Seasonality of inundation in geographically isolated wetlands across the United States

A critically co-endangered feather louse Forficuloecus pezopori n. sp. (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) detected through conservation intervention for the western ground parrot Pezoporus flaviventris (Psittaculidae)

Forficuloecus pezopori Martin, Keatley & Ash n. sp. from the western ground parrot Pezoporus flaviventris North, 1911 (Psittaculidae) is proposed based on combined evidence from morphology and COI mitochondrial DNA. Phylogenetically, the new species is closest to its two known congeners from Western Australia: F. josephi Price, Johnson & Palma, 2008 from Bourke's parrot Neopsephotus bourkii (Gould, 1841) and the scarlet-chested parrot Neophema splendida (Gould, 1841), and F. palmai Guimarães, 1985 from the Australian ringneck parrot Barnardius zonarius (Shaw, 1805). Morphologically it is distinguishable by abdominal chaetotaxy and characters of the male genitalia, and is most similar to F. josephi and F. greeni Guimarães, 1985; the latter has no representative sequence data. Forficuloecus pezopori is the eleventh species of its genus and the only metazoan parasite known from P. flaviventris, which is among Australia's most endangered vertebrates. The new louse is apparently restricted to P. flaviventris and is therefore co-endangered, facing at least the same likelihood of extinction as its host. We recommend ongoing translocation and field monitoring efforts for P. flaviventris include monitoring but not treatment for lice infestations in otherwise healthy individuals, and that the care management plan for captive P. flaviventris considers that F. pezopori is similarly imperilled.

Climate Change Will Impact Surface Water Extents and Dynamics Across the Central United States

Climate change is projected to impact river, lake, and wetland hydrology, with global implications for the condition and productivity of aquatic ecosystems. We integrated Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 based algorithms to track monthly surface water extent (2017-2021) for 32 sites across the central United States (U.S.). Median surface water extent was highly variable across sites, ranging from 3.9% to 45.1% of a site. To account for landscape-based differences (e.g., water storage capacity, land use) in the response of surface water extents to meteorological conditions, individual statistical models were developed for each site. Future changes to climate were defined as the difference between 2006-2025 and 2061-2080 using MACA-CMIP5 (MACAv2-METDATA) Global Circulation Models. Time series of climate change adjusted surface water extents were projected. Annually, 19 of the 32 sites under RCP4.5 and 22 of the 32 sites under RCP8.5 were projected to show an average decline in surface water extent, with drying most consistent across the southeast central, southwest central, and midwest central U.S. Projected declines under surface water dry conditions at these sites suggest greater impacts of drought events are likely in the future. Projected changes were seasonally variable, with the greatest decline in surface water extent expected in summer and fall seasons. In contrast, many north central sites showed a projected increase in surface water in most seasons, relative to the 2017-2021 period, likely attributable to projected increases in winter and spring precipitation exceeding increases in projected temperature.

Mutilation of the tree of life via mass extinction of animal genera

Mass extinctions during the past 500 million y rapidly removed branches from the phylogenetic tree of life and required millions of years for evolution to generate functional replacements for the extinct (EX) organisms. Here we show, by examining 5,400 vertebrate genera (excluding fishes) comprising 34,600 species, that 73 genera became EX since 1500 AD. Beyond any doubt, the human-driven sixth mass extinction is more severe than previously assessed and is rapidly accelerating. The current generic extinction rates are 35 times higher than expected background rates prevailing in the last million years under the absence of human impacts. The genera lost in the last five centuries would have taken some 18,000 y to vanish in the absence of human beings. Current generic extinction rates will likely greatly accelerate in the next few decades due to drivers accompanying the growth and consumption of the human enterprise such as habitat destruction, illegal trade, and climate disruption. If all now-endangered genera were to vanish by 2,100, extinction rates would be 354 (average) or 511 (for mammals) times higher than background rates, meaning that genera lost in three centuries would have taken 106,000 and 153,000 y to become EX in the absence of humans. Such mutilation of the tree of life and the resulting loss of ecosystem services provided by biodiversity to humanity is a serious threat to the stability of civilization. Immediate political, economic, and social efforts of an unprecedented scale are essential if we are to prevent these extinctions and their societal impacts.

Using a novel two-stage strategy to characterize the spatial distribution of associations between temperature and COVID-19: A case study in the continental United States

BACKGROUND

Numerous studies have studied the association between daily average temperature (DAT) and daily COVID-19 confirmed cases, which show considerable heterogeneity, even opposite results, among different regions. Such heterogeneity suggests that characterizing the association on a large area scale would ignore the local variation, even obtain false results in some local regions. So, characterizing the spatial distribution of heterogeneous DAT-COVID-19 associations and exploring the causes plays an important role on making temperature-related region-specific intervention measures and early-warning systems.

METHODS

Aiming to characterize the spatial distribution of associations between DAT and COVID-19 confirmed cases in the continental United States, we proposed a novel two-stage strategy. In the first stage, we used the common stratified distributed lag nonlinear model to obtain the rough state-specific associations. In the second stage, conditional autoregression was used to spatially smooth the rough estimations. Furtherly, based on the idea, two modified strategies were used to investigate the time-varying associations and the modification effects derived from the vaccination campaign.

RESULTS

Around one-third of states exhibit no significant association between DAT and daily confirmed COVID-19 cases. Most of the remaining states present a low risk at low DAT and a high risk at high DAT, but several states present opposite associations. The average association curve presents a 'S' shape with positive association between -8 - 18 °C and keeping flat out of the range. An increased vaccination coverage rate will increase the risk when DAT < 12 °C, but slightly affect the risk when DAT > 12 °C.

CONCLUSION

A considerable spatial heterogeneity of DAT-COVID-19 associations exists in America and the average association curve presents a 'S' shape. The vaccination campaign significantly modifies the association when DAT is low, but only make a slight modification when DAT is high.
