Abstract
BACKGROUND Baby-led weaning (BLW), a popular complementary feeding style, prioritizes exploration of foods, independence of children in eating, and eating with family. Though BLW has received popular attention, empirical evidence is limited. This study measured parents' reports of BLW, parenting style, and feeding practices; analyzed BLW's relation to children's dietary intake; examined how demographic variables such as age, parent sex, education, and marital status related to the prevalence of using BLW. METHODS This cross sectional study recruited 313 parents with children ages 6-30 months via Cloud Research, an online survey platform where individuals complete surveys for compensation. Hierarchical regressions examined how feeding style, dietary intake, and parenting style related to independence, exploration, and family subscales of BLW after controlling for relevant demographics. FINDINGS The majority (69.3%) of participants identified as female, white (76.6%), middle-class (52.4%), married (69%), and a third had a bachelor's degree (37.4%). Restrictive feeding practices, Ellyn Satter's division of responsibility, and the parents' sex were significant predictors of all subscales of BLW. DISCUSSION Parents who use BLW allowed for an autonomous food experience and were less likely to restrict or control the child's eating. BLW appears to be related to, but distinct from, well-researched parent feeding practices such as restriction and division of responsibility. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE These findings might be useful in education and interventions for healthcare professionals. Future research on BLW should examine how child behavior and nutrition outcomes compare to other feeding practices.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study aimed to translate and perform a psychometric analysis (evaluation of reproducibility and internal consistency) of the sDOR.2-6y™ into Brazilian Portuguese. The translation and back-translation followed the protocol required by the NEEDs Center, and the approved version was called "sDOR.2-6y™-Português-Brasil". The approved version was submitted to a test-retest round to verify its reproducibility through the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). A pilot study was performed to assess the internal consistency of the instrument. The reproducibility analysis (n = 23) showed a total ICC of 0.945. With the data from the pilot study (n = 384), the internal consistency evaluation was analyzed through Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and the instrument obtained an overall Cronbach's alpha of 0.301. The translation of the sDOR.2-6y™ into Brazilian Portuguese is the first and only tool available for the Brazilian population to exclusively assess the division of responsibility in feeding, which is essential to the academic community, health professionals, and research on child feeding. Therefore, this instrument in Brazilian Portuguese will allow future research on the division of responsibility in feeding among those responsible for children in Brazil.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study aimed to assess Brazilian child caregivers' eating competence (EC) and their adherence to the division of responsibility (sDOR) in child feeding. The research had national coverage in all Brazilian regions. The sample comprised 549 caregivers of Brazilian children (24 up to 72 months) recruited by social media (snowball method). Data on sDOR and EC were collected using the sDOR.2-6yTM Portuguese-Brazil (sDOR.2-6y-BR) and ecSI2.0TMBR, both instruments validated to the Brazilian population. The scores of the sDOR.2-6y-BR were described in terms of means, standard deviations (SD), medians, and interquartile range. Student's t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc tests were used to compare the scores of sDOR.2-6y-BR and ecSI2.0TMBR with interest variables. The association between the sDOR.2-6y-BR and ecSI2.0TMBR scores was verified by Pearson's correlation coefficient. Most of the participants were female (n = 88.7%), 37.8 ± 5.1 y/o, had a high schooling level (70.31%), and high monthly income (more than 15 minimum wages-MW) (31.69%). The children for whom the participants were responsible were mostly girls (53.19%), with an average age of 3.6 ± 1.3 y/o. The instrument presented good responsiveness (floor and ceiling effects = 0%). Cronbach's Alpha = 0.268. There was no statistical difference in sDOR.2-6y-BR scores between caregiver's gender, age, level of education, number of people living in the household, or by gender or age of the child. Caregivers who reported (n = 100) that their children had some medical diagnosis (e.g., food allergy, autism, or Down syndrome) had lower sDOR adherence scores than caregivers who indicated their children had no medical diagnosis (p = 0.031). There was no statistical difference in ecSI2.0TMBR scores between the categories of caregiver's gender, age, occupancy, and child's gender and age. Caregivers with income higher than 10 MW, living in houses with more than 3 people, and with graduate schooling showed higher EC scores. Caregivers considered competent eaters by ecSI2.0TMBR scores differed only for educational level, which was more frequent among graduate participants. The total EC score was positively associated with total and mealtime structure (D1), how food is available to the child (D3), and the parent gives respect to the child's autonomy in eating (D4) sDOR.2-6yTM domains. There was a negative association with the what is available to the child (D2) sDOR.2-6yTM domain. In general, the sDOR.2-6y-BR had a positive association with the ecSI2.0TMBR in all domains and total, with a low but significant correlation. This study enables the investigation of the division of responsibility in feeding and EC of a sample of caregivers of children in Brazil. This is the first study to apply the translated and validated version of the sDOR.2-6y-BR and