Abstract
In Myanmar, where backyard, semi-intensive, and intensive pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) farming coexist, there is limited understanding of the zoonotic risks and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) associated with these farming practices. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence, AMR and genomic features of Salmonella in pig farms in the Yangon region and the impact of farm intensification to provide evidence to support risk-based future management approaches. Twenty-three farms with different production scales were sampled for two periods with three sampling-visit each. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests and whole-genome sequencing were performed on the isolates. The prevalence of Salmonella was 44.5% in samples collected from backyard farms, followed by intensive (39.5%) and semi-intensive farms (19.5%). The prevalence of multi-drug resistant isolates from intensive farms (45/84, 53.6%) was higher than those from backyard (32/171, 18.7%) and semi-intensive farms (25/161, 15.5%). Among 28 different serovars identified, S. Weltevreden (40; 14.5%), S. Kentucky (38; 13.8%), S. Stanley (35, 12.7%), S. Typhimurium (22; 8.0%) and S. Brancaster (20; 7.3%) were the most prevalent serovars and accounted for 56.3% of the genome sequenced strains. The diversity of Salmonella serovars was highest in semi-intensive and backyard farms (21 and 19 different serovars, respectively). The high prevalence of globally emerging S. Kentucky ST198 was detected on backyard farms. The invasive-infection linked typhoid-toxin gene (cdtB) was found in the backyard farm isolated S. Typhimurium, relatively enriched in virulence and AMR genes, presented an important target for future surveillance. While intensification, in terms of semi-intensive versus backyard production, maybe a mitigator for zoonotic risk through a lower prevalence of Salmonella, intensive production appears to enhance AMR-associated risks. Therefore, it remains crucial to closely monitor the AMR and virulence potential of this pathogen at all scales of production. The results underscored the complex relationship between intensification of animal production and the prevalence, diversity and AMR of Salmonella from pig farms in Myanmar.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica serovar Meleagridis (S. Meleagridis) is a non-typhoidal Salmonella serotype commonly found in food and humans. In this study, we investigated 61 Chinese S. Meleagridis isolates from various sources, predominantly from pigs and pig products. Additionally, the serotype was also identified in samples from human infections. Whole-genome sequencing analysis of these isolates, combined with 10 isolates from other countries, demonstrated that the Chinese isolates formed a distinct Cluster C, further divided into two subclusters (Cluster C-1 and Cluster C-2) based on cgMLST analysis. CRISPR typing divided the 61 isolates into three CRISPR types (MCT1, MCT2, MCT3), belonging to Cluster I (96.7%, 59/61) and Cluster II (3.3%, 2/61), which corresponded to Cluster C-2 and Cluster C-1, respectively. Among the 48 identified spacers, the spacer SoeB5 was the only target differentiating MCT1 and MCT2 isolates of Cluster I. MelB12 and MelB13, identified in US and Denmark isolates, were not found among the 61 Chinese isolates. Examination of antimicrobial resistance gene profiles and their genetic contexts uncovered the presence of IncR plasmids in 43 (70.5%, 43/61) isolates within Cluster C, conferring resistance to tetracycline and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Homology analysis of spacers showed that 12 spacers exhibited similarity to sequences in phages or plasmids. Additionally, five spacers showed homology to sequences in plasmids from other Salmonella serotypes, suggesting their potential role in helping S. Meleagridis resist against Salmonella isolates carrying similar plasmids. The comprehensive analysis of CRISPR, cgMLST, and antimicrobial resistance in S. Meleagridis highlights the pig reservoir as a crucial factor in the evolution and transmission of this serotype to humans.

Abstract
Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen that poses a substantial risk to food safety and public health. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, antibiotic susceptibility, and genomic features of Salmonella isolates recovered from 600 retail meat samples (300 pork, 150 chicken and 150 beef) from August 2018 to October 2019 in Shaanxi, China. Overall, 40 (6.67 %) of 600 samples were positive to Salmonella, with the highest prevalence in chicken (21.33 %, 32/150), followed in pork (2.67 %, 8/300), while no Salmonella was detected in beef. A total of 10 serotypes and 11 sequence types (STs) were detected in 40 Salmonella isolates, with the most common being ST198 S. Kentucky (n = 15), ST13 S. Agona (n = 6), and ST17 S. Indiana (n = 5). Resistance was most commonly found to tetracycline (82.50 %), followed by to ampicillin (77.50 %), nalidixic acid (70.00 %), kanamycin (57.50 %), ceftriaxone (55.00 %), cefotaxime (52.50 %), cefoperazone (52.50 %), chloramphenicol (50.00 %), levofloxacin (57.50 %), cefotaxime (52.50 %), kanamycin (52.50 %), chloramphenicol (50.00 %), ciprofloxacin (50.00 %), and levofloxacin (50.00 %). All ST198 S. Kentucky isolates showed multi-drug resistance (MDR; ≥3 antimicrobial categories) pattern. Genomic analysis showed 56 distinct antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and 6 target gene mutations of quinolone resistance determining regions (QRDRs) in 40 Salmonella isolates, among which, the most prevalent ARG types were related to aminoglycosides and β-lactams resistance, and the most frequent mutation in QRDRs was GyrA (S83F) (47.5 %). The number of ARGs in Salmonella isolates showed a significant positive correlation with the numbers of insert sequences (ISs) and plasmid replicons. Taken together, our findings indicated retail chickens were seriously contaminated, while pork and beef are rarely contaminated by Salmonella. Antibiotic resistance determinants and genetic relationships of the isolates provide crucial data for food safety and public health safeguarding.

Abstract
Salmonella is an important foodborne pathogen, which can cause serious public health problems. Rapid and accurate detection of Salmonella infection and drug resistance mutations in patients will provide timely guidance for clinical treatment and avoid disease progression and other related clinical problems. Here, we established a highly sensitive and quick method for Salmonella and drug resistance mutation detection based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and CRISPR-lbCas12a system and evaluated its practicability with clinical samples.Specific CRISPR RNAs (crRNAs) and primers are designed for Salmonella DNA and parC gene S80I mutation diagnosis. CrRNAs with and without phosphorylated modification and different crRNA preparation methods are used to assess the effect on the detection system. After optimization, we detected as low as one copy of Salmonella DNA and drug resistance mutation parC S80I with the Salmonella DNA standard. For 94 clinical samples, this method also showed high sensitivity (100%, 95% CI: 84.98-100%) and specificity (98.48%, 95% CI: 90.73-99.92%) with less time (3 h) than plate culture (16 h) and conventional antimicrobial susceptibility testing (over 16 h). Besides, one parC S80I mutant strain was detected, which is consistent with the result of DNA sequencing. Taken together, we established a highly sensitive and specific method for Salmonella infection and parC S80I drug resistance mutation detection with fewer reagents and ordinary instruments. This assay has wide application prospects for fast detection of pathogen (bacterium and virus) infection, drug resistance determination, and proper treatment guidance.

