Abstract
Bone implantation is one of the recognized and effective means of treating bone defects, but osteoporosis and bone tumor-related bone abnormalities have a series of problems such as susceptibility to infection, difficulty in healing, and poor therapeutic effect, which poses a great challenge to clinical medicine. Three-dimensional things may be printed using 3D printing. Researchers can feed materials through the printer layer by layer to create the desired shape for a 3D structure. It is widely employed in the healing of bone defects, and it is an improved form of additive manufacturing technology with prospective future applications. This review's objective is to provide an overview of the findings reports pertaining to 3D printing biopolymers in recent years, provide an overview of biopolymer materials and their composites with black phosphorus for 3D printing bone implants, and the characterization methods of composite materials are also summarized. In addition, summarizes 3D printing methods based on ink printing and laser printing, pointing out their special features and advantages, and provide a combination strategy of photothermal therapy and bone regeneration materials for black phosphorus-based materials. Finally, the associations between bone implant materials and immune cells, the bio-environment, as well as the 3D printing bone implants prospects are outlined.

Abstract
Robust materials in medical applications are sought after and researched, especially for 3D printing in bone tissue engineering. Poly[ε-caprolactone] (PCL) is a commonly used polymer for scaffolding and other medical uses. Its strength is a drawback compared to other polymers. Herein, PCL was mixed with hydroxyapatite (HAp). Composites were developed at various concentrations (0.0-8.0 wt. %, 2.0 step), aiming to enhance the strength of PCL with a biocompatible additive in bioplotting. Initially, pellets were derived from the shredding of filaments extruded after mixing PCL and HAp at predetermined quantities for each composite. Specimens were then manufactured by bioplotting 3D printing. The samples were tested for their thermal and rheological properties and were also mechanically, morphologically, and chemically examined. The mechanical properties included tensile and flexural investigations, while morphological and chemical examinations were carried out employing scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. The structure of the manufactured specimens was analyzed using micro-computed tomography with regard to both their dimensional deviations and voids. PCL/HAp 6.0 wt. % was the composite that showed the most enhanced mechanical (14.6% strength improvement) and structural properties, proving the efficiency of HAp as a reinforcement filler in medical applications.

Abstract
In the field of tissue engineering, 3D printed shape memory polymers (SMPs) are drawing increased interest. Understanding how these 3D printed SMPs degrade is critical for their use in the clinic, as small changes in material properties can significantly change how they behave after in vivo implantation. Degradation of 3D printed acrylated poly(glycerol-dodecanedioate) (APGD) was examined via in vitro hydrolytic, enzymatic, and in vivo subcutaneous implantation assays. Three APGD manufacturing modalities were assessed to determine differences in degradation. Material extrusion samples showed significantly larger mass and volume loss at 2 months, compared to lasercut and vat photopolymerization samples, under both enzymatic and in vivo degradation. Critically, melt transition temperatures of degraded PGD increased over time in vitro, but not in vivo. Histology of tissue surrounding APGD implants showed no significant signs of inflammation compared to controls, providing a promising outlook for use of 3D printed APGD devices in the clinic.

Abstract
Controlled degradation of biodegradable poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) trauma implants may increase interfragmentary loading which is known to accelerate fracture healing. Additive manufacturing allows us to tune the mechanical properties of PLGA scaffolds; however, little is known about this novel approach. The purpose of this study was to use in vitro and in vivo models to determine the degradative kinetics of additively manufactured test coupons fabricated with PLGA. We hypothesized that 1) increases in infill density would lead to improved initial mechanical properties, and 2) loss of mechanical properties would be constant as a function of time, regardless of implant design. Porous and solid test coupons were fabricated using 85:15 PLGA filament. Coupons were either incubated in serum or implanted subcutaneously in rats for up to 16 weeks. Samples were tested in tension, compression, torsion, and bending on a universal test frame. Variables of interest included, but were not limited to: stiffness, and ultimate force for each unique test. Infill density was the driving factor in test coupon mechanical properties, whereas differences in lattice architecture led to minimal changes. We observed moderate levels of degradation after 8 weeks, and significant decreases for all specimens after 16 weeks. Results from this study suggest substantial degradation of 3-D printed PLGA implants occurs during the 8- to 16-week window, which may be desirable for bone fracture repair applications. This study represents initial findings that will help us better understand the complicated interactions between overall implant design, porosity, and implant biodegradation.

Abstract
We propose an integrated methodology for the design and fabrication of 3D micromodels that are suitable for the pore-scale study of transport processes in macroporous materials. The micromodels, that bear the pore-scale characteristics of sandstone, such as porosity, mean pore size, etc, are designed following a stochastic reconstruction algorithm that allows for fine-tuning the porosity and the correlation length of the spatial distribution of the solid material. We then construct a series of 3D micromodels at very fine resolution (i.e. 16 μ m) using a state-of-the-art 3D printing infrastructure, specifically a ProJet MJP3600 3D printer, that utilizes the Material Jetting technology. Within the technical constraints of the 3D printer resolution, the fabricated micromodels represent scaled-up replicas of natural sandstones, that are suitable for the study of the scaling between the permeability, the porosity and the mean pore size. The REV- and pore-scale characteristics of the resulting physical micromodels are recovered using a combination of X-ray micro-CT and microfluidic studies. The experimental results are then compared with single-phase flow simulations at pore-scale and geostatistic models in order to determine the effects of the design parameters on the intrinsic permeability and the spatial correlation of the velocity profile. Our numerical and experimental measurements reveal an excellent match between the properties of the designed and fabricated 3D domains, thus demonstrating the robustness of the proposed methodology for the construction of 3D micromodels with fine-tuned and well-controlled pore-scale characteristics. Furthermore, a pore-scale numerical study over a wider range of 3D digital domain realizations reveals a very good match of the measured permeabilities with the predictions of the Kozeny-Carman formulation based on a single control parameter, k 0 , that is found to have a practically constant value for porosities ϕ ≥ 0.2 . This, in turn, enables us to customize the sample size to meet REV constraints, including enlarging pore morphology while considering the Reynolds number. It is also found that at lower porosities there is a significant increase in the fraction of the non-percolating pores, thus leading to different k 0 , as the porosity approaches a numerically determined critical porosity value, ϕ c , where the domain is no longer percolating.