showed good results, where competent eaters' caregivers adhere more to the principles of sDOR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The COVID-19 pandemic changed early care and education (ECE) mealtimes. Feeding practices that support children's emerging autonomy may support children's healthy eating, but it is unknown whether and how COVID-19 changed feeding practices. This paper describes caregiver feeding practices in ECE centres in Florida during COVID-19. DESIGN A mixed-methods design was used to understand mealtime feeding practices. Survey and interview questions were developed based on the Trust Model. More than 7000 surveys were sent to ECE centres. Analysis included descriptive statistics for survey data and thematic analysis for interview data. SETTING This statewide study included teachers in all licensed and license-exempt ECE centres. PARTICIPANTS Four hundred and thirty-one teachers completed a survey, and twenty-nine participated in follow-up interviews. RESULTS Surveys showed most teachers engaged in autonomy-supportive behaviours, such as letting children eat until they were finished (90 %). The most common controlling behaviour was praising children for cleaning their plates (70 %). The most common responses about changes to mealtimes were keeping physical distance and serving healthy food. Interview themes were Autonomy Support, Controlling Feeding Practices, Interactions are the Same, Interactions are Different, Physical Distancing and Healthy Eating. CONCLUSIONS Mealtimes are a central part of the day for young children and teachers in ECE environments. COVID-19 continues to influence ECE routines as behaviour change remains the primary method of reducing the risk of COVID-19 in the absence of a vaccine for young children. Understanding teachers' practices and perspectives is important for reducing the risk of COVID-19 and supporting children's autonomy and healthy eating.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most young children in the United States attend early care and education (ECE) programmes, where they consume the majority of daily calories. Best practices to support children's healthy eating include teachers sitting together with children, eating the same food, and appropriately supporting children in serving and feeding themselves. To understand how the COVID-19 pandemic changed mealtime practices in ECE, this study (1) describes what adaptations ECE directors and teachers made to mealtimes to include best practices, and (2) identifies common adaptations made to comply with COVID-19 infection control guidelines. METHODS This cross-sectional, mixed-methods study utilized survey and interview questions based on the trust model and social cognitive theory. More than 7000 surveys were distributed to ECE directors and teachers in Florida. Surveys were completed by 759 directors and 431 teachers. Also, 29 follow-up interviews with teachers were completed. Participants were asked to describe their mealtimes before and during COVID-19. Descriptive statistics and frequencies were used to analyse survey data, and thematic analysis was applied to interview data. RESULTS Less than 5% of survey respondents reported children serving themselves, a pre-COVID best practice. Interviews identified three common adaptations: (1) modification-best practices were incorporated into new routines, such as eating together but sitting farther away, (2) elimination-routines changed so that best practices were no longer possible, such as teachers wearing masks and standing during meals, and (3) minimal change-minimal changes due to COVID-19 occurred and consequently mealtime practices did not change. CONCLUSIONS Current recommendations do not allow children to self-serve, which previously was a key best practice. ECE centres that have successfully integrated COVID-19 modifications and maintained mealtime best practices-perhaps in a new form-can serve as examples for others. These findings are generalizable to ECE centres in Florida and could be compared with other states.

Abstract
Snacks contribute nearly one-quarter of children's daily energy intake in the USA. Snack time therefore represents an opportunity for parents to provide foods with key nutrients. Instead, the most common snack foods are major contributors to children's consumption of added sugars and sodium. Parents face major barriers to providing healthier snacks, including perceptions of high cost and lack of child acceptance. We obtained both economic and qualitative data to inform and optimize interventions for parents to promote vegetable snacks for children. We conducted a survey with parents (n = 368) to estimate how much of a discount would influence vegetable snack purchases by estimating willingness-to-pay using the contingent valuation method, using baby-cut carrots as a sample product. We conducted three focus groups (n = 19) and 1 group interview (n = 2) with children to help understand how to increase the appeal of vegetable snacks. Most (70%) parents accepted the reference price for the vegetable snack. Among those who did not, contingent valuation analysis revealed that a mean discount of approximately 30% would shift consumers to purchasing the snack. Focus group results revealed that the appeal of vegetable snacks to children was influenced by how they were prepared and presented, and the child's familiarity with the vegetables and ability to choose among them. This study lays the groundwork for effective interventions to promote the provision of vegetable snacks by parents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the validity and psychometrics of sDOR.2-6y, a 12-item measure of adherence to the Satter Division of Responsibility in Feeding (sDOR). DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. SETTING Online respondents in central Pennsylvania. PARTICIPANTS 117 parents (94% female, 77% White, 62% in ≥1 income-based assistance program) of preschoolers aged 2-6 years (28% moderate/high nutrition risk). