Abstract
Due to the paucity of existing evidence, this study aims to investigate the relationship between chronic disease, sensory impairment, walking limitation, and difficulty in activities of daily living (ADLs) in community-dwelling older Indians. This cross-sectional study included data from 31,394 individuals aged ≥ 60 years from the 2017 to 2018 Longitudinal Ageing Study in India. Participants were divided into 2 groups: 12,993 with chronic disease, sensory impairment, and a walking limitation, and 18,401 healthy individuals without such conditions. Participants with any chronic disease were further divided into 2 groups: sensory impairment (n = 12,462), and a walking limitation (n = 4745). Self-reported close-ended questionnaires with yes or no were used to assess each chronic disease (such as hypertension, diabetes, lung disorders, joint disorders, or heart disease), sensory impairment (vision or hearing), and walking limitation. A walking limitation was defined as being when a person could only walk at their usual pace for less than 500 meters on a flat surface. ADLs were assessed and classified as physical ADLs including basic physical requirements like dressing. Instrumental ADLs (IADLs) included more complicated community-based tasks like meal preparation. Findings showed that older Indians with chronic disease, sensory impairment, and a walking limitation were more likely to be significantly associated with physical ADLs (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.34-1.57, P < .0001) and IADLs (aOR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.70-2.03, P < .0001) than those without such conditions. Among older Indians with chronic disease, sensory impairment was more likely associated with physical ADLs (aOR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.82-2.16, P < .0001) and IADLs (aOR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.15-1.37, P < .0001) followed by a walking limitation (aOR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.42-1.65, P < .0001; aOR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.17-1.38, P < .0001, respectively). These findings suggest that older Indians with chronic disease, sensory impairment, and walking limitation, can experience increased difficulty in overall and individual physical ADL and IADL than those without these conditions. Older Indians with any chronic condition who had sensory impairment or a walking limitation were also more likely to have difficulty with physical ADLs and IADLs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing and vision difficulties are some of the most common deficits experienced by older adults. Having either visual or hearing difficulties increases the risk of comorbidity, disability, and poor quality of life. So far, however, few studies have examined the association between vision and hearing difficulties on life expectancy without activities of daily living (ADL) or instrumental ADL (IADL) limitations (LEWL). METHODS Data came from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and the Health and Retirement Study in the United States from 2002 to 2013. The outcome was defined as reporting 2+ limitations with ADL/IADL. Life expectancy was estimated by discrete-time multistate life table models for hearing and vision difficulties separately as well as for combined vision and hearing difficulties by sex and age. RESULTS Thirteen percent of men in England and the United States had ADL/IADL limitations, whereas, for women, it was 16% and 19% in England and the United States. At all ages, either vision or hearing difficulty was associated with shorter LEWL compared to no difficulties. Dual sensory difficulty (vision and hearing) reduced LEWL by up to 12 years in both countries. At the ages of 50 and 60 in England, hearing difficulty was associated with fewer years lived without ADL/IADL limitations than vision difficulty. In contrast, in the United States, vision difficulty led to fewer years lived without ADL/IADL limitations than hearing difficulty. CONCLUSIONS The implementation of strategies to reduce the prevalence and incidence of vision and hearing difficulties has the potential to increase the number of years spent without ADL/IADL limitations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing loss has been identified as an independent risk factor for negative health outcomes and mortality. However, whether rehabilitation with hearing aid use is associated with lower mortality is currently unknown. This study aimed to examine the associations of hearing loss, hearing aid use, and mortality in the USA. METHODS In this cross-sectional, follow-up study, we assessed 9885 adults (age 20 years and older) who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2012 and completed audiometry and hearing aid use questionnaires (1863 adults with hearing loss). Main measures included hearing loss (speech-frequency pure-tone average) and hearing aid use (never users, non-regular users, and regular users). Mortality status of the cohort was linked to the National Death Index up to Dec 31, 2019. Cox proportional regression models were used to examine the association between hearing loss, hearing aid use, and mortality while adjusting for demographics and medical history. FINDINGS The cohort consisted of 9885 participants, of which 5037 (51·0%) were female and 4848 (49·0%) were male with a mean age of 48·6 years (SD 18·1) at baseline. The weighted prevalence of audiometry-measured hearing loss was 14·7% (95% CI 13·3-16·3%) and the all-cause mortality rate was 13·2% (12·1-14·4) at a median 10·4 years of follow-up (range 0·1-20·8). The rate of regular hearing aid use among adults with hearing loss was 12·7% (95% CI 10·6-15·1). Hearing loss was an independent risk factor associated with higher mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1·40 [95% CI 1·21-1·62]). Among individuals with hearing loss, the adjusted mortality risk was lower among regular hearing aid users in comparison with never users (adjusted HR 0·76 [0·60-0·95]) accounting for demographics, hearing levels, and medical history. There was no difference in adjusted mortality between non-regular hearing aid users and never users (adjusted HR 0·93 [0·70-1·24]). INTERPRETATION Regular hearing aid use was associated with lower risks of mortality than in never users in US adults with hearing loss when accounting for age, hearing loss, and other potential confounders. Future research is needed to investigate the potential protective role of hearing aid use against mortality for adults with hearing loss. FUNDING None.