Abstract
AbstractSalmonella is a significant foodborne zoonotic pathogen that endangers both human and animal health. The goal of this research is to gain a preliminary understanding of Salmonella contamination and antimicrobial resistance in the chicken production chain in Hubei Province, China. 1149 animal and environmental samples were collected from chicken farms, slaughterhouses, and retail markets in six cities across Hubei Province in China from 2019 to 2020, yielding Salmonella isolation rates of 4.68% (28/598), 12.21% (47/385), and 9.64% (16/166), respectively. Seventeen distinct serotypes were detected among 53 non-clonal Salmonella strains, of which Meleagridis (26.42%, 14/53) was the dominant serotype. Almost half of the strains (49.06%, 26/53) were multi-drug resistant (MDR). Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) showed that 10 resistance genes (tetA, blaTEM, parC, qnrS1, floR, aac(6′)-Iy, aph(6)-Id, aph(3″)-Ib, aac(6′)-Iaa and sul2) and 7 categories of virulence genes were present in all three links in 22 non-clonal dominant serotype strains. It was shown that Salmonella in the chicken production chain in Hubei Province had a high resistance rate to Tetracycline (TET, 73.58%), Ofloxacin (OFL, 69.81%), Florfenicol (FFC, 60.38%) and Ampicillin (AMP, 39.62%) which was consistent with the widespread use of these drugs in the husbandry industry in China. Salmonella ST types determined by MLST and serotypes determined by WGS had a one-to-one correlation. Minimum spanning tree analysis revealed that there was cross contamination of Salmonella in farms and slaughterhouses, slaughterhouses and markets, animal samples and environmental samples. This work provides useful information for the prevention and control of contamination and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella in the chicken production chain, as well as demonstrating the dependable role of WGS in Salmonella molecular typing.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica serotype Indiana (S. Indiana) in Chinese poultry meat has aroused widespread concern because of its high prevalence and strong antimicrobial resistance. In consideration of the relationship in our previous study between S. Indiana and co-resistance to ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime (CIP-CTX), which were the first-line drug which were used in Salmonella infection in clinical, the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of 224 CIP-CTX co-resistant S. Indiana isolated from retail chicken samples in China were investigated, with the aim of characterizing the AMR profiles and related resistance mechanisms to ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime among these CIP-CTX co-resistant S. Indiana isolates, all of which showed multi-drug-resistant (MDR) phenotypes. GyrA (S83F and D87N/G) with ParC (T57S and S80R) were the dominant amino acid substitution types, with oqxA, oqxB, and aac (6′)-Ib-cr identified as common plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR)-encoding genes. Five blaCTX-M gene subtypes were identified with blaCTX-M-65 ranking at the top. Equally important, we obtained one isolate CFSA664 harboring the mcr-1 gene was ESBL producer with co-resistance to nine in ten classes of tested drugs inclduing colistin. A single circular chromosome and 3 circular plasmids were found in its genome. Among the 26 AMR genes identified, 24 were located on plasmid pCFSA664-1, including three ESBL genes, while plasmid pCFSA664-3 owning only the mcr-1 gene and sharing the same backbone structure with plasmids from Enterobacteriaceae. No insertion sequences were found near the mcr-1 gene but a relaxase-encoding gene in the flank, which could transfer into E. coli J53 at a relatively high frequency. S. Indiana in this study exhibited highly drug-resistant phenotypes, contributing to the acceleration of the dissemination and emergence of this pathogen among different sources. Surveillance and a One Health strategy are needed to limit the emergence of S. Indiana along the food chain.

Abstract
Salmonella is a major zoonotic pathogen, which usually contaminates food resulting in salmonellosis in humans. Exploring the characteristics and origins of Salmonella is essential in formulating prevention and control measures for Salmonella infection. We used slide agglutination, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and whole-genome sequencing to analyze and compare Salmonella’s phenotype, genotyping diversity, and genetic relatedness from livestock meat and diarrhea patients in Hanzhong, China, from 2018 to 2020. Totally 216 Salmonella enterica isolates were screened from frozen whole chicken carcasses (44.3%, 70/158), frozen raw ground pork (36.2%, 59/163), and diarrhea patients (4.4%, 87/1964). Salmonella Typhimurium was the dominant serotype. Notably, compared with other sources, isolates obtained from frozen whole chicken carcasses showed significant resistance to third-generation cephalosporin and fluoroquinolones (p < 0.05). All strains were assigned into 36 sequence types (STs) and two novel STs, and an excellent consistency was observed between ST and serotype. Genomic data revealed that extended-spectrum β-lactamase genes were responsible for third-generation cephalosporin resistance in 52 Salmonella strains, and the most predominant resistance determinant was blaCTX–M. Furthermore, of the 60 ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates, five single-base mutations in quinolone resistance-determining regions were identified in gyrA or parC, and the plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance gene aac(6’)Ib-cr was most often detected. The cgMLST clusters show that five clusters among four serotypes (including S. Typhimurium, S. London, S. Derby, and S. Agona) cover samples from diarrhea patients and livestock meat pathway isolate, indicating a possibility of cross-host transmission. In conclusion, the livestock meat isolates have a higher level of resistance than diarrhea patients’ isolates and could be an essential source of human Salmonella infection.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica can lead to intestinal diarrhea, and the emergence and spread of cephalosporin-resistant Salmonella have brought great challenges to clinical treatment. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence and transmission of blaCTX-M genes among S. Typhimurium from diarrhoeal outpatients in Guangdong, China, from 2010 to 2017. A total of 221 blaCTX-M-positive isolates were recovered from 1,263 S. Typhimurium isolates from the facal samples of diarrhoea patients in 45 general hospitals from 11 cities. The most popular CTX-M gene was blaCTX-M-55 (39.6%, 72/182) in the CTX-M-1 group, followed by blaCTX-M-14 (22.5%, 41/182) and blaCTX-M-65 (19.2%, 35/182) in the CTX-M-9 group. The isolates that carried blaCTX-M-9G had significantly higher resistance rates to multiple antibacterials compared with blaCTX-M-1G (p < 0.01). Meanwhile, PFGE analysis not only showed the clonal transmission of blaCTX-M-55/14/65-positve isolates of diarrhoeal outpatients’ origins from different hospitals in Guangdong province, but also the characteristic of blaCTX-M-55/14/65-positve isolates’ bacterial persistence. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis indicated that these S. Typhimurium isolates possessed ST34 and ST19. Furthermore, genomic Beast phylogenomic analysis provided the evidence of a close relationship of blaCTX-M-positive S. Typhimurium isolates between the outpatients and pork. Most blaCTX-M-55/14/65 genes were transmitted by non-typeable or IncI1/IncFII/IncHI2 plasmids with the size of ranging from ~80 to ~280 kb. Moreover, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis further revealed that blaCTX-M-55/14/65 coexisted with other 25 types of ARGs, of which 11 ARGs were highly prevalent with the detection rates >50%, and it first reported the emergence of blaTEM-141 in S. Typhimurium. This study underscores the importance of surveillance for blaCTX-M-positive microbes in diarrhea patients.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to analyze the prevalence of Salmonella in multiple food commodities in the People's Republic of China by performing a meta-analysis. Accordingly, we screened studies that examined the prevalence of Salmonella in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Methodological quality assessment and heterogeneity analyses were performed for included studies. The prevalence rate with the 95% confidence interval (CI) was selected as the effect size. Subgroup analyses for each food type were conducted and then stratified by regions, food chain processing points, and seasons. In total, 49 studies were included in the meta-analysis, among them, 8 (16.3%) studies were deemed "high risk," 13 (26.5%) studies were "unclear risk," and 28 (57.2%) studies were "low risk." The overall prevalence rate of Salmonella was 20.0% (95% CI: 15.9 to 24.4). The prevalence rate of Salmonella in raw meat products was 23.6% (95% CI: 19.8 to 27.6), which was higher than that in aquatic products, 13.7% (95% CI: 3.1 to 29.9), milk products, 0.9% (95% CI: 0.0 to 3.9), frozen convenience foods, 6.5% (95% CI: 4.4 to 8.9), ready-to-eat foods, 2.0% (95% CI: 1.1 to 3.2), vegetables and fruits, 0.9% (95% CI: 0.0 to 5.2), and shell eggs, 4.2% (95% CI: 3.0 to 5.7). Subgroup analyses revealed that prevalence rates of Salmonella in raw meat products from abattoirs, 26.3% (95% CI: 17.4 to 36.3) and retail stores, 30.0% (95% CI: 24.6 to 35.8) were higher than those determined from farms, 10.2% (95% CI: 7.0 to 13.9); P < 0.05); however, no significant difference was observed in the prevalence of Salmonella stratified by different geographical regions or seasons (P > 0.05). On the basis of these findings, high levels of Salmonella contamination could be detected in raw meat products in China, and the prevalence rate of Salmonella in raw meat products from abattoirs and retail stores was high. Abstract
Colistin is the last line of defense for the treatment of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacterial infections. However, colistin resistance is gradually increasing worldwide, with resistance commonly regulated by two-component system and mcr gene. Thus, this study aimed to investigate molecular epidemiology and colistin-resistant mechanism of mcr-positive and mcr-negative Escherichia coli isolates from animal in Sichuan Province, China. In this study, a total of 101 colistin-resistant E. coli strains were isolated from 300 fecal samples in six farms in Sichuan Province. PCR was used to detect mcr gene (mcr-1 to mcr-9). The prevalence of mcr-1 in colistin-resistant E. coli was 53.47% (54/101), and the prevalence of mcr-3 in colistin-resistant E. coli was 10.89% (11/101). The colistin-resistant E. coli and mcr-1–positive E. coli showed extensive antimicrobial resistance profiles. For follow-up experiments, we used 30 mcr-negative and 30 mcr-1–positive colistin-resistant E. coli isolates and E. coli K-12 MG1655 model strain. Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) of 30 strains carrying mcr-1 as detected by PCR identified revealed six strains (20%) of ST10 and three strains (10%) of each ST206, ST48, and ST155 and either two (for ST542 and 2539) or just one for all other types. The conjugation experiment and plasmid replicon type analysis suggest that mcr-1 was more likely to be horizontally transferred and primarily localized on IncX4-type and IncI2-type plasmid. The ST diversity of the mcr-1 indicated a scattered and non-clonal spreading in mcr-1–positive E. coli. Twenty-eight mcr-negative colistin-resistant E. coli isolates carried diverse amino acid alterations in PmrA, PmrB, PhoP, PhoQ, and MgrB, whereas no mutation was found in the remaining isolates. The finding showed the high prevalence of colistin resistance in livestock farm environments in Sichuan Province, China. Our study demonstrates that colistin resistance is related to chromosomal point mutations including the two-component systems PhoP/PhoQ, PmrA/PmrB, and their regulators MgrB. These point mutations may confer colistin resistance in mcr-negative E. coli. These findings help in gaining insight of chromosomal-encoded colistin resistance in E. coli.

