Effects of ambient oxygen and size-selective mortality on growth and maturation in guppies

Juvenile-to-adult transition invariances in fishes: Perspectives on proximate and ultimate causation

To bridge physiological and evolutionary perspectives on size at maturity in fishes, the authors focus on the approximately invariant ratio between the estimated oxygen supply at size at maturity (Q_m ) relative to that at asymptotic size (Q_∞ ) among species within a taxonomic group, and show how two important theories related to this phenomenon complement each other. Gill-oxygen limitation theory proposes a mechanistic basis for a universal oxygen supply-based threshold for maturation, which applies among and within species. On the contrary, the authors show that a generalisation of life-history theory for the invariance of size at maturity (L_m ) relative to asymptotic size (L_∞ ) can provide an evolutionary rationale for an oxygen-limited maturation threshold (Q_m /Q_∞ ). Extending previous inter- and intraspecific analyses, the authors show that maturation invariances also occur in lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis (Mitchill 1818), but at both scales, theory seems to underestimate the value of the maturation threshold. They highlight some key uncertainties in the model that should be addressed to help resolve the mismatch.

Size-selective harvesting affects the immunocompetence of guppies exposed to the parasite Gyrodactylus

Harvesting is typically size-selective, targeting large individuals. This is expected to lead to reduced average body size and earlier maturation (i.e. faster life histories). Such changes can also affect traits seemingly unrelated to harvesting, including immunocompetence. Here we test four hypotheses on how harvesting affects immunocompetence based on the pace-of-life syndrome, habitat area limitation and energy allocation and acquisition, respectively. We empirically evaluate these hypotheses using an experimental system consisting of the ectoparasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli and lines of guppies Poecilia reticulata that had been subjected to either small, random or large size-selective harvest for over 12 years. We followed the infection progression of individually infected fish for 15 days. We found significant differences between the harvested lines: fish from the small-harvested lines had the highest parasite loads. During the early phase of the infection, parasite loads were the lowest in the large-harvested lines, whereas the terminal loads were the lowest for the random-harvested lines. These results agree with the predictions from the energetic trade-off and surface area hypotheses. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the consequences of size-selective harvesting on immunocompetence.

Metabolomic Profiling Analysis of Physiological Responses to Acute Hypoxia and Reoxygenation in Juvenile Qingtian Paddy Field Carp Cyprinus Carpio Var Qingtianensis

The Qingtian paddy field carp (Cyprinus carpio var qingtianensis) is a local carp cultivated in the rice field of Qingtian county, Zhejiang province, China. The paddy field environment is distinct from the pond environment. Due to the inability to artificially increase oxygen, the dissolved oxygen greatly changes during the day. Therefore, investigating the physiological regulation to the changes of acute dissolved oxygen in Qingtian paddy field carp (PF-carp) will dramatically clarify how it adapts to the paddy breeding environment. The high tolerance of Qingtian paddy field carp to hypoxia makes it an ideal organism for studying molecular regulatory mechanisms during hypoxia process and reoxygenation following hypoxia in fish. In this study, we compared the changes of metabolites in the hepatopancreas during hypoxia stress and the following reoxygenation through comparative metabolomics. The results showed 131 differentially expressed metabolites between the hypoxic groups and control groups. Among them, 95 were up-regulated, and 36 were down-regulated. KEGG Pathway enrichment analysis showed that these differential metabolites were mainly involved in regulating lipid, protein, and purine metabolism PF-carps could require energy during hypoxia by enhancing the gluconeogenesis pathway with core glutamic acid and glutamine metabolism. A total of 63 differentially expressed metabolites were screened by a comparison between the reoxygenated groups and the hypoxic groups. Specifically, 15 were up-regulated, and 48 were down-regulated. The KEGG Pathway enrichment analysis supported that PF-carp could continue to gain energy by consuming glutamic acid and the glutamine accumulated during hypoxia and simultaneously weaken the ammonia-transferring effect of amino acids and the toxicity of ammonia. By consuming glycerophospholipids and maintaining the Prostaglandin E content, cell damage was improved, sphingosinol synthesis was reduced, and apoptosis was inhibited. Additionally, it could enhance the salvage synthesis and de novo synthesis of purine, reduce purine accumulation, promote the synthesis of nucleotide and energy carriers, and assist in recovering physiological metabolism. Overall, results explained the physiological regulation mechanism of PF-carp adapting to the acute changes of dissolved oxygen at the metabolic level and also provided novel evidence for physiological regulation of other fish in an environment with acute changes in dissolved oxygen levels.