Abstract
This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the influence of hearing loss on social participation in older adults and including its facilitators and barriers. Following the rigorous methodological framework of scoping studies, nine multidisciplinary databases were searched with 44 keywords. Published mainly in the last decade, 41 studies using primarily a quantitative cross-sectional design were selected. Older adults with hearing loss have been found to have difficulty maintaining relationships and social activities. While social support and engaged-coping strategies were major facilitators of social participation, barriers included greater hearing loss, communication difficulties, comorbidities and reduced mental health. To better promote the social participation of older adults, early detection of hearing loss, holistic assessment, and interprofessional collaboration must be considered. Future research is necessary to better address the stigma related to hearing loss in older adults and challenges of early detection, and to propose innovative solutions to develop interprofessional collaboration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The elderly are disproportionately affected by age-related hearing loss (ARHL). Despite being a well-known tool for ARHL evaluation, the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening version (HHIE-S) has only traditionally been used for direct screening using self-reported outcomes. This work uses a novel integration of machine learning approaches to improve the predicted accuracy of the HHIE-S tool for ARHL in older adults. METHODS We employed a dataset that was gathered between 2016 and 2018 and included 1,526 senior citizens from several Taipei City Hospital branches. 80% of the data were used for training (n = 1220) and 20% were used for testing (n = 356). XGBoost, Gradient Boosting, and LightGBM were among the machine learning models that were only used and assessed on the training set. In order to prevent data leakage and overfitting, the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM) model-which had the greatest AUC of 0.83 (95% CI 0.81-0.85)-was then only used on the holdout testing data. RESULTS On the testing set, the LGBM model showed a strong AUC of 0.82 (95% CI 0.79-0.86), far outperforming conventional techniques. Notably, several HHIE-S items and age were found to be significant characteristics. In contrast to traditional HHIE research, which concentrates on the psychological effects of hearing loss, this study combines cutting-edge machine learning techniques-specifically, the LGBM classifier-with the HHIE-S tool. The incorporation of SHAP values enhances the interpretability of the model's predictions and provides a more comprehensive comprehension of the significance of various aspects. CONCLUSIONS Our methodology highlights the great potential that arises from combining machine learning with validated hearing evaluation instruments such as the HHIE-S. Healthcare practitioners can anticipate ARHL more accurately thanks to this integration, which makes it easier to intervene quickly and precisely.

Abstract
Hearing conditions such as hearing loss, tinnitus and hyperacusis are highly prevalent in the population and can severely impact communication and quality of life. Hearing is affected by multiple factors, including heredity, noise exposure, age, sex, ear disorders and lifestyle factors. Globally, hearing loss affects over 80% of adults aged 80 years and older, is often experienced in combination with other long-term health conditions and is a mid-life risk factor for dementia. To form a themed collection, we searched Age and Ageing for articles on hearing conditions published from 2000 onwards. This resulted in 22 articles included within the collection. They examined a range of important topics related to hearing healthcare and research, including noise-induced hearing loss, health service quality and safety, psychological and psychosocial consequences of hearing loss and co-morbidities of hearing loss. All articles reported on hearing loss; there were no published articles with a primary focus on other hearing conditions such as tinnitus or hyperacusis, on the health of older people from the Deaf community or on users of Cochlear implants, suggesting key gaps in knowledge and targets for future research. This New Horizons article highlights novel directions in research and practice and takes a forward look at how research into hearing conditions may develop in years to come. It highlights opportunities for the growth of patient-centred research and hearing healthcare supported by the better integration of health and care services as well as cross-speciality working to include common co-morbid health conditions.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the association between hearing loss and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and whether the relationship could be modified by chronic conditions in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. We selected 18,625 participants who underwent audiometry in 2013 from the Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort conducted in China, and followed them until December 2018. Hearing loss was grouped as normal, mild, and moderate or severe by pure-tone hearing threshold at speech (0.5, 1, and 2 kHz) and high frequency (4 and 8 kHz). We applied Cox regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and CVD mortality. Among the 18,625 participants, the mean age was 64.6 (range: 36.7-93.0) years, and 56.2% were women. A total of 1185 died, with 420 CVD deaths during a mean follow-up period of 5.5 years. The adjusted HR for all-cause and CVD mortality increased gradually with the increasing hearing threshold (All p for trend < 0.05). Compared to participants with normal hearing at speech frequency, the adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of moderate or severe hearing loss were 1.42 (1.21-1.67), 1.44 (1.10-1.89), and 1.92 (1.21-3.04) for all-cause, CVD, and stroke mortality, respectively. While moderate or severe hearing loss at high frequency was only related to an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.18-2.17). The associations were generally consistent across subgroups (All p for interaction > 0.05). Additionally, individuals with a combination of moderate or severe hearing loss and occupational noise exposure, diabetes, or hypertension had higher risk of all-cause or CVD mortality, ranging from 1.45 to 2.78. In conclusion, hearing loss was independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause and CVD mortality, in a dose-response manner. Meanwhile, hearing loss and diabetes or hypertension could jointly increase the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate real-life speech levels of health professionals during communication with older inpatients in small group settings. METHODS This is a prospective observational study assessing group interactions between geriatric inpatients and health professionals in a geriatric rehabilitation unit of a tertiary university hospital (Bern, Switzerland). We measured speech levels of health professionals during three typical group interactions (discharge planning meeting (n = 21), chair exercise group (n = 5), and memory training group (n = 5)) with older inpatients. Speech levels were measured using the CESVA LF010 (CESVA instruments s.l.u., Barcelona, Spain). A threshold of <60 dBA was defined as a potentially inadequate speech level. RESULTS Overall, mean talk time of recorded sessions was 23.2 (standard deviation 8.3) minutes. The mean proportion of talk time with potentially inadequate speech levels was 61.6% (sd 32.0%). The mean proportion of talk time with potentially inadequate speech levels was significantly higher in chair exercise groups (95.1% (sd 4.6%)) compared to discharge planning meetings (54.8% (sd 32.5%), p = 0.01) and memory training groups (56.3% (sd 25.4%), p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our data show that real-life speech level differs between various types of group settings and suggest potentially inadequate speech levels by healthcare professionals requiring further study.

Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) created the concept of Integrated Care for Older People and one of its constructs is intrinsic capacity (IC). The study aimed to carry out a screening with the tools designated by the WHO to assess the IC domains and whether they can be used as indicators for decision-making on integrated care for older people based on risk categorization. The interaction between the risk category and the domain scores was verified. One hundred and sixty three (163) community-dwelling older people of both genders were evaluated. Domains assessed: cognitive, psychological, vitality, locomotion, and sensory. Scores indicating a low, moderate and high risk were assigned to each domain. For all domains, there were individuals in all risk groups. Effect of risk on the domains: cognitive [χ2(2) = 134.042; p < 0.001], psychological [χ2(2) = 92.865; p < 0.001], vitality [χ2(2) = 129.564; p < 0.001], locomotion [χ2(2) = 144.101; p < 0.001], and sensory [χ2(2) = 129.037; p < 0.001]. Scores of the CI domains were affected by the risk category. There were individuals in all risk groups, demonstrating the importance of screening as a public health strategy, making it possible to know which risk category each elderly person belongs to and thus develop strategies in the short-, medium- and long-term.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The World Health Organization has introduced the term 'intrinsic capacity' (IC) as a marker of healthy ageing. However, controversy exists on the definition and assessment of IC. We aimed to review the definitions and methods used for the assessment of IC in older adults. In addition, we proposed a new IC scoring method. METHODS A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus and SPORTDiscus (up to February 10th, 2022) for studies assesing IC in older adults (>60 years). RESULTS Thirty-three studies were included. There is overall consensus on the definition of IC as well as on its different dimensions, that is: locomotion, vitality, sensory, cognition and psychological. However, the methods for assessing each of these five dimensions differ substantially across studies and there is no consensus on the best method to compute an eventual global compound score to evaluate IC taking into account all its different dimensions. CONCLUSIONS The IC represents a highly relevant clinical concept that has been unfortunately underutilized. We propose a standardization for the assessment of each dimension of IC, with a global 0 (worst) to 10 (highest) score.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Hearing loss (HL) and dual sensory loss (DSL) are prevalent, disabling, and associated with numerous age-related health conditions, including dementia and frailty. To date, no evidence-based summary of their mortality risk is available. OBJECTIVE To clarify the epidemiological associations between HL/DSL and mortality. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library, from inception until June 18, 2021. STUDY SELECTION Two blinded reviewers selected observational or interventional studies, published as full-length English articles in peer-reviewed journals, that reported the presence or severity of HL or DSL (ie, comorbid HL and vision loss), whether objectively measured or self-reported, in association with any mortality estimate, among adults 18 years and older. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Two reviewers extracted data and evaluated study bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)/Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines and a PROSPERO-registered protocol. The analysis pooled maximally adjusted estimates using mixed-effects models, measured heterogeneity using I2, investigated sources of heterogeneity using meta-regression and subgroup meta-analyses, examined and adjusted for publication bias, performed influence and cumulative meta-analyses, and assessed evidence quality using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) framework. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause, cardiovascular, or other mortality estimates. RESULTS This review included 14 retrospective and 12 prospective observational studies (1 213 756 participants) from 3220 records. Risk of bias was low to moderate; exclusion of 3 high-risk studies did not alter conclusions. Hearing loss was associated with excess all-cause mortality (HR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07-1.19; I2 = 77%; n = 21; 95% prediction interval [PI], 0.93-1.37) and cardiovascular mortality (HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.10-1.50; I2 = 60%; n = 6; 95% PI, 0.84-1.96), while DSL was associated with larger excess risks (all-cause: HR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.30-1.51; I2 = 34%; n = 10; 95% PI, 1.18-1.66; cardiovascular: HR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.31-2.65; I2 = 0%; n = 2), after adjustment for demographics and comorbidities. Prespecified meta-regression sufficiently explained heterogeneity, with longer follow-up duration weakening the pooled association, leaving low (29%) residual heterogeneity. Meta-regression among audiometric studies showed a dose-response association (doubling of HR per 30-dB increase in HL). Self-reported and audiometric effect sizes were similar, with lower heterogeneity in the latter. Associations were robust to trim-and-fill adjustment for publication bias and single-study influence and cumulative meta-analyses. Associations with accident/injury, cancer, and stroke mortality were inconclusive, with only 1 to 3 studies. Overall evidence quality was moderate. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this systematic review and meta-analysis, HL and DSL were associated with excess all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Physicians caring for patients with HL should consider its relevance to general health and longevity.

Abstract
Key Points: Question: Can the traditional Chinese version of the hearing handicap inventory for elderly screening (HHIE-S) checklist screen for age-related hearing loss (ARHL) in elderly individuals? Findings: In this cross-sectional study of 1696 Taiwanese patients who underwent annual government-funded geriatric health checkups, the Chinese version of the HHIE-S had a sensitivity of 76.9% and a specificity of 79.8% with a cutoff score greater than 6 for identifying patients with disabled hearing loss (defined as a PTA > 40 dB). Meaning: The traditional Chinese version of the HHIE-S is an effective test to detect ARHL and can improve the feasibility of large-scale hearing screening among elderly individuals. Purpose: The traditional Chinese version of the hearing handicap inventory for elderly screening (TC-HHIE-S) was translated from English and is intended for use with people whose native language is traditional Chinese, but its effectiveness and diagnostic performance are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the traditional Chinese version of the HHIE-S for screening for age-related hearing loss (ARHL). Methods: A total of 1696 elderly people underwent the government’s annual geriatric medical examination at community hospitals. In this cross-sectional study, we recorded average conducted pure-tone averages (PTA) (0.5 kHz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz), age, sex, and HHIE-S data. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to identify the best critical point for detecting hearing impairment, and the validity of the structure was verified by the agreement between the TC-HHIE-S and PTA results. Results: The HHIE-S scores were correlated with the better-ear pure-tone threshold averages (PTAs) at 0.5–4 kHz (correlation coefficient r = 0.45). The internal consistency of the total HHIE-S score was excellent (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.901), and the test-retest reliability was also excellent (Spearman’s correlation coefficient = 0.60, intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.75). In detecting disabled hearing loss (i.e., PTA at 0.5–4 kHz > 40 dB), the HHIE-S cutoff score of > 6 had a sensitivity of 76.9% and a specificity of 79.8%. Conclusions: The traditional Chinese version of the HHIE-S is a valid, reliable, and efficient tool for large-scale screening for ARHL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES So far, little is known about linkages between subjective age views and long-term changes in vision and hearing. METHOD We examined the predictive role of two key measures of subjective age views (attitude toward own aging [ATOA]; aging-related cognitions comprising continuous growth, social loss, and physical decline) for changes in self-reported problems with vision and hearing over a period of up to 9 years. A subsample of the German Ageing Survey was used, consisting of 2,499 older adults. RESULTS Controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, self-rated health, and depressive symptoms, we found that with increasing age, more favorable ATOA scores, as well as higher scores on continuous growth and lower scores on physical decline, were associated with fewer self-reported vision problems at baseline. With advancing age, more favorable ATOA scores were also related with fewer hearing problems at baseline. However, among individuals with an older baseline age, more favorable ATOA scores were associated with a steeper increase in vision problems. Higher scores on continuous growth were related with less increase in hearing problems, independent of age. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that subjective age views predict individuals' self-reported vision and hearing problems.

