Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Insulin Secretion, Insulin Sensitivity, and Other Hormonal Regulations

The reference curves of percentile for the length and head circumference of infants aged 0-1 year in Hainan Province, China

We first established percentile reference curves for infant length and head circumference in Hainan Province based on gender and age in months and compared them with the 2022 national standards and World Health Organization (WHO) standards. This cross-sectional survey involved 2736 infants (1471 boys and 1265 girls) in 18 cities and counties in Hainan Province. Standardized instruments were used to measure head circumference and length. Reference values for Hainan infants' length and head circumference were determined using the LMS method. Curves were generated using the LMS Chart Maker software. According to the newly established reference curves, the length and head circumference of Hainan infants exhibited a consistent trend of steady growth. However, the average head circumference was below the 2022 national reference values and WHO standards. The mean length was lower than the new national reference values but roughly consistent with the WHO standards. Differences exist in infant length and head circumference in Hainan compared to national and global averages. To enhance infant length and head circumference growth, the health department should encourage exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, ensure infants' sleep needs at night, and promote the regularity of vitamin D supplementation during the perinatal period.

Infant sleep and its relation with cognition and growth: a narrative review

OBJECTIVE

Infant sleep development is a highly dynamic process occurring in parallel to and in interaction with cognitive and physical growth. This narrative review aims to summarize and discuss recent literature and provide an overview of the relation between infant sleep and cognitive development as well as physical growth.

METHODS

We conducted online literature search using MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. We considered original research on humans published in the English language from January 2005 to December 2015. Search terms included "sleep" AND "infant" AND "cognition" OR "memory" OR "executive functioning", OR "growth" OR "obesity" OR "growth hormone" OR "stunting", and combinations thereof.

RESULTS

Ten studies on infant sleep and cognition were included in this review. Overall, findings indicated a positive association between sleep, memory, language, executive function, and overall cognitive development in typically developing infants and young children. An additional 20 studies support the positive role of infant sleep in physical growth, with the current literature focusing largely on weight gain and obesity rather than healthy growth. Existing evidence in both the domains is mainly based on cross-sectional designs, on association studies, and on parental reports. In contrast, there were limited studies on longitudinal sleep trajectories and intervention effects, or studies have not used more objective sleep measures such as actigraphy and polysomnography.

CONCLUSION

The reviewed studies support a critical and positive role of infant sleep in cognition and physical growth. Future studies should consider key environmental and parental confounders, include a combination of more objective (actigraphy) and subjective measures (sleep diaries and questionnaires), and move towards longitudinal trajectory designs of infant sleep and development.

Physician-diagnosed restless legs syndrome in a large sample of primary medical care patients in western Europe: Prevalence and characteristics

BACKGROUND

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a medical condition with established neuropathology and genetic associations. Significant questions have, however, recently been raised about its true prevalence, medical significance and the degree to which it is under or over-diagnosed. This study therefore aimed to determine its prevalence, morbidity and adequacy of diagnosis based on physician evaluations of their own patients in primary care practice.

METHODS

Screening questionnaires were completed by adult patients attending 62 primary care practices across six western European countries within a one-week period. Patients screening positive for significant RLS symptoms were clinically evaluated for RLS by their physician. Physicians also classified the degree RLS affected the patient's health and well-being. Patients independently completed the SF-36 Quality of Life and Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) sleep questionnaires.

RESULTS

Ten thousand five hundred and sixty-four patients completed the screening questionnaire; 804 responded positively to RLS symptoms and 630 of these were subsequently evaluated by their physician. The physicians diagnosed RLS in 365 patients. Ninety-one percent of these had not been previously diagnosed with RLS. In this cohort of adult primary care patients (without or with prorating for missed interviews) the estimated prevalence for diagnosed RLS was 3.5% or 4.4% and for medically-significant RLS 2.1% or 2.7%. A moderate to high degree of RLS negative impact on health related strongly to a lower vitality subscale on the SF-36 and short sleep times (5.2-5.4h) with more sleep disturbance on the MOS sleep scale.

CONCLUSION

RLS in these western European countries is a common, clinically-significant medical condition that, despite all the publicity, remains largely undiagnosed. RLS evaluation is particularly recommended for patients complaining of insomnia.