Abstract
3D bioprinting has unlocked new possibilities for generating complex and functional tissues and organs. However, one of the greatest challenges lies in selecting the appropriate seed cells for constructing fully functional 3D artificial organs. Currently, there are no cell sources available that can fulfill all requirements of 3D bioprinting technologies, and each cell source possesses unique characteristics suitable for specific applications. In this review, we explore the impact of different 3D bioprinting technologies and bioink materials on seed cells, providing a comprehensive overview of the current landscape of cell sources that have been used or hold potential in 3D bioprinting. We also summarized key points to guide the selection of seed cells for 3D bioprinting. Moreover, we offer insights into the prospects of seed cell sources in 3D bioprinted organs, highlighting their potential to revolutionize the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Abstract
Bioprinting technologies have been extensively studied in literature to fabricate three-dimensional constructs for tissue engineering applications. However, very few examples are currently available on clinical trials using bioprinted products, due to a combination of technological challenges (i.e. difficulties in replicating the native tissue complexity, long printing times, limited choice of printable biomaterials) and regulatory barriers (i.e. no clear indication on the product classification in the current regulatory framework). In particular, quality control (QC) solutions are needed at different stages of the bioprinting workflow (including pre-process optimization, in-process monitoring, and post-process assessment) to guarantee a repeatable product which is functional and safe for the patient. In this context, machine learning (ML) algorithms can be envisioned as a promising solution for the automatization of the quality assessment, reducing the inter-batch variability and thus potentially accelerating the product clinical translation and commercialization. In this review, we comprehensively analyse the main solutions that are being developed in the bioprinting literature on QC enabled by ML, evaluating different models from a technical perspective, including the amount and type of data used, the algorithms, and performance measures. Finally, we give a perspective view on current challenges and future research directions on using these technologies to enhance the quality assessment in bioprinting.

Abstract
Coronary heart disease is serious harm to human health. Vascular scaffold implantation is the main treatment. Biodegradable polymers are widely used in vascular scaffolds for good biodegradability and biocompatibility. However, whether the mechanical properties and radial expansion ability can successfully implant the scaffold without acute elastic retraction remains to be further studied. Because of the unique deformation mechanism, shear resistance, and resilience, auxetic structures can effectively avoid the restenosis of degraded vascular scaffolds. Firstly, the plane isotropic and plane anisotropic auxetic structural scaffolds were designed. The control structures (traditional structures) scaffolds were taken as the contrast. PCL was used to prepare the vascular auxetic by 3D printing. The printing parameters of fused deposition 3D printing, such as printing temperature, printing speed, and printing pressure, were studied to determine the optimal printing parameters of PCL. A self-assembled cyclic tensile stress loading device was used to investigate the degradation behavior of different scaffolds under different sizes of cyclic tensile stress, such as surface morphology, pH changes, mass loss rate, and mechanical properties. The increase of stress, surface roughness, and mass loss rate of the scaffolds all showed an increasing trend. pH gradually decreased from the fifth week, and the decrease was proportional to the stress. A large level of stress loading intensifies the decline of elastic modulus and the ultimate strength of the scaffold. In conclusion, the increase of periodic tensile stress will accelerate the degradation of scaffolds, and the degradation behavior of scaffolds with different configurations is different. The degradation rate of dilatant scaffolds was higher than that of control scaffolds, and the degradation rate of anisotropic auxetic scaffolds was higher than that of isotropic auxetic scaffolds, which provides a theoretical reference for the application of auxetic structure in the degradation of vascular scaffolds.

Abstract
Rehabilitative capabilities of any tissue engineered scaffold rely primarily on the triad of (i) biomechanical properties such as mechanical properties and architecture, (ii) chemical behavior such as regulation of cytokine expression, and (iii) cellular response modulation (including their recruitment and differentiation). The closer the implant can mimic the native tissue, the better it can rehabilitate the damage therein. Among the available fabrication techniques, only 3D bioprinting (3DBP) can satisfactorily replicate the inherent heterogeneity of the host tissue. However, 3DBP scaffolds typically suffer from poor mechanical properties, thereby, driving the increased research interest in development of load-bearing 3DBP orthopedic scaffolds in recent years. Typically, these scaffolds involve multi-material 3D printing, comprising of at-least one bioink and a load-bearing ink; such that mechanical and biological requirements of the biomaterials are decoupled. Ensuring high cellular survivability and good mechanical properties are of key concerns in all these studies. 3DBP of such scaffolds is in early developmental stages, and research data from only a handful of preliminary animal studies are available, owing to limitations in print-capabilities and restrictive materials library. This article presents a topically focused review of the state-of-the-art, while highlighting aspects like available 3DBP techniques; biomaterials' printability; mechanical and degradation behavior; and their overall bone-tissue rehabilitative efficacy. This collection amalgamates and critically analyses the research aimed at 3DBP of load-bearing scaffolds for fulfilling demands of personalized-medicine. We highlight the recent-advances in 3DBP techniques employing thermoplastics and phosphate-cements for load-bearing applications. Finally, we provide an outlook for possible future perspectives of 3DBP for load-bearing orthopedic applications. Overall, the article creates ample foundation for future research, as it gathers the latest and ongoing research that scientists could utilize.

Abstract
The 3D printing process of fused deposition modelling is an attractive fabrication approach to create tissue-engineered bone substitutes to regenerate large mandibular bone defects, but often lacks desired surface porosity for enhanced protein adsorption and cell adhesion. Solvent-based printing leads to the spontaneous formation of micropores on the scaffold's surface upon solvent removal, without the need for further post processing. Our aim is to create and characterize porous scaffolds using a new formulation composed of mechanically stable poly(lactic-co-glycol acid) and osteoconductive β-tricalcium phosphate with and without the addition of elastic thermoplastic polyurethane prepared by solvent-based 3D-printing technique. Large-scale regenerative scaffolds can be 3D-printed with adequate fidelity and show porosity at multiple levels analysed via micro-computer tomography, scanning electron microscopy and N2 sorption. Superior mechanical properties compared to a commercially available calcium phosphate ink are demonstrated in compression and screw pull out tests. Biological assessments including cell activity assay and live-dead staining prove the scaffold's cytocompatibility. Osteoconductive properties are demonstrated by performing an osteogenic differentiation assay with primary human bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells. We propose a versatile fabrication process to create porous 3D-printed scaffolds with adequate mechanical stability and osteoconductivity, both important characteristics for segmental mandibular bone reconstruction.

