, the effect on the vagal afferent pathway to the frontal cortical areas has been proposed. In this article, we review these and other possible mechanisms that might explain the positive effects of HRVB.

Abstract
This study estimated the heritability of 24-h heart rate variability (HRV) measures, while considering ceiling effects on HRV at low heart rates during the night. HRV was indexed by the standard deviation of all valid interbeat intervals (SDNN), the root mean square of differences between valid, successive interbeat intervals (RMSSD), and peak-valley respiratory sinus arrhythmia (pvRSA). Sleep and waking levels of cardiac vagal control were assessed in 1,003 twins and 285 of their non-twin siblings. Comparable heritability estimates were found for SDNN (46%-53%), RMSSD (49%-54%), and pvRSA (48%-57%) during the day and night. A nighttime ceiling effect was revealed in 10.7% of participants by a quadratic relationship between mean pvRSA and the interbeat interval. Excluding these participants did not change the heritability estimates. The genetic factors influencing ambulatory pvRSA, RMSSD, and SDNN largely overlap. These results suggest that gene-finding studies may pool the different cardiac vagal indices and that exclusion of participants with low heart rates is not required.

Abstract
Assuming that RR time-series behave as a fractionally differintegrated Gaussian process, García-González et al. (2003) recently proposed new indices for quantifying variability and structure in RR data. One of these was the 'fractional noise quantifier' (fnQ), measuring the departure of an RR time-series from a monofractal structure (i.e. a measure of its multifractality). Sixty-nine participants (aged = 34·5 ± 12·4 years, body mass index (BMI) = 23·9 ± 2·9 kg m(-2) , maximal oxygen uptake rate (V˙O2peak ) = 42·4 ± 10·9 ml min(-1) kg(-1) , 39 males) provided continuous beat-to-beat ECG recordings for a 24-h period. Fractional differintegration was used to quantify fnQ, and heart rate variability was calculated in the time domain. All variables were evaluated during consecutive 1-h periods and also during four 6-h blocks corresponding to morning, afternoon, evening and night periods. Apart from RR, circadian trends in all variables were independent of gender (P = 0·11-0·59). Apart from fnQ, all variables exhibited circadian variation (0·0005<P<0·012). Although fnQ was statistically uniform during the 24-h period, it showed a trend towards elevated values during evening and night. The main finding of this study was that fnQ was elevated by around 10% during the evening and night, although this was not statistically significant. This suggests that the structure of RR time-series in healthy individuals is most strongly 'multifractal' during evening and night periods. fnQ appears to be a plausible surrogate measure of multifractality in RR time-series.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The risk for cardiovascular diseases is elevated in persons with bipolar disorder. However, it remains unknown how much of this excess risk is secondary to pharmacologic treatment. We tested the hypothesis that current and cumulative antipsychotic drug exposure is associated with increased cardiovascular risk as indicated by lower heart rate variability (HRV) and increased blood pressure variability (BPV). METHODS Fifty-five individuals with bipolar disorder (33 ± 7 years; 67% female) underwent noninvasive electrocardiogram assessment of time-domain and frequency-domain HRV, as well as BPV analysis. Medication histories were obtained through systematic review of pharmacy records for the past 5 years. RESULTS Current antipsychotic exposure was associated with lower standard deviation of NN intervals. Second-generation antipsychotics were associated with lower standard deviation of NN intervals and root mean square of successive differences. There was no significant relationship between 5-year antipsychotic exposure and HRV in subjects with bipolar disorder. Exploratory analysis revealed a possible link between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor exposure and increased low-frequency spectral HRV. CONCLUSIONS Current antipsychotic use (particularly second-generation antipsychotics with high affinities for the D2S receptor) is associated with reduced autonomic-mediated variability of the HR. The absence of an association with cumulative exposure suggests that the effects are acute in onset and may therefore relate more to altered autonomic function than structural cardiovascular abnormalities. Future studies should prospectively examine effects of these antipsychotics on autonomic function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deceleration capacity (DC) of heart rate is a measure of cardiac vagal modulation. This study introduced a DC adaptation (Modified Index) that measured the velocity of change in the phase-rectified signal averaging curve, and assessed its ability to discriminate athletes from controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Modified Index was compared to Standard DC approach in a prospective case-control study. Subjects were classified according to maximal metabolic equivalents as the control group (CG) and athlete group (AG). The Modified Index was compared to Standard DC and classical approaches (RMSSD and HF) by the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) using 10,000 bootstraps. RESULTS In Standard DC and Modified Index bootstrap median values were (ms), respectively, 11.80 and 17.94 (p<0.01) in CG, and 25.98 and 45.62 in AG (p<0.01). AUC (mean±SD) was 0.70±0.12 for Standard DC and 0.96±0.04 for Modified Index (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Modified Index appropriately discriminates athletes from healthy sedentary subjects.

Abstract
Multifractal properties of electrocardiographic inter-beat (RR) time-series offer insight into its long-term correlation structure, independently of RR variability. Here we quantify multifractal characteristics of RR data during 24-h diurnal-nocturnal activity in healthy participants. We tested the hypotheses that (1) age, gender and aerobic fitness influence RR multifractal properties, and that (2) these are influenced by circadian variation. Seventy adults (39 males) aged 19–58 years and of various fitness levels were monitored using 24-h ECG. Participants were dichotomized by median age and fitness for sub-group analysis. Gender and fitness were independent of age (p = 0.1, p > 0.5). Younger/older group ages were substantially different (p < 0.0005) and were independent of gender and fitness. Multifractality was quantified using the probability spectrum of Hölder exponents (h), from which modal h (h*) and the full-width and half-widths at half-maximum measures (FWHM, HWHM+, and HWHM−) were derived. FWHM decreased (p = 0.004) and h* increased (p = 0.011) in older people, indicating diminished long-range RR correlations and weaker anti-persistent behavior. Anti-persistent correlation (h*) was strongest in the youngest/fittest individuals and weakest in the oldest/least fit individuals (p = 0.015). Long-range correlation (HWHM+/FWHM) was strongest in the fittest males and weakest in the least fit females (p = 0.007–0.033). Multifractal RR characteristics in our healthy participants showed strong age-dependence, with diminished long-range anti-persistent correlation in older people. Circadian variation of these characteristics was influenced by fitness and gender: fitter males and females of all ages had the greatest degree of multifractality or long-range order. Multifractal characterization appears to be a useful method for exploring the physiological basis of long-term correlation structure in RR time-series as well as the benefits thereon of physical fitness training.