Abstract
Mobility is essential to maintaining independence for older adults. This systematic review aimed to summarize evidence about self-reported risk factors for self-reported mobility decline; and to provide an overview of published prognostic models for self-reported mobility decline among community-dwelling older adults. Databases were searched from inception to June 2, 2020. Studies were screened by two independent reviewers who extracted data and assessed study quality. Sixty-one studies (45,187 participants) were included, providing information on 107 risk factors. High-quality evidence and moderate/large effect sizes for the association with mobility decline were found for older age beyond 75 years, the presence of widespread pain, and mobility modifications. Moderate-high quality evidence and small effect sizes were found for a further 21 factors. Three model development studies demonstrated acceptable model performance, limited by high risk of bias. These findings should be considered in intervention development, and in developing a prediction instrument for practical application.

Abstract
Purpose Hearing and vision loss are common in later life but often overlooked and undertreated. The study aims to examine hearing and vision as part of preventive home visits (PHV) among 76-year-old home-dwelling citizens in Tórshavn, the capital of Faroe Islands. Patients and Methods In this cross-sectional study, three specially trained nurses conducted the examinations and tests, for this purpose, in the community health-centre. Results A total of 74 individuals participated (56% participation rate) of whom 77% had some degree of hearing impairment, 89% had visual impairment and 22% had dual sensory loss. A significant correlation between self-reported hearing ability and clinical findings was found, whereas self-reported vision did not correlate significantly with test-results. Conclusion Results indicate that implementing clinical assessments of hearing and vision as part of preventive home visits would benefit people receiving visits, and society by helping maintain the conditions that allow them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible.

Abstract
Although stress is a risk factor for various diseases in later life, its role for sensory abilities in the second half of life has rarely been empirically addressed. We examined if perceived stress at baseline predicts self-reported difficulties with vision and hearing 3 years later. We also explored whether chronological age is a moderator of associations between stress and sensory difficulties. Our sample was derived from the German Ageing Survey and consisted of n = 5,085 individuals aged 40-95 years (M = 64.01 years, SD = 10.84 years). Controlling for baseline self-reported sensory functioning, socio-demographic indicators, self-rated health and chronic diseases, greater perceived stress at baseline predicted greater self-reported difficulties with vision and hearing 3 years later. The effect of stress did not vary by age. Our findings suggest that, from middle adulthood to advanced old age, stress is a risk factor for increases in self-perceived problems with vision and hearing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Age is the most common predictor of hearing loss; however, many older adults are not screened. Hearing screening could improve healthcare access, participation, and outcomes. Establishing whether hearing screening in older adults is cost-effective could improve the availability and utilization of screening. METHODS We searched nine databases in January 2020. Studies with populations aged 50+ and provided data on the cost-effectiveness of hearing screening were included in the review. RESULTS Five studies met the inclusion criteria and all found hearing screening programs to be cost-effective compared to no hearing screening, regardless of screening method (i.e., instrument or strategy). The maximum number of repeated screenings, coupled with younger ages, was most cost-effective. DISCUSSION This review suggests that hearing screening in older adults is cost-effective, however, the evidence is limited. There is pressing need for research focused on economic impacts of hearing healthcare in older adults to inform research, policy and practice.

