Competing Magnetic Interactions and Field-Induced Metamagnetic Transition in Highly Crystalline Phase-Tunable Iron Oxide Nanorods

The inherent existence of multi phases in iron oxide nanostructures highlights the significance of them being investigated deliberately to understand and possibly control the phases. Here, the effects of annealing at 250 °C with a variable duration on the bulk magnetic and structural properties of high aspect ratio biphase iron oxide nanorods with ferrimagnetic Fe₃O₄ and antiferromagnetic α-Fe₂O₃ are explored. Increasing annealing time under a free flow of oxygen enhanced the α-Fe₂O₃ volume fraction and improved the crystallinity of the Fe₃O₄ phase, identified in changes in the magnetization as a function of annealing time. A critical annealing time of approximately 3 h maximized the presence of both phases, as observed via an enhancement in the magnetization and an interfacial pinning effect. This is attributed to disordered spins separating the magnetically distinct phases which tend to align with the application of a magnetic field at high temperatures. The increased antiferromagnetic phase can be distinguished due to the field-induced metamagnetic transitions observed in structures annealed for more than 3 h and was especially prominent in the 9 h annealed sample. Our controlled study in determining the changes in volume fractions with annealing time will enable precise control over phase tunability in iron oxide nanorods, allowing custom-made phase volume fractions in different applications ranging from spintronics to biomedical applications.

Elemental (im-)miscibility determines phase formation of multinary nanoparticles co-sputtered in ionic liquids

Non-equilibrium synthesis methods allow the alloying of bulk-immiscible elements into multinary nanoparticles, which broadens the design space for new materials. Whereas sputtering onto solid substrates can combine immiscible elements into thin film solid solutions, this is not clear for sputtering of nanoparticles in ionic liquids. Thus, the suitability of sputtering in ionic liquids for producing nanoparticles of immiscible elements is investigated by co-sputtering the systems Au-Cu (miscible), Au-Ru and Cu-Ru (both immiscible), and Au-Cu-Ru on the surface of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [Bmim][(Tf)₂N]. The sputtered nanoparticles were analyzed to obtain (i) knowledge concerning the general formation process of nanoparticles when sputtering onto ionic liquid surfaces and (ii) information, if alloy nanoparticles of immiscible elements can be synthesized as well as (iii) evidence if the Hume-Rothery rules for solid solubility are valid for sputtered nanoparticles. Nanoparticle characteristics were found to depend on elemental miscibility: (1) nanoparticles from immiscible elemental combinations showed bigger mean diameters ranging from (3.3 ± 1.4) nm to (5.0 ± 1.7) nm in contrast to mean diameters of nanoparticles from elemental combinations with at least one miscible element pair ((1.7 ± 0.7) nm to (1.8 ± 0.6) nm). (2) Nanoparticles from immiscible combinations showed compositions with one element strongly dominating the ratio and very narrow differences between the highest and lowest fraction of the dominating element (Cu₉₄Ru₆ to Cu₁₀₀Ru₀; Au₉₆Ru₄ to Au₉₉Ru₁) in contrast to the other compositions (Au₆₄Cu₃₆ to Au₈₁Cu₁₉; Au₈₃Cu₁₃Ru₄/Au₇₅Cu₂₂Ru₃ to Au₈₇Cu₁₁Ru₂). Accompanying atomistic simulations using density-functional theory for clusters of different size and ordering confirm that the miscibility of Au-Cu and the immiscibility of Au-Ru and Cu-Ru govern the thermodynamic stability of the nanoparticles. Based on the matching experimental and theoretical results for the NP/IL-systems concerning NP stability, a formation model of multinary NPs in ILs was developed.