Abstract
Food-producing animals act as reservoirs of non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) serovars with potential food safety and public health implications. The present cross-sectional study aimed at determining the prevalence of Salmonella serotypes in non-diarrhoeic pigs and characterizing the isolates using molecular tools. Salmonella isolates (n = 22) recovered from faecal samples of 194 randomly selected pigs were characterized for virulence and antimicrobial resistance and subtyped using XbaI-PFGE. The prevalence of Salmonella in apparently healthy non-diarrhoeic pigs was 11.3% (95%CI, 4.3-19.5%), with S. Weltevreden (81.8%) and S. Enteritidis (18.2%) being the serotypes detected. Salmonella isolates harboured virulence genes such as invA (100%), stn (100%), spvR/spvC (86.3%) and fimA (22.7%). Phenotypically, isolates showed sensitivity to chloramphenicol, levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin and resistance to tetracycline and ampicillin (100%), streptomycin (86.4%), amoxicillin-clavulanate (63.6%), cefotaxime (22.7%) and ceftriaxone (9.1%). Notably, 18.2% isolates were multidrug-resistant (≥ 3 antimicrobial class) with multiple antimicrobial resistance (MAR) index of 0.56-0.67 (18.2%), 0.44 (45.5%), 0.33 (31.8%) and 0.22 (4.5%). Genotypically, isolates carried various antibiotic resistance genes: ESBL (blaTEM and blaOXA), aminoglycoside (strA, strB and aadA1), sulphonamide (sul1, sul2 and dfrA1), tetracycline (tetA and tetB) and plasmid AmpC beta-lactamase (ACC, FOX, MOX, DHA, CIT and EBC). The present investigation emphasizes the epidemiological significance of PFGE typing in the detection of emerging strains of highly virulent and multidrug-resistant S. Weltevreden and S. Enteritidis in non-diarrhoeic pigs that pose serious public health implications in the pork supply chain environment. More extensive longitudinal study is warranted to provide epidemiological links between environmental reservoirs and animal and human infections in piggery settings.

Abstract
Background: Salmonella enterica represents a considerable public concern worldwide, with farm animals often recognised as an important reservoir. This study gives an overview of the prevalence and serotype diversity of Salmonella over a 5-year period in the meat production chain in Estonia. Data on human salmonellosis over the same period are provided. Methods: Salmonella surveillance data from 2016 to 2020 were analysed. Results: The prevalence of Salmonella at the farm level was 27.7%, 3.3% and 0.1% for fattening pigs, cattle and poultry, respectively. S. Derby was the most prevalent serotype at the farm level for fattening pigs and S. Dublin for cattle. The top three serotypes isolated at the slaughterhouse and meat cutting levels were S. Derby, monophasic S. Typhimurium and S. Typhimurium with proportions of 64.7%, 9.4% and 7.0%, respectively. These serotypes were the top five most common Salmonella serotypes responsible for human infections in Estonia. S. Enteritidis is the main cause (46.9%) of human salmonellosis cases in Estonia, but in recent years, Enteritidis has not been detected at the slaughterhouse or meat cutting level. Conclusion: In recent years, monophasic S. Typhimurium has become epidemiologically more important in Estonia, with the second-highest cause in human cases and third-highest among the most prevalent serotypes of Salmonella enterica in the meat chain.

Abstract
Tetracyclines and sulfonamides are broad-spectrum antibacterial agents which have been used to treat bacterial infections for over half a century. The widespread use of tetracyclines and sulfonamides led to the emergence of resistance in a diverse group of bacteria. This resistance can be studied by searching for resistance genes present in the bacteria responsible for different resistance mechanisms. Salmonella is one of the leading bacteria causing foodborne diseases worldwide, and its resistance to tetracyclines and sulfonamides has been widely reported. The literature review searched the Virtual Health Library for articles with specific data in the studied samples: the resistance genes found, the primers used in PCR, and the thermocycler conditions. The results revealed that Salmonella presented high rates of resistance to tetracycline and sulfonamide, and the most frequent samples used to isolate Salmonella were poultry and pork. The tetracycline resistance genes most frequently detected from Salmonella spp. were tetA followed by tetB. The gene sul1 followed by sul2 were the most frequently sulfonamide resistance genes present in Salmonella. These genes are associated with plasmids, transposons, or both, and are often conjugative, highlighting the transference potential of these genes to other bacteria, environments, animals, and humans.

Abstract
Foodborne pathogen infection is a key issue of food safety. Herein, we developed a label-free assay for Salmonella enterica (S. enterica) detection based on the G-quadruplex-probing CRISPR-Cas12 system (termed G-CRISPR-Cas), allowing highly sensitive detection of S. enterica and investigation of their colonization in chickens. The introduction of the G-quadruplex probe serving as the substrate of Cas 12a realized a label-free analysis for foodborne pathogens. Due to the amplification process induced by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), G-CRISPR-Cas assay can detect S. enterica as low as 20 CFU. Specificity for pathogenic gene detection was guaranteed by the dual recognition process via LAMP primers and Cas 12a-guided RNA binding. The G-CRISPR-Cas assay was applied to explore S. enterica colonization in the intestinal tract and organs of chickens and showed the risk of S. enterica infection outside of the intestinal tract. The G-CRISPR-Cas assay is promising for on-site diagnosis of the infection or contamination of foodborne pathogens outside the laboratories, such as abattoirs and markets.