Abstract
Importance Sensory acuity tends to decrease with age, but little is known about the relationship between having multiple sensory impairments and well-being in later life. Objective To examine associations between concurrent multisensory impairments and aspects of well-being and mental health, namely quality of life and depressive symptoms. Design, Setting, and Participants Cross-sectional analysis of participants in the English Longitudinal Study of Aging wave 8 (May 2016 to June 2017). This is a representative sample of free-living English individuals 52 years and older. Analysis began April 2018. Main Outcomes and Measures Linear and logistic regression models were used to assess the association of self-reported concurrent impairments in hearing, vision, smell, and taste with quality of life (0-57 on the 19-item CASP-19 scale; Control, Autonomy, Self-realization and Pleasure) and depressive symptoms (≥4 items on the 8-item Centre for Epidemiologic Study Depression Scale). Results Using a representative sample of 6147 individuals, 52% (weighted) were women (n = 3455; unweighted, 56%) and the mean (95% CI) age was 66.6 (66.2-67.0) years. Multiple sensory impairments were associated with poorer quality of life and greater odds of depressive symptoms after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, chronic conditions, and cognitive function. Compared with no sensory impairment, quality of life decreased linearly as the number of senses impaired increased, with individuals reporting 3 to 4 sensory impairments displaying the poorest quality of life (-4.68; 95% CI, -6.13 to -3.23 points on the CASP-19 scale). Similarly, odds of depressive symptoms increased linearly as the number of impairments increased. Individuals with 3 to 4 senses impaired had more than a 3-fold risk of depressive symptoms (odds ratio, 3.36; 95% CI, 2.28-4.96). Conclusions and Relevance In this cross-sectional study, concurrent sensory impairments were associated with poorer quality of life and increased risks of depressive symptoms. Therefore, assessing and managing sensory impairments could help improve older adults' well-being.

Abstract
Objective Well-being is influenced by the activities we undertake. Hearing loss may reduce well-being directly through increased listening-related fatigue due to cognitive and emotional strain in challenging situations. Hearing loss and hearing device use may also indirectly impact fatigue and well-being by altering the frequency and type of daily-life activities. This review examines the available literature to help understand the relationships. Design We provide (i) a summary of the extant literature regarding hearing loss, hearing device use and fatigue in adults, as well as regarding fatigue and daily-life activity (work, social and physical) and (ii) a systematic search and narrative review of the relationships between hearing loss, hearing device use and activity. Study sample The systematic search resulted in 66 eligible texts. Results Data examining well-being in persons with hearing loss are limited. Our literature review suggests that well-being can be related directly and indirectly to hearing loss, hearing device use, activity level and listening-related fatigue. Conclusions Variations and interactions between hearing loss, hearing device use, fatigue and activity levels can be expected to impact well-being in persons with hearing loss in direct and indirect ways. Future research linking hearing and daily-life fatigue should take account of activity levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of the present study was to estimate the risk of mortality in hearing loss subjects in accordance with the cause of death. STUDY DESIGN A longitudinal follow up study. SETTING Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort were collected from a period between 2002 and 2013. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTION The 4,606 severe and 1,007 profound hearing loss participants with 40 or more years old were 1:4 matched with control participants, respectively, for age, sex, income, and region of residence. The causes of death were grouped into 12 classifications. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The ratio of mortality was compared between the hearing loss and control group using a χ test or Fisher's exact test. In a Cox-proportional hazard model, age, sex, income, region of residence, and past medical histories were considered confounders. RESULTS The severe and profound hearing loss groups showed 4.07 (95% CI = 3.71-4.46, p < 0.001) and 4.22 times (95% CI = 3.52-5.05, p < 0.001) higher mortality ratios in the adjusted models, respectively. Both the severe and profound hearing loss groups showed higher mortality by infection, neoplasm, trauma, and metabolic, mental, circulatory, respiratory, and digestive diseases than control groups (p < 0.05). Among various causes of death, death by trauma revealed the highest odds ratios in both the severe and profound hearing loss groups. CONCLUSION Hearing loss was associated with a significant increase in mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disability in general has been associated with poor outcomes in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. However, disability can be derived from various components, specifically visual, hearing, physical and walking impairments. Different impairments may compromise the patient through different mechanisms and might impact different aspects of KT outcomes. METHODS In our prospective cohort study (June 2013-June 2017), 465 recipients reported hearing, visual, physical and walking impairments before KT. We used hybrid registry-augmented Cox regression, adjusting for confounders using the US KT population (Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, N = 66 891), to assess the independent association between impairments