Density-dependent natural selection mediates harvest-induced trait changes

Rapid life-history changes caused by size-selective harvesting are often interpreted as a response to direct harvest selection against a large body size. However, similar trait changes may result from a harvest-induced relaxation of natural selection for a large body size via density-dependent selection. Here, we show evidence of such density-dependent selection favouring large-bodied individuals at high population densities, in replicated pond populations of medaka fish. Harvesting, in contrast, selected medaka directly against a large body size and, in parallel, decreased medaka population densities. Five years of harvesting were enough for harvested and unharvested medaka populations to inherit the classically predicted trait differences, whereby harvested medaka grew slower and matured earlier than unharvested medaka. We show that this life-history divergence was not driven by direct harvest selection for a smaller body size in harvested populations, but by density-dependent natural selection for a larger body size in unharvested populations.

Unidirectional response to bidirectional selection on body size. I. Phenotypic, life-history, and endocrine responses

Anthropogenic perturbations such as harvesting often select against a large body size and are predicted to induce rapid evolution toward smaller body sizes and earlier maturation. However, body‐size evolvability and, hence, adaptability to anthropogenic perturbations remain seldom evaluated in wild populations. Here, we use a laboratory experiment over 6 generations to measure the ability of wild‐caught medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) to evolve in response to bidirectional size‐dependent selection mimicking opposite harvest regimes. Specifically, we imposed selection against a small body size (Large line), against a large body size (Small line) or random selection (Control line), and measured correlated responses across multiple phenotypic, life‐history, and endocrine traits. As expected, the Large line evolved faster somatic growth and delayed maturation, but also evolved smaller body sizes at hatch, with no change in average levels of pituitary gene expressions of luteinizing, follicle‐stimulating, or growth hormones (GH). In contrast, the Small medaka line was unable to evolve smaller body sizes or earlier maturation, but evolved smaller body sizes at hatch and showed marginally significant signs of increased reproductive investment, including larger egg sizes and elevated pituitary GH production. Natural selection on medaka body size was too weak to significantly hinder the effect of artificial selection, indicating that the asymmetric body‐size response to size‐dependent selection reflected an asymmetry in body‐size evolvability. Our results show that trait evolvability may be contingent upon the direction of selection and that a detailed knowledge of trait evolutionary potential is needed to forecast population response to anthropogenic change.

Hypoxia alters vulnerability to capture and the potential for trait-based selection in a scaled-down trawl fishery

Lay summary Selective harvest of wild organisms by humans can influence the evolution of plants and animals, and fishing is recognized as a particularly strong driver of this process. Importantly, these effects occur alongside environmental change. Here we show that aquatic hypoxia can alter which individuals within a fish population are vulnerable to capture by trawling, potentially altering the selection and evolutionary effects stemming from commercial fisheries.

Selection for small body size favours contrasting sex-specific life histories, boldness and feeding in medaka, Oryzias latipes

BACKGROUND

Studying variation in life-history traits and correlated behaviours, such as boldness and foraging (i.e., pace-of-life syndrome), allows us to better understand how these traits evolve in a changing environment. In fish, it is particularly relevant studying the interplay of resource abundance and size-selection. These are two environmental stressors affecting fish in natural conditions, but also associated with human-induced environmental change. For instance, fishing, one of the most important threats for freshwater and marine populations, results in both higher mortality on large-sized fish and reduced population density.

RESULTS

Medaka, Oryzias latipes, from lines selected for large or small size over ten generations, were exposed individually to high or low food availability from birth to adulthood. Maturation schedules, reproductive investment, growth, boldness and feeding were assessed to evaluate the effect of size-selection on the pace of life, and whether it differed between food contexts (high and low). Different food abundance and size-selection resulted in diverse life histories associated with different feeding and boldness behaviour, thus showing different pace-of-life-syndromes. High availability of food favoured faster growth, earlier maturation and increased shyness. Selection for small size led to slower growth in both males and females. But, the life-history trajectory to reach such growth was sex- and food-specific. Under low food conditions, females selected for small size showed earlier maturation, which led to slower adult growth and subsequent low willingness to feed, compared to females selected for large size. No line differences were found in females at high food conditions. In contrast, males exposed to selection for small size grew slower both as juvenile and adult, and were bolder under both feeding regimes. Therefore, the response to size-selection was more sensitive to food availability in females than in males.

