ZIF-8 Nanoparticle: A Valuable Tool for Improving Gene Delivery in Sperm-Mediated Gene Transfer

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with unique characteristics that make them well-suited for drug delivery and gene therapy applications. Among the MOFs, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has emerged as a promising candidate for delivering exogenous DNA into cells. However, the potential of ZIF-8 as a vector for sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT) has not yet been thoroughly explored.This investigation aimed to explore the potential of ZIF-8 as a vector for enhancing genetic transfer and transgenesis rates by delivering exogenous DNA into sperm cells. To test this hypothesis, we employed ZIF-8 to deliver a plasmid expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) into mouse sperm cells and evaluated the efficiency of DNA uptake. Our findings demonstrate that ZIF-8 can efficiently load and deliver exogenous DNA into mouse sperm cells, increasing GFP expression in vitro. These results suggest that ZIF-8 is a valuable tool for enhancing genetic transfer in SMGT, with important implications for developing genetically modified animals for research and commercial purposes. Additionally, our study highlights the potential of ZIF-8 as a novel class of vectors for gene delivery in reproductive biology.Overall, our study provides a foundation for further research into using ZIF-8 and other MOFs as gene delivery systems in reproductive biology and underscores the potential of these materials as promising vectors for gene therapy and drug delivery.

Starfruit-Shaped Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks: From 3D Intermediates to 2D Nanosheet Petals with Enhanced Catalytic Activity

We present the fabrication of a novel Starfruit-shaped metal-organic framework (SMOF) composed of zirconium and Tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine linkers. The SMOF exhibits a unique morphology with edge-sharing two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet petals. Our investigation unravels a captivating transformation process, wherein three-dimensional (3D) shuttle-shaped MOFs form initially and subsequently evolve into 2D nanosheet-based SMOF structures. The distinct morphology of SMOF showcases superior catalytic activity in detoxifying G-type nerve agent and blister agent simulants, surpassing that of its 3D counterparts. This discovery of the 3D-to-2D transition growth pathway unlocks exciting opportunities for exploring novel strategies in advanced MOF nanostructure development, not only for catalysis but also for various other applications.

Recent Progress in 2D Metal-Organic Framework-Related Materials

2D metal-organic frameworks-based (2D MOF-related) materials benefit from variable topological structures, plentiful open active sites, and high specific surface areas, demonstrating promising applications in gas storage, adsorption and separation, energy conversion, and other domains. In recent years, researchers have innovatively designed multiple strategies to avoid the adverse effects of conventional methods on the synthesis of high-quality 2D MOFs. This review focuses on the latest advances in creative synthesis techniques for 2D MOF-related materials from both the top-down and bottom-up perspectives. Subsequently, the strategies are categorized and summarized for synthesizing 2D MOF-related composites and their derivatives. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted faced by 2D MOF-related materials and some targeted recommendations are put forward to inspire researchers to investigate more effective synthesis methods.

Novel magnetic nanocomposites BiFeO3/Cu(BDC) for efficient dye removal

In this study, bismuth ferrite nanoparticles and metal-organic framework, Cu(BDC), were prepared by microwave-assisted combustion in solid state and ultrasound-assisted method, respectively. To enhance the properties of bismuth ferrite nanoparticles and Cu(BDC), we form them as their composite through microwave and ultrasonic probe strategies. Various analyses, including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, DRS, VSM, and so on, were applied to verify the synthesis accuracy. Then, the catalytic performances of the nanoparticles and the as-prepared nanocomposites were evaluated through photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of the as-synthesized materials was assessed toward the Congo red removal from wastewater. All the results prove that the proposed nanocomposite can be an acceptable candidate for eliminating contaminants from wastewater. The electrochemical properties of bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3/Cu(BDC) nanocomposite 1, and BiFeO3/Cu(BDC) nanocomposite 2 have been studied by cyclic voltammetry.