Abstract
The creation of scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering has faced significant challenges in developing constructs that can provide sufficient biomechanical support and offer suitable degradation characteristics. Ideally, such tissue-engineering techniques necessitate the fabrication of scaffolds that mirror the mechanical characteristics of the articular cartilage while degrading safely without damaging the regenerating tissues. The aim of this study was to create porous, biomechanically comparable 3D-printed scaffolds made from Poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) 85:15 and to assess their degradation at physiological conditions 37 °C in pH 7.4 phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for up to 56 days. Furthermore, the effect of scaffold degradation on the cell viability and proliferation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (HBMSC) was evaluated in vitro. To assess the long-term degradation of the scaffolds, accelerated degradation tests were performed at an elevated temperature of 47 °C for 28 days. The results show that the fabricated scaffolds were porous with an interconnected architecture and had comparable biomechanical properties to native cartilage. The degradative changes indicated stable degradation at physiological conditions with no significant effect on the properties of the scaffold and biocompatibility of the scaffold to HBMSC. Furthermore, the accelerated degradation tests showed consistent degradation of the scaffolds even in the long term without the notable release of acidic byproducts. It is hoped that the fabrication and degradation characteristics of this scaffold will, in the future, translate into a potential medical device for cartilage tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Biofabrication is crucial in contemporary tissue engineering. The primary challenge in biofabrication lies in achieving simultaneous replication of both external organ geometries and internal structures. Particularly for organs with high oxygen demand, the incorporation of a vascular network, which is usually intricate, is crucial to enhance tissue viability, which is still a difficulty in current biofabrication technology. In this study, we address this problem by introducing an innovative three-dimensional (3D) printing strategy using a thermo-reversible supporting bath which can be easily removed by decreasing the temperature. This technology is capable of printing hydrated materials with diverse crosslinked mechanisms, encompassing gelatin, hyaluronate, Pluronic F-127, and alginate. Furthermore, the technology can replicate the external geometry of native tissues and organs from computed tomography data. The work also demonstrates the capability to print lines around 10 μm with a nozzle with a diameter of 60 μm due to the extra force exerted by the supporting bath, by which the line size was largely reduced, and this technique can be used to fabricate intricate capillary networks.

Abstract
The application of three-dimensional printing technology in the medical field has great potential for bone defect repair, especially personalized and biological repair. As a green manufacturing process that does not involve liquefication through heating, low-temperature deposition manufacturing (LDM) is a promising type of rapid prototyping manufacturing and has been widely used to fabricate scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. The scaffolds fabricated by LDM have a multi-scale controllable pore structure and interconnected micropores, which are beneficial for the repair of bone defects. At the same time, different types of cells or bioactive factor can be integrated into three-dimensional structural scaffolds through LDM. Herein, we introduced LDM technology and summarize its applications in bone tissue engineering. We divide the scaffolds into four categories according to the skeleton materials and discuss the performance and limitations of the scaffolds. The ideas presented in this review have prospects in the development and application of LDM scaffolds.

Abstract
Agriculturally derived biowastes can be transformed into a diverse range of materials, including powders, fibers, and filaments, which can be used in additive manufacturing methods. This review study reports a study that analyzes the existing literature on the development of novel materials from agriculturally derived biowastes for additive manufacturing methods. A review was conducted of 57 selected publications since 2016 covering various agriculturally derived biowastes, different additive manufacturing methods, and potential large-scale applications of additive manufacturing using these materials. Wood, fish, and algal cultivation wastes were also included in the broader category of agriculturally derived biowastes. Further research and development are required to optimize the use of agriculturally derived biowastes for additive manufacturing, particularly with regard to material innovation, improving print quality and mechanical properties, as well as exploring large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract
As computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies have matured, three-dimensional (3D) printing materials suitable for dentistry have attracted considerable research interest, owing to their high efficiency and low cost for clinical treatment. Three-dimensional printing technology, also known as additive manufacturing, has developed rapidly over the last forty years, with gradual application in various fields from industry to dental sciences. Four-dimensional (4D) printing, defined as the fabrication of complex spontaneous structures that change over time in response to external stimuli in expected ways, includes the increasingly popular bioprinting. Existing 3D printing materials have varied characteristics and scopes of application; therefore, categorization is required. This review aims to classify, summarize, and discuss dental materials for 3D printing and 4D printing from a clinical perspective. Based on these, this review describes four major materials, i.e., polymers, metals, ceramics, and biomaterials. The manufacturing process of 3D printing and 4D printing materials, their characteristics, applicable printing technologies, and clinical application scope are described in detail. Furthermore, the development of composite materials for 3D printing is the main focus of future research, as combining multiple materials can improve the materials' properties. Updates in material sciences play important roles in dentistry; hence, the emergence of newer materials are expected to promote further innovations in dentistry.