CONCLUSIONS

We showed that size-selection (over ten generations) and resource abundance (over developmental time) led to changes in life history and behaviour. However, the effect of size-selection was sex- and context-specific, calling for precaution when drawing general conclusions on the population-level effects (or lack of them) of size-selective fishing. Conservation and management plans should consider this sex- and context-specificity.

Size-selective harvesting fosters adaptations in mating behaviour and reproductive allocation, affecting sexual selection in fish

The role of sexual selection in the context of harvest-induced evolution is poorly understood. However, elevated and trait-selective harvesting of wild populations may change sexually selected traits, which in turn can affect mate choice and reproduction. We experimentally evaluated the potential for fisheries-induced evolution of mating behaviour and reproductive allocation in fish. We used an experimental system of zebrafish (Danio rerio) lines exposed to large, small or random (i.e. control) size-selective mortality. The large-harvested line represented a treatment simulating the typical case in fisheries where the largest individuals are preferentially harvested. We used a full factorial design of spawning trials with size-matched individuals to control for the systematic impact of body size during reproduction, thereby singling out possible changes in mating behaviour and reproductive allocation. Both small size-selective mortality and large size-selective mortality left a legacy on male mating behaviour by elevating intersexual aggression. However, there was no evidence for line-assortative reproductive allocation. Females of all lines preferentially allocated eggs to the generally less aggressive males of the random-harvested control line. Females of the large-harvested line showed enhanced reproductive performance, and males of the large-harvested line had the highest egg fertilization rate among all males. These findings can be explained as an evolutionary adaptation by which individuals of the large-harvested line display an enhanced reproductive performance early in life to offset the increased probability of adult mortality due to harvest. Our results suggest that the large-harvested line evolved behaviourally mediated reproductive adaptations that could increase the rate of recovery when populations adapted to high fishing pressure come into secondary contact with other populations.

Host choice and fitness of anemonefish Amphiprion ocellaris (Perciformes: Pomacentridae) living with host anemones (Anthozoa: Actiniaria) in captive conditions

In this study, we investigated the host choice of naïve Amphiprion ocellaris, a specialist, at two different stages of development (newly settling juveniles and post-settlement juveniles). The fish were exposed to their natural and unnatural host species in the laboratory and their fitness was assessed in terms of activity and growth rate. Newly settling juveniles exhibited little host preference, while post-settlement juveniles immediately associated with their most common host in the wild. The analysis of fish activity confirmed that A. ocellaris is diurnal; they are most active in the morning, less at midday and barely move at night. The average travelling distance of juveniles was shorter in the groups living with their natural host, increasing in the groups living with an unnatural host and was highest in groups that did not become associated with any other unnatural host species. Post-settlement juveniles living with the natural host species grew better than those living with unnatural hosts or without anemone contact. These results suggest that the welfare of A. ocellaris in captivity will be optimized by keeping them with their natural anemone host species, although more generalist Amphiprion species may survive in association with other hosts.

Sound physiological knowledge and principles in modeling shrinking of fishes under climate change

One of the main expected responses of marine fishes to ocean warming is decrease in body size, as supported by evidence from empirical data and theoretical modeling. The theoretical underpinning for fish shrinking is that the oxygen supply to large fish size cannot be met by their gills, whose surface area cannot keep up with the oxygen demand by their three-dimensional bodies. However, Lefevre et al. (Global Change Biology, 2017, 23, 3449-3459) argue against such theory. Here, we re-assert, with the Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT), that gills, which must retain the properties of open surfaces because their growth, even while hyperallometric, cannot keep up with the demand of growing three-dimensional bodies. Also, we show that a wide range of biological features of fish and other water-breathing organisms can be understood when gill area limitation is used as an explanation. We also note that an alternative to GOLT, offering a more parsimonious explanation for these features of water-breathers has not been proposed. Available empirical evidence corroborates predictions of decrease in body sizes under ocean warming based on GOLT, with the magnitude of the predicted change increases when using more species-specific parameter values of metabolic scaling.