Compact Peptoid Molecular Brushes for Nanoparticle Stabilization

Controlling the interfaces and interactions of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) via tethered molecular moieties is crucial for NP applications in engineered nanomaterials, optics, catalysis, and nanomedicine. Despite a broad range of molecular types explored, there is a need for a flexible approach to rationally vary the chemistry and structure of these interfacial molecules for controlling NP stability in diverse environments, while maintaining a small size of the NP molecular shell. Here, we demonstrate that low-molecular-weight, bifunctional comb-shaped, and sequence-defined peptoids can effectively stabilize gold NPs (AuNPs). The generality of this robust functionalization strategy was also demonstrated by coating of silver, platinum, and iron oxide NPs with designed peptoids. Each peptoid (PE) is designed with varied arrangements of a multivalent AuNP-binding domain and a solvation domain consisting of oligo-ethylene glycol (EG) branches. Among designs, a peptoid (PE5) with a diblock structure is demonstrated to provide a superior nanocolloidal stability in diverse aqueous solutions while forming a compact shell (∼1.5 nm) on the AuNP surface. We demonstrate by experiments and molecular dynamics simulations that PE5-coated AuNPs (PE5/AuNPs) are stable in select organic solvents owing to the strong PE5 (amine)-Au binding and solubility of the oligo-EG motifs. At the vapor-aqueous interface, we show that PE5/AuNPs remain stable and can self-assemble into ordered 2D lattices. The NP films exhibit strong near-field plasmonic coupling when transferred to solid substrates.

Narrow Segment Driven Multistep Magnetization Reversal Process in Sharp Diameter Modulated Fe67Co33 Nanowires

Magnetic nanomaterials are of great interest due to their potential use in data storage, biotechnology, or spintronic based devices, among others. The control of magnetism at such scale entails complexing the nanostructures by tuning their composition, shape, sizes, or even several of these properties at the same time, in order to search for new phenomena or optimize their performance. An interesting pathway to affect the dynamics of the magnetization reversal in ferromagnetic nanostructures is to introduce geometrical modulations to act as nucleation or pinning centers for the magnetic domain walls. Considering the case of 3D magnetic nanowires, the modulation of the diameter across their length can produce such effect as long as the segment diameter transition is sharp enough. In this work, diameter modulated Fe₆₇Co₃₃ ferromagnetic nanowires have been grown into the prepatterned diameter modulated nanopores of anodized Al₂O₃ membranes. Their morphological and compositional characterization was carried out by electron-based microscopy, while their magnetic behavior has been measured on both the nanowire array as well as for individual bisegmented nanowires after being released from the alumina template. The magnetic hysteresis loops, together with the evaluation of First Order Reversal Curve diagrams, point out that the magnetization reversal of the bisegmented FeCo nanowires is carried out in two steps. These two stages are interpreted by micromagnetic modeling, where a shell of the wide segment reverses its magnetization first, followed by the reversal of its core together with the narrow segment of the nanowire at once.

Magnetic Properties of a Ni Nanonet Grown in Superfluid Helium under Laser Irradiation

A nanonet consisting of ultrathin Ni nanowires (diameter <4 nm) and Ni nanoballs (diameter <20 nm) has been grown through laser ablation of a Ni target in superfluid helium. At a low Ni concentration, the nanonet consists mainly of nanowires and manifests a rectangular magnetic hysteresis loop, while an increase in the Ni concentration results in an increase in both the concentration and diameter of the nanoballs. A decrease in hysteresis loop rectangularity is observed as the concentration of the nanoball increases. We show that the composition of the system can be determined from the changes in the magnetic hysteresis loop and the temperature dependence of magnetization. The significance of the work consists of the observation of evolution of magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic nanonet, while its composition varies from nanowires to a combined nanowires–nanoballs system.

Unraveling Structural Information of Turkevich Synthesized Plasmonic Gold-Silver Bimetallic Nanoparticles

For the synthesis of gold-silver bimetallic nanoparticles, the Turkevich method has been the state-of-the-art method for several decades. It is presumed that this procedure results in a homogeneous alloy, although this has been debatable for many years. In this work, it is shown that neither a full alloy, nor a perfect core-shell particle is formed but rather a core-shell-like particle with altering metal composition along the radial direction. In-depth wet-chemical experiments are performed in combination with advanced transmission electron microscopy, including energy-dispersive X-ray tomography, and finite element method modeling to support the observations. From the electron tomography results, the core-shell structure can be clearly visualized and the spatial distribution of gold and silver atoms can be quantified. Theoretical simulations are performed to demonstrate that even though UV-vis spectra show only one plasmon band, this still originates from core-shell type structures. The simulations also indicate that the core-shell morphology does not so much affect the location of the plasmon band, but mainly results in significant band broadening. Wet-chemistry experiments provide the evidence that the synthesis pathway starts with gold enriched alloy cores, and later on in the synthesis mainly silver is incorporated to end up with a silver enriched alloy shell.