Abstract
This systematic review focuses on obtaining the most relevant information from multiple studies that detected a mobilized colistin resistance mcr gene in Salmonella for a better comprehension of its global distribution. A group of strategic and systematic keywords were combined to retrieve research data on the detection frequency of the mcr gene globally from four database platforms (Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed and Scielo). Forty-eight studies attended all the eligibility criteria and were selected. China was the country with the highest frequency of Salmonella strains with the mcr gene, and Europe exhibited a wide diversity of countries with positive mcr strains. In addition, animals and humans carried the highest frequency of positive strains for the mcr gene. Salmonella Typhimurium was the most frequent serovar carrying the mcr gene. Apparently, colistin overuse in animal husbandry has increased the selective pressure of antimicrobial resistance, resulting in the emergence of a plasmid-mediated colistin resistance mcr gene in China. The mcr-positive Salmonella strains are recently predominant worldwide, which is probably due to the capacity of this gene to be swiftly horizontally transmissible. The transmission ability of mcr-positive Salmonella strains to humans through the consumption of contaminated animal-based food is a public health concern.

Abstract
Salmonella is considered one of the major foodborne pathogens associated with severe infections. Little attempt has been focused on the distribution of Salmonella in retail meats and the analysis of its phenotypic characteristics in Anhui Province. The aim of this study was to characterize the prevalence of Salmonella serovars, antimicrobial susceptibility, antimicrobial resistance genes, and virulence genes in Salmonella recovered from retail meats in Anhui, China. Out of the 120 samples collected from supermarket chains and open-air markets, 16 samples (13.3%) were positive for Salmonella, of which Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium were the common serotypes. Significant differences in incidence were found between supermarket chains and open-air markets (p < 0.05). Overall, all 16 isolates were resistant to at least two tested antimicrobials, while 12 isolates showed multiple antimicrobial resistant phenotypes. High resistance was observed for ampicillin (87.5%), doxycycline (75.0%), and tetracycline (62.5%). The sul2 was detected in all isolates, and the aac(6')-Ib-cr (93.8%) and the tetA (81.3%) were predominant in 10 resistance genes conferring five classes of antimicrobials. In addition, the correlation between resistance phenotypes and genes of tetracyclines and aminoglycosides was more than 80%. Interestingly, all the Salmonella isolates contained the genes mogA, mgtC, sopB, and spvB, whereas the siiE was variably represented. The findings in this study showed high prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, and the existence of virulence genes, suggesting that effective measures are required to ensure microbial safety from retail meats.

Abstract
Background Infection with Salmonella enterica usually results in diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, but some people become asymptomatic or chronic carrier as a source of infection for others. This study aimed to analyze the difference in serotype, antimicrobial resistance, and genetic profiles between Salmonella strains isolated from patients and those from asymptomatic people in Nantong city, China. Methods A total of 88 Salmonella strains were collected from patients and asymptomatic people from 2017 to 2018. Serotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and PFGE analysis were performed to analyze the characteristics of these strains. Results Twenty serotypes belonging to 8 serogroups were identified in the 88 Salmonella strains. S. Typhimurium remained to be the predominant serotype in strains from both patients and asymptomatic people. Among the 27 strains from patients, S. Enteritidis and S. Rissen were shown as the other two major serotypes, while S. London, S. Derby, and S. Meleagridis were demonstrated as the other significant serotypes among the 61 strains from asymptomatic people. Antimicrobial resistance testing revealed that 84.1% of strains from both resources were multi-drug resistant. PFGE displayed a highly discriminative ability to differentiate strains belonging to S. Derby, S. Typhimurium, etc., but could not efficiently differentiate serotypes like S. Enteritidis. Conclusions This study’s results demonstrated that S. Typhimurium could cause human infection in both symptomatic and asymptomatic state; S. London, S. Derby, and S. Meleagridis usually cause asymptomatic infection, while S. Enteritidis infection mainly results in human diseases. The high multi-drug resistance rate detected in the antimicrobial resistance and diverse PFGE profiles of these strains implied that the strains were isolated from different sources, and the increased surveillance of Salmonella from both patients and asymptomatic people should be taken to control the disease. Abstract
Pig is usually the carrier of Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus, and can transmit the bacteria along the pork production chain to cause severe public health problems. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of Salmonella and S. aureus in fattening pigs in Hubei Province, China. The overall prevalence of Salmonella in rectal swab among 896 samples from 22 farms was 17.30%, and that of S. aureus in nasal swab among 814 samples from 20 farms was 28.26%. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) analysis showed that 95.33% of the Salmonella strains exhibited resistance to more than three classes of antimicrobial agents tested. The highest resistance proportions were for chloramphenicol (100%), sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SXT) (100%), and tetracycline (TET) (93.46%), while the lowest proportions were for cefotaxime (37.38%), gentamicin (GEN) (34.58%), and ciprofloxacin (24.30%). On the other hand, 98.42% of the S. aureus strains were resistant to more than three classes of antimicrobial agents tested. The most common resistance among the S. aureus strains was against SXT (100.00%), followed by TET (98.43%), erythromycin (91.34%), and clindamycin (91.34%), while the lowest frequent resistances were against GEN (34.65%) and oxacillin (16.54%). The prevalence and AMR of Salmonella and S. aureus exhibited an obvious diversity among different pig farms. Our results provided the epidemiological data for risk analysis of foodborne bacteria and AMR in pig farms.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica remains one of the leading causes of foodborne bacterial disease. Retail meat is a major source of human salmonellosis. However, comparative genomic analyses of S. enterica isolates from retail meat from different sources in China are lacking. A total of 341 S. enterica strains were isolated from retail meat in sixteen districts of Beijing, China, at three different time points (January 1st, May 1st, and October 1st) in 2017. Comparative genomics was performed to investigate the genetic diversity, virulence and antimicrobial resistance gene (ARG) profiles of these isolates. The most common serotype was S. Enteritidis (203/341, 59.5%), which dominated among isolates from three different time points during the year. Laboratory retesting confirmed the accuracy of the serotyping results predicted by the Salmonella In Silico Typing Resource (SISTR) (96.5%). The pangenome of the 341 S. enterica isolates contained 13,931 genes, and the core genome contained 3,635 genes. Higher Salmonella phage 118970 sal3 (219/341, 64.2%) and Gifsy-2 (206/341, 60.4%) prevalence contributed to the diversity of the accessory genes, especially those with unknown functions. IncFII(S), IncX1, and IncFIB(S) plasmid replicons were more common in these isolates and were major sources of horizontally acquired foreign genes. The virulence gene profile showed fewer virulence genes associated with type III secretion systems in certain isolates from chicken. A total of 88 different ARGs were found in the 341 isolates. Three beta-lactamases, namely, blaCTX–M–55 (n = 15), blaCTX–M–14 (n = 11), and blaCTX–M–65 (n = 11), were more prevalent in retail meats. The emergence of qnrE1 and blaCTX–M–123 indicated a potential increase in the prevalence of retail meats. After the prohibition of colistin in China, three and four isolates were positive for the colistin resistance genes mcr-1.1 and mcr-9, respectively. Thus, we explored the evolution and genomic features of S. enterica isolates from retail meats in Beijing, China. The diverse ARGs of these isolates compromise food security and are a clinical threat.