An introductory review on advanced multifunctional materials

This review summarizes the applications of some of the advanced materials. It included the synthesis of several nanoparticles such as metal oxide nanoparticles (e.g., Fe₃O₄, ZnO, ZrOSO₄, MoO_3-x, CuO, AgFeO₂, Co₃O₄, CeO₂, SiO₂, and CuFeO₂); metal hydroxide nanosheets (e.g., Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O, Zn(OH)(NO₃)·H₂O, and Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂); metallic nanoparticles (Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt); carbon-based nanomaterials (graphene, graphene oxide (GO), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), and carbon dots (CDs)); biopolymers (cellulose, nanocellulose, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs), and chitosan); organic polymers (e.g. covalent-organic frameworks (COFs)); and hybrid materials (e.g. metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)). Most of these materials were applied in several fields such as environmental-based technologies (e.g., water remediation, air purification, gas storage), energy (production of hydrogen, dimethyl ether, solar cells, and supercapacitors), and biomedical sectors (sensing, biosensing, cancer therapy, and drug delivery). They can be used as efficient adsorbents and catalysts to remove emerging contaminants e.g., inorganic (i.e., heavy metals) and organic (e.g., dyes, antibiotics, pesticides, and oils in water via adsorption. They can be also used as catalysts for catalytic degradation reactions such as redox reactions of pollutants. They can be used as filters for air purification by capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They can be used for hydrogen production via water splitting, alcohol oxidation, and hydrolysis of NaBH₄. Nanomedicine for some of these materials was also included being an effective agent as an antibacterial, nanocarrier for drug delivery, and probe for biosensing.

MOFs-derived hollow Copper-based sulfides for optimized electromagnetic behaviors

The preparation of hollow materials is one of the most feasible ways to obtain efficient electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers. Herein, using the copper-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOF-74) as templates, hollow copper-based sulfides with various morphologies (rod-like, cubic, and dodecahedral) were designed and synthesized. The outer Cu₂S and/or Cu₃₁S₁₆ shell possesses excellent electronic conductivity and abundant heterogeneous interfaces, while the inner hollow cavity endows the absorbers with lightweight characteristics and good impedance matching according to the Maxwell-Garnett (MG) theory. Accordingly, the effective absorption bandwidth reaches 6.2 GHz at 2.3 mm with 20 wt% filler loading, exhibiting superior performance compared with the vast majority of previous MOFs derived absorbers. Furthermore, our study can serve a guide to construct hollow structured nanocomposites to tune electromagnetic parameters and strengthen EMW absorption properties.

Improvement of Transfection with PepFects Using Organic and Inorganic Materials

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) are a promising non-viral vector for gene and drug delivery. CPPs exhibit high cell transfection, and are biocompatible. They can be also conjugated with organic and inorganic nanomaterials, such as magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), graphene oxide (GO), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and chitosan. Nanomaterials offered a high specific surface area and provided relatively straightforward methods to be modified with biomolecules including CPPs and oligonucleotides (ONs). Novel nanomaterials conjugates with CPP/ONs complexes are therefore of interest for cell transfection with high efficiency. In this chapter, we described a summary of the non-viral vectors consisting of CPPs and nanomaterials. The book chapter also included a protocol to generate hybrid biomaterials consisting of CPPs and nanoparticles (NPs) for the delivery of oligonucleotides. The conjugation of NPs with CPPs serves as an effective platform for gene therapy with high cell transfection efficiency. The protocol is simple, offers high cell transfection compared to the CPPs-ONs complexes, and can be used for further improvements using external stimuli.

Facile Synthesis of Metal-Organic Layers with High Catalytic Performance toward Detoxification of a Chemical Warfare Agent Simulant

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic layer (MOL) materials are highly desired against chemical warfare agents (CWAs). However, the rapid synthesis of 2DMOLs with open metal sites in a single step is very challenging. Herein, a facile bottom-up method for synthesizing MOLs with microwave assistance is applied to produce Zr/Hf-BTB MOLs, composed of six-connected M₆O₄(OH)₄¹²⁺ and the tritopic carboxylate ligand 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (BTB). The synthesis and ligand exchange steps can be combined into a single step to yield MOLs with active open sites directly. The as-synthesized MOLs demonstrate excellent catalytic performance toward the degradation of a CWA simulant. The theoretical calculations confirm that the high catalytic activity is due to the formate groups coordinated to the metal nodes being replaced by hydroxyl groups. The present work not only develops a method for the fast synthesis of 2D MOLs with active open metal sites in a single step but also provides a first demonstration for the application of 2D metal coordination materials in CWA protection.