Synthesis of Alkanethiolate-Capped Metal Nanoparticles Using Alkyl Thiosulfate Ligand Precursors: A Method to Generate Promising Reagents for Selective Catalysis

Evaluation of metal nanoparticle catalysts functionalized with well-defined thiolate ligands can be potentially important because such systems can provide a spatial control in the reactivity and selectivity of catalysts. A synthetic method utilizing Bunte salts (sodium S-alkylthiosulfates) allows the formation of metal nanoparticles (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt, and Ir) capped with alkanethiolate ligands. The catalysis studies on Pd nanoparticles show a strong correlation between the surface ligand structure/composition and the catalytic activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation/isomerization of alkenes, dienes, trienes, and allylic alcohols. The high selectivity of Pd nanoparticles is driven by the controlled electronic properties of the Pd surface limiting the formation of Pd⁻alkene adducts (or intermediates) necessary for (additional) hydrogenation. The synthesis of water soluble Pd nanoparticles using ω-carboxylate-S-alkanethiosulfate salts is successfully achieved and these Pd nanoparticles are examined for the hydrogenation of various unsaturated compounds in both homogeneous and heterogeneous environments. Alkanethiolate-capped Pt nanoparticles are also successfully synthesized and further investigated for the hydrogenation of various alkynes to understand their geometric and electronic surface properties. The high catalytic activity of activated terminal alkynes, but the significantly low activity of internal alkynes and unactivated terminal alkynes, are observed for Pt nanoparticles.

Design of Optimally Stable Molecular Coatings for Fe-Based Nanoparticles in Aqueous Environments

Magnetic nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical and oil-well applications in aqueous, often harsh environments. The pursuit for high-saturation magnetization together with high stability of the molecular coating that prevents agglomeration and oxidation remains an active research area. Here, we report a detailed analysis of the criteria for the stability of molecular coatings in aqueous environments along with extensive first-principles calculations for magnetite, which has been widely used, and cementite, a promising emerging candidate. A key result is that the simple binding energies of molecules cannot be used as a definitive indicator of relative stability in a liquid environment. Instead, we find that H⁺ ions and water molecules facilitate the desorption of molecules from the surface. We further find that, because of differences in the geometry of crystal structures, molecules generally form stronger bonds on cementite surfaces than they do on magnetite surfaces. The net result is that molecular coatings of cementite nanoparticles are more stable. This feature, together with the better magnetic properties, makes cementite nanoparticles a promising candidate for biomedical and oil-well applications.

Preparation of Partially Poisoned Alkanethiolate-Capped Platinum Nanoparticles for Hydrogenation of Activated Terminal Alkynes

Stable and isolable alkanethiolate-stabilized Pt nanoparticles (PtNP) were synthesized using the two-phase thiosulfate method with sodium S-alkylthiosulfate as ligand precursor. The mechanistic formation of octanethiolate-capped PtNP (Pt-SC₈) from both sodium S-octylthiosulfate and 1-octanethiol ligands was investigated by using ¹H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, which revealed the formation of different Pt complexes as the reaction intermediates. The synthesis using S-octylthiosulfate ligand precursor produced Pt-SC₈ in higher yields than that using 1-octanethiol ligand. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by ¹H NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from ¹H NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy were consistent with the formation of stable and pure alkanethiolate-capped PtNP. TEM images of PtNP confirmed their small average core size (∼1.5 nm) and high monodispersity. The partially poisoned PtNP with thiolate monolayer ligands were further investigated for the hydrogenation of various alkynes to understand the organic ligands-induced geometric and electronic surface properties of colloidal Pt nanoparticle catalysts. The high catalytic activity of activated terminal alkynes, but the significantly low activity of internal alkynes and unactivated terminal alkynes, were observed under the mild reaction conditions (room temperature and atmospheric pressure). These results indicated that the presence of alkanethiolate ligands could decrease the coordination activity of PtNP surface especially for the bulkier and unactivated substrates.