Abstract
Manufacturing of three-dimensional scaffolds with multiple levels of porosity are an advantage in tissue regeneration approaches to influence cell behavior. Three-dimensional scaffolds with surface roughness and intra-filament open porosity were successfully fabricated by additive manufacturing combined with chemical foaming and porogen leaching without the need of toxic solvents. The decomposition of sodium citrate, a chemical blowing agent, generated pores within the scaffold filaments, which were interconnected and opened to the external environment by leaching of a water-soluble sacrificial phase, as confirmed by micro-CT and buoyancy measurements. The additional porosity did not result in lower elastic modulus, but in higher strain at maximum load, i.e. scaffold ductility. Human mesenchymal stromal cells cultured for 24 h adhered in greater numbers on these scaffolds when compared to plain additive-manufactured ones, irrespectively of the scaffold pre-treatment method. Additionally, they showed a more spread and random morphology, which is known to influence cell fate. Cells cultured for a longer period exhibited enhanced metabolic activity while secreting higher osteogenic markers after 7 days in culture. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Inspired by the function of hierarchical cellular structures in natural materials, this work elucidates the development of scaffolds with multiscale porosity by combining in-situ foaming and additive manufacturing, and successive porogen leaching. The resulting scaffolds displayed enhanced mechanical toughness and multiscale pore network interconnectivity, combined with early differentiation of adult mesenchymal stromal cells into the osteogenic lineage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Traditional methods of prosthesis fabrication are not efficient and user centric and are made for common purposes without focusing on individual demands of user which leads to rejection of prosthesis for long-term use. Utilizing advanced additive manufacturing techniques for fabrication of prosthesis makes the development process user centric and covers all the user demands thus providing better fit, comfort, and more stable gait rehabilitation for the user. AREAS COVERED The articles reporting fabrication of lower limb prosthesis and its socket are included in the study. Standard fabrication and additive manufacturing method are both systematically assessed by the reviewers. The review also covers the advanced methods of additive manufacturing that are presently being used for fabrication of rehabilitation devices. EXPERT OPINION Additive manufacturing method of fabrication of prosthesis provides more flexibility for manufacturing prosthesis parts as per demand of the user. The fabrication method takes into account the residual limb and thus makes the prosthesis user-specific providing better comfort and fit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In vivo-mimicking conditions are critical in in vitro cell analysis to obtain clinically relevant results. The required conditions, comparable to those prevalent in nature, can be provided by microfluidic dynamic cell cultures. Microfluidics can be used to fabricate and test the functionality and biocompatibility of newly developed nanosystems or to apply micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems embedded in a microfluidic system. However, the use of microfluidic systems is often hampered by their accessibility, acquisition cost, or customization, especially for scientists whose primary research focus is not microfluidics. RESULTS Here we present a method for 3D printing that can be applied without special prior knowledge and sophisticated equipment to produce various ready-to-use microfluidic components with a size of 100 µm. Compared to other available methods, 3D printing using fused deposition modeling (FDM) offers several advantages, such as time-reduction and avoidance of sophisticated equipment (e.g., photolithography), as well as excellent biocompatibility and avoidance of toxic, leaching chemicals or post-processing (e.g., stereolithography). We further demonstrate the ease of use of the method for two relevant applications: a cytotoxicity screening system and an osteoblastic differentiation assay. To our knowledge, this is the first time an application including treatment, long-term cell culture and analysis on one chip has been demonstrated in a directly 3D-printed microfluidic chip. CONCLUSION The direct 3D printing method is tested and validated for various microfluidic components that can be combined on a chip depending on the specific requirements of the experiment. The ease of use and production opens up the potential of microfluidics to a wide range of users, especially in biomedical research. Our demonstration of its use as a cytotoxicity screening system and as an assay for osteoblastic differentiation shows the methods potential in the development of novel biomedical applications. With the presented method, we aim to disseminate microfluidics as a standard method in biomedical research, thus improving the reproducibility and transferability of results to clinical applications.

Abstract
Although the architectural design parameters of 3D-printed polymer-based scaffolds-porosity, height-to-diameter (H/D) ratio and pore size-are significant determinants of their mechanical integrity, their impact has not been explicitly discussed when reporting bulk mechanical properties. Controlled architectures were designed by systematically varying porosity (30-75%, H/D ratio (0.5-2.0) and pore size (0.25-1.0 mm) and fabricated using fused filament fabrication technique. The influence of the three parameters on compressive mechanical properties-apparent elastic modulus Eapp, bulk yield stress σy and yield strain εy-were investigated through a multiple linear regression analysis. H/D ratio and porosity exhibited strong influence on the mechanical behavior, resulting in variations in mean Eapp of 60% and 95%, respectively. σy was comparatively less sensitive to H/D ratio over the range investigated in this study, with 15% variation in mean values. In contrast, porosity resulted in almost 100% variation in mean σy values. Pore size was not a significant factor for mechanical behavior, although it is a critical factor in the biological behavior of the scaffolds. Quantifying the influence of porosity, H/D ratio and pore size on bench-top tested bulk mechanical properties can help optimize the development of bone scaffolds from a biomechanical perspective.

Abstract
Freeform reversible embedding of suspended hydrogels (FRESH) is a layer-by-layer extrusion-based technique to enable three-dimensional (3D) printing of soft tissue constructs by using a thermo-reversible gelatin support bath. Suboptimal resolution of extrusion-based printing limits its use for the creation of microscopic features in the 3D construct. These microscopic features (e.g., pore size) are known to have a profound effect on cell migration, cell-cell interaction, proliferation, and differentiation. In a recent study, FRESH-based 3D printing was combined with freeze-casting in the Freeze-FRESH (FF) method, which yielded alginate constructs with hierarchical porosity. However, use of the FF approach allowed little control of micropore size in the printed alginate constructs. Herein, the FF methodology was optimized for 3D printing of collagen constructs with greater control of microporosity. Modifications to the FF method entailed melting of the FRESH bath before freezing to allow more efficient heat transport, achieve greater control on microporosity, and permit polymerization of collagen molecules to enable 3D printing of stable microporous collagen constructs. The effects of different freezing temperatures on microporosity and physical properties of the 3D-printed collagen constructs were assessed. In addition, finite element (FE) models were generated to predict the mechanical properties of the microporous constructs. Further, the impact of different micropore sizes on cellular response was evaluated. Results showed that the microporosity of 3D-printed collagen constructs can be tailored by customizing the FF approach. Compressive modulus of microporous constructs was significantly lower than the non-porous control, and the FE model verified these findings. Constructs with larger micropore size were more stable and showed significantly greater cell infiltration and metabolic activity. Together, these results suggest that the FF method can be customized to guide the design of 3D-printed microporous collagen constructs.

