A Review of the Ecology and Management of Black Turpentine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Acoustic Communication in Dendroctonus adjunctus Blandford (Curculionidae Scolytinae): Description of Calls and Sound Production Mechanism

The acoustic communication system (ACS) in bark beetles has been studied mainly in species of the genera Dendroctonus, Ips and Polygraphus. Specifically, ACS of the roundheaded pine beetle, Dendroctonus adjunctus, has been little studied. In this study, we described the stridulatory apparatus of this beetle using optical and scanning electron microscopy and recorded the call types produced by males in three behavioral contexts: stress, female-male-, and male-male interactions. From the spectrograms and waveforms, call types, as well as temporal (tooth strike, tooth strike rate, and intertooth strike interval) and spectral features (minimum, maximum and dominant frequency), were determined. Males have a functional elytro-tergal stridulatory apparatus-females do not-consisting of a file for the pars stridens and two lobes for the plectrum. Most of spectro-temporal features were statistically different between single- and multi-noted calls and across the three behavioral contexts. In the male-male interaction, a new type of call named "withdrawal" was produced by the male withdrawing or fleeing. Our results suggest that the spectro-temporal features of single- and multiple-noted calls in the three behavioral conditions are specific and different from each other. Yet, the combination of single and multiple calls determines an overall calling pattern characteristic of the tested behaviors and, therefore, is species-specific.

Field Response of Black Turpentine Beetle to Pine Resin Oxidation and Pheromone Displacement

The black turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus terebrans, is an economically important pest of pines in the Southeastern U.S., with a high potential for invasion to other pine-rich regions. Dendroctonus terebrans attraction to an injured host tree lessens over time as the host material degrades. Likewise, kairomonal volatiles emitted from the host change as constituents of the defensive resin oxidize. Therefore we hypothesized that volatiles associated with a fresh host would be more attractive to D. terebrans than those associated with a dead or dying host. We replicated the natural oxidation process of turpentine, fractionated the distilled products to isolate the oxidized products, and deployed the complex mixtures to measure field attraction based on the amount of oxidation performed. Contrasting with previous studies, our results suggest that D. terebrans attraction is not primarily based on host tree degradation. In a second experiment incorporating Dendroctonus pheromones, we demonstrate D. terebrans has a displacement-dependent response to endo-brevicomin, a pheromone associated with the sympatric southern pine beetle, D. frontalis. This has implications not only for possible interspecific signaling, but also for the role of endo-brevicomin in D. terebrans colonization behavior. The results from this study broaden the understanding of D. terebrans chemical ecology and directly contribute to the development of an effective lure-based monitoring system that will benefit future research and management efforts. This may become important if the species is established outside its native range, as in the closely related red turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus valens, which caused mass pine tree mortality following its introduction to Asia.

Arthropods and Fire Within the Biologically Diverse Longleaf Pine Ecosystem

The longleaf pine Pinus palustris Miller (Pinales: Pinaceae) ecosystem once covered as many as 37 million hectares across the southeastern United States. Through fire suppression, development, and conversion to other plantation pines, this coverage has dwindled to fewer than 2 million hectares. A recent focus on the restoration of this ecosystem has revealed its complex and biologically diverse nature. Arthropods of the longleaf pine ecosystem are incredibly numerous and diverse-functionally and taxonomically. To provide clarity on what is known about the species and their functional roles in longleaf pine forests, we thoroughly searched the literature and found nearly 500 references. In the end, we tabulated 51 orders 477 families, 1,949 genera, and 3,032 arthropod species as having been stated in the scientific literature to occur in longleaf pine ecosystems. The body of research we drew from is rich and varied but far from comprehensive. Most work deals with land management objective associated taxa such as pests of pine, pests of-and food for-wildlife (red-cockaded woodpecker, northern bobwhite quail, gopher tortoise, pocket gopher, etc.), and pollinators of the diverse plant understory associated with longleaf pine. We explored the complex role frequent fire (critical in longleaf pine management) plays in determining the arthropod community in longleaf pine, including its importance to rare and threatened species. We examined known patterns of abundance and occurrence of key functional groups of longleaf pine-associated arthropods. Finally, we identified some critical gaps in knowledge and provide suggestions for future research into this incredibly diverse ecosystem.