Abstract
Colistin is considered the last resort for the treatment of multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. We studied colistin resistance and the mcr-1 gene carriage in Salmonella isolates recovered from food animals in South Korea between 2010 and 2018. Colistin resistance was found in 277 isolates, predominantly in Salmonella Enteritidis (57.1%) and Salmonella Gallinarum (41.9%). However, the mcr-1 gene was identified in only one colistin-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium (MIC = 16 µg/mL) isolated from a healthy pig. The mcr-1 carrying isolate presented additional resistance to multiple antimicrobials. The strain belonged to sequence type (ST)19 and carried various virulence factor genes that are associated with adhesion and invasion of Salmonella into intestinal epithelial cells, as well as its survival in macrophages. The mcr-1 gene was identified on an IncI2 plasmid and it was also transferred to the E. coli J53 recipient strain. The mcr-1-carrying plasmid (pK18JST013) in this study was closely related to that previously reported in S. Indiana (pCFSA664-3) from chicken in China. This is the first report of mcr-1 carrying S. Typhimurium in South Korea. The finding indicates the importance of regular screening for the presence of the mcr-1 gene in S. Typhimurium in food animals to prevent the spread to humans.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence, serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella isolated from retail meat in Southern China, and to characterize the major mechanisms that mediate the ciprofloxacin resistance of isolates. High levels of Salmonella contamination were detected in pork (67.0%), duck (50.5%) and chicken (46.2%). Thirty different serotypes were identified among 500 detected Salmonella isolates, as well as significant differences in serotypes between different retail meat samples. Notably, 405 (80.1%) isolates exhibited multidrug resistance (MDR). Meanwhile, we also found that 74 (14.8%) Salmonella isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin and the major mechanisms underlying this resistance were investigated. The commonest mutations in gyrA S83F (40.5%) and D87N (35.1%), and in parC was T57S (71.6%) and S80I (35.1%). Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis revealed that the S. Kentucky isolates that were resistant to ciprofloxacin mostly belonged to ST198 (21/23, 91.3%) and PFGE revealed the presence of various genotypes. This study identified a diversity of Salmonella serotypes and a high prevalence of multidrug resistance (MDR) among Salmonella isolated from retail meat in Southern China, which indicates that foodborne Salmonella potentially constitutes a potential food safety risk.

Abstract
Salmonella is a major zoonotic foodborne pathogen that persists on poultry farms worldwide. The present study aimed to survey the prevalence of Salmonella and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) recovered from broiler chickens in Shandong Province, China. A total of 280 Salmonella isolates were identified from 923 broiler chicken samples between 2013 and 2018. Among the isolates, S. Enteritidis (n = 128, 45.7%) was the predominant serovar, and high antimicrobial resistance rates to piperacillin (PIP) (n = 123, 96.1%), ampicillin (AM) (n = 122, 95.3%), nitrofurantoin (FT) (n = 106, 96.1%), and tetracycline (TE) (n = 93, 72.7%) were observed in S. Enteritidis. A total of 96 (75.0%) S. Enteritidis isolates presented with multidrug resistance, the most frequent of which were the combination of AM, PIP, TE, and FT. Resistance to fluoroquinolone tended to increase during 2013 to 2018. Our findings provide important and updated information about the baseline antimicrobial-resistant data for food safety and a risk assessment of S. Enteritidis from broiler chickens in Shandong Province and will be helpful for future surveillance activities to ensure the safety of the chicken supply.

Abstract
The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AR) Salmonella has a major concern worldwide. This study was designed to determine the AR profiles and serovars distribution of Salmonella enterica isolated from different breeds of breeder chickens in the province of Henan, China. For this, 2,139 dead embryo samples were collected from 28 breeder chicken hatcheries, representing two domestic and four foreign breeds. The samples were subjected to the isolation and identification of Salmonella by PCR. The confirmed strains were serotyped according to the Kauffmann-White scheme and their AR profiles against 20 antimicrobial agents were determined by Kirby-Bauer (K-B) disc diffusion method. The results of this study showed the prevalence of Salmonella in 504 strains (23.56%) with a high abundance in southern regions of Yellow River (28.66%, n = 495, N = 1,727) compared to the northern regions (2.18%, n = 9, N = 412) (p < 0.0001). The domestic breeds were more contaminated than imported breeds (p < 0.0001). However, the contamination rate of samples recovered from M-hatcheries was the highest (p < 0.0001). Serotyping method identified 12 serovars, with the dominance of S. Pullorum (75.79%), followed by S. Enteritidis (7.14%). The AR assay showed high resistant to ciprofloxacin (77.00%), sulfisoxazole (73.00%), and ampicillin (55.60%), as well as 98.81% (n = 498) of the isolated strains, were resistant to at least one antimicrobial and 69.64% (n = 351) were resistant to three or more antimicrobials. Among them, one strain of S. Thompson was resistant to 15 antimicrobial agents belonging to eight different classes. In conclusion, Salmonella strains isolated in this study were multidrug-resistant (MDR), presenting a serious problem for human and animal health. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor, control, and rationalize the use of antimicrobials agents in chicken farms in order to limit the increasing resistance against the recent antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
The prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic Salmonella is a significant ongoing concern over the world. Several reports have investigated the prevalence of Salmonella infections in the farm animals in China; however, there is only limited knowledge about the Salmonella cross-contamination in the slaughterhouses. Moreover, the application of genomic approaches for understanding the cross-contamination in the food-animal slaughterhouses is still in its infancy in China. In the present study, we have isolated 105 Salmonella strains from pig carcasses and environment samples collected from four independent slaughterhouses in Jiangsu, China. All the Salmonella isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing, bioinformatics analysis for serovar predictions, multi-locus sequence types, antimicrobial resistance genes, and plasmid types by using the in-house Galaxy platform. The antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolates was determined using a minimal inhibitory concentration assay with 14 antimicrobials. We found that the predominant serovar and serogroup was S. Derby and O:4(B), with a prevalence of 41.9 and 55%, respectively. All the isolates were multidrug-resistant and the highest resistance was observed against antimicrobials tetracycline (95.4%) and trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (90.9%). Additionally, the colistin-resistant determinant mcr-1 gene was detected in five (4.8%) strains. Our study demonstrated the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella strains isolated from pig slaughterhouses in China and suggested that the genomic platform can serve as routine surveillance along with the food-chain investigation.