Study on Denitration Performance of Solid Waste Blast Furnace Slag Catalysts under Different Preparation Processes

In this article, blast furnace slag, a high-yield industrial solid waste, was taken as the research object and it was used as the main material. Bentonite was used as the binder, and water was added to shape the blast furnace slag into a small column. The denitration catalyst was prepared using different methods, its denitration performances were compared and analyzed, and the best preparation method and process parameters were screened. Results showed that bentonite will clearly improve denitration performance, and 4:1 blast furnace slag and bentonite was selected as the molding ratio to reduce the effect of bentonite on its performance, combined with the hardness and surface adhesion of the prepared carrier. Separately, the catalysts were prepared using citric acid impregnation, hydrothermal decomposition, and mixing method, and active Mn was loaded. Among them, the hydrothermal decomposition method cannot completely decompose in a closed kettle, resulting in a lower denitration performance. The catalyst prepared using the mixing method is superior to that prepared using the impregnation method because the active component prepared by the former was more uniformly dispersed, and simple and easy to operate, which can meet the needs of the excess denitration catalysts of small enterprises.

Recent development of two-dimensional metal-organic framework derived electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen electrocatalysis

Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts with unique nanostructures is of great significance for improved electrocatalytic reactions, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted recent attention because of their unique dimension-related properties, such as ultrathin thickness, large specific surface area, and abundant accessible active sites that can act as good precursors for the derivation of a variety of nanocomposites as active materials in electrocatalysis and energy-related devices. In this review, we present recent developments in 2D MOF-derived nanomaterials for hydrogen and oxygen reactions in overall water-splitting and rechargeable Zn-air batteries. The advantages of various synthetic strategies are summarized and discussed in detail. Finally, we discuss the main challenges and future perspectives of the development of 2D MOF-derived electrocatalysts.

MnOx-CuOx cordierite catalyst for selective catalytic oxidation of the NO at low temperature

Low-value solid waste cordierite honeycomb ceramics were used as carrier of SCO denitration catalyst, and the active component was supported by the impregnation method to improve the performance of the catalyst. Firstly, the effect of calcination conditions on the denitration performance of the Mn-loaded cordierite catalyst was studied for the cordierite-loaded active component MnO_X. Secondly, the preferred catalyst was reloaded with another active component to further improve its denitration performance; the bimetal ratios were affected by the denitration performance, which was, finally, characterized by XRD, XPS, and SEM. The result shows the following: (1) Mn-loaded cordierite prepared at 450 °C for 3 h has a good denitration effect; (2) the MnO_X-CuO_X/CR catalyst is superior to MnO_X-FeO_X/CR, MnO_X-CoO_X/CR, and MnO_X-CeO_X/CR; (3) the MnO₂ crystal form in the single metal-supported catalyst plays a major role, and Cu₂Mn₃O₈ in the bimetallic catalyst affects the performance and activity of the catalyst. Zirconium Oxide Sulfate-Carbon (ZrOSO4@C) Derived from Carbonized UiO-66 for Selective Production of Dimethyl Ether

Methanol dehydration process to dimethyl ether (DME) has been considered as one of the main routes to produce clean fuel, that is, DME. Thus, efficient catalysts are highly required for selective production of DME. Herein, UiO-66 was used as a precursor for the synthesis of zirconium oxide sulfate embedded carbon (ZrOSO₄@C). The synthesis method involves a one-step carbonization of UiO-66 in the presence of sulfuric acid (10 wt %). Material characterizations using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy approve the formation of the high crystalline phase of ZrOSO₄@C. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirm the mesopore structure of the materials. Acidity analysis using pyridine temperature-programmed desorption and isopropanol dehydration corroborates that ZrOSO₄@C has weak and intermediate acidic sites making ZrOSO₄@C an effective catalyst for methanol dehydration to DME. The materials offered full conversion (100%) with excellent selectivity (100%) at a relatively low temperature (250 °C). The catalyst exhibited a long-term stability for 120 h. Based on these results, DME is produced efficiently in terms of conversion, selectivity, and long-term stability.

Hierarchical porous ZIF-8 for hydrogen production via the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride

Terephthalic acid (TPA) is used for the synthesis of hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate framework (HPZIF-8) which shows high catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of NaBH₄ (2333 mL_H2 min⁻¹ g_cat⁻¹).