Magnetic Gold Confined in Ordered Mesoporous Titania Thin Films: A Noble Approach for Magnetic Devices

In the past decade, the surprising magnetic behavior of gold nanoparticles has been reported. This unexpected property is mainly attributed both to size and surface effects. Mesoporous thin films are ideal matrices for metallic nanoparticles inclusion, because of their highly accessible and tailorable pore systems that lead to completely tunable chemical environments. Exploiting these features, we synthesized Au nanoparticles within mesoporous titania thin films (film thickness of ∼150 nm and pore diameter of ∼5 nm), and we studied their magnetic properties under confinement. Here, we present the results of the magnetization as a function of temperature and magnetic field for this system, which are consistent with the previously reported for free (unconfined) thiol-capped gold nanoparticles. The successful inclusion of stable magnetic Au nanoparticles within transparent mesoporous thin films opens the gates for the application of these nanocomposites in two-dimensional (2D) microdevices technology and magneto-optical devices.

Rotational properties of ferromagnetic nanoparticles driven by a precessing magnetic field in a viscous fluid

We study the deterministic and stochastic rotational dynamics of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in a precessing magnetic field. Our approach is based on the system of effective Langevin equations and on the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. Two key characteristics of the rotational dynamics, namely the average angular frequency of precession of nanoparticles and their average magnetization, are of interest. Using the Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations, we calculate both analytically and numerically these characteristics in the deterministic and stochastic cases, determine their dependence on the model parameters, and analyze in detail the role of thermal fluctuations.

Catalytic Properties of Unsupported Palladium Nanoparticle Surfaces Capped with Small Organic Ligands

This Minireview summarizes a variety of intriguing catalytic studies accomplished by employing unsupported, either solubilized or freely mobilized, and small organic ligand-capped palladium nanoparticles as catalysts. Small organic ligands are gaining more attention as nanoparticle stabilizers and alternates to larger organic supports, such as polymers and dendrimers, owing to their tremendous potential for a well-defined system with spatial control in surrounding environments of reactive surfaces. The nanoparticle catalysts are grouped depending on the type of surface stabilizers with reactive head groups, which include thiolate, phosphine, amine, and alkyl azide. Applications for the reactions such as hydrogenation, alkene isomerization, oxidation, and carbon-carbon cross coupling reactions are extensively discussed. The systems defined as "ligandless" Pd nanoparticle catalysts and solvent (e.g. ionic liquid)-stabilized Pd nanoparticle catalysts are not discussed in this review.

Properties of plasmonic arrays produced by pulsed-laser nanostructuring of thin Au films

A brief description of research advances in the area of short-pulse-laser nanostructuring of thin Au films is followed by examples of experimental data and a discussion of our results on the characterization of structural and optical properties of gold nanostructures. These consist of partially spherical or spheroidal nanoparticles (NPs) which have a size distribution (80 ± 42 nm) and self-organization characterized by a short-distance order (length scale ≈140 nm). For the NP shapes produced, an observably broader tuning range (of about 150 nm) of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band is obtained by renewal thin film deposition and laser annealing of the NP array. Despite the broadened SPR bands, which indicate damping confirmed by short dephasing times not exceeding 4 fs, the self-organized Au NP structures reveal quite a strong enhancement of the optical signal. This was consistent with the near-field modeling and micro-Raman measurements as well as a test of the electrochemical sensing capability.

Single electron tunneling in large scale nanojunction arrays with bisferrocene-nanoparticle hybrids

We report on the fabrication and single electron tunneling behaviour of large scale arrays of nanogap electrodes bridged by bisferrocene-gold nanoparticle hybrids (BFc-AuNP). Coulomb staircase was observed in the low temperature current-voltage curves measured on the junctions with asymmetric tunnel barriers. On the other hand, junctions with symmetric tunneling barrier exhibited mere nonlinear current voltage characteristics without discrete staircase. The experimental results agreed well with simulations based on the orthodox theory. The junction resistance showed thermally activated conduction behaviour at higher temperature. The overall voltage and temperature dependent results show that the transport behaviour of the large arrays of single particle devices obtained by a facile optical lithography and chemical etching process corresponds with the behaviour of single particle devices fabricated by other techniques like e-beam lithography and mechanical breaking methods.