and post-KT outcomes [death-censored graft failure (DCGF) and mortality]. RESULTS In our cohort of 465 recipients, 31.6% reported one or more impairments (hearing 9.3%, visual 16.6%, physical 9.1%, walking 12.1%). Visual impairment was associated with a 3.36-fold [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.17-9.65] higher DCGF risk, however, hearing [2.77 (95% CI 0.78-9.82)], physical [0.67 (95% CI 0.08-3.35)] and walking [0.50 (95% CI 0.06-3.89)] impairments were not. Walking impairment was associated with a 3.13-fold (95% CI 1.32-7.48) higher mortality risk, however, visual [1.20 (95% CI 0.48-2.98)], hearing [1.01 (95% CI 0.29-3.47)] and physical [1.16 (95% CI 0.34-3.94)] impairments were not. CONCLUSIONS Impairments are common among KT recipients, yet only visual impairment and walking impairment are associated with adverse post-KT outcomes. Referring nephrologists and KT centers should identify recipients with visual and walking impairments who might benefit from targeted interventions pre-KT, additional supportive care and close post-KT monitoring.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence implicates excess weight as a potential risk factor for hearing loss. However, this association remained inconclusive. Therefore, we aimed to systematically and quantitatively review the published observational study on the association between body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference (WC) and hearing loss. METHODS The odds ratios (ORs) or relative risks (RRs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled under a random-effects model. Fourteen observational studies were eligible for the inclusion in the final analysis. RESULTS In the meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies, the ORs for prevalent hearing loss were 1.10 (95% CI 0.88, 1.38) underweight, 1.14 (95% CI 0.99, 1.32) for overweight, OR 1.40 (95% CI 1.14, 1.72) for obesity, 1.14 (95% CI 1.04, 1.24) for each 5 kg/m2 increase in BMI, and 1.22 (95% CO 0.88. 1.68) for higher WC. In the meta-analysis of longitudinal studies, the RRs were 0.96 (95% CI 0.52, 1.79) for underweight, 1.15 (95% CI 1.04, 1.27) for overweight, 1.38 (95% CI 1.07, 1.79) for obesity, 1.15 (95% CI 1.01, 1.30) for each 5 kg/m2 increase in BMI, and 1.11 (95% CI 1.01, 1.22) for higher WC. CONCLUSIONS In summary, our findings add weight to the evidence that elevated BMI and higher WC may be positively associated with the risk of hearing loss.

Abstract
Objective: This study extends prior findings by looking at the relationship between hearing acuity and cognitive difficulties in 51 nations. Methods: We draw on data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata International Series available at the Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation at the University of Minnesota. For all countries where data are available, bivariate relationships between hearing and cognitive problems are examined using correlation coefficients (Rs) and multivariate relationships using linear regression techniques (betas), controlling for age, gender, marital status, and education. Results: For all 51 countries, the R between hearing problems and cognitive problems is 0.334 (p < .001); the multivariate beta is 0.316 (p < .001). Regional results are also statistically significant. Discussion: The relationship between hearing and memory appears to be universal, and practitioners must carefully assess and treat their client's hearing disabilities before they can expect them to remember any information.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing impairment is common at an older age and has considerable social, health and economic implications. With an increase in the ageing population, there is a need to identify modifiable risk factors for hearing impairment. A shared aetiology with cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been advanced as CVD risk factors (e.g. obesity, type 2 diabetes) are associated with a greater risk of hearing impairment. Moreover, low-grade inflammation is implicated in the aetiology of CVD. Accordingly, our aim was to investigate the association between several markers of inflammation - C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and white blood cell count - and hearing impairment. METHODS Participants of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing aged 50-93 were included. Inflammatory marker data from both wave 4 (baseline, 2008/09) and wave 6 (2012/13) were averaged to measure systemic inflammation. Hearing acuity was measured with a simple handheld tone-producing device at follow-up (2014/15). RESULTS Among 4879 participants with a median age of 63 years at baseline, 1878 (38.4%) people presented hearing impairment at follow-up. All three biomarkers were positively and linearly associated with hearing impairment independent of age and sex. After further adjustment for covariates, including cardiovascular risk factors (smoking, physical activity, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol), memory and depression, only the association with white blood cell count remained significant: odds ratio per log-unit increase; 95% confidence interval = 1.46; 1.11, 1.93. CONCLUSIONS While white blood cell count was positively associated with hearing impairment in older adults, no relationships were found for two other markers of low-grade inflammation.