Abstract
In most cases, bone injuries heal without complications, however, there is an increasing number of instances where bone healing needs major clinical intervention. Available treatment options have severe drawbacks, such as donor site morbidity and limited availability for autografting. Bone graft substitutes containing growth factors would be a viable alternative, however they have been associated with dose-related safety concerns and lack control over spatial architecture to anatomically match bone defect sites. 3D printing offers a solution to produce patient specific bone graft substitutes that are customized to the patient bone defect with temporal control over the incorporated therapeutics to maximize their efficacy. Inspired by the natural constitution of bone tissue, composites made of inorganic phases, such as nanosilicate particles, calcium phosphate, and bioactive glasses, combined with biopolymer matrices have been investigated as building blocks for the biofabrication of bone constructs. Besides capturing elements of the bone physiological structure, these inorganic/organic composites can be designed for specific cohesivity, rheological and mechanical properties, while both inorganic and organic constituents contribute to the composite bioactivity. This review provides an overview of 3D printed composite biomaterial-inks for bone tissue engineering. Furthermore, key aspects in biomaterial-ink design, 3D printing techniques, and the building blocks for composite biomaterial-inks are summarized.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM, also known as 3D printing) is an advanced manufacturing technique that has enabled progress in the design and fabrication of customised or patient-specific (meta-)biomaterials and biomedical devices (e.g., implants, prosthetics, and orthotics) with complex internal microstructures and tuneable properties. In the past few decades, several design guidelines have been proposed for creating porous lattice structures, particularly for biomedical applications. Meanwhile, the capabilities of AM to fabricate a wide range of biomaterials, including metals and their alloys, polymers, and ceramics, have been exploited, offering unprecedented benefits to medical professionals and patients alike. In this review article, we provide an overview of the design principles that have been developed and used for the AM of biomaterials as well as those dealing with three major categories of biomaterials, i.e., metals (and their alloys), polymers, and ceramics. The design strategies can be categorised as: library-based design, topology optimisation, bio-inspired design, and meta-biomaterials. Recent developments related to the biomedical applications and fabrication methods of AM aimed at enhancing the quality of final 3D-printed biomaterials and improving their physical, mechanical, and biological characteristics are also highlighted. Finally, examples of 3D-printed biomaterials with tuned properties and functionalities are presented.

Abstract
Polylactic acid–glycolic acid (PLGA) has been widely used in bone tissue engineering due to its favorable biocompatibility and adjustable biodegradation. 3D printing technology can prepare scaffolds with rich structure and function, and is one of the best methods to obtain scaffolds for bone tissue repair. This review systematically summarizes the research progress of 3D-printed, PLGA-based scaffolds. The properties of the modified components of scaffolds are introduced in detail. The influence of structure and printing method change in printing process is analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of their applications are illustrated by several examples. Finally, we briefly discuss the limitations and future development direction of current 3D-printed, PLGA-based materials for bone tissue repair.

Abstract
Bone tissue engineering strategies aimed at treating critical-sized craniofacial defects often utilize novel biomaterials and scaffolding. Rapid manufacturing of defect-matching geometries using 3D-printing strategies is a promising strategy to treat craniofacial bone loss to improve aesthetic and regenerative outcomes. To validate manufacturing quality, a robust, three-dimensional quality assurance pipeline is needed to provide an objective, quantitative metric of print quality if porous scaffolds are to be translated from laboratory to clinical settings. Previously published methods of assessing scaffold print quality utilized one- and two-dimensional measurements (e.g., strut widths, pore widths, and pore area) or, in some cases, the print quality of a single phantom is assumed to be representative of the quality of all subsequent prints. More robust volume correlation between anatomic shapes has been accomplished; however, it requires manual user correction in challenging cases such as porous objects like bone scaffolds. Here, we designed porous, anatomically-shaped scaffolds with homogenous or heterogenous porous structures. We 3D-printed the designs with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to obtain 3D image reconstructions. We applied the iterative closest point algorithm to superimpose the computational scaffold designs with the CBCT images to obtain a 3D volumetric overlap. In order to avoid false convergences while using an autonomous workflow for volumetric correlation, we developed an independent iterative closest point (I-ICP10) algorithm using MATLAB®, which applied ten initial conditions for the spatial orientation of the CBCT images relative to the original design. Following successful correlation, scaffold quality can be quantified and visualized on a sub-voxel scale for any part of the volume.

Abstract
A proper pH microenvironment is crucial to mobilizing regeneration function of biomaterials. Neutralizing the acidity in bone defects with alkaline substances is a promising strategy to create favorable environments for cell proliferation and bone repair. In this study, to neutralize the acidity and reduce the inflammation caused by the rapid release of citric acid, a novel citrate-based biodegradable elastomeric poly(citric acid-1,8-octanediol-1,4-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine (BHEp)) (POPC) is synthesized with the introduction of the alkaline fragment BHEp, and then POPC/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) porous scaffolds are fabricated by 3D printing technique. The results reveal that the alkaline fragment BHEp effectively corrects the acid environment and improves the biocompatibility, cells affinity and promoted cell adhesion, and proliferation of POPC. Furthermore, the improved pH of POPC15/β-TCP (PTCP15) enhances the adhesion and the proliferation of rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes. Moreover, PTCP15 scaffolds relieve inflammatory response and switch RAW 264.7 toward a prohealing extreme. The rat femoral defect model further demonstrates good biocompatibility and enhanced bone regeneration of PTCP15. In conclusion, the results offer a promising approach for biodegradable polymers to address the degradation acidity issue. Meanwhile, a positive regulation strategy is provided for biopolymer to enhance cell proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and bone repair.