Abstract
Colistin is an important antibiotic currently used to manage infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens in both humans and livestock animals. A new mobile colistin-resistance (mcr-9) gene was recently discovered; this discovery highlighted the need for rigorous monitoring of bacterial resistance against colistin. Salmonella is one of the major pathogens responsible for foodborne illnesses; however, there is minimal information regarding the presence of mcr genes in foodborne Salmonella strains. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of mcr genes among 178 Salmonella strains isolated from chicken meat in Korea. Antimicrobial susceptibility was measured using the broth microdilution method. Bioinformatics characterization of colistin-resistant strains and genetic environment of the mcr-9 gene were analyzed using next-generation sequencing. Transferability of the mcr-9 carrying colistin-resistant Salmonella strain was tested using broth-mating conjugation. Thirteen of the 178 Salmonella isolates showed colistin resistance, but only one strain, Salmonella Dessau ST14 (KUFSE-SAL043) from a traditional chicken market in Korea, carried an mcr family gene, mcr-9. This strain also carried other acquired antimicrobial resistance genes such as blaTEM-1B, qnrS1, and aac(6')-Iaa. Only the IncX1 plasmid replicon type was detected in this strain. In the strain KUFSE-SAL043, the mcr-9 gene was located between two insertion sequences, IS903B and IS26, followed by the downstream regulatory genes qseB-like and qseC-like, which were located between IS1R and ΔIS1R. Conjugation tests revealed that the mcr-9 gene was successfully transferred to Escherichia coli J53 at a mean frequency of 2.03 × 10-7. This is the first report of a transferable mcr-9 gene in Salmonella isolated from chicken meat in Korea, highlighting the possibility of transfer of colistin resistance. Therefore, the wide use of colistin should be reconsidered, and a One Health perspective should be adopted to monitor the antimicrobial resistance of Enterobacteriaceae strains in humans, livestock, and the environment.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore the genetic and biological features of the tet(M)-harboring plasmid pTS14 in Salmonella enterica strain S14 isolated from a chicken fecal sample. Plasmid pTS14 was identified by conjugation, S1-pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), Southern hybridization, and plasmid sequencing. The biological characteristics of pTS14 were assessed via stability, growth kinetics, and starvation survival experiments. Strain S14, belonging to ST3007, harbored a 119-kb tet(M)-bearing IncF2:A1:B1 conjugative plasmid pTS14. The plasmid pTS14 contained a novel transposon Tn6709 with the genetic structure IS26-tnpA1-tnpA2-Δorf13-LP-tet(M)-tnpX-ΔtnpR-IS26, and the resistance genes tet(B), tet(D), strAB, sul2, and blaTEM–1b. In addition, pTS14 was found to be highly stable in the recipient strain E. coli J53. The transconjugant TS14 exhibited a higher survival ratio than E. coli J53 under permanent starvation-induced stress. The tet(M)-bearing IncF2 epidemic plasmid lineage may accelerate the dissemination of tet(M) and other genes by coselection, which could constitute a potentially serious threat to clinical treatment regimens.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide public health threat. Farm animals are important sources of bacteria containing antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Although the use of antimicrobials in aquaculture and livestock has been reduced in several countries, these compounds are still routinely applied in animal production, and contribute to ARGs emergence and spread among bacteria. ARGs are transmitted to humans mainly through the consumption of products of animal origin (PAO). Bacteria can present intrinsic resistance, and once antimicrobials are administered, this resistance may be selected and multiply. The exchange of genetic material is another mechanism used by bacteria to acquire resistance. Some of the main ARGs found in bacteria present in PAO are the bla, mcr-1, cfr and tet genes, which are directly associated to antibiotic resistance in the human clinic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The heightened prevalence of Salmonella Typhimurium remains a public health and food safety concern. Studies have reported antibiotic, flavophospholipol, may have the ability to reduce Salmonella in swine, as well as alter the gut microbiota in favour of beneficial bacteria by inhibiting pathogenic bacteria. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the fecal microbiota of weaned pigs receiving in-feed flavophospholipol and challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium. RESULTS Twenty-one weaned pigs were fed either a diet containing 4 ppm of flavophospholipol (treatment group) or a non-medicated feed (control group) for 36 days post-weaning (Day 1 to Day 36). The pigs were orally challenged with a 2 mL dose of 108 CFU/mL of S. Typhimurium at Day 7 and Day 8. Community bacterial DNA extracted from fecal samples collected at Day 6 (before challenge) and Day 36 (28 days after challenge) were used to assess the fecal microbiota using the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene with Illumina MiSeq next-generation sequencing. Sequencing data were visualized using mothur and analyzed in JMP and R software. The fecal microbiota of pigs in the treatment group had differences in abundance of phyla (Firmicutes, Proteobacteria) and genera (Lactobacillus, Roseburia, Treponema, unclassified Ruminococcaceae, Blautia, Streptococcus, Megasphaera, Dorea, Sporobacter, Peptococcus, unclassified Firmicutes, Clostridium IV and Campylobacter) when compared to pigs that were controls, 28 days after challenge with Salmonella (P < 0.05). Specifically, results demonstrated a significant increase in phylum Proteobacteria (P = 0.001) and decrease in Firmicutes (P = 0.012) and genus Roseburia (P = 0.003) in the treated pigs suggestive of possible microbial dysbiosis. An increased abundance of genera Lactobacillus (P = 0.012) was also noted in the treated group in comparison to the control. CONCLUSION Based on these findings, it is difficult to conclude whether treatment with 4 ppm of flavophospholipol is promoting favorable indigenous bacteria in the pig microbiota as previous literature has suggested.

Abstract
A systematic review of antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive bacteria in Africa from a One Health perspective is lacking. Here, we report result from a search for English-language articles on the resistance mechanisms and clonality of Gram-positive bacteria in Africa between 2007 and 2019 reported in PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and African Journals OnLine; 172 studies from 22 different African countries were identified. Resistance genes, such as mecA, erm(B), erm(C), tet(M), tet(K), tet(L), vanB, vanA, vanC, and tet(O), were found to be common. Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., and Streptococcus spp. were the main species reported by the studies, with clones such as Staphylococcus aureus ST5 (n = 218 isolates), ST8 (n = 127 isolates), ST80 (n = 133 isolates), and ST88 (n = 117 isolates), and mobile genetic elements such as IS16 (n = 28 isolates), IS256 (n = 96), Tn916 (n = 107 isolates), and SCCmec (n = 4437 isolates) identified. SCCmec IV (n = 747 isolates) was predominant, followed by SCCmec III (n = 305 isolates), SCCmec II (n = 163 isolates), SCCmec V (n = 135 isolates), and SCCmec I (n = 79 isolates). Resistance to penicillin (n = 5926 isolates), tetracycline (n = 5300 isolates), erythromycin (n = 5151 isolates), rifampicin (n = 3823 isolates), gentamycin (n = 3494 isolates), sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (n = 3089 isolates), and ciprofloxacin (n = 2746 isolates) was common in most reports from 22 countries. Clonal dissemination of resistance across countries and between humans, animals, and the environment was observed. Resistance rates ranged from 1.4% to 100% for 15 of the studies; 10 were One Health-related studies. Strict infection control measures, antimicrobial stewardship, and periodic One Health epidemiological surveillance studies are needed to monitor and contain the threat of increasing antibiotic resistance in Africa.

Abstract
Salmonella is an important cause of foodborne diseases. This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence, serotype distribution, antimicrobial resistance, virulence genes, and genetic diversity of Salmonella isolates recovered from fresh duck meat obtained from retail markets in Southern China. In total, 365 samples of fresh duck meat were collected from retail markets in six different cities of Guangdong Province between May 2017 and April 2019. High levels of Salmonella contamination were detected in duck meat (151/365, 41.4%). Twenty-six different Salmonella serotypes were identified: S. Corvallis (n = 25, 16.6%), S. Kentucky (n = 22, 14.6%) and S. Agona (n = 20, 13.3%) were the most prevalent serotypes. All isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 133 (88.1%) isolates exhibited multidrug resistance (MDR). Most (86.1%) Salmonella isolates carried seven classes of virulence-associated genes. This study showed the diversity of Salmonella serotypes and genotypes and the high prevalence of MDR isolates carrying multiple virulence-associated genes among isolates from duck meat obtained from retail markets in Southern China. Isolates from different districts had similar pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns indicating that circulating foodborne Salmonella constitutes a potential public health issue across different districts.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of Salmonella in three Chinese pig abattoirs (A, B, and C) in Wuhan city in 2016. Four types of pig samples were collected and cultured for Salmonella. Salmonella was detected from 329 samples among the 1440 tested (22.9%). There was no significant difference in the overall prevalence between the first visit and the second visit and among the three abattoirs. Rectal swabs (RS) exhibited a significantly higher prevalence than carcass swabs and pork. A total of 177 isolates were characterized by multilocus sequence typing, serotyping, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Among 17 sequence types (STs) and 13 serotypes detected, ST40, ST469, and ST34, corresponding to serovars Derby, Rissen, and Typhimurium, respectively, were predominant. The isolates from different abattoirs exhibited diverse ST distribution. The minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined using the microdilution broth method. Resistance to at least one of the antimicrobials was observed for 96.6% of the strains (171/177), and multidrug resistant (MDR) isolates accounted for 75.7% of the strains (134/177). The highest resistance proportion was for tetracycline (92.7%), and the lowest was for cefotaxime (14.1%). The isolates from abattoir A exhibited a significantly lower MDR proportion than those from other abattoirs (p < 0.05). The isolates recovered from RS and pork samples exhibited significantly higher MDR proportions than those recovered from carcass swab samples. Notably, among three predominant STs of isolates, the ST34 isolates showed the highest MDR proportion. In view of the high Salmonella prevalence and antimicrobial resistance, great attention must be paid to the monitoring and controlling of Salmonella in a full pork production chain.