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the influence of single and dual sensory impairments prospectively on cognition in adults aged ⩾50 years. Method: Community-dwelling English adults (n = 4,621) were followed up from 2008 to 2014. Self-reported hearing and vision were collected in 2008. Change in cognitive performance on working memory and executive function between 2008 and 2014 was evaluated. Results: Compared with good hearing and good vision, respectively, poor hearing and poor vision were associated with worse cognitive function (hearing: unstandardized coefficient B = 0.83, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = [0.29, 1.37]; vision: B = 1.61, 95% CI = [0.92, 2.29] adjusted for age, sex, baseline cognition). Compared with no sensory impairment, dual sensory impairment was associated with worse cognition (B = 2.30, 95% CI = [1.21, 3.39] adjusted for age, sex, baseline cognition). All associations remained after further adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, chronic conditions, falls, mobility, depression, and lack of companionship. Discussion: The findings are important as age-related sensory impairments are often preventable or modifiable, which may prevent or delay cognitive impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We used longitudinal cohort data to investigate whether hearing problems and low levels of social activity lead to a higher incidence of disability among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS Participants were 4576 older adults (47.8% male, mean age 75.9 years) who met the study inclusion criteria. Longitudinal data on the incidence of disability were monitored monthly. Disability was defined as Japanese long-term care insurance certification for personal support or care for 2 years following the baseline assessment. Hearing problems were measured using the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly and for Adults - Screening version. Participants completed a questionnaire that included five questions on daily social activities. RESULTS In the adjusted model that included potential covariates, participants with co-occurring hearing problems and low participation rates in social activities were at higher risk of developing a disability than participants without hearing problems and low levels of social activity (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.13, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.31-3.45). The second highest risk of developing a disability was found for those with low levels of social activity alone (HR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.26-3.11), and the third highest for those with hearing problems alone (HR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.07-1.77). CONCLUSIONS Hearing problems and a lack of social activity were independent risk factors for developing a disability. Co-occurring hearing problems and low levels of participation in social activities represented the largest risk factor for disability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined the role of social frailty in the association between hearing problems and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and investigated which cognitive impairment domains are most strongly involved. METHODS Participants were 4251 older adults (mean age 72.5 ± 5.2 years, 46.1% male) who met the study inclusion criteria. Hearing problems were measured using the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly. Social frailty was identified using responses to five questions. Participants were divided into four groups depending on the presence of social frailty and hearing problems: control, social frailty, hearing problem, and co-occurrence. We assessed memory, attention, executive function, and processing speed using the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology-Functional Assessment Tool. Participants were categorized into normal cognition, single- and multiple-domain MCI, depending on the number of impaired cognitive domains. RESULTS Participants with multiple-domain MCI exhibited the highest odds ratios (OR) of the co-occurrence group (OR: 3.89, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.96-7.72), followed by the social frailty (OR: 2.65, 95% CI: 1.49-4.67), and hearing problem (OR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.08-3.34) groups, compared with the control group. However, single-domain MCI was not significantly associated with any group. Cognitive domain analysis revealed that impaired executive function and processing speed were associated with the co-occurrence, hearing problem, and social frailty groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Social frailty and hearing problems were independently associated with multiple-domain MCI. Comorbid conditions were more strongly associated with multiple-domain MCI. Longitudinal studies are needed to elucidate the causal role of social frailty in the association between hearing impairment and MCI.

Abstract
Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) is associated with cardiovascular disease, itself a risk factor for hearing impairment, and, in animal studies, molecular evidence suggests a role for IGF-1 in hearing function. However, the link between IGF-1 and the occurrence of hearing impairment is untested in population-based studies of humans. A total of 4390 participants aged ≥50 y (mean [SD] age 64.2 [8.0] years at baseline, 55% women) from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing provided serum levels of IGF-1 in 2008 and again in 2012. Hearing acuity was assessed by an objective hearing test (HearCheck handheld device) in 2014 when the prevalence was 38.2%. In the full cohort, IGF-1 was not associated with subsequent hearing impairment (OR5nmol/L increase; 95% CI: 1.01; 0.94, 1.09). However, this relationship appeared to differ by age (p-value for interaction = 0.03). Thus, in younger participants (aged 50–60 y, n = 1400), IGF-1 was associated with lower odds of hearing impairment (0.86; 0.73, 1.00) after adjustment for a range of potential confounders. Among people ≥60 y (n = 2990) there was a non-significant ‘J’-shaped association. Our observational evidence that higher levels of IGF-1 appeared to confer some protection against hearing impairment in some older adults warrants replication in other prospective cohort studies.