Abstract
α-Amino acid based polyester amides (PEAs) are promising candidates for additive manufacturing (AM), as they unite the flexibility and degradability of polyesters and good thermomechanical properties of polyamides in one structure. Introducing α-amino acids in the PEA structure brings additional advantages such as (i) good cytocompatibility and biodegradability, (ii) providing strong amide bonds, enhancing the hydrogen-bonding network, (iii) the introduction of pendant reactive functional groups, and (iv) providing good cell-polymer interactions. However, the application of α-amino acid based PEAs for AM via fused deposition modeling (FDM), an important manufacturing technique with unique processing characteristics and requirements, is still lacking. With the aim to exploit the combination of these advantages in the creation, design, and function of additively manufactured scaffolds using FDM, we report the structure-function relationship of a series of α-amino acid based PEAs. The PEAs with three different molecular weights were synthesized via the active solution polycondensation, and their performance for AM applications was studied in comparison with a commercial biomedical grade copolymer of l-lactide and glycolide (PLGA). The PEAs, in addition to good thermal stability, showed semicrystalline behavior with proper mechanical properties, which were different depending on their molecular weight and crystallinity. They showed more ductility due to their lower glass transition temperature (Tg; 18-20 °C) compared with PLGA (57 °C). The rheology studies revealed that the end-capping of PEAs is of high importance for preventing cross-linking and further polymerization during the melt extrusion and for the steadiness and reproducibility of FDM. Furthermore, our data regarding the steady 3D printing performance, good polymer-cell interactions, and low cytotoxicity suggest that α-amino acid based PEAs can be introduced as favorable polymers for future AM applications in tissue engineering. In addition, their ability for formation of bonelike apatite in the simulated body fluid (SBF) indicates their potential for bone tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Although there have been remarkable advances in cartilage tissue engineering, construction of irregularly shaped cartilage, including auricular, nasal, tracheal, and meniscus cartilages, remains challenging because of the difficulty in reproducing its precise structure and specific function. Among the advanced fabrication methods, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology offers great potential for achieving shape imitation and bionic performance in cartilage tissue engineering. This review discusses requirements for 3D printing of various irregularly shaped cartilage tissues, as well as selection of appropriate printing materials and seed cells. Current advances in 3D printing of irregularly shaped cartilage are also highlighted. Finally, developments in various types of cartilage tissue are described. This review is intended to provide guidance for future research in tissue engineering of irregularly shaped cartilage.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle is a functional tissue that accounts for approximately 40% of the human body mass. It has remarkable regenerative potential, however, trauma and volumetric muscle loss, progressive disease and aging can lead to significant muscle loss that the body cannot recover from. Clinical approaches to address this range from free-flap transfer for traumatic events involving volumetric muscle loss, to myoblast transplantation and gene therapy to replace muscle loss due to sarcopenia and hereditary neuromuscular disorders, however, these interventions are often inadequate. The adoption of engineering paradigms, in particular materials engineering and materials/tissue interfacing in biology and medicine, has given rise to the rapidly growing, multidisciplinary field of bioengineering. These methods have facilitated the development of new biomaterials that sustain cell growth and differentiation based on bionic biomimicry in naturally occurring and synthetic hydrogels and polymers, as well as additive fabrication methods to generate scaffolds that go some way to replicate the structural features of skeletal muscle. Recent advances in biofabrication techniques have resulted in significant improvements to some of these techniques and have also offered promising alternatives for the engineering of living muscle constructs ex vivo to address the loss of significant areas of muscle. This review highlights current research in this area and discusses the next steps required towards making muscle biofabrication a clinical reality.

Abstract
With the increased incidence of bone defects following trauma or diseases in recent years, three-dimensional porous scaffolds fabricated using bioprinting technologies have been widely explored as effective alternatives to conventional bone grafts, which provide cell-friendly microenvironments promoting bone repair and regeneration. However, the limited use of biomaterials poses a significant challenge to the robust and accurate fabrication of bioprinted bone scaffolds that enable effective regeneration of the target tissues. Although bioceramic/polymer composites can provide tunable biomimetic conditions, their effects on the bioprinting process are unclear. Thus, in this study, we fabricated hydroxyapatite (HA)/gelatin composite scaffolds containing large weight fractions of HA using extrusion-based bioprinting, with the aim to provide an adequate biomimetic environment for bone tissue regeneration with compositional and mechanical similarity to the natural bone matrix. The overall features of the bioprinted HA/gelatin composite scaffolds, including rheological, morphological, physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties, were quantitatively assessed to determine the optimal conditions for both fabrication and therapeutic efficiency. The present results show that the bioprinted bioceramic/hydrogel scaffolds possess excellent shape fidelity; mechanical strength comparable to that of native bone; and enhanced bioactivity in terms of cell proliferation, attachment, and osteogenic differentiation. This study provides a suitable alternative direction for the fabrication of bioceramic/hydrogel-based scaffolds for bone repair based on bioprinting.

Abstract
Recent developments in three-dimensional (3D) printing technology offer immense potential in fabricating scaffolds and implants for various biomedical applications, especially for bone repair and regeneration. As the availability of autologous bone sources and commercial products is limited and surgical methods do not help in complete regeneration, it is necessary to develop alternative approaches for repairing large segmental bone defects. The 3D printing technology can effectively integrate different types of living cells within a 3D construct made up of conventional micro- or nanoscale biomaterials to create an artificial bone graft capable of regenerating the damaged tissues. This article reviews the developments and applications of 3D printing in bone tissue engineering and highlights the numerous conventional biomaterials and nanomaterials that have been used in the production of 3D-printed scaffolds. A comprehensive overview of the 3D printing methods such as stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition modeling (FDM), and ink-jet 3D printing, and their technical and clinical applications in bone repair and regeneration has been provided. The review is expected to be useful for readers to gain an insight into the state-of-the-art of 3D printing of bone substitutes and their translational perspectives.

Abstract
Bone regeneration is an interdisciplinary complex lesson, including but not limited to materials science, biomechanics, immunology, and biology. Having witnessed impressive progress in the past decades in the development of bone substitutes; however, it must be said that the most suitable biomaterial for bone regeneration remains an area of intense debate. Since its discovery, poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been widely used in bone tissue engineering due to its good biocompatibility and adjustable biodegradability. This review systematically covers the past and the most recent advances in developing PLGA-based bone regeneration materials. Taking the different application forms of PLGA-based materials as the starting point, we describe each form's specific application and its corresponding advantages and disadvantages with many examples. We focus on the progress of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds, three-dimensional (3D) printed scaffolds, microspheres/nanoparticles, hydrogels, multiphasic scaffolds, and stents prepared by other traditional and emerging methods. Finally, we briefly discuss the current limitations and future directions of PLGA-based bone repair materials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: As a key synthetic biopolymer in bone tissue engineering application, the progress of PLGA-based bone substitute is impressive. In this review, we summarized the past and the most recent advances in the development of PLGA-based bone regeneration materials. According to the typical application forms and corresponding crafts of PLGA-based substitutes, we described the development of electrospinning nanofibrous scaffolds, 3D printed scaffolds, microspheres/nanoparticles, hydrogels, multiphasic scaffolds and scaffolds fabricated by other manufacturing process. Finally, we briefly discussed the current limitations and proposed the newly strategy for the design and fabrication of PLGA-based bone materials or devices.