Abstract
Worldwide emergence of Salmonella enterica serovar Newport (S. Newport) infection in humans, in parallel with a significant increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AR), is a serious public health concern. However, the prevalence of S. Newport resistance in China remains largely unknown. A retrospective study of 287 S. Newport clinical isolates collected during 1997-2018 was undertaken for characterization of AR profiles using the micro-dilution assay. We found a recent emergence of colistin resistance in four Chinese clinical isolates, including mcr-1-positive isolates. Importantly, phylogenomic and microbiological investigations indicate multiple independent clonal transmission of colistin-resistant S. Newport isolates of different seafood origins. Our study highlights potential reservoirs for transmission of colistin resistance and suggests that the global food supply chain may facilitate this dissemination.

Abstract
Background Salmonella is one of the most important foodborne pathogens, causing outbreaks of human salmonellosis worldwide. Owing to large scales of consumption markets, pork and poultry that contaminated by Salmonella could pose a tremendous threat to public health. The aim of this study was to investigate the contamination of Salmonella from chicken, pork and the environment in slaughtering and retail processes in Chongqing, China. Results A total of 115 Salmonella isolates were recovered from 1112 samples collected from pork, chicken and the environment. Compared with the isolation rate of samples from chicken (9.50%) and the environment (6.23%), samples from pork had a significant higher isolation rate (44.00%). The isolation rates in slaughterhouses (10.76%) and in supermarkets (10.07%) showed no statistical difference. Thirty different serotypes were identified among all the isolates. S. Derby (n = 26), S. London (n = 16) and S. Rissen (n = 12) were the dominant serotypes. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that 73.04% isolates were resistant to tetracycline, followed by 66.96% to ampicillin and 59.13% to doxycycline. More than half (50.43%) of the isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR), and most of the MDR isolates were from supermarkets. Multilocus sequence typing results showed 24 out of 115 isolates were ST40, which was the most prevalent. Furthermore, isolates from supermarkets had 20 different sequence types while isolates from slaughterhouses only had 8 different sequence types. Conclusion Our study highlighted that Salmonella was more frequently isolated in pork production chain than that in chicken. Compared with isolates from slaughterhouses, isolates from supermarkets had more MDR profiles and represented a wider range of serotypes and sequence types, indicating that the retail process had more diverse sources of Salmonella contamination than that of slaughtering process.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of Salmonella in pork on sale in Wuhan, Central China. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 4744 pork samples were collected from retail or wholesale markets in each season from 2016 to 2018. The samples showed an overall Salmonella prevalence of 19·54% (927/4744), among which the samples collected in 2017 (21·67%, 428/1975) possessed a significantly higher prevalence than those collected in 2016 (18·61%, 209/1123) (P = 0·047) or 2018 (17·51%, 290/1656) (P = 0·002), and the samples collected in winter showed the lowest prevalence (15·86%, 177/1116). The Salmonella prevalence was significantly higher among samples from retail markets (25·68%, 283/1102) than wholesale markets (17·68%, 644/3642) (P = 0·000). Antimicrobial resistance of 922 Salmonella strains was tested by determining the minimal inhibitory concentrations using a broth microdilution method. The strains revealed that 98·92% (912/922) were resistant to at least one of the antimicrobial agents, and 80·04% (738/922) were resistant to three or more antimicrobials (MDR). Resistance to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (89·91%), tetracycline (87·20%) and ampicillin (71·69%) was predominant. The proportion of MDR strains in 2017 (93·62%, 396/423) was significantly higher than that in 2016 (63·16%, 132/209) (P = 0·000) or 2018 (69·66%, 202/290) (P = 0·000). No significant difference was observed in the proportions of MDR strains between wholesale markets (76·07%, 213/280) and retail markets (80·53%, 517/642) (P = 0·075). Multi-locus sequence typing for 554 of the isolates revealed 20 different sequence types (STs), among which ST40 (38·27%, 212/554), ST34 (18·41%, 102/554) and ST469 (14·46%, 79/554) were dominant. CONCLUSIONS A high risk of Salmonella prevalence and antimicrobial resistance was observed in pork in Wuhan. The risk varies between different sampling years, seasons and market types. Abstract
Human salmonellosis caused by the consumption of eggs and chicken meat contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis has become a continuing public health concern worldwide. In this study we adopted whole genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the genetic relationship and antimicrobial resistance of S. enterica strains isolated from a poultry breeding enterprise that consists of one breeding chicken farm, one egg hatchery and one commercial chicken farm. A total of 148 S. enterica including 147 S. Enteritidis strains were isolated from 2100 fecal swab samples, with 16 (5.3 %, 16/300) from breeding chicken farm, 38 (4.2 %, 38/900) from egg hatchery and 94 (10.4 %, 94/900) from commercial chicken farm. WGS revealed that all 147 S. Enteritidis strains belonged to ST11, and further divided into 4 different ribosomal STs and 64 core genome STs. Single nucleotide polymorphism typing suggested the presence of the vertical transmission of S. Enteritidis from breeding chicken to commercial chicken. Three different antimicrobial-resistant plasmids including one blaCTX-M-14-carrying plasmid and two virulence-resistance plasmids were characterized, resulting in the heterogeneous antimicrobial resistance of clonally related S. Enteritidis strains. Routine surveillance in breeding chicken farms is conducive to the control of S. Enteritidis from farm to fork.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determinate the prevalence of Salmonella in retail foods and its resistance to quinolones in retail foods in Lanzhou, People's Republic of China. In this work, 2,182 food samples, collected from March 2015 to December 2018, were analyzed to detect Salmonella and then analyzed for serotype distribution, quinolone resistance, and quinolone-resistant gene detection. The findings demonstrate that the overall prevalence of Salmonella in these food categories was low. A total of 41 (1.9%) of 2,182 food samples were found to be positive for Salmonella. Ten distinct serovars were identified, and Salmonella Derby, Salmonella Anatum, and Salmonella Enteritidis were the most prevalent serovars. According to the broth microdilution test, the resistance percentages were 90.2% to nalidixic acid, 39.0% to enrofloxacin, 41.5% to ciprofloxacin, 29.3% to ofloxacin, and 26.8% to levofloxacin. Among the quinolone-resistant isolates, 12 strains had a single mutation in gyrA at codon 83 (Ser→Phe) or codon 87 (Asp→Asn or Asp→Gly). Five isolates had one parC mutation (Ser80→Arg) and one or two gyrA hot spot mutations. qnr genes were found in seven isolates (five qnrB and two qnrD), and the aac(6')-Ib gene in seven isolates. Two isolates carry both qnrB and aac(6')-Ib-cr genes. Based on these results, a low prevalence of Salmonella contamination in retail foods was found, but it might play a potential risk factor in the spread of quinolone-resistant Salmonella strains in the Lanzhou region.

