Toward resilient agriculture and environmental protection: The role of cell wall-bound phenolics

Due to their unpredicted scope, duration, and effects, soil droughts pose a serious threat to agriculture. Gradual steppe formation and desertification of farming and horticultural lands are the consequences of climate change. Irrigation systems for field crops do not offer the most viable solution, as they depend heavily on freshwater resources, which are currently scarce. For these reasons, it is necessary to obtain crop cultivars that are not only more tolerant to soil drought, but also capable of effective use of water during and after drought. In this article, we highlight the importance of cell wall-bound phenolics in the efficient adaptation of crops to arid environments and protection of soil water resources.

The Genome Regions Associated with Abiotic and Biotic Stress Tolerance, as Well as Other Important Breeding Traits in Triticale

This review article presents the greatest challenges in modern triticale breeding. Genetic maps that were developed and described thus far, together with the quantitative trait loci and candidate genes linked to important traits are also described. The most important part of this review is dedicated to a winter triticale mapping population based on doubled haploid lines obtained from a cross of the cultivars 'Hewo' and 'Magnat'. Many research studies on this population have focused on the analysis of quantitative trait loci regions associated with abiotic (drought and freezing) and biotic (pink snow mold and powdery mildew) stress tolerance as well as related to other important breeding traits such as stem length, plant height, spike length, number of the productive spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, and thousand kernel weight. In addition, candidate genes located among these regions are described in detail. A comparison analysis of all of these results revealed the location of common quantitative trait loci regions on the rye chromosomes 4R, 5R, and 6R, with a particular emphasis on chromosome 5R. Described here are the candidate genes identified in the above genome regions that may potentially play an important role in the analysis of trait expression. Nevertheless, these results should guide further research using molecular methods of gene identification and it is worth extending the research to other mapping populations. The article is also a review of research led by other authors on the triticale tolerance to the most current stress factors appearing in the breeding.

Cell dehydration of intergeneric hybrid induces subgenome-related specific responses

The aim was to identify subgenome-related specific responses in two types of triticale, that is, of the wheat-dominated genome (WDG) and rye-dominated genome (RDG), to water stress induced in the early phase (tillering) of plant growth. Higher activity of the primary metabolism of carbohydrates is a feature of the WDG type, while the dominance of the rye genome is associated with a higher activity of the secondary metabolism of phenolic compounds in the RDG type. The study analyzed carbohydrates and key enzymes of their synthesis, free phenolic compounds and carbohydrate-related components of the cell wall, monolignols, and shikimic acid (ShA), which is a key link between the primary and secondary metabolism of phenolic compounds. Under water stress, dominance of the wheat genome in the WDG type was manifested by an increased accumulation of the large subunit of Rubisco and sucrose phosphate synthase and a higher content of raffinose and stachyose compared with the RDG type. In dehydrated RDG plants, higher activity of L-phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and L-tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL), as well as a higher level of ShA, free and cell wall-bound p-hydroxybenzoic acid, free homovanillic acid, free sinapic acid, and cell wall-bound syringic acid can be considered biochemical indicators of the dominance of the rye genome.

Plants and water: the search for a comprehensive understanding

We learn early in life sciences classes that water is the solution of life, working in tandem with carbon to make life as we know it possible. Globally, the abundance of water can be misleading, as most of this water is unavailable, being overly salinized in the oceans or locked in deep underground reserves. On land, the critical supply is of freshwater, which is unevenly distributed in space and time. Even the wettest environments can experience episodic water deficit, and flash flooding periodically occurs in arid landscapes. While humanity can capture, store and transport freshwater over large distances to ensure sustained supply, such options are not apparent for plants except in an immediate local context. Plants must make do with the water in their immediate surroundings, whether it be abundant or scarce. How they do this has led to a myriad of adaptive solutions, involving capturing, storing and transporting water. The traits that enable them to optimize water use in a range of hydraulic environments, subject to multivariate selective constraints, are the essence of the discipline of plant-water relations.