Abstract
Layer-by-layer deposition of cells, tissues and similar molecules provided by additive manufacturing techniques such as 3D bioprinting offers safe, biocompatible, effective and inert methods for the production of biological structures and biomimetic scaffolds. 3D bioprinting assisted through computer programmes and software develops mutli-modal nano- or micro-particulate systems such as biosensors, dosage forms or delivery systems and other biological scaffolds like pharmaceutical implants, prosthetics, etc. This review article focuses on the implementation of 3D bioprinting techniques in the gene expression, in gene editing or therapy and in delivery of genes. The applications of 3D printing are extensive and include gene therapy, modulation and expression in cancers, tissue engineering, osteogenesis, skin and vascular regeneration. Inclusion of nanotechnology with genomic bioprinting parameters such as gene conjugated or gene encapsulated 3D printed nanostructures may offer new avenues in the future for efficient and controlled treatment and help in overcoming the limitations faced in conventional methods. Moreover, expansion of the benefits from such techniques is advantageous in real-time delivery or in-situ production of nucleic acids into the host cells.

Abstract
Bone scaffolds are often fabricated by initially producing custom-made filaments by twin-screw extruder and subsequently fabricating into 3D scaffolds using fused deposition modelling. This study aims to directly compare the effect of two alternative silica-rich filler materials on the thermo-mechanical properties of such scaffolds after extrusion and printing. Poly (DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PDLGA) was blended with either 45S5 Bioglass (5 wt %) or Biosilica (1 and 5 wt%) isolated from Cyclotella meneghiniana a freshwater diatom were tested. Diatom-PDLGA was found to have similar mechanical strength and ductility to pure-PDLGA, whereas Bioglass-PDLGA was found induce a more brittle behaviour. Bioglass-PDLGA was also found to have the lowest toughness in terms of energy absorption to failure. The TGA results suggested that significant thermal degradation in both the Bioglass filaments and scaffolds had occurred as a result of processing. However, diatom biosilica was found to inhibit thermal degradation of the PDLGA. Furthermore, evidence suggested the agglomeration of Bioglass particles occurred during processing the Bioglass-PDLGA filaments. Overall, diatom biosilica was found to be a promising candidate as a bone filler additive in 3D printed PDLGA scaffolds, whereas Bioglass caused some potentially detrimental effects on performance.

Abstract
Biomaterials are in high demand due to the increasing geriatric population and a high prevalence of cardiovascular and orthopedic disorders. The combination of additive manufacturing (AM) and biomaterials is promising, especially towards patient-specific applications. With AM, unique and complex structures can be manufactured. Furthermore, the direct link to computer-aided design and digital scans allows for a direct replicable product. However, the appropriate selection of biomaterials and corresponding AM methods can be challenging but is a key factor for success. This article provides a concise material selection guide for the AM biomedical field. After providing a general description of biomaterial classes—biotolerant, bioinert, bioactive, and biodegradable—we give an overview of common ceramic, polymeric, and metallic biomaterials that can be produced by AM and review their biomedical and mechanical properties. As the field of load-bearing metallic implants experiences rapid growth, we dedicate a large portion of this review to this field and portray interesting future research directions. This article provides a general overview of the field, but it also provides possibilities for deepening the knowledge in specific aspects as it comprises comprehensive tables including materials, applications, AM techniques, and references.

Abstract
The reconstruction or repair of oral and maxillofacial functionalities and aesthetics is a priority for patients affected by tooth loss, congenital defects, trauma deformities, or various dental diseases. Therefore, in dental medicine, tissue reconstruction represents a major interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, endodontics, and even daily clinical practice. The current clinical approaches involve a vast array of techniques ranging from the traditional use of tissue grafts to the most innovative regenerative procedures, such as tissue engineering. In recent decades, a wide range of both artificial and natural biomaterials and scaffolds, genes, stem cells isolated from the mouth area (dental follicle, deciduous teeth, periodontal ligament, dental pulp, salivary glands, and adipose tissue), and various growth factors have been tested in tissue engineering approaches in dentistry, with many being proven successful. However, to fully eliminate the problems of traditional bone and tissue reconstruction in dentistry, continuous research is needed. Based on a recent literature review, this paper creates a picture of current innovative strategies applying dental stem cells for tissue regeneration in different dental fields and maxillofacial surgery, and offers detailed information regarding the available scientific data and practical applications.

Abstract
Successful osteochondral defect repair requires regenerating the subchondral bone whilst simultaneously promoting the development of an overlying layer of articular cartilage that is resistant to vascularization and endochondral ossification. During skeletal development articular cartilage also functions as a surface growth plate, which postnatally is replaced by a more spatially complex bone-cartilage interface. Motivated by this developmental process, the hypothesis of this study is that bi-phasic, fibre-reinforced cartilaginous templates can regenerate both the articular cartilage and subchondral bone within osteochondral defects created in caprine joints. To engineer mechanically competent implants, we first compared a range of 3D printed fibre networks (PCL, PLA and PLGA) for their capacity to mechanically reinforce alginate hydrogels whilst simultaneously supporting mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) chondrogenesis in vitro. These mechanically reinforced, MSC-laden alginate hydrogels were then used to engineer the endochondral bone forming phase of bi-phasic osteochondral constructs, with the overlying chondral phase consisting of cartilage tissue engineered using a co-culture of infrapatellar fat pad derived stem/stromal cells (FPSCs) and chondrocytes. Following chondrogenic priming and subcutaneous implantation in nude mice, these bi-phasic cartilaginous constructs were found to support the development of vascularised endochondral bone overlaid by phenotypically stable cartilage. These fibre-reinforced, bi-phasic cartilaginous templates were then evaluated in clinically relevant, large animal (caprine) model of osteochondral defect repair. Although the quality of repair was variable from animal-to-animal, in general more hyaline-like cartilage repair was observed after 6 months in animals treated with bi-phasic constructs compared to animals treated with commercial control scaffolds. This variability in the quality of repair points to the need for further improvements in the design of 3D bioprinted implants for joint regeneration. To this end we used 3D printed fibre networks to mechanically reinforce engineered transient cartilage, which also contained an overlying layer of phenotypically stable cartilage engineered using a co-culture of chondrocytes and stem cells. When chondrogenically primed and implanted into caprine osteochondral defects, these fibre-reinforced bi-phasic cartilaginous grafts were shown to spatially direct tissue development during joint repair. Such developmentally inspired tissue engineering strategies, enabled by advances in biofabrication and 3D printing, could form the basis of new classes of regenerative implants in orthopaedic medicine.