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The sDOR.2-6y and Nutrition Screening Tool for Every Preschooler (NutriSTEP), a measure of child nutrition risk and other validated measures of eating behavior and parent feeding practices. ANALYSIS Relationships were evaluated with Pearson r, t tests, ANOVA, or chi-square. Factor structure was investigated using principal components analysis with varimax rotation. Binary logistic regression and general linear model controlling for low-income status compared with sDOR.2-6y and NutriSTEP scores. Linear regression predicted NutriSTEP and Satter Eating Competence Inventory 2.0 scores from sDOR.2-6y. RESULTS The sDOR.2-6y ranged from 16-32 (mean, 25.9 ± 3.3; n = 114). Parents of youth at nutrition risk had lower sDOR.2-6y scores (P = 0.004). Each 1 point sDOR.2-6y increase decreased nutrition risk odds by 21% (95% confidence interval, 0.675-0.918; P = 0.002). The sDOR.2-6y scores were higher with less restriction and pressure to eat (both P < 0.001) and were associated with feeding style. Specificity was 87% with sDOR.2-6y cutoff ≥24; sensitivity was 66% with cutoff ≥26. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The sDOR.2-6y accurately and reliably indicated adherence of low-income mothers to sDOR. Larger, diverse samples for future studies are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently developed parent feeding measures do not exclusively measure behaviors compatible with theoretical underpinnings of the Satter Division of Responsibility in Feeding for Children Aged 2 to 6 Years (sDOR.2-6y). A measure of adherence to sDOR.2-6y has been constructed and shown to have translational validity. OBJECTIVE To examine the construct validity of the 15 sDOR.2-6y items. DESIGN Observations from in-home mealtime video-capture in a household with a child aged 2 to 6 years were compared with parent sDOR.2-6y responses. One sDOR.2-6y item about mealtime regularity was compared with mealtime data provided in the Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool that had been completed by a larger sample of parents that included the smaller sample of video-capture participants. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING Parents of preschool children aged 2 to 6 years in central Pennsylvania participated in Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool online dietary assessment (n = 61) from May to November 2013 or in-home mealtime video-capture (n = 20) during October 2013 or both (n = 16). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Consensus of three trained sDOR coders of plausible parent sDOR.2-6y item responses after video viewing, parent responses to sDOR.2-6y items, and mealtime regularity from three Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool recalls. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Data analysis included identification of codeable 5-minute segments, coding by three sDOR experts, intraclass correlation coefficient, and determination of coder congruence to establish plausible sDOR.2-6y responses and comparison between coder-observed and parent sDOR.2-6y responses. RESULTS Video-capture participants were mostly women, White, and overweight with a mean ± standard deviation age of 35.3 ± 6.4 years. Postvideo debriefing supported the observed meal as typical in location, timing, and composition. Of 273 coding decisions, coder congruence was inadequate or dissonant for 3.7% and intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.81 (0.77 to 0.84; P < 0.001). Parent and congruent coder responses were in agreement for nearly 70% of the possible comparisons. Of the original 15 items, three were deemed not valid, nine of the remaining 12 were considered valid, and three could not be invalidated. CONCLUSIONS Congruence between observed and self-reported behaviors supported additional validation and scoring studies with the 12-item sDOR.2-6y to assess adherence of parents to sDOR.

Abstract
Interventions designed to improve children's self-regulation of energy intake have yielded mixed results. We tested the efficacy of a technology-enhanced intervention designed to teach children to eat in response to internal hunger and fullness cues. Thirty-two children (mean age 4.9 ± 0.8 y) completed this within-subjects, pre-post design study that took place across 10 laboratory sessions, each scheduled approximately 1 week apart. The intervention was conducted across weeks 4-7 in small groups focused on teaching children how food travels through the body and how to respond to hunger and fullness signals. Children's short-term energy compensation, a measure of intake regulation, was collected at baseline and follow-up using a preloading protocol. Twenty-five minutes prior to receiving a standardized test meal, children consumed a low-energy (3 kcal) or high-energy (150 kcal) preload beverage, presented in random order at baseline and follow-up. Knowledge of intervention concepts was also assessed at baseline and follow-up. Linear mixed models were used to examine changes in short-term energy compensation and knowledge from baseline to follow-up. Knowledge related to the intervention improved from baseline to follow-up (3.5 ± 0.3 to 7.0 ± 0.3 correct responses out of a possible 10; P < 0.001). Children's energy compensation also improved from baseline to follow-up, as evidenced by a time-by-preload condition interaction (P = 0.02). However, this improvement was driven by boys who increased the adjustment for beverage energy content from baseline to follow-up (P = 0.04). Girls showed no change in energy compensation with the intervention (P = 0.58). The overall increase in knowledge, paired with the improvement in energy compensation in boys, suggests that this technology-enhanced intervention may be efficacious for some children. Further research is needed to determine whether boys and girls will benefit from different, personalized intervention strategies for obesity prevention.