Abstract
Although edible offal can be easily contaminated with foodborne bacteria and regarded as important transfers of antimicrobial resistance to humans, the characterization of bacteria from edible offal have not been researched sufficiently. This study is the first to focus on the molecular characterization of Salmonella isolated from edible pork offal. From a total of 52 Salmonella isolates from edible pork offal, 44 (80.7%) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent and 24 (46.2%) exhibited multidrug resistance (MDR). All MDR Salmonella were also resistant to β-lactams and 12 (50.0%) of the isolates were positive for blaTEM-1. Eleven (68.8%) of the 16 gentamicin-resistant isolates harbored the ant(2'')-I gene. Among 18 tetracycline-resistant isolates, tetA and tetB genes were found in 9 (50.0%) and 3 (16.7%) isolates, respectively. The sul1 gene was identified in 9 (81.8%) of 11 trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole-resistant isolates, and the cmlA gene was identified in only 2 (18.1%) among 11 chloramphenicol-resistant isolates. Eighteen (75.0%) of the 24 MDR Salmonella were identified as containing class 1 integrons, within which dfrA12-aadA2 (55.6%) was the most prevalent resistance gene cassettes. Twenty-one (87.5%) of the MDR isolates were also found to have the plasmid replicons. Replicon B/O (41.7%) was the most prevalent replicon types. These results suggest that edible pork offal can become a reservoir that not only harbors MDR Salmonella, but also contributes to their dissemination through cross-contamination processes.

Abstract
Salmonella spp. are among the most important foodborne pathogens and the third leading cause of human death among diarrheal diseases worldwide. Animals are the primary source of this pathogen, and animal-based foods are the main transmission route to humans. Thus, understanding the global epidemiology of Salmonella serovars is key to controlling and monitoring this bacterium. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and diversity of Salmonella enterica serovars in animal-based foods (beef, pork, poultry, and seafood) throughout the five continents (Africa, the Americas [North and Latin America], Asia, Europe, and Oceania). The meta-analysis consisted of a chemometric assessment (hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis) to identify the main epidemiological findings, including the prevalence and diversity of the Salmonella serovars in each matrix. Regarding the serovar distribution, S Typhimurium presented a cosmopolitan distribution, reported in all four assessed matrices and continents; poultry continues to play a central role in the dissemination of the Enteritidis serovar to humans, and Anatum and Weltevreden were the most frequently found in beef and seafood, respectively. Additionally, we recommended careful monitoring of certain serovars, such as Derby, Agona, Infantis, and Kentucky. Finally, given the scientific data regarding the most frequently reported serovars and which matrices constitute the main vehicles for the transmission of this pathogen, control programs may be improved, and specific interventions may be implemented in an attempt to reduce the risk of this pathogen reaching humans.IMPORTANCE Salmonellosis is caused by Salmonella spp. and is the third leading cause of death among food-transmitted diseases. This pathogen is commonly disseminated in domestic and wild animals, and the infection's symptoms are characterized by acute fever, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The animals are the primary source of salmonellae, and animal-based foods are the main transmission route to humans. Therefore, data collected from these sources could contribute to future global interventions for effective control and surveillance of Salmonella along the food chain. In light of this, the importance of our research is in identifying the prevalence of Salmonella serovars in four animal-based food matrices (pork, poultry, beef, and seafood) and to evaluate the importance that each matrix has as the primary source of this pathogen to humans.

Abstract
Polymyxins are important lipopeptide antibiotics that serve as the last-line defense against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacterial infections. Worryingly, the clinical utility of polymyxins is currently facing a serious threat with the global dissemination of mcr, plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance. The first plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance gene, termed as mcr-1 was identified in China in November 2015. Following its discovery, isolates carrying mcr, mainly mcr-1 and less commonly mcr-2 to -7, have been reported across Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. This review covers the epidemiological, microbiological and genomics aspects of this emerging threat to global human health. The mcr has been identified in various species of Gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Salmonella enterica, Cronobacter sakazakii, Kluyvera ascorbata, Shigella sonnei, Citrobacter freundii, Citrobacter braakii, Raoultella ornithinolytica, Proteus mirabilis, Aeromonas, Moraxella and Enterobacter species from animal, meat, food product, environment and human sources. More alarmingly is the detection of mcr in extended-spectrum-β-lactamases- and carbapenemases-producing bacteria. The mcr can be carried by different plasmids, demonstrating the high diversity of mcr plasmid reservoirs. Our review analyses the current knowledge on the emergence of mcr-mediated polymyxin resistance.

Abstract
Salmonella is one of the most important foodborne pathogens associated with animal and human diseases. In this study, 672 samples of fresh meat (pork, 347; chicken, 196; and duck, 129) were collected from retail markets in different provinces of China from 2010 to 2014. We identified 10 different serotypes among 80 Salmonella isolates, whereas 12 isolates were nonmotile precluding conventional identification of complete serotype. Among these 92 isolates, Salmonella enterica serovar Derby (n = 21) was the most prevalent serotype, followed by Salmonella Enteritidis (n = 17), Salmonella Typhimurium (n = 15), Salmonella Indiana (n = 9), Salmonella Agona (n = 7), and Salmonella Assinie (n = 5). Antimicrobial resistance testing for 18 antimicrobial agents revealed that all 92 isolates were resistant to at least 1 antimicrobial agent, and 39 different resistance profiles were identified. The highest resistance was to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (n = 87), followed by tetracycline (n = 51), carbenicillin (n = 38), amoxicillin/A.clav (n = 30), and piperacillin (n = 24). Our results demonstrated that meats presented a potential public health risk, thereby underlining the necessity for local regulatory enforcement agencies in China to monitor salmonellosis.

Abstract
Colistin is widely used in food-animal production. Salmonella enterica is a zoonotic pathogen, which can pass from animal to human microbiota through the consumption of contaminated food, and cause disease, often severe, especially in young children, elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Recently, plasmid-mediated colistin resistance was recognised; mcr-like genes are being identified worldwide. Colistin is not an antibiotic used to treat Salmonella infections, but has been increasingly used as one of the last treatment options for carbapenem resistant Enterobacteria in human infections. The finding of mobilizable mcr-like genes became a global concern due to the possibility of horizontal transfer of the plasmid that often carry resistance determinants to beta-lactams and/or quinolones. An understanding of the origin and dissemination of mcr-like genes in zoonotic pathogens such as S. enterica will facilitate the management of colistin use and target interventions to prevent further spread. The main objective of this review was to collect epidemiological data about mobilized colistin resistance in S. enterica, describing the mcr variants, identified serovars, origin of the isolate, country and other resistance genes located in the same genetic platform.

Abstract
Salmonellosis remains one of the most frequent foodborne zoonosis, constituting a worldwide major public health concern. The most frequent sources of human infections are food products of animal origin, being pork meat one of the most relevant. Currently, particular pig food production well-adapted and persistent Salmonella enterica serotypes (e.g., Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella 1,4,[5],12:i:-, Salmonella Derby and Salmonella Rissen) are frequently reported associated with human infections in diverse industrialized countries. The dissemination of those clinically-relevant Salmonella serotypes/clones has been related to the intensification of pig production chain and to an increase in the international trade of pigs and pork meat. Those changes that occurred over the years along the food chain may act as food chain drivers leading to new problems and challenges, compromising the successful control of Salmonella. Among those, the emergence of antibiotic resistance in non-typhoidal Salmonella associated with antimicrobials use in the pig production chain is of special concern for public health. The transmission of pig-related multidrug-resistant Salmonella serotypes, clones and/or genetic elements carrying clinically-relevant antibiotic resistance genes, frequently associated with metal tolerance genes, from pigs and pork meat to humans, has been reported and highlights the contribution of different drivers to the antibiotic resistance burden. Gathered data strengthen the need for global mandatory interventions and strategies for effective Salmonella control and surveillance across the pig production chain. The purpose of this review was to provide an overview of the role of pig and pork meat in human salmonellosis at a global scale, highlighting the main factors contributing to the persistence and dissemination of clinically-relevant pig-related Salmonella serotypes and clones.