Abstract
The development of alloplastic resorbable materials can revolutionize the field of implantation technology in regenerative medicine. Additional opportunities to colonize the three-dimensionally (3D) printed constructs with the patient’s own cells prior to implantation can improve the regeneration process but requires optimization of cultivation protocols. Human platelet lysate (hPL) has already proven to be a suitable replacement for fetal calf serum (FCS) in 2D and 3D cell cultures. In this study, we investigated the in vitro biocompatibility of the printed RESOMER® Filament LG D1.75 materials as well as the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) cultivated on 3D printed constructs under the influence of different medium supplements (FCS, human serum (HS) and hPL). Additionally, the in vitro degradation of the material was studied over six months. We demonstrated that LG D1.75 is biocompatible and has no in vitro cytotoxic effects on hMSCs. Furthermore, hMSCs grown on the constructs could be differentiated into osteoblasts, especially supported by supplementation with hPL. Over six months under physiological in vitro conditions, a distinct degradation was observed, which, however, had no influence on the biocompatibility of the material. Thus, the overall suitability of the material LG D1.75 to produce 3D printed, resorbable bone implants and the promising use of hPL in the xeno-free cultivation of human MSCs on such implants for autologous transplantation have been demonstrated.

Abstract
The development of printable hydrogel inks for extrusion-based 3D printing is opening new possibilities to the production of new and/or improved pharmaceutical forms, specifically for topical application. Alginate and starch are natural polysaccharides that have been extensively exploited due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, viscosity properties, low toxicity, and relatively low cost. This research work aimed to study the physicochemical and release kinetic effects of starch incorporation in alginate-based 3D hydrogel patches for topical delivery using a quality by design approach. The incorporation of a pregelatinized starch is also proposed as a way to improve the properties of the drug delivery system while maintaining the desired quality characteristics. Critical material attributes and process parameters were identified, and the sensitivity and adequacy of each parameter were statistically analyzed. The impact of alginate, starch, and CaCl2·2H2O amounts on relevant quality attributes was estimated crosswise. The amount of starch revealed a synergetic impact on porosity (p = 0.0021). An evident increase in the size and quantity of open pores were detected in the as printed patches as well as after crosslinking (15.6 ± 5.2 µm). In vitro drug release studies from the optimized alginate-starch 3D hydrogel patch, using the probe Rhodamine B, showed an initial high burst release, followed by a controlled release mechanism. The results obtained also showed that the viscoelastic properties, printing accuracy, gelation time, microstructure, and release rates can be modulated by varying the amount of starch added to the system. Furthermore, these results can be considered an excellent baseline for future drug release modulation strategies.

Abstract
Human meniscus is a fibrocartilaginous structure that is crucial for an adequate performance of the human knee joint. Degeneration of the meniscus is often followed by partial or total meniscectomy, which enhances the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis. The lack of a satisfactory treatment for this condition has triggered a major interest in drug delivery (DD) and tissue engineering (TE) strategies intended to restore a bioactive and fully functional meniscal tissue. The aim of this review is to critically discuss the most relevant studies on spatiotemporal DD and TE, aiming for a multizonal meniscal reconstruction. Indeed, the development of meniscal tissue implants should involve a provision for adequate active molecules and scaffold features that take into account the anisotropic ultrastructure of human meniscus. This zonal differentiation is reflected in the meniscus biochemical composition, collagen fiber arrangement, and cell distribution. In this sense, it is expected that a proper combination of advanced DD and zonal TE strategies will play a key role in the future trends in meniscus regeneration. Impact statement Meniscus degeneration is one of the main causes of knee pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility. Currently used suturing procedures and meniscectomy are far from being ideal solutions to the loss of meniscal function. Therefore, drug delivery (DD) and tissue engineering (TE) strategies are currently under investigation. DD systems aim at an in situ controlled release of growth factors, whereas TE strategies aim at mimicking the anisotropy of native meniscus. The goal of this review is to discuss these two main approaches, as well as synergies between them that are expected to lead to a real breakthrough in the field.

Abstract
Herein, a bilayer cylindrical conduit (P-CA) is presented consisting of electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers and sodium alginate hydrogel covalently cross-linked with N,N'-disuccinimidyl carbonate (DSC). The bilayer P-CA conduit is developed by combining the electrospinning and outer-inner layer methods. Using DSC, as a covalent crosslinker, increases the degradation time of the sodium alginate hydrogel up to 2 months. The swelling ratio of the hydrogel is also 503% during the first 8 h. The DSC cross-linked sodium alginate in the inner layer of the conduit promotes the adhesion and proliferation of nerve cells, while the electrospun PCL nanofibers in the outer layer provide maximum tensile strength of the conduit during surgery. P-CA conduit promotes the migration of Schwann cells along the axon in a rat model based on functional and histological evidences. In conclusion, P-CA conduit will be a promising construct for repairing sciatic nerves in a rat model.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing in tissue engineering has significantly advanced in acceptance and use to address complex problems. However, there are still limitations to the technologies used and potential challenges that need to be addressed by the community. In this manuscript, we describe how the field can be advanced not only through the development of new materials and techniques but also through the standardization of characterization, which in turn may impact the translation potential of the field as it matures. Furthermore, we discuss how education and outreach could be modified to ensure end-users have a better grasp on the benefits and limitations of 3D printing to aid in their career development.

Abstract
3D printing, as one of the most rapidly-evolving fabrication technologies, has released a cascade of innovation in the last two decades. In the pharmaceutical field, the integration of 3D printing technology has offered unique advantages, especially at the micro-scale. When printed at a micro-scale, materials and devices can provide nuanced solutions to controlled release, minimally invasive delivery, high-precision targeting, biomimetic models for drug discovery and development, and future opportunities for personalized medicine. This review aims to cover the recent advances in this area. First, the 3D printing techniques are introduced with respect to the technical parameters and features that are uniquely related to each stage of pharmaceutical development. Then specific micro-sized pharmaceutical applications of 3D printing are summarized and grouped according to the provided benefits. Both advantages and challenges are discussed for each application. We believe that these technologies provide compelling future solutions for modern medicine, while challenges remain for scale-up and regulatory approval.
